Latest / Clydesdale Media Podcast / Chopping it Up with Coach Krispy Kreme and Clydesdale Media - Quarters are Over, Thoughts?
Transcript
- 0:11We wanted to start this.
- 0:40is one I've gotten to know
- 0:41Tristan pretty well over the last year.
- 0:44One of my best friends in
- 0:45the world is Jamie Latimer.
- 0:48Tristan is her coach.
- 0:51And I even got to know you a
- 0:53little bit before that
- 0:54happened with Kelly Baker
- 0:56and following her through last season.
- 0:58That's probably what made
- 1:00you most famous as a coach
- 1:02is taking Kelly Baker to
- 1:03the games for the first
- 1:04time as an individual athlete.
- 1:06Yeah.
- 1:07And then the chaos that
- 1:08ensued at the games.
- 1:10Yeah.
- 1:11It was a good follow-up to
- 1:12the chaos that ensued at
- 1:14semifinals in the last event.
- 1:16So it was on brand.
- 1:18Yeah.
- 1:19So what I wanted to do is
- 1:20kind of periodically check in with you,
- 1:23get a coach's perspective
- 1:24on what's going on in space,
- 1:26and we'll create new
- 1:26backgrounds and bumpers and
- 1:28all that for that.
- 1:29But it's been a crazy day.
- 1:32So we were going to start with
- 1:34You were in the chat with
- 1:36Jamie and I a couple weeks
- 1:38ago and said quarterfinal
- 1:39programming is the most
- 1:41important programming that
- 1:43CrossFit will ever do.
- 1:45We're scrapping that for now.
- 1:46We're going to touch on it a
- 1:47little bit later in the show.
- 1:48But since we talked,
- 1:51there's been some scoring
- 1:53adjustments going on on the
- 1:55leaderboard from quarterfinals,
- 1:57and we're going to talk about it.
- 2:00So at last count,
- 2:02there have been well over
- 2:04300 scoring adjustments to
- 2:06the leaderboard from last
- 2:09night at about seven ish.
- 2:12Yeah.
- 2:13My phone started exploding
- 2:15around six o'clock my time.
- 2:17Yeah.
- 2:17That's seven my time.
- 2:18So right around, right around there.
- 2:21Yeah.
- 2:21So, um, so as a coach, um,
- 2:26you get your athletes
- 2:28through quarterfinals weekend,
- 2:30scores are submitted,
- 2:33then where is your head at
- 2:35from that point till today?
- 2:39You know,
- 2:40people at the affiliate who
- 2:41watched us go through quarterfinals,
- 2:43they kind of said, hey,
- 2:46your stress is gone, this, that,
- 2:48and the other.
- 2:48And I'm not stress-free
- 2:51until everybody gets validated videos.
- 2:53I don't think there's
- 2:54anything as a coach –
- 2:57I'm more terrified of in the
- 3:00middle of the night than a
- 3:03major penalty from HQ on
- 3:05one of their videos.
- 3:07That whole process is just so stressful.
- 3:10I mean,
- 3:10the floor plans were looser this year,
- 3:12so there wasn't as much of that,
- 3:14but just...
- 3:16I never want that to happen
- 3:18to any of my athletes.
- 3:20I never want them to have
- 3:21done the workouts multiple times,
- 3:23perhaps put in their effort.
- 3:25You know, we think we did it.
- 3:26We think we did what we set out to do.
- 3:28And then the hammer comes
- 3:31down and your season's over.
- 3:32So I had already went
- 3:35through this a little bit with some teams,
- 3:38um, you know,
- 3:39Madison and Taylor on a team, they, um,
- 3:43did not get a penalty,
- 3:44but two of the teams that
- 3:49one of our coaches carry,
- 3:50Tobias and her gym, they're Ascend teams.
- 3:54They both got penalized.
- 3:55So I had already kind of
- 3:56been through the ringer
- 3:58with that with them.
- 3:59So I knew that I had a
- 4:01feeling after what I saw
- 4:03happen with the teams that
- 4:05that we were gonna see some
- 4:07hefty penalties on the individual side,
- 4:09obviously nothing.
- 4:11I did not expect anything
- 4:12like what we have seen, but for me,
- 4:15the stress doesn't really
- 4:16actually go away until they
- 4:18get that email inviting
- 4:20them to go to semifinals
- 4:21and pay their money.
- 4:24And the way it works that
- 4:25I've heard is that, um,
- 4:29the athlete gets an email
- 4:31as they approve each workout.
- 4:33So like go get an email
- 4:34saying your workout one has
- 4:36been validated and is good to go.
- 4:39Yeah.
- 4:39They get an email and then
- 4:41about the same time they get that email,
- 4:43it updates on their app on
- 4:46the CrossFit games app.
- 4:47So it all kind of happens in conjunction.
- 4:51So let's start with stress I
- 4:53know you've gone through this week.
- 4:55And that is when an athlete
- 4:57types in a score that is not accurate.
- 5:01So that is the first phase
- 5:02of what happened.
- 5:03And it wasn't just that
- 5:05athlete that did it.
- 5:07It actually turned out to be
- 5:08a pretty common mistake
- 5:10around the world where people did not...
- 5:14add in the first 30 reps of
- 5:15workout four they only did
- 5:17the max reps they did on
- 5:19the last barbell yeah so a
- 5:23lot of people cut
- 5:24themselves short 30 reps
- 5:27you reached out to me like
- 5:28hey do you know anybody at
- 5:30HQ we can talk to this was
- 5:32messed up we can't get the
- 5:33score updated when did you
- 5:36know that those scores that
- 5:38CrossFit went in and
- 5:39globally added those 30
- 5:42reps in for those athletes
- 5:45So I saw that Grace Walton's got changed.
- 5:50I had caught a snippet of
- 5:52Siobhan's show after it was
- 5:54that evening or the early
- 5:55the next morning,
- 5:57saw that she had put hers in wrong,
- 5:59was obviously just
- 6:00refreshing the leaderboard over and over.
- 6:03And I saw that hers got
- 6:04changed to her correct score.
- 6:07So that made me feel at
- 6:09least better that we were
- 6:10going to be able to get
- 6:12Hattie's score fixed up.
- 6:16and what that did for your
- 6:17athlete hattie is that she
- 6:20jumped from way out of
- 6:21qualifying to ninth place
- 6:23in the west yeah I mean
- 6:26that that was and the same
- 6:27for grace the same for um
- 6:31marjoram in in europe like
- 6:33they none of them were
- 6:34qualifying and then they
- 6:37were which was awesome yeah
- 6:40that was that was pretty
- 6:41stressful I felt really
- 6:42really bad when I had to call hattie
- 6:46Um, you know, we had talked,
- 6:47she crushed it waiting for
- 6:49the leaderboard to come out.
- 6:51Leaderboard comes out.
- 6:52I refreshed the leaderboard,
- 6:54scroll down through the first page.
- 6:56Don't see Hattie scroll back up.
- 7:00Still don't see Hattie
- 7:01realize something's wrong.
- 7:03Search her name, see the wrong score.
- 7:06And then I immediately called her like,
- 7:08Hey, really sorry to ruin your night,
- 7:11but here's what you need to do.
- 7:14Um,
- 7:15So T. Cain says,
- 7:18imagine the stress these
- 7:19athletes are feeling.
- 7:19CrossFit needs to have a better system.
- 7:22Hattie reached out to me
- 7:23after I talked to you,
- 7:25and she was beating herself up so much,
- 7:29saying she checked her score three times.
- 7:32It was just a simple mistake.
- 7:36And I cannot imagine the
- 7:39stress they go through.
- 7:40Their whole year depends on
- 7:43these qualifiers.
