- 0:02Today's topic is the existential crisis of humanity and the
- 0:10evolution of consciousness as a solution to this crisis.
- 0:16First, I'd like to thank you for your interest in this critical
- 0:21issue for the future survival of our entire human race.
- 0:26There's a positive way forward for humanity as we face the
- 0:30intense challenges before us. When we are under intense
- 0:35pressure, we have the impetus to make needed changes.
- 0:40That's the lesson of nature and the lesson of human history.
- 0:46What do we each worry about as we live our lives?
- 0:50We worry about our health and that of our family.
- 0:54We don't generally tie our health issues to our
- 0:57environment, but there is a clear link.
- 1:01We are filling the rivers, the oceans, the earth and the air
- 1:05with toxic chemicals which are migrating into our bodies.
- 1:11We find increasing stress in our lives as we struggle to survive,
- 1:15deal with health and family issues, and try to deal with the
- 1:19increasing climate impacts that we notice every day.
- 1:24We are inundated with constant news of wars, mass migrations,
- 1:29increased homelessness, drug use, alcoholism, and the
- 1:33breakdown of health. But there's more.
- 1:37The ocean fisheries are on the brink of total collapse,
- 1:42threatening the food supply for billions of people.
- 1:46Freshwater aquifers are being drained and freshwater is
- 1:49running out. The oceans are dying, and with
- 1:53it the greatest source of oxygen we need to live.
- 1:59As the problems increase, tensions increase, and we
- 2:03continue to develop ever more destructive weapons that can
- 2:06destroy all life on the planet many times over at the push of a
- 2:11button, so to speak. Anyone who experienced the
- 2:15nuclear bomb drills in schools in the 1960s carries this fear
- 2:20in a very real way. All of these things have one
- 2:25common cause. Our business and economic
- 2:29leaders, religious leaders, political leaders all try to
- 2:34find ways to solve these issues. But we are met with failure to
- 2:38act, gridlock and finger pointing rather than any real
- 2:43answers. The problems continue to get
- 2:47worse. Our despair deepens.
- 2:51So what is the solution if it is not to be found in technology,
- 2:56business, religion, economic systems, or politics?
- 3:01First, we need to step back a little bit and understand the
- 3:06problem from a foundational perspective.
- 3:10In order to do so, let's talk about consciousness for a
- 3:13moment. When we look at physical matter,
- 3:17there's no way or method for consciousness to arise
- 3:20spontaneously. Rock remains rock.
- 3:25When we see life emerge, we find that certain types of material
- 3:28forms have been modified to hold the energy we call life, and we
- 3:35see that each life has encoded within its material shell a
- 3:40specific formulation that makes it what it is.
- 3:44The seed of a dandelion brings forth a dandelion.
- 3:49The seed of a Redwood tree brings forth a Redwood tree.
- 3:54Life is the first major evolutionary emergence of
- 3:57consciousness in the material world, and it came about with
- 4:02encoded data and modified forms that could carry out that data
- 4:07set. Eventually, life forms evolve
- 4:12that could hold a new level of consciousness, the animal
- 4:14consciousness. Animal consciousness has an
- 4:18enhanced vital force, includes the ability to move and
- 4:23eventually utilize at least rudimentary mental powers to
- 4:27carry out the encoded data set included in animals.
- 4:32Out of animal life we see the development of full mentality
- 4:36with the emergence of thinking mind, the ability to analyze
- 4:41developed organized pattern recognition, create logical step
- 4:46by step inferences, develop complex communication methods
- 4:50and create and utilize tools. And then the ability of self
- 4:56reflection and recognition of a broader world and universe
- 5:00arises and we become truly human in our viewpoint.
- 5:07The steps we see here, each with ever increasingly complex outer
- 5:11forms suited to expressing an ever more complex and coded data
- 5:16set, each bring with them a paradigm shift.
- 5:21And with that paradigm shift comes new opportunities and new
- 5:25challenges. The new level of consciousness
- 5:29is tasked with finding ways to solve the issues created by the
- 5:32action of the prior level. Evolution of consciousness is
- 5:38not done. We believe that the challenges
- 5:41facing us in today's world are basically unable to be solved,
- 5:45and thus many people simply have given up hope.
- 5:50And one way or the other, through despair or through
- 5:54uncaring pursuit of personal enjoyment, they let the problems
- 5:59get worse. A wise man once said that we
- 6:02cannot solve the problems we face with the same level of
- 6:06thinking that led to those problems in the 1st place.
- 6:11He was so right. It is time therefore, to
- 6:15understand and embrace the pattern of the evolution of
- 6:18consciousness and take up the challenge and carry out the
- 6:22opportunity to develop a new paradigm representing the next
- 6:27evolutionary stage of development beyond the mental
- 6:30level. We have explored under the
- 6:33oceans, climbed mountains, searched the jungles and plains
- 6:37and frozen regions of the planet and started exploring outer
- 6:42space. It is time to undertake the
- 6:45exploration of inner space and open ourselves up to the further
- 6:49encoded opportunities that lie within as we become more than
- 6:54mind driven human beings and embrace our greater destiny.
- 6:59As the next phase of consciousness develops and
- 7:01manifests, this involves a paradigm shift.
- 7:06Humanity has already started to undergo this paradigm shift.
