Latest / Stugotz and Company / Set 2: Drafting Daejon Love (w/ Field Yates)
Transcript
- 0:21Speaker 1: The football season is upon us. The fantasy football season
- 0:25Speaker 1: is upon us. And our buddy Field Yates joins us.
- 0:27Speaker 1: He was a basketball correspondent for a couple of weeks
- 0:30Speaker 1: back when the Knicks were making a championship run. He's
- 0:33Speaker 1: a big-time Celtics fan. How do you feel about the
- 0:35Speaker 1: Celtics offseason so far, Field?
- 0:39Speaker 2: Yeah, so honestly, when I'm debating between B.
- 0:41Speaker 3: John Robinson and Jameer Gibbs for the first pick over
- 0:43Speaker 3: all this year in fantasy drafts, I lean ever so
- 0:46Speaker 3: slightly towards B.
- 0:47Speaker 2: John Robinson. I'm sorry, what was the question you asked?
- 0:50Speaker 1: How do you feel about the Celtics putting Jalen Brown
- 0:55Speaker 1: on the Sixers and making that team so attractive that
- 0:58Speaker 1: LeBron James decided, hey, you know what?
- 1:00Speaker 4: I want to go to Philadelphia.
- 1:02Speaker 3: So can I tell you why I might have had
- 1:04Speaker 3: the most– Placid reaction of any Celtics fan to the
- 1:08Speaker 3: Jalen Brown trade.
- 1:09Speaker 2: There's one specific reason.
- 1:10Speaker 3: Why? The Jalen Brown trade took place as my wife
- 1:14Speaker 3: was going into labor with our third child.
- 1:17Speaker 4: Nice.
- 1:17Speaker 2: So our third.
- 1:18Speaker 3: Child is born the day that the Jalen Brown trade
- 1:20Speaker 3: takes place. I mean, just all kinds of stuff happening
- 1:22Speaker 3: on that day, obviously. And I think my brain would
- 1:25Speaker 3: have processed the trade probably much more angrily under different circumstances.
- 1:31Speaker 3: I'm still disappointed and frustrated to this point. But I
- 1:34Speaker 3: have decided that... I don't get to be a fan
- 1:38Speaker 3: in football, right? You don't get that opportunity now when
- 1:40Speaker 3: you work in it. So for the Celtics, I'm going
- 1:43Speaker 3: to put blind faith and optimism into this team and
- 1:46Speaker 3: hope for the best and hope that my reaction, my
- 1:49Speaker 3: gut reaction, my second reaction, my third reaction, my 10th
- 1:53Speaker 3: reaction to the Jalen Brown.
- 1:54Speaker 2: Trade was just totally wrong.
- 1:56Speaker 5: And how is little Paul George Yates doing?
- 2:02Speaker 3: The irony is that our third daughter is named Tatum.
- 2:06Speaker 3: Not related to Jason Tatum, but a lot of people
- 2:09Speaker 3: made the joke after she was born, like, were you
- 2:11Speaker 3: preparing to name her Jalen until several.
- 2:13Speaker 2: Hours before she was born? And then you pivoted. Jalen
- 2:18Speaker 2: was on the long list. I will be honest on
- 2:20Speaker 2: that part.
- 2:21Speaker 1: Field, it is so funny with fantasy football season coming
- 2:24Speaker 1: up here. I have the second pick of the draft,
- 2:26Speaker 1: and I know you just addressed it, but that is
- 2:28Speaker 1: the big question. Gibbs or Robinson? Robinson or Gibbs? Mikey
- 2:32Speaker 1: is shaking his head saying it's not a big question.
- 2:34Speaker 1: There's a clear-cut number one.
- 2:35Speaker 6: Who is it?
- 2:37Speaker 7: No, I was just going to say it's easy for
- 2:39Speaker 7: you because you don't have to make the decision.
- 2:41Speaker 5: It's going to be made for you.
- 2:42Speaker 3: Right, right.
- 2:42Speaker 2: That's correct.
- 2:43Speaker 3: I was going to say the big takeaway is that
- 2:45Speaker 3: the best place to pick this year is number two overall, right?
- 2:49Speaker 3: Because Jameer Gibbs and B. John Robinson is a good argument.
- 2:51Speaker 3: You could argue for either of them as the lawyer
- 2:54Speaker 3: in court. Probably too much lawyer talk in sports recently
- 2:57Speaker 3: with this Clippers draft. situation but i have no issue
- 3:00Speaker 3: with so i i personally have bijan ranked one spot
- 3:03Speaker 3: ahead of jameer gibbs one and two but i had
- 3:07Speaker 3: a draft a couple of days ago where i got
- 3:09Speaker 3: the number one pick and i wound up taking jameer
- 3:11Speaker 3: gibbs the rationale for that just as a heads up
- 3:14Speaker 3: there were two things one i haven't had the chance
- 3:17Speaker 3: to draft jameer gibbs in any other league so far
- 3:19Speaker 3: i wanted to have some jameer gibbs in my portfolio
- 3:22Speaker 3: uh two i It's what we call a knockout league,
- 3:25Speaker 3: which is new at ESPN.
