- 1:11Go check that out after the show is
- 1:13over at BelieveMeAchieve.com.
- 1:18All right.
- 1:19So let's go ahead and kick this off.
- 1:22All right, guys, and if you're thirsty, feel
- 1:24free to go get yourself something.
- 1:25I have a little Snapple iced tea.
- 1:30Maybe you want some water, RO, a snack,
- 1:32fruit, whatever it is.
- 1:33Go grab that and come on back to
- 1:35the show.
- 1:36So let's kick this off, guys.
- 1:37Again, hello and welcome, everyone, to the Inspirations
- 1:40for Your Life show.
- 1:40I'm John Seymour, serial entrepreneur, engineer, marketing specialist,
- 1:45video producer, podcast host, coach, keynote speaker, graduate
- 1:49student, and a passionate lifelong learner, and I'm
- 1:54also going to be a published author very
- 1:56soon.
- 1:58So today I'm focusing on resilience, recovery, and
- 2:02of course, personal growth.
- 2:03We've talked about these before, but a little
- 2:04bit different tonight.
- 2:05Life will throw challenges at us, but how
- 2:08we respond defines the trajectory of our personal
- 2:11and our professional life and the course of
- 2:14success we take.
- 2:17Now, every choice, every pause, every small recovery
- 2:21compounds into, yes, a eureka moment, a momentum
- 2:26and lasting growth, and I think that's a
- 2:28very important thing to understand.
- 2:32So let's get right into this, all right?
- 2:33So first thing is resilience.
- 2:35Resilience allows bouncing back from setbacks.
- 2:39Every obstacle is an opportunity to become stronger.
- 2:44Recovery restores energy for action.
- 2:47Recharge your body and your mind to maintain
- 2:50consistent progress.
- 2:53I know sometimes that can seem very daunting
- 2:57for people, like, oh my gosh, John, like,
- 2:59how am I going to do this?
- 2:59I don't even know where to start.
- 3:01That makes sense, but I think we have
- 3:04to trust our gut a little bit and
- 3:06go from there, okay?
- 3:10Yeah, so growth comes, guys, from learning, not
- 3:15avoiding failure.
- 3:20We know that Einstein, I don't know if
- 3:22you guys know this, Einstein, actually Thomas Edison
- 3:25too, Thomas Edison found 999 ways the light
- 3:32bulb would not work.
- 3:38Yeah, 999 ways the light bulb would not
- 3:43work.
- 3:47So Thomas Edison famously stated that he had
- 3:50not failed, but rather discovered, as I said,
- 3:53999 ways that wouldn't work while developing the
- 3:56light bulb, this reflects his belief in learning
- 3:59from failures as a crucial part of the
- 4:01invention process.
- 4:03And I think a lot of us are
- 4:05hard on ourselves because we have not achieved
- 4:09what we want yet.
- 4:10We might not have done well yet, but
- 4:13we're on that path.
- 4:15And just as we're about to get there,
- 4:17we give up.
- 4:18And I don't think that's a good thing,
- 4:19but people do that because they get frustrated,
- 4:21they hear from other people, and that just
- 4:23never, never, never a good thing.
- 4:25So embrace every experience, guys, as a true
- 4:28lesson in life.
- 4:29And when you do that, your life will
- 4:31change.
- 4:32I promise you, but it does not change
- 4:34overnight.
- 4:35It does not change in one hour.
- 4:37It does not change in a week.
- 4:39It can take a little more time.
- 4:41Avoid harmful shortcuts.
- 4:43Quick fixes may feel easy, but slow long
- 4:48-term success is what happens.
- 4:53Resilience strengthens problem-solving.
- 4:57Challenges sharpen your ability to think strategically.
- 5:02Recovery prevents burnout, guys.
- 5:05Reg your breaks, preserve focus and creativity and
- 5:09clarity.
- 5:12So daily reflection compounds our wisdom.
- 5:17Take time, guys, to review decisions and adapt
- 5:20with your life.
- 5:21Small recovery, sustained performance, even brief pauses can
- 5:27maintain stamina.
- 5:29Yeah, a brief pause can do that.
- 5:31For major tasks, why is it people never
- 5:35want to do this for other tasks?
- 5:36We only do it for major tasks.
- 5:37We don't do it for other tasks in
- 5:39life.
- 5:39And these tasks are important, but they may
- 5:41not be major, but that doesn't mean that
- 5:43we should not give them the same respect
- 5:45and the same dedication.
- 5:48OK, it's these things that can make a
- 5:50really big difference, guys, in our life.
