- 1:44Speaker 1: break down this 3-1 defeat at the hands of the
- 1:48Speaker 1: Philadelphia Flyers on a late start here on a Wednesday night.
- 1:52Speaker 1: Always got to love that, especially against a team like
- 1:54Speaker 1: the Flyers that has not been playing well going into
- 1:57Speaker 1: the season. We're going to get the game stats, scoring summary.
- 1:59Speaker 1: We're going to hear from Sabres head coach Lindy Ruff
- 2:02Speaker 1: as well in the postgame, and we'll give our stick
- 2:04Speaker 1: taps as well. We had some returns tonight for the
- 2:07Speaker 1: Sabres on the lineup, and we'll get into all that
- 2:09Speaker 1: as well. Make sure to give us a follow on

- 2:26Speaker 1: GM Sports Network merch store. Jonathan, before we get to
- 2:29Speaker 1: Sabres head coach Lindy Ruff, who's at the podium now,
- 2:32Speaker 1: so we're going to start with I guess that after
- 2:34Speaker 1: our opening remarks here, you know, this looked like a
- 2:38Speaker 1: game with the Sabres. It's their only home game here
- 2:40Speaker 1: in about 22 days. And you expected with how bad
- 2:42Speaker 1: the Flyers are playing. I know that they had picked
- 2:44Speaker 1: up a win against Colorado the other night. So good
- 2:47Speaker 1: on them for that. But you expected the Sabres to
- 2:49Speaker 1: come up with a winning winning performance tonight. And, you know,
- 2:52Speaker 1: there were times where they probably should have come away
- 2:54Speaker 1: with the two points in this game. And we even
- 2:56Speaker 1: talked about when we started. I don't know how they
- 2:58Speaker 1: lost this game. I mean, there were reasons for it,
- 3:00Speaker 1: but when you look back at all the statistics and
- 3:03Speaker 1: how Buffalo controlled the play for most of it, it
- 3:06Speaker 1: was disappointing they didn't even get a point here.
- 3:08Speaker 3: Yeah, this really felt like one of those games that
- 3:10Speaker 3: they were due to absolutely at least force overtime. I
- 3:14Speaker 3: thought they were going to win it outright. I thought
- 3:16Speaker 3: it probably could have been like two or three or
- 3:18Speaker 3: even four nothing Sabres in that first period. And if
- 3:21Speaker 3: Dan Ladar had played like he had earlier in the
- 3:24Speaker 3: season for the Flyers, we probably would be talking about
- 3:28Speaker 3: just that situation just that scenario but uh instead we
- 3:31Speaker 3: got a uh fantastic goaltending performance in key bank center
- 3:36Speaker 3: but unfortunately it wasn't from anybody wearing blue and gold.
- 3:40Speaker 1: Yeah and uh sabers from the past uh in this
- 3:44Speaker 1: next generation mike knubel's son cole knubel you know good
- 3:49Speaker 1: performance for him two goals uh you know his fans
- 3:52Speaker 1: they kept showing his his parents in the crowd for
- 3:55Speaker 1: the TNT broadcast tonight. So obviously it was a nationally
- 3:58Speaker 1: televised game in the States and you just expected, you know,
- 4:01Speaker 1: the Sabres to, you know, have just a better overall effort.
- 4:04Speaker 1: I mean, obviously there, there were times where they really
- 4:07Speaker 1: controlled the play in this game. There were times where
- 4:09Speaker 1: they look like they were going to fight back in
- 4:10Speaker 1: this game, which we'll get into with all the penalty
- 4:13Speaker 1: nonsense there in the second period that almost put the
- 4:15Speaker 1: game at a reach at that point. But, you know,
- 4:17Speaker 1: we had Darlene and Zucker come back in the lineup
- 4:20Speaker 1: tonight as well. Jonathan, obviously that was a big Zucker
- 4:23Speaker 1: getting the goal. and Darlene, just his presence back there
- 4:25Speaker 1: on the defensive side. But it seems like we're talking
- 4:29Speaker 1: about the same stuff every single week where the Sabres
- 4:32Speaker 1: are just unable to cover guys in the crease and
- 4:34Speaker 1: they just kind of lose the coverage there on rebounds.
- 4:37Speaker 1: And the Flyers scored a few more tonight that we've
- 4:39Speaker 1: kind of seen become an issue for Buffalo with some
- 4:41Speaker 1: of their key penalty killers out.
- 4:43Speaker 3: Yeah, I don't really even know what to say at
- 4:46Speaker 3: this point. I mean, like even when I look at
- 4:48Speaker 3: and we'll get into the game stats, but a lot
- 4:49Speaker 3: of the things that we've harped on in the past about,
- 4:52Speaker 3: you know, getting out hit, blocks, takeaways, all that sort of...
- 4:57Speaker 3: All the numbers look pretty decent tonight. This is just
- 5:00Speaker 3: a game that the Sabres should have had and didn't.
- 5:04Speaker 3: You got Zach Benson ringing it off crossbars, so many weird...
- 5:11Speaker 3: Even when they tried to crash the net offense and
- 5:14Speaker 3: just try to jam something in or bang something in, yeah,
- 5:17Speaker 3: Zucker got the power play goal that way, but there
- 5:18Speaker 3: was so many... moments where it's like they did all
- 5:22Speaker 3: the right things and it just didn't happen and then
- 5:26Speaker 3: on the other side you know you just get a
- 5:28Speaker 3: couple of brief lapses in judgment and it's just like
- 5:31Speaker 3: like i don't i i don't even know how you
- 5:36Speaker 3: i don't know if you can be mad about this
- 5:37Speaker 3: game if you're anybody on the coaching staff from buffalo
- 5:40Speaker 3: i mean again i think the other part of it
- 5:43Speaker 3: too is that the the reffing was truly terrible in
- 5:47Speaker 3: this game i mean Like, the missed call that leads
- 5:50Speaker 3: to the five-on-three or whatever, you know, or the phantom
- 5:54Speaker 3: call or whatever, like, that's one thing. But there was
- 5:56Speaker 3: just play after play. I'm watching the TNT broadcast, and
- 6:00Speaker 3: they're saying, oh, that should have been a penalty. Oh,
- 6:02Speaker 3: that should have been a penalty. Oh, Philly should have
- 6:03Speaker 3: got a penalty there. Like, I don't know what Rick
- 6:06Speaker 3: Tockett was paying the officials or what, but, like, it
- 6:10Speaker 3: was insane. I... Everybody was making mistakes out there, and
- 6:14Speaker 3: it seems like literally the Sabres made the fewest mistakes
- 6:17Speaker 3: and still ended up with the worst side of the
- 6:21Speaker 3: game on this one. So it just sucks.
- 6:24Speaker 1: Yeah, it does. And again, we're going to get through
- 6:26Speaker 1: the game stats, the scoring summary, everything like that. But
- 6:29Speaker 1: Lindy Ruff is at the podium here for the Sabres.
- 6:31Speaker 1: We're going to get to his thoughts first tonight, as always,
- 6:33Speaker 1: brought to you by Wild Bills Auto Repair, helping customers
- 6:35Speaker 1: stay safe and confident on the road. In Niagara since 2012,
- 6:38Speaker 1: in honor of the late William Robert Hunter, book a
- 6:40Speaker 1: repair today at 905-358-7868 or wildbillsauto.ca. I'm going to pull
- 6:45Speaker 1: up Lindy Ruff's postgame audio following their 3-1 loss to
- 6:48Speaker 1: the Philadelphia Flyers. Give me one second and I will
- 6:51Speaker 1: get to his thoughts shortly.
- 6:55Speaker 4: You know, we talked about missed nets, missed opportunities. I
- 7:01Speaker 4: think we're like 31st or 32nd when it comes to
- 7:03Speaker 4: missed nets. Obviously, it We're not offensively, you know, I
- 7:10Speaker 4: thought we had some great looks in the first period.
- 7:12Speaker 4: We had some good looks in the second period, too.
- 7:15Speaker 4: I still think we missed the net too often. Our
- 7:19Speaker 4: net front coverage, again, we just handed them an easy goal. So,
- 7:26Speaker 4: I mean, that was the two big things. They won
- 7:28Speaker 4: the net battle for a couple goals. We didn't.
- 7:30Speaker 5: How disappointing was it? You didn't seem to take a
- 7:32Speaker 5: lot of momentum from finally getting a goal.
- 7:36Speaker 4: Yeah. Well, they did a good job. I'm just going
- 7:39Speaker 4: to tell you, they checked hard. They did the same
- 7:42Speaker 4: thing to Colorado. They made you dump it in. They
- 7:44Speaker 4: checked hard. They were on the right side. They blocked
- 7:47Speaker 4: a lot of shots. I think you saw that little
- 7:51Speaker 4: flurry in the third period where they were shooting pucks.
- 7:55Speaker 4: When we're on our game, those pucks don't get through.
- 7:57Speaker 4: Our wingers are in the lanes. That's the missed opportunities.
- 8:02Speaker 5: We're limited to four shots on goal in the third period.
- 8:05Speaker 4: What does your team.
- 8:06Speaker 5: Correct or rectify that?
- 8:07Speaker 4: Yeah, you know what I think? Our guys got frustrated.
- 8:10Speaker 4: Got hard. Got frustrated. And then we turned into a
- 8:14Speaker 4: little bit of trying to get a little bit too
- 8:16Speaker 4: fancy when we hit the line. We had to get
- 8:18Speaker 4: a bold line, win some battles. Those battles have got
- 8:20Speaker 4: to turn into opportunities.
- 8:23Speaker 5: What about just the fact you're constantly playing from behind?
- 8:25Speaker 5: You're one of the least in the league for time
- 8:29Speaker 5: leading in the league.
- 8:31Speaker 4: Yeah, well, that all comes with, if you look at
- 8:33Speaker 4: those early opportunities we had, you've got to find the
- 8:35Speaker 4: back of the net. If we find the back of
- 8:38Speaker 4: the net, we'd be leading. And you look at some
- 8:41Speaker 4: of the great, you get the goalie, you made a
- 8:42Speaker 4: couple big saves, but we still have to find the
- 8:46Speaker 4: back of the net.
- 8:47Speaker 5: Jason obviously scored just, he wasn't too happy with his game.
- 8:51Speaker 5: What did you think of him overall?
- 8:52Speaker 4: Yeah, you know, I thought he gave us a good game.
- 8:57Speaker 4: I mean, great job on the power play and I
- 9:00Speaker 4: thought the effort was good. For first game back, no camp.
- 9:05Speaker 4: I'll give him a passing grade on the game for sure.
- 9:08Speaker 4: I know he expects more of himself. And a player
- 9:13Speaker 4: like that should. Matias' response after the hit on... Awesome. Awesome.
- 9:19Speaker 4: You know, he's turned into an awesome teammate. Guy that
- 9:25Speaker 4: jumped right in for his teammate when he thought he
- 9:28Speaker 4: got hit a little bit illegally and I did the
- 9:31Speaker 4: right thing.