- 3:26Speaker 2: People may be familiar with this format.
- 3:29Speaker 3: The lowest scoring team each week gets eliminated from the league.
- 3:33Speaker 3: Their players go back into a free agency pool. Everybody
- 3:36Speaker 3: has $ 1, 000 of a free agent acquisition budget, and then
- 3:40Speaker 3: we do a blind bidding process each week for those players.
- 3:44Speaker 3: So if somebody has... Derrick Henry in week one, their
- 3:47Speaker 3: team puts up an absolute stinker. Derrick Henry and everybody
- 3:50Speaker 3: else is available. Jameer Gibbs has an easier early season
- 3:54Speaker 3: schedule than over B.
- 3:55Speaker 2: John Robinson.
- 3:56Speaker 3: So that was how I leaned towards Gibbs in this
- 3:59Speaker 3: knockout league. But over the past two years, worth noting
- 4:02Speaker 3: that Gibbs has more games with 20-plus fantasy points than Robinson.
- 4:06Speaker 2: Excuse me.
- 4:07Speaker 3: Robinson has more 20-plus games over the past two years.
- 4:10Speaker 3: than Jameer Gibbs, and he has fewer under-10-point games. So
- 4:14Speaker 3: he's been a little steadier of a ship over the
- 4:17Speaker 3: past couple of seasons.
- 4:20Speaker 4: Mikey, do you like the knockout league? Do you like
- 4:22Speaker 4: that format?
- 4:22Speaker 1: Because you're excited for fantasy football the entire offseason, and
- 4:26Speaker 1: then you're knocked out after a week, and.
- 4:28Speaker 4: All your players are available to the good teams. I mean.
- 4:31Speaker 5: Is this a safe space?
- 4:32Speaker 4: Yeah, it is.
- 4:33Speaker 5: Can I bare my soul? I'm not only in one.
- 4:36Speaker 5: I'm in one that's 32 teams.
- 4:38Speaker 4: Oh, wow.
- 4:39Speaker 2: Wow. You're a psycho. So that's a double knockout each week,
- 4:42Speaker 2: I'm assuming, right? Four.
- 4:43Speaker 5: Four teams get knocked out in the first few weeks.
- 4:46Speaker 3: Yeah. So I would say that the only thing that
- 4:48Speaker 3: I would say about the knockout leagues, I really enjoy them.
- 4:50Speaker 3: It's a different way to play. It's a different strategy, obviously.
- 4:55Speaker 3: I joke that in knockout leagues, if you're not last,
- 4:58Speaker 3: you're first, right? The inverse Ricky Bobby because– No matter
- 5:01Speaker 3: whether you finish 10 out of 12, as long as
- 5:03Speaker 3: you're not 12 out of 12, survive and advance. The
- 5:06Speaker 3: only way in which I do think it impacts my
- 5:08Speaker 3: brain is people ask me all the time, how many
- 5:11Speaker 3: leagues are you playing in this season? And that number
- 5:13Speaker 3: could begin at, you know, 20, 25. And then by
- 5:16Speaker 3: the halfway point of the season, if seven of those
- 5:19Speaker 3: are knockout leagues, it could be reduced dramatically. So from
- 5:22Speaker 3: an accounting standpoint, I can't decide how many I should
- 5:25Speaker 3: admit playing in at the beginning of the year.
- 5:28Speaker 1: Field, what are the two or three questions you are
- 5:30Speaker 1: getting most headed into this fantasy football season?
- 5:34Speaker 3: The first question is, who am I taking number one overall?
- 5:36Speaker 3: I said my piece there. The second question is some
- 5:39Speaker 3: form of sleeper or bust, which I think it sort
- 5:44Speaker 3: of depends on who your audience is when you answer
- 5:46Speaker 3: that question. I used to say that, I don't know,
- 5:48Speaker 3: maybe a decade or so ago, You could throw the
- 5:51Speaker 3: third receiver for the Ravens out there as a sleeper
- 5:54Speaker 3: and people would be like, oh, wow, man, like never
- 5:57Speaker 3: heard of that guy. Now you draw like, you know,
- 6:01Speaker 3: the third running back for the Cardinals and people are like,
- 6:04Speaker 3: he went in the eighth round of my keeper league
- 6:06Speaker 3: last week. So you got to dig a little bit
- 6:08Speaker 3: deeper than that, which is a byproduct of how popular
- 6:11Speaker 3: fantasy football is in just the NFL. So sleepers and
- 6:15Speaker 3: busts are always a very popular question. But the one
- 6:18Speaker 3: this year, the player this year that seems to be
- 6:20Speaker 3: generating the most heat is Christian McCaffrey. Are you in
- 6:23Speaker 3: or are you out on CMC? Who last year, you know,
- 6:27Speaker 3: we're talking about Jameer Gibbs and B. John Robinson as
- 6:29Speaker 3: the clear-cut.
- 6:29Speaker 2: One and two. CMC was 50 points better than those
- 6:34Speaker 2: guys last year.
- 6:35Speaker 4: I know I had him. He won me a title.
