- 1:29[SPEAKER_00]: I'm thrilled to welcome my friend and author, Maryel Davenport to the show.
- 1:34[SPEAKER_00]: Maryle, once an atheist transformed by God's Word, knows the life-changing power of Scripture.
- 1:40[SPEAKER_00]: She is the creator of the Tend Your Soul Bible Study series, and she's passionate about helping women draw closer to Jesus through His Word.
- 1:48[SPEAKER_00]: Today, we're talking about what it really means to tend your soul through transitions, especially those that come with motherhood when our adult children are spreading their wings.
- 1:58[SPEAKER_00]: will dig into the Tend method, hear Maryel's personal story, and talk about her brand new study, Ruth, finding grace in the unexpected.
- 2:08[SPEAKER_00]: I know this conversation is going to encourage you to lean into God's presence in the middle of change.
- 2:13[SPEAKER_00]: So let's jump in.
- 2:14[SPEAKER_00]: Welcome, Maryel.
- 2:15[SPEAKER_00]: Hey, Pamela, thank you so much for having me.
- 2:18[SPEAKER_00]: Well, let's start with your story about what inspired you to write the Tending Your Soul Bible Study B series.
- 2:27[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, so I have been teaching Babel City to women and using my tend method for over twenty years.
- 2:34[SPEAKER_01]: I started with the Lord just started speaking to my heart as I was tending my little salsa garden in my backyard through that I developed the tend method.
- 2:44[SPEAKER_01]: And after teaching women in my home and at church and then going to online in twenty twenty like the rest of us did, then the Lord opened opportunities to be able to teach women all over the world had attend their soul through scripture using my tent method.
- 3:01[SPEAKER_01]: By God's grace, I was able to connect with our daily bread publishers and now we have the ten-year soul Bible study series coming through them.
- 3:11[SPEAKER_00]: Oh, that's so exciting.
- 3:13[SPEAKER_00]: So I know we're going to talk about the ten method later about this acronym, but I would love for you to define what ten in your soul means and why it's so important in this season of transition with your adult children.
- 3:26[SPEAKER_00]: Because you're right there with us, right?
- 3:28[SPEAKER_00]: I am.
- 3:29[SPEAKER_01]: I am my voice or grown and going.
- 3:33[SPEAKER_01]: So, yeah, I mean, really, I developed the tend method when my kids were little and I thought that was a season that I needed to just be tending my soul, but man, it is so much more of a need now when everything is transitioning and I feel like there's just more of a shift in what is my purpose, what is my call, what, you know, all these fears and griefs that are just kind of
- 3:59[SPEAKER_01]: plummeting the you know emptiness mom that you know all about and coaches through.
- 4:05[SPEAKER_01]: So I think for me it's really tending your soul is really about learning to lean in to God through his word and there are
- 4:16[SPEAKER_01]: multiple ways to tend our soul.
- 4:18[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, anything from listening to worship music to going for a walk and talking to Jesus to spending time in his word.
- 4:24[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, there's just really no wrong way to tend to our soul with the truth of God's word.
- 4:30[SPEAKER_01]: But for me, it comes down to
- 4:33[SPEAKER_01]: time in his word, using this tend method that I developed because it's just this grace-filled way, it's just this guided way to lean into his word in a slower way that helps me to really soak in time with the Lord.
- 4:49[SPEAKER_01]: Without taking a lot of time, it's just really effective for me and it has really helped me to kind of tether my heart to the Lord in this season of a lot of transition and instability and just grief that I didn't know I would have in that sort of thing.
- 5:06[SPEAKER_01]: So that's my heart about tending because I really feel like in this season, man, we need to tend our souls as mama's as these babies grow and go.
- 5:16[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I think there's something so powerful.
- 5:18[SPEAKER_00]: I feel like for years because I was so busy with my five kids, I didn't pay attention to my soul.
- 5:26[SPEAKER_00]: And because we're just so busy, but the soul is that deep, deep place where you do connect with God and where we keep all the things.
- 5:36[SPEAKER_00]: You know, the heaviness and the weight and the sorrows and the stress and that's where intimacy with God is, you know, as we meet
- 5:46[SPEAKER_00]: in that soul, the place of art thinking, in our emotions, and then connecting with God at that point is just so powerful.
- 5:52[SPEAKER_00]: And that's why your method is so important because it makes us go, oh God, you're speaking to me right now.
- 6:00[SPEAKER_00]: You have something for me right now.
- 6:02[SPEAKER_00]: I love that so much.
