- 0:02Speaker 1: This is a Bramble Jam podcast.
- 0:23Speaker 2: Welcome to Girls Gone Homework, a Homework of you podcast.
- 0:25Speaker 2: I'm Megan and I'm a longtime a Hallmark fan. Today
- 0:29Speaker 2: we are discussing The Chicken Sisters Season two, episode two,
- 0:33Speaker 2: Mama Tried, y'all, and I'm so lucky to be joined
- 0:36Speaker 2: by Dara Auston, host of the Dear Hallmark podcast.
- 0:40Speaker 1: Thank you for joining me, Thank.
- 0:41Speaker 3: You for having me. I'm so excited to be here.
- 0:45Speaker 3: It looks good, the food is good, the vibes are
- 0:47Speaker 3: good here. Thank you for inviting me. I love it.
- 0:50Speaker 2: This has been such a fun project. I mean, we're
- 0:52Speaker 2: only two episodes in, but it's been fun to get
- 0:54Speaker 2: to collaborate with other podcasters for this season of The
- 0:57Speaker 2: Chicken Sisters. You certainly celebrated five years of Dear Hallmark.
- 1:04Speaker 3: I did.
- 1:05Speaker 2: We're actually coming up on five years of Girls con
- 1:07Speaker 2: Hallmark congratulation.
- 1:09Speaker 1: Yeah you too.
- 1:10Speaker 2: I know you haven't asked me anything episode coming up.
- 1:14Speaker 2: I don't want to steal from that, but I want
- 1:15Speaker 2: to ask a real quick question, like what in the
- 1:18Speaker 2: five years have become your favorite types of movies to review?
- 1:22Speaker 3: Oh, that's a really good question. Sometimes, so I have
- 1:27Speaker 3: two answers to that. I would say sometimes I enjoy
- 1:30Speaker 3: reviewing the bad ones because then I can have fun.
- 1:32Speaker 1: With it, you know, sometimes it is.
- 1:36Speaker 3: But also I really enjoy like, if I'm really really
- 1:41Speaker 3: passionate about a movie, You're going to get a one quick,
- 1:45Speaker 3: like ten minute YouTube take and I'm just gonna pour
- 1:47Speaker 3: my heart out. Like I like those where I can
- 1:49Speaker 3: just pour my heart out because of how much I
- 1:51Speaker 3: love a movie. And normally those movies are like cooking movies,
- 1:55Speaker 3: and our destination movies and our literary movies, anything to
- 1:59Speaker 3: do with the book writing or publishing. Those are kind
- 2:02Speaker 3: of my jam and my jelly. M hm.
- 2:05Speaker 2: Now, you're such a fun interviewer. Do you like interviews
- 2:08Speaker 2: as much as reviews? Do you like the more?
- 2:12Speaker 3: So that's an interesting question as well, because last year
- 2:16Speaker 3: I felt like I was more interview heavy, and so
- 2:18Speaker 3: this year I kind of pulled back and I find
- 2:21Speaker 3: that I genuinely enjoy I think I enjoy reviewing more,
- 2:25Speaker 3: but I do like adding the conversations with different people,
- 2:30Speaker 3: whether actor, director, producer, or what have you. But I
- 2:34Speaker 3: think because this is how Dear Hallmark started in the
- 2:36Speaker 3: first place, my first love is reviewing the movies and
- 2:40Speaker 3: talking with people about the movies.
- 2:42Speaker 2: Before we get into the details of this episode, I
- 2:45Speaker 2: want to hear where you are with the Chicken Sisters insel.
- 2:50Speaker 2: Our hosts are coming at it from all different angles,
- 2:52Speaker 2: so I'm curious.
- 2:54Speaker 1: I kind of know the answer to this.
- 2:55Speaker 2: But our listeners, did you watch season one? Any thoughts
- 2:59Speaker 2: on that seat and if you did, how are you
- 3:01Speaker 2: feeling about a second season?
- 3:03Speaker 3: Yeah, so, y'all where my heart was. I watched the
- 3:07Speaker 3: first three episodes of the first season as it was
- 3:10Speaker 3: airing last year, and I tapped out after episode three.
- 3:15Speaker 3: I was just like, this might not be for me,
- 3:17Speaker 3: but it could be for somebody. And so with that,
- 3:21Speaker 3: I was shocked that it had a second season because I,
- 3:25Speaker 3: at least from the like the comments I've been able
- 3:29Speaker 3: to grab from the Facebook streets and the Instagram streets,
- 3:31Speaker 3: I didn't think anyone was really watching it or liked
- 3:34Speaker 3: it either. So I was shocked and they announced that
- 3:36Speaker 3: there would be a second season and it would still
- 3:38Speaker 3: come out this year. I was shocked about that, and
- 3:42Speaker 3: I don't want to spoil my thoughts on the episode,
- 3:44Speaker 3: but yeah, this episode was different for me. I'll just
- 3:47Speaker 3: leave it there.
- 3:49Speaker 1: Did you watch episode one.
- 3:51Speaker 3: I didn't, so I came in completely blind. I just
- 3:54Speaker 3: saw the recap at the beginning of the episode, I was.