- 6:36Speaker 4: I mean, how about that?
- 6:37Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean, he was the best player in fantasy
- 6:39Speaker 3: football last year. He's been the best player in fantasy
- 6:41Speaker 3: football many times in his career. The question is, Can
- 6:45Speaker 3: you trust him to stay healthy for the second straight season?
- 6:48Speaker 3: He had 400 plus touches last year. He's 30 years old,
- 6:52Speaker 3: which for a running back is on the older side,
- 6:54Speaker 3: of course. And I, you know, I tend to think
- 6:59Speaker 3: that all players are injury risks.
- 7:00Speaker 2: It's football.
- 7:01Speaker 3: I understand that CMC has had a longer injury history
- 7:05Speaker 3: than guys like Bijan or Jameer Gibbs.
- 7:07Speaker 2: Where I land on it is this.
- 7:09Speaker 3: It depends on, like, how emotional you are of a
- 7:11Speaker 3: fantasy football player.
- 7:13Speaker 2: Because if you're the kind of person.
- 7:14Speaker 3: So let's just say, and I don't want to wish
- 7:16Speaker 3: this upon anybody, but if Christian McCaffrey gets hurt in
- 7:19Speaker 3: the fourth week of the season, people that drafted him
- 7:21Speaker 3: in the first round are going to say, God damn it,
- 7:23Speaker 3: I did it again.
- 7:24Speaker 2: I should have known better, right? Whereas, inversely... If Amon
- 7:29Speaker 2: Ross St.
- 7:29Speaker 3: Brown gets hurt in the third week of the season
- 7:32Speaker 3: or the fourth week of the season and has to
- 7:34Speaker 3: miss some period of time, four to six games, you're
- 7:36Speaker 3: going to say, I got unlucky, right? Amon Ross rarely,
- 7:39Speaker 3: if ever hurts, he's been so incredibly consistent in his
- 7:42Speaker 3: five years. So it just depends on how you sort
- 7:46Speaker 3: of view the world of fantasy football. If you could
- 7:47Speaker 3: be a little bit more, more robotic and just say
- 7:50Speaker 3: a better player is worth the higher pick and take CMC.
- 7:55Speaker 3: If you're going to kick yourself because you're emotional, and
- 7:57Speaker 3: I'll be the first to admit, sometimes I am emotional
- 7:59Speaker 3: in fantasy football.
- 8:01Speaker 2: I'm often very emotional.
- 8:02Speaker 3: Then you can hedge against how pissed off you'd be
- 8:05Speaker 3: if CMC gets hurt by taking Jonathan Taylor or Amon
- 8:09Speaker 3: Ross St.
- 8:10Speaker 2: Brown or James Cook somewhere in that same range.
- 8:13Speaker 6: Field, where do you have A.J. Brown ranked among fantasy receivers?
- 8:16Speaker 6: Because the pairing with Drake May feels like a match
- 8:19Speaker 6: made in heaven.
- 8:19Speaker 3: Hmm.
- 8:20Speaker 2: Yeah, he's wide receiver 10 for me.
- 8:22Speaker 3: So, you know, none of the surprises inside those first
- 8:25Speaker 3: 10 picks of wide receiver. He's kind of going in
- 8:28Speaker 3: the same territory as Rashi Rice, Drake London, Malik Neighbors,
- 8:33Speaker 3: George Pickens, Chris Olave. Those are kind of the receivers
- 8:36Speaker 3: surrounding A.J. Brown in rankings and where they're being drafted
- 8:39Speaker 3: right now. A.J. Brown feels like one of a handful
- 8:44Speaker 3: of guys that is playing with the proverbial chip on
- 8:47Speaker 3: his shoulder more so than most guys. This year, I
- 8:50Speaker 3: think Lamar Jackson might be in that category as well.
- 8:53Speaker 3: You could make an argument that after the playoffs, Josh
- 8:56Speaker 3: Allen could be in that category. But with A.J., he's
- 8:58Speaker 3: still amongst, if not the best, deep receivers in the NFL.
- 9:03Speaker 3: Crazy that over the past four years, A.J. Brown's average
- 9:06Speaker 3: receiving touchdowns was 24.6 yards. Like the guy is a
- 9:10Speaker 3: big play threat waiting to happen. You go back to
- 9:12Speaker 3: last year and tell you, you know, this from his
- 9:14Speaker 3: college days as well. Drake may is about as good
- 9:16Speaker 3: of a deep ball thrower as we have in the NFL.
- 9:18Speaker 3: He's incredibly, incredibly gifted on throws down the field. He
- 9:22Speaker 3: had a passer rating of one 31 last year. That
- 9:25Speaker 3: was easily best in the NFL. And it wasn't like
- 9:27Speaker 3: Drake through, you know, he wasn't in the bottom five
- 9:30Speaker 3: of the attempts where good fortune could explain how, how
- 9:34Speaker 3: statistically prolific he was. He was way out there. He's
- 9:36Speaker 3: seventh and past attempts. on throws 20 plus air yards
- 9:40Speaker 3: down the field so really talented deep ball thrower with
- 9:44Speaker 3: arguably the best deep ball receiver in the nfl once
- 9:47Speaker 3: you get past week one against seattle i think things
- 9:49Speaker 3: look really really promising for aj brown.
