- 0:03Speaker 1: One, two, three. Hey, it's sad as if we were
- 0:09Speaker 1: to pretend briefly that we were on Shade As this show,
- 0:12Speaker 1: it would just be like whoake moment, White woman in
- 0:21Speaker 1: You know what is one of my number one fantasy
- 0:24Speaker 1: is what is it? It's being bitten by a vampire
- 0:29Speaker 1: or alternately being a vampire and biting someone. But you know,
- 0:33Speaker 1: you know that I'm a spooky, spooky, ooogy, spooky vampire girl.
- 0:39Speaker 1: And in my youth that meant I was really obsessed
- 0:43Speaker 1: with Buffy the vampire slayer interview with the vampire, and
- 0:48Speaker 1: then you know, vampires kind of like weren't as cool
- 0:51Speaker 1: for a minute, I think after Buffy ended and they
- 0:55Speaker 1: became that bitch again with the Twilight song written by
- 1:00Speaker 1: Stephanie Meyer and then turned into a film franchise starring
- 1:07Speaker 1: Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson. Say, I well, was bored
- 1:12Speaker 1: one summer and read all the books, and I have
- 1:14Speaker 1: been on that train ever since. And I have been
- 1:18Speaker 1: trying to force you to watch the Twilight movies for
- 1:22Speaker 1: so long. Finally, on this past Halloween, we watched Twilight
- 1:28Speaker 1: together and now we're going to talk about it with
- 1:31Speaker 1: like the only Twilight stand in the world paying dicks.
- 1:35Speaker 1: This is like a Virgin the show where we give
- 1:38Speaker 1: yesterday's pop culture today's takes. I'm Rose, damn you, and
- 1:42Speaker 1: I'm Fran Toronto. Before we sink our teeth into Twilight,
- 1:46Speaker 1: we are going to talk about what's going on in
- 1:48Speaker 1: pop culture, you know, give a little bit of a
- 1:51Speaker 1: look ahead. Ato. Now that it's a new year, new
- 1:55Speaker 1: me knew us us. I know that we both saw
- 2:03Speaker 1: what is my favorite Marvel franchise, maybe in small part
- 2:08Speaker 1: because I was a preteen and this is you know,
- 2:11Speaker 1: essentially a twink that squirts come out of his hands. Uh,
- 2:15Speaker 1: Spider Man, no way else. Look, that's true, That's literally true,
- 2:20Speaker 1: Like we were teenagers. There's something kind of coming about this,
- 2:23Speaker 1: Like you know, cartoon comic book series. I loved reading
- 2:25Speaker 1: it as a kid. Um, this is like my favorite
- 2:27Speaker 1: superhero of all time. So I had really high X
- 2:30Speaker 1: Spider Man really absolutely, you can shame you all you want.
- 2:33Speaker 1: I have no powers are so lame. Uh, I I
- 2:39Speaker 1: actually can't even I can't even hear to tell me
- 2:41Speaker 1: Spider Man is cooler than the Storm from X Men. No,
- 2:46Speaker 1: not Storm, but cooler than a lot of other superheroes
- 2:48Speaker 1: for sure. But that's the thing that I love about
- 2:50Speaker 1: Spider Man, and something that I loved about this iteration
- 2:53Speaker 1: of him in the latest movie No Way Home, was
- 2:56Speaker 1: that the thing that I've always loved about him, in
- 3:00Speaker 1: addition to a sense of humor, which I think is
- 3:02Speaker 1: very singular, is that he's like a really sensitive guy.
- 3:06Speaker 1: And there there's a lot about his superheroism that like
- 3:10Speaker 1: isn't is kind of like wrapped up in his very
- 3:14Speaker 1: like kidlike heartful decision making skills, and like, I thought
- 3:19Speaker 1: that this movie handled that so well in such a
- 3:22Speaker 1: beautiful way. What did you think of the movie? You know, Listen,
- 3:25Speaker 1: I tend to like some of the more off the
- 3:29Speaker 1: beaten path superheroes rather than kind of like the Big
- 3:34Speaker 1: three that get reinterpreted over and over again Batman, Superman,
- 3:37Speaker 1: Spider Man, Like I think we've seen enough of them,
- 3:41Speaker 1: But that is like kind of the idea that this
- 3:45Speaker 1: movie is based off of. It is like, we have
- 3:47Speaker 1: all these spider Men, let's throw them together. And like
- 3:50Speaker 1: I will admit that I did even though I like
- 3:53Speaker 1: knew it was coming, not because I'd seen spoilers, but
- 3:55Speaker 1: like we all knew Andrew Garfield and Tolby McGuire, we're
- 3:59Speaker 1: going to show up. But when they did, I still
- 4:01Speaker 1: felt giddy. And I haven't even seen that Andrew Garfield
- 4:03Speaker 1: Spider Man movie. You know, when we I loved the
- 4:06Speaker 1: Tubby McGuire movies, I think I kind of forget I
- 4:09Speaker 1: like to the first two. The third one, well, the
- 4:10Speaker 1: third a third one nobody likes. Um. I mean the
- 4:13Speaker 1: third one is very camp. I think it's very fun
- 4:15Speaker 1: to watch, but for me, like you kind of forget
- 4:18Speaker 1: that all the villains are like these prestige actors. It's
- 4:22Speaker 1: giving very much like Harry Potter, like where every actor
- 4:27Speaker 1: is like well has been dominated for an Oscar. Yeah,
- 4:30Speaker 1: and so like I actually love like as a kid.
- 4:32Speaker 1: I don't think I caught onto like the nuances of
- 4:34Speaker 1: at Willem Dafoe performance, but when he comes back it
- 4:37Speaker 1: it is so like it balanced like drama with I
- 4:41Speaker 1: think a kind of camp that like Willem Dafolk kind
- 4:44Speaker 1: of brings into a role in a really funny way.
- 4:47Speaker 1: It did almost feel like a character from an A
- 4:49Speaker 1: twenty four movie, like found his way into a Spiderman film.
- 4:56Speaker 1: Those that is such a whip smart assessment, but something
- 5:00Speaker 1: else as ros mentioned. The fact that they were all
- 5:04Speaker 1: able to perform an extremely different kind of sensitive guy
- 5:10Speaker 1: was so funny. And the way they like had these
- 5:12Speaker 1: kind of little moments of bickering that were kind of
- 5:15Speaker 1: revolving around how sensitive they all are and how like
- 5:18Speaker 1: kind of like you know, kid like they are still
- 5:21Speaker 1: was so like well done. I thought Andrew Garfield's Spider
- 5:25Speaker 1: Man specifically was just really nuanced and self aware. It
- 5:29Speaker 1: was great, But I mean, the big takeaway of the
- 5:32Speaker 1: Multiple Spider Man for me was that Andrew and Toby
- 5:35Speaker 1: should have kiss should have There was a there was
- 5:37Speaker 1: a vibe that scene where they like did the backcracking.
- 5:42Speaker 1: Oh my god, hello there, mama. That was a fan
- 5:45Speaker 1: fiction waiting to be rid. Speaking of fan service, this
- 5:49Speaker 1: is also, you know, the first time in Marvel history
- 5:51Speaker 1: where they made an entire movie using only a meme
- 5:56Speaker 1: as source material, which is the three Spider Man spointing
- 5:59Speaker 1: at each other. But the movie just kept like winning
- 6:03Speaker 1: me back, you know what I mean. Like when doctor
- 6:06Speaker 1: Strange came in, I was like, is this too many characters?
- 6:08Speaker 1: But then I was like, actually, doctor Strange is a
- 6:10Speaker 1: great character, and and it's really really funny and like
- 6:12Speaker 1: grounded the film in in in an interesting way, and like,
- 6:15Speaker 1: like there's a moment that Andrew Garfield has that brings
- 6:19Speaker 1: a lot of closure to his own film franchise, and
- 6:23Speaker 1: I was like, oh, is this too much closure? But
- 6:24Speaker 1: then that moment happened, and like that was just so yeah.
- 6:29Speaker 1: I was like, I just like my heart just broke.
- 6:33Speaker 1: It was so well done. I just thought the movie.
- 6:34Speaker 1: It was my number one of the year period. I
- 6:37Speaker 1: loved really, absolute, absolutely well. Speaking of wizards, as Doctor
- 6:42Speaker 1: Strange was you know a wizard in in Spider Man.
- 6:46Speaker 1: I think you haven't watched it, but the Harry Potter
- 6:49Speaker 1: twenty Year of Union just came out on hreo. Max.
- 6:52Speaker 1: I'm going to go fresh my coffee while you talk
- 6:54Speaker 1: about this one second. Oh thanks, thanks. I mean our
- 6:59Speaker 1: first episode ever was about Harry Potter, so I feel
- 7:02Speaker 1: like it must be discussed. Listen. It was kind of boring.
- 7:08Speaker 1: What kind of interesting tasts do you have for us? Rows? Well,
- 7:12Speaker 1: I think the most The funniest thing to me was
- 7:16Speaker 1: that I was really curious about what they were going
- 7:19Speaker 1: to do about the you know she who must not
- 7:21Speaker 1: be named of it at all? Um she did appear.
- 7:26Speaker 1: There were a couple of interview segments with her, but
- 7:29Speaker 1: while everyone else's like interviews were presented just like as
- 7:33Speaker 1: they were all of hers, had a little box on
- 7:37Speaker 1: the side that said recorded in twenty nineteen to make
- 7:41Speaker 1: it very clear, like we filmed this before she came
- 7:45Speaker 1: out as a turf, which I just thought was like
- 7:48Speaker 1: very like interestingly self aware, and it made me curious
- 7:53Speaker 1: just like about the future of the way that she
- 7:57Speaker 1: will interact with Harry Potter as it's presented to a
- 8:02Speaker 1: mainstream audience. You know, these like anniversaries will keep happening.
- 8:06Speaker 1: We have the secrets of Dumbledore coming out. This sear
- 8:10Speaker 1: like Harry Potter is not going anywhere and she will
- 8:14Speaker 1: forever be connected to it. So like how is that
- 8:17Speaker 1: going to be man not to get like two into
- 8:20Speaker 1: the weeds of it. But like I think that if
- 8:21Speaker 1: you're going to involve JK Rolling, that little box should
- 8:25Speaker 1: say like j K. Rowling said, X, Y and Z,
- 8:30Speaker 1: and these are things. This is context that is important
- 8:33Speaker 1: for you to know when you consume things about her,
- 8:36Speaker 1: you know what I mean, Like we said on episode one,
- 8:38Speaker 1: like the key to like getting out of this is
- 8:40Speaker 1: not saying like cancel j K rolling, she's out, like
- 8:43Speaker 1: we're never seeing her again. It's that history has to
- 8:46Speaker 1: stick to her in order for us all to collectively
- 8:51Speaker 1: move on and to continue to like consume the things
- 8:54Speaker 1: that we love, which is Harry Potter. You know, it
- 8:56Speaker 1: did make me think thank god J R. Tolkien like
- 9:00Speaker 1: died decades ago, because if he had Twitter, like we
- 9:04Speaker 1: would not have been able to do our New Year's Eve.
- 9:07Speaker 1: Lord of the Rings rewatched because I'm sure he would
- 9:09Speaker 1: be canceled. Canceled. Yeah, I mean, I it's so I
- 9:13Speaker 1: really missed those movies. That was like really as satiating rewatching.