- 9:32Speaker 6: The penalty against Owen Power for high sticking, that was
- 9:35Speaker 6: clearly one of the flyers hitting his teammate in the
- 9:37Speaker 6: face with the paddle.
- 9:38Speaker 2: How was that explained to you?
- 9:40Speaker 4: The official came over and admitted he made a mistake.
- 9:46Speaker 4: He made a mistake. Would you like to see that
- 9:48Speaker 4: become a more reviewable play?
- 9:51Speaker 1: I know it's not, but would you like to see
- 9:53Speaker 1: it become one?
- 9:53Speaker 4: It's black and white. I think when you put a
- 9:56Speaker 4: team down five on three... you've got to be right
- 10:01Speaker 4: about the call. I mean, that was the point I
- 10:02Speaker 4: made with him when he came over just after the play.
- 10:05Speaker 4: I just said, listen, you got it wrong. He said,
- 10:07Speaker 4: we know, but I said, you've got to be, if
- 10:10Speaker 4: you're going to make that call, you've got to be right.
- 10:12Speaker 4: So it was a tough call for us at that
- 10:16Speaker 4: time of the game.
- 10:17Speaker 1: Post game audio is courtesy of MSG and the National
- 10:20Speaker 1: Hockey League, as well as Buffalo Sabres dot com and
- 10:22Speaker 1: X dot com slash Buffalo Sabres. All audio rights courtesy
- 10:26Speaker 1: of the Buffalo Sabres. There was Sabres head coach Lindy
- 10:29Speaker 1: Ruff on the Wild Bills auto repair post game. Jonathan,
- 10:32Speaker 1: what were your takeaways from what Lindy said tonight?
- 10:35Speaker 3: That's a frustrated coach. That's a that's a coach who
- 10:40Speaker 3: I mean, I again, I don't. How could he have
- 10:43Speaker 3: any answers? Like, again, we made like one or two
- 10:47Speaker 3: small lapses, you know, hockey's a game of mistakes and
- 10:52Speaker 3: you make a mistake on coverage. Like I'm going back
- 10:54Speaker 3: and watching some of the goal visualizer stuff on the
- 10:57Speaker 3: flyer goals. And like, it's not just one, it's multiple
- 11:02Speaker 3: mistakes and it's, and it's guys who can't be making mistakes.
- 11:06Speaker 3: It's like, especially on that third goal, or this was the,
- 11:09Speaker 3: actually the second goal I'm looking at right now. Like
- 11:12Speaker 3: you got, Crevier and Norris miscommunicating, and both of them
- 11:16Speaker 3: come to the wall to challenge 94 on the Flyers.
- 11:22Speaker 1: Martone. Martone.
- 11:24Speaker 3: So you double-team Martone on a power... Like, you're killing
- 11:27Speaker 3: a penalty. What are you double-teaming anybody for? Like, it's
- 11:31Speaker 3: not like it's Alex Ovechkin out there when you're double-teaming to, like,
- 11:33Speaker 3: block the one-timer. Like, it's Porter Martone. Let the kid
- 11:37Speaker 3: try and beat you one-on-one. But again, you know... Crevier's
- 11:42Speaker 3: new to the system. Josh Norris, I don't know. I
- 11:45Speaker 3: don't know who's making what mistakes. I don't know. When
- 11:48Speaker 3: you look at the film, if it's Norris, shouldn't have
- 11:52Speaker 3: given so much room up to the Flyers' D-man on
- 11:55Speaker 3: the point. I don't know. I really don't know. It
- 12:00Speaker 3: just sucks that it's hard for any team in this
- 12:04Speaker 3: league to play a perfect game, but it seems like
- 12:08Speaker 3: the Sabres just cannot find anything close to a somewhat
- 12:12Speaker 3: perfect game. It's like they give us this little flash,
- 12:15Speaker 3: this little stretch where it's like, if they play like
- 12:18Speaker 3: this for 60 minutes, even 50 minutes, they're going to win.
- 12:24Speaker 3: And they just don't. They either go to sleep or
- 12:27Speaker 3: they just have a quick lapse in judgment. I don't know.
- 12:31Speaker 3: I don't know what you do. But the penalty kill
- 12:34Speaker 3: has become a problem. Like the power play is what
- 12:36Speaker 3: it is. We can talk about it. I have a
- 12:38Speaker 3: lot of faith now that Jason Zucker's back in the lineup.
- 12:41Speaker 3: I am way more concerned about their penalty kill, and
- 12:45Speaker 3: I am way more concerned about the lack of communication
- 12:48Speaker 3: that seems to happen between the forwards and I guess
- 12:53Speaker 3: just everybody on ice in general when it comes to coverage,
- 12:57Speaker 3: especially net front like Lindy said.
- 13:00Speaker 1: Yeah, he said bad net front, and he said that
- 13:03Speaker 1: the Flyers checked hard tonight almost like they did. in
- 13:06Speaker 1: the victory against a potent Colorado avalanche team.
- 13:08Speaker 4: Right.
- 13:08Speaker 1: So, I mean, Rick talk has been heavily scrutinized for
- 13:11Speaker 1: the horrendous start that the flyers have had, but they've
- 13:13Speaker 1: had a couple of good games here in a row
- 13:15Speaker 1: and have relied on their, their goaltender to come up
- 13:17Speaker 1: with some, some big saves for them when they need it. And,
- 13:19Speaker 1: you know, maybe they're turning a corner here, but you
- 13:21Speaker 1: got to give them, you know, a little bit of
- 13:23Speaker 1: credit here as well. I mean, they, they did what
- 13:25Speaker 1: they needed to do to come away with the two
- 13:26Speaker 1: points tonight, you know, and the, it may, they might
- 13:28Speaker 1: not be the most skilled team overall, but, They, they
- 13:32Speaker 1: obviously did a good enough job here against the Sabres
- 13:35Speaker 1: and the special teams. And you mentioned there, you know,
- 13:37Speaker 1: just there were some lapses that you mentioned they played.
- 13:40Speaker 1: I thought the first period, I mean, they were shot,
- 13:42Speaker 1: they got 14 shots on that. And then in the
- 13:44Speaker 1: third period they had four. So it's like, you know, what,
- 13:47Speaker 1: what are we looking at here? I know shot attempts,
- 13:49Speaker 1: Buffalo still had a lot of flyers block, a lot
- 13:51Speaker 1: of shots as well. But yeah, I mean, not to
- 13:54Speaker 1: not put a 60 minute effort in and it's difficult.
- 13:57Speaker 1: I mean, that's a cliche that everybody loves to use there,
- 13:59Speaker 1: but When you look at the metrics of this game,
- 14:01Speaker 1: the Sabres should have had enough to come away with
- 14:03Speaker 1: at least a point. You look at what they just
- 14:04Speaker 1: came off of right on that four game Atlantic road
- 14:07Speaker 1: trip where they took away six of eight points and
- 14:10Speaker 1: got a point in every single one of the games. Right.
- 14:12Speaker 1: Florida won against Toronto and then both games against Montreal.
- 14:15Speaker 1: I know they didn't lose. They lost a couple of
- 14:17Speaker 1: those games, but come away with points. There was big.
- 14:20Speaker 1: You expected them on this night, especially when they go
- 14:22Speaker 1: back on the road again in Washington and then, you know,
- 14:25Speaker 1: the California trip next week. that they were going to
- 14:28Speaker 1: be able to come away with at least a point
- 14:30Speaker 1: in this game. And it's almost like they're, they were
- 14:32Speaker 1: shell shocked, right? Like they, they thought they deserved a
- 14:35Speaker 1: better fate in this game tonight.
- 14:37Speaker 3: And you got to wonder what happened in that, in
- 14:39Speaker 3: that second intermission, because like that should have been a
- 14:41Speaker 3: rallying point, right? You get the garbage call against you
- 14:44Speaker 3: that puts you on the five on three and you
- 14:47Speaker 3: kill that off. You come back with a Jason Zucker,
- 14:50Speaker 3: you know, deflected shot power play goal, you know, the
- 14:55Speaker 3: old guy on the team's back at it. He's scoring
- 14:57Speaker 3: goals after missing so much time. Like, like all of
- 15:00Speaker 3: that should have been a rallying point. And it's almost
- 15:03Speaker 3: like all of that needed to happen in the first
- 15:06Speaker 3: five minutes of the second or the first five minutes
- 15:08Speaker 3: of the third period or something like that. It's like,
- 15:10Speaker 3: as soon as that whistle blew and they went to
- 15:13Speaker 3: the intermission, they just came out so flat. It's like,
- 15:16Speaker 3: they had no gas to like get themselves going again
- 15:20Speaker 3: in that period. And again, you know, you let, uh,
- 15:24Speaker 3: and canoe will score what three minutes into the period.
- 15:27Speaker 3: That's going to zap any life they did have. So
- 15:30Speaker 3: I just sit there and I look at that and I,
- 15:32Speaker 3: I think, how do you, how do you let that happen?
- 15:34Speaker 3: If you're Lindy rough, if you're Seth Appert, the guys
- 15:37Speaker 3: on the bench, if you're Rasmus Darlene, I get, he's
- 15:41Speaker 3: been out of the lineup and I'm sure he's not
- 15:43Speaker 3: a hundred percent, even though he was able to play tonight.
- 15:46Speaker 3: If you're a leader on that team, you need to
- 15:48Speaker 3: make sure that you are setting the tone for, And
- 15:50Speaker 3: building off your momentum and not just letting it slip
- 15:53Speaker 3: away because that was what killed them, really. The slow
- 15:57Speaker 3: start to the third zapped any chance that they had
- 16:00Speaker 3: for a comeback. And you get to within 2-1, that
- 16:04Speaker 3: should have easily been a 3-2 game at that point.
- 16:06Speaker 3: 4-2 game when it was all of a sudden done.
- 16:09Speaker 3: I don't know what else to say.
- 16:13Speaker 1: It should have been 3-0 after the Sabres got the
- 16:16Speaker 1: worst 5-on-3 call against them of all time, but it
- 16:19Speaker 1: ended up not being 3-0, which we'll get into in
- 16:21Speaker 1: the scoring summary. But yeah, just almost shell-shocked tonight with
- 16:25Speaker 1: what the result was after that one, or we're just
- 16:28Speaker 1: tired because of the late start. I don't know, maybe
- 16:30Speaker 1: a mixture of both. But we'll push forward here with
- 16:33Speaker 1: the scoring summary, or sorry, the game stats tonight brought
- 16:36Speaker 1: to you by J & L Flooring. If you think
- 16:37Speaker 1: you'd have bettered it anywhere else, you don't know Jack.

- 16:49Speaker 1: as we pull this up on the video version. For
- 16:51Speaker 1: those listening in audio, thank you very much for doing so.
- 16:54Speaker 1: I'll read them off to you real quick. The shots
- 16:56Speaker 1: on net, 28-26 in favor of Buffalo. But again, they
- 16:59Speaker 1: only had four in the third period. So the Sabres,
- 17:01Speaker 1: you know, had the shot lead through 40 minutes there.
