- 0:52Speaker 1: He's Jeff Lagwald and he is brought to you by
- 0:54Speaker 1: the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers ibe W Local sixty eight.
- 0:59Speaker 1: Start with a job, with a career and you folks
- 1:02Speaker 1: the trades. Not a bad way to go. Jeff, my man,
- 1:05Speaker 1: how are you Gosh, Jeff, There's so much we could
- 1:09Speaker 1: start with, but I feel like I've got to start
- 1:10Speaker 1: with the story of the day that doesn't really evolve
- 1:12Speaker 1: the Broncos. Even though Singleton, I know, talked about it.
- 1:16Speaker 1: The players want us the media outside of the locker room.
- 1:21Speaker 1: They don't want us having the open locker room periods.
- 1:24Speaker 1: We have throughout the week they wanted to go back,
- 1:26Speaker 1: as they referenced to COVID times and I know you
- 1:29Speaker 1: felt like some guys didn't get their voices heard. Then
- 1:32Speaker 1: where do you think we're gonna go with this story
- 1:34Speaker 1: in the coming weeks and days?
- 1:37Speaker 3: Well, I think the players h you know, I had
- 1:42Speaker 3: spoken to Alex about this earlier in the week, and
- 1:46Speaker 3: I think the most players I've spoken through it just prefer,
- 1:51Speaker 3: you know, to remain how it is. I mean, the policy,
- 1:58Speaker 3: the media policy, not that hands would care, but the
- 2:01Speaker 3: media policy has always had a section in there where
- 2:06Speaker 3: the player didn't want to, you know, conduct an interview
- 2:11Speaker 3: in the locker room because you know, he didn't want
- 2:14Speaker 3: other people to hear him, or he didn't want to
- 2:17Speaker 3: stand by his teammates, whatever, that they could do that
- 2:22Speaker 3: outside of the locker room. And that's that the players
- 2:25Speaker 3: Union is telling the players to do that more often. Ultimately,
- 2:30Speaker 3: the players Union guests they do want all of the
- 2:34Speaker 3: media out of the locker room, but they they admit
- 2:39Speaker 3: they're not sure how it would look. You know, that
- 2:43Speaker 3: the whole process would look if that happens, because you know,
- 2:47Speaker 3: fifty three players are available to the media at a
- 2:52Speaker 3: at a given time during the day, and you know,
- 2:55Speaker 3: there are only so many rooms you can do that
- 2:58Speaker 3: in at an NFL complex. The locker room is one,
- 3:01Speaker 3: the cafeteria maybe is one, or the team meeting room.
- 3:06Speaker 3: But for the most part, that's why it's in the
- 3:09Speaker 3: locker room right now, and that's the way it's spent
- 3:12Speaker 3: for decades. But I don't think in the near future
- 3:15Speaker 3: for fans much changes about how we get information and
- 3:20Speaker 3: how we try to get it to them.
- 3:21Speaker 4: How how has it changed over your years of being
- 3:24Speaker 4: in the NFL, Like did you have more access earlier
- 3:27Speaker 4: in your career or has the NFL just been, you know,
- 3:31Speaker 4: slowly limiting the access to players more and more or
- 3:34Speaker 4: is there a happy ground somewhere that you've seen in
- 3:36Speaker 4: the past, you know, fifty years you've been doing this.
- 3:39Speaker 3: Yeah, I don't think much is I don't think much
- 3:42Speaker 3: has changed overall. I mean, I think players, you know
- 3:47Speaker 3: players now. It's more formal now than it used to
- 3:51Speaker 3: be because there's more media now than there used to be,
- 3:54Speaker 3: so you know, you may have you know, if a
- 3:57Speaker 3: player played for a team you come for five years
- 4:01Speaker 3: before you know, you may have gotten closer to that
- 4:04Speaker 3: player personally than you do now. But just the whole
- 4:08Speaker 3: process hasn't changed much. You know, just the fact that
- 4:13Speaker 3: there are more media now and social media has kind
- 4:17Speaker 3: of changed, you know, the amount of video you know,
- 4:22Speaker 3: being shot during interviews has probably increased, you know, ten times,
- 4:27Speaker 3: so that's different as well. But you know, the base
- 4:32Speaker 3: root of it, people in the media interviewing players. You
- 4:37Speaker 3: know that that hasn't changed a whole lot of the years.