- 7:45And if they don't make it
- 7:46through to get to that live
- 7:47competition where you're truly assessed –
- 7:50For your fitness,
- 7:52the year's a waste almost.
- 7:55Yeah, I agree.
- 7:57As a coach,
- 7:58I fall pretty squarely in the
- 8:01camp with Coach Kotler on
- 8:04this whole thing.
- 8:05I don't think there's
- 8:06anything more important for
- 8:08the sport side of CrossFit
- 8:10right now than getting rid of the –
- 8:16qualifying process to the
- 8:17second highest level of
- 8:19competition in our sport
- 8:21not taking place on the
- 8:22internet I don't I don't like
- 8:27Every year, we have some kind of an issue.
- 8:30A bunch of elite athletes
- 8:31didn't put their score in correctly.
- 8:32They got it fixed.
- 8:34Some people say they should.
- 8:35Some people say they shouldn't.
- 8:37It was a clerical error.
- 8:38Most of those athletes have
- 8:39a video proving that they did the reps.
- 8:43That's one issue.
- 8:44Now we have all these
- 8:46penalties that are coming down the pipe,
- 8:49right or wrong.
- 8:51I mean,
- 8:51I'm sure we'll get into more of
- 8:52that with like judges who
- 8:54went out to help with camps, this, that,
- 8:57and the other,
- 8:57the stress of the video review,
- 8:59the human error of it.
- 9:00It's online setups, floor plans,
- 9:04measurements.
- 9:04It's just the, it's,
- 9:07it's just ridiculous at this point.
- 9:08Like I,
- 9:10I understand creating a structure
- 9:12where there's some sort of
- 9:13a circuit or in-person
- 9:15competitions for points, whatever.
- 9:17I understand that's a lot of work.
- 9:21but I just think this is
- 9:23ridiculous at this point.
- 9:26I think that that'll be show two,
- 9:29like how to change the
- 9:30season to make this better.
- 9:31Cause I have,
- 9:33I have a lot of thoughts on that.
- 9:34I was actually talking with
- 9:37Justin's wife this morning
- 9:38and we were solving all the
- 9:40world's problems.
- 9:42Yeah.
- 9:43I ironically enough, my fiance and I,
- 9:47we drive to West Virginia every year.
- 9:49That's where she's from for
- 9:50either Thanksgiving or Christmas.
- 9:51And I,
- 9:52we were driving back this year on
- 9:53our way back and,
- 9:55Overly caffeinated and many
- 9:57hours of the road in,
- 9:58and we just started coming
- 9:59up with this whole system
- 10:01for different comps can get
- 10:03you different points based
- 10:04on the programming and the
- 10:05strength of field.
- 10:06And you have to get this
- 10:08many points and you can
- 10:09still get points through quarterfinals,
- 10:11but it's like your last chance.
- 10:12And it's really heavily.
- 10:14It was just,
- 10:14we went on like a tear and
- 10:16then it was hilarious
- 10:16because the next day we
- 10:18couldn't remember anything
- 10:19we came up with because we
- 10:20were just so tired.
- 10:23Um, so.
- 10:26And Chelsea, I see your comment.
- 10:28I do not know what's going
- 10:29on with Caitlin.
- 10:30I don't know.
- 10:31CrossFit is not disclosing anything.
- 10:35So it's really hard to track
- 10:37what's going on unless...
- 10:39And I do know her coach.
- 10:41I could reach out.
- 10:42But a lot of times coaches
- 10:45like to keep that private
- 10:45until they know a final resolution.
- 10:48So...
- 10:52So now we go through this penalty thing,
- 10:53right?
- 10:54And it's like nothing we
- 10:55have ever seen in CrossFit before.
- 10:58You know,
- 10:58usually you get the list of penalties.
- 11:00It's maybe 15 names long.
- 11:03Yeah.
- 11:04Either it's major, minor, or rejected.
- 11:10But this time, like we talked,
- 11:11well over 300 scoring adjustments.
- 11:15It was so bad.
- 11:15I was trying to figure it out.
- 11:18And thank God for Mike
- 11:19Halpin and the known and
- 11:20knowable Instagram.
- 11:23I would not have been able to keep up.
- 11:25He's been running these
- 11:27reports about every eight hours.
- 11:29So you can track what's new, what's not.
- 11:34But some of the best movers
- 11:35in the sport are getting
- 11:37dinged major penalties.
- 11:41You as a coach...
- 11:42Does that put fear in you
- 11:44that that's happening?
- 11:47Yeah.
- 11:48Yeah, for sure.
- 11:49I mean, I don't know.
- 11:52The entire quarterfinals
- 11:54process of judging is so difficult.
- 11:59I do, I think,
- 12:02a good job of telling my athletes,
- 12:07because a lot of times I am
- 12:08also the person judging
- 12:09them for the quarterfinals.
- 12:11And I tell them, I will no rep you.
- 12:12And I tell them,
- 12:14I will no rep you because I
- 12:15don't want you to get a
- 12:17penalty from video review.
- 12:20And I kind of try to scare
- 12:22them straight basically in
- 12:24terms of you need to move perfectly.
- 12:27Like you have to keep your
- 12:29movement together as best you can.
- 12:31But even then it's still, it's just so,
- 12:35I mean, Patrick Vellner,
- 12:36one of the best movers in
- 12:36the sport got hit with a major penalty.
- 12:39Like I don't think he's ever had a,
- 12:40video penalty before at all, you know it's,
- 12:46it is pretty stressful.
- 12:49And I, I don't know.
- 12:52There's a lot of different
- 12:53thoughts that go into my
- 12:54mind and different things
- 12:56that I think play into the
- 12:58video penalties that we're
- 13:01seeing potentially.
- 13:03And we can dive into some of that stuff,
- 13:05I guess,
- 13:06once we get into the more nuanced
- 13:07side of it and why we think
- 13:08this might be happening, but it,
- 13:10it's quarterfinals is the worst.
- 13:13Like, I don't know.
- 13:15I don't know how other coaches feel,
- 13:17you know, like, you know,
- 13:18last year you called me the
- 13:20new kid on the block.
- 13:20I don't know a lot of the other coaches.
- 13:22Well, I'm not in with the, you know,
- 13:26the clicks yet or anything like that,
- 13:28but yeah,
- 13:29I quarterfinals is the bane
- 13:31of my existence.
- 13:32It's the most stressful time of the year.
- 13:34I mean, semifinals is obviously stressful,
- 13:36but it's just this different thing.
- 13:38And with it being as long as
- 13:39it was this year, it was a week of just,
- 13:44just stress.
- 13:46Well,
- 13:46you go into the weekend with a blind
- 13:47leaderboard and,
- 13:49Does your athlete redo?
- 13:50Do they not redo?
- 13:51Is the score good enough?
- 13:52Is it not good enough?
- 13:54Then you come out of it and
- 13:55you've got this going on.
- 13:57Yeah.
- 13:57It's, it's insane.
- 13:59So T Kane says page powers,
- 14:01top 10 at the games doesn't
- 14:03get to compete because her
- 14:04head was looking down at the box.
- 14:06I think that's been misinterpreted a tiny,
- 14:09tiny bit.
- 14:10Yeah.
- 14:11From my understanding,
- 14:12it was not the head.
- 14:13It's the shoulders.
- 14:15Yes.
- 14:16you can be looking down as
- 14:18long as your shoulders were
- 14:19over top your hips, which is, you know,
- 14:23difficult.
- 14:24I don't,
- 14:24I don't disagree with what he's
- 14:26getting at.
- 14:28And I'm sure you've heard,
- 14:30and I've heard step overs
- 14:32would have solved this.
- 14:33I don't disagree.