- 17:04Speaker 1: Hits 20-14 in favor of the Flyers. Face-offs, Sabres actually
- 17:07Speaker 1: led this tonight, 27-21. is one of the worst face-off
- 17:10Speaker 1: teams in the National Hockey League. So there you go
- 17:12Speaker 1: with that. The Sabres were one for three on the
- 17:14Speaker 1: power play. The Flyers were one for five. And then
- 17:18Speaker 1: when you go down the list here, block shots, 13
- 17:20Speaker 1: all for both teams. Takeaways, two for the Flyers, five
- 17:24Speaker 1: for the Sabres, and giveaways, 16 apiece. Any takeaways from
- 17:28Speaker 1: the game stats tonight? I mean, everything looks like you
- 17:32Speaker 1: want it to look like, you know? I would say that, yeah,
- 17:37Speaker 1: we got out hit, but that's probably because Sabres had
- 17:40Speaker 1: more puck possession.
- 17:42Speaker 3: We actually look at it, especially through the first two periods. Face-offs.
- 17:46Speaker 3: We won that tonight. Not by a lot, but we
- 17:48Speaker 3: won it. We won that battle.
- 17:50Speaker 1: Power play.
- 17:50Speaker 3: We scored on the power play. I think a one
- 17:53Speaker 3: for three is a very respectable power play. Would you
- 17:57Speaker 3: want to see maybe more? Would you love to see
- 17:59Speaker 3: them go three for three? Yeah, absolutely you would, but
- 18:03Speaker 3: you did it. And even the penalty kill, which, I mean,
- 18:06Speaker 3: I have harped on it, I think, every time that
- 18:10Speaker 3: I have done this show with you this year so far. And,
- 18:13Speaker 3: you know, my whipping boy is Zach Metza. He wasn't
- 18:18Speaker 3: on for the power play goal. It was Crevier, and
- 18:21Speaker 3: it was Samuelson. So I don't have my usual whipping
- 18:26Speaker 3: boy to target here, but I talked about it briefly.
- 18:29Speaker 3: Crevier and Norris... coming over cheating on that power play.
- 18:33Speaker 3: Like you just need somebody who is a genuine penalty
- 18:37Speaker 3: killer in the lineup. And I, I'm, I'm optimistic that
- 18:41Speaker 3: Connor Timmons is the answer to all our prayers. Who'd
- 18:43Speaker 3: have thought that's a lot to put on the thorough kid.
- 18:47Speaker 3: So I, everything you saw in that stat sheet though,
- 18:50Speaker 3: is what you want to see. Like, I don't understand
- 18:53Speaker 3: like what we can, you know, gripe about it. Like
- 18:57Speaker 3: they did everything they were supposed to do, except for,
- 19:00Speaker 3: you know what? You know, that was the only thing
- 19:02Speaker 3: I didn't see on there was shot attempts. You'd love
- 19:04Speaker 3: to see shot attempts versus shots and see how much
- 19:08Speaker 3: the Sabres missed the net like Lindy was talking about
- 19:10Speaker 3: because it does seem like this team misses the net
- 19:13Speaker 3: a lot. It does seem like they hit a lot
- 19:14Speaker 3: of posts, right? Like Zach Benson hits a post, gets
- 19:18Speaker 3: another opportunity, same spot, and he picks the same spot
- 19:21Speaker 3: to shoot at, but he misses it rather than putting
- 19:24Speaker 3: it in. So maybe just do something different there. I
- 19:27Speaker 3: don't know, man.
- 19:28Speaker 4: Like....
- 19:31Speaker 3: I'm so bewildered with everything, even the lines. I was like,
- 19:35Speaker 3: I made a note at one point. I was like,
- 19:37Speaker 3: I really like Kulik centering Thompson and don't. I think
- 19:40Speaker 3: that line's really coming together. I think that, you know,
- 19:44Speaker 3: I think they were on the ice for the uh
- 19:47Speaker 3: zegras goal or no so they were on the ice
- 19:49Speaker 3: for the canoe goal second goal of the game uh
- 19:52Speaker 3: and you know thompson's in a board battle and can't
- 19:55Speaker 3: get it chipped up to coolie you probably would have
- 19:56Speaker 3: liked to see coolie come down the boards to give
- 20:00Speaker 3: a little bit more support as opposed to crevier being
- 20:02Speaker 3: backed up behind and then crevier lets two guys behind
- 20:05Speaker 3: him and that's a whole thing I don't know. I
- 20:12Speaker 3: don't know what to say. I love the lineup tonight.
- 20:15Speaker 3: I wouldn't change it. I think McLeod, centering the fourth line,
- 20:19Speaker 3: had a lot of jump. I love the Malenstein-McLeod line.
- 20:23Speaker 3: I thought they were really fast. I thought they were
- 20:26Speaker 3: skating well. I don't have anything to pull from this
- 20:29Speaker 3: game and be like, oh, that's an obvious problem. That
- 20:32Speaker 3: needs to be fixed. I don't know.
- 20:37Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean, Zucker and Darlene back in the lineup
- 20:39Speaker 1: obviously is a big deal with those two guys. Zucker
- 20:43Speaker 1: with the sport hernia surgery in the offseason. This is
- 20:45Speaker 1: his first game of the year. Darlene missed that entire
- 20:48Speaker 1: week last week, and the Sabres still came away with
- 20:50Speaker 1: six of eight points without their captain and their leader
- 20:53Speaker 1: from the back end. So you're really optimistic coming into
- 20:55Speaker 1: tonight with both those guys being back in the lineup, right? And,
- 20:58Speaker 1: you know, taking Dennis Gilbert out ended up losing them
- 21:00Speaker 1: a game. Who would have thought? But as you mentioned.
- 21:03Speaker 3: Yeah, I guess. Like, that's... I get the offensive threat
- 21:07Speaker 3: that is Dennis Gilbert.
- 21:08Speaker 5: Right.
- 21:09Speaker 3: I mean, but even like that third line.
- 21:12Speaker 1: Okay.
- 21:12Speaker 7: Right.
- 21:12Speaker 3: So Zucker's hard on himself. Doesn't love his game.
- 21:14Speaker 7: Whatever.
- 21:15Speaker 3: I thought he was fine from what I noticed. I
- 21:17Speaker 3: didn't think he was overly noticeable. And that's honestly, what
- 21:20Speaker 3: do you, would you expect from a guy who missed
- 21:21Speaker 3: training camp and had the injury yet? But like, you
- 21:23Speaker 3: look at that on paper, you have Josh Norris and
- 21:26Speaker 3: you have Jason Zucker, you know, with Consta. There's no other,
- 21:32Speaker 3: there's no two better guys on the team for constant
- 21:34Speaker 3: to learn from. For being a responsible forward and for
- 21:38Speaker 3: playing the game the right way.
- 21:39Speaker 7: Right.
- 21:40Speaker 3: Like there is not anything about that forward group that
- 21:44Speaker 3: I would be like, OK, I'm pounding the pavement. It
- 21:47Speaker 3: needs to change. But obviously it does because they need
- 21:52Speaker 3: somebody to fill the role of Alex Tuck on the
- 21:55Speaker 3: on the penalty kill and in defensive situations.
- 22:00Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean, Helenus, I mean, is it possible he
- 22:02Speaker 1: goes down to Rochester and gets top line minutes potentially?
- 22:05Speaker 1: I don't know. Again, it depends on if the Sabres
- 22:07Speaker 1: go out and get another top six forward at any
- 22:10Speaker 1: point in this sometime soon. If Coolidge stays in that
- 22:13Speaker 1: top six, I don't know. But again, when Ryan McLeod
- 22:16Speaker 1: is a fourth line center, I think in the playoffs,
- 22:18Speaker 1: I'm okay with that. But during the season, I think
- 22:19Speaker 1: he needs to be playing at least in a third
- 22:21Speaker 1: line center role. So where does that move Norris? Where
- 22:23Speaker 1: does that move Ausland? Like, I don't know. I think
- 22:26Speaker 1: the lineup, tonight should have been good enough to win.
- 22:28Speaker 1: As you mentioned, Zucker coming back, other than the offensive
- 22:30Speaker 1: zone penalty that he took, I thought he was really good.
- 22:32Speaker 1: He scored their only goal in the power play tonight,
- 22:34Speaker 1: you know, easing them back in as a third line
- 22:36Speaker 1: winger and second line power play. But I expect him
- 22:38Speaker 1: to elevate up to a top six and that top
- 22:41Speaker 1: power play unit when he starts to get healthy. I mean,
- 22:43Speaker 1: it's his first game in like four or five months.
- 22:45Speaker 1: So we got to give him some time here. But
- 22:47Speaker 1: as you mentioned on the defensive side, like when Timmons
- 22:50Speaker 1: is back, then that, that he's most likely playing with
- 22:53Speaker 1: crevy on that third pair. Like they've got what they
- 22:56Speaker 1: need right now, other than Alex Lyon, you know, still
- 22:58Speaker 1: progressing and Lindy said he's getting closer. This is basically
- 23:02Speaker 1: their full lineup now. You've got the guys that are
- 23:04Speaker 1: scratched that you expect to be scratched right now. And
- 23:07Speaker 1: that's just the way that the lineup should be. And
- 23:09Speaker 1: I think that this is the lineup that we thought
- 23:11Speaker 1: coming into the year that, okay, this is the lineup
- 23:14Speaker 1: that they're going to need to make the playoffs once again.
- 23:17Speaker 1: And right now, after one game, you know, it was
- 23:20Speaker 1: a little bit disappointing. Obviously, you want to see more
- 23:22Speaker 1: from the top guys. I thought Quinn had some really
- 23:24Speaker 1: good opportunities tonight, especially on that power play Thompson again,
- 23:29Speaker 1: like there are shifts where I don't even notice them
- 23:31Speaker 1: on the ice. And then they're like, you can just
- 23:33Speaker 1: snapshot and all of a sudden almost score the game
- 23:36Speaker 1: tying goal. So obviously Benson snake bitten, he could have
- 23:39Speaker 1: had a couple of goals tonight, hit a crossbar, had
- 23:41Speaker 1: another good opportunity off a rush. So, I mean, they're
- 23:44Speaker 1: getting the, they had the opportunities tonight. A lot of
- 23:46Speaker 1: these guys did. Ostland had that beautiful spinorama play on
- 23:49Speaker 1: the power play as well. That didn't go in. I
- 23:51Speaker 1: think at the end of the day, you just got
- 23:53Speaker 1: to tip your cap to Dan Vladar. I think he
- 23:55Speaker 1: was the reason the Flyers got the two points or
- 23:57Speaker 1: at least didn't even have to go to overtime in
- 23:59Speaker 1: this game.
- 24:00Speaker 3: Yeah, Vladar definitely was the difference maker for Philadelphia on
- 24:04Speaker 3: that side of the puck. I mean, he just was
- 24:06Speaker 3: so good at what he was doing with his way.
