Transcript
- 0:04Speaker 1: Our thanks to Mike Gola Jr. for joining us in
- 0:06Speaker 1: Set 1.
- 0:07Speaker 2: Joel Anderson, the ringer tailgate, he's going to join us
- 0:09Speaker 2: coming up in about 10 minutes.
- 0:11Speaker 1: Taylor has a Stugatz of the Day. What do you
- 0:13Speaker 1: have for us, Taylor?
- 0:15Speaker 3: So the Stugatz of the Day revolves around the Super
- 0:19Speaker 3: Bowl this upcoming year.
- 0:20Speaker 1: What happened there?
- 0:22Speaker 3: I was going to say Super Bowl, but then I
- 0:24Speaker 3: meant to say halftime, so I said super time, and
- 0:27Speaker 3: then I got in my head as I was trying
- 0:30Speaker 3: to correct it in a sentence, and then you kind
- 0:33Speaker 3: of jumped on it and pounced on it.
- 0:34Speaker 1: Well, I'm sorry.
- 0:34Speaker 2: I mean, listen, people have been jumping on me and
- 0:36Speaker 2: pouncing on me for 20 years, and now I have
- 0:38Speaker 2: an opportunity to do.
- 0:39Speaker 1: It to you.
- 0:39Speaker 3: The second I said super time, you smelt the vulnerability
- 0:43Speaker 3: coming through this room.
- 0:44Speaker 1: I sure did. Yep, a mile away, I mean.
- 0:46Speaker 3: So the Stugatz of the day revolves around the Super
- 0:49Speaker 3: Bowl halftime show this upcoming season in L.A. So Jay-Z
- 0:55Speaker 3: is the decision maker for the Super Bowl halftime show.
- 0:58Speaker 3: After his company, Roc Nation, reached an agreement with the
- 1:02Speaker 3: NFL in 2019 that Jay-Z would be the one, on
- 1:05Speaker 3: behalf of Roc Nation, to decide who the talent's going
- 1:08Speaker 3: to be for the Super Bowl. This season... For the
- 1:12Speaker 3: Super Bowl in L.A., Jay-Z has picked, drumroll, himself.
- 1:17Speaker 1: All right. I'm proud of him.
- 1:19Speaker 3: Yes.
- 1:20Speaker 1: L.J. Why would you pick anyone else?
- 1:27Speaker 4: I mean.
- 1:28Speaker 3: It makes you wonder if he's had this power since 2019. Right.
- 1:33Speaker 3: What took so long for him to pick himself?
- 1:35Speaker 1: Do you think Jay-Z, or Jay as I like to
- 1:38Speaker 1: call him.
- 1:38Speaker 3: Hova.
- 1:40Speaker 1: LJ. Do you think Jay-Z actually.
- 1:44Speaker 2: Do you think he thought about a different act? Do
- 1:46Speaker 2: you think he considered anyone else? Do you think he
- 1:48Speaker 2: talked to anyone else? Or did Jay-Z know it was
- 1:50Speaker 2: going to be Jay-Z the entire time?
- 1:53Speaker 3: I believe Jay-Z knew it was Jay-Z the entire time.
- 1:56Speaker 2: Right.
- 1:56Speaker 3: But he presented it. He goes into his boardroom at
- 1:59Speaker 3: Roc Nation. Yes. Almost like a college signing day. There's
- 2:03Speaker 3: a Justin Bieber hat. There's a Miley Cyrus hat. And
- 2:06Speaker 3: then there's a Jay-Z hat.
- 2:07Speaker 1: Yes.
- 2:07Speaker 3: And then everybody's looking at the table and goes, well,
- 2:10Speaker 3: he's not picking the Jay-Z hat. He's Jay-Z.
- 2:13Speaker 1: Right.
- 2:14Speaker 3: It's got to be Bieber. It's got to be Miley Cyrus.
- 2:16Speaker 3: It's got to be somebody from L.A. Right. And then
- 2:19Speaker 3: Jay-Z gets up and he goes, I'm taking my talents.
- 2:23Speaker 3: To Tinseltown.
- 2:24Speaker 2: Yes, he chooses himself. But you're saying he went through
- 2:27Speaker 2: the motions. He really sold it. He actually acted like
- 2:30Speaker 2: he was looking for an act for the Super Bowl
- 2:31Speaker 2: halftime show.
- 2:32Speaker 3: Yeah, he flew in Bad Bunny, said, we had Bad
- 2:34Speaker 3: Bunny last year, but maybe we get Bad Bunny back.
- 2:36Speaker 3: Bad Bunny's huge. Do we want to invoke Taylor Swift,
- 2:41Speaker 3: play the Taylor Swift card with Travis Kelsey? He presented
- 2:45Speaker 3: it like he was bringing everybody in on official visits,
- 2:47Speaker 3: showing them... you know, showing them the town, rolling out
- 2:51Speaker 3: the red carpets for them. In the back of his mind,
- 2:53Speaker 3: he was like, yeah, I'm choosing myself this entire time.
- 2:55Speaker 2: It reminds me of Joe Bailey, a headhunter that the
- 2:58Speaker 2: Dolphins hired to find.
- 3:00Speaker 1: Their new CEO and GM, I think.
- 3:03Speaker 2: And after an extensive search and many, many interviews, Joe
- 3:06Speaker 2: Bailey decided one day when he woke up and looked
- 3:08Speaker 2: in the mirror that the guy for.
- 3:09Speaker 1: The job was Joe Bailey.
- 3:11Speaker 3: How did it work out for him?
