- 0:42SPEAKER_02: Hey guys, welcome back.
- 0:47SPEAKER_02: And I have a wonderful guest once again with me.
- 0:50SPEAKER_02: She is the CEO and founder of The Skin Consult.
- 0:54SPEAKER_02: And I can't wait to learn all about her, you know, her journey and all the great things.
- 0:59SPEAKER_02: So without further ado, I want to introduce you guys to Sajni Barot.
- 1:04SPEAKER_02: Welcome to the show, Sajni.
- 1:06SPEAKER_02: I'm so glad you're here.
- 1:08SPEAKER_01: Thank you, Ekta.
- 1:09SPEAKER_01: I'm so glad to be here.
- 1:10SPEAKER_01: I look forward to it.
- 1:11SPEAKER_02: Oh, likewise.
- 1:12SPEAKER_02: I'm so I, you know, I love just unique interviews and like, you know, I I just want to start from the beginning because I really want to learn like the whole journey and how you came up with the concept for the Skin Consult and um all the all the good stuff, the stories that uh, you know, went behind the brand.
- 1:30SPEAKER_01: Yes, absolutely.
- 1:32SPEAKER_01: Um, so you know, I'm Sajni Burrows, I'm the CEO founder, and you know, by background, I'm actually uh a doctor of pharmacy.
- 1:40SPEAKER_01: So uh went to pharmacy school, became a licensed pharmacist, um, and really started my career working in pharmaceutical industry.
- 1:49SPEAKER_01: And that's where, you know, I just started getting more and more into product development, um, clinical research and trials.
- 1:57SPEAKER_01: And, you know, as a pharmacist, like looking at the ingredients and all of that was like kind of like ingrained in my head and my training.
- 2:04SPEAKER_01: So it was just very natural for me to have that approach, even when it came to skincare.
- 2:10SPEAKER_01: Um yeah, so you know, with my um pharmaceutical background, you know, I basically worked on FDA-approved medications.
- 2:17SPEAKER_01: I worked on six different FDA launches, um, you know, phase three, phase four clinical trials, and really served as a medical director for these uh pharma companies to help uh launch and also market the products to physicians, healthcare institutions, and really um had a very scientific-driven role in my career.
- 2:41SPEAKER_01: And when I started to get more into skincare, just due to my own personal struggles with skin, about a decade ago, I realized how much of a wild, wild west the skincare industry is, meaning there's a lot of loose regulations.
- 2:55SPEAKER_01: Um and, you know, products that we we use on our body every single day are not technically FD approved, right?
- 3:02SPEAKER_01: They don't go through rigorous clinical trials of efficacy and safety um parameters.
- 3:08SPEAKER_01: And so when consumers are using these products, you know, we don't half the time know what's good or not good for us or what's even going to work for our skin type and our skin goals.
- 3:17SPEAKER_01: And so I really wanted to bring that scientific approach to the sit to the skincare industry that I felt like is missing.
- 3:23SPEAKER_01: And we're starting to see, you know, consumers demand that transparency and that level of um, you know, knowledge about what they're using on a day-to-day basis and really helping personalize skincare.
- 3:37SPEAKER_02: Yeah, and that's the, you know, for me, that's the very interesting part about your brand because um, I'm not gonna lie, when I first uh really got into skincare, I was very much curious about, well, when is somebody gonna come out with this, you know, almost like this uh approach that a lot of telehealth companies are taking with, you know, you can see a primary care provider, you know, and just your daily needs, right?
- 4:01SPEAKER_02: And so I was always curious, like, you know, how how is this gonna be done for skin?
- 4:05SPEAKER_02: Because it's such a unique organ and it's so hard to diagnose and um really kind of understand everyone's skin needs, right?
- 4:12SPEAKER_02: Over like a phone or just a virtual consult.
- 4:15SPEAKER_02: So I want to talk to you about that a little bit, you know, um, as we move into the interview about the hurdles and some of the troubleshooting you had to do on your end to really make it perfect.
- 4:24SPEAKER_02: Um and and, you know, all that.
- 4:26SPEAKER_02: So if you could shed some light on that, like the journey of creating the platform and, you know, uh just everything that went behind it.
- 4:34SPEAKER_01: Yes, absolutely.
- 4:36SPEAKER_01: So my goal when I when I started working on this platform was really to bring a data-driven approach to the skincare.
- 4:43SPEAKER_01: But like you said, you know, um, it is rather difficult sometimes to um diagnose or to even give like accurate personalized recommendations, even when you actually go see someone in person.
- 4:54SPEAKER_01: So, like when you go see a dermatologist in person, I mean, sure, you have acne, there's a standard couple of treatments that every dermatologist is gonna put you on.
- 5:02SPEAKER_01: There's no level of personalization there.
- 5:05SPEAKER_01: But when you come to looking at different like types of skincare products that you can use on a day-to-day basis, what type of moisturizer, what type of toners or serums and you know, sunscreens that you're gonna put on, each of them they're made very differently.
- 5:20SPEAKER_01: There's different um ingredients that they're using and formulations and so forth, that there's just it's there's no set standard, right?
- 5:30SPEAKER_01: So versus medical dermatology, like we know there's a handful of FD-approved medications for acne, like you know, that I can list on my two hands that are terrible for you.
- 5:45SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah.
- 5:46SPEAKER_01: And so I really wanted to bring a data-driven approach, but I wanted to combine that with the professional experience and expertise that a you know, an aesthetician or a dermatologist or a facial plastic surgeon brings to the table.
- 6:00SPEAKER_01: You know, um, there's plenty of platforms that you might have seen where you take a quiz and you will get your product shipped to you in the mail.
- 6:08SPEAKER_01: Maybe they make their own custom prescription for you, you know, and we all know some of those big brands out there and you know they serve a different purpose, but I think a majority of people are looking to use, you know, existing products on the market, but really understanding how to use them, what to use them for, and really speaking to an expert about that.
