Latest / Inside West Palm Beach / The Battle Against Greenhouse Gas And What You Can Do To Help
Transcript
- 0:09Welcome to the City Center podcast from West Palm Beach,
- 0:12Florida.
- 0:13I'm Jerry Marcelo.
- 0:15The battle against greenhouse gas emissions and the threats they pose is considered a global issue.
- 0:22And for good reason,
- 0:24there is no corner of the globe that is completely untouched by the accumulation of greenhouse gasses in the atmosphere.
- 0:31While the effects span the globe,
- 0:33the solution may come down to individual towns and cities and what they do to conserve resources and keep pollution in check.
- 0:41The city of West Palm Beach is hard at work trying to educate residents and implement solutions that could keep the planet healthy for decades to come.
- 0:50Joining me today to talk about it is Lara Slain sustainability program coordinator for the city of West Palm Beach.
- 0:57Lara.
- 0:57Welcome.
- 0:58Hello,
- 0:58everyone.
- 0:58Thank you Jerry for having me here today.
- 1:01Ok.
- 1:01So Lara,
- 1:02we're gonna start with some basics.
- 1:04West Palm Beach is very aware of the existence of greenhouse gas.
- 1:08Everyone's heard the term,
- 1:09but I don't think a lot of people really understand what it is and how this gas is causing what we believe to be global warming.
- 1:18Tell us how it all works.
- 1:20Ok.
- 1:20So let's start what is greenhouse gasses?
- 1:23This is seven different gasses and not going to go to details.
- 1:27The main is which we're focusing is carbon dioxide co two and methane.
- 1:33And where are they coming from?
- 1:35It's from the human activities such as um transportation,
- 1:40uh building its heating and cooling and the waste.
- 1:43So also from agriculture,
- 1:45but those ones less so those are main sources of excess carbon pollution.
- 1:52So and then why,
- 1:54how are they connected to the increase?
- 1:57I mean,
- 1:57we're all seeing it,
- 1:58the the summers are getting hotter.
- 2:01Hurricanes are more powerful.
- 2:02All this seems to be connected to this global warming.
- 2:05How does gas like methane have an impact on warming the warming the globe?
- 2:11So basically when we do after,
- 2:14let's say industrial revolution,
- 2:16we start burning coal and gas and oil and you know,
- 2:20starting all the activities,
- 2:22all of these gasses that goes to the atmosphere and some of them not disappearing,
- 2:27they stay for over 100 years and they think of it as a blanket which just covers the planet and heating it.
- 2:34So while that happened in the climate,
- 2:37weather patterns,
- 2:39which is climate,
- 2:40they shift and they changing.
- 2:42So we know that trees and ocean um they work as a sponge,
- 2:48they uh take this carbon excess emission from uh the atmosphere,
- 2:54but uh humans produce so much emissions so they are not able to cope with that.
- 3:02So essentially these gasses form like a quilt that keep heat that would normally escape into,
- 3:10I guess,
- 3:10space or at least the upper atmosphere that keeps it close to the earth and that's what's really causing our temperature to slowly climb up.
- 3:18Absolutely.
- 3:18It's a radiation.
- 3:20So the heat goes to the planet,
- 3:21some of it goes back and because of the gasses,
- 3:25not all of it can go through that blanket and it stays and warm in the planet.
- 3:31Ok.
- 3:31So we see the problem.
- 3:33It's global,
- 3:34it's everywhere.
- 3:35Absolutely.
- 3:36What are some solutions that we can be working towards?
- 3:38Solutions are everywhere.
- 3:41So solutions number one,
- 3:42like it's the global decarbonization,
- 3:45basically think about it.
- 3:47It's uh everything you do,
- 3:49it's have to be better way,
- 3:51for example,
- 3:53uh driving,
- 3:54you know,
- 3:54you can use the car which is electric vehicle,
- 3:57ev um which is doesn't produce the carbon dioxide,
- 4:01right?
- 4:02Um Buildings,
- 4:03buildings could be built by new standards which using less energy,
- 4:09less water.