- 14:34I also don't disagree that I
- 14:39have seen videos from
- 14:40athletes who got penalized
- 14:41and they did not hold the
- 14:43standard that was in that scorecard.
- 14:46So I have,
- 14:48I have two thoughts about this one.
- 14:50We've been begging for
- 14:52CrossFit to hold the standard forever.
- 14:56Yep.
- 14:57Now they are and everybody's pissed.
- 15:00Every.
- 15:01Yeah.
- 15:01I, I said the same thing.
- 15:03I was talking to Jacob this
- 15:06morning earlier and you know,
- 15:09a large part of me agrees with that.
- 15:11We have been yelling at the sky,
- 15:13how it's not a judge competition and,
- 15:16this that and the other and
- 15:18now they drop the hammer
- 15:19and nobody likes it now my
- 15:24my counterpoint to that is
- 15:27the shoulder head area has
- 15:29never been a point of
- 15:30emphasis as something
- 15:33that's being judged even at
- 15:34a live competition
- 15:36Yep.
- 15:37Right.
- 15:38So if you're going to make that change,
- 15:41then announce that that
- 15:42will be a point of emphasis
- 15:45that the extension must be knees, hips,
- 15:48shoulders.
- 15:49Yes.
- 15:49Must be shoulders.
- 15:51Yeah.
- 15:52Yeah.
- 15:54Again,
- 15:54I think this just comes back to the
- 15:56online qualifier.
- 15:59It's hard to pick movements
- 16:02that are easy to judge at
- 16:05maximal velocity.
- 16:07in an online format.
- 16:09It's just difficult.
- 16:13You know, I think J.R.
- 16:14said it or somebody else
- 16:16about why we haven't seen
- 16:17shouldered overhead.
- 16:18Very hard to judge at maximal velocity.
- 16:25yeah I just it's it's it's
- 16:28kind of six one way half a
- 16:29dozen the other like you
- 16:30said I think step overs
- 16:32would have been a much
- 16:33better movement I think if
- 16:34they could have let people
- 16:35know about the head and
- 16:37shoulders because that is
- 16:39to me also kind of an odd
- 16:40standard you're loading the
- 16:42arms the muscle action
- 16:45portion of the movement is
- 16:46not the thoracic spine like
- 16:49as long as your hips knees
- 16:51are extended and you're standing tall
- 16:54why why are you getting that
- 16:57much more metabolic work
- 17:00and work capacity out of
- 17:01that little bit of the
- 17:02movement I don't think so I
- 17:05don't know yeah
- 17:09Yeah, and I do not debate this either,
- 17:11Jay Birch.
- 17:12Soft knees.
- 17:12I've seen videos, lots of soft knees.
- 17:15Lots of soft knees.
- 17:16Right.
- 17:17I think where people are
- 17:18upset is the shoulder
- 17:20aspect because it has never
- 17:23been an emphasis before.
- 17:24Now it is.
- 17:25Something I noticed watching
- 17:28a couple videos,
- 17:30a lot of people cornered the box.
- 17:33And depending on how big
- 17:34your feet are and how big
- 17:35the box you're using,
- 17:37you don't have as much real
- 17:38estate to plant that off foot.
- 17:41And I think while athletes
- 17:43were doing that as a way to move quicker,
- 17:46some athletes that might
- 17:48have actually been part of
- 17:50the reason they didn't.
- 17:52put the weight on that other
- 17:53foot and extend all the way
- 17:55because they had most of
- 17:56their weight on that other
- 17:56foot and there was just a
- 17:57little less real estate
- 17:58than they might have been
- 17:59comfortable with when they
- 18:01were super fatigued to put
- 18:03all their weight on the
- 18:03other side of that on that
- 18:05foot potentially
- 18:09potentially because that
- 18:10was the cornering was a
- 18:11whole thing for me and my
- 18:13athletes most of my
- 18:15athletes did not corner the boxes um
- 18:19I know that eventually it
- 18:20came out that that was okay.
- 18:22But the first thing I
- 18:23thought of was uncommon movement clause.
- 18:25I'm not playing with that.
- 18:27I'm not the picture.
- 18:30She's flush.
- 18:31We're going to be flush.
- 18:33Like I'm not doing that.
- 18:34Right.
- 18:35So, yeah, but here we are.
- 18:39When we talk about this,
- 18:40a lot of times the picture
- 18:41and the words don't match, right?
- 18:44in the standards right so
- 18:46you know it's really hard
- 18:47to know what to go by and
- 18:48I'm and I was camped out
- 18:50with jamie all weekend yeah
- 18:52and we had that discussion
- 18:53like is it worth cornering
- 18:55and I'm like how much time
- 18:57you saving yeah yeah and
- 19:00then if they do say
- 19:01something yeah chelsea I
- 19:03just saw nick matthew was
- 19:05out in the latest run yeah
- 19:06I saw crazy the number of
- 19:08games athletes that are out um
- 19:13So, so we have that.
- 19:17And the thing that's frustrating,
- 19:18and it goes back to what you said,
- 19:20the second most important
- 19:23qualifier to get to the games is online.
- 19:27If you have a judge in a live competition,
- 19:30they're going to tell you
- 19:31no rep and you're going to
- 19:33correct it online.
- 19:37You don't get that feedback.
- 19:39So you don't know what's wrong.
- 19:41And then you get a major penalty.
- 19:43Yeah.
- 19:44And well, and that leads us to the,
- 19:45I guess the other part of
- 19:46this that started to come to light is,
- 19:49you know,
- 19:49camps or individuals having
- 19:50people out there to judge
- 19:53them that are qualified.
- 19:57Right.
- 19:58In whatever sense of the
- 19:59word we can actually say
- 20:00that is in the CrossFit space.
- 20:01Cause I don't think the
- 20:01judge's course actually
- 20:02qualifies you to enough to
- 20:05judge people that a little bit.
- 20:07Right, because you have experience judging,
- 20:09yeah?
- 20:10So the AFJ is a group of
- 20:13people that I used to judge
- 20:14with who have organized.
- 20:17And they're the people that
- 20:18volunteer their time and go
- 20:20to all of these, like go to Rogue,
- 20:22go to Waterpalooza,
- 20:25go to all these events.
- 20:26They usually are the ones
- 20:28doing semifinals.
- 20:32And then they do some of the games.
- 20:35Now,
- 20:35they don't usually get to go into the
- 20:37final heats of the elite individuals.
- 20:41That is the red shirts.
- 20:43Right.
- 20:46But they do all of the other stuff.
- 20:47And I have contended for a long time,
- 20:49I think they're better
- 20:50judges than the red shirts.
- 20:52Well,
- 20:53they might be judging more frequently.
- 20:56And I would contend most of them are.
- 20:59are better than the red
- 21:00shirts right most of them
- 21:03um you get a couple
- 21:05one-offs that that make a
- 21:07bad name for them they just
- 21:12their their organization
- 21:13just got ruined yeah why
- 21:18would you right why hire
- 21:21them if it's not going to
- 21:22guarantee you anything yeah yeah it's uh
- 21:30I just think this all
- 21:31alludes to the greater
- 21:33issue of it's not optimal.
- 21:37It's not best practice to
- 21:38have this qualifying
- 21:41competition be online.
- 21:44Um, and I,
- 21:46I understand that there's
- 21:47constraints in the system.
- 21:48I understand that, you know,
- 21:50CrossFit has a small staff.