- 6:29SPEAKER_01: And so when I started building this, you know, we want we wanted to bring these professionals to this platform, let them join our platform, vet them, give them, you know, all the resources through our technology, um, our booking software and so forth, but then also our data-driven algorithm that we put together using published data of different skincare ingredients.
- 6:55SPEAKER_01: Um, so for example, salicylic acid.
- 6:57SPEAKER_01: You know, we looked at all the published data of salsylic acid and what that is good for, um, and how that got mapped into our quiz.
- 7:07SPEAKER_01: So we really built out that proprietary algorithm that is in built into our software.
- 7:12SPEAKER_01: So when you're doing the live consultation with a provider on the skin console platform, they're able to build an extremely personalized and curated skincare regimen for you that are using the brands that are on our platform.
- 7:27SPEAKER_01: So you might get a recommendation from brand A for your moisturizer.
- 7:33SPEAKER_01: You might get a recommendation for your sunscreen from brand B.
- 7:36SPEAKER_01: So we're really curating using that data-driven approach.
- 7:39SPEAKER_01: And it's not that every person is getting the same five products.
- 7:44SPEAKER_01: You know, it's it's really personalized to your skin based on the data that we collect or the quiz you took prior to your booking, and then also based on the experience of that professional.
- 7:54SPEAKER_01: So when you're talking to them, you know, there's that whole level of personalization that comes through by just talking to a professional too, right?
- 8:02SPEAKER_01: And allow you to take pictures too.
- 8:05SPEAKER_02: No, I I I absolutely, and I don't mean to interrupt you, but I I, you know, I absolutely agree with everything you said.
- 8:10SPEAKER_02: And one thing that I think is so unique that you're bringing up is this idea of already utilizing what's out there.
- 8:16SPEAKER_02: I mean, that's huge, right?
- 8:17SPEAKER_02: And that really sets you apart because in my eyes, I think that, you know, skincare brands come out with the best of intentions.
- 8:27SPEAKER_02: Like I am a huge advocate for all of the amazing entrepreneurs and the people that want to create skincare lines.
- 8:34SPEAKER_02: You know what I mean?
- 8:34SPEAKER_02: Because a lot of them are really great.
- 8:36SPEAKER_02: And and to have something like uh the skin consult where you're really giving them a chance to not only be seen by people who have real skin needs, but you know, or concerns, but really just kind of highlight that, hey, you know, you're right.
- 8:51SPEAKER_02: Like you said, this medical space is a gray area and we don't know all the rules and regulations.
- 8:57SPEAKER_02: And it's better to just, you know, it's it's better to make do with what we have and be, you know, make the most of it and to really kind of curate it and uh channel it to the right people than to completely negate all of these amazing brands, right?
- 9:11SPEAKER_02: You see what I'm saying?
- 9:12SPEAKER_02: Like it's um it's really this uh it's almost like you're you're doing uh a justice to the skincare industry in my eyes, you know.
- 9:21SPEAKER_01: Yes, yeah, and and and we are building this ecosystem of, you know, uh not just the professionals, the patients, but also these brands that are backed by science, you know, we we vet their products, we vet the brand, and we curate the best of the best product from each line that we partner with.
- 9:39SPEAKER_01: So, say for example, we're partner with one specific brand, um, we don't actually have all their products on our platform.
- 9:46SPEAKER_01: There's only maybe five products from the entire line because because after going through their ingredients, their studies that they have done with their products, those five are the best ones that we feel from their line that that we want to put on our platform.
- 10:00SPEAKER_01: So, you know, that way we want to make sure that our consumers are also given the best of the best out there.
- 10:06SPEAKER_01: And like you said, I think there's tons of great brands out there, and that's not the missing piece here.
- 10:12SPEAKER_01: The missing piece is helping our consumers understand there's a lot of chaos out there, lots of products out there.
- 10:19SPEAKER_01: I'm I'm getting marketed about everything every single day.
- 10:23SPEAKER_01: Help me simplify this, right?
- 10:25SPEAKER_01: And that's what we're helping with.
- 10:27SPEAKER_02: No, absolutely.
- 10:28SPEAKER_02: And I think that's brilliant, like truly brilliant.
- 10:30SPEAKER_02: I mean, I think, you know, from what I noticed, especially on social media platforms, uh, you know, TikTok being one of the biggest ones that really concerns me is that there's a lot of, obviously, we already know this already, there's a lot of misinformation, but there's also a lot of influence that's really uh dictating what people are buying and when they're buying it in terms of like months, in terms of like, you know, time of year.
- 10:54SPEAKER_02: And those things concern me because, you know, I'm not gonna lie, I was putting together this curated list that we just uh published for skincare and just everything, right?
- 11:02SPEAKER_02: Makeup and everything.
- 11:03SPEAKER_02: And I was sitting there thinking to myself, I'm like, yeah, winter skincare is totally different than summer skincare and fall skincare.
- 11:09SPEAKER_02: And you need someone who knows what they're talking about, who knows the data, the research to guide you, you know, like everybody's not gonna have the eczema level dry skin in the winter.
- 11:19SPEAKER_02: Some people are just in between.
- 11:21SPEAKER_02: So those kind of questions that come up naturally and organically in a consumer's mind.
- 11:26SPEAKER_02: I think having something like the skin consult is just the biggest asset because they can go directly to you guys, you know, it's like, hey, my skin's drier.
- 11:34SPEAKER_02: What do I do?
- 11:34SPEAKER_02: You know?
- 11:35SPEAKER_02: So I like that.
- 11:36SPEAKER_02: I like that a lot.
- 11:38SPEAKER_01: Yes, yeah.
- 11:39SPEAKER_01: I think uh one of the key messages that I am very um driven to spread in the world is that skincare is a journey, and many people don't realize that, especially um, you know, when it comes to just, you know, even your day-to-day skincare regimen, people tend to just use the same thing over like the whole year or even for years, they just kind of are all they'll they'll switch out something just like blindly because someone recommended it or they saw it on social media, some blogger talked about it.