- 3:56Speaker 2: Like, Okay, well, this is gonna be so fun. So
- 4:01Speaker 2: a quick synopsis of this episode, Amanda, Nancy, and guest
- 4:03Speaker 2: tried to mend fences following their ultimate Kitchen Clashed episodes
- 4:08Speaker 2: airing and may enlist Sabrina's help with her wedding planning.
- 4:12Speaker 2: And we always run down news and notes of these
- 4:14Speaker 2: episodes at the top. We're not going to run down everybody.
- 4:17Speaker 2: But for this episode, Carrie Karney was the head writer.
- 4:21Speaker 2: She was an actress and only has Chicken Sisters is
- 4:25Speaker 2: her only writing credit other than a short. She was
- 4:27Speaker 2: a staff writer on all eight episodes of the first season,
- 4:29Speaker 2: but is credited with as head writer of this episode.
- 4:33Speaker 2: I think we're leaning into I think we're leading into
- 4:36Speaker 2: comedy writers.
- 4:37Speaker 1: Here is my feeling.
- 4:38Speaker 3: I can feel that. I can feel that. I definitely
- 4:41Speaker 3: felt that with this episode.
- 4:43Speaker 2: One thing I noticed I was listening to a podcast
- 4:45Speaker 2: last week and one of the guests that were like,
- 4:47Speaker 2: he's a writer on The Chicken Sisters. And then of course,
- 4:49Speaker 2: as I'm watching this, I see his name in the credits.
- 4:51Speaker 2: It's mono agopian. He has a podcast of his own.
- 4:54Speaker 2: Hehosts a RuPaul's Drag Race Recap podcast, which I have
- 4:58Speaker 2: not listened to, but he was so funny on this
- 5:01Speaker 2: other podcast that now I'm like, I've never seen an
- 5:03Speaker 2: episode of RuPauls Draggrays and want to listen to his podcast.
- 5:06Speaker 2: So just a hint of where we're coming from with
- 5:08Speaker 2: these writers. Yeah, and Leah Thompson is back as director.
- 5:13Speaker 2: She directed episode one, she directed episode two. We don't
- 5:16Speaker 2: get a lot of information ahead of time, so I
- 5:18Speaker 2: don't know how many of f Yourdure episodes she's gonna direct.
- 5:21Speaker 3: But whoa, Yeah, that's really cool. Is this our first
- 5:25Speaker 3: time directing within the series.
- 5:27Speaker 1: Within this series yet?
- 5:28Speaker 3: Yeah?
- 5:29Speaker 2: She has quite a few other television directing credits. It's
- 5:31Speaker 2: definitely not her first thing. Yeah, she did not direct
- 5:34Speaker 2: last season.
- 5:35Speaker 3: Okay, Wow, that's cool. Lea Thompson is getting it between
- 5:39Speaker 3: this and Spencer Sisters like she's owning it. I love it.
- 5:43Speaker 2: Could we get a second season of Spencer Sisters?
- 5:45Speaker 3: That's all I want for Christmas? Yeah?
- 5:47Speaker 2: Right?
- 5:49Speaker 3: Then?
- 5:49Speaker 2: We have one new cast member, David James Elliott. He
- 5:52Speaker 2: plays Clayton Briggs, the third former high school quarterback and
- 5:54Speaker 2: of course May's daddy.
- 6:00Speaker 1: He has a deep resume.
- 6:01Speaker 2: He's obviously most well known for his appearance on two
- 6:03Speaker 2: hundred and twenty seven episodes of Jag over ten seasons.
- 6:06Speaker 1: Stara, is that a show you ever watched?
- 6:08Speaker 3: Yeah? I actually grew up watching Jack. My dad would
- 6:11Speaker 3: always have it on. So yes, interesting.
- 6:14Speaker 2: Yes, indeed, I've never seen an episode, but that's he
- 6:17Speaker 2: has a ton of credits, but that's what everybody references.
- 6:20Speaker 2: In the last episode, one of my wishes was for
- 6:23Speaker 2: our girl Gus to get a little love interest and
- 6:25Speaker 2: see him walking at the end. We'll talk about it
- 6:27Speaker 2: a little bit more happy to have him joining the
- 6:31Speaker 2: cat me too. We're gonna take a quick break and
- 6:34Speaker 2: we're gonna come right back with our first impressions. All right,
- 6:46Speaker 2: dar let's hear your first impression of Mama tried, y'all?
- 6:50Speaker 3: Okay? So, uh, my first impression I wrote, give me
- 6:56Speaker 3: a caesar salad and some fries because I might be
- 6:58Speaker 3: here longer than I thought.
- 7:01Speaker 2: So first of all, a caesar salad and prize is
- 7:05Speaker 2: the perfect.
- 7:05Speaker 3: Meal, quintessential meal, if I do say so myself. Chicken
- 7:09Speaker 3: seas it, shrimp sees it. If I'm feeling fancy, oh
- 7:12Speaker 3: look at you.
- 7:13Speaker 2: Yeah, but I feel like maybe you're coming around.
- 7:17Speaker 1: On the chicken sisters.
- 7:19Speaker 3: Listen. That's what this episode did to me. I was
- 7:21Speaker 3: shocked and my petty behind was forcing myself to not
- 7:25Speaker 3: like it. And it was just like, no, girl, lean in,
- 7:27Speaker 3: lean in, that's right, melt that heart, melt it. Let
- 7:30Speaker 3: it melt your heart, and it showed it definitely did.
