Latest / Gorls Unplugged / From BookTok to Hollywood - The adaptations we’re excited (and nervous) for
Transcript
- 0:00Hey guys, welcome back to Girls Unplugged.
- 0:03It's finally 2026 and we're back with a new episode.
- 0:08So much later than planned. Yeah, very much later than
- 0:11planned. But before we started today's
- 0:13episode, we just want to say a massive thank you for all of the
- 0:15love and support last year. We got our Spotify creator
- 0:18Wrapped at the end of December, which you might have seen if you
- 0:21follow us on Instagram. And we were like, really
- 0:24pleasantly surprised because we definitely thought.
- 0:26No one was blown away. Yeah.
- 0:28We definitely thought no one was listening to us and that is not
- 0:31the case. So if you're still here, if
- 0:33you've been here last year, thank you so much.
- 0:36Don't forget to like, follow and subscribe.
- 0:39We're on Spotify, YouTube, Instagram and TikTok all at the
- 0:43same username, Girls Unplugged. So make sure to join us to see
- 0:47everything that we post today. We're going to be talking about
- 0:50book to screen adaptations, aren't we?
- 0:53Which was, we've been planning on doing this for a while
- 0:55because there, like last year, it felt like every week there
- 0:58was going to be there was a new announcement.
- 1:00This was getting done. This was getting done.
- 1:02This was getting done. So actually now we're like,
- 1:04right now's the time to talk about everything coming.
- 1:07Yeah. So be honest.
- 1:08What is your first thought when you hear that one of your
- 1:11favorite books is getting adapted to the big screen?
- 1:17Like a mixture of excitement and yeah, stress. 100% I'll totally
- 1:23get it. It also depends on who the
- 1:25production team is, what the company is, If it's going direct
- 1:29to streaming on Netflix, I don't have big hopes.
- 1:32But this is your thoughts, not mine.
- 1:34I'm just like, who are they gonna cast?
- 1:38Yeah, I get really scared, I'm not gonna lie.
- 1:41Some books that I've loved in the past have been amazing,
- 1:45perfect adaptations. Some, not so much.
- 1:47Yeah, and one of them we'll actually be talking about today.
- 1:50OK. So before we talk about specific
- 1:53book screen adaptations, what's coming this year, what's coming
- 1:56beyond that? Why or do we think that book
- 2:00talk is having a massive influence on what is being moved
- 2:04from not just not just book talk books to ground like the whole
- 2:08bookish community? Do we think that's having an
- 2:10impact on what's being picked up for films or screen?
- 2:13I personally think yes and no. So I always think that books
- 2:17have always been adapted to screen forever.
- 2:19Like when we were teenagers, we had Twilight, Divergent, Hunger
- 2:23Games, like all of those massive books are always picked up to go
- 2:27to screen, especially if they have some element of action to
- 2:30them because obviously that translates really well.
- 2:34But I do think what the bookish community has influence is the
- 2:37rise of romance because there was a huge dip between maybe
- 2:42like the mid 2000s and very, very recently where we weren't
- 2:45really getting any good ROM coms.
- 2:48We don't really get many romance TV shows especially.
- 2:51And now we're starting to get some with like heated rivalry
- 2:54and other things like that. So that's personally I think my
- 2:57take on it. What do you think?
- 2:59Yeah, I mean, I do agree. And I do also feel that there
- 3:01was a bit of a dip with like fantasy stuff.
- 3:04I remember after I like finished Vampire Diaries in the Originals
- 3:06and everything, I was like, this really isn't much newness in
- 3:10this like romantic fantasy kind of genre happening on TV right
- 3:15now. And I would say that with the
- 3:18amount we're seeing coming out of like this year, I mean, it's
- 3:23wild. Literally last last year, it
- 3:26felt like every week there was a new announcement of something
- 3:29else being picked up. And you know, someone else's
- 3:32books are going to be on the big screen next year.
- 3:34And it will felt a bit like, oh, when is this going to stop?
- 3:37Like how? Like how is it going to feel
- 3:41watching all of these next year? So I do think it has, it
- 3:44obviously has an influence whether or not when those things
- 3:47release, that's a good or bad influence like we shall see.
- 3:51Yeah, I'm excited to see quite a lot of them.
- 3:54I definitely agree with you that we don't get much fantasy.
- 3:56We never have them like. Not enough.
- 3:59Things that are a massive fantasy production like Lord of
- 4:02the Rings we barely ever get. And I guess because it takes so
- 4:06much time and money to film things like that.
- 4:09Yeah, I mean, obviously Rings of Power, the TV show that came
- 4:11out, what was it like 2 years ago from Lord of the Rings?
- 4:13That's the most expensive TV show ever produced.
- 4:16Really. Yeah.
- 4:18I actually still need to watch season 2 of that.
- 4:19We're going way off topic already, but I do actually need
- 4:21to watch that because I really enjoyed season.
- 4:23One so me and Whitney got stuck with season 1 about halfway
- 4:27through. Whitney's my sister by the way,
- 4:28guys. And.
- 4:30We didn't love it, however Molly our friend said that it got
- 4:35better and she I'm pretty sure she's watched season 2 and
- 4:39enjoyed it. OK.
- 4:40So I'm going to get back to him. So obviously when you have book
- 4:43to screen adaptations, a lot of readers are the ones that are
- 4:47first there in line to see it. Do you think readers are harder
- 4:51to impress than normal watchers? 100% I would say the casting
- 4:59drama around off campus last year 100% proved that.
- 5:03And just like with everything, the amount of arguments you not
- 5:06so much now. And I don't know if that's just
- 5:07that the side of TikTok that I'm on, but you know, you always
- 5:12used to see it on TikTok. People arguing over like their
- 5:15fan cast for actor and tog and Magnolia parks and just because
- 5:21like people see things visually in their head and you're never
- 5:24going to you're never going to make everyone happy.
- 5:27It's impossible. Yeah, I completely agree.
- 5:29But also, I think even aside from the visuals and like the
- 5:32cast, when you read books, you obviously you start to get
- 5:39really strong understanding of like what a good narrative arc
- 5:43looks like, like what the story beats are, what makes a good
- 5:47plot. So then like if they miss out
- 5:50key parts in a film that you feel provide a lot of context or
- 5:54emotional death, that's also disappointing.
- 5:57And I know that people said that about one thing we're going to
- 6:01talk about later. And yeah, I 100% think it's
- 6:05harder to please. I know I'm harder to please when
- 6:07I watch a film that I've already read as a book or even just if I
- 6:10know it's a book, like with the upcoming, upcoming Wuthering
- 6:13Heights, for instance. Like that's the one we're going
- 6:15to talk about as well. But you when you know it has
- 6:18such strong source material, your expectations are higher.
- 6:22I agree. And not that we support the
- 6:25author of these books in any way, but I do remember watching
- 6:28especially the final Harry Potter film and some of the
- 6:32things left out that just, like, creates so much emotional, like,
- 6:36depth to the story that were then left out in the film.
- 6:38I was like, why on earth would they change that?
- 6:41Like, it just. It baffled me.
- 6:43Yeah. And I think I think that happens
- 6:45a lot. There are obviously some
- 6:47instance we've spoken about before where actually the film
- 6:49ends up becoming better because the books weren't that great,
- 6:51like Vampire Diaries. Yeah.
- 6:54But yeah, I do. I agree.
- 6:56Yeah. Do you actually have a book to
- 6:59screen that you've watched that you think is better than the
- 7:00book other than Vampire Diaries? Oh my God, you're really putting
- 7:04me on the spot there. I'm trying to think.
- 7:06I know that I'm trying to think because I feel like we spoke
- 7:09about this before and I actually prefer this.