- 9:18Speaker 1: Any key takeaways from watching the first Lord of the
- 9:20Speaker 1: Rings movie. Um, for the thousandth time, it is just
- 9:24Speaker 1: so gay. It's so gay, Like there's no women except
- 9:29Speaker 1: r Owen, who's like like you know, she like comes
- 9:34Speaker 1: in in the scene and like does it dip and
- 9:36Speaker 1: like say its fronto and like yes, queen. Um, I've
- 9:41Speaker 1: loved when Bilbo turns into a monster and it is
- 9:44Speaker 1: essentially like deassified. Um he hit the anti sleigh button. Yeah,
- 9:50Speaker 1: he does get yasified for for for the second movie,
- 9:53Speaker 1: doesn't he also? Like, Um, Gandalf and Saramon are very
- 9:58Speaker 1: much like you know says like you get that energy
- 10:02Speaker 1: a lot. There's just tension that I didn't see there
- 10:05Speaker 1: when I watched it, you know, as a teen, and
- 10:07Speaker 1: I was a super fan. Rose was a super fan.
- 10:10Speaker 1: I owned like the visual companions, I owned, like the
- 10:13Speaker 1: ring from like the official catalog that I wore around
- 10:16Speaker 1: my neck like I was that girl. I honestly, I'm
- 10:19Speaker 1: going to watch the second and third movies now. I
- 10:21Speaker 1: I need I will be as well, because I need
- 10:24Speaker 1: something to keep me busy um between Sunday's. Literally, all
- 10:29Speaker 1: I do now is wait for a new episode of
- 10:32Speaker 1: Yellow Jackets to come out. Okay, fran you finally watched
- 10:35Speaker 1: it last night, finally. What do you think this episode? Well,
- 10:38Speaker 1: I feel a little goaded. I feel like you told
- 10:41Speaker 1: me that this franchise was not scary. And the opening
- 10:45Speaker 1: scene is a woman getting like impaled in a grave
- 10:49Speaker 1: and like a scary mask guy. And well, you and
- 10:52Speaker 1: I just have different ideas of what scary is. So
- 10:57Speaker 1: I think it's more of a you know, gory psychological thriller.
- 11:03Speaker 1: I would not call it scared. I would I will say,
- 11:06Speaker 1: you know, a a warning to the stoner's out there.
- 11:10Speaker 1: This is a braided narrative. Okay, so braided narratives are
- 11:14Speaker 1: extremely difficult to follow and comprehend when you're stoned. And
- 11:18Speaker 1: this is like a basically two timelines alongside each other,
- 11:23Speaker 1: one in the future, one in the past of a
- 11:26Speaker 1: kind of dystopian Lord of the Flies esque survival story. Yeah. Someone, um,
- 11:32Speaker 1: someone I follow on Twitter. His name's Nolan. He's so funny.
- 11:37Speaker 1: He put it really perfectly yesterday he said, um, yellow
- 11:41Speaker 1: Jackets is lost for swift ease and could not be
- 11:46Speaker 1: more true, and that that is truly all you need
- 11:48Speaker 1: to know and the best recommendation I can give anyone. Obviously,
- 11:52Speaker 1: we can't get get really two into it because fran
- 11:54Speaker 1: I don't want to spoil it for you. I don't
- 11:56Speaker 1: care about spoiling our listeners, but you I want you
- 11:59Speaker 1: to able to experience it. But you know, the girls
- 12:03Speaker 1: are girling. Everyone is so good. Juliette Lewis, Oh my god,
- 12:08Speaker 1: Tawny Cypress is like a revelation to me. I think
- 12:11Speaker 1: she's so amazing. Christina Ricci, oh my god. And Melanie
- 12:15Speaker 1: Lynskey say her name. I have been standing her since
- 12:19Speaker 1: ever after in Coyote Ugly and I'm happy to see
- 12:22Speaker 1: her like getting these roles that give her a little
- 12:26Speaker 1: bit more of what she's do And there's a moment
- 12:29Speaker 1: coming you'll see in a few episodes in where Christina
- 12:33Speaker 1: Ricci does something too a song from Fandom of the Opera,
- 12:37Speaker 1: and it's just like the best thing I've seen on
- 12:39Speaker 1: TV and forever. Of course it has to do with
- 12:43Speaker 1: fanom of the Opera in some way. Of course, of course,
- 12:46Speaker 1: you know, I'm sorry to bring it up, but I
- 12:49Speaker 1: haven't seen you in a while. And the last episode
- 12:52Speaker 1: of End just like that was worth a brief discussion.
- 12:57Speaker 1: Um started with shady As saying, yes, Queen, Oh my god,
- 13:02Speaker 1: electric chair what Although I do have to say I
- 13:08Speaker 1: really liked this episode. I think the episodes are getting
- 13:11Speaker 1: better and better. I mean, like they still contain these
- 13:15Speaker 1: really cringing moments and awful writing. But I think the
- 13:21Speaker 1: scene with Miranda, despite the cringing nous of Jadaz like,
- 13:27Speaker 1: was really good and I really loved the confrontation that
- 13:33Speaker 1: it led to between Carrie and Miranda. It felt like
- 13:38Speaker 1: that thing that Sex in the City did so well,
- 13:40Speaker 1: which was taking heightened comedy, heightened sexuality, and heightened interpersonal
- 13:45Speaker 1: drama and blending them all together in a really perfect way.
- 13:49Speaker 1: And then also what I loved in this most recent
- 13:51Speaker 1: episode was when Carrie texted Samantha about talking about her
- 13:56Speaker 1: on the podcast, and like the score came in and
- 13:59Speaker 1: it sound own did like the Sex and the City
- 14:02Speaker 1: theme music. It was like it was like a really subtle,
- 14:06Speaker 1: lovely little touch. Also, like you and I talked about
- 14:10Speaker 1: this kind of like I do think that the storyline
- 14:14Speaker 1: with Charlotte, which like is kind of separate from the
- 14:17Speaker 1: main drama about her child coming out as transfer, non
- 14:21Speaker 1: binary or whatever, like changing their name, Like, I think
- 14:25Speaker 1: it's kind of good. Like I think a lot of
- 14:29Speaker 1: this stuff that they're getting wrong with Jay, they're kind
- 14:32Speaker 1: of getting right in a way with Charlotte. Like on
- 14:36Speaker 1: its face, someone would look at that and be like, oh,
- 14:39Speaker 1: they're dead naming their child, blah blah blah. But I
- 14:43Speaker 1: think that's actually a very realistic representation of what it
- 14:46Speaker 1: must be like to be a parent and to have
- 14:48Speaker 1: your child came out as trans. And I say this
- 14:50Speaker 1: as someone who came out as trans to their parents,
- 14:52Speaker 1: you know, with the increased cringe genus of Miranda and Carrie,
- 14:56Speaker 1: Charlotte is currently my favorite of the three and it's
- 15:00Speaker 1: because you're Charlotte. I am not Charlotte. How dare you?
- 15:03Speaker 1: That is slander? I will I will literally sue, call
- 15:06Speaker 1: my attorney, Call my attorney. Random that was so irresponsible,
- 15:13Speaker 1: because you might be a little busy right now. Obviously
- 15:16Speaker 1: we are, I maybe taking out an extremely egregious error
- 15:20Speaker 1: of the episode where in Charlotte was trying to collect
- 15:23Speaker 1: black friends, which I'm really interested in whiteness, investigating whiteness
- 15:29Speaker 1: and white whiteness, critiquing whiteness. And I thought that there
- 15:32Speaker 1: was a lot of good stuff like that in that episode, however,
- 15:35Speaker 1: not to the point of Charlotte needing to diversify her
- 15:39Speaker 1: friend groups so bad that she almost kidnaps her neighbor,
- 15:41Speaker 1: Like it was hard to watch. Yeah, but I think
- 15:45Speaker 1: like that is kind of an honest depiction of people
- 15:49Speaker 1: who are trying to I don't know, like decolonize there.
- 15:55Speaker 1: They're like social lives and like the way they interact
- 15:58Speaker 1: with the world, like making like dumb mistakes like that.
- 16:02Speaker 1: I think that we as a group consueing this show
- 16:07Speaker 1: need to like see these characters as flawed, like it's
- 16:11Speaker 1: it's it's necessary to enjoy them and I think a
- 16:13Speaker 1: lot of people aren't catching onto that there needed to
- 16:16Speaker 1: be a brief moment of contention or explanation as to
- 16:20Speaker 1: why what Charlotte did was wrong, because I at the
- 16:24Speaker 1: end of the episode, you know, lt W was kind
- 16:26Speaker 1: of just like, oh yeah, don't worry about it, and
- 16:28Speaker 1: I was just like, uh, well, I mean that it is.
- 16:32Speaker 1: It's trusting. It's trusting the viewer to be a little
- 16:35Speaker 1: smarter they're not. Also another thing, I saw this thing
- 16:40Speaker 1: on TikTok that was talking about how with Betty White's passing,
- 16:44Speaker 1: someone was talking about how all of the women on
- 16:49Speaker 1: Sex in the City are the same age as all
- 16:52Speaker 1: the women were when Golden Girls started. Oh yes, mid fifties.
- 16:58Speaker 1: Oh my god, and that the only difference, like the
- 17:02Speaker 1: main difference of why they look younger is their hair,
- 17:07Speaker 1: because the gold Golden Girls they all had you know,
- 17:10Speaker 1: like grandma hair. My my brains started to wind together
- 17:14Speaker 1: a joke about Betty White being Carrie Bradshaw's last har crux,
- 17:18Speaker 1: but I didn't quite didn't quite tie it together. So
- 17:22Speaker 1: I'll just say what our Carrie Bradshaws hardcrocks is. Okay.
- 17:25Speaker 1: So the Manola blonics that got stolen yes um, which
- 17:29Speaker 1: she now has back, the Carrey necklace, the Carrie necklace,
- 17:33Speaker 1: her top evidently the heart of the ocean, as the
- 17:38Speaker 1: dol Chay co that she walked down the runway and
- 17:41Speaker 1: then it fell and then used as a blanket when
- 17:43Speaker 1: she had her first night back in her old apartment.
- 17:45Speaker 1: Did you notice that moment? I didn't that it was
- 17:48Speaker 1: such a good fan service moment she wore the dol
- 17:51Speaker 1: chay coat that she fell in as a blanket. I
- 17:54Speaker 1: didn't notice that Stanford is one of her hor crux?
- 17:57Speaker 1: Is that's he's in Japan? Okay, the same way that
- 18:00Speaker 1: Neguini was one of Baltimore's hor CrOx? Is that a note, bitch,
- 18:08Speaker 1: I'm sorry I could have it could have been better written?
- 18:13Speaker 1: And then that posted that post. It is the last
- 18:15Speaker 1: of Carrie's horcros. Is that in case you hadn't picked
- 18:34Speaker 1: it up through context clues. Our guest today is social strategist,
- 18:38Speaker 1: Instagram diva, Twilight historian and all of our story her
- 18:44Speaker 1: historian and all around monster little monster. Okay, well let's
- 18:52Speaker 1: not do that. Peyton Dicks is here in the studio today.