- 9:52Speaker 7: I'm gonna be a little selfish here because as i
- 9:55Speaker 7: do all my research i tend to develop man crushes
- 9:58Speaker 7: right uh on on guys later in drafts especially and
- 10:02Speaker 7: i've got my guy this year and i might be
- 10:05Speaker 7: a little too enthusiastic about him so i'm hoping you're
- 10:08Speaker 7: either gonna a confirm it or or or talk me down.
- 10:11Speaker 5: Or lie yeah Jadarian Price. I'm all over Jadarian Price.
- 10:16Speaker 7: I like him too.
- 10:17Speaker 4: Yes.
- 10:19Speaker 5: Am I kidding myself? Am I looking at the logic?
- 10:22Speaker 2: Yeah, no, no.
- 10:23Speaker 3: That's, I mean, one of the things I try to
- 10:26Speaker 3: remind people that play fantasy football that aren't novices, like
- 10:29Speaker 3: if you have a minimum sort of baseline of football knowledge,
- 10:32Speaker 3: you're going to be okay. And it's your team. Like
- 10:35Speaker 3: you should follow your logic and your process. No team, zero,
- 10:39Speaker 3: zero teams last year gave the football to, to the
- 10:42Speaker 3: running backs more often as runners.
- 10:45Speaker 2: Than the Seahawks.
- 10:46Speaker 3: They were tied with Atlanta for the most running back
- 10:48Speaker 3: rushing attempts in the NFL. And while it's a new
- 10:51Speaker 3: offensive coordinator and play caller with Clint Kubiak in Las Vegas,
- 10:54Speaker 3: like I don't think Mike McDonald was going to hire
- 10:56Speaker 3: an OC after winning the Superbowl to totally reshape the offense.
- 11:00Speaker 3: The approach should be the same for him. And while
- 11:04Speaker 3: Zach Charbonnet could fill, uh, get back into this backfield
- 11:07Speaker 3: at some point, Charbonnet coming off of an ACL tear
- 11:09Speaker 3: late last season, like our, We'll see when that happens, A,
- 11:13Speaker 3: but B, like the other running backs that are currently
- 11:17Speaker 3: competing with Jadarian Price for carries, George Holani and Emmanuel Wilson,
- 11:24Speaker 3: who they signed from the Packers this offseason. So this
- 11:27Speaker 3: is not George– excuse me, Jadarian Price competing with– Not
- 11:32Speaker 3: that I'm anti-Jeremiah Love, but Jeremiah Love, the Cardinals gave
- 11:37Speaker 3: Tyler Algier a real contract this offseason before they drafted
- 11:41Speaker 3: Jeremiah Love. There might be games where Algier has 15
- 11:44Speaker 3: carries to Love's 13. It's not totally implausible. So Price
- 11:48Speaker 3: finds himself in a really good spot. Two biggest question
- 11:50Speaker 3: marks are pretty straightforward for Jadarian Price. One is he
- 11:54Speaker 3: had six catches last year. The question is, Did Notre
- 11:59Speaker 3: Dame not throw him the football because he was incapable?
- 12:01Speaker 3: Or did Notre Dame not throw him the football because
- 12:03Speaker 3: they had Jeremiah Love? I tend to lean towards that
- 12:06Speaker 3: second argument over the first. The other thing is fumbles
- 12:09Speaker 3: were a problem for Price in college.
- 12:11Speaker 2: And you guys all know this. It's amazing.
- 12:13Speaker 3: NFL coaches cannot tolerate fumbles at all, ever. A guy
- 12:19Speaker 3: can be running for 150 yards and a half, and
- 12:22Speaker 3: then he fumbles the ball in the third quarter, and
- 12:24Speaker 3: you never see him again. So if Price can't keep
- 12:27Speaker 3: his fingers on the football, then he could be a
- 12:30Speaker 3: bit more vulnerable.
- 12:31Speaker 2: But it's a really rosy opportunity right now.
- 12:33Speaker 4: What round do you have Dajon Love going in?
- 12:37Speaker 3: Dejan Love, I had him in the third for a while.
- 12:41Speaker 3: It was tough, though, because, like, have you guys seen
- 12:43Speaker 3: him run routes?
- 12:45Speaker 4: Yes, on the beach with his helmet on.
- 12:47Speaker 3: Yeah, like, I feel like he's a perfect fit for
- 12:49Speaker 3: Brock Purdy. Like, I just think he's, like, really crisp
- 12:52Speaker 3: in and out of breaks. For the timing and rhythm quarterback,
- 12:55Speaker 3: you need a wide receiver that always hits his landmarks. Durable, like,
- 12:59Speaker 3: to my knowledge, he didn't miss a single game last season.
- 13:02Speaker 3: So I had him in the third round, but I've
- 13:04Speaker 3: reached for him in the.
- 13:05Speaker 2: Second round on occasion.
