- 0:05Have we fallen out of love with Valentine's Day?
- 0:09Welcome to Mark and Pete. Yes, today we're thinking about
- 0:12Valentine's Day and we're asking this question, are we still
- 0:16capable of love or have we replaced it with algorithms and
- 0:21emotional cowardice? Yes, with this is Mark and Pete,
- 0:26two blokes with half an opinion. Now here's our first thought.
- 0:31The eternal love triangle when romance becomes hard to find.
- 0:36Don't be sad or sensitively sigh, just swoon to where love
- 0:41is blind and for for me, myself and I.
- 0:46Yes. If nobody's going to fall in
- 0:49love with you, fall in love with yourself, why not send yourself
- 0:52a little little card or maybe a single rose?
- 0:57Mr. Pete, I would say that in my opinion, when it comes to
- 1:00Valentine's Day, maybe we're sort of falling out of love with
- 1:04this particular occasion. What say you about this?
- 1:08I've got my thoughts, but I'd be keen to get your.
- 1:11Perspective. Yeah.
- 1:14Well, I think that you're right. This is just an observable fact.
- 1:17It used to be the Valentine's Day stuff was everywhere.
- 1:22Yeah, it was great for the card industry and I guess for
- 1:26restaurants and such like, because Valentine's Day was big.
- 1:31When you and I were little boys at school, the we found that
- 1:37there there was a sort of box put there in the school same the
- 1:42same as at Christmas for for Christmas cards for people to
- 1:45exchange Valentine's cards. With.
- 1:48Each other at school and so it was just it just took over.
- 1:52I mean the number you must have cars you must have sent to
- 1:54yourself Mark, because there can't be any other reason for
- 1:57you receiving them. But you know, the the this is
- 2:00this has has gradually died out a little bit.
- 2:05I don't think it's you know, it's St.
- 2:07Valentine. I don't think it's to do with
- 2:09anything that's anti religious because it's not really much to
- 2:12do with the real St. Valentine anyway.
- 2:16So I don't, I don't see that that it's that connection.
- 2:18It's it's something to do with a, a growing cynicism towards
- 2:26such performative acts of romance.
- 2:29That's what I think, yes. Well, I can understand now just
- 2:32to sort of qualify that as is no surprise that I get many
- 2:37complaints from the Postal Service because the post workers
- 2:42always are have back breaking work just just trying to get
- 2:46their Valentine's cards to me. Now I do apologise, but that's
- 2:50the way of the world folks. But All in all seriousness, yes,
- 2:54I think that we have fallen out of love of the actual season.
- 2:58And I think in some ways it is a little bit reflective of the
- 3:01economy, the state of the nation.
- 3:04I do think also that maybe people find that it's it's
- 3:09expensive, but actually really is it really getting to what
- 3:13people want? Now, the idea that you would
- 3:16maybe send an anonymous card is is mildly amusing, But I think
- 3:20when it comes to, you know, a gesture to your loved one, it
- 3:25shouldn't really be just simply to one day in the year, should
- 3:28it? It shouldn't be throughout the
- 3:31whole year. So in some ways you could sort
- 3:34of argue, well, you know, you know, with the the High Street,
- 3:37you know, diminishing and maybe some not so many, you know, card
- 3:41companies around, I know you can buy them online, but maybe
- 3:45people have just chosen to sort of fall in love in different
- 3:47ways. Now, you mentioned something
- 3:49which I thought was really a big challenge to this, which is
- 3:52around the online type of dating.
- 3:55A lot of people do have, there is a peak, interestingly, of not
- 4:00so much on the purchasing of cards, but the uplift of those
- 4:03who tend to go on apps, those dating apps and those who may
- 4:08want to sort of go out with somebody at, you know, on the
- 4:11February. Valentine's Day is, is something
- 4:14that you know, you, you shouldn't discourage.
- 4:16But I, I, I personally feel that maybe we should sort of rethink
- 4:22the event. Do you think that maybe
- 4:25Valentine's Day should be more than one day in the year?
- 4:29Because if you want to sort of get to know somebody, surely it
- 4:32shouldn't just be at the February period.
- 4:34It should be at all times in the year.
- 4:36Maybe we should have a Valentine's Day every month.
- 4:40Why not? What do you think?
- 4:43Yeah, there may be something in that.
- 4:44Yeah. And it could be a slightly
- 4:45different. I'm trying.
- 4:46To boost the retail side here. Yeah, different types.
- 4:50Yes, I think. Yeah, I think there could be
- 4:52something in that because I think we need to rekindle.
- 4:54This is what I think, Mark. I know that it's not normally
- 4:57that sort this that sort of show that we have run here, but I
- 5:00think let's just talk about sex. People wouldn't to be having sex
- 5:06with each other. It's about the an instruction
- 5:08from Mark and Pete. If you, if someone else, why did
- 5:11you have sex? Say, look, I listened to this
- 5:13podcast and they told me to do it.
- 5:15And that's absolutely true. We need, particularly in Western
- 5:18countries where there's population decline, we need to
- 5:21get at it. We need to start producing
- 5:23children. Now.
- 5:24I, I've got an actual study on this.
- 5:26There's an excellent journal which I, I hope they will all
- 5:30subscribe to called the Journal of Sex.