- 7:12I can't remember. Yeah, cuz I was just thinking,
- 7:14although Normal People is one of my favorite books ever, I
- 7:17actually think the screen adaptation is so perfect.
- 7:20Really. Yeah, so perfect.
- 7:23And I think that's bold words, right when the book is so up
- 7:26there for you. Yeah, it's literally like one of
- 7:28your favorite books in the. World.
- 7:29So yeah. So I was really pleased with
- 7:31that one. I definitely think there
- 7:33probably have been, but there are plenty of films that I've
- 7:36never read the book of. Like Practical Magic is one of
- 7:38my favorite book, favorite films of all time, like Timeless for
- 7:43me and it doesn't doesn't need to be spooky season for me to
- 7:46watch it. But I've never read the book.
- 7:48So actually I don't know the comparison and sometimes I will
- 7:53never read the book so. Yeah, that's like I am Legend.
- 7:56I never knew when I watched I'm Legend, like back in whatever
- 7:59year it came out, that that was based on a book.
- 8:02I love that film. I think it's a really good like
- 8:04horror apocalypse film with Will Smith.
- 8:07And obviously in the film it's zombies, but apparently in the
- 8:09book it's vampires, which is completely different.
- 8:12Well, it did come out in that whole like kind of era of zombie
- 8:16movies, so it doesn't it. So it makes sense that they just
- 8:18kind of like changed it to go with that.
- 8:20Yeah. But yeah, there's so many things
- 8:22where I'm like, oh, I should read the book now.
- 8:25Yeah, but you never get around to it all, do you?
- 8:27No, because then you feel like you know the story and you're
- 8:29like, yeah, so let's move on to the things that are kind of
- 8:32coming this year that we're already a little bit emotionally
- 8:35invested in. And whether or not that's
- 8:36because we're excited, scared, or just curious to see how it's
- 8:39going to go. We're not going to go through
- 8:42everything, but we will provide a list like in the notes of the
- 8:45episode. Maybe we'll post it over on
- 8:47Instagram, like a full list of everything that we know that's
- 8:49coming. So.
- 8:50Obviously this is already out. It technically came out in the
- 8:54US at the end of last year, but it came out here in January.
- 8:58I'm talking about this because I've seen it, but Paul hasn't,
- 9:01and I need you guys to help me persuade her to watch it.
- 9:04And that's heated rivalry. Obviously, it's based on books.
- 9:09Personally, I actually haven't read the books, and I also
- 9:12haven't read any MMM romance books.
- 9:15I don't know if you have. Not where it hasn't built into a
- 9:18story, like not where it's like specifically, MMM, romance, but
- 9:21it has built in, you know, obvious ones.
- 9:23But. Yeah, that's the same as me.
- 9:25I haven't specifically read like they're the main couple.
- 9:27It's a specific MMM romance, But so I haven't read these books.
- 9:32Apparently the books are not great.
- 9:35OK, apparently they're written like quite fanfic vibes.
- 9:41I don't know how true that is. That's just what I'm seeing
- 9:43floating around on the Creeds. Take that with a piece of salt.
- 9:47But the show, I've rewatched it already and I've made Whitney,
- 9:53my sister, watch it. She loved it too.
- 9:54She doesn't even like romance. And guys, it's sports romance,
- 9:58which Tom loves. It's ice hockey, you know?
- 10:03But anyway, this is, I think, the perfect example of where we.
- 10:06I've watched the show but haven't read the source
- 10:08material. And then it blew me away.
- 10:10Would I have felt the same if I'd read the books?
- 10:12Who knows? Yeah, Because I would have had
- 10:14different expectations of maybe what they look like, what the
- 10:18bits that were cut from the story, as we mentioned before.
- 10:21But as it stands, I think that is the most amazing TV show I've
- 10:25watched in a long time. Everything about it, from the
- 10:28cast, the acting, the romance, the score, the soundtrack, the
- 10:32way it was shot, even though it's on a really small budget
- 10:35apparently. I feel like she feels really
- 10:36passionately. About this six star watch guys 6
- 10:39star really, and you know I'm about to.
- 10:41Blow you away because I started watching it and I turned it off
- 10:44about halfway through the 1st episode.
- 10:45You've got to get, I'm bored. You've got to get through the
- 10:47first episode because Whitney was the same.
- 10:49And then I was like, you know, you need to cut.
- 10:51It's a slow burn. There's too much other stuff
- 10:53going on for me to watch at the moment and I'm not a big like
- 10:56considering we're talking about TV and film.
- 10:58I'm not a big TV film person. I have like specific shows that
- 11:02I do watch that, you know, I don't watch a lot of it.
- 11:06So maybe I'll just save it for a time where there's a lull and
- 11:09thing that I am that I don't have to.
- 11:11Watch it is only 6 episodes as well but it is a slow burn so
- 11:15you have to like invest but I will eat my socks.
- 11:20Actually, I shouldn't say that because.
- 11:21We've been through this. There's always something.
- 11:25But I will eat my socks if you don't like it.
- 11:27OK, fine, OK, fine. So the other one that we're
- 11:30going to talk about that was recently just released, which
- 11:31again you've seen, I haven't seen it yet, is People We Meet
- 11:35on Vacation. The new M Hen film was your
- 11:39least favorite M Hen book known. She's the big Emily Henry lover.
- 11:42I am, she's one of my faves. So I haven't read the book and
- 11:45haven't watched the film. I'm not being very useful to
- 11:47this episode, but I do really like the look of the film so I
- 11:52am going to watch it soon. I think, again, Tor will really
- 11:55like this because it's cheesy. It is a bit cheesy, yeah.
- 11:59Knowing the types of romance films that Tor likes, I think
- 12:02this plays into it. But we have very different
- 12:06tastes in that regard. So I didn't like it.
- 12:10I gave it three stars. But the book or the show, the
- 12:13show, the film, the film on Netflix, the book I gave four
- 12:16stars. But the more I think about it,
- 12:18the less if I read it now, it would have been less than that.
- 12:21It's by far my least favorite of hers.
- 12:23I'm not a big friends to lovers person anyway.
- 12:26That's not one of my favorite tropes at all.
- 12:29So you know, it was never going to be like up there would be
- 12:33treating Happy Place, which do have my favorite tropes in.
- 12:37But my biggest issue with that adaptation to screen was
- 12:41actually the actress who plays the main character, because I
- 12:45just didn't like her and I don't she's she's in.
- 12:48I know, I'm really sorry guys, I'm being not very nice here,
- 12:51but she is in what's it called my like my Lady Jane or
- 12:54something. Oh yeah, yeah.
- 12:55That fantasy one, I'm prying. All the girls in our group chat
- 12:58loved it. I didn't like it because I
- 13:00didn't like her and that either. Oh, OK, fine.
- 13:02So it was so sad that they didn't do a second season of
- 13:04that. I can't say I was sad, but I
- 13:07just felt like she turned the main character of people we meet
- 13:11on vacation into like a caricature almost.
- 13:15It didn't feel believable to what we'd read.
- 13:18And personally, I think what is so special about Emily Henry
- 13:21books is they're not cheesy. They have this like almost
- 13:24element of melancholy to them. Especially like Happy Place in
- 13:28Beech Read. They kind of had this sad
- 13:30undertone. Sort of book lovers.
- 13:32It was the first romance book I had literally literally read as
- 13:35an adult and I was just like, this is just so great.
- 13:38It didn't because I am a cheesy romance type of girl, but I just
- 13:41I did love book lovers because it did have you know, more of
- 13:45like a serious underclined parts of it.
- 13:47Her books have a lot of depth. You know, they look at like,
- 13:50family relationships as well as the romance.
- 13:52And I felt that's what the film adaptation lost.
- 13:55It was just pure romance, really happy go lucky.