- 7:33Speaker 3: I adored this episode. I was cracking up so much
- 7:38Speaker 3: with our guy from the Cluckery. I didn't catch his name.
- 7:41Speaker 2: Christian Christio gives real strong like uh like alpha mantic podcaster, Yeah,
- 7:49Speaker 2: red pill like that whole thing, which was just hilarious
- 7:53Speaker 2: to me and for me, Like I just I enjoyed
- 7:57Speaker 2: this whole episode and I felt like I felt like
- 8:00Speaker 2: I was on vacation in a way, which was weird.
- 8:03Speaker 3: Like I can't quite put it into words, but this
- 8:07Speaker 3: it was something about the pacing of this episode that
- 8:10Speaker 3: that really made me happy, Like I really enjoyed watching
- 8:13Speaker 3: this episode.
- 8:14Speaker 2: Well that's one of my few questions to come up.
- 8:16Speaker 1: So I'm glad you said that.
- 8:18Speaker 2: You know the reason why I'm doing this this season
- 8:21Speaker 2: with co host is because our listeners know Wendy was
- 8:24Speaker 2: not a fan of the first season, and when the
- 8:26Speaker 2: second season came around, she was like, I don't know
- 8:28Speaker 2: if I can do it, and I said, I have
- 8:29Speaker 2: an idea and let's see how it goes. So interestingly enough,
- 8:33Speaker 2: she has watched the first two episodes and after the
- 8:35Speaker 2: first one she was like, it's better. It's better, so
- 8:39Speaker 2: you're not alone and feeling like the vibes are better.
- 8:42Speaker 2: We have a brand new showrunner this season, and I
- 8:44Speaker 2: don't know how much influence there is there.
- 8:46Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 8:47Speaker 2: My first impression is feels a little bit like Shawna
- 8:49Speaker 2: is quickly becoming the third Chicken System.
- 8:52Speaker 3: Okay, okay, I don't want to jump ahead of you,
- 8:55Speaker 3: but yes, yes, yes, now, yes she.
- 8:59Speaker 2: Was in season one and of course, but she the
- 9:02Speaker 2: first two episodes of this season. I mean, it has
- 9:03Speaker 2: been Shawna heavy and I'm here for I'm the biggest
- 9:06Speaker 2: fan of cam Howden, the actress too replace her, Like yeah,
- 9:09Speaker 2: to the point that she's she saw some posts and
- 9:11Speaker 2: she shared them, but I'm like, okay, Megan, pull.
- 9:13Speaker 1: It back, like, but she's so good. She's such a
- 9:19Speaker 1: great as to the show.
- 9:21Speaker 3: Yes she is, Yes she is.
- 9:23Speaker 1: Let's talk what you liked about this episode.
- 9:26Speaker 3: Okay, I have I have a lot of Billet points.
- 9:28Speaker 3: I had to and it didn't take me long to
- 9:30Speaker 3: put this in. But like again, the pacing of the
- 9:33Speaker 3: show was it was like a slow drink of lemonade
- 9:37Speaker 3: for me. It was refreshing, it was sweet, it was
- 9:41Speaker 3: kind to me, and I appreciated it.
- 9:43Speaker 1: I love it.
- 9:44Speaker 3: And then you mentioned Shawna. She's one of my favorite
- 9:47Speaker 3: aspects of this episode. And also seeing Sabrina and May
- 9:52Speaker 3: interact with each other the way they were, with Sabrina
- 9:55Speaker 3: helping May plan her wedding and May just kind of
- 9:58Speaker 3: like glitching and she's like, I could do everything else,
- 10:02Speaker 3: but planning a wedding, I just like I go blank.
- 10:06Speaker 3: And so just watching Sabrina help her in that way.
- 10:10Speaker 3: And it's odd because I, like, I still had a
- 10:13Speaker 3: little bit of residual distrust of Sabrina from what I
- 10:17Speaker 3: saw from season one, but this episode swept that right away.
- 10:21Speaker 3: I was like, well, look at Sabrina just being just
- 10:24Speaker 3: a beautiful friend to May. And then again, the guy
- 10:28Speaker 3: from the Cluckery, like he he brought it and the
- 10:32Speaker 3: whole masculinity coach thing, and like that whole scene between
- 10:37Speaker 3: him and Frank Junior about like I was, I was howling,
- 10:42Speaker 3: like I was hollering. It was that was my problem.
- 10:44Speaker 3: My favorite part of the episode.
- 10:46Speaker 2: Yeah, no emotions, Clauset, yes, Oh my gosh, and him
- 10:50Speaker 2: just like on his shoulder or whatever, He's like take
- 10:53Speaker 2: the day.
- 10:54Speaker 3: It was so funny, so so so funny.
- 10:57Speaker 2: A few things I liked. Look, we're seeing Amanda coming
- 11:00Speaker 2: into her own. This is a takes you know. I
- 11:03Speaker 2: did watch all the first season, and it's just hard
- 11:06Speaker 2: to watch. She's really bogged down by Frank Junior and
- 11:10Speaker 2: she's living the life that other people wanted for her.
