- 0:09Speaker 1: He is a British actor, He's an icon. I flew
- 0:12Speaker 1: to London to sit down with him to talk about
- 0:14Speaker 1: his new high octane action comedy. It is called Write
- 0:18Speaker 1: or Die. It's just dropped on Prime Video. It also
- 0:20Speaker 1: stars Octavia Spencer and this afternoon's guest. Our next guest
- 0:28Speaker 1: has starred in Love Actually.
- 0:29Speaker 2: Best shag you ever had, Britney.
- 0:31Speaker 1: Spears, Pirates of the Caribbean. What is your purpose here,
- 0:36Speaker 1: Jack Sparrowson. We just had a list and the new
- 0:39Speaker 1: show Ride or Die.
- 0:40Speaker 2: Make a choice of your true organization.
- 0:44Speaker 3: Ladies and gentlemen, please welcome.
- 0:46Speaker 2: My name is Phil nah Bill.
- 0:48Speaker 1: Pleasure to meet you and you I feel like and
- 0:51Speaker 1: I mean this was an absolute love. As an Australian,
- 0:55Speaker 1: I don't know if there's anyone more British than you.
- 0:58Speaker 1: If someone was to say, just describe me someone British,
- 1:01Speaker 1: You're who comes to mind.
- 1:03Speaker 2: Well, that's very strange. And you're not the only person
- 1:04Speaker 2: who said that to me.
- 1:05Speaker 3: And a woman in the street recently ran up to
- 1:07Speaker 3: me and she said, you're so and then she struggled
- 1:11Speaker 3: for something to say, and she said English. And I
- 1:15Speaker 3: was checked what I was wearing, Yeah, like nothing particularly
- 1:18Speaker 3: and I wasn't wearing a union jacket or anything, or
- 1:21Speaker 3: a bowler hat, and I don't And a young woman
- 1:24Speaker 3: in Rome ran up to me. I was walking to
- 1:26Speaker 3: dinner and I was wearing, you know, normal kind of stuff.
- 1:29Speaker 3: And she walked up and said, you look so English.
- 1:32Speaker 3: And I don't really understand what it means.
- 1:34Speaker 1: I don't know what it means either. All I'm telling
- 1:36Speaker 1: you is is that city opposite you.
- 1:37Speaker 2: But I'm yeah, I'm not complaining, you know what.
- 1:41Speaker 1: Also, and this is a compliment. Whenever I see you
- 1:44Speaker 1: as in a role, I have to take a beat
- 1:48Speaker 1: because I don't know whether you're a good guy or
- 1:50Speaker 1: a bad guy.
- 1:51Speaker 2: Oh well, that's good.
- 1:52Speaker 1: We like that, Yes we do.
- 1:54Speaker 2: That's very very good.
- 1:55Speaker 1: IMDb says one hundred and eighty nine projects kidding is right.
- 2:00Speaker 3: Well, I don't know. I never looked, but it's possible.
- 2:03Speaker 3: I am old enough, you know, I looked. Last time
- 2:06Speaker 3: I looked, I can't remember last time I looked at
- 2:08Speaker 3: It was about sixty but that was a long time ago.
- 2:10Speaker 1: When people come up to you and scream at you
- 2:12Speaker 1: on the street. You very British. What's the character that
- 2:16Speaker 1: you probably get recognized for the most?
- 2:19Speaker 2: It depends on their age.
- 2:21Speaker 3: If they're between the age of fourteen and twenty seven,
- 2:24Speaker 3: it's usually from Shawn of the Dead, okay, or if
- 2:29Speaker 3: they are I mean The Pirates of the Caribbean is
- 2:33Speaker 3: nine to ninety. But then I'm always curious because they
- 2:36Speaker 3: come up and go Davy Jones, and.
- 2:37Speaker 2: You go, how do you know that? Yeah, I haven't
- 2:39Speaker 2: got any tells.
- 2:40Speaker 3: But the answer to your question is a runaway about time,
- 2:44Speaker 3: the dad in a Time.
- 2:46Speaker 1: But also to what a tear jerker character, the speech,
- 2:50Speaker 1: the relationship that character built with his son in About Time.
- 2:54Speaker 3: Oh yeah, it's a wonderful film. And Richard Curtis, I mean,
- 2:57Speaker 3: he gave up directing after that film, which I think
- 3:00Speaker 3: is a great shame.
- 3:00Speaker 2: It's great shame for me.
- 3:01Speaker 3: Obviously, but I think he kind of said everything he
- 3:04Speaker 3: wanted to say, and that has entered the language and
- 3:06Speaker 3: it's easily the film that people mostly talk to me about.
- 3:10Speaker 1: You've now done the pivot into playing is it a
- 3:13Speaker 1: good guy? Is a bad guy? The director? I saw
- 3:16Speaker 1: you in a movie on the plane on the Way
- 3:18Speaker 1: Over Shelter, You also played a very similar character. Are
- 3:21Speaker 1: you the good guy? Are you the bad guy?