- 13:06Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 13:07Speaker 6: Especially since he cleared all three parts of that waiver.
- 13:09Speaker 3: Yep.
- 13:12Speaker 6: Field, Carnell Tate finished preseason, zero receptions on six targets.
- 13:18Speaker 6: How concerned are you for Carnell Tate entering the season?
- 13:23Speaker 3: If I were to make a list of players whose
- 13:24Speaker 3: stock has dropped the most for me in the preseason,
- 13:28Speaker 3: and this is all relative, right?
- 13:29Speaker 2: I'm not talking.
- 13:31Speaker 3: I had him as, I think, wide receiver 23. He's
- 13:33Speaker 3: not wide receiver 53 now, right? But I am going
- 13:36Speaker 3: to flip-flop my Titans wide receivers that I want most
- 13:39Speaker 3: going into the season. I think Carlton's going to be
- 13:41Speaker 3: an absolute stud in the NFL. I thought he was
- 13:44Speaker 3: very pro-ready. I just think this offense is going to
- 13:47Speaker 3: take some time. And Wondell Robinson is going to be
- 13:50Speaker 3: awesome for the Titans again.
- 13:53Speaker 2: He kind of graduated, I think.
- 13:55Speaker 3: Wondell Robinson, for a while, was viewed as this gadget,
- 13:58Speaker 3: slot-only receiver. Right.
- 14:01Speaker 2: You saw him last year. He was awesome.
- 14:03Speaker 3: Super productive for the Giants, stepping into a bigger role
- 14:05Speaker 3: with Malik Nabors out.
- 14:07Speaker 2: He knows the offense, obviously, already. There's no concerns about.
- 14:10Speaker 3: You know, kind of being, excuse me, fully caught up
- 14:13Speaker 3: to speed. So I'm going to flip-flop him and Carnell Tate.
- 14:17Speaker 3: I've drafted a lot of Wanda Robinson so far this year.
- 14:20Speaker 3: Tate is going to be really good. Not concerned about
- 14:22Speaker 3: the player long-term at all. I just think this is
- 14:25Speaker 3: going to be a slower roll into the NFL than
- 14:28Speaker 3: I had previously forecasted.

- 16:03Speaker 1: son was doing.
- 16:04Speaker 4: A draft he asked dad for help uh.
- 16:06Speaker 1: Dad was supposed to be a sounding board he didn't
- 16:08Speaker 1: want to get too involved in the second round his
- 16:11Speaker 1: kid took garrett wilson and mikey a ripped the computer
- 16:13Speaker 1: from his hands and took over the draft how do
- 16:15Speaker 1: you feel about mikey a doing that huh.
- 16:19Speaker 3: Oh man well mikey is a great himself he's a
- 16:21Speaker 3: great father he's a great father he is you know
- 16:24Speaker 3: so i know that he you know he's doing it
- 16:26Speaker 3: from a place of of good spirits right yes um
- 16:30Speaker 3: that's a tough one. Like you got to teach your son.
- 16:31Speaker 3: Now you have to like kind of show them the way.
- 16:34Speaker 4: Right.
- 16:34Speaker 3: Because I think you have to decide at this moment
- 16:38Speaker 3: and probably before the draft, but it's a sunk cost.
- 16:40Speaker 2: We're going to move forward.
- 16:41Speaker 3: It's like until the jets turn things around, Do you
- 16:45Speaker 3: tell your son, just no more? Because I can't let
- 16:48Speaker 3: you be hurt twice. If the Jets don't win and
- 16:51Speaker 3: Garrett Wilson has three catches for 30 yards, you're going
- 16:54Speaker 3: to be so frigging.
- 16:55Speaker 2: Ripped the next day. You're going to be so pissed
- 16:58Speaker 2: about that.
- 17:00Speaker 3: In some ways, you actually just draft whoever his least
- 17:03Speaker 3: favorite team is, probably the Patriots.
- 17:04Speaker 2: Tell them to draft Drake May and A.J.
- 17:07Speaker 3: Brown. Because if those guys go off, his fantasy team
- 17:10Speaker 3: is probably doing great. If those guys stink, the Patriots
- 17:13Speaker 3: are coming back down to earth. So draft, you can
- 17:16Speaker 3: take this a step further. Josh Allen, Devon Achan, A.J. Brown,
- 17:22Speaker 3: whoever you think is the best AFC East tight end,
- 17:25Speaker 3: just keep nailing all the AFC East players. And if
- 17:29Speaker 3: your team wins, or they win, I should say, they perform,
- 17:32Speaker 3: your team's going to do great in fantasy. If they don't, then,
- 17:35Speaker 3: you know, the Jets might be friskier.
- 17:37Speaker 5: In real life.
- 17:37Speaker 4: Right. It's a win-win. You're right. Yes.
- 17:41Speaker 7: Between my fantasy leagues, the Jets, and my betting, I
- 17:44Speaker 7: try and finish 500 by Tuesday morning. And I'm usually
- 17:49Speaker 7: about 500 because I'm a pretty good fantasy player and
- 17:52Speaker 7: I root for the Jets.