- 5:54All right, so avoid toxic patterns, identify habits
- 5:58that drain energy and replace them with constructive
- 6:02actions.
- 6:03And I know that sounds hard, but it's
- 6:05something we all have the power to do.
- 6:07Resilience, guys, sharpens strategic thinking.
- 6:11Pressure refines judgment.
- 6:13When you respond deliberately, you change.
- 6:17You become different.
- 6:19You become better.
- 6:21Recovery maintains mental clarity.
- 6:25Rested minds make better decisions and spot opportunities.
- 6:31You know, when you're doing something, maybe something's
- 6:34not working the way you want.
- 6:35You take a break.
- 6:35When you take that break, well, that's the
- 6:38opportunity for you to take your short-term
- 6:41information and commit it to your long-term
- 6:43memory.
- 6:43It happens automatically.
- 6:44You don't have to do anything.
- 6:47Growth, guys, accelerates with deliberate effort.
- 6:51Focused, intentional actions compound results faster.
- 6:57Avoid temporary gains that harm long-term success.
- 7:02Value long-term strategy over instant gratification.
- 7:06You know, a lot of people want instant
- 7:08gratification, but the truth of the matter is
- 7:12it actually winds up costing them more than
- 7:15they anticipated.
- 7:17It may not necessarily be money.
- 7:19It could be other resources.
- 7:20It could be people.
- 7:23So that's important to realize.
- 7:25Cost is not always something that we pay
- 7:27for monetarily.
- 7:32Resilience converts obstacles into opportunities.
- 7:37Every problem is, guys, a stepping stone for
- 7:40an advancement in your life.
- 7:42Recovery replenishes focus.
- 7:45Mental resets allow you to tackle complex tasks
- 7:54with precision.
- 7:56I find this a lot with studying, you
- 7:58know, sometimes we're working on something and it
- 7:59has a few levels to it.
- 8:02When we start to get part of it
- 8:03and then we take a break and we
- 8:05come back, it seems a lot easier to
- 8:08understand because now it's like we've coded the
- 8:12world with how we're going to do it.
- 8:14And I think that's an important piece that
- 8:16a lot of people, you know, they miss
- 8:18that whole concept.
- 8:21They miss what that means.
- 8:23And under stress, it causes more problems.
- 8:25So calm persistence, guys, keeps you moving forward.
- 8:28When pressure mounts around you, very nice team,
- 8:36recovery creates space for decision making.
- 8:40So pause evaluates and makes choices aligned with
- 8:45goals.
- 8:46Growth builds character over time.
- 8:50Personal development compounds as you learn from experience.
- 8:58Avoid inconsistent actions, guys.
- 9:01Momentum depends on reliability and deliberate follow through.
- 9:06And your reliability is actually predicated on a
- 9:11couple of things.
- 9:13It's predicated on how well your body is
- 9:15running.
- 9:15So that means you got to have good
- 9:17food in your system, good nutrition, got to
- 9:19have a good mental and spiritual diet.
- 9:22You also have to make sure that, you
- 9:26know, when you're doing these things, that your
- 9:29attitude is in alignment.
- 9:32If it's not, you're going to have a
- 9:35problem.
- 9:36What happens if you don't put gas in
- 9:38your car?
- 9:39Your car just stalls.
- 9:41What happens if you put bad gas in
- 9:42your car?
- 9:44It may not go as far.
- 9:46The engine might not sound as great.
- 9:48Resilience, guys, maintains composure.
- 9:52Emotional control is a key competitive advantage.
- 9:55Recovery sustains momentum.
- 9:57Strategic rest keeps energy available for critical tasks,
- 10:02guys, critical tasks.
- 10:04Growth compounds with experience.
- 10:09Every success and failure contributes to your personal
- 10:14well-being and your development.
- 10:16But people say to me, John, you know,
- 10:19I don't know what to do.
- 10:21And then, you know, they talk to a
- 10:24friend, and the friend doesn't have any experience.
- 10:26But suddenly, they think this person is going
- 10:31to be able to help them, but they
- 10:32don't have any business experience or experience in
- 10:35the area that they may need.
- 10:36Maybe it's not business.
- 10:38Avoid shortcuts, guys, that weaken learning because the
- 10:41shortcuts that weaken learning are just going to
- 10:43frustrate you so much.
- 10:45Deep engagement ensures real understanding and skill, right?
- 10:51Skills can be refined.
- 10:56They can get better in life, right?
- 10:59Resilience enhances emotional endurance.
- 11:03The ability to handle stress strengthens confidence.
