Transcript
- 0:00Tad Eggleston: We'll read it as we go.
- 0:02Tad Eggleston: Some of them aren't even that long, shivers. Good morning, everybody! Afternoon in Malta. I am joined by Maria and Marisol again for our Love and Rockets Book Club, and we're gonna do things a little bit differently today, because
- 0:19Tad Eggleston: We… we read our Luba No. 8, and our…
- 0:24Tad Eggleston: Measles number 6, and that's when we realized that there was… there was no,
- 0:29Tad Eggleston: Jaime in either one of them. So, there's also no Jaime in measles number 7, but there's, like, a page of Gilbert.
- 0:39Tad Eggleston: And… and then, there's… there's Jaime and… and measles number 8. So, we're gonna go through our normal thing, but then we're gonna read a couple of stories together for the first time, where… where…
- 0:53Tad Eggleston: We're making up our opinion on the spot, rather than going from what we knew already, so I.
- 1:00Maria Pena: We'll see how that goes.
- 1:01Marisol: Hmm.
- 1:02Maria Pena: I write a dissertation every time, or, you know, like, I didn't have time to write my essay and, notes.
- 1:10Tad Eggleston: Well, I mean, one of my favorite episodes that I have done of 22 Panels, and I'd like to do it again at some point, is Chris Condon and I were bored one day, and we… we found… I'd come across an issue of Daredevil written by Ann Nesenti and drawn by Steve Ditko.
- 1:28Tad Eggleston: And we decided to read it cold.
- 1:30Tad Eggleston: So neither one of us had read it.
- 1:32Tad Eggleston: when we started recording the episodes, so it was just commentary as we read the book, and that was kind of fun. So, you know, something I've managed to do before, or do again since then, until today. So I'm looking forward to it. But we'll see.
- 1:47Maria Pena: some history.
- 1:48Tad Eggleston: Yeah, we'll start with Luba. A nice, Guadalupe… er, not Guadalupe, where is it, Guadalupe.
- 1:54Maria Pena: Yeah, Guadalupe.
- 1:55Tad Eggleston: Yeah, one of the big cover, yeah.
- 1:57Maria Pena: How about you?
- 1:58Tad Eggleston: I, I love how we've got the, the big heads.
- 2:02Maria Pena: The big heads and little bodies.
- 2:05Maria Pena: Yeah.
- 2:06Tad Eggleston: head, little body.
- 2:08Tad Eggleston: For all of Fortunato's conquests?
- 2:11Maria Pena: I used to be, tapped for doing the office, caricatures when I was.
- 2:18Tad Eggleston: Okay.
- 2:19Maria Pena: In my first job, and I used to always do the big head and little bodies, because you see, you know, you can fit in a lot of, details.
- 2:29Maria Pena: It's a caricature like that.
- 2:33Tad Eggleston: And then.
- 2:34Maria Pena: So…
- 2:35Tad Eggleston: I love that Boots is following them everywhere.
- 2:38Marisol: Yep.
- 2:39Maria Pena: Yeah, so she's got her… And she's got her little, leather outfit with the…
- 2:45Tad Eggleston: Yeah, they're, they're in their sex cave, their, their sex dungeon, whatever, here, and there's food.
- 2:52Tad Eggleston: Boots in a… in a very, like…
- 2:58Tad Eggleston: Leather, but also kind of similar to Princess Leia in Return of the Jedi, when she killed Jabba.
- 3:07Tad Eggleston: We got the Leather Hot Slayer.
- 3:11Maria Pena: Yes.
- 3:11Tad Eggleston: outfit.
- 3:13Maria Pena: I wouldn't call it sexy, but, you know, it is kind of…
- 3:16Tad Eggleston: I mean, though, I do love Boots talking to Fortunato later about how she's all woman.
- 3:26Maria Pena: Oh, yeah, she's gonna… she's about to go, you know, she's gonna get in on the action with.
- 3:32Tad Eggleston: Yeah.
- 3:33Maria Pena: And she…
- 3:34Tad Eggleston: And I also… I think it's hilarious that, like, it's young Sergio that's, like.
- 3:41Tad Eggleston: What are you guys doing? You're too old for this, and, like…
- 3:46Maria Pena: Yeah, he's, he's having a crisis of,
- 3:49Tad Eggleston: Yeah.
- 3:50Maria Pena: Oh, he's.
- 3:52Tad Eggleston: I won't.