- 14:00Which I don't mind in a film. She was, yeah.
- 14:02So that's why I think you'll like it.
- 14:03It was kind of, to me, anyone but you vibes.
- 14:06Is that what it's called the Sidney Sweeney one?
- 14:08That's. My favorite?
- 14:10Yeah, so I think Tor will like it.
- 14:12Me, I just thought it was fine. Yeah, I was a bit disappointed.
- 14:17So 1 you have seen. Well.
- 14:21Not the new season. Well, Bridgeton, I started
- 14:25episode one last night and I'm about to blow you all away.
- 14:29You didn't like it? I turned it off with 20 minutes
- 14:31left to go on the first episode because I was like, I'm bored.
- 14:34Maybe this is a mood you're in then if you're finding this
- 14:37with, maybe you're not in a romance mood.
- 14:40There's probably a reason for it and we're going to talk about
- 14:42that show next. But I mean, don't get me wrong,
- 14:45it was fine, but I just wasn't like with Colin and Penelope's
- 14:50season, I was just like, so invested already.
- 14:54Like really, I'm so invested. I think it's probably partly to
- 14:59do with the fact that I love the actress.
- 15:01I love Nicola Lachlan. Is that how you pronounce her
- 15:04last name? I fucking adore her.
- 15:06Yeah, I really like. Her so and I just liked their
- 15:08whole again. I mean, I'm not actually a
- 15:11friends lovers person, but it was this whole kind of like
- 15:13longing, the yearning. It was just, I don't know, it
- 15:16was something about it that I've really loved.
- 15:19But yeah, with this season so far and I have given it less
- 15:23than one episode. Not think I don't like it and
- 15:25I'm not going to watch it, but I just I was retired and instead
- 15:30of being like I need to finish, as I've said first I was like,
- 15:33I'm just going to turn it off and read my book.
- 15:34Yeah. So have you started it yet?
- 15:37Not yet. I'm going to start it tomorrow.
- 15:38OK. I've got a book to edit for a
- 15:40client guys. I need.
- 15:43I need to be sensible before I start binging.
- 15:45That I'm so excited because Benedict is like a character
- 15:49throughout the previous seasons has really intrigued me.
- 15:53I will say again, me and Tor kind of have opposing favourites
- 15:57and preferences in this show. Queen Charlotte the spin off is
- 16:01my favorite. Then season 1.
- 16:04Season 2 I do. I did like a lot more on
- 16:06rewatch. Season 2 is and never will be
- 16:10beaten in my eyes like Anthony and Kate.
- 16:14I just love them. That's how I feel about George
- 16:17and Charlotte. Oh they're so cute.
- 16:20Penelope and Colin I didn't enjoy and I still didn't enjoy
- 16:22it and rewatch. Just finished the rewatch,
- 16:23didn't enjoy it so I'm intrigued to see what I'll think.
- 16:26Have you read any of the Bridgeton books?
- 16:29I have, but I'm not going to carry on.
- 16:31The series didn't love. I enjoyed them when I was
- 16:35reading them, but I felt like I was reading them because of the
- 16:37show and I was like, actually like, I don't love them to read
- 16:41them. So yeah, I'm just, I'm just not
- 16:45going to carry on because there were loads of things that I
- 16:47actually really do want to read. And I felt like I was in a phase
- 16:50in life I was reading because I felt like I had to because of
- 16:53book talk, when actually I don't fucking have to.
- 16:55I really like the show and that's enough for me.
- 16:57Yeah, I haven't read the main Bridgeton series, but I read the
- 17:01Queen Charlotte book, but obviously that was a bit
- 17:04different because it came out after the show.
- 17:06They wrote it like from the show.
- 17:08Yeah, And it there wasn't much difference between the show and
- 17:13the book. I did really love it.
- 17:15I think I gave it five stars. Oh OK, I did it on originally.
- 17:18Loved the yeah. Yeah, it was just like
- 17:20comforting, I think. But I have no interest in
- 17:23reading the books. Weirdly.
- 17:25I don't know why because I love the show.
- 17:27But what? So this was what I was going to
- 17:29ask. Why do we think because
- 17:30Bridgeton is literally like a worldwide phenomenon.
- 17:33And I think it's not even just like women that love it because
- 17:37actually when Kyle, he won't specifically be like, wait for
- 17:40me to watch that. But when he sits down and
- 17:41watches it, he really enjoys it. And the first season that didn't
- 17:45ever come out, he was like, don't watch an episode without
- 17:47me. It was obviously during COVID.
- 17:49And what do we think it is about Bridgeton that makes it work so
- 17:53well for a book to screen? I think this is where the magic
- 17:56of Shonda Rhimes comes in. Oh, she's.
- 17:59So talented. I mean, we've got obviously
- 18:02Bridgeton, Grey's Anatomy scandal, How to get Away with
- 18:06Murder. Like, she is phenomenal.
- 18:09She's a powerhouse. Yeah.
- 18:11Bridgeton itself, I think, is such a perfect blend of like,
- 18:17using all of your sensors. When you watch it, you know we
- 18:21have all these pop songs turned into orchestral.
- 18:23Pieces. I think that's one of my
- 18:24favorite things about the TV show.
- 18:26Me too. The costumes, the settings like,
- 18:31and then the actual plot itself is part mystery.
- 18:34Like you do have a mystery underpinning the romance because
- 18:37until season 3 you don't know who you miss.
- 18:39Lady Feather, internal, whatever not.
- 18:41Who is it, Lady Whistle? Down.
- 18:42That's it. You don't know who that is.
- 18:45There is bits of plot that are separate to the romance as well,
- 18:50like different friendships and things going on in the
- 18:52background. So there is something for
- 18:54everyone, I think. I think that's what it is.
- 18:56It's like it hits all of the points.
- 18:59There is something about the music specifically, like I'm not
- 19:03a big music person. Like Bronte's like she's into
- 19:06film, she's into music, she's into, you know, breeding.
- 19:09She's very like artsy fartsy. I'm not.
- 19:11I'm just like, if I like it, I like it.
- 19:13Like with Vampire Diaries, I think the person that does the
- 19:15music for Vampire Diaries, like the perfect song's always
- 19:17chosen. But like same with Bridgeton.
- 19:20Like there are certain things about the music that just stay
- 19:23with me. Like I have the instrumental
- 19:27Pitbull give me everything on my phone because it just, it was
- 19:30just placed so perfectly with that moment between Penelope and
- 19:34Colin and it was just done so well.
- 19:36I was like, this is so fucking good.
- 19:38Even though there's those songs to sing along with, I love it.
- 19:41And do you know what song's been included in Season 4?
- 19:46Hayley Williams. Paramore all I wanted.
- 19:48Yeah, my guys, that is in my top five songs ever.
- 19:51I am so excited. I literally just saw that on
- 19:54gems Instagram story this month. Was it?
- 19:55I'm sure it was gems Instagram. So I was like oh OK, nice.
- 19:58Love that. So I'm really excited for that.
- 20:00But yeah, I agree. It's just like so beautiful.
- 20:03And that specific scene in Season 1, right where Daphne and
- 20:07the Duke dance in the rain, the rain starts pouring.
- 20:10It's very Pride and Prejudice and they have that Four Seasons
- 20:14song. That comes on in the background
- 20:17and it's like, oh. It's so cute, just makes it
- 20:20perfect. Yeah, it's very well placed
- 20:23music. Very good choices.
- 20:24I love them. Yeah.
- 20:26OK, we're moving on to a show that I have been screaming at
- 20:31Bronte to watch for the last couple of weeks because I
- 20:34literally just binged it all the way up until what's airing right
- 20:38now, and that is Tell Me Lies. I am seeing everyone talking
- 20:42about this. It is fucking wild, like I've
- 20:46never watched ATV show like it. It is fucking crazy.
