- 0:03Speaker 2: Altitude Sports Radio ninety two five Pro Football The Insider.
- 0:08Speaker 3: I've covered the league a little while.
- 0:09Speaker 1: Jeff Legwald too cute.
- 0:12Speaker 3: Let's dial down the cue and just play football.
- 0:15Speaker 2: Brought to you by the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers.
- 0:18Speaker 3: Start with a job and with a career A right,
- 0:20Speaker 3: BDW Local sixty eight.
- 0:22Speaker 1: It's leggy, Yeah, yeah yeah.
- 0:25Speaker 2: On Altitude Sports Radio ninety two five.
- 0:30Speaker 1: Did about the doors, did not know? Yeah, Jeff Legwald
- 0:38Speaker 1: was brought to you by the International Brotherhood of Electrical
- 0:40Speaker 1: Workers IBW Local sixty eight. Start with a job and
- 0:43Speaker 1: with a career. Jeff, Jeff, Jeff, Jeff. Uh. It was
- 0:49Speaker 1: a fun back and forth with you and well I
- 0:51Speaker 1: took it as a fun back and forth, am I?
- 0:53Speaker 1: Am I wrong about that?
- 0:54Speaker 2: Or you know?
- 0:56Speaker 1: Is it all in good fun with you and Sean Payton.
- 1:00Speaker 3: I don't know if he always thinks it's fun, but
- 1:02Speaker 3: it's always a back and forth, that's for sure.
- 1:05Speaker 1: So I didn't think it was anything crazy you were
- 1:08Speaker 1: asking him, You're talking to him about certain I mean,
- 1:10Speaker 1: maybe you can just take us behind that, like what
- 1:12Speaker 1: you were asking where you were going with it and
- 1:15Speaker 1: and what your thoughts are about that situation.
- 1:18Speaker 3: Well, you know, he he just tests talking about injuries
- 1:22Speaker 3: in any fashion, but occasionally he does, so you can't
- 1:27Speaker 3: just leave it. You can't just leave it alone, as
- 1:30Speaker 3: much as he'd like us to, because sometimes he does
- 1:35Speaker 3: talk about injuries when the mood strikes him. So it's
- 1:38Speaker 3: if you hit a day when he doesn't feel like it,
- 1:42Speaker 3: that's what That's what it looks and sounds like on
- 1:45Speaker 3: my end of it. You know that in this I
- 1:49Speaker 3: always say in this business, if you don't want to
- 1:52Speaker 3: splash around once you jump in the pool, you better
- 1:55Speaker 3: just stay home. So you just you just kind of
- 1:57Speaker 3: keep swinging and move on to your next question and
- 2:01Speaker 3: and get going.
- 2:02Speaker 2: Well, what do you what do you know about the injuries? Uh,
- 2:05Speaker 2: it looks like Patri Taan's could be okay, what about Jalil?
- 2:08Speaker 2: What's going on there?
- 2:10Speaker 3: You know, Tyler, I'd be lying if I said we
- 2:13Speaker 3: were in you know, yesterday was just a walk through
- 2:15Speaker 3: and there wasn't much to gauge there. Uh, you know,
- 2:20Speaker 3: he was, he was on the field, he was there.
- 2:24Speaker 3: But I I can't give people an honest assessment of
- 2:27Speaker 3: what he would look like because I don't. I don't
- 2:30Speaker 3: think they ran at all anybody, So no, uh, you know,
- 2:34Speaker 3: so I don't have a good assessment. That's one I
- 2:37Speaker 3: would I would really be looking at get to the
- 2:40Speaker 3: stadium early and be there when they when they bring
- 2:43Speaker 3: those guys out early that work out, to see how
- 2:45Speaker 3: they feel. Well.
- 2:46Speaker 2: Let me let me ask you this, if if there
- 2:48Speaker 2: was an issue there with Julil, do you think that
- 2:51Speaker 2: they're going to go back to Davante? Are they finally
- 2:53Speaker 2: gonna let Odd you Gastiba get get the start or
- 2:56Speaker 2: get the bulk of the carries.
- 2:58Speaker 3: Well, and know, Tyler, you've been around it a long time.
