- 0:46Speaker 1: State Gets the win against New Mexico State, but it
- 0:50Speaker 1: just felt very concerning. And I'm sure Florida State fans
- 0:53Speaker 1: feel exactly the same way. I so wish T.J. Pittenger
- 0:56Speaker 1: was with us to really dive into this thing. But
- 0:59Speaker 1: first glance, this was more of a struggle, especially in
- 1:02Speaker 1: the first half, than it really should have been for
- 1:05Speaker 1: Florida State. The running game was there, but it just
- 1:10Speaker 1: could have been better. Ashton Daniels was.
- 1:14Speaker 1: And I think that's indicative of the entire quarterback search
- 1:17Speaker 1: that they had this past offseason. It just left you wanting,
- 1:22Speaker 1: and for competition the caliber of New Mexico State, no
- 1:25Speaker 1: disrespect there, Florida State should have looked more impressive in
- 1:29Speaker 1: this game. So what was your thought?
- 1:31Speaker 3: Don't let the score fool you.
- 1:32Speaker 4: This was a disaster, dumpster fire, sign that times are
- 1:37Speaker 4: going to be changing this offseason in Tallahassee.
- 1:40Speaker 3: That's what it was.
- 1:41Speaker 4: There was a play in the third quarter where you
- 1:43Speaker 4: were down by 10, where you had a running back
- 1:46Speaker 4: trying to hit a wide receiver. And by the way,
- 1:50Speaker 4: throw was perfect. Nobody was around him. He just dropped
- 1:54Speaker 4: at the back of the end zone. I mean, like,
- 1:55Speaker 4: that's the level of ineptitude that we saw yesterday from
- 2:00Speaker 4: a Florida State team that, while there weren't a lot
- 2:02Speaker 4: of expectations going into the season, you didn't expect it
- 2:05Speaker 4: to look that bad. There were terrible reads by Ashton Daniels.
- 2:09Speaker 4: There were some really good reads throughout the night, but
- 2:10Speaker 4: there were some really bad ones. There were some horrible
- 2:13Speaker 4: blocking performances and setups by the offensive line throughout the
- 2:16Speaker 4: night to not really give Mike Norvell an opportunity to
- 2:18Speaker 4: get his play calling going. It took forever for you
- 2:21Speaker 4: to find a secondary receiver. Eventually, you were able to
- 2:24Speaker 4: get there. Samuel Singleton had the four catches and the
- 2:28Speaker 4: big touchdown reception. But every moment, I just felt like, oh,
- 2:33Speaker 4: this is starting to look a little bit better. Oh,
- 2:35Speaker 4: this is starting to look a little bit more like
- 2:37Speaker 4: what we expected. Now, again, expected was maybe 7-5, maybe
- 2:40Speaker 4: 8-4 if things go our way.
- 2:42Speaker 3: And then.
- 2:45Speaker 4: Just as soon as he said that, it's like the
- 2:47Speaker 4: ugly karma rears its head around and goes, yeah, bro, no, no, no, no, no.
- 2:52Speaker 4: You're Florida State. This is Mike Garvelle. We can't let
- 2:55Speaker 4: you have nice things. And so immediately, bad opportunities, bad opportunities,
- 2:59Speaker 4: horrendous execution, terrible open field tackling, defensively just looking lackluster
- 3:05Speaker 4: at times. And I think the part that was so
- 3:07Speaker 4: frustrating is if this was a performance– against an ACC team,
- 3:12Speaker 4: even a bottom-dwelling ACC team, but you still win by
- 3:15Speaker 4: double digits, you'll take that because of at least it's
- 3:17Speaker 4: a conference win.
- 3:18Speaker 3: You'll take that because of at least it keeps you.
- 3:20Speaker 4: In the running for maybe going to Charlotte. It's not pretty,
- 3:23Speaker 4: but at least you have that chance. But this wasn't
- 3:26Speaker 4: a pit. This wasn't an NC State. This wasn't a Virginia.
- 3:31Speaker 4: This was an underwhelming Conference USA New Mexico State team
- 3:36Speaker 4: that you allowed to outthrow you, get more explosive plays,
- 3:41Speaker 4: and I think at times look more consistent and more
- 3:43Speaker 4: physical in the areas that you needed to improve upon.