- 21:51I understand these things, but geez,
- 21:55Louise, man, um,
- 21:58It's just – I mean when you have athletes,
- 22:01every spectrum of athlete from a –
- 22:04know the afj judges coaches
- 22:08who have been coaching in
- 22:09the space for a decade the
- 22:12professional coaches at the
- 22:13highest level all the way
- 22:14down to you know people who
- 22:16might be just trying to
- 22:17qualify for semifinals
- 22:18their first time and they
- 22:20just had their buddy who's
- 22:21an l1 judge them I venture
- 22:23to say most people are
- 22:24doing their bet they're
- 22:25they're attempting to hold
- 22:26the standard now the degree
- 22:27in which they're being held
- 22:30to the standard could
- 22:31probably vary based on the
- 22:32person judging them
- 22:34But when there's this many
- 22:35penalties across that range
- 22:37of people who have been
- 22:40judged by those types of judges,
- 22:43it just – where do we go from here?
- 22:46Who do you get to judge you?
- 22:50I try to be a very harsh
- 22:52judge with my athletes here
- 22:54at quarterfinals,
- 22:55but I always tell them I am
- 22:57not the final authority.
- 23:00right?
- 23:01And it's obviously difficult
- 23:02for a coach because you're
- 23:03emotionally invested to some point,
- 23:05but it's also,
- 23:06I can't freeze frame in real time.
- 23:10I like to think I have a
- 23:11good coach's eye and a good judge's eye,
- 23:14but I'm human.
- 23:16I have human error, right?
- 23:19And if somebody can zoom in,
- 23:20slow down and freeze the frame,
- 23:22I can't save you from that.
- 23:25Only you can save yourself.
- 23:26And we hope that
- 23:29you know,
- 23:30the athlete has to hold the standard,
- 23:31but it's still just not optimal.
- 23:34So Jay Burch says that
- 23:35depends how many AFJ
- 23:37members were judging people
- 23:39with a major penalty.
- 23:41So where this comes into play,
- 23:42Jay Burch is, Hiller put out a video,
- 23:46and on that thumbnail,
- 23:47he has Paige and Brooke, Brooke Wells,
- 23:51Paige Powers.
- 23:52The AFJ judges are right behind them.
- 23:56I know both of those people.
- 23:59And I can tell you they are
- 24:01some of the best judges in the business.
- 24:03Yeah.
- 24:06Um,
- 24:07both of those people got major
- 24:09penalties on that workout.
- 24:14If it's,
- 24:15if the major penalty was the
- 24:16shoulders and head area,
- 24:19we've never been trained
- 24:20that I've never been
- 24:21trained to look for that in
- 24:24a competition.
- 24:27When you have your judges
- 24:28meeting and you go over the
- 24:29standards of movement and
- 24:30what you should be looking at,
- 24:33that's never a point of emphasis.
- 24:37So if you've changed that
- 24:38point of emphasis,
- 24:39it doesn't matter how good
- 24:40the judge you bring in is,
- 24:42they don't know what that
- 24:43point of emphasis is.
- 24:46Right?
- 24:46Yeah.
- 24:48Just this crew they hired to
- 24:49do video review.
- 24:51Right.
- 24:51So now we're not on the same page.
- 24:58Yes, Corey.
- 24:59I do know everybody.
- 25:00I don't, but I actually,
- 25:01they actually came out of my region, uh,
- 25:05during regionals.
- 25:07So I knew them before cause
- 25:09they have both been
- 25:10promoted up through the judging ranks.
- 25:11Okay.
- 25:12So they're not even just
- 25:13like your regular ordinary judge now.
- 25:16Yeah.
- 25:17They're like leads and heads
- 25:18of judging at events.
- 25:22And when I,
- 25:23when I got to know them in the
- 25:24regional world,
- 25:25they were just my P on level.
- 25:31Yeah, it's such a weird, nuanced thing.
- 25:37Going back to what you said,
- 25:39we want harder standards,
- 25:40we want people to get penalties,
- 25:42and then everybody gets
- 25:43penalties dropped on them,
- 25:44and they're massive
- 25:46penalties that are taking
- 25:46games athletes out of going to semifinals,
- 25:48and then it's, well,
- 25:50we have these professional judges,
- 25:53why did that not do any good?
- 25:55I feel like it's, on one hand, yes,
- 25:58we want the
- 26:01video review to be thorough
- 26:03but then the other hand is
- 26:04well I had this
- 26:05professional judge what do
- 26:09you want from me so we
- 26:12already have a couple shows
- 26:13coming up now because we're
- 26:14going to do new season
- 26:16format the other one I want
- 26:18to bring up is standardized
- 26:20rule book for the season
- 26:24that that if you're going
- 26:25to do a burpee box step up
- 26:28this is the standard for the season yeah
- 26:33Every other sport has that.
- 26:35The NFL has a kickoff rule.
- 26:36They have a penalty for this.
- 26:39And if it changes, it goes to committee,
- 26:42and that committee has to
- 26:42vote that that change is being made,
- 26:45and then everybody knows
- 26:46that that rule has changed.
- 26:52I think here we are.
- 26:53We're sitting where some
- 26:55people got the news that
- 26:56they wanted to emphasize
- 26:57something different,
- 26:58and another group didn't.
- 27:01And that other group isn't just the AFJ.
- 27:03It's you as a coach.
- 27:05It's the athletes.
- 27:06That whole group didn't get word.
- 27:09Yeah.
- 27:14Yeah.
- 27:16It's kind of a mess.
- 27:20I feel bad, obviously,
- 27:21for all the athletes that
- 27:22are getting major penalties.
- 27:24I do feel like I'm glad
- 27:25there is such a thorough
- 27:29video review being done.
- 27:31Um, and I, yeah,
- 27:33I think I would say I could see more,
- 27:37I would give more empathy
- 27:39to the head and shoulders
- 27:41issue versus the standing
- 27:43up of the hips and knees at
- 27:46full extension.
- 27:47Cause that was in the
- 27:48standard clearly demonstrated.
- 27:50Um, I mean, I think so.
- 27:56Jake Chapman just said
- 27:57they're so used to getting
- 27:58away with skirting the lines for so long.
- 28:04I don't think everybody, okay, I get it.
- 28:08We've wanted good standards, right?
- 28:11But for the most part,
- 28:12the athletes move well.
- 28:14You have a couple outliers
- 28:16that get focused on in
- 28:18different videos and
- 28:19YouTube channels that don't, right?
- 28:25It goes back to the old adage.
- 28:26If you're in a class and 95%
- 28:28of the class fails...
- 28:32Is it the students or is it the teacher?
- 28:36We have never, ever,
- 28:38ever had a competition
- 28:39weekend that had 300 plus
- 28:42scoring adjustments on one workout.
- 28:45I bet we clear 700 by the
- 28:47weekend if they're going
- 28:49through three and four.
- 28:53I bet we clear 700.
- 28:57Well, okay.
- 28:59First, the first thing,
- 29:02I think it's hard for
- 29:08coaches to no-rip their
- 29:11athletes in the
- 29:12quarterfinal stage on qualifiers.
- 29:16I think they don't want to
- 29:20have to do that.
- 29:23And you're right.
- 29:24Most of the athletes do move very well.
- 29:29So I think you can kind of create a,
- 29:32and also it's unideal for a
- 29:34coach to be judging their athlete.
- 29:35But a lot of times at the
- 29:36quarterfinal stage, because of manpower,
- 29:39that's what has to happen.
- 29:41Right.
- 29:41Uh,
- 29:42like there were many examples over the
- 29:44last week where depending
- 29:45on who was going,
- 29:48I was not their judge or I
- 29:49was their judge and I
- 29:50wasn't their kind of emotional support,
- 29:53pace keeper person.
- 29:55Um,
- 29:58I judged Jacob on several of his workouts.
- 30:01And when I'm judging Jacob
- 30:04for 95% of that workout
- 30:07that I'm judging him,
- 30:08I'm not his cheerleader.
