- 0:02Hello everyone. Today we're in the temple of
- 0:05Poseidon and we're going to have AQ and A.
- 0:09I'm undercover and for sure you don't recognize me.
- 0:11And this is my good friend and we're here to answer your
- 0:15questions. So without further ado, let's do
- 0:18it. OK, why don't why don't you read
- 0:20them to be easier with your voice?
- 0:22Sure. OK.
- 0:24So one question that we have is, is that, and I'll read it here,
- 0:34does Isaiah 53 refer to the Christian Messiah?
- 0:37Since there are different interpretations of these verses,
- 0:39I'm interested in learning more about how they are understood
- 0:42from your point of view. The anointed 1 suffers and dies
- 0:46from the sins of many, according to this chapter.
- 0:48A quote from verse 4. Surely it took up our pain and
- 0:50bore our suffering. Yet we consider him punished by
- 0:53God, stricken by him, and afflicted.
- 0:55Verse 5. He's prayers for our
- 0:56transgressions. He was crushed for our
- 0:58iniquities. The punishment that brought us
- 0:59peace was on him, and by his wounds we are healed.
- 1:03So I'll begin by answering this question by saying that prophecy
- 1:07is a very difficult thing. So for example, my mom and he
- 1:10says in his introduction to God to the perplex the morning of
- 1:13him that when Moshe or Moses gives a prophecy over, it's as
- 1:20if someone walks into a field in the middle of the day.
- 1:22Everything's really clear like the sun is right now.
- 1:25You can clearly see the winds behind me.
- 1:26You can clearly see me. He Blues the iron includes
- 1:28everything. But when one of the minor
- 1:32prophets with later prophets into the field, it's like a
- 1:35crack of lightning and becoming a hamam are just like coals that
- 1:40are very faintly glowing. So to fully understand what
- 1:43Isaiah is saying is going to be very, very, very difficult.
- 1:46That's number one. Number 2 is that I think that if
- 1:51you look at the messianic age that we're supposed to, some
- 1:53would be in after the coming of the Messiah, I don't really see
- 1:57that. I don't see swords being stabbed
- 2:01into plowshares. In fact, I see swords being
- 2:04stabbed into innocent people during the Crusades.
- 2:06So there's a lot missing from that.
- 2:08And furthermore, if we're going to save the Messiah, someone
- 2:11that's suffered and has been pierced.
- 2:15So I had surgery, I had back surgery once.
- 2:19I have certainly suffered. Perhaps I'm the Messiah.
- 2:20I don't really think I am. So it's just not enough in order
- 2:24to establish who the Messiah is. Looking at this chapter, I'm
- 2:28really not convinced that Isaiah 53 is referring to Jesus as the
- 2:33Messiah. What do you think, Aaron?
- 2:35Well, just flowing from that thought, you know, there's,
- 2:38there's a lot of suffering and there's a lot of death in the
- 2:40world and suffering and death makes you human, doesn't
- 2:47necessarily make you or give you a particular purpose, but it
- 2:51makes you human, you know, and I think that's a place to start in
- 2:55terms of looking at interpreting what this, what this means.
- 2:57And, and it's like you said, it's very difficult to attribute
- 3:01meaning and understanding to, to prophecies.
- 3:04We, we, we weren't there and we weren't given the code to unlock
- 3:07it. That's right.
- 3:09And it's, it's a good question just to ask, well, then what are
- 3:13we supposed to do with this? Right.
- 3:16We're not given the code to unlock these, but but it's but
- 3:20we're still meant to hold on to them, you know, and it is a
- 3:25difficult question to answer. What are we supposed to do with
- 3:27these prophecies? I almost wonder if if it's part
- 3:32of a of a bigger plan and God's almost like dangling a carrot
- 3:37and saying you're going to find out what this means one day when
- 3:42the time is right. And it's going to be more
- 3:45incredible than if I hadn't given you this thing that
- 3:48tantalized you and made you wonder for so long.
- 3:51It's going to be even greater and it's finally revealed than
- 3:56if I had never given you that in the first place.
- 3:58Absolutely. I completely agree.