- 20:51But I didn't know it was based on books.
- 20:53So again, this is like a I've got no, I've got no comparison
- 20:57for what the books are like. But let me tell you, it is ATV
- 21:00show that everyone should watch. So what is it?
- 21:03Is it romance? Is it drama?
- 21:06So about going too deep into it, it is there is romance and there
- 21:11is drama. It's setting and it's a mystery
- 21:14as a kind of mystery because it's it, it basically starts
- 21:18with these people that are in their 20s, they're at a wedding
- 21:20and then it's it's flashing back to them in college.
- 21:22But there's something going on in the present that you're like,
- 21:24what the Hell's going on here? But I think as women, the thing
- 21:30that you relate to, everyone that I know that has watched it
- 21:33is that the the relationships are so toxic.
- 21:38It is the most toxic thing I've ever watched.
- 21:40You can't look away. But everybody has a Stephen.
- 21:45Like everybody has one of those people.
- 21:47They look back on that relationship from like their
- 21:50younger years where they're like, Oh my God, like I relate
- 21:52so heavily to this right now. It's just, it's so fucked up.
- 21:56But you just cannot look away. And everyone wants a Wrigley.
- 22:02A Wrigley. That's his name.
- 22:05I feel like I'm giving parts away from people that are going
- 22:07to go back and watch Season 1. But yeah, just, oh, it's so
- 22:11good. You have to watch it.
- 22:13OK, I am going to wash it guys. I'll report back on this.
- 22:17I feel like I want to read the books as well.
- 22:19I mean, I'm not fussed about it. Again, it's like, because I'm
- 22:22like so obsessed with the show, I'm like, are the books ever
- 22:24going to live up to it? And from what I've heard, people
- 22:27that have now watched, have read the books and are now watching.
- 22:31I think season 3 is starting to very much deviate away from the
- 22:34books. OK.
- 22:36So I'll be, yeah, I'll be intrigued to see what happened.
- 22:40But why do we think that? Toxic relationships viewers get
- 22:44so hooked on the toxic ones more than like the everyone.
- 22:50What's that, Google? Box Quote Everyone loves a bad
- 22:52boy, Chris. It's so true, I know, but on a?
- 22:58Serious level I think there is something really exciting about
- 23:00like danger and things you know are wrong for you.
- 23:03Your body sort of gets addicted to the adrenaline, doesn't the
- 23:06adrenaline, doesn't it? And the drama I.
- 23:08Think that's the thing like when you think about when I think
- 23:11about my most toxic relationship and I was talking to Amy about
- 23:15this because she's been begging me to watch the show for a
- 23:17couple of years now and we were sat talking about it.
- 23:20I was like, you do like that is literally you're watching you're
- 23:23like, why are you doing this? But then you think back to your
- 23:25young self and I think I was so addicted to the drama in my most
- 23:29toxic relationship. It wasn't actually madly in love
- 23:31with him. I was just hooked on the
- 23:34constant spikes of all my happy sad hormone.
- 23:37Yeah, that's why. It's crazy, I feel like I
- 23:40probably shouldn't watch this at the moment if it's talking about
- 23:44past relationships. Hint hint nudge nudge, right?
- 23:49What else we got on the list off campus?
- 23:52Oh, and if you've been here a while, you'll have seen us talk
- 23:54about the off campus casting drama.
- 23:56Yeah, which was. Just that we can't even go into
- 23:59that because I was talking about.
- 24:00It was wild. Yeah.
- 24:01We're just going around so excited for this show.
- 24:03I'm beyond. Excited, especially after
- 24:06watching Heated Rivalry because, again, ice hockey, yeah, so very
- 24:09excited about that. I personally don't mind the cast
- 24:12as well because at the end of the day, they're college age
- 24:15anyway, so I'm never going to be like, wow, you're so thick
- 24:19because they're just going to feel so much younger than us.
- 24:21Yeah. And I just.
- 24:22Think as well, I think I said this before, it all comes down
- 24:25to like their personalities and how well they can act as to how
- 24:28much you fall in love with the characters, so and the guy
- 24:31that's playing. Garrett is in a film called
- 24:34Along for the Ride on Netflix, which is an adaptation of a
- 24:37Sarah Dessin book that I loved as a teenager.
- 24:40And he was great. He was great in it, Yeah.
- 24:42So I have full faith that he'll be able to deliver Garrett.
- 24:44I have faith in it as well. I feel like most of the like
- 24:47Amazon Prime obviously don't do as much as Netflix, but I feel
- 24:51like the ones that I've I have watched, they've done them
- 24:54really well. So I'm like, I'm excited for it.
- 24:57Yeah, I'm really excited too. And I agree, actually the Amazon
- 24:59Prime ones I think are actually really good, especially compared
- 25:02to Netflix. If you couldn't tell me Netflix
- 25:04got beef. Oh wow.
- 25:07OK, moving swiftly on because we are doing a real torn brunty
- 25:11yapping session right now. Wuthering Heights.
- 25:14I know you're excited as well. Semi excited, not excited for
- 25:17this. I have.
- 25:19Thoughts on Emerald Fennell who is the director right, because
- 25:23she will just like scrap racial context.
- 25:27She'll make it very she's just she's just something.
- 25:33OK. Anyway, so for an instance with
- 25:36her first film that she did, Promising Young Woman, which is
- 25:38about this woman that tries to protect women who have date
- 25:41raped. The message of the film is the
- 25:43police will just fix everything, even though we know that's not
- 25:46true. Oh God.
- 25:47Then Saltburn came out. Saltburn was like really like
- 25:50classist and not great. Although I do actually love the
- 25:54film and I think she did. She did, and I think the
- 25:57cinematography is great. And then comes Wuthering Heights
- 26:00and she released the cast. Margot Robbie's about 10 years
- 26:03older than the role should be. Jacob Elody, even though I love
- 26:06him, everyone knows how much I love him.
- 26:08Is White now? In the book, it's not explicitly
- 26:12stated what race Heathcliff is, but there is a serious thread of
- 26:18racial context throughout it. So he's continuously sort of
- 26:21like degraded and made out to be different and othered because of
- 26:25his skin colour. And he comes into the country
- 26:29through the Liverpool ports, which is obviously where a lot
- 26:31of immigration happened in the British imperialism empire sort
- 26:35of time. I feel like I'm having a
- 26:36history. Lesson right now so.
- 26:39The fact that she's cast him, I'm not keen on anyway.
- 26:43And then she's done interviews about it where she's like, yeah,
- 26:46it's just like how I imagined it when I was reading it when I was
- 26:49like, 14. And, you know, this is like, a
- 26:52really great love story. And it's not a romance.
- 26:55Anyone who's read it knows it's not a romance.
- 26:56I mean, granted, I read it 15 years ago, so my memory is not
- 27:00fresh. So take this with pinched salt,
- 27:02but it's not a romance. And everything from the costumes
- 27:06that I've seen so far looks like it's just going to be the most
- 27:08outlandish, outrageous thing. I mean the trailers.
- 27:11I've seen of it are wild. Me and Amy are going to go to
- 27:13the cinema to see it, but yeah, it looks wild and I think that's
- 27:17what she just. Does with all of her films.
- 27:19It's like what can I do that's the most how can I make it?
- 27:21Eccentric, yeah, rather than. Like what's the best way I can
- 27:26explore these themes, which works in some ways?
- 27:29Like I did actually really enjoy Saltburn.
- 27:32I said it was. Visually.
- 27:34Stunning as well. So I'm excited for the visuals
- 27:36of Wuthering Heights and I do actually love the quirky
- 27:38costumes and stuff. I don't really care about them
- 27:40being historically accurate, but do I think it's going to be like
- 27:43actually Wuthering Heights? No, not like with Amy with.