- 17:56Speaker 2: Oh, I bet you're not even as well.
- 17:59Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 18:00Speaker 2: I mean, it is strategic. I tell you, it really is.
- 18:02Speaker 3: Like I kind of go through over each year, I
- 18:06Speaker 3: kind of adopt like a different strategy to account for
- 18:08Speaker 3: all that stuff. Like there have been years where I
- 18:10Speaker 3: have tallied in like a spreadsheet, which I'm not exactly
- 18:14Speaker 3: the most proficient spreadsheeter, but I found out a way
- 18:17Speaker 3: to like calculate my record week by week and over
- 18:20Speaker 3: the course of the season and all my fantasy teams.
- 18:22Speaker 3: And the reality of what I do, and I think
- 18:25Speaker 3: people don't necessarily understand this when I get invited to
- 18:29Speaker 3: play in.
- 18:29Speaker 2: A league is that like, yeah, you know, this is
- 18:31Speaker 2: my job.
- 18:32Speaker 3: It doesn't mean that I'm going to win every league
- 18:33Speaker 3: that I play in. I'm still, you know, I'm still
- 18:36Speaker 3: beholden to the fortune of what happens a week in
- 18:40Speaker 3: and week out injuries, uh, all the things that go
- 18:43Speaker 3: into fantasy success. But you sort of realize you're like, man,
- 18:46Speaker 3: like just a couple of bad teams can like really
- 18:48Speaker 3: tank your overall record. So this year, I think I'm
- 18:50Speaker 3: just letting it go. And I'll certainly know generally how
- 18:54Speaker 3: each team is doing. I don't think I'll be counting
- 18:57Speaker 3: it meticulously as I have in years past.
- 19:01Speaker 6: Field, last time we had you on, we pitched you
- 19:03Speaker 6: on the idea of bank the tank as our NBA correspondent. Yesterday,
- 19:08Speaker 6: we came up with the idea of, Instead of the
- 19:10Speaker 6: Clippers just vacating the pick, we want that now to
- 19:14Speaker 6: be a part of the in-season tournament, and Steve Ballmer
- 19:18Speaker 6: has to present that pick to whoever wins the in-season tournament.
- 19:21Speaker 5: You're out on that.
- 19:22Speaker 4: Year by year. So whoever wins the in-season tournament gets
- 19:25Speaker 4: the Clippers pick, yes.
- 19:27Speaker 2: By the way, I would tell you this.
- 19:29Speaker 3: Maybe this is probably not top of mind for the NBA,
- 19:33Speaker 3: but that pick should exist somewhere, right?
- 19:35Speaker 2: It's one fewer player who gets to realize his dream
- 19:38Speaker 2: every year in the NBA draft.
- 19:39Speaker 3: Because, you know, there are 59 picks now as opposed
- 19:42Speaker 3: to 60 until there's expansion. Just get that pick instituted somewhere,
- 19:47Speaker 3: whether it goes to your point, whether it goes to
- 19:49Speaker 3: the teams. wins the in-season tournament, whether it goes to
- 19:53Speaker 3: the team that has the most wins relative to their
- 19:57Speaker 3: record the prior season, excluding the Clippers. Find some way
- 20:01Speaker 3: to reward somebody with it and make sure that Ballmer
- 20:04Speaker 3: is presenting it.
- 20:05Speaker 2: What a story that was. I've listened to probably.
- 20:09Speaker 3: I don't know, six hours of Clippers content in the
- 20:11Speaker 3: last 24 hours, which is approximately five hours and 55
- 20:15Speaker 3: minutes more than all other Clippers content I listened to
- 20:19Speaker 3: in the first 39 years of my life prior to yesterday.
- 20:22Speaker 1: Right.
- 20:22Speaker 4: How about this?
- 20:23Speaker 1: Whoever has the best record against the Clippers, they get
- 20:26Speaker 1: the pick.
- 20:27Speaker 4: I mean.
- 20:27Speaker 2: That's amazing. They get to tiebreaker.
- 20:30Speaker 4: A big point. They get everyone's best shot.
- 20:32Speaker 2: How about this? How about this, though?
- 20:34Speaker 3: Because you've got to make it point differential included, right?
- 20:38Speaker 3: The Thunder have Shane Gilgis-Alexander playing 48 minutes in a
- 20:43Speaker 3: meaningless otherwise game in, like, early January. And you're like,
- 20:46Speaker 3: why is Shane there when it's 152-64 in the fourth quarter?
- 20:50Speaker 3: This makes no sense.
- 20:52Speaker 2: It'd be amazing.
- 20:54Speaker 4: Right, but that's a tiebreaker, correct?
- 20:55Speaker 1: Meaning if two teams are 3-0 against the Clippers, we've
- 20:57Speaker 1: got a point differential, right?
- 20:59Speaker 2: Yep, exactly. Great.
- 21:02Speaker 3: That's my favorite part of the in-season tournament so far.