- 3:13Speaker 1: Not well. But he got the job.
- 3:17Speaker 2: He was a headhunter hired to go get someone else,
- 3:21Speaker 2: and the person he hired was himself.
- 3:23Speaker 3: A real tough selection committee.
- 3:25Speaker 2: Well, it's Jay-Z. Give me your emotions here, Taylor.
- 3:31Speaker 1: It's weird.
- 3:33Speaker 2: As we tape this, the NBA tips off in about
- 3:35Speaker 2: an hour. It's out at 3 o'clock in the afternoon game.
- 3:38Speaker 2: But we have Knicks and Sixers tonight before we get
- 3:40Speaker 2: to Joel Anderson. Are you going to be emotional tonight
- 3:43Speaker 2: with the Knicks hanging a banner to the rafters at
- 3:47Speaker 2: the Mecca? Jalen Brunson, it's going to be a great night.
- 3:49Speaker 2: The Sixers are in town. LeBron James doesn't have to
- 3:52Speaker 2: leave town. He just goes right to MSG. He lives
- 3:55Speaker 2: in New York City. Will you be emotional tonight? Because
- 3:58Speaker 2: I think I will.
- 3:59Speaker 3: I don't think I'll be emotional tonight. Like tears? No,
- 4:04Speaker 3: I don't think I could cry over a banner. All
- 4:07Speaker 3: the tears. I used all my tears when they won
- 4:11Speaker 3: the finals. Right, like right after they won. You can't
- 4:13Speaker 3: cry over a piece of cloth.
- 4:15Speaker 1: Put it on the poll.
- 4:16Speaker 2: Can you cry over a piece of cloth?
- 4:19Speaker 3: My biggest question for banner night tonight. Yes. Is the
- 4:24Speaker 3: banner already up and we're doing the reveal down? Or
- 4:29Speaker 3: is the banner starting on the floor and we're pulling
- 4:31Speaker 3: it up? Because I'd rather pull it up.
- 4:34Speaker 1: I think the banner is covered. They reveal it to
- 4:36Speaker 1: the players.
- 4:37Speaker 2: No.
- 4:38Speaker 1: No, no, no, no. I think they pull it up.
- 4:40Speaker 1: I do.
- 4:41Speaker 3: From the ground, from the floor.
- 4:42Speaker 1: Yes, a nice touch would be, I don't know what
- 4:43Speaker 1: they're doing. I have no idea.
- 4:45Speaker 2: But you should have guys like Patrick Ewing and John
- 4:48Speaker 2: Starks out there to raise that banner, to pull the strings.
- 4:51Speaker 1: You know what I'm saying?
- 4:52Speaker 3: One pull each.
- 4:52Speaker 1: Yes, maybe Tom Thibodeau. Wow.
- 4:55Speaker 3: Julius Randall come into town, pull.
- 4:59Speaker 1: If I told you two guys were going to do that,
- 5:01Speaker 1: who would you go with?
- 5:02Speaker 3: Ewing and starks is pretty good yeah ewing and starks
- 5:05Speaker 3: just because you know how much it means to them
- 5:07Speaker 3: but it feels like everybody's pull has to be like
- 5:10Speaker 3: equal to like how much you contributed to the title
- 5:13Speaker 3: like like latrell spreewell can come over he just gets
- 5:16Speaker 3: like a little like a little tug a slight tug
- 5:19Speaker 3: and then jaylen brunson it's like okay he's gonna jaylen
- 5:22Speaker 3: brunson once we get it three quarters of the way
- 5:24Speaker 3: we we send everybody on their way and say jaylen
- 5:27Speaker 3: You got it from here, Captain.
- 5:28Speaker 2: I like Sprewell with a tug. I like Ewing getting
- 5:31Speaker 2: it up like halfway.
- 5:32Speaker 3: Spike Lee thinks he gets a tug.
- 5:34Speaker 1: Well, do you think he'll get a tug?
- 5:36Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 5:37Speaker 5: Yes.
- 5:38Speaker 3: He should.
- 5:40Speaker 2: If Spike Lee was in charge of choosing who's going
- 5:43Speaker 2: to tug the strings to pull the banner up, he
- 5:45Speaker 2: would choose himself, right?
- 5:47Speaker 3: Like Jay-Z?
- 5:47Speaker 4: 100%.
- 5:48Speaker 3: He would get 100% of the tugs.
- 5:49Speaker 2: I like the idea of Ewing getting it halfway up
- 5:51Speaker 2: there and Brunson taking it home.
- 5:53Speaker 1: You know what I'm saying?
- 5:54Speaker 3: A passing under the torch almost.
- 5:55Speaker 4: Yes.
- 5:55Speaker 3: But Ewing never won a title. Stop making this title
- 5:58Speaker 3: about yourself, Ewing. No disrespect.
- 6:05Speaker 1: Joel Anderson. You totally disrespected him. Joel Anderson.
- 6:10Speaker 2: Next. He is the inventor of Raise the Roof and
- 6:14Speaker 2: the fastest 10-year-old of all time. Joel Anderson is with us.
- 6:18Speaker 2: Check him out at the Ringer tailgate, wherever you get
- 6:21Speaker 2: your podcasts. Let's start with Texas.
- 6:24Speaker 1: Here, Joel. Thank you for doing this, by the way.
- 6:26Speaker 4: Oh, of course, man. Anytime, Stu. I mean that, literally.
- 6:29Speaker 1: Okay. Anytime.
- 6:30Speaker 4: Except, you know, when I remember. Yes, yes.