- 4:00And furthermore, I would say that just because we have
- 4:05something we don't fully understand doesn't mean that we
- 4:07don't gain greatly from it even in the moment.
- 4:09The Torah is infinite and has a lot to offer us.
- 4:12So having those passages are really critical in our faith.
- 4:16Let's do another question. So the next question is there is
- 4:23a passage in Hagai chapter 2 verse 9 where Hagai is and at
- 4:30least in the question describing the second temple that it was
- 4:32going to be longer and greater in its glory than the first
- 4:34temple and that there would be peace.
- 4:38But how is this so? We noted during the second
- 4:40temple era, no peace is granted and only evil decrees followed.
- 4:43We have a dilemma since the guy spoke the words of the Avisner
- 4:46God directly and it was a positive prophecy of priests and
- 4:50we all know the positive prophecies have to come true,
- 4:53right? It would appear to be so.
- 4:55This is a good question. So clearly from the Talmud we
- 4:59know that even though the Pasuk, the verse is talking about the
- 5:04base and Mikisha her own the last one.
- 5:07So we know that ravaged schmo both discussed within the
- 5:10framework of the Second Temple. So we're not going to have much
- 5:12luck there saying that it's talking about the Third Temple,
- 5:15at least not easily. And by Third Temple, I mean last
- 5:17Temple, yeah, the final one. I would say though, that if we
- 5:22are talking about, if we're going to talk about the Second
- 5:27Temple, then I would say indeed, it did last longer.
- 5:31It wasn't indeed greater. And in terms of everlasting
- 5:33peace, what is 1 of Hashem's name?
- 5:36You should know it because it's your last one.
- 5:38Show them peace. And what is responsible for that
- 5:41peace. I think Torah, we've created one
- 5:45of the most amazing. It's not really a creation is
- 5:49the wrong word, but we are, we are owners of the Torah.
- 5:54And what that allows us to do is something incredible.
- 5:58I had a professor once, philosophy professor, and on the
- 6:01last day of class, she asked a whole bunch of questions about
- 6:04Jews, but she didn't understand. So one of the most is like, I
- 6:07don't understand. I walked past her study hall,
- 6:09what we call Bates Madrich, and people are arguing with each
- 6:12other and yelling at each other. They're yelling at each other
- 6:15and arguing with each other and they look like they're about to
- 6:18kill each other because they're arguing over Bible study.
- 6:21And then a few minutes later they just say, OK, great.
- 6:25Yeah, I don't know any other culture that that does that.
- 6:29Torah has an amazing way of being fervently dedicated and
- 6:33running after Hashem after the war.
- 6:36So I don't think there's a bigger solemn on that.
- 6:38And the second base of Memphis is the time when we had Torah
- 6:41being propagated to the entire nation.
- 6:43The first simple period, not so much.
- 6:45So it was more about that, that fervor, that feeling, that
- 6:49emotion and prophecy. But it wasn't so much it wasn't
- 6:52so much of the Torah in its in its glory.
- 6:54It's a. Different.
- 6:55Face. Exactly.
- 6:56It's a totally different face. So that's how to answer that
- 6:58question. You have anything to add?
- 7:00Well. Sure.
- 7:00I can add on to that just kind of looking more into into the
- 7:04verse itself and into the time of discussion on that verse like
- 7:08like you, like you referenced, they're both Rob and Schmo.
- 7:12I'll talk about this verse. What does it mean that this
- 7:16second temple or this later temple was greater than the
- 7:19first one? Like what is the what is the
- 7:22word great mean in this context? And the two opinions that are
- 7:25given are that it was the location itself, the building
- 7:29itself was greater, or the number of years that it existed
- 7:33was greater. Neither of them is talking about
- 7:36the essence of the Bethea Mikdash or the, the holiness of
- 7:40the Bethea Mikdash or the, the permeation of God's Spirit in
- 7:43the Bethea Mikdash. At least the shot of the Gemara
- 7:46there, That's not what they're what they're referring to.
- 7:48So now their opinion is there. And so I, I would kind of go
- 7:51back to the original question. The premise of the original of
- 7:53the original question seems to be how, how can we understand
- 7:57this verse if the, if we understand it to mean that the
- 8:02essence of the second base of Megdesh was greater than the
- 8:05first, which we know in reality it was not.