- 3:47Speaker 4: And so, yeah, 34-17 is a promising result on paper,
- 3:53Speaker 4: but my God, the execution of it throughout the entire night.
- 3:57Speaker 3: Brother, it's bad.
- 3:59Speaker 4: It's clear as day. The athletic department can do whatever
- 4:03Speaker 4: they want and say whatever they want. Mike Norvell's got
- 4:06Speaker 4: to get a couple of upset wins to kind of
- 4:08Speaker 4: turn the ship around. And now I said that, watch
- 4:10Speaker 4: as Alabama gets their ass kicked as soon as they go.
- 4:13Speaker 3: Play in week three.
- 4:15Speaker 1: I want to attempt to shine some lights on the positive,
- 4:19Speaker 1: if possible. I know Florida State fans probably don't want
- 4:21Speaker 1: to hear that. Granted, the offensive line... I don't think
- 4:25Speaker 1: is full of world beaters by any means, but Florida
- 4:29Speaker 1: State was able to run the ball in this game.
- 4:31Speaker 1: 217 total yards, 5.6 yards per carry, three rushing touchdowns.
- 4:35Speaker 1: You mentioned explosives. Florida State was able to get that
- 4:39Speaker 1: in the running game, but again, you consider the competition.
- 4:41Speaker 1: What did you think about the way they split things
- 4:43Speaker 1: up between Croma, Singleton, and Wisner? It looked like Croma
- 4:47Speaker 1: had a really nice game overall, and he felt like
- 4:50Speaker 1: somebody who at least... To me, it was the most
- 4:53Speaker 1: reliable offensive threat that Florida State put on the field.
- 4:56Speaker 3: Yeah, but that's the biggest problem, I think, at this point.
- 5:00Speaker 4: You can have three running backs that are okay, and
- 5:03Speaker 4: you're being generous when you say good running backs. I
- 5:05Speaker 4: would say quality running backs. You probably have one really
- 5:08Speaker 4: good and two guys that would be fine in a pitch.
- 5:12Speaker 3: That's what you got.
- 5:13Speaker 5: Hey guys, I'll get right back to the clip of
- 5:14Speaker 5: the power too.
- 5:15Speaker 1: Sorry.
- 5:15Speaker 5: I wasn't on it this week.
- 5:16Speaker 2: Just had terrible wifi where I was up in Tallahassee,
- 5:19Speaker 2: but Tom and Cole went through recapped a bunch of games.
- 5:22Speaker 2: We appreciate you guys for tuning into that live or
- 5:25Speaker 2: watching it on replay here on the clip diversion.
- 5:27Speaker 5: Make sure that you are supporting our friends over at
- 5:29Speaker 5: price picks.
- 5:30Speaker 2: We don't have a lot of picks set for this
- 5:31Speaker 2: week one yet, but we will be picking them all week.
- 5:34Speaker 5: So make sure that you are on the price picks app.
- 5:36Speaker 2: Understand that if you play $ 5 and win that first lineup,
- 5:38Speaker 2: you get $ 150 in lineups instantly and, We appreciate PrizePix
- 5:42Speaker 2: for their support.
- 5:43Speaker 5: Go check them out.
- 5:44Speaker 4: But the fact is that if you can't run the
- 5:46Speaker 4: football because there's no opportunities to create separation in the lines,
- 5:50Speaker 4: it doesn't really matter. Now, again, they had their moments
- 5:53Speaker 4: last night. Every single runner had at least one carry
- 5:56Speaker 4: of over, I think it was 15 yards downfield. You
- 5:58Speaker 4: had the 52-yard run from Croma. Weisner had a couple breakaways.
- 6:02Speaker 4: You had three touchdowns on the night with Daniels' run
- 6:04Speaker 4: and the Singleton run.
- 6:06Speaker 3: So it's like there was some good there.