- 6:32Speaker 2: Well, you forgot yesterday you were apologizing for being unprofessional,
- 6:36Speaker 2: and I said I've been unprofessional my entire life, and
- 6:38Speaker 2: you said you don't strive to be me, and you shouldn't.
- 6:40Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 6:41Speaker 5: Well, I mean, you should want everybody to try to
- 6:44Speaker 5: surpass you, Stu. I mean, you're at the top of
- 6:46Speaker 5: the mountain. I want to try to get up there
- 6:48Speaker 5: and pass it someday.
- 6:49Speaker 4: Okay, man.
- 6:50Speaker 1: But it's okay. I just want you to know it's okay. Yesterday,
- 6:53Speaker 1: it's fine. I understand. Stuff happens, you know?
- 6:56Speaker 5: Yeah, look, man, nobody, you know, the thing is, is
- 6:59Speaker 5: probably nobody holds me accountable. I'm at a place in
- 7:02Speaker 5: my career where nobody, I don't have anybody that tells.
- 7:04Speaker 4: Me what to do other than my wife. You know
- 7:06Speaker 4: what I mean? So, you know, I need some more discipline.
- 7:10Speaker 4: That's clear.
- 7:11Speaker 2: Speaking of wives, I told my wife, I said, Joel
- 7:13Speaker 2: Anderson's coming on. She said, with all due respect to Joel,
- 7:16Speaker 2: who is that? And I said, he was the inventor
- 7:18Speaker 2: of Raise the Roof. And she said, that's bullshit.
- 7:23Speaker 4: I know.
- 7:23Speaker 1: And I was offended on your behalf. I said to her,
- 7:26Speaker 1: it's not bullshit.
- 7:26Speaker 4: Look it up.
- 7:27Speaker 1: I mean, what? I mean, what?
- 7:29Speaker 4: Has she even done the research?
- 7:31Speaker 2: No.
- 7:32Speaker 4: Has she even looked it up? How does she know? Anyway,
- 7:36Speaker 4: how does she know?
- 7:37Speaker 3: She doesn't know anything about the Houston comments. She doesn't
- 7:39Speaker 3: know anything about the Houston comments.
- 7:41Speaker 1: Yes, we're kindred spirits. I mean, no research.
- 7:45Speaker 5: I mean, that's unfortunate. So show her the clip. I'll
- 7:48Speaker 5: show her the clip. Give me her number, Stu, and
- 7:51Speaker 5: I'll talk this out with her.
- 7:52Speaker 1: I'm going to do that, actually. Right after we hang up,
- 7:54Speaker 1: I will text you my wife's number. Okay, yeah.
- 7:57Speaker 4: I want to make the case.
- 7:59Speaker 2: Yes. Let's start with Arch Manning in Texas here. I
- 8:02Speaker 2: have three scenarios for you for Arch Manning. He stays
- 8:05Speaker 2: at Texas, he transfers after the season's over, or he
- 8:09Speaker 2: gets drafted in the first round.
- 8:11Speaker 1: Which is the most probable of those outcomes?
- 8:17Speaker 4: Oh, man.
- 8:19Speaker 1: Sorry.
- 8:20Speaker 4: No, that's tough.
- 8:21Speaker 5: I don't think three is likely because he could leave
- 8:25Speaker 5: and enter the draft, but there's no way he'd be
- 8:27Speaker 5: a first-round pick right now. Nobody would put that kind
- 8:30Speaker 5: of capital on him. So it depends on what you
- 8:34Speaker 5: think is going to happen with Sark.
- 8:36Speaker 4: So if Sark gets fired, then I.
- 8:39Speaker 5: Can envision a scenario in which Arch sticks around and
- 8:42Speaker 5: they try to get a coach who can try to
- 8:44Speaker 5: get the most out of him for at least one
- 8:46Speaker 5: more year.
- 8:46Speaker 4: Right.
- 8:48Speaker 5: The more likely scenario, which, man, it seems crazy to
- 8:52Speaker 5: think about this as potentially happening, is him transferring someplace
- 8:56Speaker 5: else and spending a year in tutelage under somebody else.
- 8:59Speaker 5: Somebody that at least has a current record. for working
- 9:05Speaker 5: with great quarterbacks, right? I mean, it could be Lincoln.
- 9:08Speaker 1: Riley, right?
- 9:09Speaker 2: Lincoln Riley could use Arch Manning. Yes, he could, but
- 9:12Speaker 2: you don't know if Lincoln Riley will be at USC, right?
- 9:15Speaker 4: That's the thing.
- 9:16Speaker 5: I mean, man, USC, they're very rich, but I don't
- 9:19Speaker 5: know if they're $ 70 million rich.
- 9:22Speaker 4: That's a lot of money to get rid of them.
- 9:24Speaker 5: And, you know, USC's only lost one game.
- 9:25Speaker 4: They're still in the playoff hunt.
- 9:27Speaker 5: I know their fans hate him, but there's still a
- 9:29Speaker 5: chance that they could, you know, their goals are in
- 9:31Speaker 5: front of them. With Texas and Steve Sarkisian, It looks
- 9:35Speaker 5: like what else you don't need. They should not need
- 9:40Speaker 5: more sample size here.
- 9:41Speaker 4: Right. Right.
- 9:42Speaker 5: It's like it's not going to happen. He's not the
- 9:44Speaker 5: guy like he's been. The thing is, if you think
- 9:47Speaker 5: about it, he's been coaching 13 years. He's had three
- 9:50Speaker 5: really good jobs.
- 9:51Speaker 4: Yes.
