Transcript
- 0:00Coming up on this episode of The Spiro podcast.
- 0:04My philosophy on this is the editors didn't walk the house.
- 0:08They don't, they don't know the order necessarily of that house.
- 0:12You do as a photographer, so don't.
- 0:15Yeah, don't rely on your editors to know the proper order of that house or
- 0:20or where those rooms are in the house, what floor they're on, even.
- 0:23They have no idea.
- 0:25Welcome to the Spiro podcast.

- 1:20But I'm I'm getting ahead of myself.
- 1:23Let me introduce and welcome.
- 1:25Spiro cohost founder and owner, Todd Kivimaki.
- 1:29How are you doing, Todd?
- 1:30Oh, I'm great. How are.
- 1:32- How are you today? - You know, living the dream.
- 1:34It's a little warm in northwest Ohio.
- 1:36Kind of hot
- 1:38for this early in the summer. I.
- 1:41On the on the the staff meeting this morning.
- 1:45My zoom background for those of you listening and watching was
- 1:50it was Mt.
- 1:51Doom from Lord of the Rings.
- 1:53And I shared with the group.
- 1:54I said, I'm not saying it's hot out, but I did have two hobbits
- 1:58throw a ring into my backyard this week.
- 2:03That's good.
- 2:05That's the unfortunate thing about that Craigs.
- 2:07You had to explain it to some of us, so I'm kind of sorry.
- 2:11Not everybody's the nerds like I am. I just.
- 2:14I embraced that title long, long ago.
- 2:17I'm a nerd. I admit it. So.
- 2:18Hey, Craig, speaking of titles, now there's.
- 2:22There's a new one that you have. And this is
- 2:26ya’ll this is.
- 2:27This is a big deal.
- 2:28So, Craig, as many of you know him and love him.
- 2:32And Craig has a new honor,
- 2:37a new title that he has earned
- 2:39that honestly, it's a lifelong dream.
- 2:42Craig, do you want to share with our listeners?
- 2:45You sure know how to open.
- 2:46You know how to talk something up.
- 2:49Yeah.
- 2:50So I am now the the undisputed Dad Joke Champion
- 2:55of ten Acres campground in northwest Ohio.
- 2:58Hoo hoo hoo hoo hoo.
- 3:00I mean, come on ya’ll.
- 3:02Dad Joke Champion of Twin Oaks Campground.
- 3:05Twin Acres.
- 3:07Sorry, Twin Acres.
- 3:09Twin Acres the bigger one.
- 3:10Very prestigious award.
- 3:12Yes, Yes.
- 3:13Twin Acres is much bigger than Twin oaks that’s just two trees.
- 3:16That's like a ten.
- 3:17Don't want to confuse those two.
- 3:19Yeah, exactly.
- 3:20So. But in spirit, they had a dad joke off.
- 3:24at the campground on Father's Day, and Craig won the thing.
- 3:28Okay, so.
- 3:29So as not to make this sound like it's bigger than it actually was.
- 3:32There were only three of us dads
- 3:34that actually had the guts to get up there and share dad jokes.
- 3:36So all I had to do was make two of them crack.
- 3:39And I got the one to laugh at one.
- 3:41He just he totally broke.
- 3:43And the second one, it wasn't a particularly good one.
- 3:48There's no good dad jokes, but it was it was not one of my better ones. And
- 3:54he he kind of smirked
- 3:56and I headed up, handed him the microphone because I thought, okay,
- 3:59I didn't break them.
- 4:00And he kind of sparked a little bit.
- 4:03But then he started to chuckle because actually that that was a pretty good one.
- 4:06I concede he just gave up.
- 4:08I'm like, really?
- 4:11That's it?
- 4:12It was funny.
- 4:13If if we had tied, then the vote was going to go to the audience
- 4:17that was gathered there. It was bingo night.
- 4:19I sound like an old man, Todd.
- 4:21It was bingo night at the campground.
- 4:23And it, like, halfway point is when they did the dad joke championship.
- 4:28So, yeah, I just.
- 4:29I, you know, have not won.
- 4:32I would have had just as much of a good time because I just.
- 4:35It was just fun.
- 4:36So anyway.
- 4:36Yeah, that's what I love about you, Craig.
- 4:38You're always positive attitude, always happy, always looking to have a good time.
- 4:42So I do appreciate that.
- 4:44I try. It's not always.
- 4:45I have my days just like everybody else, right? You know, we
- 4:49we all have our days.
- 4:50But dad jokes,
- 4:53those are fun
- 4:54- it brings the smile to my face. - Craig, tell them the prize.
- 4:57What would they give you?
- 4:59Oh, well, if the picture didn't already go up,
- 5:03our editor, Justine, will put the picture up.
- 5:05I got this beautiful, beautiful champion trophy.
- 5:08Inflatable trophy.
- 5:11That’s so perfect
- 5:13It is. Oh, it's.
- 5:14I've got
- 5:16I'm going to hook that to the front of our camper so that everybody that goes
- 5:20by our camper can see this beautiful, very prestigious prize.
- 5:24Yeah, you better put a LED light shining down.
- 5:26That thing too. So at night
- 5:28It's. It's display.
- 5:30Okay, enough. The dad jokes.
- 5:32We have a podcast episode to get into here.
- 5:37I mean, I would love to sit and talk about this for an hour, Craig.
- 5:40and I have topics in mind, but I will concede and I, I, I did chuckle.
- 5:46It did bring a smile on my face when I heard you won.
- 5:48I'm I related to Craig you all through marriage.
- 5:51And it got back to me through my wife's parents that Craig had won.
- 5:55I was like, oh, this is beautiful.
- 5:57This is so.
- 5:58But it makes me happy.
- 5:59But also it gives me something to talk about on the podcast
- 6:02because I don't have a whole lot left in my brain. So
- 6:07yeah, but we can move on.
- 6:08But happy - We can. Let's, let's do.
- 6:10Yeah, it's a great honor.
- 6:12Yeah. Yeah. Great. Very prestigious prize.
- 6:14I'm mixing it up with Christmas story and.
- 6:16Yeah, but like lamp that anyway.
- 6:19Okay.
- 6:20All right so all right our topic this week.
- 6:24Let's let's change gears here.
- 6:26We're going to do part three. A three part series.
- 6:29Yes, part three.