- 4:40Speaker 1: All Right, the business is hand, which is the Raiders
- 4:43Speaker 1: coming up this week. I feel like, and this is
- 4:47Speaker 1: even a broader question, but I feel like, after what
- 4:50Speaker 1: we witnessed with the first four games, as you laid
- 4:53Speaker 1: out on this show and talked about in the offseason,
- 4:56Speaker 1: tough first four defenses to start with and coaches to
- 4:58Speaker 1: go against. Now these next four, at least, it appears
- 5:02Speaker 1: at the moment a little bit easier, a little bit
- 5:06Speaker 1: you know, a little bit easier task, I guess, I'll say,
- 5:09Speaker 1: compared to the first four. Is that a fair read
- 5:11Speaker 1: on it? Though, Leggy, with how folks are playing, like
- 5:14Speaker 1: I guess I do you even put a finer point
- 5:16Speaker 1: on it? Should the offense have a chance to show
- 5:18Speaker 1: a little bit more these next four weeks than what
- 5:20Speaker 1: we saw the first four weeks.
- 5:23Speaker 3: And you know, I would think so andy, And I
- 5:25Speaker 3: think they've they've shown if they get anything from the offense,
- 5:31Speaker 3: you know, they can hang in and slug it out
- 5:33Speaker 3: with almost anybody. So I think that's really the the benchmark.
- 5:38Speaker 3: Can they get something from the offense enough that the
- 5:43Speaker 3: defense isn't constantly defending short fields and you know, having
- 5:48Speaker 3: to be out there forever type of thing. I think
- 5:51Speaker 3: that's you know, I think that's what's to watch here.
- 5:54Speaker 3: You know, they if they if the offense doesn't go
- 5:59Speaker 3: even a little more, are in these next few days
- 6:01Speaker 3: and you know, we're we're looking at more than a
- 6:06Speaker 3: but an outlier game or two. We're looking at a full,
- 6:10Speaker 3: full blown trend. And you know, four games is a
- 6:12Speaker 3: lot in that regard in terms of you know that
- 6:16Speaker 3: they you know, they sit right now, they're near the
- 6:20Speaker 3: bottom of every offensive category and they're near the top
- 6:24Speaker 3: of every defensive category. And I guess what we don't
- 6:28Speaker 3: know is is that's gonna be the way it is
- 6:30Speaker 3: all season and they just have to deliver it, or
- 6:33Speaker 3: is the offense gonna gonna at least get to the
- 6:37Speaker 3: middle of the pack. Status.
- 6:40Speaker 4: Do you have an answer? Why the because what what's
- 6:44Speaker 4: happening to my NFL offenses that I love so much?
- 6:47Speaker 4: Obviously with the Raiders and Broncos, everybody expects us to
- 6:49Speaker 4: be a low scoring game. But it according to the stats,
- 6:53Speaker 4: this is gonna be one of This is gonna be
- 6:56Speaker 4: the fewest passing yards and the fewest passing touchdowns we've
- 6:59Speaker 4: seen in the NFL's is the early two thousands. Why
- 7:02Speaker 4: is that happening right now?
- 7:05Speaker 3: But I think that's a tough conversation to have after
- 7:09Speaker 3: a guy for this for five hundred.
- 7:13Speaker 2: Town.
- 7:14Speaker 3: But you know, some of it is, you know that
- 7:18Speaker 3: the defense eventually gets the pendulum swing back and they
- 7:23Speaker 3: figure it out, and people cry and yell about offense
- 7:28Speaker 3: and they change a ruler two to open things back
- 7:31Speaker 3: up against So I think this is a case of
- 7:36Speaker 3: defenses figuring out, you know, in terms of nickel defense
- 7:41Speaker 3: and zone defense and combinations and and this is the case.
- 7:47Speaker 3: The defensive coordinators are understanding the geography of the field
- 7:52Speaker 3: and that yards, you know, don't mean as much as points,
- 7:57Speaker 3: so they're you know, they're defending certain the field better
- 8:01Speaker 3: than they used to. And then inclose the red.
- 8:03Speaker 1: Zone right now, All right, what are we making of
- 8:07Speaker 1: Alex Poulcewsky Again? I bring him up because you're a
- 8:10Speaker 1: guy that really kind of talked about how good he
- 8:12Speaker 1: was looking last year. Then he suffered a camp injury,
- 8:14Speaker 1: so we'll never know what could have been. Right, but
- 8:17Speaker 1: he's come out there and you know, aside from that penalty, Jeff,
- 8:20Speaker 1: he's looked pretty good. Is there any chance that there's
- 8:24Speaker 1: a conversation to be had about not keeping him off
- 8:28Speaker 1: the field once mcglinchy's healthy. I know that maybe it
- 8:31Speaker 1: gets you a little more time to even let you know,
- 8:35Speaker 1: mcglinchy rest. But I mean, Jeff, they liked him last year, right,
- 8:39Speaker 1: Is there any chance he could start challenging? Could could
- 8:41Speaker 1: he go back to left and challenge Bulls if he
- 8:44Speaker 1: needed to to maybe let or even just let Bulls
- 8:47Speaker 1: heal left that ankle if he needs it. Do they
- 8:48Speaker 1: need to get this guy or keep this guy on
- 8:50Speaker 1: the field.