- 3:01Speaker 3: I think the big issue is they're in the gun
- 3:05Speaker 3: so much right now, twice as much as they're under center,
- 3:08Speaker 3: because that's what bo Nicks is more comfortable and does
- 3:13Speaker 3: better looking at coverage when he's in the gun, and
- 3:17Speaker 3: often that's a five man protection. So I think Javante
- 3:22Speaker 3: is getting a lot of those snaps because they want
- 3:25Speaker 3: the better pass protector in there. And I don't think
- 3:29Speaker 3: the decisions being made about running the ball per se,
- 3:33Speaker 3: I think it's being made about what they're in so often.
- 3:37Speaker 3: I mean they're in three wide in the gun twice
- 3:40Speaker 3: as much as at least twice as much as they're
- 3:44Speaker 3: in anything else. So I think this is totally a
- 3:47Speaker 3: pass protection decision, whether they admit it or not.
- 3:51Speaker 4: Hey, Jeff, they two weeks through all they've won games.
- 3:54Speaker 4: The defense have pulled that one out in Cleveland, and
- 3:57Speaker 4: then both the defense late and special teams with what
- 4:01Speaker 4: a couple of those returns by Mims won that game.
- 4:04Speaker 4: When you went back and looked at it, what did
- 4:07Speaker 4: you see and where were the struggles you thought from
- 4:09Speaker 4: the offensive side of the football.
- 4:11Speaker 3: Yeah, Scotty, I just think again, they're they're playing the
- 4:16Speaker 3: same grouping so often right now. You know, they want
- 4:20Speaker 3: to give bow Nicks a clean look at the coverage.
- 4:23Speaker 3: They want them to have that space to work in. Uh,
- 4:27Speaker 3: So they're in the gun, they're in three wide, and
- 4:29Speaker 3: I think the other guys know it as it were,
- 4:32Speaker 3: and they're they're doing what NFL defenses do. They've seen
- 4:37Speaker 3: what what bow likes as a rookie, and they're steadily
- 4:41Speaker 3: whittling away at at taking away some of those things.
- 4:45Speaker 3: And uh, they're they you know, I think the Colts
- 4:50Speaker 3: took a different tack that the Raiders and the Browns
- 4:53Speaker 3: were very aggressive rushing bow Knicks. The Colts chose to
- 4:58Speaker 3: to rush for most to the game and drop seven
- 5:02Speaker 3: and and take that tact with them, and I think
- 5:05Speaker 3: both ways had some success, especially if they can just
- 5:10Speaker 3: rush the passer and not worry about anybody running the
- 5:14Speaker 3: ball or play action or anything. That when the Broncos
- 5:18Speaker 3: had it going a little bit, they were adding play
- 5:21Speaker 3: action and pre snap motion into the mix more and more,
- 5:25Speaker 3: and the last three games, I don't think any of
- 5:29Speaker 3: those defenses have been worried about the Broncos running the
- 5:33Speaker 3: ball at all. They're just they're going after the rookie
- 5:35Speaker 3: quarterback and trying to make his life difficult, and I
- 5:39Speaker 3: think they've had some success doing it.
- 5:42Speaker 2: Jeff, what do you make about this Chargers team? Just
- 5:45Speaker 2: got spanked this weekend by Tampa Bay. Statistically it doesn't
- 5:50Speaker 2: look like Justin Herbert's having a fantastic year, but we
- 5:53Speaker 2: all know he's dangerous. QB. What are your thoughts on
- 5:55Speaker 2: this team?
- 5:57Speaker 3: So I just think, you know, looking I just charged
- 6:00Speaker 3: their last game a couple of times and went back
- 6:02Speaker 3: through it, and he had one of those games where
- 6:05Speaker 3: his you know, the protection wasn't very good and his
- 6:08Speaker 3: mechanics just went south. I mean, he's thrown off his
- 6:12Speaker 3: back foot, he's you know, he's thrown across his body
- 6:16Speaker 3: on the run, and you know he's just not he
- 6:20Speaker 3: just was not accurate in that game because he was
- 6:22Speaker 3: under duress. Uh, And they didn't really seem to have
- 6:26Speaker 3: an answer for it. You know, they've they've sort of
- 6:29Speaker 3: lived on the fast start and then the defense is
- 6:33Speaker 3: good enough to hang on to make those early points,
- 6:39Speaker 3: you know, hold up the rest of the way, and
- 6:41Speaker 3: the games where they've struggled, they've not been able to
- 6:45Speaker 3: do those things. But I've noticed when this year, I
- 6:50Speaker 3: don't think he's you know, my gut is he's got
- 6:53Speaker 3: some kind of health issue or he doesn't steel one
- 6:55Speaker 3: hundred percent because his movement looks a little off to me.