- 9:51Speaker 5: Jobs where guys have won and played in national championships before.
- 9:55Speaker 4: He has one conference championship in 13 years. And it
- 9:59Speaker 4: was the last.
- 10:00Speaker 5: Big 12 championship. So I don't... I would think if
- 10:04Speaker 5: I were the UTAD, I'd be wealthy. That'd be one thing.
- 10:09Speaker 4: And I'd probably do... I think I could do a
- 10:10Speaker 4: good job. But I would want somebody.
- 10:15Speaker 5: That I think that could work with Arch and also
- 10:17Speaker 5: has a record for working with quarterbacks. make one that
- 10:20Speaker 5: surpasses the old Steve Sarkeesian resume.
- 10:23Speaker 4: Sure.
- 10:24Speaker 3: Joel, do you think there's a path back for Bryce
- 10:26Speaker 3: Underwood at Michigan after he gets benched?
- 10:28Speaker 4: Absolutely not.
- 10:29Speaker 1: That's it.
- 10:31Speaker 4: Well, absolutely.
- 10:32Speaker 5: Because I mean, if you're Bryce Underwood and the people,
- 10:36Speaker 5: his handlers, his family, why would you want to go back?
- 10:39Speaker 1: Right.
- 10:39Speaker 4: Like you don't like the thing.
- 10:41Speaker 5: And again, we're talking about people who work with college
- 10:43Speaker 5: quarterbacks and I bring this up all the time. Kyle Whittingham,
- 10:48Speaker 5: in 20 years as a head coach, never had a
- 10:51Speaker 5: quarterback drafted.
- 10:53Speaker 1: Never!
- 10:53Speaker 4: Like, Tyler Huntley was undrafted, and he's managed to spend
- 10:56Speaker 4: some time in the league, and he's done well. I
- 10:59Speaker 4: think he made a Pro Bowl once.
- 11:01Speaker 1: Yeah, but.
- 11:03Speaker 4: I mean, that's the thing. If you're Bryce Underwood, and
- 11:08Speaker 4: presumably that's still your goal. You don't go from.
- 11:11Speaker 5: I was a five star number one recruit to, I
- 11:15Speaker 5: just want to, you know, salvage my college career and just.
- 11:17Speaker 4: Get some snaps.
- 11:18Speaker 5: No, you, you still, he's, I'm sure he and his
- 11:21Speaker 5: family still think if I get with the right coach
- 11:23Speaker 5: and link up with the right coach, there's somebody that
- 11:25Speaker 5: can get, you know, they can unlock this talent. And
- 11:28Speaker 5: I'm sure there's a coach out there that looks at
- 11:30Speaker 5: him and says, Oh, I could do something with that.
- 11:32Speaker 4: Coaches are, you know, they've.
- 11:34Speaker 5: Got the egos to believe that you got to believe
- 11:36Speaker 5: that you can, you're the guy that can make somebody work.
- 11:39Speaker 4: So there's, If I was Bryce Underwood, I.
- 11:42Speaker 5: Wouldn't want to go back to Kyle Whittingham and I
- 11:43Speaker 5: wouldn't want to go back to the Michigan fan base because,
- 11:46Speaker 5: I mean, they've been shitting on that dude, you know,
- 11:49Speaker 5: a year and a half now, man. It just, sometimes
- 11:52Speaker 5: you need to start over. And this seems one of
- 11:54Speaker 5: those cases that, like, if it does not occur to
- 11:57Speaker 5: Bryce Underwood's team that he needs to start over, then
- 12:00Speaker 5: he needs a new team.
- 12:01Speaker 4: Yes.
- 12:01Speaker 2: I think we need to stop using the Pro Bowl,
- 12:04Speaker 2: holding it up as some sort of accomplishment.
- 12:06Speaker 4: Oh, I know.
- 12:06Speaker 2: The Tyler Huntley Pro Bowl thing.
- 12:09Speaker 5: I mean, that's just like, how many games did Tyler
- 12:12Speaker 5: Huntley even start the year that he made.
- 12:14Speaker 4: The Pro Bowl?
- 12:15Speaker 2: I have no idea. Yeah, no idea. He's always there
- 12:17Speaker 2: for Lamar, though, just in the event that he gets hurt,
- 12:19Speaker 2: you know?
- 12:19Speaker 5: That's what I'm saying. Yeah, man, I was shocked. I
- 12:22Speaker 5: was like, man, he's still in the NFL, bro. Congrats
- 12:27Speaker 5: to him. I didn't know that he was still making
- 12:29Speaker 5: it out there.
- 12:29Speaker 1: Go ahead, Taylor.
- 12:30Speaker 3: He started four regular season games his.
- 12:33Speaker 1: Pro Bowl season. Come on, man.
- 12:35Speaker 5: Who are you in here, man? You know what I'm saying?
- 12:39Speaker 5: They don't even play that game in Hawaii anymore. It's
- 12:41Speaker 5: just nobody.
- 12:42Speaker 4: I mean, when's the last time y'all sat down and
- 12:44Speaker 4: watched a Pro Bowl? Never. I didn't watch it when
- 12:48Speaker 4: I watched every football game.
- 12:50Speaker 1: Right, yes.
- 12:51Speaker 5: I watched the blue-gray all-star college football game more than
- 12:55Speaker 5: I watched the NFL football.
- 12:56Speaker 1: Of course, yes. The senior game, you're saying, right?
- 12:58Speaker 4: Yeah, that senior game. Yeah, they were playing on Christmas
- 13:00Speaker 4: or whatever.