- 8:52Speaker 3: Well, I you know they mcglinchy and Bowls are two
- 8:56Speaker 3: of the highest stay tackles in the league. So I
- 8:58Speaker 3: make some of that is is you know, conversation for later,
- 9:04Speaker 3: you know, maybe, But because I think you know their
- 9:07Speaker 3: intention is that mcglinchy plays when he comes back and
- 9:11Speaker 3: all of those things. But I don't think that's you know,
- 9:16Speaker 3: going to be real soon or you know, maybe maybe
- 9:19Speaker 3: a few more games yet. I saw Mike the other
- 9:24Speaker 3: day at the facility. You know, he's he's still doing
- 9:28Speaker 3: his rehab and all of those things, but that, you know,
- 9:31Speaker 3: what they need from Paul saying, this is exactly what
- 9:34Speaker 3: you hope for if you have good depth on your team.
- 9:37Speaker 3: And we wondered, I wondered especially that, you know, did
- 9:42Speaker 3: they have enough depth to tackle? And he has alleviated
- 9:47Speaker 3: that at least some And you know, he's just that
- 9:50Speaker 3: from a scouting perspective, he's just a different kind of
- 9:53Speaker 3: player because he doesn't always do every technique and every
- 9:59Speaker 3: you know, movement perfect or how you should or how
- 10:03Speaker 3: you would draw it up. But he isn't just the
- 10:06Speaker 3: results driven player. He gets it done by the time
- 10:09Speaker 3: the play is over. So they needed him, and I think,
- 10:13Speaker 3: you know, they fully intent for him to be around.
- 10:15Speaker 3: And you know, you know, Bowles's contract is up at
- 10:19Speaker 3: the end of the year and I don't know if
- 10:21Speaker 3: they think Paul Chester could play that the left tackle
- 10:25Speaker 3: spot or any of that, but you know, I think
- 10:28Speaker 3: they see him as a right tackle, but I think
- 10:30Speaker 3: those are conversations for later. Back to your question, I
- 10:33Speaker 3: just think they are very very happy with the way
- 10:37Speaker 3: he's playing right now and and hope he can keep
- 10:40Speaker 3: it up. If you know, it looks like Max Crosby's
- 10:44Speaker 3: gonna play this weekend. He practiced today, so that that
- 10:47Speaker 3: would certainly be a good test for him to see
- 10:51Speaker 3: where he is really at right now.
- 10:54Speaker 4: Well, we got we gotta have a bow Nicks question,
- 10:56Speaker 4: So I guess what what do you think about the
- 10:59Speaker 4: progress of the youngster through four games in the Bronx?
- 11:03Speaker 3: That's about you know what you expect and you know,
- 11:08Speaker 3: for a rookie cornerback, it's it's not an easy position
- 11:12Speaker 3: to get thrown in, you know immediately. I just I
- 11:17Speaker 3: think they're real struggle for the offense, and bone Nicks
- 11:20Speaker 3: in particular, is they're they're running most of their offense
- 11:23Speaker 3: at a pretty small rectangle on the field, and defenses
- 11:28Speaker 3: knowing right now, I mean they have two completions this
- 11:31Speaker 3: year over thirty yard and that's that's you know, that's predictability.
- 11:36Speaker 3: If you're a defensive coordinator, you're you're saying chances are
- 11:40Speaker 3: if I defend you know, this twenty yard window by
- 11:44Speaker 3: the line of scrimmage, I'm going to do pretty well
- 11:46Speaker 3: against the Broncos. And I think that's what's hurt in
- 11:50Speaker 3: the most is that they have not found a way
- 11:54Speaker 3: to boosten things up. Defenses are crowding the short and
- 11:58Speaker 3: intermediate stuff, and he has not been accurate in trying
- 12:03Speaker 3: to solve that.
- 12:04Speaker 1: Uh, Lakey, I'm curious. You know you you you and
- 12:07Speaker 1: Adam Schefter obviously, uh collaborate on a lot of things.
- 12:13Speaker 1: What do you think happens with DeVante Adams? What have
- 12:15Speaker 1: you heard around the league? How quickly you think this
- 12:17Speaker 1: move gets made? The Are you surprised we're here already?
