Latest / Cardinal Territory: A St. Louis Cardinals Podcast / One week into the season: Are there concerns over the Cardinals bullpen?
Transcript
- 0:05Speaker 1: The Saint Louis Cardinals dropped to their series opener to
- 0:07Speaker 1: the Boston Red Sox by a score of thirteen to
- 0:10Speaker 1: nine on Friday afternoon, a beautiful day at Fenway Park
- 0:13Speaker 1: for Boston's home opener. I will add but have no
- 0:16Speaker 1: fear Cardinals fans. Two games remain in the series. The
- 0:18Speaker 1: bad news is that's very much weather permitting, and the
- 0:21Speaker 1: forecast for this weekend does not look great, so we'll
- 0:24Speaker 1: keep you posted. Yesterday's game was not necessarily well pitched
- 0:28Speaker 1: really by either team, now that I'm thinking about it,
- 0:30Speaker 1: but Saint Louis in particular allowed thirteen runs on sixteen hits,
- 0:34Speaker 1: walked eight batters. Not what you want. On the flip side,
- 0:37Speaker 1: I do remain encouraged by the offense, which has recorded
- 0:40Speaker 1: at least ten hits in all seven of their games,
- 0:42Speaker 1: and they've banged out fifty one total runs. So yesterday
- 0:46Speaker 1: not good for the arms, continues to be encouraging for
- 0:49Speaker 1: the bats. Welcome back to Cardinal Territory. I'm Katie, will
- 0:52Speaker 1: hitting you with a quick one today. A couple of
- 0:54Speaker 1: news updates and a couple of things to address. Let's
- 0:56Speaker 1: get right into it, starting with our scouting report presented
- 0:59Speaker 1: by Fanduels Sports Network. Prior to a Friday's game against
- 1:04Speaker 1: the Red Sox, the Cardinals placed infielder Nolan Gorman on
- 1:08Speaker 1: the ten day injured list with the right hamstring strain
- 1:11Speaker 1: retroactive two April. Second Thomas a jac was recalled from
- 1:15Speaker 1: Memphis as the corresponding move. So bad news first, obviously
- 1:19Speaker 1: that Nolan Gorman is hurt. The good news in this
- 1:21Speaker 1: situation is that both he and the Cardinals think this
- 1:24Speaker 1: is a very minor stint. We talked to Nolan Gorman yesterday.
- 1:28Speaker 1: He sustained this ham string strain on Tuesday night and
- 1:31Speaker 1: extra innings in that loss to the Angels, running from
- 1:33Speaker 1: first to second. You can kind of see him on
- 1:35Speaker 1: the replay grab at his hamstring immediately when he takes
- 1:38Speaker 1: off for second base. He was down unavailable on Wednesday
- 1:42Speaker 1: at Cardinals wanted to give him a day to see
- 1:43Speaker 1: if it would recover. Then you have the team off
- 1:45Speaker 1: day on Thursday. So really it was about forty eight
- 1:48Speaker 1: hours of recovery time. Got better, but still not enough
- 1:52Speaker 1: where he could play. Cardinals did not want to be
- 1:54Speaker 1: down four five days without a player. That's just too
- 1:58Speaker 1: long of a time to be without a guy, especially
- 2:00Speaker 1: an infielder. Cardinals, I don't know if you guys know
- 2:02Speaker 1: this don't really have a lot of those on their roster.
- 2:05Speaker 1: They certainly don't have a backup shortstop. We haven't talked
- 2:07Speaker 1: about that at all. So they place Nolan Gorman on
- 2:10Speaker 1: the injured list. He is eligible to come back that
- 2:12Speaker 1: first series of the next home stand against the Philadelphia Phillies.
- 2:16Speaker 1: Doesn't sound like he'll be out super long, so dodge
- 2:21Speaker 1: de bullet there. Obviously, you don't like to see this
- 2:23Speaker 1: for Gorman, who has kind of had a weird start
- 2:26Speaker 1: to the year. Right. He came in over the offseason
- 2:28Speaker 1: as someone that president at Baseball Operations John Mozaylock was
- 2:31Speaker 1: stressing like playing time, playing time, playing time, and he's
- 2:34Speaker 1: been pretty much relegated to a bench role to start
- 2:37Speaker 1: the year. Very small sample size. He has looked good though.
- 2:40Speaker 1: He's had nine played appearances, four hits, a homer, and
- 2:43Speaker 1: a walk. The swing looks good, the approach looks good.