- 12:10SPEAKER_01: But you know, really optimizing your regimen um is really key, which a lot of people don't realize that.
- 12:18SPEAKER_01: And, you know, I will I like to take the approach of really building regimens that are targeting different mechanisms of action.
- 12:25SPEAKER_01: And, you know, of course, you're a healthcare professional yourself, so you understand how that works, right?
- 12:30SPEAKER_01: That you want to target your concerns, your goals by using various ingredients that are gonna target those things, you know, uh complementary style, right?
- 12:40SPEAKER_01: So often I see in these um in many people is that they're kind of using one thing and thinking like, well, I've been using it for six months, I'm not seeing any results, you know?
- 12:50SPEAKER_01: And that that's because the approach they're taking is very different.
- 12:54SPEAKER_01: They're not building on that.
- 12:56SPEAKER_01: It's not, it's not that you just use that one thing.
- 12:58SPEAKER_01: You kind of have to build a regimen of things that work simultaneously together, and you're gonna have a much better response and much faster response.
- 13:06SPEAKER_01: So, um, and and you know, it's an art, right?
- 13:09SPEAKER_01: Like to try to put that all together.
- 13:11SPEAKER_01: Um, you know, we we don't want people to just kind of trial and error and try different products versus, you know, um, we want to help them really put together this data-driven regimen.
- 13:23SPEAKER_01: And based on the experience of the professionals, you know that the five, six products that now you are recommended to use, you use it consistently, you have access to your professional to ask your questions as you go through your journey.
- 13:34SPEAKER_01: And that way you're just able to get to your goals very much fast versus just kind of figuring out like on your own as you're going.
- 13:42SPEAKER_01: And and that's kind of how I got into this myself because I went through this struggle myself years ago when I was having problems with my own skin.
- 13:51SPEAKER_02: Yeah, no, I read that on your um on the website, by the way.
- 13:54SPEAKER_02: The website is amazing.
- 13:56SPEAKER_02: And for everyone listening, uh, you can definitely go on there and explore.
- 13:59SPEAKER_02: But if you read a little bit into the backstory of the brand, it's it's really intriguing and and very, very um, it hits home, I think, for a lot of people because you know, Sajny, like you went through it, like you said, with the multiple products and it was just worsening your skin.
- 14:14SPEAKER_02: And it's like that, I feel like is a story that resonates with so many consumers, you know, especially uh in the last, I think, two or three years, you know, skincare has really taken off.
- 14:24SPEAKER_02: So I'd love for you to elaborate on that.
- 14:26SPEAKER_02: Like tell us a little bit more about that.
- 14:27SPEAKER_02: Like how did that, you know, what was that like?
- 14:29SPEAKER_02: And you know, what really led to that kind of skin sensitivity you were experiencing after all those products?
- 14:35SPEAKER_01: Yeah, oh my gosh.
- 14:36SPEAKER_01: So I, you know, when I moved, um at that point, I had just recently moved actually from Chicago, where I was I grew up, to down in the south to Mississippi, which is a very different place with in terms of climate and other ways too.
- 14:51SPEAKER_01: But, you know, just the fact that it was very humid here and I think just hormonal changes I was having at that stage in my life, stress, things like that, um, was really starting to affect my skin.
- 15:03SPEAKER_01: And I started having breakouts that I never did before.
- 15:07SPEAKER_01: Um, you know, I I felt like my skin was just starting to look very dull.
- 15:11SPEAKER_01: I was kind of, you know, nearing more into my late late 20s.
- 15:15SPEAKER_01: So, you know, I think that's when you really start to see some of those early signs of aging.
- 15:20SPEAKER_01: And that's when I realized, like, well, my skin's looking dull, you know, I'm starting to see some fine lines, but more importantly, it was the it was that lack of luster, the hyperpigmentation I was experiencing from the breakouts that led me to first try to stop these breakouts, but then also now trying to fix all these dark spots and like the dullness.
- 15:40SPEAKER_01: And I was just like overdoing it.
- 15:42SPEAKER_01: Like I would go to Sephora, for example, and just buy a lot of the hottest products that were on the market, like those peels that are so popular, um, a bunch of other serums using different moisturizers.
- 15:56SPEAKER_01: I mean, I racked up my like Sephora points very quickly.
- 15:59SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 16:01SPEAKER_01: And and yeah, I became the VIB Rouge status very quickly.
- 16:05SPEAKER_01: And I even went to locally, like, I went here to dermatologist, I went to Medspa, get some facials, but you know, I just wasn't helping.
- 16:12SPEAKER_01: Like everyone was giving me different types of things and recommendations, and I didn't think that they quite understood my skin type.
- 16:20SPEAKER_01: They didn't know understand like how to fix, like, you know, this um Indian woman, like her skin is going through like this hyperpigmentation phase, like how to fix that.
- 16:31SPEAKER_01: And you know, I mean, the solutions that were given were not the right ones for me at that point.
- 16:37SPEAKER_01: So um that's when I was like, I don't know what to do.
- 16:42SPEAKER_01: I mean, I consulted even I had friends that are dermatologists and they're like sending them pictures.
- 16:46SPEAKER_01: I'm like, hey, what do I do?
- 16:48SPEAKER_01: Like, I was having a lot of sensitivity because of overdoing it.
- 16:52SPEAKER_01: And I mean, I guess, you know, the one thing was that I had to stop doing everything I was doing, you know, and really had to scale back and understand like, well, I need to now find a way to repair the barrier that has been compromised, but then slowly work into like fixing it the right way.
- 17:08SPEAKER_01: So finally, you know, after a lot of trial and error, I did find an aesthetician that really got it and understood my skin.
- 17:16SPEAKER_01: And, you know, to this day I still go to her for my facials.
- 17:20SPEAKER_01: So um Yeah, no, once you find a good one, you keep them, you know, once you find a good one.
- 17:26SPEAKER_01: Yeah, and it took me a while to get there, right?