- 24:08Speaker 3: He was saving like point blank opportunities, weird position shots.
- 24:13Speaker 3: Like I said, like I was happy with how, like
- 24:17Speaker 3: when it, when it wasn't going well, in a more
- 24:19Speaker 3: traditional way where shots from the circles and from inside, uh,
- 24:25Speaker 3: from outside where it weren't getting to the net, they
- 24:27Speaker 3: found a way to get to the inside. Like it's
- 24:31Speaker 3: not like, Oh, the Sabres were boxed out and they
- 24:33Speaker 3: just never got a good, like they had lots of
- 24:35Speaker 3: opportunities for chaos in front of the net. I guess
- 24:38Speaker 3: they would have liked to see a couple more like
- 24:40Speaker 3: net front opportunities. I know that was something that kind of,
- 24:42Speaker 3: we just heard Lindy kind of harp on, but like,
- 24:45Speaker 3: I don't, I don't know what else you could have done, uh,
- 24:48Speaker 3: differently in this game except for maybe you you want
- 24:51Speaker 3: to see a post go in a shot go in
- 24:55Speaker 3: again there's a couple the other thing that i i
- 24:58Speaker 3: mean this is kind of just a league-wide issue and
- 25:00Speaker 3: this is the new nhl with this generation of players
- 25:03Speaker 3: there is a lack of making the simple play sometimes
- 25:06Speaker 3: you know i i'm a big north south guy keep
- 25:08Speaker 3: everything going north keep it going down low and work
- 25:11Speaker 3: from down low they did that better tonight i would
- 25:14Speaker 3: say but there's still some decision making like I saw
- 25:16Speaker 3: Jack Quinn at one point hang on to the puck
- 25:18Speaker 3: a little too long and give it up at the
- 25:21Speaker 3: blue line or whatever instead of maybe being able to
- 25:23Speaker 3: get it down beyond the goal line and see what
- 25:26Speaker 3: you can make happen from deeper inside the zone. You
- 25:30Speaker 3: can nitpick all you want, but again, it just feels
- 25:34Speaker 3: like even the analytics, right? You just brought up the
- 25:37Speaker 3: hockey stat cards here. Quinn's numbers look pretty good. Maybe
- 25:41Speaker 3: a little bit further down the lineup. You don't love
- 25:43Speaker 3: what you're seeing out of uh, Krebs and, and I
- 25:47Speaker 3: guess maybe like, I, I still didn't think that Kulik
- 25:51Speaker 3: Thompson dome were that bad, but obviously the analytics is
- 25:55Speaker 3: telling a little bit of a different story. Obviously Samuelson Darlene,
- 25:59Speaker 3: you don't love to see those numbers either, but I
- 26:02Speaker 3: don't know. I guess their best players just weren't their
- 26:03Speaker 3: best players tonight. And that's maybe the story of the
- 26:05Speaker 3: whole thing.
- 26:07Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 26:07Speaker 1: I mean, that gives you a good perspective that, you know,
- 26:11Speaker 1: they had some good performances tonight and, and a couple
- 26:14Speaker 1: of them that, I think, Tage, that's a game that
- 26:17Speaker 1: he needs to come through with a goal. He had
- 26:19Speaker 1: a couple opportunities. I thought Benson has been really snakebitten.
- 26:22Speaker 1: Although he drew a penalty tonight, he's doing all the
- 26:25Speaker 1: right things except putting the goals in. I feel like
- 26:27Speaker 1: Zach Benson is making so much of a difference on
- 26:30Speaker 1: the forecheck, in the defensive zone, setting up that great
- 26:34Speaker 1: play that he made on the shorthanded goal that Jack
- 26:36Speaker 1: Quinn made. in Montreal the other night. He's doing everything
- 26:39Speaker 1: well except putting the puck in the net, and I
- 26:41Speaker 1: think once he does that, it's going to be a
- 26:44Speaker 1: landslide for him, and he's got that confidence just going
- 26:46Speaker 1: to break through, kind of like we saw with Norris
- 26:48Speaker 1: when he finally scored. He got another goal against Montreal later,
- 26:51Speaker 1: but I feel like Benson... has been doing so many
- 26:54Speaker 1: so many good things I don't want to you know
- 26:55Speaker 1: harp on him too much because I feel like he's
- 26:57Speaker 1: just making such an impact other than putting goals and
- 27:00Speaker 1: obviously that's very important when you get those opportunities but
- 27:03Speaker 1: um he's putting himself in in the opportunities and and
- 27:06Speaker 1: the right spots to get goals he's just got to
- 27:08Speaker 1: get one in uh to be able to to kind
- 27:10Speaker 1: of break through there.
- 27:12Speaker 3: Yeah I mean like what else can the guy do
- 27:15Speaker 3: he's he's really is just so snakebitten I mean, he's
- 27:19Speaker 3: got six assists. He's a plus four on the year.
- 27:21Speaker 3: It's not like Benson's just a nothing player out there.
- 27:25Speaker 3: He is making an impact on that game. But for
- 27:27Speaker 3: a guy that I picked to score 20 goals this year,
- 27:31Speaker 3: like starting to kind of feel a little sketched out
- 27:33Speaker 3: about my pick here. Like I were 10 games in,
- 27:36Speaker 3: he's got to find the net at some point.
- 27:38Speaker 1: Right.
- 27:38Speaker 3: So, you know, unlike a guy like Jack Quinn, who's
- 27:41Speaker 3: up there leading the team in goals and points with
- 27:43Speaker 3: with 10 points, five goals on the year. right there
- 27:46Speaker 3: in lockstep with tage thompson who is like your number
- 27:49Speaker 3: one forward right so it there's just some guys that
- 27:53Speaker 3: need to get going and they will get going krebs
- 27:55Speaker 3: is still over on the year he hasn't scored a
- 27:56Speaker 3: goal but he feels like he's been all over the
- 27:58Speaker 3: ice he seems like a guy beck malenstein's usually you
- 28:01Speaker 3: know he's not a major goal scorer but he is
- 28:03Speaker 3: one of those guys that it feels like can take
- 28:05Speaker 3: a a breakout you know break away opportunity or some
- 28:10Speaker 3: kind of weird offensive play where you don't think a
- 28:12Speaker 3: fourth liner can make that kind of skill play and
- 28:14Speaker 3: Beck has shown that he can make those skill plays
- 28:16Speaker 3: sometimes so I don't know it's the analytics tell me
- 28:21Speaker 3: my their best players weren't their best players tonight the
- 28:23Speaker 3: eye test tells me that everything they did worked but
- 28:27Speaker 3: not worked well enough and they've just got to learn
- 28:30Speaker 3: to capitalize more on opportunities and I don't know if
- 28:32Speaker 3: they're squeezing the stick a little too much maybe that's
- 28:34Speaker 3: part of it but they got to find a way
- 28:36Speaker 3: to stop missing nets like Lindy said.

- 32:44Speaker 4: Hi, this is Dan Dunleavy, play-by-play voice of the Buffalo Sabres,
- 32:48Speaker 4: and you are watching and listening to Sabres Semantics.
- 32:57Speaker 2: Hey, hey, here we go, a talking night in Buffalo.
- 33:01Speaker 1: Hey, hey, here we go.
- 33:03Speaker 3: The boys in blue, white, and gold.
- 33:05Speaker 2: Hey, hey, here we go, make some noise, get in
- 33:08Speaker 2: the zone.
- 33:09Speaker 6: All for one and one for all, let's hear you.
- 33:11Speaker 8: From your heart and soul.
- 33:14Speaker 1: And we'll move on to the scoring summary tonight brought
- 33:16Speaker 1: to you by the Niagara Employment Help Center, helping people
- 33:17Speaker 1: find work in the Niagara region since 1983. Check out
- 33:19Speaker 1: the Earth Day Job Board at ehc.on.ca and call 905-358-0021
- 33:25Speaker 1: to find your next work opportunity today. And again, looking
- 33:29Speaker 1: at the scoring summary here, Jonathan, up on the screen,
- 33:32Speaker 1: the Flyers got the opening goal of this game, although
- 33:35Speaker 1: the Sabres did have an early power play that they
- 33:37Speaker 1: weren't able to capitalize on. Benson drew that one. As
- 33:41Speaker 1: we mentioned, you know, he just continues to make an
- 33:43Speaker 1: impact there. as an agitating type of player, totally forgot
- 33:47Speaker 1: that Simon Benoit was on the Philadelphia Flyers, by the way,
- 33:49Speaker 1: still thought he was a Maple Leaf, but I guess
- 33:51Speaker 1: he was involved in that dust. I don't want to
- 33:55Speaker 1: say Dustin Wolf, Joseph Woltrade, excuse me. So he was
- 34:00Speaker 1: a part of that. So he was, he was throwing
- 34:02Speaker 1: the body around and the Sabres were a little bit,
- 34:05Speaker 1: you know, had to, had to keep their guard up with,
- 34:06Speaker 1: with Simon Benoit out there thinking he was still a
- 34:08Speaker 1: Maple Leaf, but other notes I had before going into
- 34:11Speaker 1: that goal. I mean, you know, the Sabres had a
- 34:13Speaker 1: few opportunities, defenseman jumping in on the play as usual,
- 34:16Speaker 1: Samuelson playing in his 300th game tonight as well, should
- 34:19Speaker 1: mention that. But the Sabres got down one, nothing as
- 34:24Speaker 1: Cole Canoable on the rebound, his first career goal on
- 34:27Speaker 1: the point shot from Oliver Bonk, Denver Barkie. I feel
- 34:30Speaker 1: like I'm reading a London Knights box score with the
- 34:33Speaker 1: years I covered those two gentlemen in junior hockey, but
- 34:36Speaker 1: just for some reason, Samuelson and Darlene weren't able to
- 34:39Speaker 1: pick up Canoable on the side of the net. And
- 34:41Speaker 1: basically what Lindy mentioned there and what I've, I've been
- 34:43Speaker 1: saying and what we've been saying in our content group chat,
- 34:45Speaker 1: that just the net front coverage, they just lose a
- 34:48Speaker 1: guy and it ends up in the back of their net.
- 34:49Speaker 1: I can't even blame Lukanen on that goal.
- 34:51Speaker 3: No, I, I, I had no problem with Lukanen's goal
- 34:54Speaker 3: game today. I thought he was fine. Like, yeah, like
- 34:57Speaker 3: you mentioned that third goal earlier in the show.
- 35:00Speaker 1: Okay.
- 35:00Speaker 3: Maybe you want to see that one back, but like
- 35:03Speaker 3: how many NHL goalies are playing games right now when
- 35:06Speaker 3: giving up goals that you'll want back? I would say like,
- 35:09Speaker 3: 95 to 90% of the games that you see on
- 35:12Speaker 3: any given night, there's probably a goal that a goalie
- 35:15Speaker 3: should have or would want back. It's just 10 being
- 35:18Speaker 3: 10 games into the season. Like that's just what it is.