- 2:47Speaker 1: So hopefully this is indeed a minor stint for Nolan
- 2:50Speaker 1: Gorman and we see him back in action soon. In
- 2:53Speaker 1: the meantime, Thomas a. Jac will kind of be that
- 2:56Speaker 1: bench death, he might get a start. He can play shortstop.
- 3:00Speaker 1: The Cardinals want to give Mason win a day off
- 3:01Speaker 1: the heat, you know, so JC is the natural fit
- 3:04Speaker 1: at shortstop there for their roster plays. So we'll see
- 3:07Speaker 1: s JC. But this is not necessarily looking like it's
- 3:10Speaker 1: going to be a long term thing. So all things aside,
- 3:13Speaker 1: you know, it's not the worst news in the world.
- 3:17Speaker 1: But that's not why you're here. You're here most likely
- 3:21Speaker 1: because you want to talk about the bullpen, and I'm
- 3:24Speaker 1: here to tell you that I think we should take
- 3:27Speaker 1: one big, collective deep breath, and I'm prepared for the
- 3:29Speaker 1: blowback already, but hear me out. Prior to Friday's game,
- 3:34Speaker 1: Cardinals relievers had a collective two six six ERA and
- 3:38Speaker 1: they were one of three teams in all of baseball
- 3:41Speaker 1: whose bullpen had not given up a home run. The
- 3:44Speaker 1: New York Mets and the Boston Red Sox were on
- 3:46Speaker 1: that list. I do not know if the Mets give
- 3:48Speaker 1: up the home run yesterday, so fact check me for
- 3:50Speaker 1: that one. It's it been great over the last three
- 3:54Speaker 1: four games. No, but let's do our normal preface with
- 3:57Speaker 1: the bullpen. We over analyst every single relief performance because
- 4:02Speaker 1: they're coming in in the most pivotal spots of the game.
- 4:05Speaker 1: If the game is blown in the seventh or eighth,
- 4:07Speaker 1: who are we looking at. We're looking at the believers
- 4:09Speaker 1: right now. If the game is one of the seventh,
- 4:10Speaker 1: of the eighth or the eighth, we're not really talking
- 4:12Speaker 1: about the believers. We're like, yeah, that's their job. But
- 4:15Speaker 1: the second they don't come through, all of a sudden,
- 4:17Speaker 1: it's like, oh, Memphis time. I don't think we're there yet.
- 4:20Speaker 1: I think there are some players to monitor. I think
- 4:22Speaker 1: there are some things to be slightly concerned about, but
- 4:25Speaker 1: I don't think we are in full panic mode over
- 4:28Speaker 1: the bullpen just yet. Let's start with Ryan Fernandez, who,
- 4:32Speaker 1: as we know, a Rule five pick last year, was
- 4:35Speaker 1: nails for them, really developed into a place where Allie
- 4:38Speaker 1: Marvel felt comfortable using him in a high leverage role
- 4:41Speaker 1: at the end of the season, and we're going to
- 4:43Speaker 1: continue to see Riyan Fernandez in higher leverage roles. Now,
- 4:46Speaker 1: it hasn't looked good, and we're going to pull up
- 4:48Speaker 1: the stats and take a deep breath. He's pitched almost
- 4:52Speaker 1: four innings, he's allowed an earned run in each of them,
- 4:55Speaker 1: except for the home opener on March twenty ninth. The
- 4:59Speaker 1: last two out of the April outings in particular not great.
- 5:02Speaker 1: Two earned runs three runs total on April first, three
- 5:05Speaker 1: earned runs on two hits on April fourth, and it
- 5:10Speaker 1: just hasn't been affective for Ryan Fernandez. And again we'll
- 5:13Speaker 1: preface this with a small sample size, but at this point,
- 5:16Speaker 1: I think it's fair to say, hey, what's going on?
- 5:18Speaker 1: So we asked him. Proof that we do ask questions.
- 5:21Speaker 1: And credit to Ryan Fernandez, who got roughed up the
- 5:24Speaker 1: last couple of appearances and was really agreeable to this
- 5:27Speaker 1: conversation after the game on Friday, where he said, I'm
- 5:30Speaker 1: working on some things. I don't know where this happened
- 5:33Speaker 1: over spring, but I kind of lost the shape of
- 5:34Speaker 1: my slider, the feel of my cutter, and I'm encouraged.