- 30:10I'm just trying to be as
- 30:12robotic as possible about rep.
- 30:15Like, did you stand up?
- 30:17Did you do this?
- 30:17Did you do that?
- 30:18Did you do whatever the
- 30:19movement is supposed to be?
- 30:20But it's very hard.
- 30:22It's not ideal, right?
- 30:23So I think there's...
- 30:25a little bit of play there I
- 30:27think it's a little grayer
- 30:28than just saying athletes
- 30:29skirt the standards all the
- 30:30time and now they're
- 30:31getting hammered and that
- 30:33is what it is um and I
- 30:38don't think because he also
- 30:39said it's not 95 of the
- 30:41students it's probably not
- 30:4395 of the students but it's
- 30:44also they're not video
- 30:46reviewing everybody so to
- 30:49your point about the school right it's
- 30:53we can look back.
- 30:54I mean,
- 30:55ideally when this is all done and
- 30:57see how many people got
- 30:58penalized of how many
- 30:59people got video reviewed
- 31:02and then we'll know.
- 31:03Yeah.
- 31:05If we ever know how many
- 31:06people got video reviewed,
- 31:07cause that's probably a close secret.
- 31:12Yeah.
- 31:12Yeah.
- 31:15So,
- 31:16so then I don't even know where I want
- 31:20to go anymore.
- 31:25Do you think they're going
- 31:34to look through three as
- 31:36hard as they're looking through one?
- 31:42I'd steal my answer from JR,
- 31:45where JR thinks that
- 31:47they're going to make sure
- 31:48that everything was measured properly.
- 31:50Sure.
- 31:53then it'll get a quick
- 31:54cursory look over and then
- 31:58they'll probably hit four
- 31:59as hard as they hit two or
- 32:01hit hit one yeah I could
- 32:04see that I I'm I'm leaning
- 32:07toward they they might go
- 32:09through three really hard
- 32:10because for the teams they
- 32:13dug in those muscle ups on team event one
- 32:20Most of a lot of the
- 32:21penalties I know of for the
- 32:23teams were event one muscle ups.
- 32:31I think, I think because that's a,
- 32:35what that one was the 15 minute cap,
- 32:37right?
- 32:38Yeah.
- 32:40I think that when you have a 15 minute cap,
- 32:43it's tough to get through
- 32:44as many videos as you need to.
- 32:47see and that's an
- 32:47interesting point because
- 32:50because workout one you can
- 32:54fast forward through the
- 32:54rest sure you can probably
- 32:57fast forward yeah and
- 32:59you're just really doing
- 33:01the snatch and the box step
- 33:02up so I guess this is a
- 33:04question I don't know the
- 33:05answer to but it's
- 33:07something that I got
- 33:08curious about during team
- 33:10quarterfinals because i
- 33:12I had a team in the East.
- 33:13I had a team in the West.
- 33:14I was helping with two other
- 33:15teams in the West that are ascend teams.
- 33:20And I also know a lot of people.
- 33:22So friends of mine would
- 33:24send me their videos and Hey,
- 33:25do you think this is good?
- 33:26This, that, and the other, you know,
- 33:27do you think the score will
- 33:28play stuff like that?
- 33:31If I was judging those videos,
- 33:35I only need to watch as
- 33:37long as it takes to get to
- 33:39a penalty threshold.
- 33:43don't have to watch the
- 33:44whole video I only have to
- 33:46watch the whole video if
- 33:48you don't mess up yeah
- 33:52because once it hits major
- 33:53penalty it doesn't matter
- 33:54if it's a major major
- 33:55penalty because it's the same right
- 33:58So it's like I guess I would
- 34:00have to watch through to
- 34:01see if you hit a minor penalty threshold.
- 34:04I would have to continue to
- 34:04watch through to see if you
- 34:05hit a major penalty threshold.
- 34:07So I guess you – but if
- 34:08there was a video that
- 34:09accrued a major penalty,
- 34:10I only need to watch until
- 34:12you hit that threshold,
- 34:14and then I'm done.
- 34:17So I see both sides of that,
- 34:19but obviously the video
- 34:20review process is largely secretive.
- 34:23And the other thing is on
- 34:25that muscle up workout and
- 34:26you're only talking the top
- 34:29X number that even got to the muscle ups.
- 34:35Fair, fair.
- 34:38There was also to be fair,
- 34:40a lot less teams.
- 34:41Right.
- 34:42Um,
- 34:44and they were doing muscle ups from the
- 34:45jump, right?
- 34:46First interval.
- 34:47We had muscle ups.
- 34:48Those muscle ups don't occur
- 34:49until the end.
- 34:51Um,
- 34:54outsource it t-mobile that's
- 34:55hilarious um what did tk
- 34:59now do you think there's
- 34:59hope for page and other
- 35:01athletes outside the top 40
- 35:05have you have you ever
- 35:08heard how many appeals have
- 35:09you heard of being one very very very few
- 35:16So I have, as a coach,
- 35:18filed two appeals or
- 35:21assisted an athlete
- 35:22technically in filing two appeals.
- 35:24And I won one of them.
- 35:28And it was Madison last year
- 35:32on the GHD row VF workout.
- 35:37She does GHD sit-ups very
- 35:39fast and she flicks her fingers down.
- 35:44So where the camera was set up,
- 35:47To see her rower and her GHDs,
- 35:52you couldn't really see her
- 35:54fingers touch the plates at full speed.
- 35:58So I screenshot every single
- 36:02GHD sit-up showing her
- 36:04hands touching the bottom.
- 36:06And then I put it in Google
- 36:07Drive folders or in folders.
- 36:10And she sent that in with her appeal.
- 36:13And we won that appeal to me, to me,
- 36:18filing an appeal with
- 36:19CrossFit HQ is like going to court,
- 36:23except you are guilty until
- 36:25proven innocent.
- 36:25You have to,
- 36:27the way I think about it is
- 36:28you have to present beyond
- 36:31any refute that they were
- 36:34wrong and you did it right.
- 36:36And that's just a tall ask.
- 36:39So I don't know.
- 36:40I, I,
- 36:43I don't know how many of
- 36:44those athletes will win the appeals.
- 36:47I am not confident in that.
- 36:54Yeah.
- 36:55Which sucks.
- 36:56Right.
- 36:57Which really sucks.
- 36:59Because we've lost already
- 37:01probably four games
- 37:02athletes at this point.
- 37:04Paige, Nick Matthew, Sidney Wells,
- 37:08Sidney Wells.
- 37:10Brooks on the teetering edge.
- 37:13I mean,
- 37:13that's the thing with them going
- 37:15through three or four.
- 37:18Vellner, Bill Leahy, not a games athlete,
- 37:21but relatively high profile.
- 37:23Everybody wants to see what he can do.
- 37:25If you got a penalty and
- 37:26you're down in 30th, if you get a minor,
- 37:30you're out on anything else.
- 37:34Because the separation value
- 37:35was so low in these workouts.
- 37:37Scores were so bottlenecked,
- 37:38especially four.
- 37:41couple in Europe too Lazar
- 37:43jukic took a pretty big hit
- 37:45is he out uh he's not out
- 37:47at this time I knew he got
- 37:48a penalty but I hadn't
- 37:49looked to see it was a
- 37:51major he dropped like 27
- 37:52spots um so I like I've
- 38:02been following this all day here's
- 38:06Mike Halpin's Google Doc.
- 38:09As you can see,
- 38:10it was last run at noon today.
- 38:13Okay.
- 38:15And then if anything
- 38:16happened different from the 7.30 run,
- 38:18he put a new beside it.
- 38:20Oh, Samantha Pugh.
- 38:21I didn't realize she was out.