- 3:54Maria Pena: jealousy or something. I love that every time you see Fortunato, there's this sort of headline above him, Fortunato!
- 4:02Tad Eggleston: This.
- 4:03Maria Pena: It's every time.
- 4:05Tad Eggleston: How'd you go.
- 4:06Maria Pena: Excuse me.
- 4:06Marisol: It's so dramatic whenever we see him.
- 4:09Maria Pena: Yeah.
- 4:10Tad Eggleston: You know, we have the fallout from Dora Lise.
- 4:15Tad Eggleston: Coming out. Coming out on air.
- 4:19Tad Eggleston: Of course, like, what's weird is then she… she also spends time with Fortunato.
- 4:25Maria Pena: or to Natto, see the… see the headline.
- 4:31Maria Pena: This is interesting because it's, Narrated by Boots.
- 4:37Tad Eggleston: Yeah, no, Boots is writing all of the stories.
- 4:40Maria Pena: Of the stories, and…
- 4:42Tad Eggleston: Yeah.
- 4:43Maria Pena: She's seeing it from all her notes, or whatever. She's… she's… all her research.
- 4:49Maria Pena: And, oh.
- 4:54Maria Pena: Oh, yeah.
- 4:55Tad Eggleston: Gato was the one that, like, blabbed the tabloids that's got everybody in trouble. I do love the, the last line here. Poor peepo, all she's got left is her sportswear line, her partnership with health clubs, her Crescent stock investments.
- 5:16Maria Pena: Nice, we've got our pride.
- 5:17Tad Eggleston: cut our pride.
- 5:21Maria Pena: Yeah, so I've got those…
- 5:23Marisol: They knocked one thing off her plate, and she's.
- 5:26Tad Eggleston: Yeah, yeah.
- 5:27Marisol: Has Mountain.
- 5:29Maria Pena: And God was left bereft and crying. I think he's still… you think he's still in love with her?
- 5:34Tad Eggleston: Oh, definitely.
- 5:35Marisol: Sure.
- 5:36Tad Eggleston: That's supposed to be.
- 5:37Maria Pena: the season, yeah.
- 5:37Tad Eggleston: Definitely.
- 5:39Marisol: You know, he cannot be that obsessed and jealous of people without still being in love with her.
- 5:46Maria Pena: Yeah, of course, yeah, yeah.
- 5:48Tad Eggleston: So, so what Guys.
- 5:51Tad Eggleston: No, go ahead.
- 5:51Maria Pena: Tunetto's origin story.
- 5:53Tad Eggleston: Yeah, I was about to say, what did you guys think of Fortunato's origin story?
- 5:57Maria Pena: Yeah, I thought it was interesting, yeah.
- 6:00Maria Pena: messed up.
- 6:01Tad Eggleston: Am I the only one that, in this top picture, for, like, half a second, thought that Fritz was massaging?
- 6:09Maria Pena: Maggie.
- 6:10Maria Pena: Yeah, Hopi, or… I mean, she kind of looks more like Maggie, but…
- 6:15Maria Pena: But she does… I noticed that she looks more like… She's looking like Hopi.
- 6:23Maria Pena: Yeah.
- 6:24Tad Eggleston: But yeah, no, the three boys…
- 6:27Tad Eggleston: Raised to… to be horrible to women.
- 6:30Maria Pena: Yeah.
- 6:31Tad Eggleston: Fortunato.
- 6:32Maria Pena: Oh, Tale of, what is it? Not Tale of the cities, Great Expectations. It was that girl that was raised to destroy men.
- 6:41Tad Eggleston: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 6:42Maria Pena: Yeah.
- 6:44Maria Pena: It's a bit like that.
- 6:48Tad Eggleston: And boots. My appeal is IFINITE!
- 6:51Marisol: I love those bottom lines.
- 6:55Maria Pena: It's a little traffic.
- 6:56Marisol: The slow comes up on boots.
- 7:00Maria Pena: Yeah, and her mouth is always around, like, this sort of old.
- 7:04Tad Eggleston: Right.
- 7:07Maria Pena: Somebody's screaming.
- 7:09Marisol: Sick.
- 7:10Tad Eggleston: Sergio gets injured, and injured some more.
- 7:15Tad Eggleston: And parties.
- 7:16Maria Pena: Double injury. Did we see Fortunato in this one? Did he have a headline?
- 7:21Maria Pena: One sec.