- 17:29SPEAKER_01: So, so that's when I personally got into skincare a lot more and started to read up on the data behind various active ingredients and the doses, like meaning the percentages.
- 17:40SPEAKER_01: Um, that's one of the things, a lot of things you don't find in skincare products is that what percentage of active ingredients are in there um are never disclosed because you know they don't have to.
- 17:51SPEAKER_01: And then they, when you ask them, they they call it it's proprietary.
- 17:55SPEAKER_01: So, you know, because it's not to be disclosed, it's sometimes hard to tell, like, okay, I'm using a glycolic acid toner, but one glycolic acid toner is gonna have 10% while another one's gonna have 2%, but the consumer doesn't know the difference.
- 18:10SPEAKER_01: So, how do you know like what how to even use it or what skin type can use 10% versus 2%?
- 18:17SPEAKER_01: And that's where, you know, I think um when I started to really get more into it, I realized like there has to be a better way to get people to find their perfect skincare routines.
- 18:28SPEAKER_01: Um, and then I started seeing there were a bunch of apps that were coming out that would allow you to take a quiz and then you could see a bunch of recommendations they're giving you.
- 18:37SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 18:38SPEAKER_01: And, you know, I thought that that was, you know, still not solving the problem because you're not getting to speak to someone.
- 18:44SPEAKER_01: It's very black and white, and our skin is not black and white, it's very personalized.
- 18:49SPEAKER_01: Um, and it's a gray zone, right?
- 18:51SPEAKER_02: So think about, you know, it's a such a great point, what you're saying, really.
- 18:56SPEAKER_02: I mean, I I really love that you're saying this because think of like, you know, like we say things like, you know, it takes a village to raise a child, it takes a village to do this, but it's like with our health, it takes a village to figure out sometimes what's wrong with the, you know, our health.
- 19:12SPEAKER_02: That's why we get second opinions.
- 19:14SPEAKER_02: That's why we go to multiple doctors.
- 19:16SPEAKER_02: We try to get this well-rounded idea of like what's really going on.
- 19:21SPEAKER_02: And I cannot tell you, honestly, um, you know, between you and I, I've I haven't really said this on air, but like I have had before skincare anarchy even started, I cannot tell you how many people reached out to me um that were like fellow influencers or just people, and they were like, Oh my god, my skin is going nuts.
- 19:37SPEAKER_02: I review all these products and I don't know what's wrong, but I've got these bumps everywhere, and it's not acne and it's not, and I used to be like, listen, this is what I do know.
- 19:47SPEAKER_02: And I I exactly what you just described, but as far as like the the skin consult, like you guys go through this like research and you know what I mean, like you read up behind the ingredients.
- 19:56SPEAKER_02: That's what I was doing for just friends, because it was like, yeah, it takes so much work and research.
- 20:02SPEAKER_02: And so that's so it's so key, you know, to highlight that in this industry is that it's not just about, okay, Sephora launched a brand new, you know, like five new skincare products.
- 20:13SPEAKER_02: I need all of them.
- 20:14SPEAKER_02: No, you need someone to tell you what is actually going on with your skin.
- 20:18SPEAKER_02: And I and I really, really want to go back to that point that you brought up about being an Indian woman and being a woman of color.
- 20:24SPEAKER_02: I completely obviously release, you know, and um I can tell you that hyperpigmentation is one of our biggest concerns, right?
- 20:31SPEAKER_02: So it's like, you know, when we experience hyperpigmentation, it's not the same thing as Caucasian skin experiencing it.
- 20:37SPEAKER_02: So it's gonna need a different approach.
- 20:39SPEAKER_02: You need to have um products that are targeting those melanocytes and that they're targeting the, you know, like those specific areas in very like specific molecular pathways.
- 20:50SPEAKER_02: And that's something that you do not see in this industry.
- 20:52SPEAKER_02: So I think that's it's brilliant that you've you've created something that's so research-based.
- 20:58SPEAKER_01: Absolutely.
- 20:59SPEAKER_01: And and you know, our our platform, of course, it's it's open to everyone, but majority of our patients have been people of color.
- 21:07SPEAKER_01: And and I I think dark spots hyperpigmentation is the number one concern we see the most, like, because that is what we struggle with.
- 21:15SPEAKER_01: And it is hard to find products that are really effective.
- 21:19SPEAKER_01: Um, and often, you know, you'll find that well, it's like, well, you know, I recommend using a retinol and a hydroquinone or something like that and call it a day.
- 21:29SPEAKER_01: But that's not enough.
- 21:30SPEAKER_01: I mean, first of all, you know, you can use that forever, hydroquinone, for example, right?
- 21:36SPEAKER_01: Number two, not everyone wants to use those products, you know, and and that's a whole nother debate, right?
- 21:41SPEAKER_01: But, you know, uh, you know, people don't want to use that.
- 21:43SPEAKER_01: And in fact, we get people that have been put on prescriptions, even for the acne.
- 21:48SPEAKER_01: And acne is a medical condition.
- 21:51SPEAKER_01: So I do believe that they should be on prescriptions when they need to be on.
- 21:54SPEAKER_01: But many are then looking to get off of those antibiotics because they want to really optimize their routine.
- 22:00SPEAKER_01: But often, you know, they're just given these prescriptions and that's it.
- 22:03SPEAKER_01: There's no other recommendation made on their routine, like what is your regimen that you're going to use on a day-to-day basis?
- 22:11SPEAKER_01: So with this platform, you know, we can really help to curate that while, you know, helping you with even your medical dermatology, uh, like say if you're on prescriptions and you know, um, through our platform.
- 22:26SPEAKER_01: So I think consumers are, you know, looking for an easy way, you know, I think that's one thing that I want I wanted to make sure that our platform can do is that, like you said, you were doing the research for your friends, but that's very time consuming.
- 22:41SPEAKER_01: And I started doing that too after I started blogging about it on social media.