- 6:04[SPEAKER_00]: So I want to know what has been your greatest struggle in this transition with adult kids.
- 6:12[SPEAKER_01]: I think for me, the biggest struggle has been my surprise over the grief that comes with it and just how really, truly, better sweet it is.
- 6:22[SPEAKER_01]: I really loved being a mom.
- 6:25[SPEAKER_01]: I homeschooled my boys and was just very involved in their life as most moms are, whether you homeschool or not.
- 6:33[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, you know, we are just, some moms, we are just
- 6:36[SPEAKER_01]: deep in it.
- 6:37[SPEAKER_01]: And I loved being a mom, an active daily mom.
- 6:40[SPEAKER_01]: And so as that shifted, I just realized it's more than just a change.
- 6:49[SPEAKER_01]: But there's also grief tied up into it as they pull away, even though that's the goal.
- 6:55[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, the whole point is for them to grow and go and present pursue the life God has for them.
- 7:01[SPEAKER_01]: Great.
- 7:02[SPEAKER_01]: But then they do it.
- 7:04[SPEAKER_01]: And I'm like,
- 7:05[SPEAKER_01]: What's happening?
- 7:06[SPEAKER_00]: Exactly.
- 7:07[SPEAKER_00]: We're like, what?
- 7:08[SPEAKER_00]: We knew this was coming, but guys, it sure is hard.
- 7:12[SPEAKER_00]: I think you're right.
- 7:13[SPEAKER_00]: That transitional grief is just so significant.
- 7:18[SPEAKER_00]: I think of all the moms in this early September time of the year where they're just
- 7:23[SPEAKER_00]: drop their kids off and college and I'm telling you, I didn't care if it's your first kid or your fifth kid.
- 7:28[SPEAKER_00]: You still have to go through that grief because it's a change every time and so you have to just sit with the Lord and he's so good to comfort us and provide just what we need.
- 7:39[SPEAKER_00]: Let's jump into your ten method.
- 7:43[SPEAKER_00]: Could you briefly walk us through what ten stands for because we know it's an acronym.
- 7:48[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, yeah.
- 7:48[SPEAKER_01]: So it is an acronym.
- 7:50[SPEAKER_01]: And so T is you take time to pray.
- 7:53[SPEAKER_01]: Anytime we approach God's word, we want to begin by praying and kind of just reorienting our mind to knowing that we're speaking to God and he's speaking to us.
- 8:03[SPEAKER_01]: So asking him to show me who you are, you know, as we get into his work is really important.
- 8:08[SPEAKER_01]: And then E is examing the scripture and that's where we just write down the verse or verses that we're tending through that day.
- 8:17[SPEAKER_01]: The studies have shown that eighty percent of what we write we remember.
- 8:20[SPEAKER_01]: I'm in middle age that it's a lowered number than that.
- 8:26[SPEAKER_01]: But it's true nonetheless, we do better remember what we write down than what we read or what we listen to.
- 8:33[SPEAKER_01]: And regardless of our learning style, writing really makes a difference.
- 8:38[SPEAKER_01]: It also helps slow us down when we write down the verse and we really notice like keywords that are occurring or paying attention to details that maybe we missed when we read a chapter a day kind of thing.
- 8:50[SPEAKER_01]: So examine the scripture is where I write it.
- 8:53[SPEAKER_01]: Then in is notice the lesson and that's where we're going to ask what is this teaching about God primarily because scripture is about God and reveals his character to us.
- 9:03[SPEAKER_01]: And so what is this teaching about God and also what is like in these verses I just wrote is there a promise or an action a command or an example?
- 9:12[SPEAKER_01]: What is the lesson being taught here?
- 9:15[SPEAKER_01]: Because the Bible was written for us but not originally to us.
- 9:20[SPEAKER_01]: and so it's important to pay attention to like what was actually happening originally for that first audience that first author wrote to and so in recognizing that context it's amazing how lessons will kind of come to the surface as we see that and then D is due what it says and that's where we respond to that lesson in our own personal specific life today.
- 9:45[SPEAKER_01]: And I have really learned that the more specific I get about how I'm going to respond today, then the more that sort of sticks and I start to have little, you know, little by little, just precept on precept applications.
- 10:01[SPEAKER_01]: that eventually is bearing fruit for the Father's glory.
- 10:06[SPEAKER_00]: I love that.
- 10:06[SPEAKER_00]: So is there a part of this ten method that's easy for you or you relish the most or and also on the opposite?
- 10:16[SPEAKER_00]: Is there one of those that's harder you think from most people?