- 11:14Speaker 2: We see in the flashbacks that she had her light
- 11:16Speaker 2: dimmed and it's very literal the way it's shot by
- 11:19Speaker 2: Frank Junior, with the lighting and the literal dimming and
- 11:23Speaker 2: darkening of the scenes. He squashed her creativity. And then
- 11:26Speaker 2: we see her come back to life when Frankie is born,
- 11:28Speaker 2: and I like how they bring it back around. Frankie's
- 11:31Speaker 2: about to move on to the next step, and she's
- 11:33Speaker 2: the one who's encouraging her to find herself again, find
- 11:36Speaker 2: her creativity, and the things that she loves. My girl,
- 11:41Speaker 2: Nancy is a little frustrating, but I loved that when
- 11:46Speaker 2: she finally apologizes to Frank Junior, She's like, you have
- 11:51Speaker 2: some ownership to take here too. Of course he takes none,
- 11:54Speaker 2: because Frank Junior is the worst, literal worst, But I
- 12:00Speaker 2: appreciated Nancy in that moment. Yeah, a couple funny moments.
- 12:05Speaker 2: I liked May telling a man that she can't move
- 12:07Speaker 2: because she's been barring a lot of her clothes and
- 12:09Speaker 2: long jean skirts have really grown on me. I also
- 12:14Speaker 2: loved Seanna's funeral flowers and her continued love for Bodice rippers.
- 12:19Speaker 1: I love it.
- 12:21Speaker 3: Those two things told me all I needed to know
- 12:23Speaker 3: a watch Seana literally as someone who doesn't have much
- 12:26Speaker 3: experience with her her bringing in the Flower, the Flower Arrangement,
- 12:30Speaker 3: and then the novel. I was like, Oh, I'm here
- 12:33Speaker 3: to say, I'm here to say, like, that's my girl,
- 12:35Speaker 3: that's it.
- 12:36Speaker 2: Were you a Gilmore Girls fan bine each year?
- 12:38Speaker 3: Okay, fun fact, I just started watching Gilmore Girls last
- 12:42Speaker 3: fall and then brought it into this winter and season six,
- 12:46Speaker 3: episode two I had to tap out because Rory was
- 12:48Speaker 3: getting on my nerves.
- 12:49Speaker 2: Oh yeah, Rory has a rough time in there is
- 12:53Speaker 2: this yeah.
- 12:54Speaker 1: Dropping out of Yale Roryler.
- 12:56Speaker 3: Yes, like when right when they got arrested for the
- 13:00Speaker 3: boat thing and then she ends up living with her grandparents.
- 13:03Speaker 3: I screamed at the TV, and so I've boycotted it
- 13:06Speaker 3: since the winter, but I'm going to pick it back
- 13:08Speaker 3: up in the fall finishing.
- 13:10Speaker 2: I will say that is that is infuriating. It's so frustrating,
- 13:14Speaker 2: but it does have payoffs. The reason I ask is,
- 13:17Speaker 2: to me, Shauna is Kirk. She's and she runs all
- 13:25Speaker 2: these different businesses. She's in everybody's business. She's kind of
- 13:28Speaker 2: she's here, she's there, she's everywhere. So she's kind of the.
- 13:31Speaker 3: Interesting Okay, I didn't know her to have, but that
- 13:35Speaker 3: I guess in season one do we see that a
- 13:37Speaker 3: lot of her that she okay, Okay, that's good to
- 13:40Speaker 3: know because honestly, if we're talking Gilmore girls without that
- 13:44Speaker 3: prior knowledge of Shauna from season one, she was giving
- 13:47Speaker 3: me back, not bad back. Who's our is it? Miss
- 13:50Speaker 3: Patty teacher dance teacher? Yes, that's the vibe she was given.
- 13:53Speaker 3: She was.
- 13:54Speaker 2: Yeah, I think that's accurate too. But you know, for
- 13:57Speaker 2: anybody who didn't see season one. Yeah, frank Junior sabotages,
- 14:01Speaker 2: he takes off with the winnings. Shauna comes in and
- 14:05Speaker 2: she's like, y'all, I'm rich, I have sixteen jobs. And
- 14:08Speaker 2: she then franchises the Chicken Sisters because Gus's business is
- 14:13Speaker 2: in severe debt and so she comes and saves them,
- 14:16Speaker 2: which is why she's kind of stepped up in importance
- 14:19Speaker 2: because she basically owns these restaurants and she's a partner
- 14:23Speaker 2: with them.
- 14:23Speaker 1: Okay, so it all comes together. Let's look what you
- 14:27Speaker 1: wished for in this episode.
- 14:29Speaker 3: So I only have one wish. My only wish was
- 14:36Speaker 3: and this is kind of across the board with different
- 14:38Speaker 3: shows and movies, but the way the daughter Frankie talked
- 14:42Speaker 3: to Amanda, I just that just hurt me, and I
- 14:46Speaker 3: know she was hurt and embarrassed too. But I just
- 14:50Speaker 3: wish that we were able to talk to our mom
- 14:52Speaker 3: in a more delicate way than what we did. That
- 14:55Speaker 3: was my only wish.