- 4:11Um It,
- 4:12it's the circular economy,
- 4:13everything you produce,
- 4:15you don't throw away,
- 4:16it goes back to the economy.
- 4:19It's,
- 4:19it's a lot of it's a solutions are here.
- 4:23They're,
- 4:23they're here.
- 4:24So,
- 4:24so conservation,
- 4:25recycling,
- 4:26reusing materials over and over and over again.
- 4:29So they,
- 4:30they don't become a waste product.
- 4:31And then also,
- 4:32as you mentioned,
- 4:33transportation,
- 4:34obviously,
- 4:34cars uh create a lot of the emissions that we're concerned about and using,
- 4:41you know,
- 4:42uh public transportation uh just human power to get around is part of the solution.
- 4:47So,
- 4:48but these seem to be very large scale sort of projects.
- 4:51What can residents do?
- 4:54What can a city of West Palm Beach do to really contribute to minimizing global warming?
- 5:01Yes,
- 5:01it is global and city on one level doing.
- 5:06Um we do have uh transportation and mobility manager which working on public transportation in the city of West Palm Beach to become um elec electric uh instead of the trolley on our side,
- 5:20we do have different programs helping uh residents to save on.
- 5:24And because it's not only renewables,
- 5:28it's also about energy efficiency and water efficiency because to produce water,
- 5:33you need energy.
- 5:34So,
- 5:35um starting this um basic behavioral changes to the small solution then building on this little bigger solution.
- 5:44And then in the end,
- 5:45uh it's renewables,
- 5:47that's sort of the,
- 5:49the route.
- 5:50It seems to me what you're saying is that a lot of what we're looking for is to educate people to the some of the solutions,
- 5:57some of the processes,
- 5:59uh some of the habits that we currently have that we probably should modify so that we're using less fossil fuels and you know,
- 6:07walking and biking instead of jumping in our car.
- 6:10Uh The city is indeed as,
- 6:12as a very,
- 6:12very robust um uh system uh for,
- 6:16for public transportation and it's getting stronger and,
- 6:20and more uh widespread every day.
- 6:23Um When you get down to individual homeowners and people who live in the city,
- 6:29what sort of programs,
- 6:30what sort of uh resources can the city offer a resident so they can make their house uh more sustainable as we go forward.
- 6:40It's a great question.
- 6:42And one of these programs,
- 6:43I actually lead the program called Home Improvement program.
- 6:47It's basic step.
- 6:49It's the beginning of the journey of saving energy and water at home.
- 6:54And you build from this program,
- 6:56you know,
- 6:56it's the first,
- 6:57it's a basic steps.
- 7:00So during the program,
- 7:02um it's a workshop.
- 7:05So it's one hour,
- 7:06one hour and a half,
- 7:07dependent on the group we have in the workshop sessions.
- 7:10And we talk about simple solution like uh behavior change.
- 7:14And also we give away items which help them right away,
- 7:19start saving on the energy.
- 7:21So basically,
- 7:22they save the energy and they also help to reduce the bills,
- 7:26they helping,
- 7:27you know,
- 7:27future generation and they have an overall global program to tackle that.
- 7:31What sort of,
- 7:32what sort of things are we talking about?
- 7:33We're talking about to be giving away uh led light bulbs where a strip and um smart power strip to cut the energy from the computers.
- 7:45And uh then the second part is the water conservation and water efficiency.
- 7:51So we talk about um a reduction of water through fluoride,
- 7:57changing your shower head to the efficient one,
- 8:00the toilets you can uh and also outdoor.
- 8:04What can they do for the irrigation and uh to while we're talking about it.
- 8:09City has my colleagues run two great programs.
- 8:13One is uh uh toilet credit program which uh city of West Palm Beach Office of Sustainability will give you up to 125 toilet credit for two of the toilets.
- 8:28So basically you need to be city of West Palm Beach residents.
- 8:31You need to be water customer.
- 8:32You need to an honor.
- 8:34You can go and buy efficient toilet,
- 8:36which is 1.28 gallons per flush and we will credit it to your water bill.
- 8:43That's fantastic.
- 8:44That's really great.