- 13:01Speaker 1: Right, yeah, it was great.
- 13:02Speaker 4: It was like all the guys that didn't play in
- 13:03Speaker 4: bowl games.
- 13:03Speaker 1: Yes.
- 13:04Speaker 4: I watched that a lot more than I watched the
- 13:06Speaker 4: Pro Bowl. Yes.
- 13:07Speaker 2: Bear was on with us yesterday, and even while losing,
- 13:10Speaker 2: he felt like Indiana had a better chance of making
- 13:14Speaker 2: it to a national championship then Ohio State, because of
- 13:17Speaker 2: the injury to Julian Sane.
- 13:19Speaker 1: Do you agree with that?
- 13:20Speaker 4: Oh, yeah, absolutely.
- 13:21Speaker 1: Really?
- 13:22Speaker 5: Yeah, I don't know how many losses that the committee
- 13:27Speaker 5: is willing to allow Ohio State to have just because
- 13:31Speaker 5: their quarterback isn't healthy. And Ohio State, if you believe it,
- 13:34Speaker 5: I think they've got the hardest schedule in the country.
- 13:38Speaker 5: I mean, they've got USC, they've got Oregon, they've got Michigan.
- 13:42Speaker 5: And again, it doesn't make a difference how good Michigan is.
- 13:45Speaker 5: They're firmly in Ryan Day's head. So that's going to
- 13:48Speaker 5: be an adventure no matter what. And now maybe Julian
- 13:51Speaker 5: Sand will be back earlier than that. And, you know,
- 13:54Speaker 5: this will all be not, you know, this is.
- 13:56Speaker 4: All for naught.
- 13:57Speaker 5: But I don't feel good about the quarterbacks that they
- 14:01Speaker 5: put out there. The quarterback, the Fahey kid, I didn't
- 14:03Speaker 5: feel good about that. And clearly they didn't trust him.
- 14:06Speaker 5: Now maybe they get a chance. You know, they have
- 14:08Speaker 5: some time to game plan. They got a bye week,
- 14:10Speaker 5: so maybe they can figure out some stuff. But I
- 14:12Speaker 5: don't feel good about Ohio State's chances. Whereas with Indiana,
- 14:16Speaker 5: their schedule is okay. I mean, they're going to Michigan
- 14:20Speaker 5: this week, and that'll be tough for them. But I
- 14:23Speaker 5: feel like when you saw that game, you saw with Indiana, oh,
- 14:27Speaker 5: I can see a path for them. This is being
- 14:29Speaker 5: a mulligan, and they'll be okay. They don't make a
- 14:32Speaker 5: lot of turnovers. They don't make a lot of penalties.
- 14:37Speaker 5: I can see them running the table. I believe in
- 14:39Speaker 5: Kurt Cignetti that much. He's got me to believe that
- 14:42Speaker 5: Indiana football, for whatever reason, is the most consistently good
- 14:46Speaker 5: program in the country.
- 14:47Speaker 3: Joel, if I was playing devil's advocate on Ohio State's
- 14:50Speaker 3: behalf and their quarterback situation, Jeremiah Smith?
- 14:56Speaker 4: Oh, like do a little Wildcat with him?
- 14:58Speaker 1: No, just him.
- 14:59Speaker 3: Just the fact that that quarterback, whatever quarterback you don't
- 15:02Speaker 3: feel that good about, they get to throw to him.
- 15:04Speaker 3: You just throw the ball to Jeremiah Smith, right?
- 15:05Speaker 4: You know what I mean?
- 15:07Speaker 5: I mean, I've seen in my lifetime, so TCU, I
- 15:12Speaker 5: cannot remember who the quarterback, I think it was Max Duggan,
- 15:15Speaker 5: when he was at TCU early in his career, before
- 15:18Speaker 5: he had the renaissance. And TCU had this receiver, Jalen Rager,
- 15:23Speaker 5: you may remember, he was first round pick, Went to Philly.
- 15:25Speaker 5: And I felt so bad for Jalen Rager because he
- 15:28Speaker 5: was just doing wind sprints every fucking game.
- 15:29Speaker 4: Oh, I have a lot of curse words. Yes, you do.
- 15:33Speaker 5: So Jalen Rager's just going out there doing wind sprints,
- 15:35Speaker 5: the passes are sailing over his head, and he would
- 15:37Speaker 5: just get so frustrated. And I could totally imagine Jeremiah Smith, who,
- 15:41Speaker 5: as far as I can tell, is the ultimate teammate.
- 15:43Speaker 5: He seems like a good kid, that he's willing to
- 15:46Speaker 5: do whatever it takes.
- 15:47Speaker 4: But at a.
- 15:48Speaker 5: Certain point, I mean, man, you need somebody to throw
- 15:52Speaker 5: you the ball accurately to somebody that's not going to
- 15:54Speaker 5: throw hospital balls, all that stuff. Like, Jeremiah Smith is great,
- 15:57Speaker 5: the greatest college wide receiver I've ever seen in my life.
- 16:00Speaker 5: But can't nothing help you if your quarterback back there
- 16:03Speaker 5: is weak. Remember when Julian Sand looked terrible in the
- 16:06Speaker 5: opening game against Texas a few weeks ago? The first game,
- 16:12Speaker 5: his first game of the season opener last year.
- 16:14Speaker 4: He looked horrible. And Jeremiah Smith was getting frustrated in
- 16:17Speaker 4: that game. Yes, yes.