- 7:23Tad Eggleston: So, I think this was the one non-Fortunato. We got lots of Sergio. What I can't…
- 7:29Marisol: Hmm.
- 7:29Tad Eggleston: figure out here.
- 7:30Maria Pena: No one who went back.
- 7:34Maria Pena: Oh, no.
- 7:36Tad Eggleston: is… is… did Sergio actually manage to have one last game, or is that him dreaming of one last game?
- 7:45Maria Pena: You know, I wondered that.
- 7:48Maria Pena: But he has the injuries from… from his fall and all that, so…
- 7:53Tad Eggleston: Yeah.
- 7:54Maria Pena: I think, I think he did mention.
- 8:00Maria Pena: And what he wanted to say was that he loved… I think we can say asked him, is there something you wanted to say? And I think he… it was all that,
- 8:09Maria Pena: All that insight that he got when he nearly broke both his knees.
- 8:16Maria Pena: you know.
- 8:17Tad Eggleston: Let's finish with the little corner of playing soccer again.
- 8:21Marisol: Yeah.
- 8:23Tad Eggleston: I don't know, it's a little weird to have his mom and her lover, who's also his lover, Yep.
- 8:32Maria Pena: Yeah.
- 8:35Tad Eggleston: Both shoving…
- 8:36Maria Pena: Hell yeah, it's so…
- 8:37Tad Eggleston: space.
- 8:42Maria Pena: Yeah, totally.
- 8:44Marisol: It's turned into a really weird love triangle.
- 8:47Maria Pena: Guadalupe,
- 8:51Maria Pena: Yeah, I wasn't sure about this Guadalupe one, she's just kind of having a big, kind of, insight into herself or something.
- 9:01Tad Eggleston: Well, I think… I think we're seeing that she's got some… like, just like her husband is still totally in love with Pipo, she still kinda has a thing for Sergio.
- 9:16Tad Eggleston: You know…
- 9:18Maria Pena: Yo.
- 9:21Tad Eggleston: You know, and I've always kind of thought that part of that relationship was, okay, I can't have Sergio, so I'll have Sergio's…
- 9:28Tad Eggleston: Dad.
- 9:31Maria Pena: Yeah.
- 9:35Maria Pena: But I didn't understand if she's talking about how she's very volatile, and people treat her like she's about to go off, and I was thinking, I don't remember that.
- 9:44Tad Eggleston: No, she always seems really, really chill to me.
- 9:48Maria Pena: Yeah.
- 9:49Marisol: Guadalupe is not… I think she may be one of the…
- 9:53Marisol: least aggressive members of… between her siblings?
- 9:58Maria Pena: Yeah.
- 9:59Maria Pena: But she's… obviously thinks that… That she's, you know, that she's seen as…
- 10:08Tad Eggleston: Well, and I wonder if that's, like, just from… Fire explosion.
- 10:13Tad Eggleston: like…
- 10:16Tad Eggleston: is it possible that that's, like, literally just, like, her response to the stuff we've seen? Because I feel like there was a scene where she was, like.
- 10:28Tad Eggleston: One point harder than… than… I'm used to her being…
- 10:35Maria Pena: Yeah.
- 10:36Tad Eggleston: and she…
- 10:36Maria Pena: to assist.
- 10:37Tad Eggleston: like…
- 10:39Maria Pena: He's still beating herself up over it.
- 10:43Maria Pena: Right, you can… yeah, but, you know, if you've just gone back to the beginning and.
- 10:48Tad Eggleston: Yeah, the back-to-cable… no, the back-to-cable access, I guess. I think she's still…
- 10:55Tad Eggleston: talking about how mean she is for… for saying that because they split up, it's back to cable access. That… I think… I feel like that's the mean line, so, like, this is actually more, how…
- 11:12Tad Eggleston: how good
- 11:15Tad Eggleston: Guadalupe is overall, that, like, a whole issue later, she's still beating herself up because with nobody even actually hearing her.
- 11:27Maria Pena: She said. She made a comment.
- 11:31Tad Eggleston: I'm such a bitch!
- 11:33Maria Pena: I thought it was bad, I was just noticing it's all salt balloons.
- 11:37Tad Eggleston: Yeah, it's all Thought Bubbles. She's dwelling on it the entire time.
- 11:41Maria Pena: She's just, you know, thinking, thinking… she's in her head a lot, I think.