- 18:57Speaker 1: That was the most chaotic intro. I think I've ever
- 18:59Speaker 1: heard my life, but that only makes sense for this
- 19:02Speaker 1: scenario pretty so much for being here. I truly believe
- 19:07Speaker 1: that if we had a podcast, which we do, and
- 19:10Speaker 1: we were doing an episode of Twilight, which we are,
- 19:12Speaker 1: but we had a guest who wasn't you, which we
- 19:14Speaker 1: would never do, I think like within six hours of
- 19:18Speaker 1: being released, a drone would strike me, because I do
- 19:22Speaker 1: think you have access to that kind of power. I do.
- 19:25Speaker 1: There are people I know or you would send the
- 19:28Speaker 1: vaultry after right, where the hell have you been? Oh
- 19:33Speaker 1: my god? The first one of the yeah, yeah, more
- 19:35Speaker 1: to come. Don't think it ends there please. Some important
- 19:39Speaker 1: context I think to all of this is that Rose
- 19:42Speaker 1: and I have attempted to watch the first Twilight movie
- 19:46Speaker 1: several times. Okay, let's not okay, let's let's clear that up.
- 19:50Speaker 1: Because you have attempted to watch it, I have watched it.
- 19:53Speaker 1: What has happened is I have told friend many times
- 19:56Speaker 1: I love Twilight, let's watch it. And specifically, we were
- 20:00Speaker 1: on a vacation in Big Bear last November, and you know,
- 20:04Speaker 1: it was beautiful, it was snowing, and I said, bitch,
- 20:06Speaker 1: we're watching Twilight. It is time. And we put the
- 20:10Speaker 1: first Twilight movie on and in five minutes, this girl
- 20:13Speaker 1: was dead to the world, asleep, stone and asleep. And
- 20:18Speaker 1: you know what I did, watched Twilight and the next
- 20:21Speaker 1: night Frand said, oh, let's watch the next one, so
- 20:25Speaker 1: we put on New Moon and my my favorite as well. Um,
- 20:30Speaker 1: five minutes in she was asleep. I was watching New
- 20:32Speaker 1: Moon asleep. Next night, A clips this actually feels like
- 20:37Speaker 1: like targeted terrorism. Let's watch it. Just kidding. And then
- 20:42Speaker 1: when we left the vacation and went home, I watched
- 20:46Speaker 1: Breaking Dawn parts one and two because I was like,
- 20:48Speaker 1: I already watched the first three movies. I have to
- 20:50Speaker 1: have the whole experience. You gotta finish. Peyton, I want
- 20:56Speaker 1: you to tell us what your experience with Twilight. What
- 21:01Speaker 1: tell me about the like did you read the books first?
- 21:04Speaker 1: Did you watch the movies first? Like tell me how
- 21:06Speaker 1: you fell in love? I read the books, but I
- 21:07Speaker 1: actually only read them after I saw the movie because
- 21:11Speaker 1: I was just like, so that made me horny? What else?
- 21:14Speaker 1: And like waiting between movies for them to come out?
- 21:17Speaker 1: I was like, Okay, I need to get my fix
- 21:20Speaker 1: in between, and like I also the thing about me
- 21:24Speaker 1: is when you're a twyhard. You're naturally a yeah twyard,
- 21:29Speaker 1: let's just sit with that's what our community is called.
- 21:33Speaker 1: You think the barbs are strong though, why hearts are stronger?
- 21:37Speaker 1: The overlap, Remember there's also a lot of overlap. You're
- 21:42Speaker 1: naturally a Crispian, which obviously, as we all know, is
- 21:45Speaker 1: a christ and Suward stand and I think I also
- 21:49Speaker 1: just awakened my at the same time, I think I
- 21:53Speaker 1: knew that I was just really gay. Um, and I
- 21:57Speaker 1: was like, oh my god, I was imagining three songs
- 21:59Speaker 1: with Robert and Chris to and I was like, oh
- 22:00Speaker 1: my god, here it's happening. I'm a bisexual. And then
- 22:03Speaker 1: I was like, it's actually looking like Christian. It's actually
- 22:06Speaker 1: Christian is winning in this in this course, um, like
- 22:09Speaker 1: as she does. Anyway, I think like my love for
- 22:12Speaker 1: Twilight started with them and then moved to the books
- 22:15Speaker 1: and then back into the series in general. But I think, like,
- 22:20Speaker 1: I know, we'll get into this more later, but I'm
- 22:22Speaker 1: so interested in its renaissance now because it was something
- 22:25Speaker 1: that was like, of course, a huge I feel like
- 22:29Speaker 1: could following such the wrong word because it was huge.
- 22:31Speaker 1: It was a blockbuster movement, It was a phenomenon. It
- 22:35Speaker 1: was a saga. It was a saga literally shaped culture.
- 22:39Speaker 1: It like changed the water did. Literally. It was when
- 22:42Speaker 1: we talk about cultural phenomenons and like the like, especially
- 22:46Speaker 1: young adult culture, It's like Twilight. It was Harry Potter
- 22:49Speaker 1: to Twilight to Hunger Games. I don't know what the
- 22:56Speaker 1: Twilight to fifty Shades of grat pipeline. We all fall
- 22:58Speaker 1: the true pipe. Um. But yeah, I think like for me,
- 23:03Speaker 1: I've been asked this question before and I literally don't
- 23:06Speaker 1: know if I have like the thing that sparked it. It
- 23:08Speaker 1: It just was like this makes sense, and I don't
- 23:10Speaker 1: even know if that's like I watched like Vampire Diaries,
- 23:13Speaker 1: but it's not that I'm like deep, okay, hot that's
- 23:17Speaker 1: getting becomes a vampire. It falls off right. It's like
- 23:23Speaker 1: I've actually had enough of this and it's just a
- 23:25Speaker 1: bad joke. I mean, I like shitty things. That's my taste.
- 23:30Speaker 1: Levels that I have terrible types. Absolutely absolutely. We talked
- 23:34Speaker 1: about this a little bit last night and Rose was
- 23:36Speaker 1: very defensive about like me being like, yeah, I feel
- 23:38Speaker 1: like there's this kind of like ironic, like so bad
- 23:41Speaker 1: it's good kind of element to Twilight. Um, but also
- 23:45Speaker 1: you know, I feel like this is like watching it.
- 23:48Speaker 1: There's I think that's part of what that when you
- 23:50Speaker 1: were saying the renaissance that it's in now, like so
- 23:52Speaker 1: much of it is like our love to like watch
- 23:54Speaker 1: things that are like kind of bad, along with like
- 23:56Speaker 1: you know, lesbian subtext and like camp and Okay, but
- 24:00Speaker 1: we were arguing about this, which is that I think
- 24:03Speaker 1: when Twilight came out, it maybe people I think people
- 24:08Speaker 1: were earnestly enjoying it, and I think now I don't
- 24:11Speaker 1: think that people are liking it. Ironically, you know, the
- 24:16Speaker 1: reaction to Twilight when it came out, and I think
- 24:18Speaker 1: the critique of it was very this is something that
- 24:21Speaker 1: teenage girls love, so it's dumb. And also then maybe
- 24:25Speaker 1: there was some discourse about it, like glorifying toxic relationships
- 24:30Speaker 1: because which is, um, yeah, Edward was a monster. But
- 24:37Speaker 1: now that it's come back, I think it's more about
- 24:40Speaker 1: people just kind of earnestly liking it, and the discourse
- 24:45Speaker 1: is more about the things that maybe we actually should
- 24:48Speaker 1: be having discourse about, which is you know, like it's
- 24:52Speaker 1: depiction of like indigenous people and codependent relationships and yeah,
- 24:58Speaker 1: so we are in a twice Dad's a cab, including Charlie,
- 25:03Speaker 1: because I see some people saying a cab except Charlie.
- 25:07Speaker 1: No, no no, no, it still includes him. We're rounding up.
- 25:09Speaker 1: But like he did carry that film on his back
- 25:11Speaker 1: though too. He was the hottest person in the first
- 25:14Speaker 1: I'm a great actor in that movie, but not a
- 25:17Speaker 1: good dad and threatening gun violence on a vampire first
- 25:22Speaker 1: of all, losing battle okay, But like, I don't know,
- 25:26Speaker 1: I think, um, what's funny with this reinvigoration of like
- 25:29Speaker 1: what we see on like TikTok and everything. I do
- 25:31Speaker 1: think it's farnest. I do think people generally are like
- 25:33Speaker 1: this is. And you brought up the example of like
- 25:35Speaker 1: even Fran wanting to watch like the next one. I
- 25:38Speaker 1: recently came home um to l A and I just
- 25:41Speaker 1: watched it for myself to take the edge off. And
- 25:43Speaker 1: my mom was like doing laundry next to me, like
- 25:46Speaker 1: not paying attention, but got tired and was about to
- 25:49Speaker 1: go to bed, and they like kept peeking her head
- 25:51Speaker 1: back in and be like, wait, so is she gonna
- 25:53Speaker 1: she gonna break up with him? Or what can happen?
- 25:55Speaker 1: Like literally the ground one being like, but I do
- 25:58Speaker 1: need to know what happens with this it is enthralling.
- 26:01Speaker 1: So actually, on that note, Fran, what did you think
- 26:04Speaker 1: of it? So last night Frand and I watched Twilight.
- 26:07Speaker 1: I finally forced him. I kept hitting him and pinching
- 26:10Speaker 1: him so he would stay like, what did you think
- 26:13Speaker 1: of Twilight? Well, I have to also say that that
- 26:15Speaker 1: that was now my fourth attempt to watch Twilight. I've
- 26:19Speaker 1: also tried to watch it twice before with an X
- 26:21Speaker 1: and I fell asleep both times. So on fourth watch,
- 26:25Speaker 1: when I finally got all the way through it, I
- 26:27Speaker 1: mean I was definitely um over stimulated something. As someone
- 26:32Speaker 1: who had not a ton of context into the films,
- 26:35Speaker 1: I think what was just immediately shocking is like the
- 26:38Speaker 1: horrid Instagram filter they have over like the entire film.
- 26:42Speaker 1: Don't talk about the blue field? Okay, why does Edward
- 26:45Speaker 1: look blue? I think that's like something that was really
- 26:48Speaker 1: baffling to me on like a cold watch. Was that
- 26:50Speaker 1: like the in you know, my cultural memory. It's like
- 26:54Speaker 1: these two were like the hottest romantic leads in ever
- 26:57Speaker 1: existence of like any romantic movie. And when I watched
- 27:00Speaker 1: this movie last I was like, both of them look
- 27:03Speaker 1: straight up bad like corpses. I need you to ride
- 27:07Speaker 1: for we can't let do this to her. Okay, I'm sorry, Edward,
- 27:17Speaker 1: Edward Cullen looks sick. It was. It was just very disoriented,
- 27:21Speaker 1: like why didn't they color break this film? Well, let's
- 27:24Speaker 1: be let's be clear, in five movies Roberts foundation never
- 27:29Speaker 1: matched his neck, no, not on. It was actually an
- 27:32Speaker 1: act of resistance that they do and exacerbated by his
- 27:35Speaker 1: wig and the breaking. We have to take a moment
- 27:39Speaker 1: to talk about the wigs. Okay, so I just let's
- 27:46Speaker 1: start with the worst one, which is obviously Bella's wig
- 27:49Speaker 1: in a clip, thank thank you, well please speak speak
- 27:53Speaker 1: to it? Well? I like, what was Taylor Lawner's wig?