- 10:19[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, for me and my favorite is writing the scripture because I do feel like that really
- 10:26[SPEAKER_01]: concrete into my heart.
- 10:28[SPEAKER_01]: And I can recall it throughout the day, even bits and pieces are key words.
- 10:32[SPEAKER_01]: I'll come back to you.
- 10:34[SPEAKER_01]: But I have heard that the hardest part is always noticing the lesson.
- 10:39[SPEAKER_01]: It is to, you know, try to draw out what is being taught here.
- 10:44[SPEAKER_01]: And so oftentimes like when I taught my boys when they were younger or if I
- 10:48[SPEAKER_01]: and teaching someone who is not real sure about a lot of, you know, of what scriptures teaching, the most important part that I try to teach is what is a teaching about God?
- 10:59[SPEAKER_01]: If we can look at that and what it's teaching about God, what is true about the character of our God, that will change everything.
- 11:08[SPEAKER_01]: And then if we can just respond to that in our life,
- 11:12[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, that little by little difference is amazing.
- 11:16[SPEAKER_01]: You can go through a book of like Esther that God and I even mentioned and it will blow your mind how much we can learn about God in a book like that.
- 11:25[SPEAKER_01]: So anywhere in Scripture, there's always something we can glean out of it of, you know, God's character, the heart of God, what grieves God, what he rejoices over.
- 11:36[SPEAKER_01]: And so being able to lean into it in that way and just coming away with that, my boys when they were little used to
- 11:42[SPEAKER_01]: they would draw a picture of what they thought was happening in that verse or verses.
- 11:47[SPEAKER_01]: And then they would draw God of how they thought he was acting in that was he being kind and he had a heart around God and the cross.
- 11:56[SPEAKER_01]: And it's so interesting, like how we just visualize the heart of God and who he is.
- 12:03[SPEAKER_01]: So I think that's the most important part is really getting to know God through it.
- 12:08[SPEAKER_01]: But I gotta say, responding to God's word,
- 12:13[SPEAKER_01]: That's the seed that presses into the soil of our heart.
- 12:15[SPEAKER_01]: Like it respond, you know, little by little.
- 12:18[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I love that so much.
- 12:20[SPEAKER_00]: I too think when we are reading God's Word, we should always be asking, what is this showing me about God?
- 12:27[SPEAKER_00]: What is this telling me about who God is?
- 12:30[SPEAKER_00]: So often we want to jump to the, what is it saying about me?
- 12:33[SPEAKER_00]: And I'm like, no, no, no, no.
- 12:35[SPEAKER_00]: First, we got to magnify the Lord.
- 12:38[SPEAKER_00]: We got to see what it says about him.
- 12:40[SPEAKER_00]: That's not made God small.
- 12:42[SPEAKER_00]: He's so rich.
- 12:43[SPEAKER_00]: He's so wise.
- 12:44[SPEAKER_00]: He's so large.
- 12:45[SPEAKER_00]: He's so expansive.
- 12:46[SPEAKER_00]: He's so powerful.
- 12:47[SPEAKER_00]: He's so wonderful and compassionate and caring.
- 12:50[SPEAKER_00]: And I mean, there's so many
- 12:52[SPEAKER_00]: qualities.
- 12:52[SPEAKER_00]: I'm like, if you're not applying this, why are you even reading it?
- 12:56[SPEAKER_00]: So I'm like, I love your D because like, what is the point if we're not going to actually do what God says?
- 13:02[SPEAKER_00]: I'm out of fact another great question is to say, God, what do you have for me today?
- 13:06[SPEAKER_00]: What do you want me to do with this?
- 13:08[SPEAKER_00]: Of course he wants us to, of course, because that's how we change.
- 13:12[SPEAKER_00]: That's how we grow.
- 13:13[SPEAKER_00]: That's how we died a self in all the cook that we thought all of us deal with.
- 13:19[SPEAKER_01]: Absolutely.
- 13:20[SPEAKER_01]: And when we know the character of God, we are empowered to act on it.
- 13:24[SPEAKER_01]: Like, it kind of one feeds the other.
- 13:27[SPEAKER_01]: You know, if we write his word, it's like pressing that seed into the soil.
- 13:31[SPEAKER_01]: And then we're like, okay, if God is stable, God is strong, God is with me, God is, you know, whatever, characteristic.
- 13:40[SPEAKER_01]: And then we respond to that.
- 13:42[SPEAKER_01]: Like, then I'm empowered to forgiveness for my husband, have had a day.