- 27:46Bridgeton Yeah, she does, my friend.
- 27:49Amy does not like the win win Penelope.
- 27:51Had like, really like, lovely, like almond shaped nails.
- 27:58Yeah. Amy was like, what's going on
- 28:00with her nails? That's not historically
- 28:02accurate. I was like, wow.
- 28:04And she's got eyelashes. On.
- 28:06And her makeup shimmering. Yeah.
- 28:09Which I don't. Mind too much with I literally
- 28:12don't even notice. Things like that.
- 28:14It's so, so like so far over my head.
- 28:18So one I'm very excited about and I actually didn't know about
- 28:21until Bronte told me for when we were planning out this episode
- 28:24is the magic Fire Away tree is getting what is made into a film
- 28:27that's coming out March. Yeah, I think so.
- 28:30End of. March, I'm sure.
- 28:31I saw it was like the 27th of March or something like probably
- 28:34lines up whenever. The next kids half term is
- 28:36because obviously it's Oh yeah, Easter holidays is going to be
- 28:39actually, yeah. One of the.
- 28:41Best kids books of all time 107 Loved those books when I was a
- 28:46kid. I think it's literally what
- 28:47probably. Got me into reading fantasy as a
- 28:50child. Me too.
- 28:52And the fact that it's Enid Blyton, it's just, like, so
- 28:55timeless. Like, my parents loved it.
- 28:58We read it, and then kids, now we're going to get to see this
- 29:00film. Well, Zola listens.
- 29:02To the audiobooks literally every night.
- 29:03She actually, the day that Bronte told me about this, I'd
- 29:08just given Zola the because she's she's only just about to
- 29:12turn 6 in a couple of weeks. And she so obviously she's not
- 29:16reading the book because it's a little bit above her, but she
- 29:19listens to the audio books every night.
- 29:21And she actually took the book into school that morning and
- 29:23gave like a little talk at show and tell about the story and the
- 29:26characters. Oh my God.
- 29:29So I. Was so.
- 29:30Excited that day I got her she when I got her home, I showed
- 29:33her the trailer and she was like, oh can we go to the cinema
- 29:36together, Mummy? So I'm so excited to go and see
- 29:39it and it's got Nicola Lachlan in it, yeah, which is so
- 29:41exciting. And Andrew got.
- 29:43Like loads of big cast, actually.
- 29:45Rebecca Ferguson, I think, as well as the body in it.
- 29:48It looks so good. I actually wanna go see it at my
- 29:50grown age with no kids. Maybe you should come and see
- 29:53it. Yeah, I will.
- 29:56Okay, okay. So the other thing that we have
- 29:58coming is a couple more Co hosts and I feel like I just feel like
- 30:04all of the films are gonna be cursed with all this Blake
- 30:07Lively and Jason Baldoni, whatever his name is, drama
- 30:11still ongoing. I just feel like every film that
- 30:15released is gonna be overshadowed by Blake Lively and
- 30:17Jason Baldoni drama and just also like.
- 30:21Overshadowed just by how much book talk Don't like her.
- 30:24It's wild because it's a big. Divide because some people
- 30:27absolutely love her, but they're most people are like, Oh no, I
- 30:30don't recall her. Yeah, and she's not.
- 30:32For me, I gotta say however, what I will say credit where
- 30:36credit is due is I did read reminders of him back in like
- 30:392020-2021. I bloody loved it.
- 30:42Oh now did I think it was stupid that she called her daughter DM
- 30:46like carpe diem, Yes I did. Did I think it was cheesy as all
- 30:50hell? Yes I did.
- 30:52But did it make me cry? Yes.
- 30:54Am I ashamed to admit that? Maybe slightly, but.
- 30:58It was, it was five years ago, it was five years ago, but we
- 31:00can let it. Go the world.
- 31:01Was a different time. I've watched the trailer for
- 31:04that one. Yeah.
- 31:05And I was like, hmm, this is not all how I imagined the cast.
- 31:08OK, so then I sort of felt like the off campus lot disappointed
- 31:14with the cast. Obviously I didn't make a tick
- 31:15tock video about it, but yeah, I was like, that's not how I
- 31:19imagined it. But I probably won't go and see
- 31:21it anyway. I don't think I.
- 31:23Will like at some point if it's on Sky or if it's on Netflix or
- 31:26something. I probably would if I had
- 31:28nothing else to watch, but it's certainly not a film I am
- 31:30rushing to the cinema to go and see.
- 31:33However, I do think when Verity comes out I will go and watch it
- 31:38at the cinema because I quite like the casting, I really like
- 31:43Anne Hathaway, I love Anne Hathaway and I actually also
- 31:46quite like Dakota Johnson. I know a lot of people don't,
- 31:49but I actually quite like her. So I think I think that the
- 31:53casting was done really well. They actually look very similar
- 31:55to how I imagined them in my mind.
- 31:58And Verity is the only coho I've ever read and really enjoyed the
- 32:02kind of like that other one we read Heartbones.
- 32:04But it was so early in my like romance reading era that I'm
- 32:07like, if I read it now I wouldn't have liked it.
- 32:10But I am excited for Verity. I'm excited for Verity.
- 32:13That is her other book that I enjoyed.
- 32:15I actually think she should write more thrillers in that
- 32:17genre because I think she was really good at it.
- 32:20The books I didn't like were ugly love IDNF that one and
- 32:25that's when I stopped reading it.
- 32:26But Verity? I agree.
- 32:27I'm really excited for that. I personally don't love Dakota
- 32:30Johnson. I don't think she's great, but I
- 32:32feel like that will be a role she'll be OK in because it's not
- 32:35like the main kind of creepy role in it is Verity herself,
- 32:40right? So I'm excited for it.
- 32:43I will probably go and see that one, even though I don't love
- 32:45Colleen Hoover. So that's what's coming out this
- 32:48year. But there's a lot more that are
- 32:50coming out beyond 2026 that we just don't have a date yet for.
- 32:54There's so many that we're excited for.
- 32:56Personally, what I'm excited for is the rest of the Emily Henry
- 32:59adaptation. Tor hasn't read all the books,
- 33:01but I have and I'm particularly excited for Beach Read, which I
- 33:06have read, yeah. And you did enjoy.
- 33:08That one, right? I did enjoy that one, yeah.
- 33:10Happy place. I'm a little.
- 33:11Bit nervous for because I found out that Jennifer Lopez is
- 33:13producing it. Questionable after she did that
- 33:16weird musical film about herself last year.
- 33:19Did she? Yeah.
- 33:20You're not, did you not? See all the viral videos where
- 33:23she was like describing herself as like a crazy kid in Brooklyn
- 33:26even though she was like from a private school.
- 33:29Anyway, that's a whole different story.
- 33:31But I'm a bit nervous about that, I can't lie.
- 33:34So I'm just hoping they're a bit better than people we meet on
- 33:36vacation. And are we getting all of?
- 33:38The M hands next year or we don't know.
- 33:41We don't know because we know we're actually getting all of
- 33:43them so far, aren't we? They've all been picked up apart
- 33:46from the most recent one. Yeah, exactly.
- 33:48But. I don't know if we know the
- 33:49dates. Interesting.
- 33:52Yeah, because we don't actually have.
- 33:53Official cast. I don't think for any of them
- 33:55either. OK.
- 33:58I don't know, I'm thinking about something different, but we, we.
- 34:02I mean, we touched on this. Earlier we're getting a lot of
- 34:04romance coming with some huge ones as well.
- 34:08Which Bok talk? Talk are going to be so.
- 34:12Invested in, we've got 2 of Elsie Silver's series, we've got
- 34:16Rose Hill and Chestnut Springs coming, which I think again,
- 34:20people are just going to be so hard to please.