- 6:08Speaker 4: But again, what I look for is consistency. And I
- 6:12Speaker 4: don't think that you really saw that throughout most of
- 6:16Speaker 4: the evening, whether it was bad execution play calling-wise, or
- 6:19Speaker 4: whether it was just the opportunity to kind of break
- 6:21Speaker 4: on out, or poor offensive line protection. I think that
- 6:24Speaker 4: those are all things that were factors. Like, the way
- 6:27Speaker 4: that I looked at Florida State's offense... Because this is
- 6:31Speaker 4: a car that is definitely running on its last leg,
- 6:35Speaker 4: and you're starting to see it shake, and you're just wondering,
- 6:39Speaker 4: what part do we have to pull on over and
- 6:41Speaker 4: start hitchhiking down the road to be able to go
- 6:45Speaker 4: ahead and get to the gas station to get a tow?
- 6:47Speaker 4: That's where we are right now, I think, when we
- 6:50Speaker 4: talk about what Florida State's offense looked like last night.
- 6:52Speaker 3: It wasn't pretty. You had a couple of moments. There
- 6:55Speaker 3: were some good moments in there.
- 6:58Speaker 4: But you have to kind of like nitpick and like
- 7:00Speaker 4: throw all the trash out of the way to get
- 7:02Speaker 4: to the good that was of last night.
- 7:06Speaker 1: I struggle to look at this schedule and see where
- 7:10Speaker 1: the glimmers of hope are going to be for Florida
- 7:12Speaker 1: State after this performance. Now, granted, give them the benefit
- 7:15Speaker 1: of the doubt. Give both teams the benefit of the doubt. Frankly,
- 7:18Speaker 1: any team in week zero, you're shaking off the rust.
- 7:21Speaker 1: It's a preseason game, essentially, and you're getting yourself acclimated
- 7:25Speaker 1: back into regular season play. But for Florida State, you
- 7:28Speaker 1: play two ranked opponents in the next two weeks. You
- 7:31Speaker 1: host SMU. I I hate that setup for Florida State.
- 7:36Speaker 1: I do not like that matchup. Then you're at Alabama.
- 7:39Speaker 1: You have a home game against Central Arkansas. And then
- 7:42Speaker 1: after that, the rest of your ACC games into November,
- 7:46Speaker 1: home against Virginia, and we'll get to what Virginia did
- 7:48Speaker 1: to NC State here in a moment, at Louisville, at Miami,
- 7:51Speaker 1: home versus Clemson, and then at Boston College on November
- 7:56Speaker 1: 7th is the first game where I can look at
- 7:58Speaker 1: it and say, I think Florida State has a credible
- 8:01Speaker 1: chance to win this game. This does not forecast well
- 8:04Speaker 1: out into the point about Mike Norvell's future. I don't
- 8:08Speaker 1: know at what point they would consider pulling the trigger
- 8:10Speaker 1: or if they would pull the trigger midseason or letting
- 8:12Speaker 1: him finish the season. I'm sure TJ will have more
- 8:15Speaker 1: insight on this as the week goes by, but this
- 8:18Speaker 1: is not a really strong start to the season. I
- 8:21Speaker 1: don't know what you look at with this team and
- 8:23Speaker 1: really have a tremendous amount of hope. The pass rush
- 8:26Speaker 1: was not there against an inferior opponent. New Mexico State
- 8:30Speaker 1: had time to try and make things happen. This was
- 8:34Speaker 1: 17-10 midway through the third quarter. This was a game
- 8:38Speaker 1: at one point. So I don't know what people were
- 8:41Speaker 1: necessarily really expecting coming into this. I think the hope
- 8:44Speaker 1: for Florida State fans is, hey, we should blow them out.
- 8:46Speaker 1: We should look sharp, clean, and take care of business.
- 8:49Speaker 1: And That's not at all what this looked like. And
- 8:51Speaker 1: looking ahead at the rest of the season, Cole, I'm
- 8:54Speaker 1: worried for Florida State's win-loss record.
- 8:58Speaker 4: I think that if you want to walk away with
- 9:01Speaker 4: positives last night, regardless of what the score was, you
- 9:04Speaker 4: could have ran it up by 60 or you could
- 9:05Speaker 4: have run by like 5.
- 9:06Speaker 1: Sure.