- 8:45So you just to jump aside,
- 8:47uh,
- 8:471.1 0.8 gallons of water.
- 8:511.281 0.28.
- 8:53What,
- 8:53what does an old toilet?
- 8:55So prior 1995 it used to be old standards and it's 3.5 gallons per minute or,
- 9:05you know,
- 9:06per flash.
- 9:07So basically,
- 9:08if you think about you take and shower once a day,
- 9:12yeah,
- 9:12every day,
- 9:13hopefully 10 minutes,
- 9:15right.
- 9:15Just think about it and you using 3.5 gallon a minute.
- 9:20So it's 35 gallon for 11 person shower,
- 9:23right?
- 9:23You switch that shower head to the efficient,
- 9:26which is 11.2 meaning you're using only 12 gallons of water per,
- 9:33you know,
- 9:33per one shower.
- 9:34So it's multiplies,
- 9:37it multiplies and you're saving water and you're saving money.
- 9:39Absolutely.
- 9:40So,
- 9:41the small things like that I'm teaching through this program,
- 9:44so,
- 9:44it's a,
- 9:45you know,
- 9:45basic step.
- 9:47That's cool.
- 9:48So all these things go into the home and not only you changing things inside the home,
- 9:53you're helping the resident to think about how they use resources.
- 9:58And that's a really big part of what you do.
- 10:02So,
- 10:02we have an entire department here at the city,
- 10:05uh the Office of Sustainability that is involved in things that are first of all to help conserve our natural resources,
- 10:14but also to educate people.
- 10:16There are lots of different programs.
- 10:17We've talked about several right now.
- 10:20What other programs can,
- 10:21can we get people involved in to save money to save resources and to also help with global warming?
- 10:30Well,
- 10:30we have,
- 10:31as you mentioned,
- 10:33Holy Department and each one of us have dedicated area which we focus in.
- 10:40We do have our biggest events coming up.
- 10:43It's on April 6th and it's uh it's called eo uh green and Wellness Expo to start and celebrate the earth months and earth days.
- 10:54It's April 22nd.
- 10:56So we do have its Expo of varieties of different programs and sources we have.
- 11:02So we encourage everyone to come to Science Cox Science Center on this day and will be given away resources,
- 11:10giving away the information and it's gonna be uh 50% off for the city of residence on this day.
- 11:16So you basically people can come and learn and actually sort of see things like electric cars and,
- 11:22and,
- 11:23and,
- 11:23and and energy saving products that are,
- 11:26that are at the,
- 11:27at the expo.
- 11:28Absolutely.
- 11:29So in other programs,
- 11:30we do have,
- 11:31as you mentioned,
- 11:32a electric cars we do have uh usually it's in September,
- 11:36it's called Drive electric.
- 11:38So that is export to showcase different uh variety of uh it,
- 11:45we did it in partnership with Science Center as well.
- 11:48So it's outside.
- 11:49So there is specific.
- 11:51So our office has a lot of different resources.
- 11:54We do have uh specific on the wild flowers,
- 11:59on the uh vegan.
- 12:01And what can you do?
- 12:02How can you reduce um irrigation,
- 12:06retrofit,
- 12:07uh nature trees,
- 12:10rain barrel.
- 12:11Uh That's,
- 12:13we have a lot of opportunities for people.
- 12:15That's fantastic.
- 12:16And that people can learn more about it by going to the city website.
- 12:21And I,
- 12:21if I'm not mistaken,
- 12:22it's W pb.org front slash sustainability or green or green.
- 12:30Well,
- 12:31that's a lot easier than sustainability go.
- 12:34And,
- 12:34and what other ways can people get in touch with you?
- 12:36I also,
- 12:38yes,
- 12:38that's the,
- 12:39they can go on our website.
- 12:40We do have social media,
- 12:42we have Instagram,
- 12:43Facebook,
- 12:44they can call us as well.
- 12:46So we are available for any of those questions is it's another thing I wanna come back it and it's important thing that we were talking about the program I usually run.
- 12:57So my program,
- 12:58it's three parts and usually the third part is the most important because it talks about uh the solutions and this is where we start,
- 13:06what city of West Palm Beach can offer.