- 27:57Speaker 1: Like better than Oh? It was so good that last
- 28:01Speaker 1: night Rose googled if his real hair? Are you? I
- 28:06Speaker 1: was like that, I cannot know. It definitely still is
- 28:11Speaker 1: a wig. I we weren't hopefully doubting that. But like
- 28:14Speaker 1: out of all the wigs on the the in the movie,
- 28:17Speaker 1: which there are plenty to pick from, undress like, you're
- 28:21Speaker 1: not going to do this to your lead because you
- 28:22Speaker 1: know you have budget. You have budget to lay that
- 28:24Speaker 1: fucking wig, and you just you left her out there
- 28:28Speaker 1: to dry like she was doing Runaway, So I think
- 28:30Speaker 1: so she had cut her hair and looked great, but
- 28:32Speaker 1: like seeing what the girls on TikTok are doing with
- 28:35Speaker 1: with their hair, like and they did our girl like that.
- 28:40Speaker 1: I mean I was reading that like Kristin Stewart wanted
- 28:43Speaker 1: to like cut her hair throughout the entire franchise because
- 28:45Speaker 1: you know she's lesbian. I've heard that too, right, but like,
- 28:49Speaker 1: but they kept bribing her and offering her financial compensation
- 28:53Speaker 1: to not cut her hair until she finally did for
- 28:54Speaker 1: the Runaways and ethics that obvious. Okay, so you felt
- 29:02Speaker 1: like one blue foot. Okay, they were in they were
- 29:05Speaker 1: in Washington. They're trying to paint a picture. And also
- 29:08Speaker 1: the context is that the first Twilight movie was a
- 29:11Speaker 1: pretty small kind of India. And also, as I told
- 29:18Speaker 1: Fran last night, it's the only Twilight movie directed by
- 29:21Speaker 1: a woman, Catherine Hardwick Hardwick lifting her up in prayer
- 29:25Speaker 1: and that baseball scene gave birth to me. Okay, one
- 29:30Speaker 1: She was apparently the highest grossing female director for like
- 29:33Speaker 1: any release at the time, which is crazy. But also, um,
- 29:36Speaker 1: I the first time we tried watching Twilight, I fell
- 29:40Speaker 1: asleep and then woke up during the baseball scene, and
- 29:43Speaker 1: I was like, what the fuck is going on? Why
- 29:47Speaker 1: is there a plot culminating at the point of a
- 29:49Speaker 1: baseball game? And what does this have to do with
- 29:52Speaker 1: vampires versus werewolf? Well, the thing is that nothing happens
- 29:55Speaker 1: in Twilight. No, nothing, I kept asking. It was like
- 29:58Speaker 1: I think, okay, when they're it's like, we're fifty minutes
- 30:01Speaker 1: into the movie. They're fully in love, like the steaks
- 30:04Speaker 1: are like life and death, but they have barely had
- 30:06Speaker 1: a single conversation, like have not made out or kissed yet,
- 30:10Speaker 1: And I'm like where, Like how did this happen into that? Yeah,
- 30:14Speaker 1: that's right, very like we don't even need to talk.
- 30:18Speaker 1: Do you think it's a horny movie? Despite them being
- 30:22Speaker 1: very chased? Well, yeah, I feel like the whole entire
- 30:28Speaker 1: series is just edging until they finally in that aisle
- 30:32Speaker 1: as May and and you know, their sex scenes like
- 30:38Speaker 1: they're supposed to be, you know, like the hottest thing ever,
- 30:41Speaker 1: the best, Like there's that line, but what Bella doesn't
- 30:44Speaker 1: bring Dawn part two? Like how we ever going to
- 30:47Speaker 1: do anything else? And like their sex looked horrible. They
- 30:50Speaker 1: just don't cut to the bed being broken. They didn't
- 30:52Speaker 1: show the back to it was like one crunch under
- 30:55Speaker 1: Edward's hand. And I will say that unfortunately that was
- 30:57Speaker 1: working for me. It's like I can't even imagine. I
- 31:02Speaker 1: think what they were may be trying to do is
- 31:03Speaker 1: like leaving it up to the imagination. But that's not
- 31:09Speaker 1: It's never been great writing. Don't get it twisted. These
- 31:13Speaker 1: books were not well written. No, that was another thing
- 31:16Speaker 1: I was explaining to France Um that the movies are
- 31:19Speaker 1: significantly cooler than the books. Like I was talking about
- 31:24Speaker 1: the khaki skirt. So, for anyone who's not familiar in
- 31:29Speaker 1: the in Twilight the novel, when Bella goes to meet
- 31:33Speaker 1: Um Edwards family, the infamous is she of an Italian scene.
- 31:37Speaker 1: Um in the books she has described as wearing her
- 31:40Speaker 1: sexiest outfit which makes Edward go crazy, and it is
- 31:43Speaker 1: a floor length khaki skirt. So if you didn't know
- 31:47Speaker 1: this book was written by a Mormon woman, that the
- 31:51Speaker 1: jig is up. Well, I mean, at least you know
- 31:54Speaker 1: the movie stuck to you know the literary principles, and
- 31:57Speaker 1: that Kristin Stewart was dressed terrible. The entire like everything
- 32:01Speaker 1: she wore was like coals? Do you have that? Did
- 32:03Speaker 1: you see the TikTok of like, um, what is this
- 32:06Speaker 1: like Bella Swan sale going on at Arica half but
- 32:12Speaker 1: like my girl loved Headley double like double layer, double layer,
- 32:18Speaker 1: low rise jeans, horrible card against Oh my god, the
- 32:22Speaker 1: card again that she wears to the dress at the end.
- 32:25Speaker 1: This is so humiliating. Why did she do that though?
- 32:30Speaker 1: I mean, well because because Bella is the not like
- 32:35Speaker 1: other girls girl, Yeah she is, that's her. That's her
- 32:40Speaker 1: whole thing. Well, her her only character trait is that
- 32:43Speaker 1: she's awkward, right, and that's it okay, And they're like obsessed.
- 32:47Speaker 1: I love that, love love love it. And I was
- 32:49Speaker 1: just like I think at that time they're like not
- 32:51Speaker 1: to take this somewhere else, but like Christmas, who I
- 32:55Speaker 1: do think is like my wife obviously obviously that's you
- 33:00Speaker 1: know she's listening, hey girl. Um, but I feel like
- 33:04Speaker 1: it was always tough to be like this skinny, tiny,
- 33:09Speaker 1: little ciss white girl is like the epitome of like
- 33:12Speaker 1: everyone wants. So we're talking Jacob, we're talking Edward, like
- 33:15Speaker 1: even that little freaky vampire the want to kill her
- 33:18Speaker 1: like and then I'm sitting here like huh her, well,
- 33:23Speaker 1: like Kristen Stewart. Yes, different Bella huh okay um, she's
- 33:30Speaker 1: nice hair. In the first movie, like there was not
- 33:33Speaker 1: much there to work with and that felt offensive to witnessed.
- 33:37Speaker 1: To be witnessed too. Yeah, the movie, the movies really
- 33:41Speaker 1: and the books kind of tell and don't show why
- 33:45Speaker 1: Bella is interesting, why her and Edward are in love.
- 33:49Speaker 1: It's just that like they are, so that's it. They
- 33:53Speaker 1: are in love. They have the greatest love that has
- 33:56Speaker 1: ever existed, and that's just it. And Liken Hendrick had
- 34:00Speaker 1: points in that movie she she was. Last night, Fran asked,
- 34:05Speaker 1: does Anna Kendrick become a vampire? Can you imagine she
- 34:10Speaker 1: should have happened, because she would like check all of
- 34:12Speaker 1: these period she would have been, she would have been,
- 34:17Speaker 1: she would have killed Victoria, and she would have killed
- 34:21Speaker 1: all the colors. I mean when we were that was
- 34:24Speaker 1: another question that I had when we were watching is
- 34:26Speaker 1: this we were like looking through I was like asking
- 34:29Speaker 1: about like when people were watching this from the start,
- 34:32Speaker 1: did it immediately have like a like a kind of
- 34:34Speaker 1: like lesbian subtext to it, Like was like the awkwardness
- 34:39Speaker 1: of like Kristen Stewart like kind of a part of that,
- 34:42Speaker 1: Like I don't know what a lot of people fell
- 34:43Speaker 1: in love with when they first watched it. I mean
- 34:47Speaker 1: when I first watched it, I don't know if I
- 34:50Speaker 1: I think I was adding in any subtext because I
- 34:52Speaker 1: just was like a baby gay And then like later though,
- 34:55Speaker 1: I remember, like one, I always hated Alice. I never
- 34:58Speaker 1: understood like the Alice Bella shipping like that. I guess,
- 35:05Speaker 1: Dean Rosalie, thank you, That's what I'm like, Um, bully me.
- 35:09Speaker 1: Actually this is what and we can unpack that later.
- 35:11Speaker 1: But like I was just like Alice and her. I
- 35:13Speaker 1: didn't understand Rosalie and her I was shipping that. And
- 35:16Speaker 1: I feel like Edward is also by proxy a lesbian
- 35:21Speaker 1: as well, obviously sure, yeah, yeah, he dresses like he
- 35:26Speaker 1: does he does and just like is a little controlling.
- 35:29Speaker 1: And it's also and he drives like you know, a
- 35:32Speaker 1: Volvo be sponsored by Volvo, like the ugliest cars, the
- 35:38Speaker 1: ugliest cars, Like well, it's like it's like k it
- 35:42Speaker 1: was like that was the one thing. She's like he
- 35:44Speaker 1: has to drive, Okay, listen, he contract die on this hill.
- 35:49Speaker 1: The thing about like the Volvos and the khaki skirts
- 35:51Speaker 1: and like the intensity of like their immediate connection all
- 35:53Speaker 1: that stuff. Like when I was watching again, like with
- 35:56Speaker 1: no context, it's just like immediately vibes like an as
- 36:00Speaker 1: in like an allegory for like the prison of heterosexuality,
- 36:04Speaker 1: you know what I mean. Well, yeah, because eventually they
- 36:09Speaker 1: get married. As soon as she graduates from high school,
- 36:12Speaker 1: she immediately gets pregnant and dies and then and then
- 36:18Speaker 1: they are together forever. Yeah, exactly. And also there's like
- 36:23Speaker 1: I mean there's watching it like retrospectively, we now know
- 36:27Speaker 1: that like both of those actors like kind of hate
- 36:30Speaker 1: the film now, like don't have like a I guess,
- 36:32Speaker 1: I mean, Robert Pattinson says he regrets it, right question marks.