- 6:59Speaker 3: Now that's anecdotal, and maybe I'm just wrong, but I've
- 7:05Speaker 3: spent an awful lot of time looking at this game
- 7:08Speaker 3: film before the draft and since he's been in the league,
- 7:11Speaker 3: and he just looks a little off to me, especially
- 7:14Speaker 3: in the footwork department. And we've seen a bow nick
- 7:17Speaker 3: with bow knicks as well. When the accuracy goes, you
- 7:21Speaker 3: can just look at the feet and see why.
- 7:25Speaker 4: Next three games Herbert, Burrows and Mahomes. If everything plays
- 7:29Speaker 4: out the way they could or should, that'd beans said.
- 7:33Speaker 4: The defenses look pretty good. How do you see them
- 7:36Speaker 4: going against three of the better quarterbacks in the league.
- 7:40Speaker 3: No, Scotty, it's always going to be you know, what
- 7:43Speaker 3: are they going to do with Sir Tan against those guys,
- 7:45Speaker 3: especially the Bengals. You know, the Bengals sort of have
- 7:47Speaker 3: more high end weapons, you know, at receiver, so giving
- 7:55Speaker 3: up Sir Tan's body at work is a little more difficult.
- 7:58Speaker 4: You know.
- 7:58Speaker 3: With the Chiefs they put him on Hopkins a lot,
- 8:01Speaker 3: and with the Chargers they just sort of spot matched
- 8:05Speaker 3: him up when they felt like it. You know, I
- 8:07Speaker 3: think the Bengals game is really the the tough one
- 8:12Speaker 3: because they've been so aggressive rushing the passer and and
- 8:16Speaker 3: teams blitzen Burrow this year have put some put some
- 8:20Speaker 3: hits on it. He's taken punishment, but he has made
- 8:23Speaker 3: them pay, you know, dearly. So I think in terms
- 8:27Speaker 3: of coverages, I think the Bengal game is the toughest riddle.
- 8:31Speaker 3: Uh and then you know Tomorrow's game, I think that
- 8:34Speaker 3: they've got to be as physical as they've done all season.
- 8:39Speaker 3: And they can't, you know, they especially early that you know,
- 8:42Speaker 3: they've responded twice in the second half of games, but
- 8:46Speaker 3: they can't have those early run fit problems you know
- 8:50Speaker 3: they've had. And if you do that against the Chargers,
- 8:54Speaker 3: you're sort of playing into their hands. You give them
- 8:56Speaker 3: that early lead and then they can make it hold up.
- 8:59Speaker 1: But the Chargers haven't been very dynamic this year, Jeff.
- 9:01Speaker 1: For some reason. They've got talent, but they haven't been
- 9:05Speaker 1: able to put it all together. Why not?
- 9:09Speaker 3: You know, I think they really hoped Johnson would be
- 9:12Speaker 3: the big time down the field receiver, consistent you know,
- 9:16Speaker 3: take the lid off kind of a player. He hasn't
- 9:19Speaker 3: always been that, you know, hasn't been consistent catching the ball, uh,
- 9:23Speaker 3: and he doesn't really get a ton of separation for
- 9:27Speaker 3: the guy with you know, that kind of speed and athleticism.
- 9:30Speaker 3: So it's hard to figure. But I think teams have
- 9:33Speaker 3: sort of, you know, been able to squeeze the the
- 9:37Speaker 3: line of scrimmage on them and that that makes it
- 9:39Speaker 3: hard to have those dynamic plays. You know, they're keeping
- 9:42Speaker 3: everything in front of them and you know McConkie will
- 9:45Speaker 3: get some catch and run things through the intermediate areas
- 9:48Speaker 3: and have been good with that, but they don't have
- 9:52Speaker 3: the fear factor going and it's sort of hard to
- 9:56Speaker 3: have those big plays down the field when you don't.