- 16:18Speaker 5: So, like, just imagine that over a season where he
- 16:22Speaker 5: came back, this is all he's here for, to play
- 16:24Speaker 5: for a national championship, to be a Heisman Trophy finalist,
- 16:27Speaker 5: and he's playing with a guy that's got a, you know,
- 16:30Speaker 5: a foot for an.
- 16:31Speaker 4: Arm, bro. Yeah. So I don't know.
- 16:33Speaker 5: I don't, I don't, I don't, it doesn't, it's going
- 16:36Speaker 5: to take more than that.
- 16:37Speaker 4: They're going to need somebody that can actually get him
- 16:38Speaker 4: to ball accurately.
- 16:39Speaker 1: Reagan went one pick in the draft before Justin Jefferson.
- 16:43Speaker 2: Wow.
- 16:43Speaker 1: Hey, man.
- 16:46Speaker 5: Hey, man, look, man, I have to be his apologist, man.
- 16:52Speaker 4: I don't know what happened to the league. I don't
- 16:55Speaker 4: know who his quarterbacks were those years.
- 16:57Speaker 5: But Jalen Rager was the best athlete that TCU has
- 17:01Speaker 5: had since LaDainian Tomlinson.
- 17:02Speaker 1: Yes.
- 17:03Speaker 4: Years of watching him. He was really good.
- 17:04Speaker 5: Now, you know, the TCU receivers like Josh Dodson and
- 17:08Speaker 5: Quentin Johnson, It hasn't really quite worked out, but Jalen
- 17:11Speaker 5: Rager was that dude, man.
- 17:13Speaker 1: Yes.
- 17:13Speaker 2: It seems like we forgot that Mississippi might be the
- 17:16Speaker 2: best team in the country.
- 17:17Speaker 1: It definitely has the best player in the country. Fair. Yes.
- 17:21Speaker 4: Chambers, man. He's amazing. I mean, he really is.
- 17:23Speaker 5: I mean, again, he's 24 years old and he's five
- 17:26Speaker 5: foot 11. And if you can overlook all that and
- 17:28Speaker 5: don't think about like his NFL future, like that dude
- 17:31Speaker 5: is a dimer. Like he can just he it's he
- 17:35Speaker 5: gives you a chance in every game. Mississippi does not.
- 17:38Speaker 5: Ole Miss does not have a good defense in spite
- 17:40Speaker 5: of what happened against Mizzou last week. They've been one
- 17:42Speaker 5: of the worst defenses in the country. And in spite
- 17:45Speaker 5: of that, against teams with other good offenses, he's been
- 17:47Speaker 5: able to overcome them. And I just, yeah, like we,
- 17:50Speaker 5: it's just like, we forgot, you know, we was like, Oh,
- 17:52Speaker 5: we got fascinated with Jeremiah Smith and Camario and Keelan Russell.
- 17:57Speaker 5: And it was like, Oh yeah, actually that dude, uh,
- 17:59Speaker 5: Trinidad Chambliss, the one who almost led Ole Miss to
- 18:02Speaker 5: the national championship, which is crazy. If you've been following
- 18:04Speaker 5: college football your whole life, uh, That guy is the
- 18:08Speaker 5: best player in the country. The quarterback I trust the most, yes.
- 18:12Speaker 3: Joel, when Alabama loses to Georgia, I think a lot
- 18:15Speaker 3: of people still felt good about Alabama because we wanted
- 18:18Speaker 3: to see Kalen DeBoer have some edge with this team,
- 18:20Speaker 3: have some physicality and toughness, and it looked like they
- 18:23Speaker 3: got that against Georgia. And then they kind of reverted
- 18:26Speaker 3: back to their old ways against Tennessee where they kind
- 18:28Speaker 3: of got manhandled on both sides of the trenches. Where's
- 18:32Speaker 3: your level of concern at with this Alabama team sitting
- 18:34Speaker 3: at 5-2?
- 18:37Speaker 4: What if Georgia is overrated? Yeah.
- 18:39Speaker 3: They might.
- 18:40Speaker 1: They might be.
- 18:41Speaker 5: Georgia had not played anybody, and they barely eked out
- 18:44Speaker 5: a win over Bama. And then they go to, you know,
- 18:48Speaker 5: at home against Auburn, Auburn who had shown no capability
- 18:52Speaker 5: of doing anything like that.
- 18:53Speaker 4: Auburn kicked their head in. Okay? Yes.
- 18:57Speaker 5: So to take that to Bama, I mean, again, Bama
- 19:00Speaker 5: had played some tough games. They'd won, you know, they
- 19:04Speaker 5: beat Kentucky pretty good. They beat Mississippi State. But, like,
- 19:08Speaker 5: I don't really know how good that Alabama team was. Like,
- 19:11Speaker 5: they still don't have— the running game is better. They clearly
- 19:15Speaker 5: have one of the best quarterbacks in terms of talent
- 19:17Speaker 5: that they've had since Bryce Young. But, like, I still
- 19:20Speaker 5: couldn't tell a lot about them from that Georgia game.
- 19:23Speaker 5: It just depends on how good you think Georgia is. So, clearly,
- 19:26Speaker 5: the Bama fans, if you read their message boards— They
- 19:30Speaker 5: think that there's a problem there. Now, they always think
- 19:33Speaker 5: there's a problem there. But I'm just looking at that team.
- 19:36Speaker 5: That team does not look dominant or overwhelming. And certainly,
- 19:39Speaker 5: if they're going to compare Kalen DeBoer to Nick Saban
- 19:42Speaker 5: for the rest of Kalen DeBoer's time there, then I
- 19:44Speaker 5: suggest that Kalen DeBoer go somewhere where they appreciate him.