- 35:20Speaker 3: And it's, you know, there's just weird stuff happening all
- 35:23Speaker 3: over the league. So, you know, there's a lot of
- 35:26Speaker 3: noise out there, but last I checked, Connor Hellbuck is
- 35:29Speaker 3: not going to score goals. And unless you're going to
- 35:32Speaker 3: pull off, unless you're almost got some kind of crazy
- 35:34Speaker 3: magic where Mika Zibanejad is coming over from the Rangers
- 35:38Speaker 3: as a third player, but like piece a third team trade,
- 35:42Speaker 3: or maybe you can pry like a Gabe Velarde or
- 35:44Speaker 3: something at a Winnipeg. Like I don't, it's not going
- 35:48Speaker 3: to get better from just acquiring Hellebuck. They need a player.
- 35:52Speaker 3: They need an actual skater that can make a difference,
- 35:55Speaker 3: especially in defensive situations, winning a late game face-off being
- 36:00Speaker 3: on the penalty kill. That's, you know, I, I don't
- 36:04Speaker 3: know where Sam Carrick is and all of this, but
- 36:06Speaker 3: it feels like that's kind of the role that he
- 36:08Speaker 3: was brought here to do. And, it was all exciting
- 36:10Speaker 3: for all of us to have him have an extra
- 36:13Speaker 3: year on the contract, but he has not been able
- 36:15Speaker 3: to get into the lineup with any sort of consistency.
- 36:18Speaker 7: Right.
- 36:18Speaker 1: So another center they can't find a role for.
- 36:21Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 36:21Speaker 5: Right.
- 36:23Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 36:23Speaker 1: Ryan McLeod was playing the fourth line center, Sam Carrick
- 36:26Speaker 1: role tonight. So yeah, I don't know. I mean, McLeod's
- 36:28Speaker 1: name has been thrown around in that potential hella buck
- 36:30Speaker 1: trade too. So who knows with that, but, Again, the
- 36:34Speaker 1: Sabres got down one, nothing. They had another power play,
- 36:36Speaker 1: but then Oslin took a penalty. So it ended up
- 36:38Speaker 1: being four on four. So the Sabres had two early
- 36:41Speaker 1: power play opportunities to, to get on the board. Couldn't
- 36:43Speaker 1: do it. And then it's two, nothing as Zegra standing
- 36:46Speaker 1: right in the crease, Mitch Kov on the shot, Zegra
- 36:50Speaker 1: bats it out of the air in the crease. Nobody's
- 36:52Speaker 1: touching them again, just bad net front coverage. Once again,
- 36:55Speaker 1: nobody's tying them up in the crease, not blaming Lukanen
- 36:59Speaker 1: at all on this one. And that's two goals for
- 37:01Speaker 1: the Flyers with guys standing either right in front of
- 37:04Speaker 1: or right beside Lukanen that aren't accounted for. And it's
- 37:07Speaker 1: two nothing Flyers just like that.
- 37:09Speaker 3: Yeah, you would like you like to see Noah Oslin
- 37:11Speaker 3: have a little bit more discipline there. I mean, any
- 37:13Speaker 3: time a guy is taking a penalty while you are
- 37:16Speaker 3: on the power play like that's that's a problem.
- 37:18Speaker 1: That's got to be changed.
- 37:19Speaker 3: That's got to be fixed. I think Noah Oslin's kind
- 37:20Speaker 3: of run in some penalty trouble in the last couple
- 37:23Speaker 3: of games as of late. He's a guy you want
- 37:25Speaker 3: to see a little be a little bit more disciplined.
- 37:28Speaker 3: You know, he's a shifty forward. He's very good with
- 37:30Speaker 3: a puck on his stick, but it really does seem
- 37:32Speaker 3: like he, that undersized element to him, him losing some
- 37:37Speaker 3: of these battles along the wall is leading to some
- 37:40Speaker 3: of these issues where we're seeing him be a little
- 37:42Speaker 3: bit undisciplined. And yeah, I mean, again, you want to
- 37:46Speaker 3: see things cleaned up. You want a little better coverage
- 37:51Speaker 3: in front of your net. You want to give your
- 37:52Speaker 3: goalie the best chance to make the save and he's
- 37:55Speaker 3: going to have a lot easier time stopping a puck
- 37:57Speaker 3: that's in front of them and taken from 15 or
- 38:00Speaker 3: 20 feet out as opposed to something that's getting bounced around.
- 38:03Speaker 1: Two feet in front of them. And then Quinn takes
- 38:06Speaker 1: a late penalty after the Sabres for whatever reason sort
- 38:08Speaker 1: of lost Tyson Forster in the neutral zone. He gains
- 38:12Speaker 1: almost as a breakaway. Quinn hauls him down. No penalty
- 38:14Speaker 1: shot given, but the Flyers got a power play right
- 38:16Speaker 1: at the end of the period there. So not a
- 38:18Speaker 1: great end of the period for Buffalo, even though they
- 38:20Speaker 1: outshot Philadelphia 14-9. They're down 2-0 on the score sheet
- 38:24Speaker 1: and Philly starts the second period with basically an entire
- 38:27Speaker 1: power play. So again, I was just kind of like
- 38:30Speaker 1: that gift where the guy kind of shakes his head.
- 38:32Speaker 1: And that was me after the first period. Like I
- 38:34Speaker 1: couldn't believe the Flyers were up to nothing after what
- 38:38Speaker 1: we saw in that first period, because I thought the
- 38:39Speaker 1: Sabres did enough to at least score a goal in
- 38:42Speaker 1: that period. Second period, again, no scoring until late, but
- 38:46Speaker 1: we obviously got to talk about what happened in the
- 38:48Speaker 1: middle of that period there. The Sabres got called for
- 38:51Speaker 1: a penalty there. At one point. And again, I'm not
- 38:55Speaker 1: going to complain about that penalty too much, but it
- 38:58Speaker 1: was the one after that proceeded where you heard Lindy
- 39:01Speaker 1: rough asked, he was asked about that in the post
- 39:04Speaker 1: game that the ref said he made a mistake on it. And,
- 39:07Speaker 1: you know, hopefully that they changed the rule on that
- 39:09Speaker 1: where even if it's not a double minor, they can
- 39:11Speaker 1: still review the damn thing because it was a clear
- 39:14Speaker 1: flyers own high stick, not Owen power. We saw Owen power,
- 39:19Speaker 1: maybe the most fired up as he's ever been. In
- 39:21Speaker 1: the penalty box, they're telling the ref to look up
- 39:23Speaker 1: at the screen. And, uh you know the the fans
- 39:25Speaker 1: were obviously into it lindy ruff was into it uh
- 39:28Speaker 1: the sabers end up going down five five on three
- 39:31Speaker 1: but we're able to kill that off but i mean
- 39:32Speaker 1: if they were if they would have if the flyers
- 39:34Speaker 1: would have scored there jonathan made it three nothing that's
- 39:36Speaker 1: all we would have been talking about on this post
- 39:38Speaker 1: game show was that missed call and the reason why
- 39:41Speaker 1: buffalo couldn't come back from down three as opposed to
- 39:43Speaker 1: down two but what were your whole takeaways from what
- 39:46Speaker 1: happened in that sequence I.
- 39:48Speaker 3: Mean, at the end of the day, I'm just proud
- 39:50Speaker 3: of the penalty killers. Like it would have been so
- 39:53Speaker 3: easy to get so rattled and just like mail it in. And,
- 39:58Speaker 3: you know, we've seen this power, this penalty kill struggle.
- 40:02Speaker 3: I've had my gripes with it. We gave up that
- 40:04Speaker 3: goal to Zegers already once.
- 40:06Speaker 1: Right.
- 40:06Speaker 3: But they stepped up on that five on three and
- 40:09Speaker 3: they made a great kill. And then you turn around
- 40:12Speaker 3: and you draw a penalty. Right. I mean, Sanheim makes
- 40:16Speaker 3: an obvious mistake. Obviously Benson went ahead and really took
- 40:19Speaker 3: advantage of selling it. But I mean, it was as
- 40:22Speaker 3: obvious a high stick as you can get going the
- 40:24Speaker 3: other way. Like nobody else is around. Sanheim hits the
- 40:28Speaker 3: side of Benson's helmet. It gives a little dramatic head
- 40:32Speaker 3: back after it, like a little delayed soccer kind of thing.
- 40:35Speaker 3: But we, you know, you got to draw that call
- 40:38Speaker 3: out of them. You got to make that ref make
- 40:40Speaker 3: up that makeup call. And I mean, that wasn't even
- 40:42Speaker 3: a makeup call. That was just a call that should
- 40:43Speaker 3: have been made. So, I don't know, because again, it
- 40:49Speaker 3: would be so easy to be like, oh, well, I'm
- 40:52Speaker 3: going to give the penalty killers a pass because they
- 40:54Speaker 3: got scored on. But that wasn't the story. The story
- 40:57Speaker 3: was that they killed it off, and they got a
- 40:59Speaker 3: power play of their own, and they made the Flyers pay.
- 41:03Speaker 3: So that should have been the rallying point. All of
- 41:06Speaker 3: that positive momentum that we had in the last five
- 41:10Speaker 3: minutes of the second period they should have carried over
- 41:16Speaker 3: to the third and it didn't. And that's the problem.
- 41:19Speaker 3: And why did that happen? And that's, that's the question
- 41:22Speaker 3: that needs to be asked, right? That's the question, you know, why,
- 41:26Speaker 3: why are we watching, uh, Tate Thompson kind of, you know,
- 41:32Speaker 3: lose a battle on the boards. And why is Kulik
- 41:38Speaker 3: not supporting it? Why is crevier trying to blow the
- 41:40Speaker 3: zone and cheat up behind like, you guys have to
- 41:44Speaker 3: give yourselves the best opportunity and like the amount of
- 41:48Speaker 3: unsupported puck plays that go on on this team, every
- 41:53Speaker 3: single game, it just drives me insane.
- 41:58Speaker 1: It does. And the Sabres have not led after two
- 42:00Speaker 1: periods all season long for 10 games, which is a
- 42:02Speaker 1: wild statistic. Crazy. Yeah. Just crazy to think about. They
- 42:07Speaker 1: brought up on the, the TNT broadcast tonight, but as
- 42:10Speaker 1: you mentioned, the Sabres do get their lone goal. And
- 42:12Speaker 1: this was, Pretty much the bright spot positive tonight. Jason
- 42:15Speaker 1: Zucker getting back in the lineup after the sports hernia
- 42:17Speaker 1: surgery in the offseason. He makes an immediate impact with
- 42:21Speaker 1: a jump here and is able to redirect that puck
- 42:24Speaker 1: out front from the pass from Jack Quinn. He's right
- 42:27Speaker 1: in the right spot to redirect that in. He's sitting
- 42:30Speaker 1: there right in the crease. It goes off of his
- 42:31Speaker 1: leg or off maybe a stick. I think it went
- 42:33Speaker 1: off of something. But Zucker putting himself in a great
- 42:36Speaker 1: spot there to redirect it in. And I know it
- 42:38Speaker 1: was technically at the end of the power play and
- 42:40Speaker 1: it was the second unit out there. But that's what
- 42:43Speaker 1: Jason Zucker does well. That's why his veteran presence is
- 42:45Speaker 1: so valuable on this team. And that's why it's so
- 42:48Speaker 1: good to have him back in the lineup. He just
- 42:49Speaker 1: brings such a juice. You can see when he scores
- 42:51Speaker 1: goals and how energetic he is. But for him to
- 42:54Speaker 1: get the Sabres only goal tonight was almost fitting.
