Latest / Sri Aurobindo Studies / Understanding the Differences Between the Vital Desire Soul and the Psychic Being
Transcript
- 0:01We can observe in our own lives and in the lives of various
- 0:05individuals. We see on the world stage the
- 0:09difference between those who are driven primarily by the impulses
- 0:13of the external vital nature and the ego personality and those
- 0:19who have made contact with the inner being and have developed a
- 0:23new standpoint that is based on the harmony of the divine or
- 0:27spiritual consciousness. Those who are fixated on the
- 0:32external vital nature may exhibit various forces of the
- 0:35animal nature may be filled with desire, lust, greed and a power
- 0:42hungry demand that can turn into bullying and intimidation.
- 0:48These individuals, while they believe they will have
- 0:51satisfaction from fulfilment of these various forms of desire
- 0:55and vital activity, actually are generally unhappy, and they
- 1:00suffer inwardly very much. The other actions are a
- 1:05reflection of what they have and carry around with themselves.
- 1:10On the other hand, we can see individuals who are souls of
- 1:14peace, harmony and contentment, who radiate goodwill to others,
- 1:20and who are generally inwardly happy.
- 1:24Their concern for the well-being of others is sincere and shows
- 1:27itself in many ways by their thoughtful and caring expression
- 1:31of concern and their actions to ease the burden that others
- 1:35carry as well as the burden on the planet that human life
- 1:39creates. They are based within in the
- 1:43psychic being or true soul that each individual has deep inside
- 1:47himself, mostly hidden behind the veil of the outer nature.
- 1:53The psychic being represents the divine presence within each of
- 1:57us. Each individual carries within
- 2:01himself these conflicting forces to some degree in a greater or
- 2:05lesser measure or balance. Some individuals are heavily
- 2:10skewed toward the one side and others are heavily skewed
- 2:14towards the other. When we look within ourselves
- 2:18and evaluate our thoughts, emotions, feelings, actions, and
- 2:23reactions, we can recognize the seeds and the expressions that
- 2:28come with the one standpoint or the other.
- 2:32This is the starting point for the process of spiritual growth
- 2:35and development of spiritual maturity.
- 2:39As we begin to systematically address those impulses within us
- 2:43that cater to the vital desires of the ego personality.
- 2:47And at the same time we begin to build up those forces that
- 2:52represent the true soul or the psychic being within us,
- 2:56dedicated and consecrated to the divine and receptive to the
- 3:01impulsion that is bringing forth the birth of a new consciousness
- 3:06based in understanding, goodwill and harmony.
- 3:11Once we recognize this play of forces within ourselves and
- 3:15recognize how much we actually suffer when we give in to the
- 3:19lower vital impulses, we can then gain an understanding and a
- 3:23compassion for the suffering of those beings who are literally
- 3:27consumed and driven by these vital prods.
- 3:31Their lives are intensely painful.
- 3:35The Mother notes quote the inner law.
- 3:40The truth of the Being is the Divine Presence in every human
- 3:44being, which should be the master and guide of our life.
- 3:49When you acquire the habit of listening to this inner law,
- 3:53when you obey it, follow it, try more and more to let it guide
- 3:58your life, you create around you an atmosphere of truth and peace
- 4:03and harmony, which naturally reacts upon circumstances and
- 4:08forms, so to say, the atmosphere in which you live when you are a
- 4:14being of justice, truth, harmony, compassion,
- 4:19understanding of perfect goodwill.
- 4:23This inner attitude, the more sincere and total it is, the
- 4:29more it reacts upon the external circumstances.
- 4:33Not that it necessarily diminishes the difficulties of
- 4:37life, but it gives these difficulties a new meaning, and
- 4:42that allows you to face them with a new strength and a new
- 4:45wisdom. Whereas the man, the human being
- 4:49who follows his impulses, who obeys his desires, who has no
- 4:53time for scruples, who comes to live in complete cynicism, not
- 4:59caring for the effect that his life has upon others, or for the
- 5:03more or less harmful consequences of his acts,
- 5:07creates for himself an atmosphere of ugliness,
- 5:11selfishness, conflict and bad will, which necessarily acts
- 5:16more and more upon his consciousness and gives a
- 5:19bitterness to his life that in the end becomes a perpetual
- 5:25torment. End Quote.