- 11:09So if I can handle stress, I can
- 11:12handle confidence.
- 11:16Stress is something that tests us.
- 11:23And what we have to realize is that
- 11:25it's short-term, especially if we're making the
- 11:29right decisions.
- 11:29We're going to hit some stress hurdles sometimes.
- 11:31That's going to be normal.
- 11:33But we have to realize that that's important
- 11:35for our success path.
- 11:39Recovery, guys, restores alignment with priority.
- 11:42So take time, guys, to reassess and adjust.
- 11:47Focus.
- 11:49Growth thrives on consistent effort.
- 11:51Not the once in a while effort.
- 11:54Not the effort that you do just because
- 11:56you had nothing else better to do.
- 12:00Daily incremental improvements, guys, produce major results.
- 12:07Daily, daily, daily, consistent.
- 12:11People that do stuff for one day or
- 12:13one week or one month, and then they
- 12:16stop, and the behavior goes away, and now
- 12:20they haven't gotten anywhere.
- 12:23Because they haven't done it long enough.
- 12:27Avoid the distractions, guys, that stall progress.
- 12:31Protect your time and your mental energy to
- 12:36maintain flow.
- 12:37So when we think about flow, like flow
- 12:39with rivers, flow with the ocean, flow of
- 12:44our life, when we think about all these
- 12:46different kinds of flow that we have, I
- 12:49think that makes a huge, huge difference.
- 12:53And that huge difference can actually help you
- 12:58reach a completely different trajectory.
- 13:00One that's got more success than you ever
- 13:04imagined.
- 13:06Resilience, guys, plus recovery, plus growth, equals unstoppable
- 13:14momentum.
- 13:14Let me say that again.
- 13:16Resilience, with a big plus sign, plus recovery,
- 13:21plus growth, equals unstoppable momentum.
- 13:23Resilience, plus recovery, plus growth, equals unstoppable momentum.
- 13:28Resilience, plus growth, plus the recovery, is unstoppable
- 13:32momentum.
- 13:33Resilience, plus recovery, two R's, plus growth.
- 13:37So resilience, recovery, growth, is unstoppable momentum.
- 13:42Resilience, to bounce back.
- 13:45Resilience, to be able to be strong.
- 13:46And the recovery, right?
- 13:48So resilience is how well we can kind
- 13:50of hold up.
- 13:51And recovery is how we basically come back
- 13:54again if we get knocked down.
- 13:56And then our growth.
- 13:58And that equals unstoppable momentum.
- 14:01Harness these forces, guys.
- 14:03They're keys in life.
- 14:05And they'll help you own your path and
- 14:07create lasting impact.
- 14:09I think sometimes people, when you see a
- 14:14path, and the path is not, let's say,
- 14:18the most comfortable thing, people are like, oh,
- 14:20do we have to go this way?
- 14:21Isn't there a shorter way?
- 14:24Is there another thing we could do instead
- 14:26of this?
- 14:28People look for the shortcut.
- 14:33I just mentioned not to use the shortcut,
- 14:35but why is it people use shortcuts?
- 14:39I think people use them because they heard
- 14:45from others that you don't have to go
- 14:47all the way around the mountain.
- 14:49We can just cut through.
- 14:52But when we cut through, we miss the
- 14:57beautiful outdoors, the scenery.
- 15:02We might even miss the opportunity of bumping
- 15:05in or meeting somebody that might actually help
- 15:07us, all because we're looking for a shortcut.
- 15:09Now, I'm not saying everybody's looking for a
- 15:11shortcut.
- 15:11But the thing about shortcuts is they are
- 15:14so tempting for people.
- 15:20You know, here you are doing the right
- 15:21stuff.
- 15:22I'll give you a perfect example.
- 15:25Being in school when I was a student
- 15:28in high school, I remember studying for my
- 15:32tests and doing very well.
- 15:34And I remember other people, friends, who got
- 15:40annoyed with me because I wouldn't let them
- 15:42cheat off my test.
- 15:46And I said to myself, why are they
- 15:52annoyed at me?
- 15:53Like, what kind of friends are these that
- 15:56would get annoyed at me because I wouldn't
- 15:58let them cheat?
- 15:59Like, that's wrong.
- 16:00And that's putting pressure under me.
- 16:05I soon realized that these aren't friends I
- 16:11want to be with.
- 16:12And you know what happened?
- 16:14After a while, they just came back and
- 16:18it didn't really matter to them that I
- 16:20didn't help them cheat.
- 16:23Once in a while, they would throw to
- 16:24my face like, oh, you know, you're getting
- 16:25an A.