- 14:56Speaker 2: Interesting, Yeah, interesting, Okay. One of my wishes is a
- 15:02Speaker 2: question to you, because with such an ensemble cast in
- 15:06Speaker 2: this show, how are you feeling about the little snippets
- 15:11Speaker 2: for getting? Because in this episode, we've got a big
- 15:14Speaker 2: focus on Amanda, little shots of Nancy with the past,
- 15:17Speaker 2: or a little bit of Lindsey and Frankie. Does it
- 15:19Speaker 2: feel cohesive enough? Or are we we're getting too little
- 15:23Speaker 2: of those other storylines in this episode.
- 15:27Speaker 3: Honestly, I'm okay with what we're getting because I see
- 15:31Speaker 3: it as that's something that they'll probably expound on in
- 15:34Speaker 3: later episodes. So it didn't bother me, like it didn't
- 15:37Speaker 3: feel it didn't. I didn't sense a lack of cohesiveness
- 15:42Speaker 3: for me with this episode. But is that is that
- 15:45Speaker 3: kind of how you felt?
- 15:46Speaker 2: No, it wasn't because so the first episode was very
- 15:50Speaker 2: fast paced and the way they were catching catching us
- 15:53Speaker 2: up and bringing all the characters up to date with everybody,
- 15:56Speaker 2: and I love that. Going back to Gilmore Girls, I
- 16:00Speaker 2: love that fast pace, like give me the dialogue.
- 16:02Speaker 1: Move it along. I like that.
- 16:04Speaker 2: And I was worried because last year I felt like
- 16:07Speaker 2: the pilot episode was like that and then it slowed
- 16:10Speaker 2: way down and we dug into these storylines. I felt
- 16:14Speaker 2: like this episode kept up that pace.
- 16:16Speaker 3: Okay.
- 16:17Speaker 2: I was just wondering, as someone who's maybe not as
- 16:20Speaker 2: entrenched in the world of Marynac, is it not enough?
- 16:24Speaker 2: But Yeah, we are going to get more of Lindsay
- 16:26Speaker 2: and Frankie.
- 16:27Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 16:28Speaker 2: Question, are you feeling any romantic vibes there?
- 16:34Speaker 3: Okay, so I was getting that in the first season.
- 16:38Speaker 3: I thought that they were setting that up in the
- 16:40Speaker 3: first season. So, but who's Who's is his name Dudley? Who?
- 16:45Speaker 3: So who's he? Like? Who's he supposed to be?
- 16:48Speaker 2: He's Frankie's dud of a boyfriend. He shows up in
- 16:53Speaker 2: the first episode and Lindsay's like, who are you. He's like,
- 16:57Speaker 2: I'm Frankie's boyfriend, and just to look on her face.
- 17:00Speaker 2: And then in this episode when he shows up at
- 17:02Speaker 2: the movies and Frankie leaves with him, and then you know,
- 17:05Speaker 2: Lindsay goes home, She's like, I want to go home.
- 17:07Speaker 3: That makes sense now because I'm like, what I'm like
- 17:10Speaker 3: is she's just sick of the town. But as you're talking,
- 17:12Speaker 3: that's why I'm like, Okay, that's why she was. She
- 17:15Speaker 3: just like kind of crashed out a little bit because
- 17:18Speaker 3: she has this kind of longing for Frankie. Yeah, I've
- 17:21Speaker 3: thought about that.
- 17:23Speaker 2: Yeah, I'm hoping we see that come to fruition this season.
- 17:27Speaker 2: I am curious your take on gus So last episode,
- 17:31Speaker 2: I felt like we started to see a little.
- 17:33Speaker 1: Bit of a softer side of Gus. Yes, my co host.
- 17:36Speaker 2: Brian Harold said he didn't love that. He felt like
- 17:39Speaker 2: that wasn't true to who she was and it was
- 17:42Speaker 2: setting us up for some not really for her character
- 17:47Speaker 2: to not make sense later in the season.
- 17:51Speaker 1: I stand by it.
- 17:52Speaker 2: We see a lot of peaks of her softer side
- 17:54Speaker 2: in this episode. Yeah, you know, she even gets teary
- 17:58Speaker 2: eyed when people are making fun of her, supportive of
- 18:01Speaker 2: Amanda in a way you never would have seen in seasons.
- 18:04Speaker 3: That's true.
- 18:04Speaker 2: She goes along with Shawna's plan. How what do you
- 18:07Speaker 2: think about Gus as we see her now?
- 18:10Speaker 3: I enjoyed Gus in this episode because it felt like
- 18:14Speaker 3: she was doing at least going along. I'm thinking specifically
- 18:18Speaker 3: about doing that bit at the end with Shauna with
- 18:21Speaker 3: the season salad thing. I felt like she was doing it,
- 18:23Speaker 3: but begrudgingly, Like even when she said hi, I'm Gus
- 18:26Speaker 3: and no, I'm a Chuck consists it like, I felt
- 18:28Speaker 3: like she was doing it begrudgingly, but because she she
- 18:33Speaker 3: is listening to Shawna and respecting Shawna's you know, opinion,
- 18:37Speaker 3: she obliges. But I enjoyed Gus, I really do. And
- 18:42Speaker 3: I think Wendy Malax she's I love her, and I
- 18:46Speaker 3: think she does such a good job of kind of
- 18:48Speaker 3: that balance of like having that heard exterior but still
- 18:52Speaker 3: being able to show a softer side of Sharman. And
- 18:55Speaker 3: so I'm I'm enjoying the push pool. I think I
- 19:00Speaker 3: wrote in my notes, I was like, it's springing Narnia
- 19:02Speaker 3: again because because of just how yeah, how warm. For
- 19:11Speaker 3: lack of a better word, I felt like Gus was
- 19:13Speaker 3: in this episode and I liked it.