- 34:23So I'm really excited for them because I'm not going to get
- 34:26worked up over castings. I'm just not.
- 34:28I would still give them a chance, see how I feel about
- 34:31them after I watch them. We've also got Rebel Blue Ranch
- 34:34coming. That's what I'm.
- 34:36Excited for and you never. Know you might like the TV,
- 34:39depending on who does the TV series and how they do it from
- 34:41the books because you don't like her writing.
- 34:44So it could be that you actually end up don't minding the series.
- 34:48You don't know, you don't know. I'll give it an.
- 34:51Open mind because in terms of like themes.
- 34:53Of the book of like Chestnut Springs and Rebel Blue Ranch.
- 34:55They're so similar. Yeah, like, obviously the
- 34:58writing's completely different. It's not like they've copycatted
- 35:00each other. But in terms of like overall
- 35:02vibes, romance, kind of westermy, Yeah, they're very
- 35:05similar. They are.
- 35:06So actually, you don't know what is gonna.
- 35:09You're gonna have to give it a chance.
- 35:10If it if it comes out on the TV, fine.
- 35:13I will give it a chance, guys, guys.
- 35:18On top of that, we also have the Twisted series by Anna Huang.
- 35:21Yeah, guys. I've never read them, never read
- 35:24them. I've read them, enjoyed them not
- 35:26nothing like not the best in the whole world, but I do really
- 35:29enjoy reading Anna Huang when I'm just like I need some I need
- 35:32to just like mindlessly read some romance.
- 35:35Yeah, 100% so and but there is a beloved on book talk as well.
- 35:40So that's going to be and I think that's also been being
- 35:44done by Prime. So that will be interesting.
- 35:47And also we have that's. What I was thinking about
- 35:51earlier when I. Was thinking of M hen it
- 35:53happened 1 summer. Tessa Bailey is releasing Nina
- 35:56Dobrev spin cast in it. The only thing she ever did
- 36:02well, I don't like. Guys, other.
- 36:05Than Rebel Blue Ranch we're definitely heading into a bit of
- 36:10a romance era with television like this year, next year, which
- 36:15I'm excited for because. Even though it sounds like I
- 36:17hate it, I actually do love romance more than anything.
- 36:21I just hope that they give us 2000s and 90s ROM com vibes
- 36:26where it's not so cheesy. Like I love things like The
- 36:29Holiday or Devil Wears Prada or Clueless.
- 36:34I mean, we're getting Devil Wears Prada 2 this year as well,
- 36:36actually. That's a book to screen
- 36:37adaptation and we're very excited for that one.
- 36:39But yeah, I like things where they're not quite so cheesy, so
- 36:42I just hope that some of them are not too over the top.
- 36:46Yeah, I mean. Realistically they are going to
- 36:49be over the top, but yeah. And I don't mind because stuff
- 36:52like that, to me, as always, you watch to watch, whereas I'm
- 36:58normally watch to kind of relax and have a bit of background
- 37:01noise. It's not, I'm not, I'm not
- 37:04analysing what I'm watching. I mean even when I try.
- 37:07Not to. I am, yeah, exactly.
- 37:09But I. Just my brain doesn't work like
- 37:10that with TV and film, so. Count yourself lucky.
- 37:13It's actually a curse, guys. It's like, even last night when
- 37:17I went to see Marty Suprem in cinema, my brain the whole way
- 37:19through was like, this is wrong. That's what Ellie's like.
- 37:22Really. Yeah.
- 37:23It must be a Leo. She judges everything.
- 37:25It must be a Leo thing. Oh, you both just weird.
- 37:29Another thing we do have. Coming out, I'm not sure if it's
- 37:31this year or next year, is Family of Liars, which is a
- 37:35sequel to We Were Liars by I think the author's name is El
- 37:39Lockhart. Oh yeah.
- 37:41This was a prime. Adaptation.
- 37:43Now when the book came out, it was a bit of a Marmite book.
- 37:45People either loved it or they hated it.
- 37:47It's a why, a sort of mystery with a bit of a romance subplot.
- 37:51I loved it and I read it in 2019, so I was not a young
- 37:54adult. But the show was also really,
- 37:59really good. The prime adaptation.
- 38:00I haven't watched her. And do you know who produced it?
- 38:03Julie Plec No. Way so I've been waiting to.
- 38:07Tell Tor this because she's obviously huge Julie Plec fan I
- 38:11like. Everything that she's done, to
- 38:12be fair. Well, everything I know that
- 38:14she's done. If you don't know, it's Vampire.
- 38:16Diaries Originals Vampire Academy, the TV version so I
- 38:21think Tor should watch this. If you've watched it, comment
- 38:25below. If you think Tor should, yeah,
- 38:28tell me. Because she's Julie Plec has
- 38:29also picked up, which we haven't gotten the list to talk about
- 38:32today, but the new Stephanie Garba, Secrets of Alchemy, she
- 38:37has been pegged to produce that. And I can't remember if it's
- 38:40going to be ATV series or a film, but yeah, she's doing
- 38:42that. Interesting.
- 38:44And you know, in If We Were Liars, Who's in it?
- 38:48One of the cast members. Oh, it's got Caroline.
- 38:51Yeah, it's got Candace. Candace Akola.
- 38:54Yeah. King.
- 38:55No. Yeah, she's just is.
- 38:56She got remarried. She's King, I think.
- 38:58Yeah. No, she's not they're.
- 38:59Divorced and she's now with one of the guys that was in the
- 39:03originals, one of the wolves. But anyway.
- 39:05Candace, whatever her name is, who plays Caroline in Vampire
- 39:09Diaries is in We Were Liars, and she's going to be in the sequel
- 39:13Family of Liars. Okay, interesting.
- 39:15And she's really good in it, I think.
- 39:17I will watch that then. Actually, I'm going to watch
- 39:19that. Fine.
- 39:20Moving on to the fantasy heavyweights.
- 39:22Yeah, before we go into specifics, do we think that
- 39:26fantasy readers are harder to please?
- 39:29Absolutely. Even when you just said fantasy,
- 39:32my stomach goes a bit because I'm more nervous about the
- 39:34fantasy adaptations than I am romance or drama or any other
- 39:38genre. Yeah, me too.
- 39:40I just. Think there's so much?
- 39:41Harder to get right with from everything, like the plots, the
- 39:44special effects, the casting, you know, like so much of the
- 39:48casting in fantasy is important because often they're like
- 39:51bigger or taller or they look a certain way, like they look
- 39:54majestic and ethereal and it's so hard to cast that.
- 39:57Yeah. So I'm.
- 40:00I think people are definitely harder to please with fantasy,
- 40:02but for good reason. Yeah, I actually.
- 40:05Think my biggest thing when people adapt fantasy is how they
- 40:08change the plot. Yeah, that is what irks me more
- 40:11than anything. I think that casting is one
- 40:15thing, but changing the actual storyline to something
- 40:19completely different I think is then where you it's a risky
- 40:23business, it's a hugely risky. Business and quite a lot of the
- 40:27ones that have been optioned for films or TV shows, I'm a bit
- 40:30like, I don't think that's actually going to translate that
- 40:34well to screen, but you know, to each their own.
- 40:37I mean, for instance, like Cruel Prince was, the film rights were
- 40:40brought in 2020, in 2017, and it's just never been made.
- 40:45And I actually think that's a good thing because I don't think
- 40:47they'd be able to nail card and with a tail.
- 40:48Do you know what I mean? Like in a good way?
- 40:50I think it would just look weird.
- 40:52But when you read about it, you can sort of get your head around
- 40:55a bit. I kind of would imagine.
- 40:56Cruel prints being made with like, labyrinth vibes, like a
- 41:00bit weird and one yeah, that I can see that actually.