- 42:58Speaker 3: Yeah, I guess again, we have all that life brought
- 43:02Speaker 3: into the team. You got the veteran, you got the
- 43:04Speaker 3: old guy, you got Zucker doing what he does. you know,
- 43:07Speaker 3: proving that he is a key piece of the power
- 43:09Speaker 3: play and, and can really be that net front presence
- 43:12Speaker 3: that it seems like they have struggled to find someone
- 43:15Speaker 3: to play that role. And then it just disappears all
- 43:19Speaker 3: that energy, all that, just like, like, I know I've
- 43:22Speaker 3: seen enough of Jason Zucker. There's no way he was
- 43:24Speaker 3: not fired up and yelling at the boys and, and
- 43:27Speaker 3: getting them going and riled up. Why did they come
- 43:30Speaker 3: out so flat footed to start the third? That's, that's
- 43:34Speaker 3: the question. And I, then we don't have an answer
- 43:36Speaker 3: on it. And all you can do is hope that
- 43:39Speaker 3: it does get better. You know, I, uh, I don't know.
- 43:45Speaker 3: They got it. They got to score early and they
- 43:48Speaker 3: got to stop playing from behind in these games so
- 43:50Speaker 3: that they don't have to worry about a flat third
- 43:53Speaker 3: period start. You know, it's a lot easier to get
- 43:55Speaker 3: up for a game when you're already up and winning
- 43:57Speaker 3: it and feeling good.
- 43:58Speaker 2: Right.
- 43:58Speaker 3: So I just, it's just such a shame because that
- 44:02Speaker 3: whole five minute sequence could have been such a, a
- 44:05Speaker 3: launching point for this team and, and, you know, the
- 44:08Speaker 3: thing that drives them towards a run up the standings.
- 44:11Speaker 3: And instead we're sitting here talking about how somehow an
- 44:16Speaker 3: intermission zapped all of that life out, out of their game.
- 44:19Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 44:19Speaker 1: You mentioned the last five minutes of the second period
- 44:21Speaker 1: was really good for Buffalo. They got that goal. Benson
- 44:23Speaker 1: drew another penalty and they were just flying around. Jack
- 44:26Speaker 1: Quinn and Owen power had a really nice shift where
- 44:29Speaker 1: both of them had multiple opportunities. Quinn rang a post.
- 44:32Speaker 1: They were buzzing, and then how they come out flat
- 44:35Speaker 1: in that third period, I don't understand. Lindy doesn't even
- 44:38Speaker 1: really understand when he was asked about that after they
- 44:41Speaker 1: had so much momentum going into the second intermission. I
- 44:43Speaker 1: don't know if it was anything specifically that Talkett and
- 44:45Speaker 1: the Flyers did. I just don't think the Sabres were
- 44:47Speaker 1: able to build off of that, and it ends up
- 44:49Speaker 1: being a 3-1 game with, don't call me Mike, but
- 44:52Speaker 1: Cole Kniebel with his second goal of the game. Power
- 44:56Speaker 1: loses the stick battle. Kniebel banks it in off Lukanen.
- 45:00Speaker 1: who was really aggressive out of the crease. Uh, and he,
- 45:02Speaker 1: he was able to bank it in off of his
- 45:05Speaker 1: left skate or the back part of his pad and
- 45:07Speaker 1: into the net. Again, this is really the only goal
- 45:09Speaker 1: I want to have Lukanen stop, but I thought he
- 45:11Speaker 1: came up with some big saves in the second period, uh, that, uh,
- 45:14Speaker 1: that kept the Sabres, uh, in it as well as
- 45:17Speaker 1: on the penalty kill where the Sabres could have gone
- 45:19Speaker 1: down three, nothing. So even though that third goal is
- 45:21Speaker 1: one that, yeah, like Lukanen, what are you doing, bro?
- 45:23Speaker 1: Why are you so far out of the crease? Uh,
- 45:26Speaker 1: you know, it could have been four fires could add
- 45:28Speaker 1: four goals, uh, in that set after the second period ended. So, uh,
- 45:32Speaker 1: I'm not going to harp on Lucan and too much yet.
- 45:34Speaker 1: Was it a bad goal? Sure. But, um, there was
- 45:36Speaker 1: a lot more to critique tonight than the goaltending. I don't,
- 45:38Speaker 1: we don't want to beat a dead horse in the show. Um,
- 45:41Speaker 1: and again, everybody, any goal that gets let in the
- 45:43Speaker 1: Sabres fans just want to scream for Connor Hellebuck, but, um,
- 45:47Speaker 1: you know, it was just a sneaky, a sneaky bank
- 45:49Speaker 1: play by a canoe bowl that, uh, Lucan and wants
- 45:51Speaker 1: to have back, but, Again, I think that's on Owen
- 45:54Speaker 1: Power losing his stick. And then, you know, the Flyers
- 45:58Speaker 1: being able to gain the zone on a guy, basically
- 46:00Speaker 1: a guy without a stick and just bad, you know,
- 46:03Speaker 1: zone coverage as the zone entry happened for Philadelphia on
- 46:06Speaker 1: that play. So that was essentially the third goal there.
- 46:09Speaker 1: I don't know if you got any thoughts on it.
- 46:11Speaker 3: Is that the first goal or the third goal that
- 46:13Speaker 3: Power lost his stick on? Because I'm looking at the visualizer.
- 46:15Speaker 3: Maybe they've just got it wrong online. But I've got
- 46:18Speaker 3: Thompson on the boards losing that battle unsupported by Crevier, right? uh,
- 46:23Speaker 3: Cravier should have had the clear. He gets his pocket
- 46:26Speaker 3: picked by Canoble. And then it's Metsa left alone to defend. Um, uh,
- 46:34Speaker 3: not quite a two on one, but it's basically like
- 46:36Speaker 3: three or four sabers all converge in the middle of
- 46:38Speaker 3: the ice. He takes it wide. And that's what allows
- 46:40Speaker 3: him to make that play on Luke. And in where he,
- 46:43Speaker 3: maybe you would like to see, especially with the amount
- 46:44Speaker 3: of support that Metsa had coming back down the middle forum,
- 46:48Speaker 3: you would have liked to see him maybe chase, uh,
- 46:52Speaker 3: chase Canoobo.
- 46:53Speaker 1: There, but I don't know.
- 46:55Speaker 3: I don't know. Maybe, maybe they got the wrong players
- 46:58Speaker 3: listed on the ice in terms of who, who did what,
- 47:00Speaker 3: but I'm looking at it and I'm just thinking that
- 47:02Speaker 3: there are multiple battles. We're not, that we're not one.
- 47:06Speaker 3: And yeah, your goalie has the chance to bail you out.
- 47:09Speaker 3: A great goalie can bail you out in a lot
- 47:11Speaker 3: of situations, but they can't bail you out at every
- 47:15Speaker 3: single one. Like even, even a Dominic Hasek, even Ryan Miller,
- 47:20Speaker 3: still had their moments where enough mistakes and breakdowns happened
- 47:23Speaker 3: in front of them. They were going to let in
- 47:26Speaker 3: the sloppy goal. So it is what it is. You
- 47:30Speaker 3: want to see the save there. You want to see
- 47:32Speaker 3: them stay in it, but the whole play shouldn't have
- 47:34Speaker 3: even happened. And it starts with some sloppy board play
- 47:37Speaker 3: based on the replays that I'm watching here.
- 47:40Speaker 1: And then to end the period, the only other thing
- 47:42Speaker 1: that all that I, I wrote down was McDonald had
- 47:45Speaker 1: the big hit on Ryan McLeod and the, in the
- 47:48Speaker 1: open ice that was obviously ugly, but Samuelson went right
- 47:51Speaker 1: to his aid and the Flyers actually had a two
- 47:53Speaker 1: on one opportunity the other way. The refs didn't want
- 47:54Speaker 1: to blow the whistle because the Flyers almost scored in
- 47:56Speaker 1: the play, but good on Samuelson. A couple of years ago,
- 47:58Speaker 1: he was criticized for not stepping in in a situation
- 48:01Speaker 1: like that. And he's really taken a step as a
- 48:03Speaker 1: leader on this team last few seasons. And, you know,
- 48:06Speaker 1: Lindy was obviously, you know, loved it as well. He
- 48:08Speaker 1: gets the instigator, the Sabres end up, you know, having
- 48:11Speaker 1: two minutes and 45 seconds left. after that penalty ended
- 48:15Speaker 1: and they needed two goals. Anyway, the goalie was pulled
- 48:17Speaker 1: with two 30 left. Vladar had one big save on
- 48:20Speaker 1: Jacqueline with about a minute 20 left, but again, the
- 48:22Speaker 1: saber still needed two goals regardless. But I, I liked
- 48:26Speaker 1: Samuelson's response. And that was basically it that I wrote
- 48:29Speaker 1: down here.
- 48:31Speaker 3: I know other thoughts. I mean, you want to, you
- 48:33Speaker 3: love the response. You just wouldn't, I just would have
- 48:36Speaker 3: rather seen that response in a position of strength, because
- 48:41Speaker 3: at the end of the day, Samuelson's, what, third best
- 48:45Speaker 3: defenseman out there? Probably the fourth best in terms of offense.
- 48:48Speaker 3: I mean, you can weigh that against him and Zellweger, right?
- 48:53Speaker 3: You kind of needed him at the end of the game.
- 48:56Speaker 3: And I know there's enough talk online about Sabres needing
- 48:59Speaker 3: a heavy and all that sort of stuff. This does
- 49:03Speaker 3: nothing to fuel the fire or not fuel the fire
- 49:06Speaker 3: on that particular talking point, unfortunately. But At the end
- 49:11Speaker 3: of the day, you have somebody wearing a letter who
- 49:14Speaker 3: stepped up to defend a guy who got his clock
- 49:18Speaker 3: cleaned at Center Ice. So you kind of like it.
- 49:22Speaker 3: You kind of have to love it. I just personally,
- 49:25Speaker 3: when you're chasing a game like that and you're down two,
- 49:29Speaker 3: could have waited. Maybe somebody else could have dealt with
- 49:33Speaker 3: that a shift or two later whenever McDonald was back
- 49:37Speaker 3: on the ice because you kind of kind of need
- 49:41Speaker 3: Samuelson and he could have been a difference maker on
- 49:43Speaker 3: the offensive side of the puck, but.
- 49:45Speaker 1: And a precious, precious last four minutes too. Cause you
- 49:47Speaker 1: needed to.
