- 0:08Speaker 1: This is to check O Daily.
- 0:09Speaker 2: I am Andrew de Checko, and we've been exploring a
- 0:13ton of different topics pertaining to the photo of Eagles
- 0:17this week, and really we will all offseason because I
- 0:20have plenty of ideas cooking up here. But today we're
- 0:25going to start a three part podcast series where I
- 0:29sort of highlight my biggest question mark at all three levels,
- 0:33all three facets I should say, of the team, starting
- 0:36with offense, and obviously the Eagles offense is primed to
- 0:41already contend for a Super Bowl. There haven't been many changes,
- 0:46although the changes that there have been are worth noting
- 0:50and they could impact how you perceive this offense moving forward.
- 0:56Now for me, aside from a new right, which will
- 1:00probably be Tyler Steve. If you've been listening to me
- 1:03for a while, I've been sort of lauding Tyler and
- 1:07his ability to step in there when called upon and
- 1:12perform pretty admirably. Stepping in make game is not an
- 1:15easy task, and I think you're seeing a player who
- 1:17has more confidence he's playing and utilizing his skill set
- 1:21to his advantage. He moves well, he can get to
- 1:24that second level, and he's been reliable and he will
- 1:27now be playing between Cam Jurgens and Lane Johnson. Lane
- 1:30Johnson will now play alongside him yet another right guard, but.
- 1:35Speaker 1: It's not somebody that he doesn't have familiarity with.
- 1:38Speaker 2: Then I do think that Tyler Steed is going to
- 1:40get off to a pretty good start, and I'm expecting
- 1:45him to run away with that job.
- 1:46Speaker 1: To be clear. Then you look at.
- 1:50Speaker 2: Someone like will Shipley stepping into a second running back
- 1:54role that was previously held by Kenny Gamwell, and that that's.
- 1:58Speaker 1: Something that I don't know that there is going to
- 2:00be a whole lot of a drop off.
- 2:02Speaker 2: And that's not to minimize what Kenny Gingwow has done
- 2:05during his time with the Eagles, because he was an
- 2:07effective two and four minute running back some way that
- 2:10the coaches had an immense amount of confidence in, and
- 2:13he was sounded pass protection and surprisingly in short yarded situations.
- 2:19Speaker 1: And he didn't have a huge bill. He just knew
- 2:20how to get low and use leverage and all of that.
- 2:23Speaker 2: So I'm not just gonna sit here and tell you
- 2:26that that's a minor loss. That's something that the Eagles
- 2:29are going to have to continue to work around and
- 2:31they're gonna learn a lot about Will Shipley this offseason, well,
- 2:35especially in training camp. But those two things I've just
- 2:39outlined why they're not really of concern.
- 2:42Speaker 1: I think Shipley offers some.
- 2:44Speaker 2: Dynamic qualities that would serve the offense well, especially under Batulo.
- 2:49And who knows if the Eagles decide to lean on
- 2:52the pass receiving elements of the running backs, well, he's
- 2:56gonna reap the benefits. Well Shipley, It's gonna come down
- 2:59to pass detection. But he obviously has the juice to
- 3:04be able to step in and sort of amplify the
- 3:07offense even more than it was last season. But that's
- 3:13not to minimize the accomplishments of Kenny Gangwoll or the
- 3:16impact of the Kenny gangwell. But Stein and shipleer two
- 3:20individual players who are going to be pressed into service
- 3:23this year in a more prominent light. But the big
- 3:27question I have is sort of from a broader perspective,
- 3:31and it is how will the offense evolve under new
- 3:35offensive coordinator Kevin Patula.
- 3:38Speaker 1: It's a fair question, especially when.