- 13:46[SPEAKER_01]: I know my God has forgiven me and graces music.
- 13:49[SPEAKER_01]: How can I not extend that or see the relationship?
- 13:52[SPEAKER_01]: So yeah, absolutely.
- 13:53[SPEAKER_01]: I think it just one flows into the other.
- 13:55[SPEAKER_01]: If you know God, you're empowered then to act on it and begin to bear fruit that please listen.
- 14:02[SPEAKER_00]: What did I say?
- 14:03[SPEAKER_00]: A starter list of things mom saved that frustrate their adult children.
- 14:08[SPEAKER_00]: Identify the statements that trip you up and learn strategies to have more harmony and connection with your grown child.
- 14:14[SPEAKER_00]: Grab my free guide, ten things not to say to your adult child, and five ways to stop yourself from saying them.
- 14:21[SPEAKER_00]: You can find that at the link in the show notes and start improving your communication today.
- 14:27[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, that's awesome.
- 14:29[SPEAKER_00]: So how do you think your ten method could help a mom that's just grieving this transition?
- 14:35[SPEAKER_01]: I started tending through specifically Ruth when I was going through the transition of my oldest going to college in really all the transitions of life, just natural transitions, but I really started seeing how God's word really helps me to find the stability I need in this season.
- 14:58[SPEAKER_01]: As my son was leaving for college and then now my younger one is about the graduate college.
- 15:04[SPEAKER_01]: I feel like in those huge changes,
- 15:08[SPEAKER_01]: leaning into something that is just a gentle guide is so helpful.
- 15:14[SPEAKER_01]: I know what I'm going to do with scripture when I sit down at each morning.
- 15:18[SPEAKER_01]: That is such a helpful guidance, you know, to have, to not feel like everything in my world feels scattered at times, but then I know I can sit down here.
- 15:29[SPEAKER_01]: I can lay all my anxieties at a speed.
- 15:32[SPEAKER_01]: And he will just walk me through this.
- 15:35[SPEAKER_01]: I can write down the scripture, notice the lesson, do what it says.
- 15:39[SPEAKER_01]: And there just feels like a stabilizing rhythm in that, you know.
- 15:44[SPEAKER_01]: So having my tend method and having been doing this now for many years, I have just found it to be such a anchor for me in these transitional years.
- 15:55[SPEAKER_00]: I love that.
- 15:56[SPEAKER_00]: So you're saying it has allowed you to have some stability.
- 16:01[SPEAKER_00]: Absolutely.
- 16:02[SPEAKER_00]: Absolutely.
- 16:02[SPEAKER_00]: Because I've been able to tether my heart to the one that is stable.
- 16:06[SPEAKER_00]: Yes.
- 16:06[SPEAKER_00]: Yes.
- 16:07[SPEAKER_00]: And I love your ten method because sometimes we do, we come to the word and we go, it's too much.
- 16:13[SPEAKER_00]: Too much.
- 16:14[SPEAKER_00]: It's overwhelming.
- 16:15[SPEAKER_00]: And I love that your ten method is just this beautiful framework.
- 16:19[SPEAKER_00]: Like if you do this, this, this and this.
- 16:22[SPEAKER_00]: You will experience God, you will experience His peace and His love and His comfort.
- 16:27[SPEAKER_00]: I love that even when God corrects us, He does it with such kindness and such gentleness.
- 16:33[SPEAKER_00]: And especially when we're dealing with situations with our grown kids and the transitions of this time, He's just so kind and so gentle.
- 16:43[SPEAKER_00]: I love that so much.
- 16:45[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, absolutely.
- 16:47[SPEAKER_01]: So do you have a personal story of how using the ten approach brought you comfort and yeah absolutely so as my son was leaving for college my oldest and and you know there's something about the oldest leaving and there's something about the youngest and I only up to you so it's
- 17:02[SPEAKER_01]: And so my oldest one at that time I was tending through Ruth and in Ruth, I wrote this down because I really wanted your listeners to hear this that in Ruth chapter one verse nineteen through twenty two okay so Naomi is coming into Bethlehem at that time and I had been tending you know the previous verses
- 17:25[SPEAKER_01]: up to this.
- 17:26[SPEAKER_01]: And so when I landed here in this place in versus nineteen through twenty two, she and Ruth are coming into Bethlehem and the women of the town call her Naomi and she corrects them and says, don't call me Naomi, call me Mara because the almighty has dealt bitterly with me.
- 17:46[SPEAKER_01]: And as I was attending that, so I wrote down those verses and I'm noticing the lesson there and what really stood out to me is that
- 17:55[SPEAKER_01]: in the incredible pain that Naomi was navigating.