- 49:48Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 49:48Speaker 5: Right.
- 49:48Speaker 3: Like, like, you know, we're, we're chasing points all, all
- 49:52Speaker 3: over the place. The, the Atlantic is a nightmare right now.
- 49:55Speaker 8: Right.
- 49:56Speaker 3: Like the Sabres could have won this game, knocked the
- 49:58Speaker 3: Leafs out of the playoffs or playoff picture.
- 50:01Speaker 5: Right.
- 50:01Speaker 3: Right now. The, you know, the Sens get a win
- 50:05Speaker 3: against Florida tonight. So now Florida's down in the wild card.
- 50:08Speaker 3: The Sens are up into the top three. And Buffalo, yeah,
- 50:13Speaker 3: they're only two points out right now. But they've got
- 50:16Speaker 3: work to do. Like, Florida's got a game in hand.
- 50:18Speaker 3: Ottawa's got a game in hand. Tampa's got a game
- 50:20Speaker 3: in hand. Like, you are chasing up the standings. Montreal's
- 50:24Speaker 3: got a game in hand. And they're ahead on points percentage. Like,
- 50:29Speaker 3: you don't have too many opportunities to squander. So you
- 50:33Speaker 3: better be able to.
- 50:36Speaker 3: You know, wrestle away points from teams that are lesser.
- 50:39Speaker 3: And obviously the Flyers are not as bad as their
- 50:41Speaker 3: nine and O or O and nine start, but they're
- 50:44Speaker 3: also not as good as their three game winning streak.
- 50:46Speaker 3: They've got going on right now. They're a young team.
- 50:48Speaker 3: They're vulnerable. They have a goalie who some days he's Superman.
- 50:52Speaker 3: And some days he is an absolute, you know, tire
- 50:55Speaker 3: fire in the net, but you cannot be giving up
- 51:00Speaker 3: points and you cannot be taking great players off the
- 51:04Speaker 3: ice to deal with that maybe somebody else on the
- 51:09Speaker 3: ice or on the bench could have been more apt
- 51:12Speaker 3: to deal with at a later point in the game.
- 51:15Speaker 3: Because the other thing too is, okay, we lost Samus,
- 51:17Speaker 3: and we also put us on the penalty kill when
- 51:20Speaker 3: you're trying to chase the game. So I love it,
- 51:24Speaker 3: but from a strategic standpoint, like it just, I don't know.
- 51:30Speaker 1: The Flyers would take that any day.
- 51:32Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 51:33Speaker 3: Yeah, absolutely. They were happy to get Samuelson out of
- 51:36Speaker 3: the game and off the ice and be on the
- 51:39Speaker 3: power play.
- 51:39Speaker 1: Like they're going to two more minutes o'clock.
- 51:42Speaker 3: Yeah. Like it's just, it just, it's a sucky situation
- 51:45Speaker 3: with the way the instigator works and the way that
- 51:48Speaker 3: we have to deal. Every single big hit has to
- 51:51Speaker 3: be addressed. And all that.
- 51:53Speaker 1: No, if he didn't, if Samuelson didn't jump in there,
- 51:55Speaker 1: that's all they would have heard from the, from the
- 51:57Speaker 1: fan base at all this team.
- 51:58Speaker 3: Oh yeah.
- 51:58Speaker 1: You know, these guys aren't sticking up for each other.
- 52:01Speaker 1: What's going on with the room. And then the whole
- 52:03Speaker 1: narrative was just changed at that point.
- 52:06Speaker 3: I've I'm if you are a team that lacks in
- 52:09Speaker 3: the enforcer department, I have always said I would rather
- 52:13Speaker 3: you take a fine or even a suspension than have
- 52:17Speaker 3: a stupid fight because you know what makes a guy
- 52:21Speaker 3: actually really think twice when he sees the highlights and watches.
- 52:26Speaker 3: Name your player, snap somebody's ankle with a golf shot
- 52:30Speaker 3: to the ankle.
- 52:31Speaker 4: Right.
- 52:32Speaker 3: Like you, anybody we I feel like that's what Rasmus
- 52:36Speaker 3: did earlier in his career.
- 52:37Speaker 5: Right.
- 52:38Speaker 3: Like there was a turning point where he was kind
- 52:40Speaker 3: of targeted. He got a lot of abuse from a
- 52:43Speaker 3: lot of players when he was younger. And then all
- 52:44Speaker 3: of a sudden he popped a couple of guys with
- 52:47Speaker 3: big hits and with cross checks that were questionable. And
- 52:50Speaker 3: it seems like, yes, he's a pest and he's a
- 52:53Speaker 3: target because of how good he is. He does have
- 52:55Speaker 3: a little bit more space to work out there. And
- 52:57Speaker 3: I feel like on a team like the Sabres showing
- 53:01Speaker 3: that you guys are a little bit crazy and you'll
- 53:04Speaker 3: do something that with a, that has a screw loose
- 53:07Speaker 3: actually goes further than the old. All right, let's all
- 53:10Speaker 3: pile in and, and, or somebody is going to drop
- 53:12Speaker 3: the gloves and avenge their teammate. Like if McLeod gets
- 53:14Speaker 3: up on his next shift and just slashes someone as
- 53:18Speaker 3: hard as he possibly can and gets kicked out of
- 53:21Speaker 3: the game that way. I don't know. I, I, I
- 53:24Speaker 3: don't know. Maybe I've got the wrong attitude here, but
- 53:28Speaker 3: it just seems like with the way that enforcers in
- 53:31Speaker 3: that role has gone in the NHL and the lack
- 53:34Speaker 3: of ones that are actually skilled enough to be beneficial
- 53:37Speaker 3: on the other side of the ice, I don't think
- 53:41Speaker 3: trading for one makes a lot of sense right now.
- 53:44Speaker 1: So let's get connected with our fans, Jonathan, with our
- 53:47Speaker 1: fan polls tonight brought to you by the Niagara Denture Clinic,
- 53:49Speaker 1: creating natural smiles in the Niagara region for over 25 years.
- 53:52Speaker 1: Visit them today at 5501 Drummond Road in Niagara Falls
- 53:54Speaker 1: or give their friendly staff a call at 905-353-1552 to
- 53:59Speaker 1: get started today. And again, make sure to give us
- 54:01Speaker 1: a follow on X at Saber Semantics so you can
- 54:03Speaker 1: get in on our fan polls after all of our shows. Jonathan,
- 54:06Speaker 1: take it away.
- 54:06Speaker 3: All right, I put two up tonight. And the first one,
- 54:10Speaker 3: a simple yes or no question. Can the Sabers fix
- 54:13Speaker 3: their special team issues without adding a player? Right now, 27.3%
- 54:17Speaker 3: in the yes column. 72.7% in the no column. So, yeah,
- 54:25Speaker 3: obviously people are looking for Jarmo to get busy, to
- 54:29Speaker 3: come up with something here, to potentially shake up the
- 54:33Speaker 3: special teams and really get the Sabres out of the
- 54:37Speaker 3: bottom of the barrel in both penalty kill and in
- 54:40Speaker 3: power play percentage. The other poll was, did Buffalo get
- 54:44Speaker 3: goalied by Dan Vladar? 9.1% say it happens. Sabres made
- 54:50Speaker 3: it easy in the third, 36.4%. And 54.5% of people
- 54:56Speaker 3: think that the Sabres were just outplayed as a whole tonight.
- 55:00Speaker 3: I can't sit here and say that that would have
- 55:01Speaker 3: been my option. I think they made it easy on
- 55:04Speaker 3: them in the third. I think that was a big
- 55:06Speaker 3: part of it. But when I look at the polls here,
- 55:14Speaker 3: there's a disgruntled fan base here. uh weighing in here
- 55:17Speaker 3: for uh sabers semantics and our southern ontario sabers fans
- 55:21Speaker 3: because uh it's doom and gloom after a 3-1 loss
- 55:26Speaker 3: and i don't blame them but this team needs this
- 55:31Speaker 3: team needs to get to work and they gotta get
- 55:33Speaker 3: to work soon.
- 55:35Speaker 1: Yeah i mean again i i was really happy with
- 55:37Speaker 1: the the four game atlantic trip even though they lost
- 55:39Speaker 1: some of the games they came away with points but again,
- 55:42Speaker 1: when you're facing teams like Philadelphia, like you just got
- 55:45Speaker 1: to come away with the two points. I'm sorry. That's
- 55:46Speaker 1: just at the end of the day, like this is
- 55:48Speaker 1: a team that you need to, that was right to
- 55:50Speaker 1: be beaten, especially for the Sabres playing their only home
- 55:53Speaker 1: game until the month of November now. So again, Canuba
- 55:58Speaker 1: was first star of Ladar was second star in the
- 56:00Speaker 1: building tonight makes 27 saves and Zucker was third star
- 56:04Speaker 1: for the Sabres. So again, like just, Just tough to
- 56:08Speaker 1: see when you're Buffalo and you're trying to figure out
- 56:11Speaker 1: on the schedule when you're going to pick up points. Right.
- 56:13Speaker 1: Because when you look at that, we already had the
- 56:15Speaker 1: standings up on the board here. The Sabres are now four,
- 56:19Speaker 1: four and two on the season. So, again, very much
- 56:22Speaker 1: mixed results so far. So, again, we'll have to wait
- 56:25Speaker 1: and see Saturday against Alex Tuck in Washington. But before
- 56:29Speaker 1: we get out of here, we're going to put Jonathan
- 56:30Speaker 1: on the spot with our stick tap. The game brought
- 56:32Speaker 1: to you by Carmine's Pizza Italiano. Checked about the award-winning
- 56:35Speaker 1: menu today at Carmine'sPizzaBria.ca. You've tried the rest. Now, why
- 56:38Speaker 1: not try the best? Carmine's Pizza Bria Italiano, proudly serving
- 56:40Speaker 1: the Niagara community since 2013. Is it going to be
- 56:43Speaker 1: number 17 tonight, or are you going to pick somebody else?
- 56:47Speaker 3: I mean, that's kind of where I was leaning. I mean,
- 56:50Speaker 3: even though I just went on the rant I did,
- 56:52Speaker 3: I was looking at maybe going with Samuelson. I mean,
- 56:55Speaker 3: he was dash one on the night. So, as much
- 56:57Speaker 3: as I love him standing up, I can't love that
- 57:01Speaker 3: too much. So, I guess... I'm going to take the
- 57:05Speaker 3: low-hanging fruit. I'm happy Jason Zucker was back in the lineup.
- 57:08Speaker 3: I think he made a big difference for the boys,
- 57:10Speaker 3: and I expect that this is just the beginning of
- 57:14Speaker 3: Zucker making a positive impact now that he's back with
- 57:18Speaker 3: the Sabres.
- 57:19Speaker 1: Here are the player stats for the game for the
- 57:22Speaker 1: Sabres as you're kind of looking at it there. Again,
- 57:25Speaker 1: with Zucker, his first game back, he played... where was it?