- 8:07There's no way it was, it was greater.
- 8:09There were so many things that were missing from it, and
- 8:12they're enumerated in in the Khaza.
- 8:15So I would say, looking at the Gemara, you see that they're not
- 8:18even talking about the essence. So that that's the first thing
- 8:20that I would say. And the second thing that I
- 8:22would say on still at that level is that it's not always clear
- 8:28what peace means, right? Is peace everlasting peace?
- 8:32Is it a temporary peace? Is it a relative peace?
- 8:35Is it more peaceful than it was when we were in the Babylonian
- 8:38exile? Maybe.
- 8:40Yeah, I think arguably it was meaning arguably there was more
- 8:43peace during the second temple period than when we were exiled
- 8:46and we didn't have a temple, right.
- 8:50And in the verse, in the shadow of the verse, it doesn't say
- 8:53everlasting peace. It says I'll give it peace.
- 8:55I will give peace to that time, to that, to that, to that era,
- 8:59to that temple on another level because you because often often
- 9:05prophecy is interpreted on 2 levels on like the contemporary
- 9:09level. And I've had an end of days.
- 9:12Well, Akarisa Yeoman. So for example, a lot of a lot
- 9:16of a lot of prophecies about, for example, King Khiskiyahu in
- 9:20Yeshaya, right? Contemporaneously it's about
- 9:25King Khiskiyo. But there's also an angle of
- 9:29maybe this is the final, also the final Redeemer.
- 9:33I think you can do the same thing here.
- 9:35And going back to the lashon of Akharon, it it's not the, the,
- 9:38the, the language in the verse isn't this second temple is
- 9:41greater. It's this final temple is
- 9:45greater. Akharon almost always means
- 9:47final ultimate, the last one, right?
- 9:51So on a higher level, or on a on a level that's more zoomed out
- 9:56to the end of days, we might interpret this exact same verse,
- 10:00which the Gemara doesn't do. But we might interpret this
- 10:03exact same verse as talking about the final one, which will
- 10:06be greater in all ways, and it will have everlasting peace.
- 10:14Holy words, good points. Let's do a couple more.
- 10:18Unfortunately, amongst many communities have children that
- 10:22go off the Derek assuming that such a thing has to happen.
- 10:26Is a better that that happens in America or in Israel?
- 10:31I think this one's an easy 1. The Talmud in Suvas tells us
- 10:36that someone who lives in a city full of Jews outside of artsy
- 10:42straw is doing the wrong thing if they have the opportunity to
- 10:46live in a town in artsy straws full of pagans right now.
- 10:52It's pagans then. It's not like pagans now where
- 10:55Rabbi Dorfman and Sean can come over and go to some ruins and
- 10:58bring some Torah and light to the world.
- 11:00I mean Pagan pagans. There's a tremendous importance
- 11:04to heir to Shaw Avira, Dad, the song Markham, the air makes one
- 11:08wise. It's God's house.
- 11:11The whole land is his house, right?
- 11:13The access to the Torah, the special mitzvahs, the special
- 11:15commandments that we have that are tied to the land, the fact
- 11:19that Hazel tell us that just by walking on the stones our sins
- 11:22can be forgiven. There's so much religious
- 11:25significance. One doesn't have a God outside
- 11:27of Eros Israel that even says that.
- 11:29That's right, that's right. The Kumar does say that for
- 11:33religious or I shouldn't say religious, but for deep
- 11:35spiritual reasons, the answer is clear, definitely to be an Eros
- 11:41Israel. On a more practical level or a
- 11:45little far more easier to understand, let's say is is that
- 11:50if you're an artist song you fall off of there, you're
- 11:52probably marrying a Jew, right? If you're hungry, you're
- 11:56probably going to eat something kosher, right?
- 11:58Because there's buffers, right? A lot of buffers.
- 12:01Right. And if you're sitting on a bus,
- 12:04the person next to you may indeed be learning to.
- 12:06So I mean even the school systems, I mean, I, I, I
- 12:09remember it was such a beautiful moment.