- 6:30- We took a break last - This was requested, Craig.
- 6:33It was it was somebody commented and said,
- 6:36hey, I'd love to hear the rest of the photographers workflow.
- 6:39For the end of the day in the editing process, things like that.
- 6:43Basically, what does that the photographer do as part of their workflow
- 6:47after the shoot?
- 6:48So that's what we're going to cover today and there's a lot of good stuff.
- 6:52We've got a very refined workflow
- 6:55that has worked very well for us, so we're going to dig into that.
- 6:58But before we do, Todd, let's any updates on Spiro that you want to cover?
- 7:02Yeah, let me get some updates.
- 7:04I haven't given a few updates for a while,
- 7:05so let's take a minute here and I'm just going to read down my list.
- 7:09So outside of this list, the engineering team has done
- 7:13an outrageous amount of refinements inside this system.
- 7:17So these are all the little things.
- 7:19I'm not saying they're not important, but all the little things
- 7:21where you guys say, hey, could this do this
- 7:23or could this be that or this thing should be up a little higher.
- 7:26So we we
- 7:27we collect all that feedback and we have we're making a ton of refinements.
- 7:32Here are some more notable ones.
- 7:34So on a property website or marketing content,
- 7:37you can now toggle off the realtor logo and the equal housing logo.
- 7:43So some of your clients are not.
- 7:45Realtors don't want that on there.
- 7:46You can turn it off,
- 7:48go to the agent account and toggle off that they don't want that logo.
- 7:51You can also show their if they have a logo,
- 7:54you can show that logo, you can turn it on and off.
- 7:57And then one more thing you can show the company info.
- 8:00So Pete, you told me about this many, many moons ago, but now you can toggle on
- 8:04showing the company info on the property website that is in there
- 8:09on the calendar view.
- 8:11You can now create groups.
- 8:12So if you'd like to see your photographers in groups, you can name the group
- 8:16however you would like.
- 8:17So this is like a central group, a south group, an East and a west
- 8:21group of photographers.
- 8:22You can group them in there and quickly click that group
- 8:25to just see their calendars, which is kind of cool.
- 8:27and going to save you some time.
- 8:30A lot of refinements in that marketing tool kit.
- 8:33You can replace that logo of the company easier.
- 8:37Previously we use to just autofill
- 8:39the logo that was attached to the company, but you could change it now.
- 8:43You can change it, you can hide layers.
- 8:45Just some again, refinements that you guys have asked for. coupons.
- 8:49If you want it to never expire, you can just click, never
- 8:52expire as opposed to clicking a very far out calendar date.
- 8:57You can add more than five images in the slider.
- 9:00Many of you have asked for that.
- 9:01So I think you can put 20 in there,
- 9:03so you can click up to 20 and it will slide through them.
- 9:06prior to being delivered.
- 9:08So before you actually hit the deliver email button, we turn off all the pages.
- 9:13So that your clients can't view them.
- 9:14So if you don't click the deliver email button,
- 9:17if your client goes into their portal and they somehow
- 9:20find a way to get to a listing, we turn those pages off
- 9:24and that user just have a generic 404 error.
- 9:27It honestly confused a lot of the new users
- 9:29coming in because of that saying, Hey, my system's broke.
- 9:31Well, now there's a new message on that.
- 9:33It just says, Hey, this hasn't been delivered.
- 9:35And so we're a little bit more intelligent on how we we show it.
- 9:38So if your client sees that, they'll see that
- 9:40you're still working on the media and it hasn't been yet delivered.
- 9:43That's a great idea.
- 9:44So yeah, and then there's probably 30 more very small ones that we put in there
- 9:49that it's just going to function and work a little bit easier and better.
- 9:52We scaled and brought on a lot more server, so a lot of the gears
- 9:58you'll see are upgraded and improved.
- 10:02Excellent.
- 10:03We love the the suggestions and the ideas, so keep those coming.
- 10:08If somebody does have a suggestion or a request
- 10:11for updates to Spiro, how, how can they submit those, Todd?
- 10:15Yeah, so you can submit those.
- 10:18We have a dedicated system for this where you can go and get feedback
- 10:24when you're logged in to Spiro and up in the admin
- 10:27panel excuse me, in the upper right hand corner, there's a feedback button.
- 10:31If you click on that feedback button,
- 10:32it will take you to the portal where you can get feedback.
- 10:37You can see what other people have suggested.
- 10:40You can upvote and you can add and then you can see what has been done
- 10:43and what's coming.
- 10:44So just click that feedback button and that will take you to the portal
- 10:47where you can actually interact with users
- 10:50and vote and add new.
- 10:53Okay, good deal.
- 10:54And if you don't have a Spiro account yet, it's free to sign up.
- 10:57You don't get charged until you actually put a job through the system.
- 11:00So if you're curious and want to check it out, just go to our website.
- 11:03It's spiro.media and yeah get signed up.
- 11:07Lots of great knowledgebase articles and how tos and and all of that.
- 11:12Yeah Hey a huge shout out Also we talk about an editing team that we
- 11:16we use at our real estate media company and and just as transparent
- 11:20I am I'm a minority owner in this company it's called Creo there in Kosovo.
- 11:26Lavdim and Shend are the owners
- 11:29with myself in it, and we mentioned them quite a bit.
- 11:32Many of you have contacted them.
- 11:35They are currently on a waiting list.
- 11:37So if you are curious about editors they have filled up, which thank you
- 11:42for those of you that have looked at them and are using their editing,
- 11:47if you're still interested, please email them.
- 11:49Get on a waiting list and you can at least have a conversation
- 11:52and get a little more information of how they can streamline and help you scale.
- 11:57They fit right in the Spiro.
- 11:59You can use them in any editing system.
- 12:01You don't have to be a Spiro user.
- 12:02However, they understand in using and know Spiro, and we'll take the tasks that way
- 12:06and load them back into Spiro.
- 12:08So they are CreoLLC.net that's C R E O L L C, dot net.
- 12:14So if you're interested or thinking or seeing that you're scaling
- 12:18and want to have a team lined up
- 12:21now, it's better to email them than later.
- 12:24So, you know, just so that they can understand as they scale,
- 12:27they can bring you on because they are basically full with volume.
- 12:33Perfect.
- 12:33Awesome. All right.