- 22:46SPEAKER_01: I would get people asking me questions about things, and I really was talking a lot about ingredients and skincare.
- 22:52SPEAKER_01: And so people started like with sending me links to Sephora, for example, whenever there was a sale, I would get those a lot.
- 22:58SPEAKER_01: Hey, I want to buy this product.
- 23:00SPEAKER_01: What do you think about the ingredients in this product?
- 23:03SPEAKER_01: It's like, you know what?
- 23:05SPEAKER_02: Are you gonna pay for my degree that's gonna tell me what I need to know?
- 23:10SPEAKER_02: I know, yeah.
- 23:11SPEAKER_01: Yeah, and so that's how it that actually was the bulb in my head that went off actually when I started getting those type of requests because I was like, well, this could be a business that I could, you know, do one day.
- 23:23SPEAKER_01: And then really wanted to figure out, well, you know, how do I turn this into a very easy and scalable business where, you know, I'm not sitting there reviewing someone's regimen and taking you know two hours of my time.
- 23:37SPEAKER_01: And I did that.
- 23:38SPEAKER_01: I actually did that for 20 people.
- 23:40SPEAKER_01: I I remember doing this right before COVID started, actually, the year before, like in 2019.
- 23:47SPEAKER_01: I started, I told a few friends about this, and when just the friends that would ask me for recommendations, I told them, hey, I'm thinking about something with personalized skincare.
- 23:57SPEAKER_01: And would you be down to take this quiz for me?
- 24:00SPEAKER_01: And I'm gonna put together your regimen for you.
- 24:03SPEAKER_01: And they were like, sure, you know, of course, it was a free service.
- 24:06SPEAKER_01: I mean, it took me two hours per person to do this, but I would put together this regimen based on ingredients, map out what it's gonna do for them, um, and then send them the links to purchase it from.
- 24:18SPEAKER_01: Of course, they were just links to online websites that sold those products.
- 24:22SPEAKER_01: But people really loved it.
- 24:24SPEAKER_01: And when I asked them, like, well, how much are you willing to pay for this type of service?
- 24:28SPEAKER_01: You know, I got like a broad range of number, but you know, kind of gave me my um, you know, that pilot of like knowing that this could be a business model.
- 24:37SPEAKER_01: And then that's when I decided to go more into this platform model to where, you know, let's get professionals onto a platform and using the data-driven approach, we can then, you know, have a much bigger impact than me, one person doing this one person at a time.
- 24:54SPEAKER_01: So that's how it all started.
- 24:56SPEAKER_01: Absolutely.
- 24:56SPEAKER_02: No, I love that.
- 24:57SPEAKER_02: I really love that.
- 24:58SPEAKER_02: And you know, here's the thing: I agree with you that you know, we need professionals, but it's also an it's also important to address that one type of professional is not going to have all the answers for skin concerns.
- 25:12SPEAKER_02: So you need, you know, you need the farm Ds, you need the MDs, you need the nurse practitioners and the, you know what I mean?
- 25:19SPEAKER_02: Like you need a this collaborative effort to go behind really assessing and understanding the skin, I think, at this juncture that we're at right now, you know, in our industry, because you know, like we said before, there's a lot of things that we don't know.
- 25:35SPEAKER_02: And one of the biggest concerns for me, I think, from a research standpoint, and I think this is very unique, and I would love to see the skin consult, like, you know, as you guys continue to grow, I would love to see you guys actually incorporate this is the idea of um, you know, doing some sort of a project where there's some research going on that is figuring out if you combine product, you know, ingredients X, Y, and Z, what is going to happen on a molecular level to where they're working together synergistically to combat things like hyperpigmentation or acne or um really, really dry skin, crack skin, you know, those kind of things, because that kind of research, such is not out there where people have combined multiple ingredients and looked at the molecular pathway, like maybe pick one pathway, right?
- 26:21SPEAKER_02: So there's like, you know, there's so many pathways, and I'm not gonna go crazy nuts, but like for everyone listening, there's, you know, for example, there's a map kinase pathway involved in almost every organ, and you know, that's one of the big ones.
- 26:32SPEAKER_02: And it's, you know, it's really at the at the center of how things and how cells are signaled to do what they're doing.
- 26:40SPEAKER_02: So if you take multiple ingredients and then just measure that, that's something I would like to see a lot more of in the skincare community, and especially from the medical side.
- 26:48SPEAKER_02: And to have brands such as you have the access and the support that's needed from the medical community to make that happen is something I, you know, we need that as a next step because you've got the platform, you've got the professionals, you guys are doing the right work.
- 27:02SPEAKER_02: And now it's like more about the industry really coming together and being like, okay, this is a brand that's got it, you know, got steps one, two, and three down.
- 27:10SPEAKER_02: You know, how can we do steps four, five, six, seven, eight, you know?
- 27:14SPEAKER_02: So I I really, really, really like um that not only have you created this beautiful platform, but it's this uh it's this open-end book, you know, that really can be added onto, I think, in my opinion, you know, in terms of like just more, more and more research, right?
- 27:28SPEAKER_02: More science.
- 27:29SPEAKER_01: So yeah, absolutely.
- 27:30SPEAKER_01: And you know, we're all about like really bringing beauty and science together.
- 27:34SPEAKER_01: And, you know, research is so central to me and my foundation that it's definitely something I want to grow um within this company and and and really have build it out into our backbone, which it is in a way, with with even the recommendations we're doing based on existing research out there, but then not using the data we are getting, the access to, like you said, professionals, um, the brands and so forth to now create more research of our own.
- 28:04SPEAKER_01: And um, you know, really understanding some of these um things, especially when it comes to you know mechanisms of action, but also looking at data uh clinically, like, you know, like you said, combining a few different things together and seeing uh at the you know molecular stage what happens, but also in clinical setting, what happens in terms of efficacy and safety, right?
- 28:25SPEAKER_01: So um a lot of brands, of course, we see like the big medical skincare lines that you know that are sold typically through doctors' offices, you know, they'll do some smaller studies for maybe one or two of the key products.