- 16:26And, you know, we're only getting a B
- 16:27or something.
- 16:28Because, you know, you know the answers.
- 16:30And we could, and I just don't even,
- 16:32I don't even respond to it.
- 16:36I know being in grammar school, it was
- 16:42different.
- 16:43Tests were different in grammar school.
- 16:47My favorite one was the spelling test.
- 16:50And I was an A speller.
- 16:52Well, my grandmother on my dad's side had
- 16:57bought me something called Speak & Spell.
- 16:59You might know Speak & Spell.
- 17:00Speak & Spell is an electronic device where
- 17:04it has the words.
- 17:06And you could basically sit there and you
- 17:08could spell the words.
- 17:09Now, I remembered a couple things that Speak
- 17:10& Spell did.
- 17:11One, you turn it on and it would
- 17:17have vocabulary mode.
- 17:18So this was really cool.
- 17:19So vocabulary mode was kind of neat.
- 17:20So it'd be like, say it, entertainment, say
- 17:25it.
- 17:25And you would say all these words and
- 17:27you're kind of like watching them.
- 17:28You're going back and forth.
- 17:28And it's like, now spell superficial.
- 17:34And then you put the words like S
- 17:37-U-P-E-R.
- 17:40So, and it was kind of neat, but
- 17:43back then you couldn't add your own words.
- 17:45But my grandmother was very picky in that
- 17:51she wanted me to do very well in
- 17:55spelling.
- 17:58And I remember every week we would have
- 18:01a spelling test.
- 18:04And whenever I had a spelling test, my
- 18:08grandmother would know about it.
- 18:10And usually I was staying at my grandparents
- 18:13about once a week.
- 18:16My parents were traveling.
- 18:18And it was kind of good because they
- 18:19were going over like my stuff.
- 18:22The thing I always liked to my grandmothers
- 18:24is that when I stayed there, so I
- 18:27would get up in the morning and she'd
- 18:33be up early.
- 18:36And she'd be making me eggs, scrambled eggs,
- 18:41Taylor ham, or sausage and toast.
- 18:48And then she'd always have some type of
- 18:49pastry that she got it.
- 18:51At this time, it was called the Waika
- 18:52Bakery.
- 18:53That's not around anymore.
- 18:55And so when I got up to do
- 19:01the spelling test the first time, we had
- 19:05a couple of things.
- 19:05We had something called Spelling Bee.
- 19:07And Spelling Bee was when you were called
- 19:09up to the front of the classroom.
- 19:10And you had to like, John, your word
- 19:13is prevaricate, I would say.
- 19:16So I'd have to say the word, use
- 19:20it in a sentence.
- 19:24And then I have to say the word,
- 19:29use it a sentence, spell the word and
- 19:35say it again.
- 19:36So prevaricate, P-R-E-V-A-R
- 19:41-I-C-A-T-E.
- 19:45The boy, unfortunately, prevaricated when he
- 19:56was talking about his experiences on his trip.
- 20:06Prevaricate.
- 20:07Now, I was allowed to use different tenses
- 20:09of the word.
- 20:11And if you didn't do that format, like
- 20:13I mentioned to you, guess what happened?
- 20:15Well, you'd be told to sit down.
- 20:17But here's the great thing.
- 20:19When you did really well the Spelling Bee,
- 20:21okay, so John, Melissa, Joseph, and Paul, you're
- 20:28all exempt from the spelling test tomorrow.
- 20:31You all have an A.
- 20:34And that was kind of cool.
- 20:35Right?
- 20:37But what I learned is that testing in
- 20:40grammar school is different than testing, you know,
- 20:44in, let's say, after fifth grade, after fourth
- 20:46grade.
- 20:47And then testing in high school was different.
- 20:49And testing in college is even different.
- 20:52Not only do you have different types of
- 20:56studying, but you have different types of ways
- 20:59to take the tests.
- 21:00Like in college, a lot of some professors
- 21:02use something called a Scantron.
- 21:03We have to take a number two pencil
- 21:04and you have to like fill in the
- 21:05dots, which is a pain.
- 21:09So what's changed?
- 21:13I think as you grow and you learn,
- 21:17you have to realize that the same method
- 21:20that was used in the past may not
- 21:23always be used in the future.
- 21:26And so you have to adapt to these
- 21:29different mythologies.
- 21:32Because they're what the professor's requiring.
- 21:39And I just think that's a kind of
- 21:40an interesting thing.