- 12:35Well, thanks for those updates.
- 12:36now the good stuff.
- 12:37The good stuff. Yeah, let's dive into it. So.
- 12:39Okay, Part three of photographers, Streamlined workflows workflow.
- 12:44So in in episode two, which was two weeks ago,
- 12:48we had Colleen Kydd on from Three Palms being the last week.
- 12:51- loved that interview and talk with Coleen. - Fabulous.
- 12:53Yeah, she was awesome.
- 12:55So we did take a little bit of a break in the series, so we're back to it.
- 12:59Where we left off at the end of Part
- 13:02two was basically the end of a photographer's workday.
- 13:05So they've they've completed the the shoot.
- 13:08They've gotten back into their car.
- 13:09They have the media on the on the SD card.
- 13:13So what now?
- 13:15What's the rest of the workflow from here to say delivery, Todd?
- 13:20let's, let's dive into it.
- 13:23Let's do it.
- 13:23So you're driving home and you get home, you arrive,
- 13:27and now it's time to get all of that media
- 13:31organize, arranged and into the cloud.
- 13:34So this is assuming that you are using external editors.
- 13:38If you're not, When we talk about the editors,
- 13:40just note that that's the point that you do your editing
- 13:43and so you get home
- 13:46and you put your card in the computer.
- 13:50And if we didn't mention this, I want to mention it now, but we suggest
- 13:53that you create a new folder in your camera for each shoot
- 13:59So I believe almost every camera, if not every camera,
- 14:03you can trigger a new folder where
- 14:05the images that you take will go into.
- 14:09So we just get in the habit that as you show up,
- 14:12you know, you go to your your menu system, create a new folder
- 14:17and then all those images go to that folder
- 14:19What happens, Todd, if somebody forgets to create a new folder,
- 14:22what's an easy way to find the delineation between shoots?
- 14:26Yeah.
- 14:27So you've you've made life
- 14:28a little bit more difficult for yourself, but that's okay.
- 14:31All you have to do is you just have to show that date
- 14:35created column in your browser window.
- 14:40And the neat thing about that is as you go down
- 14:43the date created, it shows the time you're going to see.
- 14:46If you have a 1:00 shoot, you going to see 1:02,
- 14:481:02, 1:02, 1:02 1:03, 1:07, 1:07
- 14:51So you're going to see everything
- 14:52and then you're done taking photos at the house and say, 1:45
- 14:55while you're going to get to your next house at 3:15.
- 14:58And so you'll just see 1:45 than 3:15 and you'll see a big gap in time.
- 15:04And that's how you can understand that you have the next shoot
- 15:09just by looking at the time frame.
- 15:10I only ask because I may or may not have done that once or twice in my career.
- 15:19Yeah, well, I mean, looking back to one.
- 15:21So when I started shooting, I just did video and I was shooting on a Canon G01.
- 15:26And so we were shooting actually to tape.
- 15:30Yeah. Those that around.
- 15:31You're all parents. Yes, I am.
- 15:34And your parents basement those those things,
- 15:36those black boxes, the big and the small ones,
- 15:40they are they
- 15:43hold media on them.
- 15:44- I don't know if y'all knew that but - was it, was it the full,
- 15:49Was it the full VHS tape?
- 15:51No, I'm not that old. It
- 15:55I am.
- 15:57I am. I remember my dad's RCA camcorder, so,
- 16:00I mean, you had to have it on your shoulder.
- 16:02It was a full VHS tape.
- 16:04You popped in the side?
- 16:05That was straight Steven
- 16:06Spielberg up on the shoulder, just, you know, crouching low to get the angle.
- 16:10Yeah,
- 16:12I remember those, Craig.
- 16:13I didn't shoot on them,
- 16:15but what I used to do is I used to
- 16:17in between houses, I would
- 16:21in the back of my car, in my trunk, I'd write down the address of the house.
- 16:25Okay.
- 16:25And then I would, I would hit record to record video.
- 16:29And I, I'd toggled off a double punch up, basically.
- 16:32So I had a split second of video footage.
- 16:36And then that way, as I imported everything, I would look at the
- 16:40size of the clip
- 16:43and the size of the clip would tell me that it was,
- 16:46you know, 30 megabytes as opposed to 100 megabytes.
- 16:50And then I could see that.
- 16:52So you're just looking for a break time works great for you guys now
- 16:56to get that in there.
- 16:57And if you forget to do the folder, then it's really no big deal.
- 17:00Worst case, you're just going to look at the house, look at the images.
- 17:03But the goal is So I guess I should have started
- 17:06with the goal of what this important this podcast is.
- 17:10But the goal over the last 20 years of doing this is to make this process
- 17:17as quick, efficient
- 17:19and error free as possible.
- 17:22I mean, think about it.
- 17:24Are you getting paid sitting there importing your media?
- 17:29I mean, it's
- 17:29part of what you have to do, but if you do it in one minute
- 17:33or one hour, is a realtor ever going to know?
- 17:36I mean, when's the last time a realtor called and said, Hey,
- 17:39you imported way too fast for my job?
- 17:42Never.
- 17:43You know, So we want to save your time.
- 17:47We've done this a million different ways and we've done it well.
- 17:51I wish I we haven't done it a million times.
- 17:53We've done it a lot of times, hundreds of thousands of times.
- 17:56And the goal was to streamline it. So.
- 18:01So create the folder.
- 18:02If you don't have the folder, look
- 18:03for the date modified and look for your gap in time know.
- 18:08So at that point you've arrived home.
- 18:10And if you're a Spiro user
- 18:13and you've integrated Dropbox, you have
- 18:18a folder for every
- 18:20appointment waiting for you in your Dropbox folder.
- 18:24It's a very cool automated way of getting those folders.
- 18:27It is. It is. We used to create these.
- 18:29We used to manually right click, create the folder and we're strategic
- 18:34when we create this folder for you
- 18:35all is that we create the folder beginning with the date.
- 18:39So today is June 21st.
- 18:41So we would say 06.21.24
- 18:46and then we would put a space and then we say, If this is job one,
- 18:49we say it's a 01,
- 18:51the sequence number of the job, and then we have a space
- 18:54and then we have the address and the agent name in there.
- 18:57So the neat thing about that is if the agent ever calls back
- 19:02three months from now, three years from now,
- 19:05and you need to find their folders on Dropbox, all you have to do
- 19:09is search the agent's name and you would find all of their results.