- 13:08And I already mentioned we can offer toilet program,
- 13:11irrigation pilot program,
- 13:14uh different trees,
- 13:15rain barrels and home improvement.
- 13:17But also uh it is federal mm tax credits federal programs,
- 13:24county programs,
- 13:25which I wanna,
- 13:26you know,
- 13:27just a little bit touch on.
- 13:28Yeah,
- 13:28please just talk about it.
- 13:30So we know that um it is basically a,
- 13:37it's called Inflation Reduction Act in short Ira,
- 13:41which been passed a year ago.
- 13:43And in this uh Ira,
- 13:46we have a lot of um resources which,
- 13:50you know,
- 13:51companies and residents can utilize such as they could take advantage of the tax credits for any energy efficiency.
- 14:00For example,
- 14:01if they plan to,
- 14:02to,
- 14:02to do uh new uh windows or doors,
- 14:07which more efficient or um ac or things like that,
- 14:12new fridges and anything,
- 14:15what could help them save,
- 14:17you know,
- 14:17money,
- 14:18more efficient uh things they could take up to 30% of the um cost.
- 14:24So they need to file form.
- 14:27Then,
- 14:27for example,
- 14:28this year they bought it and then next year when they filing the tax return,
- 14:32uh they,
- 14:33they need to file a special form and you'll help them know what that form is.
- 14:37And I do pass along the resources I talk about also.
- 14:42Mm For people who struggle in this day bills,
- 14:46the county has a program who can help with the uh you know,
- 14:50bills uh that is a federal program for low income people who can also,
- 14:56they can utilize.
- 14:57I'm talking about all of these different credits and,
- 15:01uh,
- 15:01also e,
- 15:02uh,
- 15:03electric vehicles ev as we call them.
- 15:06Mm,
- 15:07you can take up to 7500,
- 15:09uh,
- 15:09from the dealership.
- 15:11Now,
- 15:11I know it's still,
- 15:13um,
- 15:13not so affordable but it,
- 15:15it's getting there.
- 15:16So I'm,
- 15:17I'm just giving the people information where to go,
- 15:21what else they can do and how,
- 15:24you know,
- 15:25in general be more aware.
- 15:27So they helping themselves and also everyone's around them.
- 15:31It's a win,
- 15:31win.
- 15:31Not only do you put money back in your pocket,
- 15:34you're also contributing to the health of our community and the world.
- 15:38So that's really,
- 15:39really great.
- 15:40What other things do we do?
- 15:41Do we need to talk about?
- 15:45I just want to encourage everyone to,
- 15:47you know,
- 15:48to come and join our programs and to be more aware and to be more interesting,
- 15:54stay aware and um like my boss say,
- 15:59what with your dollars.
- 16:01So when you trying to buy something just um turn around uh and see what is it made of or what is it came from?
- 16:11Right.
- 16:11Right.
- 16:12And the one thing I would like to do,
- 16:14I always like to close with this is that we have the opportunity here.
- 16:17We have an audience who's listening in,
- 16:19they're obviously interested in what we're talking about here.
- 16:22Um If you had the opportunity to deliver one important message to the residents of West Palm Beach about all the things that you do.
- 16:33What would that message be?
- 16:39Uh We all have only one planet so we all live in planet Earth.
- 16:46So we need to do anything and everything possible uh to stabilize the climate on our planet and the ways to do it is here,
- 16:57the solutions are here.
- 16:59We all in it together and we are trying to uh provide,
- 17:05you know,
- 17:05different programs and solutions.
- 17:08Because if we all uh we,
- 17:11we all will do it.
- 17:13We'll,
- 17:13you know,
- 17:14we'll,
- 17:14we'll win,
- 17:14we'll,
- 17:15we'll tackle that.
- 17:16Absolutely.
- 17:17Lara,
- 17:18thank you for joining us and thanks to the entire team and the sustainability department for everything you do for the city.
- 17:25Thank you.
- 17:26And thank you for listening to this podcast direct from City Hall in West Palm Beach,