- 11:47Maria Pena: Like, completely in her head. Everywhere.
- 11:52Maria Pena: Anyway, yeah, interesting. So yeah, that, that Guadalupez story kind of… I was like, I had to read it twice, like, what's she going on about?
- 12:03Tad Eggleston: I think, I think, like, it's really defining Guadalupe as that, like, ultimate insecure…
- 12:11Tad Eggleston: Always convinced that she's not doing the right thing, even though she always does the right thing.
- 12:19Maria Pena: Hmm.
- 12:20Maria Pena: And I guess that's what she was like when she was a little kid.
- 12:23Tad Eggleston: Yeah.
- 12:24Maria Pena: I was always observing everybody.
- 12:27Maria Pena: noticing, you know, Maricela blowing up with…
- 12:31Tad Eggleston: Very much a rule follower.
- 12:33Marisol: Yup.
- 12:33Maria Pena: Yeah, and kind of being a peacemaker, and the…
- 12:37Maria Pena: Yeah, yeah, okay.
- 12:40Maria Pena: Oh, very relatable, really. Oh, I love these first… these three, top panels of, Ophelia getting old, and with the same story with Luba, like, oh, it's Luba going out, Ophelia going, you're leaving your kids behind!
- 12:56Tad Eggleston: Yeah.
- 12:57Maria Pena: I love that.
- 13:01Maria Pena: And Lupa's not pulling the blocks anymore.
- 13:06Marisol: Nope. Nope.
- 13:07Tad Eggleston: No, no.
- 13:08Maria Pena: She's getting a bit older, even her enormous bosomed cat.
- 13:13Maria Pena: That's not having an effect on whatever that guy's saying.
- 13:19Tad Eggleston: And then, and then, like…
- 13:21Maria Pena: Yeah, and then…
- 13:23Marisol: Yeah.
- 13:23Maria Pena: fight… fighting with Ophelion, she nearly…
- 13:26Tad Eggleston: Maybe if he was blindfolded?
- 13:29Maria Pena: Yeah, huh?
- 13:30Tad Eggleston: That's not what you say.
- 13:31Maria Pena: It's a near miss?
- 13:33Maria Pena: It was a near-miss of a punch. It took Ophelia by surprise.
- 13:40Maria Pena: Is this the beginning of some kind of, you know, Full out.
- 13:45Maria Pena: Between the two of them.
- 13:50Marisol: Because Ophelia and Lupa have been together just… For so many years now.
- 13:57Tad Eggleston: Forever.
- 13:57Maria Pena: So long, yeah. You know, Fed has always been there for her.
- 14:03Tad Eggleston: And then this is where we actually find out that we're four issues behind on Lubiz Comics and Stories.
- 14:11Marisol: Oh, boy.
- 14:14Maria Pena: Lover, Nectar and eggs.
- 14:16Maria Pena: Explaining that…
- 14:17Tad Eggleston: Yeah, this is definitely a, a period where, where,
- 14:24Maria Pena: This is a maniac.
- 14:25Tad Eggleston: Beto was much more prolific than Jaime.
- 14:29Tad Eggleston: I like the back cover pictures.
- 14:33Maria Pena: Yeah, the family photos, and then on her own, frits, and her extremely pale skin.
- 14:41Marisol: Yes.
- 14:43Maria Pena: What's with Guadalupe, lifting her top and lowering her jeans in the second and the third?
- 14:52Maria Pena: What the hell's that? Is it, like.
- 14:56Tad Eggleston: I mean, it looks like she… well, I mean, first.
- 14:59Maria Pena: Showing…
- 15:00Tad Eggleston: She's got her husband there.
- 15:02Marisol: Hmm.
- 15:03Maria Pena: But second, it looks like she's almost trying to shock.
- 15:07Tad Eggleston: Fritz?
- 15:09Marisol: Fritz?
- 15:11Maria Pena: Or, or kind of, maybe they've got the same, the same shape, stomach.
- 15:18Tad Eggleston: Maybe.
- 15:18Maria Pena: Maybe she can, craft some.
- 15:20Tad Eggleston: Well, and actually.
- 15:21Maria Pena: If she really tries.
- 15:23Tad Eggleston: Even Boots has the bare midriff, so maybe it's.
- 15:27Maria Pena: Yeah.
- 15:27Tad Eggleston: Her, like.
- 15:28Maria Pena: Oh, everybody else is showing their belly.