- 19:14So that's why we put the agent name in there.
- 19:16If you need to find the address,
- 19:17the cool thing is just search the address that will show that exact one folder.
- 19:21So we do all these things for a reason because they all come together.
- 19:25We have people ask for things like, Oh, let's just put in the Dropbox name.
- 19:28That's an easy way to search.
- 19:30You of course can search and Spiro for the agent name,
- 19:32but sometimes you just need an agent like, Hey,
- 19:34do you have these assets from back in 21 and if you save it
- 19:37that long, I'm not suggesting you save files that long.
- 19:40I'm not saying this is what you do.
- 19:42I think you you save them for a year and then you delete them
- 19:45and you tell your clients you delete them after a year.
- 19:47Because the problem is, is when you do this for 20 years and people
- 19:50expect you to save stuff, you have oodles and oodles
- 19:54of storage space of hard drives and it becomes unmanageable.
- 19:59So you're back at those folders, Craig.
- 20:00And now you do this quite you do this, you,
- 20:02you are still actively shooting the field, so you come back to the folders.
- 20:06What do you do with the folders?
- 20:08Right.
- 20:08So I'll go into my Dropbox account and I will download those folders
- 20:11to my local machine, whether it's laptop, desktop, whatever, so that I have
- 20:15those folders as structured in Dropbox locally.
- 20:19I then take the files from my SD
- 20:22card, say it's, you know, the photos for job one.
- 20:25I will drag those into the photos subfolder of that job.
- 20:29One address.
- 20:31Same thing with any video files.
- 20:33Drag it from the SD card and just transfer the files that way.
- 20:37That way there in the Dropbox folder that's on my local machine.
- 20:40They're not uploaded back to Dropbox yet, but that's how then we can get transfer
- 20:46into the folder and start our organizing and culling process
- 20:49and renaming those files for how Spiro
- 20:52likes to, you know, organize everything.
- 20:55Yeah.
- 20:55And we have strategically not taken them online yet.
- 21:01You're not ready to take them online yet.
- 21:03There's still some organizing, some renaming that you need to do
- 21:07and some other things.
- 21:08So if you start to take them online or if you say, Hey Todd,
- 21:11I use the Dropbox app, don't let it sync yet.
- 21:14There's no reason to let it sync.
- 21:16It's just going to confuse itself.
- 21:17It might create duplicates.
- 21:19We have not historically had good success with the app,
- 21:23and so we just recommend that our our photographers
- 21:27go to the Dropbox folder, click the five jobs for today
- 21:32and just drag those down to their desktop that will download them from Dropbox.
- 21:36And then you have your working folders right there right now.
- 21:40One thing you mentioned, Craig,
- 21:41so you said you take the photos into the photos folder.
- 21:44So in your Dropbox folder are there subfolders inside of that
- 21:49Correct.
- 21:49Yeah.
- 21:50So you have what we call our raw folders.
- 21:53So the raw photos, you know, we shoot five,
- 21:57you know, five, five exposures, we shoot HDR.
- 22:00So I've got five different exposures
- 22:03for every shot that I've taken and yeah, I drag those into a raw photos folder,
- 22:09I take my video clips, drag those into the raw video clips folder.
- 22:14We have an edited photos folder and edited video folder in the
- 22:20you know, for any other services
- 22:21we have, like say our agent home highlight ads or whatever we create them
- 22:26manually create those folders since they're not as usual of of add ons
- 22:32but yeah a
- 22:33subfolder for basically each type of raw media that you have.
- 22:37Awesome.
- 22:37And those subfolders will automatically get created for
- 22:42you based on your dropbox setup inside of Spiro.
- 22:45Okay, so when you integrate inside of your Dropbox,
- 22:48you just tell us what you want those folders to be named.
- 22:51If you're curious what our structure is, just search the knowledge based article.
- 22:55I share a ton of information about what we do at our real estate
- 22:59media company in there, so we do five folders like Craig mentioned,
- 23:03unedited photo and video.
- 23:05That's two folders.
- 23:06The third folder is what we call other media, and we'll skip back to that
- 23:10and we'll explain that in a second because that does have a purpose.
- 23:13And then we have edited photos and video,
- 23:16and some of those folders are
- 23:18what we call static folders, which means you just drop them in there.
- 23:22Static being that Spiro won't do anything with them as opposed to
- 23:27what we call auto import folders, which means Spiro will scan that folder.
- 23:33And if it sees media in, it will take that media, upload it
- 23:38to your property website automatically for you.
- 23:42So one thing I want to touch on
- 23:44is the other media folder and why this is important.
- 23:48So typically
- 23:51a job at a job you might have some media that you'll take,
- 23:56but you don't know if the client will want it.
- 24:00These are just safekeeping.
- 24:01So, Craig, I'm trying to think of some examples right now.
- 24:04What are some shots that you take for that you put in the other media folder?
- 24:08Yeah. So let's look at drone, for example.
- 24:10You know, say our basic drone package,
- 24:12we we deliver four photos, four aerial photos to the client,
- 24:17but the photographer is actually going to shoot
- 24:19five, maybe six photos.
- 24:23But we're not going to necessarily
- 24:24we're not going to deliver all five or six of those.
- 24:27We're only delivering four because that's what the bundle includes.
- 24:30But that extra aerial shot or two,
- 24:34that maybe is a different angle that the client might want.
- 24:38We put that into the other folder.
- 24:40So if they come back and say, Hey, do you happen to have a shot from this angle,
- 24:45we might have that and then we can easily just pull that up,
- 24:48edit it and deliver it.
- 24:50Yeah, that's I love that. So. Craig What? So
- 24:54we don't edit?
- 24:56Why don't we have our editors edit what's in the other media folder.
- 25:00Well it costs you right.
- 25:02And every photo they're there editing is
- 25:07that's coming out of your your bottom line
- 25:09and if you don't know if the client wants it
- 25:11or if you don't know the client's going to buy it from you, there's
- 25:14no reason to have them edited it, to have them edited.
- 25:18So
- 25:19I have a funny quick and a
- 25:21anecdotal story of dumb things I've done in the past.
- 25:25Oh, I love this segment we need to do.
- 25:28Here we go.
