- 1:11Speaker 3: The Invisible Ape, starring Larry Parks.
- 1:15Speaker 2: A tale well calculated to keep you in.
- 1:19Speaker 3: suspense. I figured it out today, Pat.
- 1:33Speaker 5: Figured what?
- 1:34Speaker 8: About what's happening at the Jameson house. Them bottles jumping
- 1:37Speaker 8: off shelves and all.
- 1:38Speaker 3: And water cheeses?
- 1:40Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 1:40Speaker 8: I figure the whole Jameson family's been hypnotized, that's what.
- 1:43Speaker 3: Hypnotized. All of them.
- 1:45Speaker 8: Well, first today.
- 1:47Speaker 3: Cheers.
- 1:48Speaker 5: Cheers.
- 1:50Speaker 3: Pat? Yeah, what is it?
- 1:52Speaker 8: Look at that bottle. No, down there. At the end
- 1:56Speaker 8: of the bar.
- 1:58Speaker 2: Saints Preservative.
- 1:59Speaker 3: Floating down from the shelf.
- 2:01Speaker 8: And there's nobody in this bar but us two.
- 2:06Speaker 3: Hey, I'm Joe Taylor. You know me.
- 2:09Speaker 6: Let me out of here.
- 2:11Speaker 7: I work at the optical.
- 2:12Speaker 3: Foundation up the street. I'm Dr. Bernstein's assistant.
- 2:16Speaker 9: They can't see me, so they won't listen to me.
- 2:19Speaker 9: Nobody will listen. Maybe you'll listen to me.
- 2:30Speaker 3: Will you listen, Kitty? Thank you.
- 2:36Speaker 9: You see.
- 2:37Speaker 3: It's all my fault. Kitty, yesterday I let that stupid
- 2:42Speaker 3: chimpanzee get away. Janice was typing a progress report when
- 2:46Speaker 3: I got to the lab this morning. Good morning, Janice. Morning, Joe.
- 2:51Speaker 10: Dr.
- 2:52Speaker 3: Bernstein said for you to check the white mice first
- 2:54Speaker 3: thing this morning.
- 2:56Speaker 5: Joe, stop that.
- 2:58Speaker 3: You know I hate being sneaked up on. Don't ever
- 3:00Speaker 3: do it again. You never minded my kissing you before.
- 3:04Speaker 3: What's wrong, Jan? Nothing.
- 3:05Speaker 5: Nothing.
- 3:07Speaker 3: I called you last night. Your mother said you were out.
- 3:10Speaker 5: I was. With?
- 3:12Speaker 3: Robert. Champagne and caviar? He asked me to marry him. And?
- 3:20Speaker 3: I told him I'd think it over for a couple
- 3:22Speaker 3: of days. Think it over? But we're engaged. Oh, who
- 3:27Speaker 3: are we kidding, Joe? Let's face it, you can't even
- 3:29Speaker 3: afford a ring. Suppose I could get you a ring.
- 3:33Speaker 3: Any ring you wanted. Anything you wanted. I'm $ 53 a
- 3:37Speaker 3: week take home. No, listen, Jan. Stop that typing and listen.
- 3:41Speaker 3: I've given this a lot of thought. I've been thinking
- 3:44Speaker 3: about it ever since we first treated those mice and
- 3:46Speaker 3: then Chico. Jan, do you realize what it would mean
- 3:49Speaker 3: to be invisible like Chico wherever he is? You mean
- 3:53Speaker 3: treat yourself? Make yourself invisible? Why not? Then I could
- 3:57Speaker 3: do anything I want. Take anything I want and nobody
- 4:00Speaker 3: would be able to see me. Give me the shivers.
- 4:02Speaker 3: What would it mean if I was invisible? Engagement ring,
- 4:06Speaker 3: the biggest diamond I could find. Money, I could steal
- 4:09Speaker 3: all we could spend. Janice, I could run the world. Joe,
- 4:13Speaker 3: you're out of your head. And we don't even know
- 4:16Speaker 3: if it works. On people, anyway. Flesh is flesh and
- 4:20Speaker 3: bones are bones. It worked on the mice and it
- 4:22Speaker 3: worked on that stupid ape. It'll work on me.
- 4:24Speaker 5: What about Dr. Bernstein?
- 4:26Speaker 3: I'll buy him off. With the money I can lift,
- 4:28Speaker 3: I'll be able to buy anybody off.
- 4:29Speaker 5: Oh, no, Joe.
- 4:31Speaker 3: Not Dr.