- 36:35Speaker 1: I think he's come around to it more recently. I
- 36:39Speaker 1: think so too, And I think like what's probably tough
- 36:42Speaker 1: about that is not just like the obviously the cringe
- 36:46Speaker 1: e elements of it, of course, but I think it's
- 36:48Speaker 1: also the relationship was so tied to that relation to
- 36:51Speaker 1: that movie, and I feel like what they went through
- 36:55Speaker 1: in there, and I don't know them just for the
- 36:57Speaker 1: record of personally, but I could understand how like being
- 37:01Speaker 1: in such a young intense relationship in a very very
- 37:05Speaker 1: visible movie and like at that time was probably the
- 37:08Speaker 1: most stressful, terrible experience, like you can't do anything at
- 37:14Speaker 1: all together. And then like, I don't know, I think
- 37:16Speaker 1: that when I think about the movies, I always think
- 37:18Speaker 1: about the relationship to like it's almost impossible for me
- 37:21Speaker 1: to not think about like the you know, would never
- 37:24Speaker 1: mention his name here, but like think about who tweeted
- 37:27Speaker 1: about the cheating scandals when for about well, Twilight Mania,
- 37:32Speaker 1: you know, like the the whole celebrity gossip culture of
- 37:37Speaker 1: because you know, this was still the late odds, early
- 37:40Speaker 1: you know, celebrity gossip culture. They were on every magazine
- 37:44Speaker 1: when she cheated on him. That was the biggest story
- 37:47Speaker 1: in the world. Um, so yeah, there must be there
- 37:52Speaker 1: must have been so much pressure on them about those movies,
- 37:55Speaker 1: and especially thinking like an audience of primarily young women, Um,
- 38:02Speaker 1: it just must have been a lot. Yeah. I just
- 38:04Speaker 1: felt like that must that that stress must be tied
- 38:07Speaker 1: both of those things. Of like that movie that doesn't
- 38:10Speaker 1: feel like a full representation because I think people watch
- 38:13Speaker 1: that movie and they're like, oh, christ and Sets a
- 38:15Speaker 1: terrible actress, And I'm like, if you don't fucking go
- 38:18Speaker 1: watch Personal Shopper and shut then up. A personal shopper
- 38:22Speaker 1: Stand podcast. Good to know I'm in good company. Um,
- 38:27Speaker 1: but you know what I mean, like that like summation
- 38:29Speaker 1: of both of them actually, but like brab Pttson was
- 38:32Speaker 1: an amazing actor and so was Kristen, But um, I
- 38:35Speaker 1: feel like they're just like we have to move so
- 38:37Speaker 1: so deeply far away from that so that we can
- 38:39Speaker 1: maybe now like settle in that fact. But also when
- 38:43Speaker 1: you're a celebrity, you're just kind of immediately treated as
- 38:45Speaker 1: an adult. But like Kristen sir was so wasn't she seventeen?
- 38:48Speaker 1: She was cast? Oh my god, that's great. And Robert
- 38:52Speaker 1: Pattinson was like twenty one or something. They were, even
- 38:56Speaker 1: though he the makeup and everything makes him look like
- 38:59Speaker 1: he's like thirty four, I don't think he looks. But yeah,
- 39:05Speaker 1: we need to talk somewhere about some of the other
- 39:07Speaker 1: stylistic choices, because the thing is everyone's hair and looks
- 39:12Speaker 1: changed from movie to movie. There is no consistency whatsoever.
- 39:17Speaker 1: Rosalie is kind of like done the dirtiest um Jasper. Also,
- 39:23Speaker 1: his hair in the in Twilight is rough. Yeah, he
- 39:27Speaker 1: goes through it. He also was a confederate sold to
- 39:29Speaker 1: those um Carlyle is I don't know. There are sometimes
- 39:37Speaker 1: where I think he's kind of hot, there's others. Fran
- 39:40Speaker 1: was commenting that the scene the flashback of Carlyle turning
- 39:44Speaker 1: Edward into a vampire very home that they definitely, you know,
- 39:53Speaker 1: Edward tells Bella that he's a virgin but with girls,
- 39:58Speaker 1: and we talk about like the construct of virginity in
- 40:02Speaker 1: this franchise because they're both virgins, right, there's this kind
- 40:05Speaker 1: of like attention toward like purity culture and like the
- 40:08Speaker 1: perfect like I've never been in love before, I've never
- 40:11Speaker 1: had sex before, but like he was like a hundred
- 40:13Speaker 1: and eight and like you're a virgin, like loser like.
- 40:17Speaker 1: But the thing is, the whole, the whole, main plot
- 40:20Speaker 1: of all of Twilight is Bella trying to get that dick. Yes,
- 40:25Speaker 1: she's just trying to funk and that's what she's going through.
- 40:27Speaker 1: Hell yeah, and eventually it kills her. I get that
- 40:34Speaker 1: among us has not. She is so horny and he's like, nope,
- 40:38Speaker 1: we have to wait until we get married. And then
- 40:40Speaker 1: they get married and have sex and she dies. She's
- 40:44Speaker 1: like worth it. And that is that supposed to be
- 40:46Speaker 1: like an allegory for Mormonism or whatever like that kind
- 40:49Speaker 1: of like part of this Stephanie Stephanie Meyer, who wrote
- 40:53Speaker 1: Twilight is a Mormon, and wait, still a practicing Mormon.
- 40:58Speaker 1: What I thought at least she would have given it
- 41:01Speaker 1: up as she entered society or something. She hasn't entered society.
- 41:06Speaker 1: She doesn't tweet. She stays quiet. YEA, that's actually a
- 41:12Speaker 1: really wise choice so we can still enjoy Twilight because
- 41:17Speaker 1: because I think if she was tweeting, it would be
- 41:19Speaker 1: a different story. Absolutely, Oh my god, there are all
- 41:36Speaker 1: these little things when I think about Twilight at these
- 41:38Speaker 1: moments that like, it's been really reassuring to see on
- 41:44Speaker 1: TikTok or someone noticing because I felt like at the time,
- 41:46Speaker 1: like this is such a small example. But I remember
- 41:48Speaker 1: thinking and like losing my mind over when she was
- 41:53Speaker 1: shaking the catchup in the first movie and nothing comes
- 41:57Speaker 1: out and then she puts it back down, and I
- 41:59Speaker 1: remember were being like, what the fuck? And I think
- 42:02Speaker 1: it was like the most annoying thing. Why does she
- 42:06Speaker 1: hold the catch up like that? Her grip is so loose.
- 42:09Speaker 1: Girl is a microcosm for this film. It is it
- 42:13Speaker 1: is a woman who has truly virtually no free will
- 42:17Speaker 1: and tell like a man tells her what her desires
- 42:19Speaker 1: love so she can barely squeeze a catch up Like
- 42:22Speaker 1: that makes complete sense to me. I think I understood
- 42:25Speaker 1: it immediately. I do want to talk a little about
- 42:30Speaker 1: Twilight and like vampire Cannon, because these vampires are not
- 42:37Speaker 1: vampiric um. You know, I love vampire media. I grew
- 42:42Speaker 1: up on Buffy Um interview with a vampire. And you know,
- 42:47Speaker 1: I think a lot of the things that people a
- 42:49Speaker 1: lot of the criticism about Twilight when it first came
- 42:51Speaker 1: out was like, these vampires are dumb, they sparkle, they
- 42:54Speaker 1: don't have thangs. Um, what are you into? You know,
- 42:58Speaker 1: we touched on the vampire your Diaries, but are you
- 43:01Speaker 1: into other vampires stuff? And how do you think Twilight compares?
- 43:05Speaker 1: What was that HBO show Blood? Yeah? I was knee deeper.
- 43:09Speaker 1: I want to do bad the best opening credits? Yeah
- 43:15Speaker 1: so good. Also like cast um, it's really good. I
- 43:22Speaker 1: thank you. I've been practicing. Um. Yeah, I think like
- 43:24Speaker 1: I've seen an interview with the vampire. I didn't really
- 43:26Speaker 1: like compare them because it doesn't feel it feels like
- 43:30Speaker 1: two different worlds for me. And maybe that answers your question. Well,
- 43:32Speaker 1: that's kind of what's missing from Twilight's Vampires is an
- 43:35Speaker 1: element of camp. And I think maybe that's kind of
- 43:39Speaker 1: what we're exploring through the Twilight extended universe now, Like
- 43:42Speaker 1: on TikTok and meme, culture is making this thing camp
- 43:46Speaker 1: be rather than ironic. Um, you know, like the bella,
- 43:51Speaker 1: where have you been? Loca of it all? Like in
- 43:55Speaker 1: The Ringer, that's low key the sleeper for me. And
- 44:00Speaker 1: I do think I set you a voice aboutn't almost
- 44:04Speaker 1: sending time of voice because just like, uh, you should
- 44:08Speaker 1: have seen me while we're watching the movie last night
- 44:10Speaker 1: when that came out. I was like, brand this is
- 44:12Speaker 1: the best song. This is the banger, And I was
- 44:14Speaker 1: like yeah, and I did say I think. I think
- 44:18Speaker 1: like the soundtrack is like of why I love Twilight such.
- 44:26Speaker 1: I mean, I feel like, do you have a favorite
- 44:27Speaker 1: song out of any movies? I do. I think the
- 44:30Speaker 1: one that starts at all that when a than Bush
- 44:35Speaker 1: that is one of the best. I also really love
- 44:37Speaker 1: Satellite Heart. New Moon was I mean, that was my
- 44:41Speaker 1: favorite movie and my favorite soundtrack. Honestly, Okay, why is
- 44:44Speaker 1: New Moon and your favorite movie? Because it's also mine?
- 44:47Speaker 1: You know what? I actually think about that. I was
- 44:49Speaker 1: thinking about that on the way here, and I was like,
- 44:51Speaker 1: why is it? I think maybe because because I'm not
- 44:54Speaker 1: team Jacob, never happen, never will be UM, and so
- 44:58Speaker 1: I don't know why. And obviously most of the MOVI
- 45:00Speaker 1: we spent with their relationship UM, but I feel like
- 45:04Speaker 1: I understand deeply yearning UM and being sad for so
- 45:10Speaker 1: I think, like for me, Um, it's so bad when
- 45:13Speaker 1: you think about it now. But like even just the
- 45:15Speaker 1: editing of that one shot where just she's sitting in
- 45:17Speaker 1: her tailing out the window looking so dead in the eyes,
- 45:23Speaker 1: which is like I did like a dance to that song,
- 45:26Speaker 1: like a modern dance to you. Yes tell us, Mark
- 45:33Speaker 1: tell us? I mean, well I didn't. I did literally didn't.
- 45:35Speaker 1: Like it wasn't like me in my bedroom like I did.
- 45:38Speaker 1: I had a dance background, so it like kind of
- 45:43Speaker 1: makes sense in context. But like, is there a video?
- 45:48Speaker 1: I hope not, maybe like my mom might have like
- 45:50Speaker 1: a DVD from I'm Gonna, I'm gonna after we record,
- 45:56Speaker 1: like I heard you're also a twyart and you also
- 45:58Speaker 1: have footage, but yeah, we should needs to be a guest. Yeah. Anyway,
- 46:02Speaker 1: so we did a dance to possibility in my like
- 46:05Speaker 1: in front of like an audience, in front of like
- 46:07Speaker 1: living people. Yeah. Wow, and they must have went wild.
- 46:11Speaker 1: Yeah they were. Like was the second movie the one
- 46:14Speaker 1: where Robert Pattinson's abs are spray painted on? Yes? Wow,
- 46:20Speaker 1: that was also jarring. I was apparently he just didn't
- 46:23Speaker 1: like working out or something. He could barely live. Christen Stewart,
- 46:27Speaker 1: whose mind you like ninety pounds just to drop her.