- 15:31Tad Eggleston: I suppose I'm supposed to, too.
- 15:34Maria Pena: Yay!
- 15:34Marisol: Yeah.
- 15:35Maria Pena: Yeah, I think that's exactly what it is.
- 15:37Tad Eggleston: Yeah.
- 15:39Maria Pena: Okay.
- 15:42Maria Pena: Yeah, no, it's a great little color.
- 15:45Maria Pena: Strip?
- 15:48Marisol: You get to see.
- 15:50Maria Pena: Oh, wait, so she starts at the top, and she's got all her clothes on, she's got her therapist get-up.
- 15:56Tad Eggleston: Yeah, that's the therapist.
- 15:57Maria Pena: All the, all the different kinds.
- 15:59Tad Eggleston: Then you've got Ant, Yeah. Right.
- 16:03Maria Pena: Yeah.
- 16:05Tad Eggleston: And I almost feel like this one is…
- 16:10Maria Pena: Well, Guadalupe was.
- 16:11Tad Eggleston: Colorado and Guadalupe.
- 16:13Marisol: Yeah.
- 16:14Tad Eggleston: Yeah, visiting, like, the set.
- 16:18Tad Eggleston: On one of the times where they were on Dora Lisa's show?
- 16:22Maria Pena: Yeah, yeah.
- 16:23Tad Eggleston: And then you've got her hanging out with Pipo and Sergio and Fortunato.
- 16:29Marisol: That's not fortunate.
- 16:31Tad Eggleston: No, that's not Fortunato. But it is another guy that she slept with, because you can tell that she's sitting there going, I am in a picture with 3 different people I've been naked with, and I don't think they know.
- 16:45Marisol: Oh my god, that's right.
- 16:47Maria Pena: Like, I'm a bad girl, so I'm gonna keep my glasses on so that… Right.
- 16:53Tad Eggleston: Then you've got the sister and her niece and nephew, and you can tell that, like, she's close to Venus, and there's, like, the stuff going on.
- 17:03Maria Pena: Yeah.
- 17:04Tad Eggleston: And then she's almost the hanger-on with Doralese and whatnot.
- 17:09Tad Eggleston: And then with her sister in Kamo.
- 17:11Maria Pena: That's Maricela, and hopefully I am.
- 17:14Tad Eggleston: I'm sorry.
- 17:15Maria Pena: Luba and Carmel?
- 17:17Maria Pena: Yeah, no, well, the release is there, but, that's very similar.
- 17:22Tad Eggleston: Yeah.
- 17:23Marisol: Luba with her trusty hammer, taking it wherever she goes.
- 17:27Maria Pena: Yes.
- 17:30Tad Eggleston: And she's gonna come on in a, in a formal… Yeah, that's some sort of formal thing that she went to with,
- 17:37Tad Eggleston: And then…
- 17:38Maria Pena: Just…
- 17:38Tad Eggleston: the…
- 17:40Maria Pena: Just burning…
- 17:41Tad Eggleston: Probably the least sexy naked pose Fritz has ever done.
- 17:46Maria Pena: Yeah.
- 17:48Tad Eggleston: It's like a mugshot without clothes.
- 17:50Tad Eggleston: Oh, yeah.
- 17:57Maria Pena: Yeah, that was.
- 17:59Tad Eggleston: But I think, in some ways, it also teases what's next, because we haven't gotten into Fritz's movie career yet, and I know it's coming…
- 18:07Tad Eggleston: Soon.
- 18:08Maria Pena: Oh, okay.
- 18:09Marisol: Oh.
- 18:10Maria Pena: Spoiler alert.
- 18:12Marisol: I forgot Fritz was in movies.
- 18:17Tad Eggleston: So, measles number 6, covers not from.
- 18:20Maria Pena: Yeah, this is the one I actually read.
- 18:22Tad Eggleston: Yeah, yeah.
- 18:23Tad Eggleston: I do like the… the… the Venus with the guitar.
- 18:28Maria Pena: Yeah, that's right.
- 18:28Tad Eggleston: On the title page.
- 18:30Tad Eggleston: And then… You've got Venus essentially turning into a teenager.
- 18:36Tad Eggleston: Let me… Let me…
- 18:39Maria Pena: Karina's having a boom.
- 18:42Tad Eggleston: Yeah.
- 18:44Tad Eggleston: And… But then…
- 18:45Maria Pena: Mom gives her the coin.