- 5:37Speaker 1: I definitely felt like my last two pitches on Friday's
- 5:40Speaker 1: outing something felt better. Something clicked, And anytime you hear
- 5:43Speaker 1: a player say something clicked, you can kind of take
- 5:46Speaker 1: that mental sigh, that sigh of relief. He said, I've
- 5:49Speaker 1: been working at it extensively. It came out and sprang,
- 5:51Speaker 1: everything was fine, and then I kind of lost it
- 5:53Speaker 1: halfway through, he said, him and pitching coach Dusty Blake
- 5:55Speaker 1: have been looking at all the numbers and they feel
- 5:58Speaker 1: like they figure some things out. Mechanic wise, he felt
- 6:01Speaker 1: like he was pulling off the ball. His head was pulling.
- 6:03Speaker 1: I'm not going to like demonstrate that because it would
- 6:05Speaker 1: look really weird, but I think the optics. You know,
- 6:08Speaker 1: if you understand baseball already, sports, really, if you're pulling
- 6:11Speaker 1: your head off, you're probably gonna lose some control and
- 6:13Speaker 1: command there. Baseball Savant, for those of you familiar with
- 6:17Speaker 1: that page, does a really nice job of breaking down
- 6:20Speaker 1: pitch profiles from year to year. Shout out Jeff Jones,
- 6:23Speaker 1: who was looking at this yesterday. If you go to
- 6:25Speaker 1: Ryan Fernanda's Baseball Savant page, you can see his slider,
- 6:29Speaker 1: in particular, the movement, the vertical break, the horizontal brake,
- 6:32Speaker 1: how that compares to last year. We're looking specifically at
- 6:36Speaker 1: the slider because that's the pitch that seems to be
- 6:37Speaker 1: giving Fernandez the most trouble early on, and it is
- 6:41Speaker 1: a noticeably different number. So I would go on Baseball Savant,
- 6:44Speaker 1: I'm looking at it right now and just kind of
- 6:46Speaker 1: compare and see, so what I reference these numbers, it's
- 6:48Speaker 1: easier to understand where I'm coming from. He wants his
- 6:52Speaker 1: break to be at as close as zero as possible,
- 6:54Speaker 1: he says, if he doesn't, it gets too loopy. And
- 6:56Speaker 1: you know, if you have slider, you definitely don't want
- 6:58Speaker 1: it to be loopy. And last year he did a
- 7:01Speaker 1: nice job with his slider and just being effective with it,
- 7:06Speaker 1: and this year again hasn't really been that effective for him.
- 7:10Speaker 1: But talking to him and Ollie Marmel after the game,
- 7:12Speaker 1: as they continue to work through things in real time,
- 7:15Speaker 1: slowly encouraging. I don't think we've pressed the panic button
- 7:19Speaker 1: on Fernandez yet. I think we give him a couple
- 7:20Speaker 1: more a couple more appearances. If you continue to struggle
- 7:23Speaker 1: with the slider, we're having a different conversation. But the
- 7:26Speaker 1: good news is that they're at least aware of the problem.
- 7:28Speaker 1: They have a game plan to fix it, so we'll
- 7:31Speaker 1: see how that goes. What I'm not really worried about
- 7:34Speaker 1: seriously is the eighth and ninth Inny and tandem of
- 7:36Speaker 1: Film Maeton and Ryan Helsley. I think the film Aton
- 7:40Speaker 1: signing is going and is going to end up being
- 7:43Speaker 1: one of the sneaky good sidings of the year, and hey,
- 7:45Speaker 1: if you're only going to make one free agent signing
- 7:48Speaker 1: Jo Moselak, it better be a good one. And I
- 7:51Speaker 1: think film Aton is exactly what this bullpen needs. And
- 7:53Speaker 1: we talked about it when he was signed, kind of
- 7:55Speaker 1: that veteran presence. He's also so effective and so durable.
- 7:59Speaker 1: Now you're going to see a little bit of a
- 8:00Speaker 1: hesitance from the Cardinals in terms of that durability standpoint
- 8:04Speaker 1: in the first few weeks of the season, because Phil
- 8:06Speaker 1: Mayton was signed so late in the spring, because he
- 8:09Speaker 1: didn't have a full spring to ramp up. He said,
- 8:11Speaker 1: he's fine, but the Cardinals are going to be, you know,
- 8:13Speaker 1: practice patients or caution with him, just to make sure
- 8:17Speaker 1: that they don't overdo it early. But I really like
- 8:19Speaker 1: what we're seeing out of film Mayton. He's effective and
- 8:22Speaker 1: when he comes in the game, you kind of just
- 8:24Speaker 1: already know it's that bridge to Ryan Helsley, very similar
- 8:27Speaker 1: with what we saw from Andrew Kittridge, and Helsley's looks great.