- 12:11I was in Tel Aviv years ago. And so on the bus, there's a
- 12:15rule that you have to stand up for your elders, allow them to
- 12:18set, which I'm sure almost every country has.
- 12:20So the announcer, the announcer on the buses said in a very
- 12:25deep, impressive voice, lift news about Takum.
- 12:27It was exactly like that, by the way.
- 12:29And that's the pasta, right? So I think I think that that
- 12:32makes it, that makes it quite clear, in my humble opinion.
- 12:37OK. And Shabbos Makata of Pincus
- 12:39thinks about how regarding the food aspect of owning Shabbos,
- 12:42it's not like during the week and we prepare feast for Hashem
- 12:47and that Yosur Vyosur Tanak is a greater mitzvah for Onic Chavez.
- 12:51But one is Onic Chavez a beautiful mitzvah, and one does
- 12:55it become gluttony. I think that everything that we
- 12:59do in this world is supposed to be forgotten.
- 13:01And the same is true for what you're doing on Jabbas.
- 13:04The second that you're adding another piece of cake, even
- 13:08though your wife's watching you and wagging a finger shouldn't
- 13:10either Everyone listen to your wife?
- 13:13OK, but when you do it for yourself, on a more serious
- 13:16note, and you're not doing it for God, that's gotten it.
- 13:18Doesn't have to be a feel of God, doesn't have to be a
- 13:20disgusting amount of eating to read the wrong thing.
- 13:23If you're forgetting God in that moment when you're beautifying
- 13:25something, just know that you're not doing it for Him.
- 13:29Yeah, and, and I could be wrong, so take this next one with a
- 13:33grain of salt, but I, I, I wish I would have checked this.
- 13:36I think there's a there's a language of own egg having
- 13:40something to do with gun aid. I could be wrong.
- 13:43Even Ghan Eden is is delight, right?
- 13:45So it could be that there's a connection with that.
- 13:48If we roll with that, then Ghan Eden is, is a structure, right?
- 13:54It, it, there's, there are parameters around Ghan Eden, the
- 13:57lighting within parameters. And I think that's what Shabbat
- 14:02is all about. There are parameters to Shabbat
- 14:04and you're supposed to delight within those parameters.
- 14:07So if you're not grounded in what those are, you're
- 14:10definitely going to coincide glutton.
- 14:12All right. If you're grounded in the
- 14:14parameters and you know why you're doing what you're doing,
- 14:17because we're in a relationship with God, he rests, we rest, we
- 14:20all just want to jam together, then you're probably going to be
- 14:23OK. So it's I think it requires a
- 14:25little bit of a of a reckoning of a phegebon to determine what,
- 14:30where the lines. Absolutely.
- 14:32Let's do two more. Someone had a concern around the
- 14:38prophecy in denial 9. So in denial or Daniel 9.
- 14:41Many Christians contend that the prophetic timeline outlined in
- 14:44this chapter points directly to the rival of their Messiah,
- 14:47often supporting their position through chronological
- 14:49calculations and historical timelines.
- 14:52How would I respond to the argument #1 Again, that's what I
- 14:55was saying before. Prophecy is a really difficult
- 14:57thing to fully understand. I'm not a prophet.
- 15:00Daniel was a prophet, right? Let's look at the Simon he
- 15:04gives. He's talking about weeks.
- 15:08If you do the simple calculation that he's talking about, we're
- 15:11talking so much more before Jesus start walking around.
- 15:14OK, There was not 70 weeks between Cyrus announcing that
- 15:17the basement is going to be rebuilt and then Jesus started
- 15:20walking around. So we have major problems right
- 15:21away. But again, deep esoteric
- 15:25discussions about the coming of Messiah is a complex thing.
- 15:30We don't really know what it means.
- 15:32So the answer in my humble opinion is kind of what we said
- 15:34before, which is we can't fully understand it.
- 15:37Like I think what you said I'll steal is that we're going to
- 15:40understand the end of days is just offer us something even
- 15:44right now before the end of days come when we have more to run.
- 15:47There is more what to talk about, but also in a very basic
- 15:50level doesn't even fit at least in Isaiah 53.
- 15:53It's like super, super basic and rudimentary.