- 9:08Speaker 4: You need to feel like that the offensive line that
- 9:10Speaker 4: you spent the entire offseason trying to revamp was going
- 9:13Speaker 4: to look more promising. That there was going to be
- 9:17Speaker 4: a secondary receiver to pair alongside with Deuce Robinson. That
- 9:21Speaker 4: you felt like the quarterback position, while definitely nowhere near
- 9:26Speaker 4: what you had last season with Tommy Castellanos, was at
- 9:28Speaker 4: least going to be sufficient to keep you in games.
- 9:31Speaker 4: And I walk away from last night's performance where the
- 9:34Speaker 4: play calling was pedestrianly pitiful at best. At best, with
- 9:41Speaker 4: your head coach leading the charge. Your offensive line looked awful.
- 9:44Speaker 4: There was no protection outside of, I would say, Xavier Chaplin.
- 9:49Speaker 4: Your run game is fine, but fine is not going
- 9:51Speaker 4: to cut it when you have, when you go up
- 9:53Speaker 4: against teams that are basically, like Virginia. When you face
- 9:57Speaker 4: off against Virginia, they're going to say, no, we're going
- 9:58Speaker 4: to force you to throw it downfield. and you're not
- 10:00Speaker 4: going to be able to beat us there either. But like,
- 10:02Speaker 4: that's a question mark. I guess you want to go
- 10:04Speaker 4: with Makai Dancy being the number two receiver because he
- 10:07Speaker 4: was second in the receiving yards last night. Cool, you
- 10:10Speaker 4: found that out, but it's just a bad, bad taste
- 10:15Speaker 4: in your mouth walking away with a win. Like, There
- 10:18Speaker 4: are teams that will certainly say there's expectations that we have.
- 10:22Speaker 4: And when we end up giving 200 yards of offense passing,
- 10:26Speaker 4: it's a bad look for us.
- 10:28Speaker 3: This is just right now the norm of Florida State.
- 10:31Speaker 3: This is the current status of Florida State. Oh, yeah,
- 10:33Speaker 3: we won a game, but it wasn't pretty.
- 10:34Speaker 4: And if you play that way against a team like
- 10:36Speaker 4: SMU next week, you're not going to survive past the
- 10:39Speaker 4: second quarter. And then if you go into Alabama, an
- 10:42Speaker 4: Alabama team that I may remind you, even if you
- 10:44Speaker 4: say this is going to be like our standard because
- 10:47Speaker 4: we just have Alabama's number, I promise you Kalen Bore has.
- 10:50Speaker 3: Circled that for years. since week one of last season.
- 10:53Speaker 4: He has made it clear when we get the revenge
- 10:55Speaker 4: and you come to our house, foot's on the gas
- 10:58Speaker 4: and we're not taking it off until we literally leave
- 11:00Speaker 4: no shred of a body left behind. Like that's where
- 11:04Speaker 4: you are. So you're looking at a one and two
- 11:06Speaker 4: start where even in your first game, it wasn't pretty.
- 11:10Speaker 4: That's not a good way to start off your season.
- 11:12Speaker 4: And that's certainly not a way to boost confidence if
- 11:14Speaker 4: you are anyone inside of Tallahassee that Mike Norvell can
- 11:18Speaker 4: figure this out. I think that he realizes he's in
- 11:20Speaker 4: over his head right now. I think everybody around the
- 11:22Speaker 4: program realizes it. And spare me with the, oh yeah, well,
- 11:25Speaker 4: we found a way to win. Guys, you found a
- 11:28Speaker 4: way to win against a middling, underwhelming Conference USA team.
- 11:33Speaker 4: And at one point, there was an opportunity to where
- 11:35Speaker 4: they could have tied this up. If that's how you
- 11:39Speaker 4: want to take away a win, then Florida State has
- 11:41Speaker 4: fallen so far off in terms of what expectations are.
- 11:46Speaker 3: I can't really help you at this point.
- 11:48Speaker 4: And honestly, if you're going to talk about when eventually
- 11:51Speaker 4: we maybe see a correlation of, oh, now we're going
- 11:54Speaker 4: to have a Super Conference League. If you're okay with
- 11:57Speaker 4: the results last night and you don't want to change.
- 11:59Speaker 3: Any of that, no, no, no, no, but a win's
- 12:00Speaker 3: a win. You know what? When they end up doing
- 12:03Speaker 3: the Super League, maybe you should stay in the ACC.