- 8:30Speaker 1: In fact, the Cardinals have been winning or you know,
- 8:34Speaker 1: he's only only had one safe situation, so you know,
- 8:37Speaker 1: I don't really think anone's worried about Ryan Helsley either,
- 8:40Speaker 1: Jojo Romero fine. I thought we saw a better outing
- 8:43Speaker 1: from him against the Angels. Chris Roycroft's going to continue
- 8:46Speaker 1: to develop in these spots. I think Kyle Lahy is
- 8:48Speaker 1: going to be fine as well. That's someone that the
- 8:50Speaker 1: pitching staff is very or the Cardinals coaching staff is
- 8:54Speaker 1: very high on. And you know, Steven Mattz has looked
- 8:56Speaker 1: fine in this long relief role. We talked about the
- 8:59Speaker 1: differences and the balances that you have as an organization
- 9:02Speaker 1: when you use you essentially have seven relievers and a
- 9:06Speaker 1: long man, which is what Steven Mattz is, and that's
- 9:09Speaker 1: difficult for usage. Like Stephen Mattz through three Indians yesterday.
- 9:14Speaker 1: He's going to be down for at least three days,
- 9:16Speaker 1: so then you really have seven relievers to choose from
- 9:18Speaker 1: instead of eight. But this is the path the Cardinals
- 9:21Speaker 1: wanted to go on, so that's where that's where they're
- 9:24Speaker 1: going to be. I'm not worried about the bullpen yet.
- 9:26Speaker 1: I think we give them a couple of days come
- 9:28Speaker 1: back from the road trip and we're still talking about
- 9:30Speaker 1: late inning leads being surrendered, then I will say I'm
- 9:32Speaker 1: sorry and maybe we can worry about it, but right
- 9:34Speaker 1: now I think we all just take a deep breath.
- 9:38Speaker 1: They're knock going to win every single game, and we'll
- 9:40Speaker 1: get into some of the reasons why I think this
- 9:42Speaker 1: has been such an encouraging start for the Cardinals after
- 9:45Speaker 1: we hear from this episode sponsor.
- 9:50Speaker 2: Ft Fam Legends Never Die. That is the motto for Homage.
- 9:54Speaker 2: Go to Homage dot com and get yourself maybe one
- 9:57Speaker 2: of these teas. This is one of my favorites from
- 9:59Speaker 2: spring training. You got little grape Fruit League action, nice
- 10:02Speaker 2: iconic looking logo, and behind me on the back is
- 10:06Speaker 2: all the teams that are listed for the Grapefruit League.
- 10:08Speaker 2: You've got. Of course, if you're more of an Arizona person,
- 10:11Speaker 2: you've got the T shirt for that too. But Kratz,
- 10:13Speaker 2: I just love the way that they give you the
- 10:16Speaker 2: highest quality material and then a little vintage action if
- 10:19Speaker 2: you're looking for it.
- 10:21Speaker 3: I love the vintage. I've been a baseball fan my
- 10:24Speaker 3: whole life, and teams changed their logos. If you're looking
- 10:27Speaker 3: for a logo that your team used to have, Homage
- 10:30Speaker 3: is your place to go. Go cop one of the
- 10:33Speaker 3: old logos from the major league teams that maybe they
- 10:36Speaker 3: don't use anymore.
- 10:38Speaker 2: Yeah, homage dot com slash foul Territory. Go to the
- 10:41Speaker 2: website and then use the code foul Territory the name
- 10:43Speaker 2: of our show for twenty percent off. If you're a
- 10:46Speaker 2: first time purchaser on the website, go check it out FTFAM.
- 10:51Speaker 1: Wait, actually really like that. I love the old classic logos.
- 10:53Speaker 1: I am going to check that out after this episode. Okay,
- 10:57Speaker 1: as we record this on Saturday, April fifth, hours before
- 11:00Speaker 1: the Cardinals, maybe maybe not play a game. I'm looking
- 11:02Speaker 1: out the window right now. It doesn't look like it's raining,
- 11:05Speaker 1: but doesn't also look great. They're four and three, and
- 11:10Speaker 1: every single one of their games they've been competitive in.