- 7:10At one point in our history, we believed that the Earth was
- 7:14flat. It became revolutionary when we
- 7:17finally recognized that the world was round and could be
- 7:20circumnavigated. At another point, we believed
- 7:24that the sun revolved around the earth and we were actually the
- 7:28center of all existence. Those who researched and
- 7:32determined otherwise were treated as heretics and had to
- 7:37undergo tremendous suffering in their day.
- 7:41Now we know that the Earth revolves around the sun, and
- 7:45even the sun is not the center of the universe, but a small
- 7:50player in a much larger universal existence.
- 7:55We have not yet caught up with the implications of these shifts
- 7:59in our way of relating to our lives and the world we live in.
- 8:03We still act as if each one of us is the center of the
- 8:07universe. We work to optimize our own
- 8:10situation at the expense of everyone and everything else.
- 8:15This is the strict mental and vital consciousness at work.
- 8:20When we saw the image of the Earth seen from space, it
- 8:24crystallized for many people the oneness and interdependence of
- 8:28all existence. Many people began to reflect on
- 8:32this and open themselves to another paradigm shift, this
- 8:38time away from the mental logic to a more complete global way of
- 8:45seeing things. This process needs to be
- 8:48developed and it is our role as part of the solution towards
- 8:53saving the planet and our species to begin to implement
- 8:58this shift of awareness in the day-to-day decisions we make and
- 9:03the way we evaluate our lives and our actions.
- 9:08From this new viewpoint, we can find solutions that are not all
- 9:13black and white either or, but which find the solution of
- 9:17harmony that begins to heal the planet and our relations with
- 9:22each other. There are ranges of
- 9:25consciousness beyond the mind that many are beginning to
- 9:28recognize. Scientists are starting to work
- 9:31with intuition, inspiration, and the essential basis of
- 9:36consciousness, which is the source of specific encoding that
- 9:40is involved in matter and which manifests once the conditions
- 9:44are ripe. There are practical steps one
- 9:47can take to participate in this evolutionary development.
- 9:54So we ask ourselves, what can we do about all of this?
- 9:58Is there any solution? The evolution of consciousness
- 10:03is an inevitable development, but will it occur quickly enough
- 10:07to forestall the damage that has already occurred and is
- 10:10accelerating as we speak? Individuals who become awake to
- 10:16this possibility and aid the process and help speed it up.
- 10:23And that is where you and I come into this picture.
- 10:29You can find out more. Sri Aurobindo has been a leading
- 10:33researcher in this field. The book Integral Yoga,
- 10:37Shriorobindo's Teaching and Method of Practice, is a great
- 10:41guidebook for understanding both the concept and the
- 10:45implementation of the practice to begin to realize these next
- 10:49stages of consciousness beyond the mind into one's own life.
- 10:54Another great introductory text is Shriorobindo, or The
- 10:58Adventure of Consciousness by SAT Prem.
- 11:03We can also practice integrating the new global perspective of
- 11:06oneness into our lives. It may begin as a purely mental
- 11:11practice, but eventually you begin to see and respond based
- 11:17on that unity of the entire creation.
- 11:20You will notice your reaction to events and beings changing as
- 11:26you do this, with a growing and greater understanding taking
- 11:30place of more rigid mental viewpoints.
- 11:34Take up practices, whether they are part of a spiritual or
- 11:37religious path or a spiritual endeavor, or a scientific
- 11:42seeking or artistic path that opens up your receptivity to
- 11:48intuition, inspiration, insights that are not driven by the
- 11:53fragmented and stepwise process of the logical mental intellect.
- 12:00Begin to look at the major issues the world faces and see
- 12:03how they can be addressed with a sense of harmony and balance
- 12:07instead of fixed ideological approaches.
- 12:10This may involve technology or not.
- 12:14All human endeavors have their place in the massive adjustments
- 12:18we need to make in order for humanities to survive and
- 12:23thrive. Whatever you are doing in your
- 12:26life, your career and your relationships, try to bring
- 12:32compassion, goodwill, understanding and harmony based
- 12:37on the interrelated nature of all your approach to these
- 12:41things. Encourage and support others who
- 12:45are trying to solve the issues and focus time, attention and
- 12:50where possible funds into approaches that rely on building
- 12:54a harmonious balance rather than A1 sided approach with
- 12:58unintended consequences. Look into organizations that are
- 13:04working to make a difference, for instance Oroville
- 13:08International USA. You can find it at AVIU sa.org.
- 13:16Oroville aspires to be a laboratory of spiritual and
- 13:19material research to address the existential problems of humanity
- 13:24from a new perspective and standpoint.

- 13:48If you're interested in books to find out more, you can visit
- 13:52lotuspress@lotuspress.com. Their publications are also
- 13:57available in most cases, both in print and as ebooks, and the
- 14:02ebooks are widely available on Amazon, Apple iTunes and Google
- 14:07Play. These may look like small or
- 14:11simple things, but be assured as you begin to make changes in
- 14:17your life and the focus of your time, attention, energy and
- 14:22resources, things begin to change around you.
- 14:27Every individual who takes up this effort makes a real
- 14:31difference and helps us to reach the tipping point where humanity
- 14:35can begin to solve the problems rather than make them worse.
- 14:41It is not a matter of converting anybody or proselytizing, but in
- 14:46effectuating real change inwardly.
- 14:49It is not as easy as it sounds, but it is far more rewarding
- 14:55than the endless round of entertainment and avoidance that
- 14:58we normally engage in when we confront the endless challenges
- 15:03of the world that are vital and mental elements have created.
- 15:09Thank you for your caring, your interest and your efforts.