- 3:23Speaker 2: Have you seen the whole series?
- 3:25Speaker 1: No, I have not the whole thing.
- 3:26Speaker 2: Well, then I can't.
- 3:27Speaker 1: Don't ruin it.
- 3:28Speaker 2: No.
- 3:28Speaker 1: Bill Night is on the air with us now. He
- 3:30Speaker 1: is starring opposite Octavia Spencer and Hannah Waddingham in the
- 3:34Speaker 1: new action adventure comedy. The show's called Ride or Die.
- 3:38Speaker 1: It's on Prime Video. Let's take a listen to the
- 3:40Speaker 1: trailer and then we'll keep chatting to the icon that is,
- 3:45Speaker 1: who are these people? Your husband stole millions from the mob?
- 3:50Speaker 1: Another after you just.
- 3:52Speaker 3: The last important thing in the world to me, make
- 3:54Speaker 3: a choice of your friend this organization.
- 4:01Speaker 2: We're going to steal your cough So sorry, sir.
- 4:05Speaker 1: Do you have spy capabilities within you? Are you a liar?
- 4:09Speaker 3: I think I am a good layer. I think because
- 4:12Speaker 3: at least I like to think I'm a good lawyer.
- 4:13Speaker 3: I've just read a book called, a very good book
- 4:15Speaker 3: called Attention Seeking Behavior, which is all about lying. It's
- 4:19Speaker 3: a novel anyway, but I think yeah, because acting the
- 4:22Speaker 3: cliche is that it is lying, and it's like telling long,
- 4:25Speaker 3: elaborate lies. So you have to be quite good at it.
- 4:28Speaker 3: So I figured I would be quite good at lying.
- 4:30Speaker 3: Whether I'd have the nerve, that's another question.
- 4:33Speaker 1: Favorite part of the new series. Is it the co stars?
- 4:36Speaker 1: Is it the lying? Is it just you know, being
- 4:39Speaker 1: the director and being the one that calls the shots.
- 4:41Speaker 2: It's nice to be the boss. Yes, it's nice. It's
- 4:43Speaker 2: fun to be the boss.
- 4:44Speaker 3: And I, you know, and I had a huge office
- 4:46Speaker 3: the size of a cathedral. I had a huge desk.
- 4:49Speaker 3: I was dressed to the nines.
- 4:51Speaker 1: When it comes to like the spy stuff, and you know,
- 4:54Speaker 1: if it's six or the CIA, or whoever it is,
- 4:57Speaker 1: how into our lives do you think they are? Did
- 5:00Speaker 1: you get an window into doing any of these roles
- 5:02Speaker 1: that you've played, sort of like in that sort of
- 5:04Speaker 1: spy area.
- 5:06Speaker 3: I didn't from the roles I play, but I read
- 5:08Speaker 3: every espionage every decent espionage novel it's ever been published.
- 5:13Speaker 2: I've read it, like a lot of people. I'm a
- 5:15Speaker 2: sucker for all that stuff.
- 5:17Speaker 3: And I think the answer to your question is they
- 5:18Speaker 3: are deeply into our lives, but they are also as
- 5:21Speaker 3: incompetent as everybody else, you know what I mean.
- 5:24Speaker 1: They can be as deep as they want. But if
- 5:26Speaker 1: they can't put it together, whoys. My final question for you,
- 5:29Speaker 1: because I'm running out of time. I got told here
- 5:31Speaker 1: that everyone who lives in London has a Bill nice story.
- 5:34Speaker 1: Have you heard this theory?
- 5:36Speaker 2: I have heard this.
- 5:36Speaker 1: It's like the six Degrees of Kevin Bacon, as in,
- 5:40Speaker 1: everyone who lives in London has a story of running
- 5:42Speaker 1: into you on the street.
- 5:43Speaker 3: Yeah, it's true because I and it's entirely because I
- 5:47Speaker 3: don't own a car, and because I make no concessions
- 5:50Speaker 3: to the fact that I'm on television or anything. So
- 5:52Speaker 3: I walk about because if I can't walk about, then
- 5:54Speaker 3: the game's up. Now that I've got a podcast, the
- 5:58Speaker 3: podcast has generated a lot more interested in me, so
- 6:01Speaker 3: I get I mean, rather than films. Now the people
- 6:04Speaker 3: that come up from industry inevitably now say, you know,
- 6:07Speaker 3: if I can quote without being begging myself up, they say,
- 6:10Speaker 3: I love your podcast, which is called ill advised by Bill.
- 6:13Speaker 1: No, well, I've got to be a nice story now too,
- 6:15Speaker 1: so and mine was thara and thoroughly great and entertaining.
- 6:18Speaker 1: So thank you for the time, my pleasure, Thank you show.