- 46:32Speaker 1: I do think that Twilight is the best movie because
- 46:36Speaker 1: it's like the purest crystallization of what Twilight is. But
- 46:40Speaker 1: New Moon's my favorite because of the yearning, because of
- 46:46Speaker 1: you know, I do love like an angst plot line
- 46:49Speaker 1: where someone gets left and then they get back together
- 46:52Speaker 1: at the end. And but I also think she lets
- 46:55Speaker 1: him off the hook too easily and should make him
- 46:58Speaker 1: work for it a little bit more. Absolutely does he
- 47:00Speaker 1: work for it? Forgives him immediately. Yeah. It also doesn't
- 47:05Speaker 1: make any sense to me, like his logic of oh,
- 47:10Speaker 1: first of all, let's go back to like that he
- 47:12Speaker 1: left her in a forest alone. She could have died.
- 47:14Speaker 1: She could have died, and then God Jacob was there
- 47:18Speaker 1: to pick her up exactly. Sam, I was like one
- 47:20Speaker 1: of the Wolves, like hate for what he did to
- 47:23Speaker 1: Leah Clearwater? Who is he absolutely lesbian icon? Yes? Yes,
- 47:28Speaker 1: where y'all when he first started consuming the franchise, Where
- 47:31Speaker 1: y'all team Edward the whole time? Or did you ever
- 47:33Speaker 1: waiver or like, because I know they were like teams.
- 47:36Speaker 1: That was like a big part of what I don't
- 47:38Speaker 1: think I really cared that much. Who was Yeah, it
- 47:42Speaker 1: was just I was there for the I was there
- 47:44Speaker 1: for the vibe. Yeah, what about you firmly team Team Edward? Wow?
- 47:50Speaker 1: I did not. I was just like this is this
- 47:53Speaker 1: seems like child's play, and like they I can hang
- 47:56Speaker 1: with them, like I can hang with the group. But
- 47:58Speaker 1: like Jacob also was like a small infant baby to me,
- 48:02Speaker 1: even when they were like he's grown up, and I
- 48:04Speaker 1: was like, but he's yeah, but he's like sixteen in
- 48:08Speaker 1: New Moon and you know, you hear about what they
- 48:12Speaker 1: made Taylor lawtn er due to like bulk up for
- 48:15Speaker 1: New Moon and it's actually don't know they do because
- 48:18Speaker 1: he you know he in Twilight, he's very young. Um
- 48:22Speaker 1: and New Moon they told him he had to put
- 48:24Speaker 1: on all this muscle or else they were going to
- 48:26Speaker 1: recast him and he's like he was like sixteen or
- 48:30Speaker 1: seventeen years old. I will say, had I consumed this
- 48:33Speaker 1: like at the time it came out, I'm sure I
- 48:35Speaker 1: would have been Team Jacob because I think a lot
- 48:38Speaker 1: of what Edward was giving is like that kind of
- 48:40Speaker 1: like petulant child energy constantly like having to like take
- 48:43Speaker 1: care of him or whatever, like similar to like that
- 48:46Speaker 1: you know, game, not Game of Thrones, hunger games, um,
- 48:49Speaker 1: and like I probably would have been, you know, team Gail,
- 48:52Speaker 1: not team Peter. You know what your team Peter. All
- 48:57Speaker 1: he can do is throw sacks of flower. What is
- 49:00Speaker 1: that though? And he he loves her so much, Yeah,
- 49:03Speaker 1: but he's like, how is he going to defend her from? Well,
- 49:07Speaker 1: he did it famously. I have to also say while
- 49:16Speaker 1: we were watching this last night, I turned to Rose
- 49:18Speaker 1: and I was like, I was like, you know, complaining
- 49:20Speaker 1: about like the lack of like you know, people of
- 49:22Speaker 1: color in this movie. And I was like, like, I
- 49:24Speaker 1: was like, well, what kind of like you know, Spicy
- 49:26Speaker 1: is like Taylor Lawtner And Rose was like, I think
- 49:29Speaker 1: he's Latin X And I was like, oh maybe, And
- 49:30Speaker 1: I was like, could be Filipino. And we googled he's
- 49:33Speaker 1: fully white, a Wrench German and Dutch like or whatever.
- 49:38Speaker 1: Like it was like I was like, oh, that's it's
- 49:40Speaker 1: and then like there was something that was like some
- 49:43Speaker 1: very like one sixteen like of this Native American or whatever,
- 49:47Speaker 1: like you're applying to college, Like shut up? Um do
- 49:51Speaker 1: you follow? Do you like follow? Or see the videos
- 49:54Speaker 1: of Twilight talks on TikTok. She's the woman who she
- 49:58Speaker 1: has like a Twilight aesthetic background behind her and she
- 50:01Speaker 1: does these like deep dives into Twilight and they're really interesting. Yeah,
- 50:06Speaker 1: she's fascinating. If you are interested in Twilight, go follow
- 50:09Speaker 1: her because her whole thing is like she says she
- 50:12Speaker 1: loves Twilight and she hates it so like she talks
- 50:15Speaker 1: about her obsession for it, but it is also super
- 50:17Speaker 1: critical of it. And one of the things she was
- 50:19Speaker 1: saying is um about how resistant Stephanie Meyer was to
- 50:23Speaker 1: casting people of color and Twilight. That surprised me, and
- 50:28Speaker 1: that she Stephanie Meyer has made it cannon through some
- 50:32Speaker 1: like extended universe book that when people become vampires that
- 50:36Speaker 1: leeches the melanin from their skin, so that no, not
- 50:41Speaker 1: that that is wine one one. Yeah, Well she apparently
- 50:48Speaker 1: didn't want it, like she wouldn't like cast a black
- 50:51Speaker 1: character into the first movie, Like Stephanie Meyer was like
- 50:53Speaker 1: resistant to and then she was like, oh no, we
- 50:55Speaker 1: could do this if it's the bad one, if it's
- 50:57Speaker 1: the villain, and that's how they cast Laurent or whatever.
- 51:00Speaker 1: And I think Katherine Hardwick wanted Alice to be Asian
- 51:03Speaker 1: and Stephanie Meyer was just like, no, this is my vision.
- 51:07Speaker 1: They're like, you'll get that one like woman that works
- 51:09Speaker 1: in the cafe, and she's like, and I've done my
- 51:11Speaker 1: due diligence, like okay, she's a legend. Though she is,
- 51:15Speaker 1: she is okay. Catherine Hardwick reportedly reportedly said that they
- 51:19Speaker 1: could make an argument for casting Laurent because in the
- 51:22Speaker 1: book he was described as having olive skin. What was
- 51:29Speaker 1: in the book? It was like the darkest person described
- 51:33Speaker 1: the book. Oh my god, that's horrible. It's giving very
- 51:36Speaker 1: like her money could have been black. Like, O, friend,
- 51:41Speaker 1: you have you said you seen Breaking Down Part one,
- 51:45Speaker 1: which I do think is amazing. It's kind of like
- 51:47Speaker 1: a horror movie. It was did you wait? This is important?
- 51:50Speaker 1: How did you feel when you saw Breaking Down Part two?
- 51:54Speaker 1: Because I have a visceral memory of Yeah, I remember
- 51:56Speaker 1: watching the fight scene and so for our listeners, if
- 52:02Speaker 1: you don't know, Breaking Dawn part to the movie takes
- 52:04Speaker 1: some artistic liberties. Um, and there is a vision of
- 52:09Speaker 1: the Volturi and the Collins clashing and tons of people
- 52:13Speaker 1: die and then it turns out it's all just a
- 52:15Speaker 1: vision that Alice has I was shook, I was down
- 52:19Speaker 1: bad I but I kind of loved it because I thought, Okay,
- 52:25Speaker 1: maybe they're really going there and we're getting this crazy
- 52:28Speaker 1: like battle of Hogwarts Harry Potter and the definitely hollows
- 52:30Speaker 1: part to like climax and Stephanie Meyers like whatever funk it?
- 52:34Speaker 1: I don't care. YEA, literally that needs to be a
- 52:42Speaker 1: TikTok is. Can you put that out of your TikTok
- 52:45Speaker 1: a state for a breaking down barth day, Wendy Williams. Um.
- 52:49Speaker 1: But I loved it, and I do wish that was
- 52:52Speaker 1: the end of Breaking Dawn Part two too. I wish
- 52:55Speaker 1: it actually happened, because it also just took someone. Do
- 52:57Speaker 1: I remember we being I was in college when I
- 52:59Speaker 1: came out, and I took my friends to go see
- 53:02Speaker 1: it in theaters. Obviously I had to do a lot
- 53:04Speaker 1: of bullying to get that to happen, and I was
- 53:06Speaker 1: just like in shambles, crying, like so confused, but also
- 53:09Speaker 1: like I guess this is happening, and I'm like having
- 53:12Speaker 1: this big emotional outpour and like, you know, for these characters.
- 53:15Speaker 1: And then I was a little pissed when it was
- 53:18Speaker 1: just a vision. It's so annoying. I also do kind
- 53:22Speaker 1: of think that Twilight should have ended with Eclipse, like
- 53:27Speaker 1: a clip should be the last one. Bella should just
- 53:29Speaker 1: become a vampire at the end. Um, have you ever
- 53:33Speaker 1: fucked with Midnight Sun? Absolutely? Which book is? So? Midnight
- 53:37Speaker 1: Sun is a is Twilight from Edward's perspective and released it.
- 53:41Speaker 1: I can't think of anything I would want less. Finally,
- 53:46Speaker 1: time for a man's pod And we hadn't been getting
- 53:49Speaker 1: that the whole book, even though it's told through her,
- 53:52Speaker 1: like it really just feels like he controls everything. I've
- 53:55Speaker 1: never read it, So what did you glean from it? Well?
- 53:57Speaker 1: So I never I didn't read. You know, she just
- 53:59Speaker 1: released it maybe like a year or so ago, but
- 54:01Speaker 1: I didn't read that. What I read was when it
- 54:04Speaker 1: got leaked the PDF, I like downloaded it and read
- 54:07Speaker 1: like the um it was like the first maybe like
- 54:10Speaker 1: few chapters. I think I was just a one too.
- 54:14Speaker 1: She was real pist about that. She wrote this letter
- 54:16Speaker 1: on her website, being like, you've just like fucked with
- 54:19Speaker 1: the integrity of this book, and like you you were
- 54:21Speaker 1: my fans like down now, I'm never going to release
- 54:24Speaker 1: the rest, and everyone's like, shut up, we got what
- 54:26Speaker 1: we needed. But yeah, really, And so I was like
- 54:31Speaker 1: I was only reading it because I just wanted more,
- 54:35Speaker 1: you know what I mean, in the same way like
- 54:36Speaker 1: I had watched movies and was like, Okay, I want more,
- 54:38Speaker 1: So I'll start to read the books. You should fan fiction. Yeah,
- 54:41Speaker 1: that's a good point. Maybe I'll do that now. Have
- 54:43Speaker 1: you read Life and Death? So Life and Death is
- 54:47Speaker 1: because you know, there was so much criticism about the
- 54:50Speaker 1: sort of like gender stereotyping and how like so much
- 54:55Speaker 1: of the criticism about Twilight is how Bella has no
- 54:57Speaker 1: agency and she's just kind of like a damsel in distress.