- 25:28We should we should make that a segment dumb things we've done before.
- 25:32Learn, learn from our mistakes.
- 25:34Those of you that have done any portrait photography, you're
- 25:37just going to shake your head and laugh and like, you idiot.
- 25:39So I know
- 25:41I did learn the lesson very quickly.
- 25:44So I don't do a ton of portraits, but now and then
- 25:48I will shoot some portraits of family photos, senior photos,
- 25:52some realtor headshots.
- 25:54When I first started doing portraits.
- 25:57Todd, you're going to laugh your head off.
- 25:59Any good photo?
- 26:00I thought would be interesting to the to the client.
- 26:05I would edit every photo and upload it to the online gallery.
- 26:11You know, I'd watermark everything and then they would pick which ones. And
- 26:16and that after I think it was after the second job, I'm like, wait a minute.
- 26:20They only picked four photos and I edited
- 26:23say ten, and I spent a lot of time on editing those extra.
- 26:27So that was a waste of my time.
- 26:29What in the heck am I doing?
- 26:32So yeah, yeah.
- 26:33You don't want to edit every photo.
- 26:36Yeah.
- 26:36And that's a, that's a good simple example of, of that
- 26:40I have a story very similar, except it ended a little worse.
- 26:44It wasn't just my time.
- 26:45I had a so I shot weddings for ten years, you know, probably ten or 15.
- 26:51Yes. Thank you.
- 26:53And I had a couple
- 26:56that I did their engagement session
- 26:59and I spent a ton of time with them, more than normal.
- 27:03And, you know, we went to the college campus where they're at.
- 27:06Anyways, long story short, I delivered a lot of images to them,
- 27:10way more than I should have ever.
- 27:12So it took me way longer to edit them.
- 27:14But also
- 27:17I got bad feedback from the
- 27:19soon to be Bride about the images.
- 27:22And I was a little.
- 27:24I mean, any time someone doesn't like your work, you're,
- 27:27you know, I took pride and I thought I delivered a nice set.
- 27:30well, what came back is that she just didn't like the way
- 27:34she looked in some of the images, and she was self-conscious about it.
- 27:39Yeah. And she.
- 27:40She had a set that she liked, and she's good with, you know, a third of the images
- 27:45just giving her all those options made her analyze it that much more.
- 27:50Made her be, you know, analyze herself the way she looks.
- 27:54And so I learned very quickly that you don't want to give too much.
- 27:59That same theory proves true with your real estate agents.
- 28:03I can't tell you how many times
- 28:04we've delivered too many photos, and the agent comes back with a complaint.
- 28:08We had all of the right angles.
- 28:11We just gave them angles that they didn't need,
- 28:14and they wanted to like those angles as much as they like the other ones.
- 28:18And that is part of the transition to becoming a good real estate photographer.
- 28:23Is understanding what not to give them, what to give.
- 28:26there's a psychology element to photography
- 28:30that when I first got into it, I didn't even think about
- 28:33one of my early mentors who she did weddings and portraits and all of that.
- 28:38She she looked me straight in the eye.
- 28:39She said, Craig, portrait photography.
- 28:41And actually it goes beyond portrait photography.
- 28:45But this specifically is what we were talking about, she said, is
- 28:48as much counseling and psychology as it is the art of photography.
- 28:52I'm like, What?
- 28:53And it was that exact example you just gave, Todd, is people
- 28:56are self-conscious of themselves and they'll start to nitpick.
- 28:59And there's nothing.
- 29:00Usually if you know your stuff, it's not a reflection of your actual photography
- 29:04or your lighting or your composure or, you know, any of that.
- 29:09It's just people are self-conscious and they they start over analyzing.
- 29:14But it's yeah, like you said, it's the same for real estate.
- 29:17You give too many options
- 29:19that not every shot is going to be your best shot.
- 29:22There's angles I take that are not the best angles
- 29:25and I take those out when I get home from my shoots for my
- 29:29for my shoot day because I can see, okay, it's not a bad picture,
- 29:33but it's not the best picture.
- 29:34I'm not even going to show that to them
- 29:37because we only want them to see the best work that
- 29:41that we have to deliver so that they continue to use us.
- 29:45It's all ties back to business.
- 29:47MM You know, we're, we're talking a little bit about the creative element, but
- 29:53you got to look at this as how does this impact your business?
- 29:56That's why we're talking to workflow and efficiency.
- 29:59We want to make you efficient and give you a good workflow
- 30:02so that your bottom line is the best that it can be.
- 30:05Yeah, exactly.
- 30:06Good advice, Craig. Good advice.
- 30:08So rewinding back a few to talking about
- 30:12the other media folder,
- 30:15one, if you don't know that your client wants those angles
- 30:18and we're not suggesting you use that folder every time there's
- 30:22many shoots that our photographers don't put anything in the other media
- 30:26So if you think, Oh great, I'm
- 30:27just going to put the 15 shots I didn’t want for every shoot in there.
- 30:30No, please don't do that. You are wasting time.
- 30:33It's just start.
- 30:34Yeah, yeah. And space.
- 30:36If you just started, that's okay.
- 30:38But make it a goal by day 90 that you don't put anything in that folder
- 30:42unless you're like, Oh, this.
- 30:44Is this a nice master closet?
- 30:47And I typically don't take closets, but it's really big.
- 30:51I'm just going to take it. I'll put in other media.
- 30:53I'm not going to have the editors edit it. If they call, they'll have it.
- 30:57The third reason why
- 30:58you want the other media folder, if you have photographers
- 31:01or even if you're a solo shooter, is if your client calls
- 31:05as the day of delivery, which is the next day,
- 31:09and you or they are on the road, but they have the angle that you want
- 31:15sitting back on their SD card,
- 31:18This is CF card because I'm old,
- 31:22that I'm holding up a CF card to all of you that are listening.
- 31:26If the client wants that image and it's sitting on a memory
- 31:30card on a desk and it's not in the cloud,
- 31:34you're not going to get it to them on time because you
- 31:37or your photographers out on the road, which is good, you're making money,
- 31:41But you need to have that thing in the cloud
- 31:44so that you can grab it and it's accessible the day of delivery.
- 31:49So lots of mistakes
- 31:50we've made along the way to create the other folder.
- 31:54If I would just steal it, just steal that, do it.
- 31:58If you're scaling on a team, do the other media folder.