- 28:40SPEAKER_01: Um, and you know, that's the data we get.
- 28:44SPEAKER_01: But, you know, there's not a big mass level like data um database that's been built out for these skincare lines or skincare ingredients, um, almost like a registry of some sort, right?
- 28:57SPEAKER_01: It doesn't quite exist.
- 28:58SPEAKER_01: So, of course, we see that very much so in this in the medical world, but not so much in the skincare world.
- 29:04SPEAKER_01: And my vision is really to use the uh ecosystem that we're building here to come out with more and more data points and also really, I mean, raising the bar in the industry, you know, because that's what we want to do is we want to get brands to question and want to build better products themselves too.
- 29:23SPEAKER_02: I absolutely love that.
- 29:24SPEAKER_02: And also I want to just recommend to you, um, very, very early on in the podcast, I had interviewed the founder of the Good Face project, and they are literally a registry of in just ingredients.
- 29:36SPEAKER_02: Like it's crazy cool how um intricate their database is.
- 29:39SPEAKER_02: And I would love to see the skin consult kind of collab with them because it's literally just like I'm telling you, like every ingredient, everything you can imagine, and they just have it like like categorized, you know what I mean?
- 29:51SPEAKER_02: So like it's a great resource for your medical professionals to even like you know, reference and when they're like uh consulting with, you know, uh what do you call it?
- 30:00SPEAKER_01: Um Yeah, I know.
- 30:03SPEAKER_02: I'm at a loss for words right now, but yeah, like um, you know, when you have um actual patients and then consulting them and then you know, uh being able to reference something.
- 30:12SPEAKER_02: So I mean that's just an example, but yeah, I completely echo what you just said, and I I think that it's a very, very difficult, it's a difficult road that you've picked, honestly.
- 30:20SPEAKER_02: I mean, it's very um you're pioneering, you're pioneering something very important, and I think that's definitely a journey that you know we need to take.
- 30:28SPEAKER_02: And I'm so glad that you're taking it because we need that.
- 30:32SPEAKER_01: Yes, thank you.
- 30:33SPEAKER_01: Yes, it's definitely something that's innovative and you know, um, beauty tech that the that category has, you know, of course been growing in the last few years, but we're still at an early infancy stage of that in terms of innovation.
- 30:50SPEAKER_01: Um, and you know, I know the Good Face Project, I know their founder well, like, you know, like they are definitely um, you know, one of those that are helping to pioneer and really they're helping brands directly by formulating the right products and understanding regulations of different countries and so forth.
- 31:09SPEAKER_01: So um like the their APIs or their database can be very much um complementary to our, which is more consumer-facing uh solution.
- 31:19SPEAKER_01: Um and you know, we really need the skincare brands, but also other companies that are coming out with more innovative solutions to start working together that you know make this personalized skincare very easy to approach and make it accessible.
- 31:39SPEAKER_01: And uh through this marketplace, you know, we hope to do that with the with not just the skincare side, but we're also gonna be uh moving um into in-person connection as well.
- 31:49SPEAKER_01: So so you know, services such as your materials and facials and all of that, that is also very much a part of your skincare solution.
- 31:57SPEAKER_02: So yeah, that's really great news.
- 32:00SPEAKER_02: I love that.
- 32:01SPEAKER_02: No, I think I think that's a really uh great next step for you guys.
- 32:05SPEAKER_02: I mean, honestly, here's the thing like I there's so many medical professionals out there, and I really urge them to connect with founders like you because here's the thing, you know, you can be a doctor and you can be doing um research and clinical trials and having all this data, but you have to get that data in the right hands.
- 32:20SPEAKER_02: And unfortunately, you know, we live in a world where just putting it up on PubMed is not good enough.
- 32:26SPEAKER_02: You know what I mean?
- 32:26SPEAKER_02: It's just not doing it.
- 32:28SPEAKER_02: So you have to connect with um founders such as yourself that do have that tech side, you know, kind of nailed down and you're able to reach an audience in a very, you know, efficacious way.
- 32:38SPEAKER_02: And so I really urge if there's any medical practitioners uh listening right now, uh definitely contact uh Saji because that would be that's really what we have to do, you know, as not only uh, you know, the beauty industry, but as medical community, we have to really come together because the skin is like we said, it's a very gray area and it's hard to have one size fits all.
- 33:00SPEAKER_02: And I don't think that's ever gonna happen, to be honest, with skincare and you know, or skin health in general.
- 33:06SPEAKER_02: So it, you know, the more we can collaborate, the better.
- 33:09SPEAKER_02: I mean, I very early on in the podcast, I remember I had this like outlandish idea and I was like trying to pitch it to anyone who would come on the show because I was like, well, what if we had companies just donate to this mass fund for research?
- 33:23SPEAKER_02: You know what I mean?
- 33:24SPEAKER_02: Like for skin concerns.
- 33:25SPEAKER_02: Like, what if we just did that?
- 33:27SPEAKER_02: Because that's just data that we can all access.
- 33:29SPEAKER_02: And yeah, but really what I was saying is the essence of what you're creating here, right?
- 33:34SPEAKER_02: It's like that's what I was really getting to is this idea of like, let's make it more personalized, let's make it something that people will go there and feel like they're being taken care of and they're not just being put into a group or like, you know what I mean, just a demographic or like uh whatever.
- 33:49SPEAKER_02: You know, everyone wants that feeling.
- 33:51SPEAKER_02: We we look for that every time we go to the doctor.
- 33:53SPEAKER_02: So yeah, I I think I think it's absolutely brilliant.
- 33:57SPEAKER_02: And so I want to actually, I want to I want to move on.
- 34:00SPEAKER_02: I want to ask you a few uh just technical questions I have because um I know that you know, in terms of IT and just putting something like this together is very, you know, I I can't even imagine how how much work goes into that.