- 41:04And I think it would be better if it was like firmly YA yeah,
- 41:07100% I. Completely agree, but I don't
- 41:09think that they would do it like that.
- 41:10I think that's the reality of it, isn't it?
- 41:14Some of the other like really like big hitters that we got
- 41:18announced last year, maybe even the year before. 4th Wing This
- 41:22one I am. Excited about and I'll tell you
- 41:24why even though I'm a bit funny on Rebecca Yaros bit mixed
- 41:27feelings on her. The book I actually had read
- 41:30before I knew about any of the stuff she'd done.
- 41:32And I really love the book, largely because Violet in it has
- 41:37Ella's Danlos Syndrome, which is what I have.
- 41:39So it was the first time I'd ever experienced that on page.
- 41:41Like kinship in that way. But the thing I'm excited about
- 41:45with it being produced is Michael B Jordan's doing it.
- 41:49And if you look at the films he's done with Ryan Coogler, so
- 41:53Fruitvale Station, Creed, Creed Two, both the Black Panther
- 41:57films and now Sinners, he's getting more and more
- 42:00experienced in producing these incredible blockbusters.
- 42:04Yeah, I mean I. Loved Creed, I loved both the
- 42:09Black Panther films and I just genuinely love him.
- 42:12And I'm really excited to watch Thinners.
- 42:13I'm hoping and I'm hoping to watch it with Kyle this weekend.
- 42:17I'm actually thinking about watching it tonight and feeling
- 42:19like I'm on my period. I want to order a pizza.
- 42:22It's payday. Yeah, watch Thinners.
- 42:24Like I'm feeling that tonight because I'm so excited for it
- 42:26and so many people have watched him and I totally love her, I
- 42:29really think. All like it because it's it's
- 42:31marketed as horror, but it's not scary at all and it's just very
- 42:36it's very emotional, but it's also like simple and not overly
- 42:40complex at the same time and beautifully shot like yeah, I it
- 42:45was one of my favorite films of. Well, actually I watched it this
- 42:47year. It was like the first film in
- 42:48January and it was a five star for me.
- 42:50I loved it. Yeah, I can't.
- 42:51Wait to watch it. So I am excited for 4th Wing,
- 42:57but nervous at the same time. Yeah, because again, it's one.
- 43:01That's going to take a huge budget, so are they going to
- 43:04deliver on like the Dragons and the Thing?
- 43:07Is, and this is, this is something that people are saying
- 43:09like can they make the Dragons like look realistic?
- 43:12And actually anyone that's watched Game of Thrones, I think
- 43:14will tell you they can. And that was like 10 years ago.
- 43:17But is it going to have that? HBO budget you would.
- 43:21Think so with someone like Michael B Jordan doing Yeah and
- 43:23it is prime. Right.
- 43:24It's going to prime. Yes, I think it is.
- 43:27Yeah, so when you think Lord of the Ring of Power like you.
- 43:29Know Wheel of Time, which is on there and plus one good thing I
- 43:33think is Rebecca Yaros is involved in the production team.
- 43:37Yeah, and the screen. Writing essentially, so it's
- 43:39going to be fairly. True to the plot?
- 43:41Yeah, you'd hope so. Yeah, she's also got another
- 43:44three like romance ones coming, like The Last Letter, Things We
- 43:49Left Unsaid and in the likely event, which I'm actually
- 43:53listening to at the moment, funnily enough.
- 43:56So she's got a few coming, one of the other huge fancy ones
- 44:00that got picked up this year, which we actually didn't talk
- 44:02about when we were having this episode, but came to me
- 44:04Quicksilver. This is the one I'm not excited
- 44:07for. Why I?
- 44:09Don't think this is going to. Translate to screen very well,
- 44:11OK, particularly because there's a lot in the middle portion of
- 44:16the book that's just like romance and character building
- 44:20where the pace dips slightly. I just also think they're not
- 44:24going to get the vibes right. I think they're going to make it
- 44:28really cheesy. I don't know why I think that.
- 44:31I've got no grounds of like evidence to believe that.
- 44:33I just can't imagine them portraying this kind of, you
- 44:36know, because in Quicksilver as well, the language is quite
- 44:39modern. I think they're going to make it
- 44:41really cheesy and like almost a bit yai feel like it's.
- 44:45Not going to end up getting made.
- 44:47Yeah, I can actually see. That as well.
- 44:48Do you know what I mean? I think that the the books have
- 44:52lost a bit of momentum as well. Like 1 Brimstone came out, I
- 44:56listened to it, I enjoyed it. But again, it had the same with
- 45:00Quicksilver. This kind of like whole middle
- 45:01trunk where the pacing was just totally off me.
- 45:04So actually my thoughts on Quicksilver and a little bit of
- 45:08disagreement with you here that I might actually enjoy it
- 45:12because I think if it can be picked up by the right
- 45:15screenwriters and they can improve the pacing of the plot.
- 45:20It's the type of book that I wouldn't care if they changed it
- 45:24because I actually think that there's a strong plot in there,
- 45:29But the pacing of the whole story is so fucking off that I
- 45:34actually think it could be better on on film if it was, if
- 45:39it was done by the right people. Do we know if it's?
- 45:41Going to be a show or a movie, I can't remember I.
- 45:44Think it was a film that scares me because.
- 45:46I always feel like fantasy is better translated to series
- 45:49because you've got more room to explore things, but I could see
- 45:52them squeezing that. That book into one film.
- 45:55I mean it would be an. Improvement because the middle
- 45:57section was extremely long. Yeah, that's, but that's what I
- 46:00mean, I'm like. It's the kind of thing that I
- 46:03wouldn't be like, Oh my God, I'm so excited for it, but it is the
- 46:08kind of thing that I'd be like, I'd happily go to the cinema and
- 46:10watch it with the girls. Like if they improve the.
- 46:12Pacing and stuff like that. I'll be happy with that element
- 46:15of it for sure. I just think they're going to
- 46:16really cheapen and make it cheesy.
- 46:18Like I can imagine them doing it a bit like the Mortal
- 46:20Instruments film. I don't know why, I don't know.
- 46:24What leads me to believe this but.
- 46:26It's just a feeling, a good instinct.
- 46:28Yeah, OK. Fine.
- 46:29I mean, there's like we said, there is so much more coming.
- 46:32So we will put a list somewhere when we post the episode so that
- 46:37everyone can look up what's coming who's because there's so
- 46:40many things that are already being casted already in filming
- 46:43etcetera. So we will put a list somewhere.
- 46:45OK, so forgetting about what Hollywood is actually doing
- 46:48right now, what would we green light right now at everything
- 46:53thing you've read? If you could pick anything, what
- 46:55would it be? It would be beautiful.
- 46:57World Where Are You? By Sally Rooney.
- 47:01Fucking cool. Shit.
- 47:02Because it's Sally Rooney. Because the.
- 47:05Adaptations of both her books that do exist, Normal people in
- 47:08conversations with friends were like the most perfect screen
- 47:13adaptations. Like they were very faithful to
- 47:15the book. The cast was just how I imagined
- 47:17them. They broke them down into like
- 47:19mini series with half an hour episodes.
- 47:22It was just perfect. So I'd just love to see her
- 47:25other books do the same and they might be I don't know maybe I'm
- 47:28missing something. Updated info on beautiful world.
- 47:33Where are you an Internet so. But I would just love to see all
- 47:35of them developed because the first two were so good.
- 47:38And then anything else is like quite difficult because like we
- 47:44said before, I'm nervous about fantasy adaptations.
- 47:48Yeah, but say. In it's like the perfect world,
- 47:50it's like you could choose, not that I'd have any idea what I'm
- 47:53talking about with this, but you could choose the director, the
- 47:56production, the budget's not an issue.