- 21:42And so if you want to make a
- 21:44lasting impact in your life, you got to
- 21:47have resilience, you got to have the recovery,
- 21:48you got to have that great attitude.
- 21:50If you don't have the great attitude, okay,
- 21:57you're going to give up before you even
- 21:58start.
- 22:00You're going to make excuses for yourself to
- 22:02stop.
- 22:03And so thinking about, you know, lasting impact,
- 22:07thinking about how this works, and how a
- 22:11lot of people don't really understand that recovery
- 22:17creates the space for decision making.
- 22:22And taking a pause doesn't mean we're lazy.
- 22:27Taking a pause is something a lot of
- 22:29people do to think back on the information.
- 22:37And pausing also allows us to take the
- 22:40information from short to long term memory.
- 22:42But really, it goes from short term to
- 22:45long term when we actually rest.
- 22:49It could be a short cat nap, it
- 22:50could be sleeping at night.
- 22:53But that's when we actually take the information,
- 22:56and we commit to our long term memory.
- 22:58It happens automatically.
- 23:02But it does not happen unless we have
- 23:05good nutrition.
- 23:07We also, I forgot to say, we need
- 23:09good rest, right?
- 23:10The body needs rest.
- 23:13Anywhere from six to eight hours, depending on
- 23:15what your body needs.
- 23:16And we got to do this consistently.
- 23:18We've got to treat our body well.
- 23:20If we don't do this, and we keep
- 23:23pushing our body, what's going to happen?
- 23:26Our bodies say, you know what?
- 23:27I had enough.
- 23:28Like, I got to take a break.
- 23:29Well, you can't.
- 23:30Well, I'm just telling you I'm out.
- 23:32So you're on your own.
- 23:34So we got to listen to signs that
- 23:36our body's telling us, like, hey, you know,
- 23:38I need to rest.
- 23:43I need to rest.
- 23:45I need to understand where I'm going.
- 23:56And talking about resilience today, and recovery, and
- 24:00personal growth.
- 24:02Personal growth doesn't just mean growth in your
- 24:07own personal.
- 24:08It can also be in your business.
- 24:10Okay.
- 24:11Personal growth means we're starting one place.
- 24:15And we're using skills that we have, refining
- 24:19them, or learning new skills, so that we
- 24:21can go up the growth ladder.
- 24:26And what you're going to find is that
- 24:29when your mind and body start to use
- 24:32these tools, and you start to get better
- 24:34at things, you find it like a game.
- 24:40Um, I love studying.
- 24:42For me, I love studying, and I love
- 24:44creating mock quizzes, and just going back and
- 24:47testing myself.
- 24:49You know, at first, it can be a
- 24:51little daunting, because, you know, you want to
- 24:53get everything right.
- 24:54But as long as you give yourself plenty
- 24:56of time, like this midterm is coming up
- 24:58next week, I start studying a few weeks
- 25:00out.
- 25:01But I still study every day from class.
- 25:02So it's not like I'm just studying one
- 25:03time.
- 25:06I think when you make a decision, I
- 25:09don't care what subject you're in, I don't
- 25:10care what grade you're in, or what age
- 25:12you are.
- 25:14When you make a decision that you don't
- 25:16just want to pass the test, that you
- 25:17want to own the information, so that when
- 25:20that class is over, that information is mine.
- 25:24It's mine.
- 25:27And that's a whole different mentality to, I
- 25:30want to just do well on the test.
- 25:31Yes, I want to do well on the
- 25:32test.
- 25:33But I want to demonstrate mastery, and then
- 25:35own that material.
- 25:37That's what I want.
- 25:40And that's something a lot of people, they
- 25:45don't go for mastery.
- 25:47You think they go for mastery, but then
- 25:50they really don't.
- 25:52They go for the shortcuts.
- 26:00And you're only hurting yourself when you do
- 26:02stuff like that.
- 26:06Creating a lasting impact is getting the gifts
- 26:12of education, and using them to improve and
- 26:20better your life and others.
- 26:22So to help you become a better version
- 26:24of yourself, and help others become better versions
- 26:26of themselves as well.
- 26:33And when somebody says to you, you know
- 26:34what?
- 26:36Why do I want to become better?
- 26:40I just look at them.
- 26:45And they'll usually say something to me like,
- 26:48well, I don't need to change my life.
- 26:49I don't need to make it any better.
- 26:53You're going to get those people.
- 26:57Maybe because they don't feel they can grow.
- 27:01Maybe they don't have enough confidence in themselves.
- 27:03Could be a lot of reasons.
- 27:04Could be a lot of reasons.