- 11:12Speaker 1: And while yesterday's game, I think there's gonna be some
- 11:14Speaker 1: griping over just because the pitching not good. Let's starting
- 11:20Speaker 1: the first inning, right, the Red Sox come out. They
- 11:23Speaker 1: hang a five spot on Eric Fetty. Fetty has virtually
- 11:25Speaker 1: zero command. He just doesn't look like himself. You kind
- 11:27Speaker 1: of knew from the jump it was not gonna be
- 11:29Speaker 1: a good day from him last year's team. If any
- 11:33Speaker 1: team puts on a five spot in the first inning
- 11:35Speaker 1: against the twenty twenty four Saint Louis Cardinals. That game
- 11:38Speaker 1: is over. They're not coming back from that. Now. I'm
- 11:40Speaker 1: packing it up. Close the scorebook, shut the computer. See
- 11:43Speaker 1: I have a great day this year's team. And I
- 11:46Speaker 1: think this was felt collectively across the riders, at least
- 11:48Speaker 1: the ones I was sitting next to. We're like, all right,
- 11:51Speaker 1: how are they going to come back from this one?
- 11:52Speaker 1: This is a good test for them to see if
- 11:54Speaker 1: this offense can rally back. If you're gonna give up
- 11:56Speaker 1: five runs, if you're gonna trail five zero, dude in
- 11:58Speaker 1: the first dungeon like the eighth, and they did. Von
- 12:02Speaker 1: Herrera continues to swing it three run homer, which off
- 12:04Speaker 1: the bat I did not think was leaving the yard.
- 12:07Speaker 1: It might have been just a difficult day to pitch
- 12:08Speaker 1: at Fenway yesterday because balls were flying everywhere and they
- 12:13Speaker 1: continue to crawl back. Let me pull up the box
- 12:15Speaker 1: score because there were so many lee changes yesterday that
- 12:18Speaker 1: it was kind of hard to keep up. So the
- 12:20Speaker 1: Red Sox score five in the first, Cardinals going, they
- 12:23Speaker 1: get a run back in the third, Boston scores again.
- 12:25Speaker 1: Then that three run home or from Herrera and the
- 12:27Speaker 1: fourth makes it a six to four ball game. And
- 12:29Speaker 1: you're feeling much better about a situation. If it's six'
- 12:32Speaker 1: four in the fourth rather than five to zero in the,
- 12:34Speaker 1: first then it's a one run ball. Game The cardinals
- 12:37Speaker 1: score again in the, fifth and then it gets a
- 12:39Speaker 1: little dicey. There Eric fetty gets through, five which is
- 12:43Speaker 1: important for bullpen length and saving. Arms that he gets
- 12:46Speaker 1: through five after coming out so rocky is. Important but
- 12:49Speaker 1: they tack two runs on The Red sox two and
- 12:55Speaker 1: then it just kind of becomes like a back and
- 12:56Speaker 1: forth scoring. Affair but, no The cardinals did not come
- 12:59Speaker 1: out on top of this. Situation this is an encouraging
- 13:02Speaker 1: sign because they kept fighting, back they kept taking quality of.
- 13:06Speaker 1: Avats you, know they were never out of, it even
- 13:08Speaker 1: in the ninth where The Red sox like tried to
- 13:11Speaker 1: give that ball game. Away cardinals score three times on
- 13:15Speaker 1: two errors in the, ninth then load the. Bases The
- 13:17Speaker 1: Red sox have to bring in their. Closer they have
- 13:20Speaker 1: to bring in our oldest chapman to close that game,
- 13:22Speaker 1: out which is not Something Alex kor wanted to. Do,
- 13:25Speaker 1: no The cardinals didn't win that game of Von herrera
- 13:26Speaker 1: bounced into a game any double. Play But Ollie marvel
- 13:29Speaker 1: talks about little victories within, losses AND i don't want
- 13:32Speaker 1: to sound like this is, like, oh you, know they're
- 13:35Speaker 1: trying their. Best this is not Where i'm coming, from
- 13:37Speaker 1: but from a baseball, perspective it is important if the
- 13:40Speaker 1: if your, team if you're The Red sox and you're
- 13:43Speaker 1: blowing out a team and they rally so hard that
- 13:45Speaker 1: all of a, sudden an off day for your closer
- 13:47Speaker 1: or a rest day for your, closer you now all
- 13:49Speaker 1: of a sudden have to put him in the. Ballgame
- 13:50Speaker 1: that impacts your usage for the rest of the. Series so,
- 13:53Speaker 1: no The cardinals did not win that ball that ball.