- 32:01That's where your photographers
- 32:03will upload any media that they think the client might want.
- 32:06But again, don't let that be a crutch of like, I'm
- 32:08just going to throw all this crap in there because you want me to do it.
- 32:12Okay, cool.
- 32:12So we have taken all of the media and and taken it drag and drop
- 32:17from the appropriate folder or from our SD card to the appropriate folder.
- 32:22And now we have all the media organized
- 32:27into the correct folder, but it's not completely organized.
- 32:30Right. Craig, What do we do next? - Right. Yeah.
- 32:32So what, what we do next is we then actually organize each,
- 32:37each photo in the folder because we want to deliver photos
- 32:40in a particular order that most realtors like.
- 32:43We want to front load the best spaces.
- 32:45So the main living area, the kitchen, the master bedroom,
- 32:48if it's on the main floor, you know, and save save rooms
- 32:51like the half bath and the laundry room for last on that floor.
- 32:55So you might have to shoot out of order.
- 32:57Well, then you need to organize those photos
- 33:00into the correct order that you want to deliver those in.
- 33:04And so you're really spit it out, Craig.
- 33:08Craig.
- 33:08Rearranging the photos in the correct order
- 33:11and also deleting out bad photos that you just you don't want to save.
- 33:14You don't want to deliver.
- 33:16I mean, any, any full, any photos that you want
- 33:19to put into that other folder, taking those out and moving those as well,
- 33:22but make sure you get them in a good deliverable order to your client.
- 33:27Yeah, I cannot stress to you guys
- 33:30how important it is to organize at this point.
- 33:33So I know some of you say I do it in QC.
- 33:35I have my editors do it or I don't do it at all.
- 33:38I hear some of you say that and I see some of you.
- 33:41When you send me a question, I see your delivery page
- 33:44and like it's a glaring issue to me
- 33:47and you need to organize your images
- 33:51because you have created art that you're giving.
- 33:54You're telling the story of the home and you need to give it
- 33:58in the appropriate order to the realtor.
- 34:01So if you're out there saying, Oh, my realtors don't care, I give it
- 34:04whatever order and they'll do whatever they want with it.
- 34:06I can tell you I am confident your you have lost clients because of that.
- 34:10You might have some clients that put up with it.
- 34:13I'm not saying that, but I am saying you will lose clients
- 34:17if you make them do your work.
- 34:21You were there.
- 34:22You know what the order should be?
- 34:23I would never risk not giving it in a walk in an appropriate order,
- 34:28because they're going to look at that and you're going to send them a third
- 34:32bedroom first or as the second shot or the first shot inside the house.
- 34:36So you shoot the exterior of the house and you show all exterior front and back
- 34:41and then you show say you went upstairs
- 34:43because the house wasn't ready and you shot the third bedroom.
- 34:48And the first thing the viewer sees once they get in from outside
- 34:51is the third bedroom.
- 34:52I can tell you that is jarring to an agent.
- 34:55They're going to want to see the front of the house.
- 34:57Then they want to see
- 34:58what's inside the front door and show me the main living areas.
- 35:02So I just I'll tell you from experience and this is a small room,
- 35:06I tell you what I know, because I've seen it.
- 35:08Please put your images in order.
- 35:11that's specific feedback.
- 35:13I've heard from our clients
- 35:14that they appreciate that we order things the way we do so that they don't have to.
- 35:19They've got too many other important things to take care of them
- 35:22or their admin to reorder photos.
- 35:27Let's make ourselves There's a phrase you use, Todd.
- 35:30Let's make ourselves sticky.
- 35:32You know, if we can provide that quick service for them,
- 35:36it's just that next extra level of service to them that they love and appreciate.
- 35:39And they they've specifically mentioned
- 35:43that service that we provide of ordering the photos for them.
- 35:47Yeah.
- 35:48How easy is it such a freebie?
- 35:49Like, it's so easy.
- 35:50It's most of the time you have it done correctly because you can walk the house
- 35:54correctly
- 35:55I understand you can. I shot 10,000 houses.
- 35:58I know you can't always walk a house correctly
- 36:00But you just.
- 36:01You can do it afterwards.
- 36:02We're going to talk about that process in a second.
- 36:04I do want to pause very briefly to talk about the order.
- 36:08So your pricing side, what order do you shoot in?
- 36:10Okay. I understand.
- 36:12I see the value of correctly ordering What what order do you take?
- 36:15So Craig gave you a little hint.
- 36:17We shoot the front of the house and then we shoot the house
- 36:20in what we call walking order.
- 36:22And we train to this some and there are some exceptions.
- 36:25So front of the house moving in then we take the entry to the house.
- 36:29So there's I have a foyer does it have an entry
- 36:32at that point you have to decide if straight ahead
- 36:36there's a two story family room that has windows
- 36:40two stories, beautiful, entertaining area that leads into an open kitchen
- 36:44or there's an okay study to your left
- 36:50you need to take get to the meat and potatoes.
- 36:53That's a phrase we use here at Wow.
- 36:55Get to the meat and potatoes.
- 36:56Give us give us the main course of the meal.
- 37:00So shoot the entry because that's important,
- 37:03because you have to walk in the front door.
- 37:05What's inside that front door?
- 37:07Don't show the two story family room next.
- 37:09You've got to show where you're getting into the house at
- 37:11because your brain got to connect it from that entryway.
- 37:14The user or the viewer excuse me can see that.
- 37:18Oh, down there. I see. Oh, that's the family room.
- 37:20If it's beautiful, show it next and then go straight to the family room,
- 37:25come back left to the kitchen and show the main living areas.
- 37:30At that point, before you go upstairs, you can show that den
- 37:34in the front of the house. That's not so great.
- 37:37Yeah.
- 37:37Now you're now on the way to the family room.
- 37:40You pass the half bathroom and then the basement is to the left.
- 37:45Okay, This is, not all house, all right? It's pretty standard.
- 37:47So to the right is a half bath.
- 37:49To the left is basement stairs.
- 37:51When do I show the basement or when do I show the laundry room?
- 37:54We put those suckers at the end before we go outside.
- 37:58They're half bath, you know,
- 38:01are small.
- 38:03They're just.
- 38:04And they're more of a just a I can't think of a term, Craig.
- 38:08My brain. I mean, they're just an afterthought.