- 5:33It did a study, quite a widespread study on sexual
- 5:37activities in young adults up up to up to up to 2019 and found a
- 5:43huge decline in sexual activity, especially for men.
- 5:47And a more recent analysis, this is 24, found that this is from
- 5:52the US, not from Britain. Sexual activity amongst US
- 5:56adults aimed aged 18 to 64. So Mark, we're both in that age,
- 6:00age, age foul from 55% in 1990 to 37% in 2024.
- 6:07What I'm saying is part of the reason for Valentine's is to
- 6:12have sex. I mean, I mean, obviously I'm
- 6:13talking about when you've fallen in love and had a romance and
- 6:17courting and got married. Obviously that's what I'm
- 6:19meaning. But people are just aren't doing
- 6:21it. They people in the parlance just
- 6:24aren't doing it. And we need now there are
- 6:28various reasons for that, which you which is, I suppose, the
- 6:34prevalence of pornography, people getting a fix from that
- 6:38people getting, you know, persuaded that you that other
- 6:44things are better than sex, especially for men, because
- 6:48actual sex with a woman. I mean, because of it's so
- 6:51complicated. And if things fall foul, it's
- 6:54the man that gets hammered with alimony and that sort of thing.
- 6:57So why certainly why get married?
- 6:59Whatever those are a couple of the reasons to the put forward.
- 7:02But whatever the reasons, we need to be having more sex.
- 7:07So yeah, I, I agree with you that some sort of Valentine's
- 7:11promotion and not in a cynical sense.
- 7:13I don't mean just sexual activity, of course.
- 7:16I mean full romance, falling in love, married, creating a home
- 7:20together. That's what I mean by sex,
- 7:22proper sex where it's within a loving, a loving relationship
- 7:26and it's going to be in most cases, producing children.
- 7:30It's a family, it's a binding activity.
- 7:33And yet we're not doing it. So Valentine's Day seems a bit
- 7:37pointless if that's not your aim.
- 7:39Well, let me take it in a slightly different direction,
- 7:42which is something more commercial, but it does sort of
- 7:45relate to bringing people together to get to know one
- 7:48another and promoting the principle of romance.
- 7:50Now a bookshop that claims to be the largest in Europe,
- 7:54specialising in adult only romance novels.
- 7:58And this is called the Spicy Librarian and it's it's actually
- 8:03based in Leamington Spa. But the principle of this is it
- 8:07has romance genres which bring people together.
- 8:11The idea is that it's a safe place for people to read and
- 8:15relax about, you know, sort of romance and getting to know one
- 8:19another. Now this comes back to my idea.
- 8:21Well, this is great. What else can you do?
- 8:24Well, the idea behind the store as well is that you can hold
- 8:27events so effectively people can come and meet, yes.
- 8:31So maybe the principle of Valentine's Day couldn't be just
- 8:35that. It's just one, you know,
- 8:37anonymous card that happens to come in from Mr. Pete.
- 8:42Yeah. Although he won't admit that,
- 8:45but he, he does it quite a lot. But the fact is, is that that
- 8:49might be a good way. So it's effectively that you
- 8:51have all these different shops and events all around the, the,
- 8:55the country, all the world, folks, yes, let's spread love
- 8:58wherever we can because, you know, it is true that we seem to
- 9:02be falling out of love with one another and, and we need
- 9:05something a little bit more positive.
- 9:06So what say you about the idea of sort of spicing up romance on
- 9:11the High Street in in the books and.
- 9:13And I think spicing up romance, Yeah.
- 9:16And getting some. Yeah.
- 9:17And getting getting romance back in the in the consciousness in.
- 9:24I mean, even romantic films aren't as romantic as before.
- 9:27You see, when I said it's important that you get it, be
- 9:30getting mind. Sex is not the mechanical act.
- 9:34That's part of it. It's not the physical act.
- 9:37I don't know why I said mechanical.
- 9:38That's an entirely different story.
- 9:40It's not the physical act that's part of it.
- 9:43It's all the the romance, the Valentine's Day romance.
- 9:46So if it's replaced with something that's sordid or
- 9:49demeaning, which is it? Which for which read the
- 9:53Hollywood depiction of sex is then amplified in in media and
- 9:57social media. Then you're going to have a a
- 10:00weaker view of sex. Yeah, let's get the romance.
- 10:02Let's get it spicy. Let's get it.
- 10:04Let's get it so that people fall in love with each other again.
- 10:07Now in the Bible it's interesting.
- 10:09This is one of the signs that that things are falling apart
- 10:13what people sometimes call the end times.
- 10:16I like to think of it more in terms of the breakdown of
- 10:19society and and civilization. Second Timothy 3 verses 1 to 4
- 10:24has this little piece about this where it says people will become
- 10:29lovers of themselves without natural affection, and we need
- 10:34to reverse that or yeah, we're heading into a steady decline,
- 10:37if not worse. Well, I agree.
- 10:40So listeners, if for some reason that maybe you haven't received
- 10:44your card, maybe you're feeling that you're not loved, possibly
- 10:48it is, is that you're looking for opportunities to meet
- 10:50people. Well, the one thing that we can
- 10:52safely say, whatever it is Valentine's Day or throughout
- 10:56the year, everyone loves the Marc and Pete show.
- 11:01Amen.