- 17:59[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, she had lost her husband, she had lost her sons.
- 18:02[SPEAKER_01]: She had come from a foreign land now that she had lived over ten years.
- 18:07[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, I'm not minimizing her pain for sure, but she comes in and in that pain, she fails to see the true character of God and she fails to see what's true about her.
- 18:21[SPEAKER_01]: And so she begins to identify herself more with her own pain than what's actually true.
- 18:28[SPEAKER_01]: And me and the Lord convicted me of that.
- 18:31[SPEAKER_01]: You know, as I'm launching this kid, he's graduating college and, you know, it has just stuck with me over the years because then he got married and now the other one is graduating college that reminder to keep coming back to who is God really inscriptions and who am I?
- 18:48[SPEAKER_01]: based on what he says.
- 18:50[SPEAKER_01]: Not based on my circumstances, not based on the grief of, you know, empty nesting, not based on whether my relationship with my kid is good or not, not based on whether my kids decisions are good or not.
- 19:03[SPEAKER_01]: But based instead on what is true about God, she lost sight of his character and of his goodness.
- 19:09[SPEAKER_01]: And I thought, this is why I need to keep tending my soul.
- 19:14[SPEAKER_01]: I need to remember not to lose sight of who he is, of his character, his goodness in my life, and who he claims I am.
- 19:23[SPEAKER_01]: And that's more true than what I can see.
- 19:26[SPEAKER_01]: And that has been such a place to tether my heart over these years that I just am like, yes, I need to be in-reath when I'm going through these transitions.
- 19:35[SPEAKER_00]: That's so good.
- 19:36[SPEAKER_00]: She identified with her pain instead of identifying with the God who loved her and cared about her.
- 19:46[SPEAKER_00]: And we tend to do that week and God will work consistently.
- 19:50[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, he's easy to just sit and have a little piggy party.
- 19:53[SPEAKER_01]: Oh, for sure.
- 19:55[SPEAKER_00]: And I want to invite others to my pity party.
- 19:57[SPEAKER_01]: Please let me tell you about how horrible my life is.
- 20:00[SPEAKER_01]: And really God's calling us so much more than that.
- 20:03[SPEAKER_01]: He has a purpose for us.
- 20:04[SPEAKER_01]: He has a calling for us.
- 20:06[SPEAKER_01]: He invites us to know him better through
- 20:09[SPEAKER_01]: hard things through suffering, through pain, through loss, through grief, all of those things.
- 20:15[SPEAKER_01]: Nothing is in vain in God's economy.
- 20:17[SPEAKER_01]: So we can trust him, but we've got to be anchored to his word for it.
- 20:21[SPEAKER_00]: That's right.
- 20:22[SPEAKER_00]: Beautiful.
- 20:22[SPEAKER_00]: Be anchored to his word.
- 20:24[SPEAKER_00]: Mary, I want to know how could a mom benefit from your new study, Ruth, finding grace in the unexpected?
- 20:32[SPEAKER_00]: Well, I feel like
- 20:34[SPEAKER_01]: In this season of transition and grief, all the uncertainties that we go through, Ruth can relate.
- 20:41[SPEAKER_01]: And that's why I always come back to Ruth in transitional seasons because through that book, we see a God who is stable, who is good, who helps her to navigate right where she needs to be for the purpose he has for her.
- 20:58[SPEAKER_01]: I feel like it's such an encouragement to my heart and I know it would be encouragement to other empty-ness moms who are trying to navigate this season because really finding grace in the unexpected is what it's about and that's what this season is is these little graces of God these God kisses
- 21:16[SPEAKER_01]: As we navigate these seasons that are unknown and that are scary with our kids, as they grow, as our marriages shift, I mean, all of those things.
- 21:26[SPEAKER_01]: And finding grace in the unexpected is exactly where we need to be.
- 21:31[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, it is just where we can tether our heart to the God who stays.
- 21:35[SPEAKER_01]: And navigate it with Ruth.
- 21:37[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, she knows she knows well about that.
- 21:41[SPEAKER_00]: Well, listeners, I'm saying it is good timing for this Bible study to release.
- 21:46[SPEAKER_00]: It's exactly what we need in this season of transition.
- 21:50[SPEAKER_00]: Well, Mary, I just want to thank you for joining me today.
- 21:53[SPEAKER_00]: What a rich conversation.
- 21:55[SPEAKER_00]: And I want you to tell us where my listeners can find you online.