- 38:10There it goes.
- 38:11Perfect.
- 38:11All right, Justine, our editor, just let me struggle here and stutter
- 38:14for a little bit.
- 38:15Don't cut out the stutter so everybody can see this is real ya’ll
- 38:21Half baths are an afterthought.
- 38:23Okay.
- 38:24Let me try to pull myself together and put a phrase out.
- 38:28One at a time.
- 38:29After you've shot the entry way,
- 38:32the two story family room, the kitchen, shoot the den, go upstairs,
- 38:37shoot the master, the big bedroom first with the bath,
- 38:40and then go to the sub bedrooms and any bathroom
- 38:43After that, you'll want to go downstairs if there is one.
- 38:46If there's not a downstairs,
- 38:47that's when you can show your laundry room and your bathroom.
- 38:50And then when you go outside to the backyard,
- 38:53show your best angle first.
- 38:56It's typically you're walking to the back of the yard
- 38:58and you're shooting up at the house so that people can see the house.
- 39:02Sometimes I see y'all arrange it like you're standing the deck
- 39:05or the patio and you'll show the view, which might even be beautiful.
- 39:09But that throws my brain off because what are we selling?
- 39:13We're selling a house that has a great view.
- 39:16We're not selling a view that, by the way, has the house
- 39:20Yeah.
- 39:20So show that house first and then you can flip for your second
- 39:23backyard shot if you want a shot of the view.
- 39:27The key to this is putting
- 39:28yourself in the place of the realtor and being a salesperson with them.
- 39:32Yes. You're a photographer.
- 39:34Yes, you're a videographer, but you are part of marketing and sales team
- 39:38and you're helping them sell this house.
- 39:40So take the shots and put them in the order
- 39:42that's going to help sell the house.
- 39:45And show those those key shots.
- 39:49Yeah.
- 39:49A phrase that we use here at Wow Ryan, our head trainer came up with a new guy.
- 39:53Steal it, too.
- 39:54If it works for your team, we always ask our photographers
- 39:57in every photo, every video clip, What are you selling?
- 40:01And does it look good?
- 40:05to have them as your team is learning
- 40:09and you see a photo and you're doing critique
- 40:11with them and feedback and you see a photo that you want take ask them
- 40:15what are you selling and doesn't look good.
- 40:18And they'll go, Hmm, well, I kind of just took half of that toilet there
- 40:21because it was a really small bathroom in Oh yeah, I'm selling a toilet.
- 40:25Like, that's not very you know, it's not great.
- 40:28So we find that that ties kind of connects some of the dots for photographers,
- 40:33especially as our learning is to always think about
- 40:35what are you selling and does it look good? Right.
- 40:39Okay, cool.
- 40:40So let me jump forward again because,
- 40:43you know, when we
- 40:44when we say this out loud, Craig, there's 20 years of efficiency in here learning.
- 40:48So I didn't yeah, I thought this was going to be a quick one, honestly, today.
- 40:51And there's so much in here that we do these things for a reason.
- 40:56So organizing so many of you are going to say, Todd,
- 40:58I don't like to organize before editing because I have five brackets
- 41:04and I've got all those images.
- 41:08How do we that's a pain to drag around.
- 41:10I got to reorganize them.
- 41:12How do I even do that?
- 41:14Craig, I think we've made it pretty simple.
- 41:16Are you referring to the software we use to help us organize those things?
- 41:20Yes. Just, just the, the way how we org Yeah, how we see them.
- 41:23Five at a time and how we drag and drop them.
- 41:26So we actually just recently made a change.
- 41:29We've been using Adobe Bridge
- 41:31for years and years and years to help organize our photos
- 41:35so that we can, we can highlight those five exposures
- 41:38and just drag the batch that that batch of five wherever we need to.
- 41:41And it made it pretty quick.
- 41:43But we were having challenges with, with bridge for a couple of reasons.
- 41:48One of them tied to the way we do we shoot video now I won't get into those
- 41:52those nitty gritty but we're using a free program
- 41:55that actually one of our photographers found.
- 41:59It's called XnView MP And you know what?
- 42:04I'll put a I'll put a link to that software
- 42:07in the show notes if you're watching on YouTube.
- 42:10Well, actually both both the podcast, audio podcast and the YouTube,
- 42:15but it's
- 42:16freeware and it's been working fantastic for us.
- 42:19There's there's one small little, little challenge.
- 42:23It's not a big deal and again,
- 42:25not going to get in the details, but A, it's free and B, it works.
- 42:29So yeah, yeah.
- 42:31So the biggest thing here is that so we switch to this XnView MP for a reason
- 42:36because our video clips weren’t showing a preview.
- 42:41if you're going to organize media, you have to see it.
- 42:43You don't want to open up every clip.
- 42:45So in bridge it won't show a preview.
- 42:48The biggest thing here is if you use bridge or if you use
- 42:51any other program, you need to be able to see your bracketed images
- 42:56all in one row.
- 42:58So if you shoot five images, you need the scale of the window
- 43:03that shows the thumbnails, the preview to be a row of five across, right?
- 43:10So and in these programs you can scale the width of the window,
- 43:15but you can also scale the size of the thumbnail
- 43:18so that you can have five across.
- 43:21If you shoot three brackets, put three across, if you shoot
- 43:24seven brackets, put seven across
- 43:27the neat thing about that is now
- 43:30you can look through your images and your first image
- 43:34is typically your middle bracket, so you can view it from there.
- 43:37And then if you need to drag the order, you're going to click on the first image
- 43:42shift, click, hold the shift key and click on the last image.
- 43:46You've selected five images or one bracketed set.
- 43:50Drag that to where you want it, drop it,
- 43:54and you have just organized your media.
- 43:58Craig, a question
- 43:59I get asked all the time is why don't you just have the editors,
- 44:03your VA, organize after this is done
- 44:07right
- 44:08So let's do that.
- 44:09Yeah.
- 44:09My philosophy on this is the editors didn't walk the house.
- 44:13They don't, they don't know the order necessarily of that house.
- 44:17You do as a photographer, so don't.
- 44:20Yeah, don't rely on your editors to know the proper order of that house or
- 44:25or where those rooms are in the house, what floor they're on, even.
- 44:28They have no idea.
- 44:30Yeah.