- 13:56Speaker 1: Game they made it interesting the ninth they came up,
- 13:58Speaker 1: short but The Red sox had to use their. Closer
- 14:00Speaker 1: now it's a little bit impacted for the rest of the.
- 14:03Speaker 1: Series the fight from this team is what's. Different and
- 14:06Speaker 1: as we're one week indo the, Season i'm curious drop
- 14:09Speaker 1: me a note in the. Comments, okay that photo behind
- 14:14Speaker 1: me quick side. Rant it is so. SCARY i literally
- 14:17Speaker 1: can't look at it BEFORE i fall, asleep and now
- 14:19Speaker 1: it's ALL i can see in the. Screen if you're
- 14:20Speaker 1: on the, podcast you're not gonna know What i'm talking
- 14:22Speaker 1: about but there is a frame photo in my very
- 14:26Speaker 1: small hotel room and it freaks me. Out don't like. It,
- 14:30Speaker 1: anyway back to my, rant this is WHY i can't
- 14:32Speaker 1: host solo BECAUSE i have the attention span of like
- 14:35Speaker 1: an actual. Squirrel last year's team did not have these
- 14:39Speaker 1: kinds of competitive. Bats and when we talked To alie
- 14:41Speaker 1: after the, game he, said you, know if we keep
- 14:43Speaker 1: having approaches like, this if they keep, fighting if they keep,
- 14:48Speaker 1: rallying every inning is like its own. Game he said
- 14:51Speaker 1: that from day one of the, season AND i do see,
- 14:53Speaker 1: it because they could be trailing by, five they could
- 14:56Speaker 1: be down by, two they could be up by. Three
- 14:57Speaker 1: their approach is the same they are unless. Offensively that
- 15:02Speaker 1: is a really good sign and a sign THAT i
- 15:04Speaker 1: think this club might be a little more. Fun So
- 15:07Speaker 1: i'm interested to know how fans are feeling about. This,
- 15:09Speaker 1: again it's only been a, week BUT i think there's
- 15:12Speaker 1: some very encouraging early returns on the. Offense do you
- 15:15Speaker 1: feel the same WAY i? Do do you feel like
- 15:16Speaker 1: this approach is? Different do you feel like when the
- 15:19Speaker 1: team is losing that they're not exactly out of? It
- 15:22Speaker 1: BECAUSE i, do AND i did not feel that way last,
- 15:25Speaker 1: year and most of the TIME i felt like after
- 15:27Speaker 1: a big scoring any and from or scoring opportunity from
- 15:30Speaker 1: the other, team that that game was. Over so the
- 15:34Speaker 1: last thing we're going to talk about, here BECAUSE i
- 15:36Speaker 1: need to get my life together and get To Fenway
- 15:38Speaker 1: park and beat the rain and also get a, Coffee
- 15:42Speaker 1: we're gonna talk About Wilson conturrast a little, bit AND
- 15:44Speaker 1: i still don't think we have anything to be concerned.
- 15:46Speaker 1: About he smoked a single in his lasted. Bat he
- 15:49Speaker 1: did check out three times before that and bounce into
- 15:51Speaker 1: a double. Play But i've got a couple of questions
- 15:55Speaker 1: on if it's time to Drop Wilson contra's down in the.
- 15:58Speaker 1: ORDER i like him in the two, hole obviously all
- 16:02Speaker 1: the marvel does. TOO i don't think so, Yet but
- 16:05Speaker 1: let's see how the rest of This Red sox series. Goes.
- 16:08Speaker 1: Hope maybe you, know For, controrosts that hard hit ball
- 16:11Speaker 1: towards the end of the game yesterday got him back
- 16:13Speaker 1: on track because he really smoked. It it was, loud a
- 16:15Speaker 1: lot of anger in that. Swing but it hasn't been
- 16:17Speaker 1: a good start For. Controrosts let me look up his
- 16:19Speaker 1: stats real. Quick let me pull that. UP i should
- 16:21Speaker 1: have done this. Beforehand H he has two hits on the,
- 16:26Speaker 1: season so that's. GOOD i also didn't spell his name.