- 3:41Speaker 2: At every turn, whether it was Aj Brown or Jalen Hurts,
- 3:45they've all talked about the offense's need to evolve, And
- 3:51I mean that's not anything groundbreaking. Clearly it does, but
- 3:56let's take a step back for a moment and look
- 3:58at what that could possibly meet. Because last season the
- 4:02Eagles were, obviously He's heavily run centric, and that was
- 4:06really out of necessity because to start the season the
- 4:11passing game was choppy, it was staggering, and it really
- 4:15lacked cohesiveness. So coming out of the bye week, Nick
- 4:19Sirianni was receptive and responsive to feedback he got from
- 4:25his offensive line, and the Eagles adopted an entirely new
- 4:27philosophy coming out of that bye week, and that was
- 4:30to lean on sat Mom Barkley and that offensive line
- 4:34and really have the offense run through them versus off
- 4:40the arm of Jay when hurts of the passing game.
- 4:42Speaker 1: That's not a slight and anything.
- 4:45Speaker 2: It's an acknowledgment and a recognition of what was working,
- 4:49and tried to stay true and lean into those and
- 4:53lean into those strengths, and right coming out of the
- 4:56bye week, it was apparent that that offensive line was
- 4:59continuing to round in the form that were playing with
- 5:02toughness and nastiness and attitude, and Saquon Barkley was rounding
- 5:07into form in his own right, it made a ton
- 5:11of sense. Not surprised that they went that route and
- 5:15didn't stick with the passing game a little longer than
- 5:18than it maybe ordinarily would have.
- 5:21Speaker 1: And I think for the Eagles to get.
- 5:23Speaker 2: The season off on the right foot, they had to
- 5:25go to the bread and butter and not not necessarily
- 5:28try to force a square pegg at all round hole
- 5:31if it wasn't working.
- 5:32Speaker 1: Because every week obviously is.
- 5:33Speaker 2: So important in the NFL, and the offense is far
- 5:37too talented for it to becoming the defensive. So I
- 5:41look at this offense this year, and when you hear evolve,
- 5:44it certainly doesn't have to do. It is somebody who
- 5:50rushed for two thousand yards last year, and I mean,
- 5:54and he could have probably done more. He was sat
- 5:56down at different points of the game and different than
- 5:58you know when the Eagles got out to be leads
- 6:00and all of that.
- 6:02Speaker 1: So if it's not the running game, then what needs
- 6:04to evolve. Well, that's simple the passing game.
- 6:08Speaker 2: But it's a little bit more complicated when you get
- 6:11sort of dell beneath the surface. Because last season Kevin
- 6:14Patullo oversaw the Eagles passing game, which really didn't meet expectations.
- 6:19But I think that Kevin Petulo has a unique perspective
- 6:23here because he has that knowledge of what works and
- 6:27what didn't work. How can what would he have done differently?
- 6:30How can he accentuate what his personnel does well? And
- 6:34sometimes taking a step back and seeing it from a
- 6:36different lens affords you that opportunity and that insight to
- 6:42go into it with with with a different with different
- 6:45ideologies or a different approach. And I think you're going
- 6:48to see the passing game have more wrinkles.
- 6:50Speaker 1: You're going to see what I'm expecting to be more
- 6:53advanced route concepts.
- 6:56Speaker 2: Last year, if you remember, the offense was largely horizontal.
- 7:02When the offense took to the air, there wasn't a
- 7:05lot of downfield throws.
- 7:07Speaker 1: I thought it was really compressed.
- 7:08Speaker 2: And that's not to mention that the middle of the
- 7:10field was grossfully underutilized. But it is something that needs
- 7:14to be acknowledged and something that I am expecting the
- 7:18Eagles to tap into.
- 7:20Speaker 1: This year with Batullo.
- 7:22Speaker 2: But for the Eagles to really make that step forward,
- 7:25and you hear the word evolved, It can't run it back.
- 7:29Speaker 1: The team can't run it back. In the way that
- 7:30it did last year. And when you hear.