- 4:31Speaker 8: Bernstein.
- 4:32Speaker 3: You couldn't buy him off.
- 4:34Speaker 5: We'll see about that. Oh, good morning, Joe.
- 4:40Speaker 6: Good morning, Kenneth.
- 4:41Speaker 3: Good morning, Doctor.
- 4:43Speaker 5: You check the mice, Joe?
- 4:45Speaker 3: No, sir. I just got in.
- 4:46Speaker 5: Oh, well, let's take a look.
- 4:49Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 4:51Speaker 5: Seems to be all right. Well, except this little character.
- 4:56Speaker 5: Come here, Buster.
- 4:57Speaker 8: Here.
- 4:58Speaker 5: Let's see. Specimen 438, male.
- 5:03Speaker 10: 20 Rankins to the point of transparency, 30 Rankins to
- 5:07Speaker 10: return to visibility.
- 5:10Speaker 5: He's pretty sick from something, isn't he?
- 5:12Speaker 3: Well, we'll keep an eye on him.
- 5:17Speaker 5: Any word on Chico?
- 5:18Speaker 2: No, sir.
- 5:19Speaker 3: I'm awfully sorry about that doctor, about him getting away
- 5:22Speaker 3: with it.
- 5:23Speaker 5: It could have happened to anybody, Joe.
- 5:25Speaker 10: You're dealing with an almost human intelligence when you handle chimpanzees.
- 5:30Speaker 10: You give one an advantage like we gave Chico, he
- 5:34Speaker 10: can't be blamed if he gets away.
- 5:37Speaker 5: But you know, Joe, I couldn't sleep last night.
- 5:41Speaker 3: Why not, Doctor? Oh, I kept thinking about what's happening
- 5:43Speaker 3: out at the Jameson house.
- 5:45Speaker 5: I've come to the conclusion that it's Chico.
- 5:49Speaker 3: Oh, Doctor, couldn't be. No, no, I'm sure of it.
- 5:52Speaker 5: Anything new happen out there last night?
- 5:54Speaker 3: I don't know. I haven't seen the morning paper.
- 5:55Speaker 5: Well, let's try the radio. The news ought to be on.
- 5:58Speaker 3: But, Doctor, if Cheek goes out there, somebody would have
- 6:00Speaker 3: stumbled over him by now.
- 6:01Speaker 5: Not necessarily. Remember, he can see, Joe. He sees somebody
- 6:06Speaker 5: coming towards him, he moves out of the way.
- 6:08Speaker 11: Well, another puzzling night for detectives staked out at George
- 6:11Speaker 11: Jamison's house on Carlisle Avenue.
- 6:14Speaker 3: Detective Murdoch reports that last night.
- 6:16Speaker 11: He saw a bottle of cough medicine jump from a
- 6:18Speaker 11: medicine cabinet and crash.
- 6:20Speaker 3: Into the sink.
- 6:21Speaker 11: Now, this is nothing new lately in the Jameson house,
- 6:24Speaker 11: but this bottle wasn't broken. And when the detective picked
- 6:27Speaker 11: it up, it was warm to the touch. And so
- 6:31Speaker 11: the mystery deepens. Well, that's all on the local news front.
- 6:34Speaker 5: All right. That does it. I'm going to have to
- 6:37Speaker 5: make it public.
- 6:38Speaker 3: But, Doctor, we still don't know for sure. Of course
- 6:41Speaker 3: we do.
- 6:41Speaker 5: Remember how Chico loved cough medicine? Janice.
- 6:45Speaker 8: Yes, sir?
- 6:46Speaker 5: I want a dictator press release.
- 6:49Speaker 3: I knew he meant it. I knew I had to
- 6:51Speaker 3: move him quick. I carry a. 38 in the glove
- 6:53Speaker 3: compartment of my car. I slipped out and got it.
- 6:56Speaker 3: When I came back, the doctor was still dictating it.
- 6:59Speaker 5: The mice were exposed to a radioactive isotope.
- 7:03Speaker 10: Their cell structure was modified to permit their organs and
- 7:08Speaker 10: bones to transmit light. Like a bottle of water or
- 7:12Speaker 10: a chunk of glass. Rather than reflect light... as the
- 7:18Speaker 10: body surface of an ordinary mouse or ape or human.
- 7:22Speaker 5: Being will do.
- 7:25Speaker 10: The mice were brought back to opaqueness by a reverse process.
- 7:30Speaker 10: But before the chimpanzee cells could be returned to normal.
- 7:35Speaker 7: It escaped.