- 15:55So obviously just can't be that. But at least at least Jesus
- 15:58didn't get pierced and at least he didn't suffer.
- 16:00OK, so. It's like to correspond to the
- 16:03to the prophecy. Exactly.
- 16:05This one we got, we got 70 weeks and they're just like, they're
- 16:07just completely off. And there's no reference point
- 16:10as to when, what, what these numbers mean.
- 16:14Does week mean a literal week? Does it mean a year?
- 16:16Does it? I'm sorry, like 7 years, for
- 16:18example. I was talking days as days, days
- 16:20as years, centuries. There's there's no code.
- 16:23There's no what's the word? Cipher?
- 16:27There's no cipher. Good word or code to the cipher,
- 16:30Yeah. Last question I was asked, what
- 16:36is my outlook on the new deal between Iran and the US?
- 16:45This is my opinion. I think that we have to respect
- 16:50cultures for what they are. If someone were to sit down with
- 16:56one of the most powerful leading rabbis of the past 50 years are
- 17:00behind Kanyevski and said, listen, how much money is it
- 17:05going to take for you to stop keeping the Sabbath?
- 17:09I don't think it's going to make a deal.
- 17:11And if you did, I don't think you should believe it.
- 17:15We're sitting down at the table with the people that they just
- 17:19hate the Western world. So you only got two options.
- 17:22You either mow the lawn, which you have to do every once in a
- 17:25while, or we stop teaching kids to hate us and if we have hate
- 17:31with us for. Our kids, we make sure we deal
- 17:33with that, too. That's right, But we don't hate
- 17:34them. So to me, the deal is saving
- 17:39face at best. I don't really think it makes
- 17:43any sense. I think it only makes us lose.
- 17:46If the goal is to mow the lawn, we should mow the lawn until we
- 17:50feel that it's necessary to buy us another decade.
- 17:53And if it's to get rid of that hate, then we had a topple that
- 17:55regime. So in my humble opinion, I think
- 17:57that this deal is predicated off the idea that either a Iranians
- 18:00are Westerners and they're going to honor a complete different
- 18:04orientation now in the world, which is not true, or it's just
- 18:07a safe face, in which case, OK, a safe face, a CNN.
- 18:14Yeah, I think there's, there's something to what you said, I
- 18:18think. I think I wonder about the the,
- 18:22the approach of mowing the lawn both practically and
- 18:29spiritually. I think it's a very short term,
- 18:34very limited vision approach. And so I think in in the big
- 18:40picture, especially in our relationship with God, that
- 18:43can't be the solution. What the solution looks like
- 18:47perhaps is yet to be seen, but but it can't be upkeep of the
- 18:51status quo or whatever arbitrary status quo has been established.
- 18:56That can't be it because there's no forward progress there.
- 19:00So something has to change I think on on multi levels.
- 19:07Yeah, I would go back to something that I'd like to
- 19:08always say there's a difference between discipline and
- 19:12philosophical restructuring and harsh stuff.
- 19:15Discipline's great. It's the Band-Aid, right?
- 19:16You're bleeding. You want to get up for work, so
- 19:19you have your wife pour water on you, you know 7:00 so you can
- 19:22get on time. You need to get to morning
- 19:24prayers so you reward yourself if you make it.
- 19:27These are great, but they're low level, They're temporary.
- 19:30They're not the real vote of. They're not the real work that
- 19:32needs to be done, really needs to be done.
- 19:34Things have to. Change things have.
- 19:37To change. So I agree with you, I think
- 19:38that LO and loan is a short term solution and since we're all
- 19:42here to uplift the world, there needs to be a deeper a deeper.
- 19:44Change circumcision of the heart.
- 19:46That's right, That's right. And I firmly believe that every
- 19:49single person, no matter who they are, if they're human, they
- 19:53have the image of God. So anything's possible.
- 19:56It's all about how we do it. Are they going to be receptive?
- 19:59But we should certainly never stop trying that, I'll say.
- 20:02Well, everyone, we hope you enjoyed our trek into making the
- 20:05world a holier place and perhaps one of the most defiled ones.
- 20:09We'll see you next time. Take care.