- 10:00Speaker 3: You know, the Broncos have lapsed into that too. They
- 10:02Speaker 3: still only have one completion this year over fifty yards.
- 10:05Speaker 3: And when we think of dynamic offenses in the league,
- 10:09Speaker 3: I think we think of those, you know, sort of
- 10:11Speaker 3: those half field plays that really, you know, get your attention.
- 10:16Speaker 1: Yeah, I wouldn't say the Broncos are that dynamic offensively either.
- 10:19Speaker 1: I think Marvin Mims is gonna win another vote in
- 10:22Speaker 1: the Pro Bowl. I think easy as a punt returner
- 10:26Speaker 1: Nick Benito, if he doesn't win Defensive Player of the Year, Legie,
- 10:29Speaker 1: I mean, he's in the conversation. I mean he's making
- 10:32Speaker 1: game changing plays, not just good plays, game changing plays
- 10:37Speaker 1: and that kind of helps, doesn't it. With the offensive.
- 10:39Speaker 1: The offense just kind of middling, especially with what zero
- 10:42Speaker 1: running game, and the Broman's running game is pathetic at
- 10:45Speaker 1: this point, right, Jeff.
- 10:46Speaker 3: Yeah, it's pretty ornamental. As I say, it's very much
- 10:51Speaker 3: Parsley on the plate, you know. And you know, the
- 10:55Speaker 3: defensive scored five touchdowns and two safeties. That's an awful
- 10:58Speaker 3: lot of points from non offense. And you know, and
- 11:03Speaker 3: I think you know, if you talk I've said this,
- 11:06Speaker 3: if he talked to football people that you know, the
- 11:09Speaker 3: GMS and the pro personnel guys, passer Tan is the
- 11:13Speaker 3: defensive player of the year. But he just he just
- 11:16Speaker 3: may not get the love because what he does best
- 11:22Speaker 3: is he prevents the ball from ever arriving, so he
- 11:26Speaker 3: doesn't get to you know, even though you know he
- 11:29Speaker 3: he's got the career having interceptions already. But I'm just
- 11:32Speaker 3: saying his talent is so somewhat camouflaged because when you know,
- 11:38Speaker 3: he's taken the best receivers in the league and not
- 11:42Speaker 3: allowed the ball to get to them, and that's it's
- 11:44Speaker 3: hard to sort of get the voters to notice them.
- 11:47Speaker 1: That was funny. That was like what Prime said about
- 11:49Speaker 1: Travis Hunter. Remember that when you didn't gets like, you know,
- 11:53Speaker 1: we don't get credit for that.
- 11:55Speaker 3: I'm fascinated for how people if you're not even a finalist,
- 11:59Speaker 3: that means people left you offstage of their ballots.
- 12:02Speaker 2: Crazy.
- 12:03Speaker 3: I'm intrigued to know how you could even think that way.
- 12:06Speaker 1: But anyway, all right, save travels.
- 12:09Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, yep, Jeff I appreciate your question.
- 12:12Speaker 1: We appreciate it, Jeff. We'll talk talk to you later
- 12:15Speaker 1: and enjoy Los Angeles.
- 12:17Speaker 3: He did not appreciate the questions.
- 12:19Speaker 1: Well we we. I mean, it's fun for us, but
- 12:21Speaker 1: you know it's a.
- 12:23Speaker 4: But he kissed up later on your next question. Good questions.
- 12:27Speaker 1: Oh, he did give you the good He did give you.
- 12:29Speaker 2: The good question, France. That's all that, right, right, right?
- 12:32Speaker 1: Oh sorry, Jeff, No great question. Yeah, one of those.
- 12:36Speaker 3: We change olive branches and we move on.
- 12:38Speaker 1: That's right, all right, Jeff. We'll talk to you later.
- 12:41Speaker 1: Enjoy los Angeles. We'll see it. Thank you, Jeff Legwald.