- 16:28Speaker 1: Right even, better two hits on the. Year, uh his
- 16:32Speaker 1: hops is two. Eleven not. Great it's not what you.
- 16:36Speaker 1: Want we know he's been something to start the. Year
- 16:38Speaker 1: when do they when or if The cardinals drop him
- 16:41Speaker 1: down in the. ORDER i don't think it's time to
- 16:43Speaker 1: do that, yet because you want, to you, know support your.
- 16:45Speaker 1: Guy he is a, huge huge part of this offense
- 16:49Speaker 1: and you want to express confidence and, hey conturists, like
- 16:51Speaker 1: you're gonna be. Fine we're gonna keep him the two.
- 16:52Speaker 1: Hole but if The cardinals do drop, him MIGHT i
- 16:55Speaker 1: suggest for those of you who listened to other episodes
- 16:59Speaker 1: that it might be time For herrera in the two.
- 17:01Speaker 1: Hole i'm manifesting. This Olie marmele likes the lefty, righty
- 17:05Speaker 1: lefty righty split at the top of the. LINEUP i
- 17:07Speaker 1: think it makes a lot of, sense AND i think
- 17:09Speaker 1: the players like it. Too like we talked about before
- 17:11Speaker 1: in prior, episodes it's really hard as a opposing manager
- 17:13Speaker 1: to game plan when you go, lefty, righty lefty, Brighty
- 17:17Speaker 1: so sure could another lefty come. Up you know you're
- 17:21Speaker 1: thinking like A burleson, maybe but then you have three
- 17:25Speaker 1: lefties at the top of your, order and that's you
- 17:28Speaker 1: create a lane for the opposing manager to manage against.
- 17:30Speaker 1: You AND i don't Think allie marmal is going to do.
- 17:32Speaker 1: That so if The cardinals get to the point where
- 17:34Speaker 1: they feel like they no longer can Have contrarast in
- 17:39Speaker 1: the two hole, AGAIN i don't think they're there, yet
- 17:41Speaker 1: but let's you, know hypothetically, SPEAKING i Think herrera is
- 17:45Speaker 1: the natural fit to go. There he's looked great his
- 17:48Speaker 1: three homer. Game we talked about that and the last
- 17:50Speaker 1: episode With bernie the. Swing everything looks fine. THERE i
- 17:55Speaker 1: guess the, moral like the point of this episode is
- 17:58Speaker 1: let's all just take a deep. Breath let's be a little.
- 18:00Speaker 1: PATIENT i know we don't have that. SETTING i get.
- 18:02Speaker 1: It i'm prepared to ride the rollercoaster with you guys every.
- 18:05Speaker 1: YEAR i know that. This you, know after two three
- 18:07Speaker 1: game sample, size fans want to shake it. UP i,
- 18:10Speaker 1: Understand But i'm just saying, here whether it's the, bullpen
- 18:13Speaker 1: whether It's wils And conturists slump to start the, year
- 18:15Speaker 1: let's just give it a little bit more, time let's
- 18:18Speaker 1: see where the team is at after the road, trip
- 18:20Speaker 1: and then Maybe Alli marmal shakes it. UP i will
- 18:22Speaker 1: say this, YEAR i thought he always managed well in
- 18:25Speaker 1: terms of lineup, construction playing, time when to use different.
- 18:29Speaker 1: GUYS i loved him pinch Hitting baker in that situation
- 18:32Speaker 1: in the ninth there, also that was a great bat From.
- 18:35Speaker 1: Luken baker was definitely swinging for the monster there in
- 18:38Speaker 1: a scoring, opportunity which is the whole point of his.
- 18:40Speaker 1: Role but you Saw Brent brown's whole strategy in that at.
- 18:44Speaker 1: Bat there's a time he, hit there's a time of.
- 18:45Speaker 1: Slug he was, slugging and then he didn't get the
- 18:48Speaker 1: pitch he. Wanted he was super selective and he worked
- 18:50Speaker 1: a pivotal. Walk so shout Out Lucan. Baker that was
- 18:52Speaker 1: just another sign to me that the offense is Clicking cardinals.
- 18:56Speaker 1: FANS i think this team is going to be better
- 18:58Speaker 1: than we might have initially thought me at least to
- 19:00Speaker 1: start the. Season and drop me in the comments too
- 19:04Speaker 1: if you feel like that's the. Same we'll do a
- 19:05Speaker 1: mail bag episode. Soon we're kind of due for. That