- 21:06Speaker 3: That and the people getting angry at the courts. I
- 21:09Speaker 3: don't have as strong of an opinion on the courts
- 21:11Speaker 3: as most do, but I see these people getting so
- 21:14Speaker 3: frustrated on the internet about the courts. I'm like, I
- 21:17Speaker 3: promise you, your tweet is not going to compel the
- 21:21Speaker 3: NBA to go to the arena right now and change
- 21:23Speaker 3: the floor.
- 21:24Speaker 2: They're just not going to do that.
- 21:25Speaker 4: But they think they can make a difference.
- 21:27Speaker 3: They do.
- 21:27Speaker 4: They do.
- 21:28Speaker 2: Yeah, they sure do.
- 21:29Speaker 4: And you're telling them they're not.
- 21:32Speaker 2: Sorry for crushing hopes and dreams right there.
- 21:34Speaker 4: Oh, my God. So good. Give me some guys, some
- 21:37Speaker 4: sleepers here, Field.
- 21:38Speaker 1: Some guys that maybe people aren't thinking about that you
- 21:40Speaker 1: think are going to have big seasons.
- 21:42Speaker 3: Yeah, I mentioned Wanda Robinson as a player that's going
- 21:45Speaker 3: later than where... I think he deserves to go. It's
- 21:48Speaker 3: going to be steadier than I think he's being given
- 21:50Speaker 3: credit for. I've decided that for me, generally speaking, like
- 21:53Speaker 3: outside the top 100 on ESPN is a good place
- 21:56Speaker 3: to find a guy that you believe is a sleeper.
- 22:00Speaker 2: If you're going to the 11th round or later, it's sleeper-ish.
- 22:04Speaker 3: Kenneth Gainwell from the Bucs is kind of everybody's favorite
- 22:06Speaker 3: sleeper right now. Sneakily was fifth in the NFL in
- 22:10Speaker 3: running back catches last year.
- 22:12Speaker 2: Not a bad runner as well, just.
- 22:14Speaker 3: Hasn't been giving a ton of opportunities. Not exactly sure
- 22:17Speaker 3: what to make of Bucky Irving there in Tampa Bay
- 22:21Speaker 3: right now. He was awesome as a rookie. He was
- 22:23Speaker 3: good the first four weeks of last season and then
- 22:25Speaker 3: really fell off. He had dealt with this sort of
- 22:28Speaker 3: mysterious health situation as well, but just flat out wasn't
- 22:31Speaker 3: as good of a player last year as he was uh,
- 22:34Speaker 3: in his rookie season, there's all kinds of quarterbacks that
- 22:38Speaker 3: could be considered sleepers. I think Jordan loves going to
- 22:41Speaker 3: have a big year this year. He's being drafted super late. Uh,
- 22:44Speaker 3: the Packers off season has been very sort of passing
- 22:47Speaker 3: game centric. It did not add any running backs of
- 22:50Speaker 3: notes with the prospect of Josh Jacobs, missing time facing
- 22:54Speaker 3: them all off season. Um, it got more attention recently
- 22:58Speaker 3: and that resulted in him being placed on the commissioner's
- 23:00Speaker 3: exempt list. Um, But I don't think like this team
- 23:04Speaker 3: is totally surprised by what's taken place.
- 23:06Speaker 2: Jordan Love is one of my favorite guys.
- 23:08Speaker 3: And then, you know, tight ends, there's a million names
- 23:11Speaker 3: and like four of them will end up mattering. But
- 23:14Speaker 3: a deep league, deep league sleeper would be Gunnar Helm,
- 23:18Speaker 3: another Titan hero I just think is going to be
- 23:20Speaker 3: good this year.
- 23:21Speaker 2: He's just a capable player.
- 23:22Speaker 3: The Titans signed a blocking tight end, Daniel Bellinger, away
- 23:25Speaker 3: from the Giants.
- 23:26Speaker 2: Should be Gunnar Helm on passing game opportunities.
- 23:29Speaker 3: Isaiah Likely is now with the Giants, another name that's
- 23:32Speaker 3: being drafted lower than I think he deserves to be.
- 23:34Speaker 3: A lot of reporting this summer that he's kind of
- 23:36Speaker 3: been the go-to guy for Jackson Dart as they've been
- 23:39Speaker 3: dealing with life without Malik Nabors on a full-time basis.
- 23:42Speaker 2: So, Isaiah Likely and Gunnar Helm, a couple of names
- 23:44Speaker 2: that I like as well.
- 23:45Speaker 4: Field, as a.
- 23:46Speaker 6: Fantasy football expert and somebody who also plays fantasy football,
- 23:50Speaker 6: how do you balance the fact that you're giving all
- 23:52Speaker 6: this advice on sleepers, knowing that people in your leagues
- 23:56Speaker 6: might be listening to this same advice?