- 47:58Like everything. What?
- 48:00What would you have Sword of Kaigen?
- 48:03Which Tor hasn't read. Yeah, yeah, it's.
- 48:06The most? Cinematic fantasy, but when
- 48:09you're reading it, like everything plays like a movie
- 48:12and it's this Asian inspired world on top of a mountain with
- 48:16elemental magic and I can just imagine it being really well
- 48:20done. There's a lot of, like, Asian
- 48:21historical TV shows that are beautiful to watch, and I think
- 48:26this would be the same. But then it would have that
- 48:28slight fantasy element that would make us fantasy lovers
- 48:31happy. I would love to see that,
- 48:33especially because the main character is a female main
- 48:36character in her 30s and a mom of like 4 kids, which is a bit
- 48:39unusual. Yeah.
- 48:40I would love to see that one. Yeah.
- 48:42Interesting. You.
- 48:43What about you? I've got a few.
- 48:45That I feel like could translate quite well if again, like, there
- 48:49was no limitations. There was no limitations.
- 48:52The first is Zodiac Academy. Yeah, I think it could be a
- 48:56really, there's no way it could be movies.
- 48:58It would have to be ATV show. It would have to be like.
- 49:01Vampire Diaries. Like in the structure.
- 49:03Exactly. Exactly.
- 49:05It would have to be done very specifically, very well because
- 49:08there's so much. The the biggest part about that
- 49:11is the relationships. It's not just the it's not just
- 49:14the plot and it's not just a romantic relationship.
- 49:16It's the friendships and all the drama of things that go on in
- 49:18between that make that series what it is.
- 49:20Yeah. So actually it could at Corby a
- 49:23fantastic TV show. I'd also love to see the Legend
- 49:29Born series into ATV or film. I feel like they could be
- 49:32fantastic, like young adult films.
- 49:35That is a really good one. I feel like they could just be
- 49:37so fantastic. And the last one is Sang for
- 49:42Keeps, the Becca Mack, Hoggy Romac.
- 49:45I think that the again for ATV show, like the relationships,
- 49:50the things that happen in them, like if they could weave a bit
- 49:53more like plot through, like the romance and the relationships
- 49:56depending on like how they do off campus, I think it would
- 50:00just be such a lovely, comforting, cute romance series.
- 50:06Those are really good ones. From you, Yeah, I really thought
- 50:09hard about it. Yeah, I agree with all of those
- 50:11actually. Maybe Zodiac Academy a bit I'd
- 50:14be a bit nervous about but. I'd be nervous about all of
- 50:17them, but if it was, if you could like make everything
- 50:20perfect, they would be the best ones, yeah.
- 50:23That I have to say. This as well actually, because
- 50:24there was talk about this actually happening.
- 50:27I I'm sure I heard that it got picked up by BBC but there was
- 50:31talk about Her Majesty's Royal her.
- 50:34Majesty's Royal. Cabin and because.
- 50:36Juno Dawson does write for BBC, doesn't she?
- 50:38So I'm like, what's happening? With that, because I actually
- 50:40think it would be fantastic. Yeah, she writes for.
- 50:43Doctor Who. So I'm surprised she.
- 50:45Yeah, yeah, she's like a TV writer as well as an author.
- 50:48So they would be great because she's already experienced in
- 50:51screen writing. Well, when I first read.
- 50:53HMRCI always said it for me. It's like this blend of like,
- 50:57fancy world mixed with like a really gritty BBC drama, like
- 51:01how I always kind of imagine it in my head, yeah.
- 51:05I will never forget in the first book there's one specific scene
- 51:08and you'll know which bit I mean with, like the cars and the
- 51:11truck near the end with them. Oh yeah.
- 51:16That played out in. My mind, like, the best action
- 51:19movie scene you've ever seen. It was just so well done.
- 51:23Yeah. I would actually really love
- 51:25that one as well. OK, so we talked about the ones
- 51:28that we want to see, but what book would you be absolutely
- 51:31terrified to see adapted to screen?
- 51:35Pretty much. Anything Sarah J Maas.
- 51:37Mine's the same but. Throne of Glass.
- 51:39Specifically like I feel like a Qatar could be done and it could
- 51:42be done quite well. I would be petrified to see
- 51:45Throne of Glass get butchered. I feel the opposite.
- 51:49I really throne of. Glass would be.
- 51:51Easier because of it being less romance and more action fantasy
- 51:57plot. I almost think they'd be able to
- 51:59do it like Rings of Power in that way.
- 52:03I think a Qatar would be really difficult and I don't think any
- 52:06of us would be happy with whoever they cast as the boys.
- 52:10For me it is. It's so funny because these are
- 52:13the authors I try not to talk about anymore, but they are
- 52:15still the books that I love deep down because I've read them
- 52:18before they were problematic. So for me it would be Red Rising
- 52:23because these are these. Big.
- 52:26Well, the first book is like quite dystopian bit Hunger
- 52:28Games. Then books 2 and 3 and beyond
- 52:31and more like these big space operas.
- 52:35They kind of feel a bit like Star Trek, a bit like Star Wars,
- 52:38but also not at the same time. I just don't know.
- 52:42And they have, I'm pretty sure they have been.
- 52:45The film rights have been sold, so I'm pretty sure it is being
- 52:47made. But I just don't think Red
- 52:50Rising, unless it has the biggest budget ever, is going to
- 52:54be as epic and big on the screen as it is in my mind.
- 52:59Because to me, it's like when I read those books, it was like
- 53:03when you watch Avatar. Yeah, you know, there's the
- 53:05scale of it. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 53:06And how? Beautiful it is.
- 53:07And like, how much is happening? That's how I kind of feel like
- 53:11those films need to be. So unless James Cameron's free
- 53:14to direct, I don't think I'd be happy.
- 53:16And then? We'll be waiting 20 years for
- 53:18it. Yeah, exactly.
- 53:20Yeah. Fair, fair.
- 53:22OK. So that's everything we've kind
- 53:24of covered. So to wrap up, yeah, what are
- 53:27you most excited for? I think I'm most.
- 53:30Excited for Rebel Blue Ranch, you know guys, purely because AI
- 53:34absolutely loved the books. Dusty Tucker as Tor knows, one
- 53:38of my favorite book boyfriends ever, but also because I love a
- 53:42show that's like easy watch. And last year we had Ransom
- 53:46Canyon, which was really good actually.
- 53:48Really good and I. Think this could be like that.
- 53:51So I think I'm most excited for Rebel Blue Ranch.
- 53:54I also think it would be the most difficult to, like, get
- 53:56completely wrong. Yeah.
- 53:58So. Yeah, that's mine.
- 53:59What about yours? So I.
- 54:01Feel, I feel like I'm most excited right now for off campus
- 54:07because we know it's soon. So I'm really excited to watch
- 54:10that. But like, looking ahead, I think
- 54:12definitely Chestnut Springs, although I'm also really nervous
- 54:16for that. And fourth thing, I can't wait
- 54:18to just like hear a date or any scrap of news about what's
- 54:22happening with that. That's probably what I'm most
- 54:24excited for. Yeah, I.
- 54:25Completely understand that because that's such a big one as
- 54:28well. Guys, don't forget to comment
- 54:31below what you're most excited for because we would love to
- 54:33hear and also don't forget to comment to persuade Tor to
- 54:36watch. If we were liars, we relies.
- 54:39If we relies can't remember what it's called, whatever, it's good
- 54:41you know. The one we mean.
- 54:42But yeah, we'll be back soon with another episode.
- 54:46But until then, thank you so much for watching and listening.
- 54:50Don't forget to like, share, comment and subscribe.
- 54:53And we will see you in another two weeks for another episode.
- 54:57Bye.