- 7:38Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 7:39Speaker 10: All right, Jan, you type that up right away and
- 7:40Speaker 10: let me see it.
- 7:41Speaker 3: Yes, Doctor.
- 7:41Speaker 8: I'm going to go across the seat for a couple
- 7:43Speaker 8: of minutes.
- 7:46Speaker 3: Where have you been, Joe? You look like you've just
- 7:48Speaker 3: run a mile. I went out to the car. I
- 7:50Speaker 3: got this. Gun. That's right. In case he won't go
- 7:54Speaker 3: along with it. First, I have to get that ape
- 7:56Speaker 3: before somebody else finds out about him. What are you doing? Stripping.
- 8:00Speaker 3: I want you to handle the control board. You remember
- 8:03Speaker 3: the procedure? Same as Chico. No, I won't stay here
- 8:07Speaker 3: while you undress. What kind of a girl do you
- 8:09Speaker 3: think I am? But it's for you. It's for us, Jan.
- 8:12Speaker 8: No, it's wrong.
- 8:13Speaker 3: It's I don't want any part of it. Okay. All right,
- 8:20Speaker 3: I'll do it myself. I put the gun in the drawer,
- 8:24Speaker 3: then I moved the reactor table closer to the control board.
- 8:28Speaker 3: I climbed up on it and began to turn the knobs.
- 8:32Speaker 3: I didn't feel a thing except for a little tingling
- 8:35Speaker 3: up and down my spine. Not a thing. Let's see,
- 8:41Speaker 3: 75 rentkins for five seconds....
- 8:45Speaker 2: One, two, three, four, five.
- 8:54Speaker 3: Then I was afraid to look. I forced my eyes
- 8:57Speaker 3: from the dials toward my feet. Knowing what to expect,
- 9:02Speaker 3: I still could hardly believe what I saw or didn't see.
- 9:06Speaker 3: It was like I wasn't there. I looked down at
- 9:09Speaker 3: my legs. Where my legs should have been, all I
- 9:11Speaker 3: could see was the white enamel of the reactor table.
- 9:15Speaker 3: I ran to the mirror in the washroom. But if
- 9:18Speaker 3: I wasn't there at all, I've done it. I've done it.
- 9:23Speaker 7: I'm invisible.
- 9:47Speaker 3: It was a warm summer day, but walking along Main
- 9:50Speaker 3: Street toward Jameson's house without any clothes on had me
- 9:52Speaker 3: shivering plenty. The first woman I met, I wanted to
- 9:56Speaker 3: cut and run, but she looked right through me. I
- 9:58Speaker 3: was as invisible as she was. as the glass in
- 10:01Speaker 3: the store window. But when I saw the cop outside
- 10:04Speaker 3: Jameson's place, I stopped cold. He was staring right at me.
- 10:07Speaker 3: Had something gone wrong?
- 10:08Speaker 10: No.
- 10:10Speaker 3: Now his eyes traveled past me. I turned around. He'd
- 10:14Speaker 3: been staring at a doll across the street. The door
- 10:18Speaker 3: of the Jameson house was open. I went in. Mr.
- 10:20Speaker 2: Jameson, who runs the local men's furnishing store, looked kind
- 10:24Speaker 2: of tired and rumpus.
- 10:25Speaker 3: They were shooting newsreels, and he was facing a battery
- 10:28Speaker 3: of light.
- 10:29Speaker 5: Okay, Mr.
- 10:29Speaker 8: Jameson.
- 10:31Speaker 5: Camera. Sound.
- 10:36Speaker 8: This morning, it happened again. I was helping Mrs. Jameson
- 10:40Speaker 8: with the breakfast dishes, and suddenly a dish sailed off
- 10:43Speaker 8: the sink and crashed against the wall.
- 10:47Speaker 3: I crossed in front of the camera and the cameraman
- 10:49Speaker 3: never even batted an eye. I went into the bathroom
- 10:53Speaker 3: and looked in the medicine cabinet. I found a bottle
- 10:56Speaker 3: of cough medicine and put it in the middle of
- 10:58Speaker 3: the floor. The minute I heard something breathing, there was
- 11:03Speaker 3: no one in the room, no one I could see.
- 11:06Speaker 3: I backed up next to the door and watched the bottle.
- 11:09Speaker 3: Suddenly it popped into the air and tilted.
- 11:11Speaker 2: As the cap began to screw itself off, I moved
- 11:15Speaker 2: toward it.