- 38:24Yeah.
- 38:25So everybody in red is out currently.
- 38:30Jeez, Brooke Wells is still in.
- 38:36Paige Powers out, Zoe Warren out.
- 38:38Yeah.
- 38:43Oh, Lena Richter's out?
- 38:44Dang.
- 38:44But she was going team anyway.
- 38:47Oh, that's true, yeah.
- 38:48Her and Mathilde both got major penalties,
- 38:51but they're going team.
- 38:52There's Tia's penalty.
- 38:53Yeah.
- 38:58Amy Kringle dropped, but she's still in.
- 39:01Hope Cicero,
- 39:07she's on the Masters leaderboard, too.
- 39:09Sarah Sigmundsdottir dropped five spots,
- 39:11but still in.
- 39:12She's still in.
- 39:15Ashley Wansney's still in.
- 39:18Yeah.
- 39:19A lot of the newer ones were
- 39:20minor penalties.
- 39:21Yeah.
- 39:23Yeah.
- 39:25Like Kyra Milligan was born,
- 39:27but didn't even change a place.
- 39:29Interesting.
- 39:32Cody Vitito,
- 39:34someone I followed last year
- 39:35in the semifinal series,
- 39:38didn't move a place.
- 39:39She got a two-rep penalty, but didn't.
- 39:44Scuds,
- 39:45the person in the picture showing
- 39:47what the movement standard is,
- 39:50got a minor penalty.
- 39:51I love that.
- 39:53I love that.
- 39:55Yeah.
- 39:55You know, it's James Hobart got one too.
- 40:01So yeah.
- 40:02Arguably like the poster boy
- 40:04for CrossFit movements.
- 40:05Right.
- 40:05Right.
- 40:06And Allison Scud's the female poster girl.
- 40:08Yeah.
- 40:10The only thing would be
- 40:10better if Tola was doing
- 40:12Indy and he got one too.
- 40:15Oh man.
- 40:19Yeah.
- 40:21Grace.
- 40:22So here Kaya.
- 40:23Yeah.
- 40:26gabe there's gabe townsend
- 40:27yeah tiffany rocker
- 40:30samantha tolbert yikes
- 40:34yikes yeah and then with
- 40:37the men there we go poster
- 40:41man he's old now fair
- 40:42enough wad zombie poster
- 40:43man poster gentleman how's
- 40:45that uh casper got a bit
- 40:48major penalty gamma mark 76
- 40:51places kill my torres
- 41:01Dallin Pepper was one of the new ones.
- 41:02It was a minor.
- 41:04Didn't even change a place.
- 41:14Medeiros got a minor.
- 41:18Henry.
- 41:19Henrik Hapelainen got one,
- 41:21but it didn't change him.
- 41:22913 spots he fell.
- 41:23That can't be a movement thing.
- 41:30That had to be me.
- 41:31There's something wrong with the video.
- 41:33Yeah, there's something wrong.
- 41:35There's James Hobart.
- 41:37Fell 588 spots.
- 41:43I would be so curious if
- 41:45James would tell everybody
- 41:47what he got a penalty for.
- 41:52One more minor penalty for Brooke Wilson.
- 41:53She's out.
- 41:54Yes, correct.
- 41:57Well,
- 41:57and what's interesting about this too
- 41:58is – okay, so let's say you were 43rd.
- 42:02Now you're 39th.
- 42:07You better hope your video
- 42:08is squeaky clean because
- 42:11they're going to get down there, right?
- 42:16Because they're going
- 42:17through – Cody Vitito was
- 42:18not in the top 40 before
- 42:19she got a penalty, right?
- 42:23so I don't know who's having
- 42:24a more exciting afternoon
- 42:25what uh jay birch had to go
- 42:28uh I think some frogs there
- 42:31you go games of course game
- 42:34legends will be lined up
- 42:35next to some dude you've
- 42:36never heard of hey maybe
- 42:39it's an opportunity for
- 42:40people to get some exposure yeah I mean
- 42:49I do not know what's
- 42:49happening with either of them.
- 42:51I'm a big fan of Freya.
- 42:53I've been friends with her
- 42:54for a couple years.
- 42:55Really hoping she gets through.
- 42:59And no, I did not see Heppner's story.
- 43:03I saw him destroy the wall
- 43:05ball burpee boxer burpee workout, though.
- 43:08Yeah.
- 43:11Disgusting.
- 43:12I feel like it's going to be
- 43:13a very long and...
- 43:17anxious weekend because they
- 43:21are supposed to be done
- 43:22monday but it can also go
- 43:25longer than that so you
- 43:30need to pull it up he makes
- 43:31a hell of a good point I
- 43:36like I like when cory
- 43:37directs my show is he your
- 43:43uh unknown producer
- 43:47It'd be better if he was
- 43:48somewhere near a computer
- 43:49and he could pull it up for me.
- 43:50Right.
- 43:55Okay.
- 43:59I think there's been some
- 44:00penalties in the age groups as well.
- 44:04Yeah,
- 44:05I don't know if that's... I think
- 44:07those are on Halpins as well.
- 44:09All right.
- 44:12Let's see what we got here.
- 44:19This is riveting, Corey.
- 44:22Corey, there was nothing there.
- 44:26There's only two stories, Corey.
- 44:28I went through both stories, man.
- 44:32Can't be that.
- 44:35It probably expired, Corey.
- 44:38Probably expired.
- 44:40Is it a real?
- 44:43Oh, it's a real.
- 44:44An opinion from a guy on his
- 44:45baby's moon in the Bahamas.
- 44:47Here we go.
- 44:47Two thoughts.
- 44:49CrossFit controls the sport.
- 44:50They can do whatever they want.
- 44:52That's the thing you
- 44:53probably don't want to hear, right?
- 44:54They can do whatever they want.
- 44:55It's their sport.
- 44:55If you don't like it,
- 44:57All I can do is really cry about it.
- 44:59I learned the hard way in 2018.
- 45:00It takes a lot of forearms.
- 45:02But here we are.
- 45:03Now,
- 45:03because they can do it doesn't mean
- 45:04they should do it.
- 45:05So my second thing is,
- 45:07what's the fix for it?
- 45:08If you're going to give that
- 45:09many penalties for something,
- 45:11then at a minimum, at least,
- 45:13you need to be looking at
- 45:14the highest penalty given
- 45:16by gender in each region.
- 45:18What does that mean?
- 45:19That means if you're going
- 45:20to give Paige Powers a 600
- 45:22and some odd placement on Event 1,
- 45:26you need to be looking at
- 45:27all the 600 and some odd
- 45:29placements in front of her in her region.
- 45:32Because I guarantee you,
- 45:34I'll make a bet on this
- 45:35virgin pina colada that...
- 45:37200,
- 45:38300 of them didn't even video the
- 45:41workout and didn't even do it correctly.
- 45:43And if Paige Powers did it wrong,
- 45:44then probably 400 of the
- 45:46rest of them did it wrong too.
- 45:47It's not fair to the other athletes.
- 45:49So if you're going to hold
- 45:50everyone to a standard,
- 45:52then hold everyone to the standard,
- 45:54the same standard.
- 45:55But what do I know?
- 45:56I'm just a mathematics guy
- 45:58who never competed a day in
- 45:59his life in CrossFit
- 46:00drinking a peanut clod on the beach.
- 46:04All right,
- 46:05who's ready for some unsolicited advice?
- 46:08Now I'm jealous, right?
- 46:12So he makes a great point and,
- 46:15but there's no way
- 46:16CrossFit's ever going to do that.
- 46:18My answer to his point would
- 46:22be let less people do
- 46:24quarterfinals so you can judge everyone.
- 46:32There you go.