- 18:47Tad Eggleston: my… well, specifically the Indian Head, Buffalo Back, Nickel, and… and… That gets her… her…
- 18:58Tad Eggleston: Brain going and brings her back.
- 19:01Tad Eggleston: So mom still knows her.
- 19:04Maria Pena: Yeah.
- 19:06Maria Pena: There's some serotonin or something.
- 19:09Tad Eggleston: So it's that… it's that cute, cute two-pager.
- 19:13Tad Eggleston: Birthday Bash. This is…
- 19:15Maria Pena: Oh, so Mario, yeah.
- 19:17Marisol: Oh!
- 19:17Tad Eggleston: This is a very different Mario.
- 19:21Maria Pena: Yeah.
- 19:23Tad Eggleston: You know, this is much more playful, I think, than we're used to seeing Mario.
- 19:29Tad Eggleston: Still some high detail stuff.
- 19:34Maria Pena: Hmm.
- 19:36Tad Eggleston: But… I love the monster here. EAT SOME CAKE!
- 19:46Maria Pena: Oh, I thought that was a cave! Oh, shit.
- 19:50Tad Eggleston: Mmm.
- 19:50Maria Pena: It's the monstage mouth.
- 19:52Marisol: Why did I?
- 19:56Maria Pena: Yeah, right.
- 19:58Maria Pena: Yeah, it's like Mary Poppins, that lady. She comes in and solves their problem. It's a cake.
- 20:06Maria Pena: Yeah, that's what it reminds me. You'll get my bill.
- 20:13Tad Eggleston: Lady with the alligator purse.
- 20:16Maria Pena: So there's some interesting… yeah, literally, yeah.
- 20:21Maria Pena: There's some interesting characters, like that cop that's kind of like a scribble, it's kind of interesting, and…
- 20:31Tad Eggleston: Yeah, no, it's… like, it… I like it.
- 20:34Maria Pena: Very…
- 20:35Tad Eggleston: I like it. I think I like it more than I've liked most other Mario…
- 20:39Maria Pena: I love the beat… the beat when, yeah.
- 20:45Tad Eggleston: Go ahead.
- 20:46Maria Pena: Oh, no, no, sorry, no, go on.
- 20:48Tad Eggleston: I…
- 20:49Maria Pena: Yeah, you got it.
- 20:51Tad Eggleston: Yeah, I, I was just saying, I, I, I think…
- 20:55Tad Eggleston: I think being looser suits it.
- 21:00Maria Pena: Yeah, I like that thing where the guy goes, get your shoes off the table, but the shoes have mouths, so they belong on the table. They're having a snack.
- 21:15Tad Eggleston: Yeah, this one was just fun.
- 21:17Marisol: Yeah.
- 21:19Tad Eggleston: It's fun. And, and cake… cake solves everything.
- 21:24Maria Pena: Yes.
- 21:24Marisol: Fix everything better.
- 21:27Maria Pena: Alright, I…
- 21:28Tad Eggleston: of Beto Monsters on the back page.
- 21:32Tad Eggleston: And then into… we get… we get Devil Venus on the.
- 21:37Marisol: Hmm.
- 21:40Tad Eggleston: This… the… the amount of Hernandez content in this book, Issue 7 of.
- 21:47Maria Pena: Follow this.
- 21:48Tad Eggleston: Having to be…
- 21:48Maria Pena: That's better, though.
- 21:50Tad Eggleston: Very, very difficult to read on the air.
- 21:53Tad Eggleston: There you go.
- 21:56Maria Pena: That, wasn't that better, though? That, that, that, that wordless one with the, eyeballs?
- 22:03Maria Pena: I think that was fiddle.
- 22:05Tad Eggleston: This one?
- 22:06Maria Pena: Oh, maybe not.
- 22:10Maria Pena: Shit, I don't know, sure.
- 22:12Marisol: Maybe not.
- 22:13Tad Eggleston: He's only credited with the Venus story.
- 22:16Maria Pena: Oh, okay.
- 22:18Tad Eggleston: Yeah, Sam Henderson.
- 22:19Maria Pena: I can pay.
- 22:22Maria Pena: Okay.
- 22:23Maria Pena: Okay, bye.
- 22:26Maria Pena: I think it's got a certain beta-ishness about it.
- 22:31Tad Eggleston: No, I, I can see where you're… where you're coming from.