- 34:13SPEAKER_02: So um when you first started off and you really wanted to dive in, like, you know, what were some of the steps you had to take to create such a, you know, to create this uh web-based platform?
- 34:25SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 34:26SPEAKER_01: Absolutely.
- 34:27SPEAKER_01: And, you know, I think that's one of the journeys that I took as a non-technical founder myself.
- 34:32SPEAKER_01: That was um a rather steep learning curve for me, um, you know, um, to understand even the world of like technology, right?
- 34:40SPEAKER_01: Um and and, you know, some of the things that I really had to understand more of like was the tech tech side of things, which is like what type of tech stack we need, what type of what type of developers do I even need, right?
- 34:53SPEAKER_01: To build this out.
- 34:54SPEAKER_01: Like I had this vision that I wanted to create, you know, mapped out on a piece, a piece of paper.
- 35:00SPEAKER_01: I literally had drawings and uh in a notebook, you know, that I still have them today.
- 35:04SPEAKER_01: Um, and you know, I'm like, I want this to come to life.
- 35:08SPEAKER_01: And, you know, I have, you know, basically compiled this data into an algorithm.
- 35:14SPEAKER_01: Now I want to put this into, you know, code basically to help this, you know, be part of a new system and create the software where we can allow people to set up profiles, book appointments, and things like that.
- 35:26SPEAKER_01: You know, I I I like to call it make an Uber for skincare.
- 35:30SPEAKER_01: So it was literally a lot of just doing research on my own, like reading up articles about, you know, how to build a MVP, how to build software, you know, and especially as a non-technical founder, I mean, I knew that I needed some technical advice, you know.
- 35:46SPEAKER_01: Um, so I want I had to make sure, like, you know, I I did bring in someone that was, you know, uh had some experience building softwares.
- 35:54SPEAKER_01: And so very early on, you know, I brought on an advisor, a tech advisor who I met through a mutual friend that had his own startup.
- 36:02SPEAKER_01: And, you know, um, he obviously um is a software engineer himself.
- 36:07SPEAKER_01: So he came on um as a early like advisor to really guide, um, but also help, you know, put together a team to start building the our our you know platform.
- 36:20SPEAKER_01: And um not just that, but you know, I obviously also wanted to bring in someone with the skincare experience, not just skincare, but skin experience.
- 36:28SPEAKER_01: So that wouldn't be a dermatologist.
- 36:30SPEAKER_01: So, you know, I brought in a dermatologist to also, you know, provide more as a consulting um on, you know, this whole concept, the algorithm, the quiz that we, you know, have people take uh that collects the data and really map that all out.
- 36:49SPEAKER_01: And so what that was really those two people I would say were very crucial for me to have on my team in this early day um when I first started building on this, um, you know, and then we just started going into the build of it.
- 37:04SPEAKER_01: And while we were even just building the this platform, one of the key things I really wanted to do was also test this in a um like a beta stage, which is like, you know, yeah, beta testing.
- 37:16SPEAKER_01: Can we can we do this?
- 37:18SPEAKER_01: Are people liking this without like the fancy technology, right?
- 37:22SPEAKER_01: Like, so let's not even think about the algorithm, the fancy booking software, all that, the quiz.
- 37:28SPEAKER_01: Let's just see, like, are people just wanting to do this consultation, get recommendations from a provider, and then purchase the products that have been recommended based on that?
- 37:40SPEAKER_01: And so we did that, like literally for a few months, we were doing this, those consultations just like through Zoom.
- 37:46SPEAKER_01: Like, you know, had a bunch of aestheticians that I contracted, um, you know, had had customers take a quiz through Google Forms uh and you know, kind of set them up manually.
- 37:57SPEAKER_01: And then, you know, they gave them recommendations that they were able to purchase them um through us because we um early on partnered with some brands very quickly.
- 38:07SPEAKER_01: So um I think those early uh wave of customers gave me a lot of um data points to understand what do they need and you know how can we really build our products to serve the needs of the customers.
- 38:25SPEAKER_01: So as we were building the platform, the technology, um, all that was very crucial and was taken into consideration.
- 38:32SPEAKER_01: And you know, I mean, since we launched in November of 2020, we've we have definitely gone through a bunch of changes since then too.
- 38:38SPEAKER_01: And we're still constantly, you know, um changing as as we kind of um you know see where the where you know people want to go with this, you know, we're adding more things to it.
- 38:50SPEAKER_01: Like I said, you know, we're build we're building this whole in-person connection now through a subscription model, and so a lot of that's coming down the pipe now.
- 38:58SPEAKER_01: So we're just constantly and you know, changing and innovating based on um the response from our customers.
- 39:07SPEAKER_01: And that was one of the biggest things that I I did very early on is taking customer feedback all the time and really using that to build our product.
- 39:17SPEAKER_02: Yeah, no, I I think that's very, very important.
- 39:20SPEAKER_02: And I I'm glad that you're doing it the right way, honestly.
- 39:23SPEAKER_02: And I think that, you know, um it's very important to have this constant communication with the consumer because, you know, I think with skin, and this is very different, you know, I'm not a dermatologist, but just being in other areas of medicine, I can tell you like with any organ of the body, no treatment responds the same in a person.
- 39:44SPEAKER_02: So being able to come back to that patient and ask them, what were the, you know, what did you feel?
- 39:49SPEAKER_02: What were the side effects?
- 39:50SPEAKER_02: Did you have any side effects?
- 39:52SPEAKER_02: All of those questions that we just naturally ask as medical practitioners or, you know, nurses or anyone who's interacting with patients, those need to come out into the world of aesthetics and beauty because that practice, that those good practices need to be like, you know, implemented at every level because the consumers are really the the real data.
- 40:13SPEAKER_02: That's the data, you know, and it's like you can gather all the in you know, in vitro analysis you have and the you know data points of a petri dish, you know, reacting to whatever.
- 40:24SPEAKER_02: But if you can't have a consumer tell you that this really worked, then you're not making something worthwhile, you know.