- 19:48Speaker 4: Right. Because it's never going to work. Right.
- 19:50Speaker 1: Well, the problem is they don't have Nick Saban.
- 19:52Speaker 4: Yeah, right. Yeah. But you know what? If they had
- 19:57Speaker 4: had Nick Saban another couple years, I don't.
- 20:00Speaker 1: Like, I don't know.
- 20:01Speaker 4: They were not.
- 20:02Speaker 5: They were the last couple of years. They were not
- 20:04Speaker 5: the same caliber team that they had been.
- 20:07Speaker 4: Yes. Yeah.
- 20:08Speaker 5: But again, Alabama fans, man, what the what the hell
- 20:11Speaker 5: is wrong with y'all? Y'all had an incredible run. You
- 20:14Speaker 5: should be able to sit on your ass and enjoy it.
- 20:16Speaker 1: Thank you.
- 20:17Speaker 4: Like, will you what do you think is supposed to happen? Right.
- 20:19Speaker 2: Like.
- 20:20Speaker 4: I don't understand.
- 20:21Speaker 1: Yes.
- 20:21Speaker 2: I was saying that about Indiana fans. Just enjoy last
- 20:24Speaker 2: year for the next decade, you know?
- 20:25Speaker 4: Yeah. I don't understand.
- 20:27Speaker 5: Like, it's just like, yo, you should be grateful. The
- 20:30Speaker 5: Rockets won two championships in my childhood. And I'm like,
- 20:34Speaker 5: I'm pretty good with that. Like, I would like to
- 20:35Speaker 5: see them win another championship, but it's hard.
- 20:38Speaker 4: Yes. Like, everybody wants to do that. Yes. Yes.
- 20:40Speaker 1: I got my next title. I'm good. I mean, I
- 20:42Speaker 1: don't care if they never win another game.
- 20:43Speaker 2: Yes.
- 20:44Speaker 4: That's what I'm saying. Yeah.
- 20:46Speaker 5: And then you get into the season and then you
- 20:48Speaker 5: get frustrated. And it's just like, But I had that championship, though,
- 20:51Speaker 5: so I'm not going to trip about it. And with Bama,
- 20:54Speaker 5: I mean, again, I don't, you know, I guess they say, look,
- 20:56Speaker 5: we spend a lot of money. We want it more
- 20:59Speaker 5: than anybody else. We want somebody that reflects our commitment
- 21:02Speaker 5: to wanting it more. But I'm just like, man, Georgia
- 21:05Speaker 5: wants it as bad as you do. LSU wants it
- 21:07Speaker 5: as bad as you do.
- 21:08Speaker 1: You got to.
- 21:09Speaker 5: Deal with them boys, man. Every year it ain't going
- 21:11Speaker 5: to be like that. But, yeah, you know, I don't
- 21:13Speaker 5: think Bama is a great team. And as long as
- 21:18Speaker 5: they're not great, that's never going to be good enough
- 21:19Speaker 5: down there.
- 21:20Speaker 1: Two quick ones on Notre Dame. First, did they get
- 21:23Speaker 1: robbed against BYU?
- 21:27Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 21:27Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 21:28Speaker 1: I mean, I don't, I don't, it's hard to say
- 21:30Speaker 1: it hurts me. It does. It's painful.
- 21:31Speaker 4: Yes. Yeah, man. I mean, I look, I, I don't
- 21:34Speaker 4: have anything against Notre Dame, but I also don't like them.
- 21:36Speaker 4: You know what I mean? Like it's just, you know,
- 21:38Speaker 4: they're just kind of whatever.
- 21:39Speaker 5: They have all the advantages, you know, all the money
- 21:42Speaker 5: they want, all the prestige. And, you know, it's just like,
- 21:44Speaker 5: Hey man, sometimes it's just going to happen to you
- 21:46Speaker 5: that you're going to get, be on the wrong side
- 21:48Speaker 5: of a call. Ask Western Michigan about it. But yeah,
- 21:51Speaker 5: I mean, that was, they messed up. I don't, My
- 21:55Speaker 5: thought was that the officials there were like, we got
- 21:58Speaker 5: to get the hell out of here, man.
- 21:59Speaker 4: These people are excited. I don't want.
- 22:01Speaker 1: To be on the field.
- 22:02Speaker 4: I don't want to make them mad. Let's get out
- 22:05Speaker 4: of here.
- 22:05Speaker 5: There's plausible deniability enough.
- 22:07Speaker 4: So yeah, Notre Dame got job.
- 22:09Speaker 5: They should have got, they should, that was pass interference
- 22:13Speaker 5: and they should have had one more down.
- 22:14Speaker 4: Yes.
- 22:15Speaker 2: Notre Dame, can they survive if they lose to Miami?
- 22:18Speaker 2: Can they make the playoff if they lose to UM?
- 22:24Speaker 5: I think people are going to be inclined to want
- 22:26Speaker 5: to make it up to them for last year because
- 22:28Speaker 5: of how mad they got and took their ball and
- 22:30Speaker 5: went home and didn't go to the bowl game.
- 22:32Speaker 1: Yes, plus the BYU call.
- 22:33Speaker 4: Yeah, the BYU call.
- 22:35Speaker 5: So, yeah, I can see people being like, all right.
- 22:38Speaker 5: And that game was on the road.
- 22:39Speaker 1: Yes.
- 22:41Speaker 5: But, yeah, I think they can survive, but it's not
- 22:44Speaker 5: a case that I would be excited about.