- 12:22Speaker 3: You know? And it's this is more and more prevalent.
- 12:25Speaker 3: I guess you wouldn't think a guy like that would
- 12:28Speaker 3: be traded, you know, fifteen years ago, but now it's
- 12:33Speaker 3: it's a conversation. I think most people I talk to
- 12:36Speaker 3: the league believe he will almost certainly be traded. It's
- 12:40Speaker 3: just a matter of, you know, who's got the cap space.
- 12:42Speaker 3: And he's been very sort of particular about where he
- 12:46Speaker 3: wants to go. I mean, everybody now says the Saints
- 12:49Speaker 3: or the or the Jets, you know, and it's just
- 12:53Speaker 3: it could those teams even handle that? I mean, you're
- 12:56Speaker 3: you know, Garren Wilson, the Jets receiver, who's there sort
- 13:00Speaker 3: of their number one, was asked today, Hey, how would
- 13:04Speaker 3: you you know if Devanta Adams was here? So, I mean,
- 13:07Speaker 3: I think it's the feeling in the league is, uh,
- 13:12Speaker 3: he's gonna get dealt and that the Raiders almost feel
- 13:15Speaker 3: like they have to move him or he won't. You know,
- 13:20Speaker 3: they won't get much productivity out of them as they don't.
- 13:24Speaker 4: I find it fascinating how these NFL teams picked their
- 13:27Speaker 4: head coach with Antonio Pierce, with with with Vegas and
- 13:30Speaker 4: Champagne with the Broncos. If I gave you eighty billion
- 13:33Speaker 4: dollars in an NFL franchise, how would you go about
- 13:37Speaker 4: naming a head coach.
- 13:40Speaker 3: Well, that's the great riddle for them all, you know.
- 13:42Speaker 3: They some of the owners try to use, you know,
- 13:46Speaker 3: the same hiring practices they use in their in their
- 13:50Speaker 3: regular businesses, you know, in the non football businesses. And uh,
- 13:56Speaker 3: some will you know, go for the biggest name, Some
- 13:59Speaker 3: go for or I only care about offense and excitement
- 14:03Speaker 3: and all of that. I you know, I think it's
- 14:07Speaker 3: like anything, you definitely want to try to get the
- 14:12Speaker 3: best person you can for that job, and and however
- 14:16Speaker 3: you got to do it. You know, use a search firm,
- 14:19Speaker 3: talk to as many people as you know in the business,
- 14:23Speaker 3: and and all of those things. But it isn't It
- 14:26Speaker 3: is a tough thing, and uh, you know, it's hard
- 14:31Speaker 3: to it's hard to get right for a long term solution.
- 14:35Speaker 3: I mean, the Steelers are the ultimate, uh, the ultimate
- 14:40Speaker 3: example of what it looks like if you get it right.
- 14:43Speaker 3: They've they've only had three head coaches since the sixties,
- 14:47Speaker 3: so you know, everybody else is is nowhere near that
- 14:52Speaker 3: success rate. But it's a tough thing and uh, and
- 14:58Speaker 3: owners are so quirky of about how they do it.
- 15:00Speaker 3: There there really are some owners who only want the
- 15:03Speaker 3: splash and the and you know, I mean the biggest
- 15:07Speaker 3: name possible when that might not be the best fit.
- 15:10Speaker 3: But I think too many of them don't attack it
- 15:15Speaker 3: the way they would in their other businesses, which is
- 15:19Speaker 3: search for the absolute best person for that for that
- 15:22Speaker 3: job and do whatever you have to do to get them.
- 15:25Speaker 3: And then I don't think enough owners have a list
- 15:28Speaker 3: ready of what would I do if my coach leaves
- 15:33Speaker 3: or I has to fire them. And too many times
- 15:36Speaker 3: they're less scrambling, you know, they don't have enough candidates,
- 15:39Speaker 3: so they they feel pressure and hire somebody, you know,
- 15:43Speaker 3: just to finish finish out the process. But you know you,
- 15:48Speaker 3: I've seen it done every single way, and there are
- 15:52Speaker 3: always examples of it working, and there's always tons of
- 15:55Speaker 3: examples of when it doesn't.
- 15:57Speaker 1: Jeff appreciate you is always my friend. Look for to
- 16:00Speaker 1: talk to you on Monday, did Jeff all? That is
- 16:03Speaker 1: Jeff Lake will It always brought to you by the
- 16:04Speaker 1: International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers IBEW Local sixty eight. Start
- 16:09Speaker 1: with a job and with a career.