- 44:31I don't know if you all been, you know, your editors probably in Vietnam,
- 44:36maybe India, maybe the Philippines.
- 44:40And we could not run our business without our team offshore.
- 44:44They are an intricate part of our business
- 44:46However, we
- 44:47know what they're really good at and what we're good at.
- 44:50And real estate in those areas is not like real estate over here.
- 44:55I mean, I always give a quick funny example.
- 44:56We have our virtual stager, Jess, our head of ops one day said
- 45:00was going back and forth on stage in a room and she said,
- 45:04Hey, can you just put a runner, you know, put a runner up by the front door?
- 45:08She wanted a rug there, what we call it a runner,
- 45:12and we get the photo back.
- 45:15Was it someone jogging.
- 45:17Literally somebody is jogging by the front door.
- 45:21That's awesome.
- 45:23Yeah. So?
- 45:24So and so.
- 45:25Yeah, we still laughed about that.
- 45:27But that is a very good, just funny example as to why
- 45:31let your offshore team, your VA’s, do what they're good at
- 45:34and you were in the house, You know what
- 45:37you're selling, just finish off the job and put it in order.
- 45:40So it's super simple.
- 45:42So from there you have drag
- 45:45and drop everything in the appropriate order
- 45:49and now you need to just do
- 45:52a quick re numbering of all the images. Yep.
- 45:55And you need to renumber them because you just spent time putting them in order
- 45:59and let's give them to your editor
- 46:02and 001 through 425.
- 46:07So start it sequence number one through the end.
- 46:11It's a quick batch rename in bridge and also the XnView MP.
- 46:16I'm saying that wrong, but then you show.
- 46:18XnView MP
- 46:20XnView MP
- 46:22Thank you XnView MP for making that program by the way,
- 46:25and letting it be free. Because it is very helpful.
- 46:27They are not sponsoring this video.
- 46:29We have no ties to them.
- 46:31It's just a program we found that works.
- 46:34Yeah, and we have no affiliate code because they're free.
- 46:37Yeah,
- 46:39right.
- 46:39We just use them. So.
- 46:42Okay, so you've renumbered your images.
- 46:44You do the same for your video clips.
- 46:47And what do we do now, Craig?
- 46:49We're going to bring this thing home.
- 46:50Yeah. So it's easy.
- 46:52You take that, that Dropbox folder that you downloaded to your local machine
- 46:56that you've now just moved everything to and organized and renamed, drag
- 47:01that folder back into Dropbox
- 47:04Boom.
- 47:06And you walk away from that sucker.
- 47:09No, don't walk away.
- 47:11Don't walk away.
- 47:12All right.
- 47:13Well, I mean, you can walk away temporarily, but you must come back
- 47:18and make sure that every file actually did
- 47:22re upload to Dropbox.
- 47:25You don't want to, you know, the next morning find out that,
- 47:28oh, there was a couple of upload errors and there were a few files missing
- 47:33and so the editors couldn't finish the entire set.
- 47:36Make sure to verify that all of your files
- 47:39did in fact upload back to Dropbox.
- 47:43Yeah.
- 47:43Now you can make it real if you have gigabit upload speed.
- 47:48go ahead and rub it in our face, Craig.
- 47:51I just uploaded upgraded to fiber.
- 47:54I've got gigabit upload now.
- 47:56No joke, Todd.
- 47:57This I mean, this has changed my life.
- 48:00I can do an average size shoot
- 48:03and have it uploaded within about a minute and a half.
- 48:06Oh, I'm so jealous.
- 48:08It has changed.
- 48:09It revolutionized my evenings. Now
- 48:13I can actually just sit there, watch it, upload.
- 48:16Okay. Everything uploaded green checkmarks.
- 48:19I'm good to go. I'm going to eat dinner.
- 48:21I love it. time is money.
- 48:23If you have fiber and you can get fiber please get it
- 48:27it's worth it
- 48:28Oh, we live in the middle of cornfields so that gigabit would cost us.
- 48:32I had a price. It would cost us two grand a month.
- 48:35- Are you kidding me? - I'm not.
- 48:36Because they'd have to bring the fiber down the pole.
- 48:38Yeah. To two grand a month for a three year commitment.
- 48:41So, yeah, don't. Don't do that.
- 48:43No, don't do that.
- 48:45and so you walk away after you're done.
- 48:46So a couple of tips.
- 48:47Two things.
- 48:47One, make sure your computer doesn't go to sleep.
- 48:51Yes, you can let your monitor turn off, but your power settings don't
- 48:54let the computer go to sleep.
- 48:56Number two, please, Hardwire, I know you're going to say
- 48:59you're going to give me some jargon about wifi and B and G
- 49:03and whatever letter they're up to now and how it's fast.
- 49:05It's not just hardwire the darn thing.
- 49:08It's a lot more reliable.
- 49:09You don't have drop out and it's going to work a lot better.
- 49:13Preach.
- 49:14Amen. Hallelujah.
- 49:16Yeah, cool.
- 49:16Thing is, now, if you've set up task and Spiro
- 49:20automatically your editors know about this job.
- 49:23Automatically your editors were shared The Dropbox folder.
- 49:27Automatically your editors can edit, put their completed
- 49:30media back in the completed auto import folders.
- 49:35You wake up the next day, your VA wakes up, the next day
- 49:39they see that editing has been marked as done by your editors.
- 49:42They have a QC task.
- 49:44They quickly go to the property website editor, they scan it for any errors.
- 49:50If there's something they want to correct, they can quickly download
- 49:53from that page.
- 49:54a little Dodge/Burn in Photoshop, Lightroom.
- 49:58Whatever you use,
- 49:59you can upload that image with the same file name to the property
- 50:03website editor and Spiro Spiro knows that you want to replace it,
- 50:07so it gets rid of the old image, puts it in the same spot
- 50:11where you had the uncorrected image, puts the corrected image.
- 50:14There, boom, You scroll to the bottom, you're all done.
- 50:17You go up, hit, deliver, and you are done with that job.
- 50:22You're on your way to doing more productive things with your day
- 50:25than organizing, uploading and QC.
- 50:28All right.
- 50:29So there it is.
- 50:30The photographers streamlined workflow after the shoot is done,
- 50:34after you've gotten back to your car, there's a lot packed in there.
- 50:38You might have more questions.