- 7:32Speaker 2: Someone like say bon Barb, we talk about what he's
- 7:35learned and what he's you know, this offseason, what he's
- 7:38done differently and scaling things back a little bit. That's
- 7:41not to say that he's completely resting or relaxing.
- 7:44Speaker 1: It's that he knows what's the workload that's ahead. And
- 7:47I think for the Eagles.
- 7:48Speaker 2: To really be able to realize the full potential of
- 7:51its offense, you got to scale it back a little bit.
- 7:54Maybe you rely on those ship a little bit more
- 7:56as that number two running back, But I really do
- 8:00believe that the passing game really has to take flight
- 8:02here and it has to look a little bit more creative.
- 8:05Speaker 1: The route concepts have to be more advanced.
- 8:07Speaker 2: Jaywen Hurts has to continue to springs, because we've seen
- 8:12from Jaywen has been somebody who has been decisive. He
- 8:15gets rid of the football in a timely and efficient manner.
- 8:18He's throwing the ball with accuracy and touch. But build
- 8:22off of that and push the ball down the field
- 8:24a little bit more and find ways to open things up.
- 8:27Speaker 1: Because I'm going.
- 8:29Speaker 2: Into the season with the expectation that aj Brown is
- 8:32going to leave no doubt that he's the best receiver
- 8:34in the National Football League. I firmly believe that, and
- 8:37I know that it's sound. You can make that proclamation
- 8:39at this point of the season.
- 8:41Speaker 1: But when you hear a.
- 8:41Speaker 2: Coach to take the offense needs to evolve, and you
- 8:44see the motivation from Jayalen Hurts and from AJ Brown
- 8:47and from really the whole offense, the avoidance of complacency, well,
- 8:51I think you have no choice but to believe that
- 8:54the passing game is going to look markedly different than
- 8:57it has in the past.
- 9:00Speaker 1: And I think a lot of that has to do
- 9:02with the middle of the field utilization.
- 9:03Speaker 2: But I also think that you're going to see the
- 9:07team take shots down the field. When they did that
- 9:10in twenty three and even twenty two, you saw the
- 9:12unique stresses of that put on defenses.
- 9:14Speaker 1: But until we see it on the field, it's kind
- 9:17of hard to take that and run with it.
- 9:22Speaker 2: That's just my opinion. That's what I'm believing we're going
- 9:24to see from the offense. And you talk about fresh
- 9:27concepts and a new way to look at things and
- 9:30constantly leaning into different resources, Well, if you do that,
- 9:35then that would suggest that you're going to do.
- 9:36Speaker 1: You're going to change it up a little bit, and
- 9:38I'm expecting the passing game to be the beneficiary of it.
- 9:42And I think Jalen Hurts in his own right, is
- 9:45going to.
- 9:47Speaker 2: Take a next step as a passer, as a full
- 9:50field processor and all those things and really leave no
- 9:53doubt in the minds of whatever skeptics remain that he
- 9:56is among the elite at his position. And I think
- 10:00Batulo and Jay when Hurts are going to have that
- 10:02working relationship that's already been established that should allow that offense,
- 10:06particularly the passing attack, to get out to a fast
- 10:08start and hit the ground running once training camp begins
- 10:12and carry that momentum through to the regular season. So
- 10:16that's my biggest question mark on the offensive side, as
- 10:19we continue to sort through some things moving to training camp,
- 10:25sort through different storylines, and tomorrow we're going to explore
- 10:29the biggest question that I have on the defensive side,
- 10:32and then on Saturday there'll be the biggest question that
- 10:34I have on the special teams front and how that
- 10:39could possibly shake out or what are some of the
- 10:41options there. But there's plenty to dissect and explore as
- 10:46we move through this Eagles offseason.
- 10:48Speaker 1: And get you to training camp.
- 10:50Speaker 2: But again, this is Andrew de Checko and this is
- 10:52another edition of to check o'delle.
- 10:54Speaker 1: I'll talk to everybody tomorrow. Have a good one and