- 11:16Speaker 3: And I grabbed for the air around it. I felt
- 11:18Speaker 3: a furry arm. Come on, Chico. Come on, you idiot.
- 11:23Speaker 8: What was that?
- 11:24Speaker 2: In the bathroom.
- 11:25Speaker 7: Let's go, Chico.
- 11:30Speaker 2: Hand in hand, invisible as a couple of ghosts, Chico
- 11:33Speaker 2: and I went back to the lab.
- 11:35Speaker 3: Janice was still out.
- 11:36Speaker 2: But the doctor was there. He jumped when he heard
- 11:40Speaker 2: me close the door.
- 11:41Speaker 5: What's that?
- 11:43Speaker 3: It's me, Doc. Me and Chico.
- 11:47Speaker 8: Joe.
- 11:49Speaker 3: Joe, you didn't. Yeah, Doc, I did.
- 11:52Speaker 5: Why, Joe, why?
- 11:54Speaker 3: To catch Chico for one thing so he couldn't see
- 11:56Speaker 3: me coming.
- 11:57Speaker 5: Well, what difference did it make? He wasn't hurting anybody.
- 11:59Speaker 5: They'd have caught him sooner or later.
- 12:01Speaker 3: I had another reason, Doc.
- 12:05Speaker 5: What was it, Joe?
- 12:06Speaker 2: I wanted to try it out, this transparency. I wanted
- 12:09Speaker 2: to see how it would work on a human being.
- 12:12Speaker 3: And now that you know it works, I've got plans.
- 12:15Speaker 3: We might as well get that straight. I've got plans.
- 12:19Speaker 5: I thought it might be something like that.
- 12:22Speaker 3: What plans? Plans to cash in on this. Doc, I'm
- 12:25Speaker 3: tired of working for Peanuts. You ought to be, too.
- 12:28Speaker 3: I can't buy decent clothes. I can't get a ring for.
- 12:31Speaker 2: The girl I love.
- 12:32Speaker 3: We've developed something here that's worth money. There isn't a bank.
- 12:35Speaker 3: There isn't a jewelry store. There isn't a mint that's
- 12:37Speaker 3: proof against an invisible man. The sky's the limit, Doc.
- 12:41Speaker 3: You handle the equipment. I'll take the risk.
- 12:43Speaker 8: I see.
- 12:45Speaker 5: And if I won't go along with you?
- 12:47Speaker 3: There's always this, Doc. A gun.
- 12:53Speaker 11: Well, what are you going to do with it?
- 12:55Speaker 3: First, we're going to take Chico out in the woods
- 12:57Speaker 3: and shoot him, just so he won't give us away.
- 12:59Speaker 5: Why not just bring him back to opaqueness?
- 13:02Speaker 2: Why bother?
- 13:02Speaker 3: Why strain the equipment? We're going to need it.
- 13:06Speaker 10: Joe, have you thought how it would be if you
- 13:10Speaker 10: were invisible the rest of your life?
- 13:13Speaker 5: If you couldn't come back?
- 13:15Speaker 3: What do you mean, couldn't come back?
- 13:17Speaker 10: Well, suppose we can't reverse the process. Suppose we can't
- 13:21Speaker 10: bring you back to an opaque state.
- 13:23Speaker 3: Don't be silly. We brought back the mice.
- 13:26Speaker 5: Safely.
- 13:26Speaker 3: Well, they're all right, aren't they?
- 13:28Speaker 5: Take a look.
- 13:29Speaker 3: We're all right.
- 13:30Speaker 5: Take a look.
- 13:30Speaker 3: They were all right this morning.
- 13:32Speaker 4: Oh, no.
- 13:34Speaker 3: No, no, Doc. Half of them are dead.
- 13:38Speaker 5: That's right, Joe.
- 13:40Speaker 10: Too many Renkins. It takes too many Renkins for a
- 13:44Speaker 10: two-way trip. Now, do you still want to shoot Chico?
- 13:51Speaker 3: No. No, we've got to try to bring him back.
- 13:53Speaker 3: We've got to try. We've got to see him.
- 13:55Speaker 5: Put him on the table, Joe.
- 13:58Speaker 3: We managed to get Chico onto the reactor table and
- 14:00Speaker 3: to strap him down. And I stood back, afraid of
- 14:03Speaker 3: taking any more radiation while the doctor turned up the pile.
- 14:09Speaker 8: Okay.
- 14:11Speaker 5: Eighty-five rankings ought to do it. Uh, time check.
- 14:14Speaker 3: Mark.
- 14:16Speaker 5: One.