- 19:17Speaker 1: Do you watch the show Shrinking?
- 19:19Speaker 3: No, but I've heard of it.
- 19:20Speaker 2: I recommend it. Wendy Malick is in it. She's frea
- 19:24Speaker 2: fantastic also created by the creator of The Chicken Sisters,
- 19:28Speaker 2: Annie m Vain.
- 19:29Speaker 3: Oh wow.
- 19:30Speaker 1: But it is.
- 19:32Speaker 2: The best thing on television right now. I mean, season
- 19:36Speaker 2: three is coming up, so we're not actively in a season,
- 19:38Speaker 2: but it is one of the best shows.
- 19:40Speaker 1: I've ever seen.
- 19:40Speaker 3: Which streamer is it on.
- 19:41Speaker 2: It's on Apple TV Plus, which is frustrating because I
- 19:44Speaker 2: feel like it's not one that a.
- 19:45Speaker 1: Lot of people have.
- 19:46Speaker 3: That's true, I am one of those people.
- 19:48Speaker 2: Yes, but it's worth like a one month because it's
- 19:54Speaker 2: only ten episodes in a season, so you can kind
- 19:56Speaker 2: of get through.
- 19:57Speaker 1: Okay, it's great.
- 19:57Speaker 2: I think it's great. I have one more and it that.
- 20:00Speaker 2: While I think it's a great storyline for Sabrina to
- 20:03Speaker 2: help May plan the wedding, it's how we give Sabrina
- 20:06Speaker 2: something to do while she's back in town.
- 20:10Speaker 1: I don't fully buy.
- 20:11Speaker 2: That May is this checked out of the process, even
- 20:14Speaker 2: with the explanation that she is used to not seeing
- 20:18Speaker 2: marriages last I just feel like May, who she was
- 20:22Speaker 2: as a person, is not lining up with this. Like
- 20:26Speaker 2: I can't plan my own wedding. It's three weeks away
- 20:28Speaker 2: and I don't have a dress.
- 20:29Speaker 3: I mean, that's fair, No, that's fair.
- 20:33Speaker 2: At least it got us Sabrina back, which was one
- 20:35Speaker 2: of our biggest wishes at the end of last season
- 20:36Speaker 2: because Brute to love her. Rookie Bernard is one of
- 20:39Speaker 2: my favorites, one of her best roles.
- 20:43Speaker 1: She's so good. Yeah, and so I'm glad it brought
- 20:45Speaker 1: her back.
- 20:46Speaker 2: But we'll see, we'll see.
- 20:49Speaker 3: Okay that I mean, because she has been, at least
- 20:53Speaker 3: from what I saw previously, like she has been made
- 20:56Speaker 3: to be this very kind of like type a tie
- 21:00Speaker 3: type of person. So to think that when it comes
- 21:03Speaker 3: to something as so so big as your wedding for
- 21:07Speaker 3: her to not have done anything, yeah, or does that.
- 21:10Speaker 2: Of an organizing television show?
- 21:12Speaker 3: Now question? Because I know her and her fiance had
- 21:16Speaker 3: at least to mine from what I gathered, was she
- 21:19Speaker 3: having an issue committing to him? Like, do you think
- 21:22Speaker 3: that that's like something deeper? Is her not planning it?
- 21:25Speaker 3: Is her not kind of wanting to commit to him.
- 21:28Speaker 2: I think the issue was that he didn't know the
- 21:31Speaker 2: truth about her past, about she was from. She hadn't
- 21:34Speaker 2: told him that and he doesn't find out until the
- 21:37Speaker 2: eighth episode of season one.
- 21:39Speaker 1: But I think she was a little nervous.
- 21:40Speaker 2: About planning a wedding, and in season one when they
- 21:43Speaker 2: were engaged in trying to figure out how am I
- 21:46Speaker 2: going to do this and keep up this facade of
- 21:48Speaker 2: who he thinks I am? And of course he finds
- 21:51Speaker 2: out and he's like, I love you for you, not
- 21:53Speaker 2: the idea that you presented as some you know, New
- 21:57Speaker 2: York City girl. So I think she's all in on
- 22:01Speaker 2: the relationship, especially now Okay, it's all out there and.
- 22:05Speaker 3: I just found out he's magnets from Providence Falls. Yes,
- 22:08Speaker 3: did not make the connection. I said, play the role, brother,
- 22:12Speaker 3: play the role. He did such a good.
- 22:14Speaker 1: Job, so good. Oh, I could talk about Providence today.
- 22:18Speaker 3: You and me both girl.
- 22:19Speaker 2: People are talking or dogging on that show. I'm like,
- 22:22Speaker 2: excuse me, we need to have a conversation.
- 22:24Speaker 3: Absolutely, step into our office. We have office hours whenever
- 22:28Speaker 3: you need.