- 46:34That would be my answer.
- 46:37Um,
- 46:38but me not being a fan of top 25% is
- 46:41not new news to anybody who knows me.
- 46:42So whatever.
- 46:45Yeah.
- 46:46And that ship,
- 46:47that ship has definitely
- 46:48sailed with the money that
- 46:49they made on this.
- 46:50Oh yeah.
- 46:51Oh yeah.
- 46:52Um, it's funny.
- 46:55You brought up the different
- 46:56season cause Ashley Kotler
- 46:58and I were talking this
- 46:59morning that we had the perfect system,
- 47:01um,
- 47:03We had the sanctionals.
- 47:05CrossFit didn't even have to fund them.
- 47:08People were willing to line
- 47:09up and do it for them.
- 47:11Yeah.
- 47:13I think it would be good to
- 47:14have a degree of oversight
- 47:15on the sanctionals in terms
- 47:17of the programming,
- 47:20at least to some degree.
- 47:21And that's why I think...
- 47:24But why it was okay is you had 30 shots.
- 47:27Yeah.
- 47:29Yeah.
- 47:30if you didn't like the
- 47:31programming at this one,
- 47:32you got 29 other opportunities.
- 47:36Yeah.
- 47:36I don't disagree.
- 47:37I also, I mean,
- 47:39it would drive way more media.
- 47:41It would give people way
- 47:42more opportunity to compete.
- 47:43It would be great for
- 47:45developing athletes who, you know,
- 47:47are trying there kind of the,
- 47:49I guess what now would be
- 47:50the 40 to a hundred, 120 range,
- 47:54depending on the semifinal.
- 47:59I don't,
- 48:00I don't know why that was
- 48:03tossed out as quickly as it was.
- 48:08COVID.
- 48:09Well, that's true.
- 48:10It was COVID.
- 48:11Yeah.
- 48:12The old Rona.
- 48:14We had to go backwards to
- 48:15get through COVID,
- 48:17and then we just stuck with it.
- 48:21The sanctionals, I do think,
- 48:23were a good start to having
- 48:26a really cool circuit and
- 48:28system of competitions to qualify.
- 48:32Did the sanctionals qualify
- 48:37you for the games or semis?
- 48:40I would even be fine with
- 48:41the circuit only qualifying
- 48:43you for the semifinals.
- 48:46I would be fine with that.
- 48:49So that CrossFit still has a
- 48:50degree of control over the
- 48:52second highest and the
- 48:52highest stage of competition?
- 48:55And I think that there were
- 48:57too many sanctionals anyway.
- 48:59There was a ton.
- 49:01So make a couple of them
- 49:02like they did this year.
- 49:04The semifinals, you know,
- 49:07West Coast Classic and Syndicate Crown,
- 49:10which...
- 49:11loud and live and that crew
- 49:13that had the mac they were
- 49:15actually sanctionals back
- 49:18then make them the
- 49:20semifinals and then so you
- 49:22work your way through the
- 49:23regular season and get to
- 49:24that postseason just like
- 49:27the college bowl series
- 49:28right like yep then you
- 49:30move to the the new year's
- 49:31day six and then you move
- 49:34to the games yep yeah I
- 49:37would I would love to see
- 49:38something like that I think it would be
- 49:40much better for the sport.
- 49:41And TK brings up the, you know,
- 49:44injured athletes,
- 49:46giving them another shot to compete.
- 49:47But I mean,
- 49:48the one that always sticks out
- 49:49to me is if you get sick,
- 49:53like if you get sick during
- 49:54quarterfinals or you get
- 49:55sick during semifinals, I mean,
- 49:57hell in a sanctional season, like,
- 50:01at least if you got sick during semifinals,
- 50:03you had gotten to do other
- 50:04competitions prior, compete in person,
- 50:07get some swag, get some notoriety,
- 50:09go do that stuff versus you
- 50:12get sick at semifinals and
- 50:14there goes your whole year.
- 50:15Poof.
- 50:17Corey,
- 50:17they have not come back to regionals.
- 50:19No regionals.
- 50:20There were like what?
- 50:21Six in the United States,
- 50:22eight in the United States.
- 50:25And only three or five made it?
- 50:27Making a semifinal is
- 50:29exponentially harder than
- 50:30it was to make a regional.
- 50:33Anybody in the top 40 going to a semifinal,
- 50:35if we broke them down into
- 50:37their individual regionals
- 50:38of what the old system was,
- 50:40they would have walked into a regional.
- 50:43No problem.
- 50:44Yep.
- 50:45And you took away the fan
- 50:46base because now the fan
- 50:47base has to travel.
- 50:48Back then,
- 50:50they could do an hour drive to a
- 50:51regional and cheer on their
- 50:53local favorite.
- 50:55Yep.
- 50:56And so we've kind of ruined
- 50:58what was great about the regionals.
- 51:02Yeah.
- 51:03Right?
- 51:06Yeah.
- 51:07It's crazy.
- 51:08I feel bad for all those
- 51:09coaches too because as a coach –
- 51:12I mean,
- 51:13I know I would do anything to do
- 51:15what I could to try to fix
- 51:16a penalty and get an appeal
- 51:18through and so that, you know,
- 51:21their season didn't end in this way.
- 51:23And it's just so stressful
- 51:28and there's only so much you can do.
- 51:29And it's just tough.
- 51:31Like I just,
- 51:34I feel a lot for the athletes
- 51:35and the coaches.
- 51:35Like,
- 51:38I fall on both sides of it.
- 51:39I want to see the standards upheld.
- 51:41If you didn't hold the
- 51:42standards and you got hammered, hey,
- 51:44that's on you.
- 51:46If you did hold the
- 51:46standards and you can prove
- 51:48it in a video and you still got hammered,
- 51:50that freaking sucks, man.
- 51:54Yeah.
- 51:55And again,
- 51:55because everything is kept cloak
- 51:57and dagger,
- 51:59we don't get to see these videos.
- 52:00We have no idea how
- 52:01egregious any of this was.
- 52:04I said something to my fiance last night.
- 52:07Do you think it would be out
- 52:08of turn if they penalized a video,
- 52:15they then made that video public?
- 52:21You end up in a whole court
- 52:23of public appeal potential situation,
- 52:26but they are the governing body.
- 52:27They can do what they want.
- 52:28If they've already – the
- 52:29penalty is done and dusted
- 52:30and they deny the appeal
- 52:32because everybody is going to appeal.
- 52:34Everybody who got a penalty
- 52:35is appealing for sure.
- 52:37So it wouldn't be until after the appeal.
- 52:41And if CrossFit is like, no,
- 52:42this penalty stands,
- 52:45then they release the video publicly.
- 52:48Do you think that's unfair,
- 52:50like leading into unfair scrutiny?
- 52:52Because part of me wants to
- 52:56see these videos so I can
- 52:58make a note like, all right,
- 52:59we got to really dot our
- 53:00T's and cross our I's with, you know,
- 53:03dot our I's and cross our T's.
- 53:04You know what I meant?
- 53:05With stuff like that.
- 53:07But then it's also,
- 53:08do you just bring in a lot
- 53:09of potential hate Cheeto
- 53:12finger people on the athletes?
- 53:16I don't think I can come up
- 53:18with an answer to that in
- 53:19this short amount of time.
- 53:22But what I will say is,
- 53:24I think it's on CrossFit to
- 53:26have a press release.
- 53:28that says we're having an
- 53:30unprecedented amount of
- 53:33penalties or scoring adjustments.
- 53:36Here are some of the reasons why.
- 53:37Yeah.
- 53:40Because right now, everybody's speculating,
- 53:42and they're making outlandish accusations,
- 53:45and we don't know if any of that's true.