- 55:01Speaker 1: So Stephanie Meyer was like, well, and she wrote a
- 55:04Speaker 1: version of Twilight where the gender roles are swapped and
- 55:09Speaker 1: it's Edith Cullen and bow no no no. The bar
- 55:16Speaker 1: is in the Earth's crust, And what I believe is
- 55:19Speaker 1: that the book ends with the with the bell the
- 55:23Speaker 1: male Bella character Bow just becoming a vampire, and Stephanie
- 55:26Speaker 1: basically disproves her entire point that the move that the
- 55:29Speaker 1: book would the story would be exactly the same if
- 55:32Speaker 1: the gender was swapped, because it's fully not and you know,
- 55:38Speaker 1: it's just like she is. We can never trust these
- 55:42Speaker 1: women behind me? Do we think that that she who
- 55:48Speaker 1: must not be named and Stephanie Meyer have ever interacted
- 55:51Speaker 1: without a doubt? I mean they text. I mean they
- 55:55Speaker 1: both definitely hate women. I think that is like clear
- 55:59Speaker 1: I feel, but I feel like when I was like like,
- 56:02Speaker 1: I don't know, there's something about I mean, I was
- 56:04Speaker 1: the Diatlentina has this really amazing essay that um has
- 56:07Speaker 1: this like treout of like Bella Catanius and who's in
- 56:11Speaker 1: Fifty Shades of Anastasia Steel. But the thing is Steal
- 56:14Speaker 1: is Bella sUAS. So how can you talk about them
- 56:18Speaker 1: as if they're different people? Because because the Fifty Shades
- 56:21Speaker 1: of Gray is literally a Twilight fan fiction, so Anastasia
- 56:23Speaker 1: is just a Bella. But Anastasia I think that the yeah,
- 56:28Speaker 1: exactly the vivity Shades of I mean we would have
- 56:33Speaker 1: watched it, but like basically that there's this kind of
- 56:36Speaker 1: like men like kind of you know, it's they're reaching
- 56:39Speaker 1: beyond their circumstances. It's so hard to be a man,
- 56:42Speaker 1: and like everything is agony, and like women just have
- 56:44Speaker 1: to kind of like shape their desires and like are
- 56:47Speaker 1: defined by like whatever they want. But I think like
- 56:49Speaker 1: Anastasia was kind of like the adultification of what was
- 56:53Speaker 1: supposed to happen in Twilight. You know, like they actually
- 56:55Speaker 1: have sex, which like doesn't happen for like a lot
- 56:58Speaker 1: of Well that's just that's because it's a in fiction,
- 57:00Speaker 1: and that's what happens in fan fiction is people fuck.
- 57:04Speaker 1: You're like, let's just skip a couple of steps and
- 57:06Speaker 1: get straighty sometimes very um kinkly. They fuck. I forgot
- 57:10Speaker 1: her name was Anastasia Steele. Anastasia Steel, terrible. Do you
- 57:18Speaker 1: funk with fifty Shades of Grey? Um? I saw it,
- 57:22Speaker 1: So that's my answer. I love fifty Shades of Gray.
- 57:28Speaker 1: I love Twilight. We will be having another episode, Yeah,
- 57:31Speaker 1: we will be doing it. I've seen them. I want
- 57:34Speaker 1: there to me. They are Valentine's Day movies and so
- 57:38Speaker 1: I watched them every Valentine also great soundtracks. Oh my god,
- 57:44Speaker 1: Okay Beyonce, Okay, Gaslight, Gate keep girl Boss. Twilight characters,
- 57:54Speaker 1: Um Edward is Gaslight. I just want to I just
- 57:59Speaker 1: want to all the women, And that's what I did.
- 58:04Speaker 1: Maybe I was just thinking immediately between, like girl Boss
- 58:09Speaker 1: to me is actually Rosalie, and that's maybe just because
- 58:14Speaker 1: I love her. Um Gaslight. Alice interesting, who's gay ky,
- 58:24Speaker 1: but that just really makes sense for Jane is there
- 58:27Speaker 1: Like Jane, She's the one I was telling played by
- 58:34Speaker 1: legend Icon star Dakoda Fanning, who can make people be
- 58:39Speaker 1: in pain with her mind. Oh my god, in a
- 58:43Speaker 1: way that's lesbian too. Who are the most felt it?
- 58:48Speaker 1: Who are the most lesbian Twilight characters? Now, let's talk
- 58:51Speaker 1: about it. Bella obviously, I mean, but only because she's
- 58:55Speaker 1: in the gayest relationship I've ever seen in my life.
- 58:58Speaker 1: I feel like, I don't know why, but Alice is
- 59:01Speaker 1: one of those people that's like just because she was
- 59:02Speaker 1: a pixie cud, people think it's like queer, and I'm like, no,
- 59:05Speaker 1: you don't get to be gay here. Maybe like she
- 59:08Speaker 1: can like round up and say queer at some point,
- 59:10Speaker 1: but she's mostly and had her relationships. I see that
- 59:12Speaker 1: for her, and then I think, like for me, and like,
- 59:16Speaker 1: I don't know why I want to die on this hill,
- 59:18Speaker 1: But I really do think that Rosalie has and not
- 59:23Speaker 1: like from any kind of trauma, because I don't think
- 59:25Speaker 1: her and Emmet or fucking I think they're homies. I
- 59:27Speaker 1: think they're really good homies who like to like six together,
- 59:30Speaker 1: you know. But at the end of the day, and
- 59:34Speaker 1: it's the girls. Um, but I feel like at the
- 59:37Speaker 1: end of the day, like maybe all of her like
- 59:40Speaker 1: hating of Bella and jealousy and all that was because
- 59:42Speaker 1: she wanted to fuck her absolutely one hundred percent. Also like,
- 59:48Speaker 1: oh and the one with the glasses, the friend, the
- 59:50Speaker 1: normal friend with the glass oh Angela. Yeah yeah, just
- 59:53Speaker 1: by appearance alone, yeah she Um, Rosalie is like one
- 59:58Speaker 1: of the best Twilight actors. I think you could do
- 1:00:01Speaker 1: a whole Rosalie origin story, because fran you don't know that,
- 1:00:04Speaker 1: so don't. Rosalie's origin is that she was um raped
- 1:00:09Speaker 1: by her fiance and a bunch of his friends. I
- 1:00:11Speaker 1: love to die Carl Royle turned her into a vampire,
- 1:00:13Speaker 1: and then she goes when she's a new vampire and
- 1:00:17Speaker 1: kills them all. But she like haunts them. First she
- 1:00:20Speaker 1: does like she does a whole show. She like wears
- 1:00:24Speaker 1: her wedding dress and like stalks them and then shows
- 1:00:27Speaker 1: up like an avenging ghost like them. Yeah, I need
- 1:00:34Speaker 1: an HBO limited series about Rosalie's life. I would fucking
- 1:00:39Speaker 1: watch the ship out of that absolutely. Okay, but you're saying, Okay,
- 1:00:41Speaker 1: you were saying Rosalie is maybe one of them more lesbionic.
- 1:00:44Speaker 1: Can we talk about more about like what about like
- 1:00:47Speaker 1: the relationship you said it was the gayest relationship I've
- 1:00:50Speaker 1: ever seen? What about it was very gay to well
- 1:00:53Speaker 1: between Just for specifying between Edward and Bella specifically, I
- 1:00:59Speaker 1: think like or the immediacy and I'm like wondering where
- 1:01:04Speaker 1: and I'm packing this now of like my attracted to
- 1:01:08Speaker 1: both of them and then to that relationship specifically culture.
- 1:01:12Speaker 1: It was like I was speaking a lot out in
- 1:01:14Speaker 1: that time. Um, but I feel like with them, it's
- 1:01:17Speaker 1: just like all of it have that like magnetic thing
- 1:01:21Speaker 1: that you can always kind of use as like a
- 1:01:26Speaker 1: I don't know what's the word, Like when you first
- 1:01:28Speaker 1: start like dating or seeing someone, you're like it's just
- 1:01:30Speaker 1: like I can't even explain. It's an allegory of clearing
- 1:01:33Speaker 1: and you don't understand your own desis. It's like the
- 1:01:35Speaker 1: unspoken is already there. It's all in the subjects, even
- 1:01:38Speaker 1: though it absolutely wasn't. I was writing the subject in
- 1:01:41Speaker 1: my head, unclear any motives of any character at any time.
- 1:01:54Speaker 1: God so good and the Bonnie Bear on that track, Okay,
- 1:02:00Speaker 1: you notice that. Um yeah, I just think there was
- 1:02:03Speaker 1: so much like yearning there. There was so much like
- 1:02:06Speaker 1: in Oh God, I was like in the quiet of
- 1:02:09Speaker 1: their relationship, and that was like way too much to
- 1:02:11Speaker 1: give to them. That was generous of me to say
- 1:02:13Speaker 1: to them. But like, and I also think the way
- 1:02:15Speaker 1: they just like the way they move so fast away,
- 1:02:17Speaker 1: the stakes always felt so high even when they weren't. Um,
- 1:02:20Speaker 1: I felt, we're just like inherently queer and like sapphic.
- 1:02:24Speaker 1: So it's just like, I know I need to be
- 1:02:27Speaker 1: a part of that. I need to tap myself into
- 1:02:30Speaker 1: that relationship. Does does Stephanie Meyer, like, does she love
- 1:02:32Speaker 1: her gay fans or whatever? Does she not think? She
- 1:02:34Speaker 1: has comment very specific reason, And I'm just saying, just
- 1:02:42Speaker 1: just enjoy, like you know, count your money. Let me
- 1:02:46Speaker 1: know if a theme park opens one day, but other
- 1:02:48Speaker 1: than that, I don't need to hear from you. What
- 1:02:50Speaker 1: would a Twilight theme park even be. You go to Italy,
- 1:02:59Speaker 1: there would be an Italian restaurant and when it would
- 1:03:01Speaker 1: be called Italian? Wait, this is so random, but do
- 1:03:04Speaker 1: you remember that like one waitress that was trying to
- 1:03:08Speaker 1: it was like her last night with the Bangs, the
- 1:03:11Speaker 1: like rockabilly girl, and she's so rude to Bella and
- 1:03:16Speaker 1: she's like, hey, Edward, I'll go suck your dick in
- 1:03:19Speaker 1: the bathroom even though you're here with this other girl.
- 1:03:22Speaker 1: And she just ordered mushroom ravioli. Right. Oh, this is
- 1:03:26Speaker 1: something stick and twisted, and I've I've gone on record
- 1:03:28Speaker 1: about this before, but Bella like loves mushrooms, and I
- 1:03:32Speaker 1: and christ and Stewart actually was saying randomly, the sore
- 1:03:35Speaker 1: random that she like mushrooms. I hated mushrooms at the time,
- 1:03:37Speaker 1: and I convinced myself to like mushrooms because of Bella. Yes, well,
- 1:03:42Speaker 1: at least she has a third at least she has
- 1:03:44Speaker 1: a third character trait tale and she likes mushrooms. Oh,
- 1:03:48Speaker 1: you also can read, and like she she she likes
- 1:03:52Speaker 1: to read, but in a very unspecific way. She's like,
- 1:03:55Speaker 1: I love books. Don't ever ask me about them, and like,
- 1:04:01Speaker 1: what the what's what are they listening to when she
- 1:04:03Speaker 1: turns on the music, And he was like, Oh, it's
- 1:04:05Speaker 1: just she's like I love Also, I was watching Twilight
- 1:04:13Speaker 1: talks that TikTok this morning and in Midnight sun apparently
- 1:04:18Speaker 1: Edwards like Edward asked, mellow, what's in your CD player
- 1:04:21Speaker 1: right now? And she says lake in Dark? No? No? Shoot. Um,
- 1:04:44Speaker 1: you know what a lot of people talk about with
- 1:04:45Speaker 1: Twilight is that Twilight is the ultimate Mary Sue story.