- 14:21Speaker 3: Before my eyes, Chico slowly materialized. Like looking at someone
- 14:26Speaker 3: through foggy glasses at first. Like a picture out of focus.
- 14:30Speaker 3: I couldn't be sure that I was seeing right. Then suddenly,
- 14:33Speaker 3: there he was.
- 14:36Speaker 5: There he was, just like before.
- 14:38Speaker 3: Ugly little chimp like any other. But he just lay there.
- 14:44Speaker 3: An ugly little chimp like any other except.
- 14:47Speaker 5: He's dead, Joe.
- 14:49Speaker 3: No. No.
- 14:51Speaker 2: No!
- 15:12Speaker 3: I found myself walking up Main Street, passing people I'd
- 15:16Speaker 3: known for years, wanting to grab them by the arm
- 15:19Speaker 3: and talk to them.
- 15:20Speaker 5: Tell them, just.
- 15:22Speaker 3: Explain to them that I was really here, that I
- 15:24Speaker 3: was still alive. I stood outside Carter's jewelry store, looking
- 15:28Speaker 3: at the diamond rings in the window. At least this
- 15:30Speaker 3: was one thing worthwhile taking. When I walked in, I
- 15:34Speaker 3: must have triggered a little bell under the mat. Carter
- 15:38Speaker 3: looked up from the newspaper he was reading at the counter.
- 15:40Speaker 3: He stared right through me for a second, frowning, then
- 15:43Speaker 3: he shrugged and went back to his paper. Janice had
- 15:47Speaker 3: liked a ring in the case next to him. I
- 15:50Speaker 3: moved round him, slid it open. I found the ring
- 15:53Speaker 3: and lifted it. Carter didn't even budge. Then I started
- 15:57Speaker 3: back to the lab. Jan was alone in the lab.
- 16:05Speaker 3: I walked up behind her and put the ring on
- 16:08Speaker 3: her desk. Jan? Joe! I told you never to sneak
- 16:13Speaker 3: up on me.
- 16:14Speaker 8: Where.
- 16:16Speaker 2: Where are you?
- 16:17Speaker 3: Right here beside you. No.
- 16:19Speaker 7: No!
- 16:20Speaker 3: Stay away from me!
- 16:21Speaker 9: See, Jan?
- 16:22Speaker 3: Go away! I got your ring, the one you wanted.
- 16:24Speaker 7: Stay away!
- 16:26Speaker 3: Stay away from me!
- 16:27Speaker 7: I don't want it! Keep away from me!
- 16:29Speaker 11: She picked up the ring and threw it across the lab.
- 16:31Speaker 3: Then she ran screaming out of the room. I picked
- 16:36Speaker 3: up the ring and sat for a long time at
- 16:38Speaker 3: her desk. Then I heard Dr. Bernstein come in.
- 16:42Speaker 5: Joe? Are you in here?
- 16:46Speaker 3: Yeah, I'm here.
- 16:48Speaker 11: Joe, I called.
- 16:49Speaker 10: Professor Wilson at the AEC and I told him what
- 16:51Speaker 10: you did. He thinks if we expose you to tiny
- 16:55Speaker 10: doses once a week over a long period of time,
- 16:58Speaker 10: we'll be able to bring.
- 16:59Speaker 3: You back to visibility.
- 17:01Speaker 5: But how long?
- 17:02Speaker 3: How long, Doctor?
- 17:06Speaker 5: At least five years, Charles. Five years.
- 17:12Speaker 2: It's better than forever. I wandered down Main Street again,
- 17:25Speaker 2: put Carter's ring back in his case, then I went
- 17:28Speaker 2: by Pat's Tavern.
- 17:30Speaker 3: More than anything in the world, I wanted a drink.
- 17:33Speaker 3: Pat was shining glasses talking to some guy at the
- 17:36Speaker 3: end of the bar. I didn't see any way to
- 17:38Speaker 3: get a drink except to swipe one, so I reached
- 17:41Speaker 3: up on the shelf and grabbed a bottle. I figured
- 17:44Speaker 3: it out today, Pat.
- 17:45Speaker 5: Figured what?
- 17:46Speaker 8: About what's happening out at the Jameson house. Them bottles
- 17:49Speaker 8: jumping off shelves and all. I figured the whole family's hypnotized.
- 17:52Speaker 5: All of them.
- 17:54Speaker 8: Well, first today.
- 17:56Speaker 5: Cheers. Cheers.
- 18:00Speaker 3: Pat? Yeah, what is it?