- 22:30Speaker 2: Well, let's talk. Any did you see that moments that
- 22:33Speaker 2: you've came across in this episode.
- 22:35Speaker 3: I only have one, and it's it's more so than
- 22:38Speaker 3: I just want to highlight this, this part when Gus
- 22:42Speaker 3: is filming the actual Caesar salad video, her blazer is
- 22:47Speaker 3: just I sent my compliments to the chef that blazer
- 22:51Speaker 3: was just as delicious as that Caesar salad looked. And
- 22:54Speaker 3: I just need y'all to just give just give a
- 22:57Speaker 3: hearty her heart to the costumer for that choice.
- 23:01Speaker 2: Yeah, that whole look, right, we get that look where
- 23:04Speaker 2: she looks ridiculous and whatever. Nancy has her usure in,
- 23:08Speaker 2: and so you kind of assume she's just gonna be gussed,
- 23:10Speaker 2: she's just gonna wear her normal gut and when she
- 23:12Speaker 2: comes in, she's still dust.
- 23:14Speaker 1: She's dust. Two point oh, it's so good.
- 23:18Speaker 2: The straight jeans and the blazer.
- 23:20Speaker 1: I loved it, and I love her shorter haircut.
- 23:23Speaker 3: Yes, it was perfect, perfect.
- 23:27Speaker 1: So good.
- 23:28Speaker 2: I again have kind of just moments that I want
- 23:30Speaker 2: to highlight. One is really about me. It's Amanda saying
- 23:35Speaker 2: to Frankie, I don't know who I'm going to be
- 23:38Speaker 2: when you leave talking about Frankie in college. I can't
- 23:40Speaker 2: stop talking about the fact that I dropped my kid
- 23:42Speaker 2: off at college last week. And so I'm like, bury
- 23:44Speaker 2: in that.
- 23:46Speaker 3: First of all, congratulations because that is a big feet
- 23:49Speaker 3: in and of itself. I know.
- 23:50Speaker 1: Wendy was like, hey, he's launched.
- 23:52Speaker 2: I was like, it's a transition period.
- 23:58Speaker 1: She said that I thought, I see you a man.
- 24:00Speaker 3: That. Yeah.
- 24:01Speaker 1: I want to throw it back to a question we
- 24:02Speaker 1: had last week in the episode, because.
- 24:06Speaker 2: To me, the logistics of the two Chicken restaurants are
- 24:08Speaker 2: a little bit confusing because they're both the Chicken Sisters,
- 24:11Speaker 2: but we maintain these two locations because it's a franchise.
- 24:15Speaker 2: But we were like, Brian especially, was like, which recipe
- 24:18Speaker 2: are they using? How are they doing this well? It
- 24:20Speaker 2: seems to me, based on a common August mate, that
- 24:22Speaker 2: they're continuing to use their own recipes, which is weird
- 24:27Speaker 2: for a franchise, Like you think there needed to be
- 24:28Speaker 2: some continuity, but you know, nothing makes sense in this town.
- 24:33Speaker 2: And I mentioned it a little earlier, but I just
- 24:35Speaker 2: really love the use of lighting in this shows. It's
- 24:38Speaker 2: really well in flashbacks when we talk about Amanda's trajectory
- 24:41Speaker 2: and the Cluckery is lit in dim, cold blue lighting. Yeah,
- 24:48Speaker 2: I mean that place is devoid of life. It's really good.
- 24:52Speaker 3: You know what. It reminded me of good Burger when
- 24:56Speaker 3: the like how the contrast. It's the old nineties Nickelodeon
- 24:59Speaker 3: movie with Kel Mitchell. It was like a Kennan and
- 25:01Speaker 3: Kel movie, Uh huh, And they had a competing burger
- 25:05Speaker 3: restaurant called Mando Burger or something like that, and just
- 25:08Speaker 3: the contrast between like the warmth of that restaurant and
- 25:11Speaker 3: then the darkness of that, and I think theirs was
- 25:15Speaker 3: like overexposed so much that it felt unreal. This reminded
- 25:19Speaker 3: me of that, like what you were saying, in terms
- 25:21Speaker 3: of how they purposefully shot it, it feels abandoned, neglected,
- 25:26Speaker 3: like like so, yeah, I thought the way they lit that,
- 25:30Speaker 3: you could you could feel that it felt like you
- 25:32Speaker 3: were inside of a refrigerator and not a restaurant.
- 25:35Speaker 1: Yes, for sure.
- 25:36Speaker 2: So we have a segment we're including in these episodes
- 25:38Speaker 2: because most of our hosts are not Chicken Sister loyalists.
- 25:44Speaker 1: I think that pertains to you.
- 25:45Speaker 2: So this segment is called fresh Eyes, and this is
- 25:48Speaker 2: just for those who are new. What questions thoughts do
- 25:51Speaker 2: you have? What's not making sense?
- 25:54Speaker 3: What was the how did it? Because it seem like
- 25:57Speaker 3: Gus and Nancy are on good terms now, Oh what
- 26:00Speaker 3: brought them back to good terms?