- 40:29SPEAKER_02: So it's like very, very important.
- 40:30SPEAKER_02: And I'm glad that, you know, you have that connection with your with your consumers and your customers because you know, that's how I think any medical practice grows, how any business grows.
- 40:40SPEAKER_02: And I and I really urge everyone out there to really check out the skin consult.
- 40:44SPEAKER_02: Um, I also wanted to mention your prices are amazing, by the way, Sajni.
- 40:48SPEAKER_02: You've really made this very accessible and I absolutely love that.
- 40:51SPEAKER_02: I mean, you know, the rates are very like doable for everybody, you know, and I think that's so important because many of these like telehealth companies you'll see like$200 for a consult.
- 41:02SPEAKER_02: And it's like 19-year-olds don't have$200 for a consult.
- 41:07SPEAKER_02: You know what I mean?
- 41:08SPEAKER_02: Like, there's just no way.
- 41:09SPEAKER_02: So, like, for example, for everyone listening, like, you know, you can get a consult um for$40 for 30 minutes, and that's very, very good.
- 41:17SPEAKER_02: That's like optimal pricing, you know what I mean?
- 41:20SPEAKER_02: So um, I really I like that.
- 41:23SPEAKER_01: Thank you.
- 41:24SPEAKER_01: Yes, and that also includes product credit.
- 41:26SPEAKER_01: So you get$20 to use towards your regimen.
- 41:29SPEAKER_01: And so we've really, yeah.
- 41:31SPEAKER_01: So, you know, like you said early on, you know, having different levels of professionals is important.
- 41:35SPEAKER_01: So we have not just aestheticians, but we got physicians, we got like dermatology PAs, and we also have some pharmacists.
- 41:43SPEAKER_01: So, like, you know, you are able to access different people based on your needs, and the price points are different for each of those professions.
- 41:49SPEAKER_01: But, you know, yeah, that was one of the things I really wanted is that having an an affordable price point, but also making it where, you know, you're getting quality as well.
- 42:00SPEAKER_01: So, you know, we do have a very robust training program as well.
- 42:03SPEAKER_01: So, of course, you know, all these professionals they have their own, like, you know, foundation of training that they are, you know, licensed with.
- 42:09SPEAKER_01: But then we also have a very pretty robust uh universities set up within our platform where professionals can watch a bunch of tutorials that we have um either created on our own, but we also have some through our brands that we are partnered with.
- 42:25SPEAKER_01: So, you know, there's training on uh understanding ingredients or you know how to tackle acne or understanding different classes of medications or skincare products like retinoids and things like that.
- 42:38SPEAKER_01: Um, because even like you said, you know, every profession is very different.
- 42:41SPEAKER_01: So, like you ask one dermatologist one thing, you ask another dermatologist another thing, sometimes you'll get very different answers, right?
- 42:48SPEAKER_01: And and that's okay.
- 42:49SPEAKER_01: But you know, we did want to make sure that there was some level of quality through the platform as well.
- 42:54SPEAKER_01: Um, you know, marketplaces, you know, you can get some really good people.
- 42:59SPEAKER_01: Sometimes you get not so good, you know, depending on that.
- 43:02SPEAKER_01: So I wanted to make sure that the skin consult had some level of quality built into these uh professionals as well.
- 43:08SPEAKER_01: And they really the providers love it because they're getting a lot of this these resources for free to keep up with like new information that we get, um, that gets added to the program.
- 43:21SPEAKER_01: So um that is something I just want to make sure, like, you know, we're uh making it accessible, but we're also making it very high quality as well.
- 43:29SPEAKER_01: And that is really something that I make sure is like ingrained into our platform and into our core business.
- 43:36SPEAKER_02: Yeah, no, I I think that, you know, that's definitely something like that cannot be compromised with is the quality, you know, at especially at this stage and how uh how cluttered the space is for skincare.
- 43:49SPEAKER_02: I mean, you know, the more the more quality, the more curation we get, the better.
- 43:55SPEAKER_02: Honestly, you know, it's it's getting to a point now where literally any With a you know, with a mouth is recommending products and it's just getting not it's turning into nonsense, you know what I mean?
- 44:07SPEAKER_02: It's really turning into nonsense.
- 44:09SPEAKER_02: And it's like I think the other day I saw somebody I it was something ridiculous, you know what I mean?
- 44:14SPEAKER_02: Like it was just something so ridiculous, and it was like, I don't know who starts these trends, but like we have got to get people educated at this point because the trends that I'm seeing related to skincare now are just horrendous.
- 44:28SPEAKER_02: Like the at-home, you know, um, what do you call it?
- 44:32SPEAKER_02: Um, like extractions and the at-home popping of your giant, you know, someone will have this big sore on their face and they're trying to pop it at home.
- 44:40SPEAKER_02: And I'm like, what are you doing?
- 44:42SPEAKER_02: Like that's not, you know, and just to get TikTok views, like that kind of thing.
- 44:46SPEAKER_02: So it's like really, you know, this is the time to, I think one of my favorite quotes is by, you know, Marie Curie, and she said, This is not the time to fear, but it's the time to understand.
- 44:56SPEAKER_02: And that really applies to the skincare industry at this point because you we have to understand the science.
- 45:01SPEAKER_02: We have to have people such as yourself who are becoming entrepreneurs.
- 45:06SPEAKER_02: I love seeing uh women in STEM careers turning into entrepreneurs in the beauty industry because I feel like we come at it with a totally different viewpoint.
- 45:15SPEAKER_02: You know what I'm saying?
- 45:16SPEAKER_02: Like that data-driven mindset that you were talking about, like we need more of that, you know.
- 45:21SPEAKER_02: So to for you to create a brand, you're gonna come at it from a totally different angle and understanding than somebody who hasn't had that training in a STEM career.
- 45:30SPEAKER_02: You know what I mean?
- 45:31SPEAKER_02: So it's like a very, very unique approach.