- 22:46Speaker 4: Right. And they should have to sweat it out. Yes.
- 22:49Speaker 4: They should have to sweat it out.
- 22:50Speaker 2: Joel Anderson, the ringer tailgate. Check him out wherever you
- 22:53Speaker 2: get your podcast. They're fantastic. He's fantastic. Final question on
- 22:58Speaker 2: the way out, at least for me. I don't know
- 22:59Speaker 2: if Taylor has another one here, but Miami, what were
- 23:03Speaker 2: your thoughts there? Yes, I think they're the best team
- 23:06Speaker 2: in the country, although I have to question after what
- 23:08Speaker 2: I saw against Florida State. Does Mike Norvell have a
- 23:11Speaker 2: right to be upset about those last two plays?
- 23:13Speaker 4: Hell yeah.
- 23:14Speaker 5: I mean, he's coaching for his life. He's coaching for
- 23:18Speaker 5: his future. Every game is a referendum on Mike Louisville,
- 23:21Speaker 5: and they got screwed. Now, your boy Billy thinks that
- 23:24Speaker 5: there's some mass conspiracy to elevate Miami. I was like,
- 23:27Speaker 5: what are you really saying, dog? You really think in
- 23:30Speaker 5: that moment that they're trying to save Miami?
- 23:32Speaker 4: But come on.
- 23:33Speaker 3: Yes.
- 23:33Speaker 2: Well, I mean, Billy's, listen, he's got a conspiracy for everything.
- 23:36Speaker 2: He's got a conspiracy for everything, for life. I mean,
- 23:38Speaker 2: everyone's conspiring against Billy, you know?
- 23:40Speaker 5: I mean, I was just like, yo, man, that's, I mean,
- 23:43Speaker 5: I know you got your little beef with the Canes,
- 23:45Speaker 5: which I still think.
- 23:46Speaker 4: Is weird because you grew up down there. There's no
- 23:48Speaker 4: reason for you to hate. You didn't like Michael Irvin? No, no, no.
- 23:51Speaker 4: You didn't like Andre Johnson?
- 23:52Speaker 2: No, no, no, no. I love the Canes. I actually
- 23:54Speaker 2: grew up in New York. We didn't have a college
- 23:55Speaker 2: football team.
- 23:56Speaker 3: No, Billy Hayes.
- 23:57Speaker 4: Oh, Billy.
- 23:57Speaker 1: Oh, yeah, Billy with the FIU. That's why. Yeah, I mean, that's...
- 24:00Speaker 1: I mean, so?
- 24:01Speaker 5: I mean, there's a bunch of people in Texas that, like,
- 24:04Speaker 5: you know, they went to the University of Houston, but
- 24:06Speaker 5: they root for Texas.
- 24:07Speaker 4: Yes. You know?
- 24:07Speaker 1: Yes, but what Billy's upset about is he actually went
- 24:09Speaker 1: to FIU.
- 24:10Speaker 2: He gets upset at Canes fans because none of them,
- 24:13Speaker 2: and I mean none of them, went to the University
- 24:15Speaker 2: of Miami.
- 24:16Speaker 4: Damn.
- 24:17Speaker 3: Joel, his entire class at FIU would walk through campus
- 24:21Speaker 3: in UM gear.
- 24:21Speaker 2: Yes.
- 24:22Speaker 3: And then UM would play FIU.
- 24:23Speaker 4: Yes.
- 24:24Speaker 3: And they would root for UM over FIU. Yes.
- 24:26Speaker 4: Yes.
- 24:28Speaker 5: I do understand, like, have some respect for yourself. But
- 24:32Speaker 5: I feel like he just takes it a little too far.
- 24:34Speaker 5: I was like, man, but your teams were cool. I
- 24:36Speaker 5: rooted for Miami. I had never even been to Florida
- 24:38Speaker 5: when I was rooting for Miami in the 80s and 90s.
- 24:42Speaker 4: They were cool. He didn't like a cool team. That
- 24:45Speaker 4: I don't get. I don't care how much the other
- 24:46Speaker 4: people were annoying you. No. I hate Texas. But when
- 24:49Speaker 4: Vince Young was there and they were cool, I rooted
- 24:52Speaker 4: for Vince Young. Yes.
- 24:54Speaker 1: I see both sides of it. I do. I really do.
- 24:56Speaker 4: I mean.
- 24:57Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 24:57Speaker 1: All he's saying is just because you're from Miami.
- 25:00Speaker 2: Like, I have a friend who's from Miami, went to
- 25:03Speaker 2: school in Florida, and is still a Canes fan.
- 25:05Speaker 4: You went to Florida.
- 25:07Speaker 5: I mean, man, that Kane shit, man, it's so, it's
- 25:11Speaker 5: all about you, man. I mean, but, you know, Billy, man,
- 25:14Speaker 5: he's a champion pole vaulter.
- 25:16Speaker 4: You know, he bled for his school. I know. So
- 25:18Speaker 4: maybe that's what it is.
- 25:19Speaker 1: That's exactly right. He bled for his school. That's exactly right.
- 25:21Speaker 4: He bled for his school.
- 25:22Speaker 3: Weak-ass blood.
- 25:25Speaker 1: The ringer tailgate.
- 25:26Speaker 2: Check him out wherever you get your podcasts.
- 25:28Speaker 1: Joel, we appreciate you doing this, man. I can't have
- 25:31Speaker 1: a yawn enough. So thank you, man.
- 25:33Speaker 4: Anytime, buddy. Anytime. All right, man.