- 26:02Speaker 2: Well, that's actually a great question because I think it's
- 26:05Speaker 2: we're seeing it again. So in season one, we know
- 26:10Speaker 2: that there was some rift between Franny's and Mimi's back
- 26:13Speaker 2: in the day that led to the split of these
- 26:15Speaker 2: two restaurants. Originally was the Chicken Sisters they split into
- 26:20Speaker 2: two restaurants. Well, come to find out, nothing ever happened,
- 26:24Speaker 2: except that the men in their lives perpetuated these rumors
- 26:30Speaker 2: to make them hate each other, to exert power over
- 26:33Speaker 2: each other.
- 26:35Speaker 1: So like at one.
- 26:35Speaker 2: Point it was believed that Gus had had an affair
- 26:38Speaker 2: with Frank Senior, and that never happened, but Frank Senior
- 26:42Speaker 2: allowed Nancy to believe it because it gave him power
- 26:46Speaker 2: over her. I think it comes back because in the
- 26:50Speaker 2: first episode I was like, what's Frank Junior's play here?
- 26:53Speaker 2: Why isn't he signing the divorce papers? And it's because
- 26:56Speaker 2: that's the only card he holds, yea only power he has.
- 27:01Speaker 2: So the men in the series are all trash exerting yes, yes,
- 27:08Speaker 2: and all about exerting power over the women in their lives.
- 27:11Speaker 3: Except for Sergio. I'm very very curious, like what his
- 27:18Speaker 3: how they're going to play with his character throughout this
- 27:21Speaker 3: season this he has the biggest he's the biggest wildcard
- 27:25Speaker 3: to me in all of this.
- 27:26Speaker 2: Uh huh, yeah, that's real interesting. He was very funny.
- 27:30Speaker 2: He only had a couple scenes in this episode, but
- 27:31Speaker 2: was very funny and thrown off.
- 27:33Speaker 1: The entire time.
- 27:35Speaker 2: And that text he gets from that do not that's
- 27:38Speaker 2: his ex that do not answer number. We learn about
- 27:40Speaker 2: her in season one. We don't know what's going on
- 27:43Speaker 2: with her, but that's who's colin.
- 27:45Speaker 1: Have we seen Harley?
- 27:46Speaker 3: Do we know what she looks like?
- 27:47Speaker 1: We have not.
- 27:49Speaker 3: Oh it's like Mary's from Frasier, like because she's just
- 27:53Speaker 3: it's like pritty. Okay, that's interesting, Okay.
- 27:57Speaker 2: Well it's time to name our feathered friend of the week.
- 28:00Speaker 2: Who was the MVP of the episode for you?
- 28:02Speaker 3: Oh, Shana hands down, hands to feet like it's Shanna.
- 28:07Speaker 3: She again, the Bodice Rippers, the flower arrangement. She goes
- 28:11Speaker 3: in and commits corporate espionage, which I love, like her whole.
- 28:16Speaker 3: I like she. She is it for me and she
- 28:19Speaker 3: she will always forever be my queen for this.
- 28:23Speaker 2: You know, Shauna was my feathered friend and I even
- 28:25Speaker 2: put in my notes I'm tempted to go with Shauna
- 28:27Speaker 2: because she is here, there, and everywhere, but I did
- 28:30Speaker 2: choose a different person. I went with Frankie, and I
- 28:33Speaker 2: think you're gonna disagree because I actually was, for lack
- 28:38Speaker 2: of a better word, proud of her when she expressed
- 28:41Speaker 2: to her mom why she was so hurt, when she
- 28:44Speaker 2: was able to explain, you know, what was going on.
- 28:49Speaker 2: I do think those were hurtful words and hard to hear,
- 28:51Speaker 2: but yeah, you know, she's a teenager and going through
- 28:55Speaker 2: big feelings. Yeah, I wondered, like, are they teenagers entitled
- 29:01Speaker 2: to know what's going on as a marriage is splitting out?
- 29:05Speaker 2: Like how does where's the line there? Because yeah, because
- 29:08Speaker 2: I'm not sure, you bring you'd loop them in until
- 29:10Speaker 2: a decision.
- 29:11Speaker 3: Is right and made right.
- 29:12Speaker 2: But I did appreciate her expressing herself and then showing
- 29:16Speaker 2: her mom a little grace.
- 29:18Speaker 3: Yeah. I do think even though maybe the delivery was
- 29:21Speaker 3: a bit much for me, I do think like the
- 29:23Speaker 3: nature of her words that that was a big step
- 29:26Speaker 3: in and of itself of being that vulnerable and that
- 29:28Speaker 3: honest and then for her mom to kind of meet
- 29:31Speaker 3: her where she was. And I thought Amanda's response too,
- 29:34Speaker 3: she was like, well, what you know, what can I do?
- 29:37Speaker 3: Like I I causes But I love that she even
- 29:39Speaker 3: came into the room and was just like, I'm just
- 29:41Speaker 3: going to sit here. I'm just going to sit here
- 29:43Speaker 3: because I just want to be with you Like that
- 29:44Speaker 3: was that was a heartwarming moment for me.
- 29:47Speaker 2: Yeah. I really liked that too. You don't have to
- 29:49Speaker 2: say anything, but I just want to be in your presence.
- 29:52Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 29:53Speaker 2: Yeah, Well, thank you so much for joining us.
- 29:58Speaker 1: This was so fun.