- 23:59Speaker 3: Well, I don't think it matters as much in sort of,
- 24:02Speaker 3: it matters, but not quite as much in standard redrafts
- 24:05Speaker 3: where you're just, it's a snake order and you just
- 24:07Speaker 3: make a pick because I can always sort of like
- 24:10Speaker 3: jump to the head of the like the front of
- 24:12Speaker 3: the line to pick a player if I really want
- 24:14Speaker 3: that guy. But I was doing what we call salary
- 24:17Speaker 3: cap leagues, also known as auction leagues recently. And I
- 24:20Speaker 3: noticed that the guys that I was targeting or I
- 24:23Speaker 3: would have targeted, and I never, I shouldn't say never,
- 24:26Speaker 3: but I rarely nominate a player for auction that I
- 24:30Speaker 3: actually want. I'm usually nominating somebody that I want other
- 24:33Speaker 3: people to spend money on. But I did notice that
- 24:36Speaker 3: a couple of the guys that I went into the
- 24:37Speaker 3: draft targeting were going for much higher than I expected
- 24:41Speaker 3: because I think I've just talked too much about them
- 24:43Speaker 3: during the preseason.
- 24:44Speaker 2: And some of my buddies in that league caught wind
- 24:46Speaker 2: of it.
- 24:47Speaker 4: Three kids, huh?
- 24:50Speaker 2: Three kids. Listen, that's why I got to come back
- 24:53Speaker 2: on the show. I got bills to pay, you know?
- 24:55Speaker 4: Yes.
- 24:55Speaker 2: At some point, the royalties will hit my mailbox.
- 24:57Speaker 4: I'm just trying to tell you to slow down. I mean,
- 24:59Speaker 4: that's all.
- 24:59Speaker 2: We're done.
- 25:00Speaker 4: We're done.
- 25:01Speaker 6: Okay.
- 25:01Speaker 4: All right. Would you want to rank the kids?
- 25:03Speaker 2: I mean, what criteria are we going with today? You know,
- 25:09Speaker 2: how much is it like eating habits? Is it sleep habits?
- 25:14Speaker 2: Is it eating habits?
- 25:15Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 25:16Speaker 2: I tell you, anybody with multiple children can attest. As
- 25:20Speaker 2: you know, and I will tell you, yes, yes.
- 25:24Speaker 4: The hour changes by hour, I'm certain. Yes, 100%.
- 25:28Speaker 1: You work for the Patriots. You work for Belichick. You
- 25:30Speaker 1: know Bill very, very well. You know Taylor was a
- 25:32Speaker 1: walk-on football player at the University of North Carolina.
- 25:36Speaker 4: It begs the question, is Bill Belichick back?
- 25:40Speaker 2: Tell you what, a lot going on with the program
- 25:42Speaker 2: right now, obviously.
- 25:44Speaker 3: That was a nice window over in Dublin. I know
- 25:49Speaker 3: that TCU, whatever, maybe TCU is a middle of the
- 25:51Speaker 3: pack team in the Big 12, but I felt personally,
- 25:56Speaker 3: and Taylor may disagree, fully agree, offensive operation looked a
- 25:59Speaker 3: whole lot better this year.
- 26:00Speaker 2: It just felt like a real offense. They're still down players.
- 26:05Speaker 3: As I look at the guys that are eligible for
- 26:06Speaker 3: the upcoming draft right now, there's a guy that's going
- 26:10Speaker 3: to go in the first three rounds, maybe some day
- 26:12Speaker 3: three picks there. but it looked way better offensively to me.
- 26:16Speaker 3: Defense I wasn't going to be as concerned by because,
- 26:18Speaker 3: you know, Bill Belichick is playing a large role in it.
- 26:22Speaker 3: But offensively, I felt like the Bobby Petrino hire from
- 26:26Speaker 3: a football standpoint was on the play on Saturday.
- 26:29Speaker 2: Not perfect, but definitely better.
- 26:30Speaker 3: Yes.
- 26:31Speaker 6: When you say a lot's going on, you're talking about
- 26:32Speaker 6: the throwback uniforms they released yesterday, right?
- 26:35Speaker 2: Those 1980 uniforms, they look good.
- 26:36Speaker 3: Those do look awesome. I mean, the color scheme and
- 26:41Speaker 3: the uniform design the entire uniform set is as good
- 26:46Speaker 3: as there is maybe just in sports, like not just
- 26:48Speaker 3: college football.
- 26:49Speaker 2: It's, it's elite elite.
- 26:51Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 26:51Speaker 2: Carolina blue, a top tier color.
- 26:54Speaker 4: No doubt. Where are we spending the Labor Day weekend here?
- 26:57Speaker 4: We go to Nantucket, Cape Cobb. What's going on with
- 26:59Speaker 4: the Yateses?
- 26:59Speaker 2: I wish, I wish we'll be home.
- 27:02Speaker 4: We'll be home.
- 27:03Speaker 3: Some drafts and trying to keep kids, get kids to
- 27:07Speaker 3: sleep and, and, and eat and then continuing to rank
- 27:10Speaker 3: them throughout the weekend.
- 27:12Speaker 1: All right, buddy, we appreciate it. As always, we'll talk
- 27:14Speaker 1: to you again very, very soon. I can't have you
- 27:16Speaker 1: around here enough. The great Field Yates, he's all over
- 27:19Speaker 1: your fantasy coverage on ESPN.
- 27:21Speaker 4: Thank you, buddy.
- 27:22Speaker 2: Thank you, guys.
- 27:23Speaker 3: All right.