- 1:04:50Speaker 1: And what is Mary? So? Mary Sue is a trope
- 1:04:53Speaker 1: in fan fiction and literature which is basically a self
- 1:04:57Speaker 1: insertion character of the author who is like perfect and
- 1:05:02Speaker 1: the story centers around and like she never does anything
- 1:05:05Speaker 1: wrong and she's super special for no reason. And Bella
- 1:05:09Speaker 1: is the Mary Sue of Mary sus um quintessential. And
- 1:05:14Speaker 1: I thought it would be fun to today make you
- 1:05:17Speaker 1: the Mary Sue and we're going to build a Twilight
- 1:05:20Speaker 1: fan fiction around you. Um, so you're in a Twilight
- 1:05:25Speaker 1: fan fiction. You're the self insertion character, my own fellow
- 1:05:33Speaker 1: right off the bat, who's your love interest in this
- 1:05:36Speaker 1: fan fiction? Okay? Well I have to ask you a
- 1:05:37Speaker 1: question that this is like people, this is we're still
- 1:05:39Speaker 1: in the Twilight We're in the Twilight world. Okay, Rosalie
- 1:05:43Speaker 1: obviously obviously, how do you mean? Um? Why am I
- 1:05:48Speaker 1: going with the small Well? That kind of goes with
- 1:05:53Speaker 1: my next question is what kind of universe is it?
- 1:05:55Speaker 1: Because you know in fan fiction they like to take
- 1:05:58Speaker 1: the story and set it in different universes. Is this like,
- 1:06:01Speaker 1: are we in a Hunger game this version of Twilight?
- 1:06:03Speaker 1: Are we in a Harry Potter version of Twilight? Are
- 1:06:05Speaker 1: we in a nice little coffee shop at or you
- 1:06:07Speaker 1: go to the coffee shop and resilies the barista and
- 1:06:10Speaker 1: fall in. Yeah, okay, wait you're speaking to me there.
- 1:06:12Speaker 1: We're in like a lesbian only in we're in bed stye.
- 1:06:16Speaker 1: I'm just like making it like Laurel's gonna listen to this,
- 1:06:18Speaker 1: to be like god fucking damn it. Let it rest. Um, Okay, No,
- 1:06:23Speaker 1: I think we are. I kind of don't to just
- 1:06:25Speaker 1: make it like present day almost like like right now,
- 1:06:29Speaker 1: like I'm working on my laptop to you hear that? Yeah? Yeah, um,
- 1:06:38Speaker 1: she's not the barista though she comes in. She asked
- 1:06:41Speaker 1: to borrow the chair next to me. This could go
- 1:06:43Speaker 1: on for too long A pause me when you need
- 1:06:45Speaker 1: and then I look up and then there's like this
- 1:06:47Speaker 1: is the gay moment, right, It's just like you just
- 1:06:49Speaker 1: look lock eyes and then I'm like, yeah, you can
- 1:06:53Speaker 1: take it, go for it. Um. And so she was like, actually, instead,
- 1:06:58Speaker 1: do you mind if I sit? And I'm like, yeah, sure, Okay,
- 1:07:02Speaker 1: I don't know what's happening. Ironic moment. She's still a
- 1:07:08Speaker 1: vampire in this universe. Yeah, but I don't know. Okay,
- 1:07:10Speaker 1: I don't know. Yeah, we're still we're still doing vampires.
- 1:07:12Speaker 1: I want that. I want to have to be able
- 1:07:14Speaker 1: to funk forever. Okay. So I love this. So you
- 1:07:17Speaker 1: meet in a coffee shop, like you maybe start dating
- 1:07:19Speaker 1: and maybe maybe follow us. Like some of the structure
- 1:07:21Speaker 1: of Twilight, what's the what's the conflict, who's the villain,
- 1:07:25Speaker 1: who's the enemy? Like what it what happens? You know,
- 1:07:27Speaker 1: like almost at the end of the movie, when Stephanie
- 1:07:29Speaker 1: Meyer remembers like, oh, there should probably be a context. Um,
- 1:07:34Speaker 1: it's her ex who's was like one, let's say okay
- 1:07:38Speaker 1: all skin, let's give her all skin and someone has
- 1:07:42Speaker 1: she has the type. Yeah, she broke her heart to
- 1:07:46Speaker 1: pieces shambles comes comes back and it's like, I'm so sorry,
- 1:07:52Speaker 1: I love you deeply. It's you. It's never been anyone else.
- 1:07:55Speaker 1: And then it's the X also a vampire, yes, and
- 1:07:58Speaker 1: the vampire that she this is before she meets me,
- 1:08:00Speaker 1: and then she meets me, and then she also maybe
- 1:08:02Speaker 1: falls in love with me, and then all three of
- 1:08:03Speaker 1: us are like in a conflict of like, well who
- 1:08:07Speaker 1: do I pick? It's a love triangles the Teamward team
- 1:08:10Speaker 1: Jacob situation, except its seam Rosalie team. Who's this other girl?
- 1:08:15Speaker 1: Her name? Could? What could her name be? What? All
- 1:08:18Speaker 1: of their names are? So absorry? I know I was
- 1:08:20Speaker 1: trying to think of something terrible? Christ Christian? Um? What
- 1:08:25Speaker 1: is maybe? Can we throw in like another romantic trope?
- 1:08:29Speaker 1: Like is there like an enemy's to love her situation?
- 1:08:31Speaker 1: Is there a there was only one bed? Like you
- 1:08:34Speaker 1: both you're on a trap hotel and there's only one bed?
- 1:08:38Speaker 1: You practice this? Um um? Okay, yeah, we're on a
- 1:08:46Speaker 1: group girls trip. Okay, we're why is we're rich? We're rich.
- 1:08:52Speaker 1: We're rich. So there's things and there's money. Is a
- 1:08:54Speaker 1: dynamic out of the sun. Vampires they can't sparkle um
- 1:09:00Speaker 1: so we're in Aspen with our girl gang kidding that
- 1:09:04Speaker 1: was tough. Don't use that um. And then yeah, she's like, um, okay,
- 1:09:12Speaker 1: so we have we have one room left and the
- 1:09:16Speaker 1: three of us are there, and so do we just
- 1:09:18Speaker 1: sucking it? I don't know, you all just there's only
- 1:09:20Speaker 1: one bed in this room. It was a total mix
- 1:09:23Speaker 1: up with the book. And she offers to be the Aspen.
- 1:09:27Speaker 1: She offers to like call caught in And then we're
- 1:09:30Speaker 1: sitting there and I guess we're like, it's I think
- 1:09:33Speaker 1: it's okay, Um, this is not conflict. This is just
- 1:09:36Speaker 1: me being horny. Yes, that's fine. Do you have a
- 1:09:41Speaker 1: special power? Okay. I don't like him as a character,
- 1:09:44Speaker 1: but I do like that Jasper can control people's feelings
- 1:09:47Speaker 1: and that's on manipulation. Jasper superpowers that he gaslights people
- 1:09:55Speaker 1: and was a Confederate soldiery to listen Apple Oranges. Think
- 1:10:00Speaker 1: I want to bring up is we laughed so hard
- 1:10:02Speaker 1: last night at the part where the apple falls and
- 1:10:09Speaker 1: thinking of the c g I that had to exist
- 1:10:12Speaker 1: to make that happen, and like the hundreds of thousands,
- 1:10:15Speaker 1: if not millions of dollars that were spent to make
- 1:10:19Speaker 1: that dumb like three seconds scene, why it bounces off
- 1:10:24Speaker 1: of his foot. Yeah, it's just it doesn't They're like
- 1:10:29Speaker 1: classic vampire things. They'll love it. But yeah, there's a
- 1:10:33Speaker 1: lot of choices that are made, but I stand by
- 1:10:35Speaker 1: all of them as the creator of the listeners. You
- 1:10:40Speaker 1: can't see it right now, I'm holding an apple to
- 1:10:43Speaker 1: paint in between my hands. That image also feels very
- 1:10:46Speaker 1: saffiic to me. Of the apple. Well, I mean it's
- 1:10:49Speaker 1: obviously you know, reference to Christian allegories Adam and Eve,
- 1:10:53Speaker 1: forbidden fruit. I've heard of them. I've heard of them.
- 1:10:55Speaker 1: People talk forbidden fruit. Um, Hayton, thank you so much
- 1:11:01Speaker 1: for being here with us today and talking about Twilight
- 1:11:03Speaker 1: with us. Um, what is your before you go like
- 1:11:07Speaker 1: just what's your favorite thing about Twilight? But like you're
- 1:11:11Speaker 1: like favorite weird thing about Twilight that you want to
- 1:11:14Speaker 1: leave people with. I think, like, if you haven't watched it,
- 1:11:20Speaker 1: just think about the choices of who is cast in
- 1:11:23Speaker 1: this movie. Just think about it. Just like, let Rommy
- 1:11:29Speaker 1: just seep into your soul. Let Dakota like make your
- 1:11:31Speaker 1: way in. Let Anna Kendrick, you know, do what she
- 1:11:35Speaker 1: needs to do. Yeah. God, and I'm still waiting for
- 1:11:38Speaker 1: the sixth movie where Anna Kendrick becomes a vampire. You
- 1:11:43Speaker 1: are also on the receiving end of a lot of
- 1:11:46Speaker 1: Twilight content from strangers, And do you have a message
- 1:11:51Speaker 1: for people in your d ms, you know, talking to
- 1:11:53Speaker 1: you about Twilight, anything you you want to get off
- 1:11:55Speaker 1: your chest. I will say I do get multiple d
- 1:11:59Speaker 1: ms every day. I'm not kidding everything every single day,
- 1:12:01Speaker 1: and like of some kind of Twilight meme or TikTok
- 1:12:05Speaker 1: or where Kristen stewarts geolocation is exact, and I'm like,
- 1:12:09Speaker 1: that's okay, I'm not that scary. You can keep that information. Well, okay,
- 1:12:15Speaker 1: sure that's not We don't want to know, but I
- 1:12:19Speaker 1: will say I do appreciate it. It's nice to feel seeing.
- 1:12:21Speaker 1: It's nice to have community and know that we are
- 1:12:23Speaker 1: all on this chaotic evil ride of standing Twilight for
- 1:12:27Speaker 1: the rest of your life. U. And with that, um,
- 1:12:33Speaker 1: let's We'll leave you with a song. I think you
- 1:12:36Speaker 1: know the one that will you do with me? Harmony?
- 1:12:46Speaker 1: That was okay, goodbye Vampires, Team Edward. Well, I hope