- 57:30Speaker 1: 12 minutes and 16 seconds. He didn't get the goal
- 57:33Speaker 1: and he had 27 seconds on the power play and
- 57:35Speaker 1: he scored. So, uh, that second unit came out late
- 57:38Speaker 1: in the second period and he got that goal for Buffalo. So, uh,
- 57:41Speaker 1: I don't know if there's anything else that sticks out
- 57:42Speaker 1: to you or anybody you want to mention that obviously
- 57:44Speaker 1: other than Zucker and Quinn didn't get on the score
- 57:47Speaker 1: sheet tonight. Uh, well, at least Quinn got some assists
- 57:51Speaker 1: looks like, uh, I thought I saw that he got, yeah,
- 57:54Speaker 1: he got the primary power play assist, right?
- 57:56Speaker 3: So, Yeah, at least he's still making plays. Oslin, I thought,
- 58:01Speaker 3: could have probably had a couple. You know, Consta maybe
- 58:05Speaker 3: is the big one to circle here. Only nine minutes
- 58:08Speaker 3: of ice time. I mean, it kind of feels like
- 58:12Speaker 3: he is that candidate for going down to Rochester if
- 58:18Speaker 3: they want to shake things up. If you want to
- 58:20Speaker 3: maybe make a third line that involves, like if you
- 58:23Speaker 3: want to push Josh Norris to the wing and maybe
- 58:25Speaker 3: move McLeod up to center. Sucker and Norris, and then
- 58:29Speaker 3: you could bring Carrick back in the lineup to center
- 58:31Speaker 3: the fourth line. It feels like that's a spot you
- 58:34Speaker 3: can do that. I'm not 100% sure. I think due
- 58:38Speaker 3: to the playoff rules, Consta has burned a year of
- 58:42Speaker 3: his contract, right? So his contract is ticking, which you
- 58:47Speaker 3: don't love. It's not that it handcuffs them, but it
- 58:51Speaker 3: definitely makes you think that you probably would like to
- 58:54Speaker 3: see him stay in the lineup and earn his place
- 58:58Speaker 3: to be in that lineup in the regular season. And
- 59:00Speaker 3: I just don't know if we've seen enough from Consta
- 59:03Speaker 3: to justify him being in the lineup anymore.
- 59:06Speaker 1: And again, it's not like he has to go through
- 59:08Speaker 1: waivers or anything. So I think it'd be good maybe
- 59:09Speaker 1: to get him down in Rochester, have him play on
- 59:11Speaker 1: the top line, the top power play, get some, you know,
- 59:13Speaker 1: pot in some points, get him some confidence. Cause it
- 59:15Speaker 1: seems like he's just, he's just lacking in it right now.
- 59:18Speaker 1: He's not the same kind of doesn't have the same
- 59:20Speaker 1: confidence we saw in the playoffs last season. So it
- 59:23Speaker 1: just seems like if you're going to play them on
- 59:25Speaker 1: the third or fourth line, I just don't know if
- 59:27Speaker 1: that is necessarily a, where he needs to be playing
- 59:29Speaker 1: and rather than be playing top line in Rochester, to
- 59:31Speaker 1: be honest with you, and then have him get called
- 59:33Speaker 1: back up. This won't be a full season, you know,
- 59:35Speaker 1: send down for, for constant Helen. So I think if
- 59:37Speaker 1: he goes down there, he'll be back up, you know, maybe,
- 59:40Speaker 1: maybe in five or 10 games, who knows, or if
- 59:41Speaker 1: there's a knock on wood, he'd be the first call
- 59:44Speaker 1: it back. So with Zucker back in the lineup and McLeod,
- 59:47Speaker 1: I just don't think fourth line center is the right
- 59:49Speaker 1: role for him. I think you need to get Carrick
- 59:51Speaker 1: in there. So where do you put McLeod in that
- 59:53Speaker 1: top six, you know, probably on in Helen, who's a
- 59:56Speaker 1: spot or you're moving, You know, as you mentioned, another
- 59:58Speaker 1: winger or again, they got so many centers on this
- 1:00:00Speaker 1: team that one of them is going to have to
- 1:00:02Speaker 1: play wing or at least two of them. So it
- 1:00:05Speaker 1: is what it is. But that's kind of, you know,
- 1:00:07Speaker 1: this is our final thoughts on what we saw there.
- 1:00:11Speaker 1: The the time on ice leader for the Sabres was
- 1:00:13Speaker 1: Darlene at twenty six point twenty six minutes, twenty seven seconds.
- 1:00:17Speaker 1: So welcome back to the lineup for Rasmus. Power was
- 1:00:20Speaker 1: just under him at twenty six minutes and twelve seconds
- 1:00:22Speaker 1: on the back end. And then for forwards, Benson, led the, uh,
- 1:00:26Speaker 1: was second to Oslin 21 minutes, 40 seconds, and then
- 1:00:30Speaker 1: Benson 21, 21. Uh, and then the third was Jack
- 1:00:34Speaker 1: Quinn at 2045. Tage Thompson was actually fourth on the
- 1:00:38Speaker 1: team tonight at just over 20 minutes. So when you
- 1:00:41Speaker 1: look at that, as you mentioned, Benson, you didn't get
- 1:00:43Speaker 1: on the score sheet tonight, almost had opportunities, drew a
- 1:00:45Speaker 1: couple of penalties, but, uh, the ice time continues to
- 1:00:48Speaker 1: rise for some of those younger players, Benson, uh, Oslin,
- 1:00:51Speaker 1: and even Jack Quinn, you know, really emerging, uh, here
- 1:00:53Speaker 1: for the Sabres four more shots on, on the night tonight.
- 1:00:56Speaker 1: So that's quickly, I guess the wrap up of the,
- 1:00:58Speaker 1: the player stats for Buffalo. Cause you've really got nothing
- 1:01:00Speaker 1: else to talk about here. Uh, one other positive, I
- 1:01:03Speaker 1: will say that just actually jumped out to me. Your
- 1:01:05Speaker 1: colleague was nine and two in the face off dot.
- 1:01:09Speaker 1: Like you, I know he's minus two on the score sheet.
- 1:01:13Speaker 1: You don't love that.
- 1:01:14Speaker 3: Only one shot. Don't really love that. But, uh, that's
- 1:01:19Speaker 3: a strong sign. If the guy is going to be
- 1:01:21Speaker 3: your number one center, that he can win face-offs for you. Um,
- 1:01:25Speaker 3: Tage ends up minus two with two giveaways. Um, Tage
- 1:01:29Speaker 3: has just got to be better. You know, he, he's
- 1:01:32Speaker 3: got to have a better game. He's got to be
- 1:01:33Speaker 3: more consistent. He's got to be a driver. Um, and
- 1:01:37Speaker 3: you know, you hope that this is just simply the
- 1:01:41Speaker 3: fact that you had, um, Cooley go up there and
- 1:01:46Speaker 3: play center and, tage is getting used to being back
- 1:01:48Speaker 3: on the wing maybe he could be more effective the
- 1:01:50Speaker 3: longer he plays wing and like they lock that threesome
- 1:01:54Speaker 3: in as line combos or as a combination there um
- 1:01:58Speaker 3: but yeah that that top line of doan thompson and
- 1:02:02Speaker 3: hope and uh colleagues gonna have to be better tonight
- 1:02:05Speaker 3: that are better than they were tonight.
- 1:02:08Speaker 1: Yep so jonathan final thoughts here in washington On Saturday,
- 1:02:12Speaker 1: then they go Sabres after dark, which is always fun.
- 1:02:14Speaker 1: We'll be back for a couple episodes. Again, no postgame
- 1:02:16Speaker 1: episodes until November, so it's going to be interesting there,
- 1:02:21Speaker 1: but we'll be back for a couple, obviously, episodes throughout
- 1:02:24Speaker 1: the next couple of weeks here. What do you want
- 1:02:27Speaker 1: to see? It's going to be, obviously, an emotional game
- 1:02:30Speaker 1: for Alex Tuck playing against Buffalo, even though it's not
- 1:02:33Speaker 1: in Buffalo, but it's still going to be weird to
- 1:02:36Speaker 1: see him in the Washington uniform going against Buffalo, and
- 1:02:39Speaker 1: I'm sure for those players, it'll be weird to see
- 1:02:41Speaker 1: him on the other side as well. And then obviously
- 1:02:43Speaker 1: going out West is not an easy, easy task with
- 1:02:46Speaker 1: how good young teams Anaheim, San Jose and LA is
- 1:02:49Speaker 1: kind of sputtering right now. But, uh, you know, what
- 1:02:51Speaker 1: are your final thoughts as we wrap it up?
- 1:02:52Speaker 3: This guy who's got Alex tuck in a fantasy hockey
- 1:02:57Speaker 3: league or two, it's been a bit painful to see
- 1:03:00Speaker 3: him not in a Sabres uniform, the way he is
- 1:03:03Speaker 3: performed thus far. Um, The Caps are no joke. They
- 1:03:09Speaker 3: are a team that can burn you offensively. I feel
- 1:03:13Speaker 3: like Ovi has kind of been a Sabres killer in
- 1:03:16Speaker 3: the past. I think he still has that feel, that touch,
- 1:03:18Speaker 3: that he could potentially do some damage, do some work
- 1:03:21Speaker 3: against them. So I hope that we see the team
- 1:03:26Speaker 3: get up for it. I want to see them come
- 1:03:27Speaker 3: out strong, and I want to see them get not
- 1:03:30Speaker 3: just the first goal, but the first two goals of
- 1:03:33Speaker 3: the game. That should be the Sabres goal. Put that
- 1:03:36Speaker 3: on the whiteboard in the room. Whatever you got to do,
- 1:03:39Speaker 3: make sure that it says score objectives, score first two
- 1:03:45Speaker 3: goals of the game. Because if they do that, I
- 1:03:48Speaker 3: don't think that anybody will be able to come back
- 1:03:51Speaker 3: and beat them. But I don't think that they can
- 1:03:54Speaker 3: expect to be the team constantly having to mount a comeback,
- 1:03:58Speaker 3: especially teams like against teams like Washington, especially against some
- 1:04:02Speaker 3: of the stiffer competition that they're going to see on
- 1:04:04Speaker 3: the road. It got to start better and capitalize on
- 1:04:09Speaker 3: those early opportunities. And for the love of God, get
- 1:04:12Speaker 3: a lead after 40 minutes.
- 1:04:14Speaker 1: That would be nice.
- 1:04:14Speaker 3: Even that.
- 1:04:15Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 1:04:15Speaker 3: I'll even take that. Even if it's two, nothing after the,
- 1:04:18Speaker 3: after 40, because you got one in one, we'll take that.
- 1:04:21Speaker 3: I don't know.
- 1:04:22Speaker 1: Absolutely. So we'll have to see on Saturday. And then again, they're,
- 1:04:25Speaker 1: they're on the West coast swing. So that's going to
- 1:04:26Speaker 1: wrap it up for today's live episode of the saber semantics,