- 53:47Yeah, we don't know anything.
- 53:50We don't know.
- 53:51Because, I mean,
- 53:51an athlete gets a penalty.
- 53:53The first thing that happens
- 53:54is they go radio silent.
- 53:57Do you remember the year
- 53:57that people miscounted the
- 54:00crossovers and then Boz
- 54:01went out on Instagram,
- 54:02did a video showing how to count, right?
- 54:07If they did a press release
- 54:08with a video that said this
- 54:10was the standard and it was
- 54:13missed because this body position,
- 54:15and that way you're not
- 54:16even calling out an athlete.
- 54:17You're just saying these are the reasons.
- 54:20Yeah.
- 54:22Yeah, I would like something like that.
- 54:25I would also personally like
- 54:27a real press conference
- 54:28when they do that.
- 54:30I want somebody up in front
- 54:32of the freaking podium or
- 54:34whatever you call it.
- 54:37Whoever's in charge,
- 54:38come tell us what's going on.
- 54:40If Dana White can suck it up and do it,
- 54:42so can you.
- 54:43So, love or hate Justin Berg,
- 54:46when he was in charge,
- 54:48there were quarterly press conferences.
- 54:50That is true.
- 54:53to take part in those we got
- 54:55to ask questions um they
- 54:58may have danced around an
- 54:59answer but at least you got
- 55:01to ask the question yeah
- 55:04since dave has taken back
- 55:06over the only press
- 55:08conferences are at the
- 55:09games and then I did they
- 55:12did have one at the west
- 55:15north america west last
- 55:16year oh did they I had no idea
- 55:19Yeah, Don Fall came in.
- 55:20Don and Dave did a press conference.
- 55:24Gotcha.
- 55:29Chelsea,
- 55:30I think that's what everybody
- 55:31wants to know.
- 55:32How egregious are the reps?
- 55:34We don't know.
- 55:35And what constitutes minor, major?
- 55:39Did soft knees get you the major?
- 55:42Did the shoulders get you a minor?
- 55:43Did...
- 55:45I can actually read that to you, I think.
- 55:47Hold on.
- 55:49I have the rule book open.
- 55:51Oh, it's in the appendix.
- 55:53Hold on.
- 55:54Well,
- 55:55I know the major for so many reps
- 55:57that are in question.
- 55:59But it's still even a little vague.
- 56:02Right.
- 56:03Which is kind of tough.
- 56:07You would think they would
- 56:09make that stuff at least
- 56:12relatively clear in the
- 56:16in the rule book.
- 56:17Right.
- 56:18Yeah.
- 56:19Yeah.
- 56:21What does it say?
- 56:21Penalties?
- 56:23I think it says like a minor
- 56:25penalty will be assessed if
- 56:27it's below some threshold.
- 56:30And then a major penalty is 15%.
- 56:32But even the minor penalty,
- 56:34I know it's like the way
- 56:35they calculate it is like
- 56:36the rep speed times two.
- 56:41It's so like,
- 56:42It used to be,
- 56:43it was like if it was five
- 56:44or less questionable reps,
- 56:46it was a minor.
- 56:47Right.
- 56:49If it was up to like 20 reps,
- 56:52it was a major.
- 56:53And then beyond that was rejected.
- 56:55Yeah.
- 56:57Well, and that's, I mean,
- 56:58we haven't seen anything
- 56:59close to a rejected video in a long time,
- 57:01but we're seeing at least
- 57:02things that look similar.
- 57:04900 spots.
- 57:05Yeah.
- 57:05Something got rejected.
- 57:06Exactly.
- 57:08yeah I'm sure he's not the
- 57:09only one too I'm sure
- 57:11there's some other people
- 57:11who have fallen really
- 57:13really far well homer fell
- 57:15500 spots yeah so that has
- 57:18to be if it's not a
- 57:20rejected video they're
- 57:21taking away all the reps of
- 57:24a movement right
- 57:27would be the only way I
- 57:28think you could have that
- 57:29kind of a fall off points
- 57:30wise or score wise on a
- 57:32workout like the intervals.
- 57:33Like if you did no step ups,
- 57:35like if they counted none
- 57:36of your step ups or none of
- 57:38your row calories for some reason.
- 57:42Yeah.
- 57:43Cause majors are supposed to
- 57:44be a percentage, right?
- 57:46Right.
- 57:47Yeah.
- 57:47It's 15%.
- 57:50Yeah.
- 57:50I don't,
- 57:51Be nice to know what their
- 57:53thinking was on this in
- 57:55some shape or form.
- 57:56Like, this is what a major was.
- 57:58This is why we did it.
- 58:00Here's a demo.
- 58:02That way you're not calling
- 58:03out the athlete,
- 58:04but you're showing the
- 58:04example of what was done
- 58:06and what wasn't done.
- 58:07Yeah,
- 58:08that would probably be a much better
- 58:09way to do it than put out
- 58:10the video publicly.
- 58:11I think I've just, as a coach,
- 58:12I'm just so curious to see
- 58:15Cause I'll put a video of my
- 58:17athlete going in a video of
- 58:18somebody who got penalized and look,
- 58:20try to see what the
- 58:21difference is between the two.
- 58:22Well,
- 58:25I'm all for like public submission of
- 58:26videos.
- 58:28Yeah.
- 58:29I just don't know if I like
- 58:31just the penalized being released.
- 58:34I agree with that.
- 58:35Yeah.
- 58:35A little bit unfair to those athletes.
- 58:38Yeah.
- 58:38I think if at the beginning
- 58:39you say you have to make
- 58:41all of your videos public on YouTube,
- 58:44I'm okay with that across the board.
- 58:47If you're a good mover,
- 58:47you should not even worry about that.
- 58:50Hiller would have so much content.
- 58:55Well,
- 58:56hopefully the standard would improve.
- 58:59That would be the hope, right?
- 59:01That would be the goal.
- 59:03Yeah.
- 59:05Well, yeah, it's wild times.
- 59:07We are up on the hour.
- 59:10So this was the first
- 59:12episode of hopefully many.
- 59:14Yeah.
- 59:15This was fun.
- 59:16Getting a coach's
- 59:17perspective on what's going
- 59:18on and who better than
- 59:21coach Krispy Kreme himself.
- 59:23I've got to get another shirt.
- 59:25So mad.
- 59:25I lost that shirt.
- 59:28Yeah.
- 59:29I'm just glad I was able to
- 59:30make a thumbnail that I
- 59:33could steal the logo.
- 59:35Yeah, for sure.
- 59:35Right.
- 59:37Yeah.
- 59:38Replace donut with a send athlete.
- 59:41Yeah, like the A. That would be good.
- 59:43Could do that.
- 59:44In the greens part where it says donut?
- 59:46Uh-huh.
- 59:47Does it say ascend?
- 59:48It says ascend.
- 59:49Oh, I didn't even notice that.
- 59:50No way.
- 59:51Yeah.
- 59:52On the thumbnail.
- 59:53Heck yeah.
- 59:57Oh, yeah, it does.
- 59:57That's awesome.
- 59:58That's sick.
- 1:00:01Yeah, this was fun.
- 1:00:02I would like to do this more.
- 1:00:03All right.
- 1:00:04Well, sounds good.
- 1:00:05And we will say everybody in the chat.
- 1:00:07You've been awesome.
- 1:00:08Yeah.
- 1:00:08Thanks guys.
- 1:00:09So much feedback.
- 1:00:10It makes the show go by really fast.
- 1:00:12You guys are always the best with that.
- 1:00:14We'll see everybody next
- 1:00:15time on chopping it up with
- 1:00:19coach Krispy Kreme.
- 1:00:21Here we go.