- 22:35Maria Pena: Yeah.
- 22:38Tad Eggleston: And it's that kind of nonsensical.
- 22:41Maria Pena: abstract. He had a story that Beto does.
- 22:47Maria Pena: Alright.
- 22:49Maria Pena: So, what's going on here?
- 22:52Maria Pena: Venus buys a cookie?
- 22:54Tad Eggleston: Venus drops the cookie, and is sad.
- 22:56Maria Pena: another cookie.
- 22:57Tad Eggleston: The guy gives her another cookie?
- 23:00Tad Eggleston: 5-second rule. So it's about the 5-second rules. Rule.
- 23:05Marisol: Yep.
- 23:06Maria Pena: The first taken first year.
- 23:09Maria Pena: That's very cute.
- 23:12Maria Pena: So while she debates, about the 5-second rule, the time passes, and it's like, I can't eat it.
- 23:20Maria Pena: And the guy gives her another one, and…
- 23:23Maria Pena: And she drops half of it.
- 23:26Maria Pena: Was that half of it she dropped?
- 23:29Marisol: I think she dropped the whole thing.
- 23:30Tad Eggleston: I think she dropped the whole thing again.
- 23:32Tad Eggleston: I don't think she's managed to take a bite of either cookie.
- 23:36Maria Pena: No, so I guess it all starts again. It's very cute, like, I think kids will enjoy this.
- 23:43Tad Eggleston: Meh… And that's… that's it for Hernandez.
- 23:50Maria Pena: Okay.
- 23:51Tad Eggleston: Which is why we went ahead and went all the way through to measles 8, which has our.
- 23:58Maria Pena: Hi, Nikkova!
- 23:59Tad Eggleston: leads off.
- 24:01Tad Eggleston: with low supersonicose.
- 24:05Tad Eggleston: -Oh.
- 24:08Maria Pena: And Venus…
- 24:09Tad Eggleston: It gives us an actual story from them.
- 24:12Maria Pena: California's number one… Versus film, he took care of himself.
- 24:18Tad Eggleston: So we've got grandma inviting them to dinner.
- 24:23Tad Eggleston: And they're trying to hide the newspaper. I actually just noticed that Dad is also soaking his feet.
- 24:29Maria Pena: Luke with his boots on.
- 24:32Tad Eggleston: With his boots on. Apparently, superhero dads soak their feet with their boots on.
- 24:38Marisol: Who knew?
- 24:40Maria Pena: I don't know if my son escapes from prison? Oh my god.
- 24:44Maria Pena: After 40 years?
- 24:45Tad Eggleston: Cheers.
- 24:46Tad Eggleston: Wow.
- 24:46Maria Pena: And this is where we find out…
- 24:49Tad Eggleston: Yeah, that this is… this is Grandma's old hero, but also they… they had a security projecto door, and
- 24:59Tad Eggleston: Well, she had trouble getting out.
- 25:02Marisol: Oh, man.
- 25:03Maria Pena: That's, like, cartoonish, you know, when they… Right. Very, what is it, the Wally Coyote…
- 25:12Maria Pena: Yeah. Hitting a metal thing, and…
- 25:15Maria Pena: So this must be her old foe from her younger days. Right, right, right.
- 25:21Tad Eggleston: I'm not sure. I was a mere infant when he was incarcerated, but I do know what we're dealing with.
- 25:27Maria Pena: Hi.
- 25:27Tad Eggleston: A rather sleepy foe.
- 25:30Maria Pena: Mother was sad.
- 25:32Tad Eggleston: On a number of occasions how difficult it was to track him down low those 40 years ago.
- 25:38Tad Eggleston: And that's when the team was Dad, Grandpa, Sonny, son-in-law, and of course, mother, who was daughter then, till she gave birth to me.
- 25:49Maria Pena: Right.
- 25:51Tad Eggleston: And does she have a mustache there?
- 25:56Maria Pena: And does he have a little pie?
- 25:58Tad Eggleston: Yeah, he definitely has a little pipe.
- 26:05Marisol: No, I think that's just the weird lines between, like, her upper lip and then.
- 26:09Tad Eggleston: Yeah, it might, it might be…
- 26:11Maria Pena: Might be.
- 26:11Tad Eggleston: It's supposed to show a, yeah.
- 26:14Maria Pena: I think it's just, yeah.
- 26:16Tad Eggleston: Hmm.
- 26:19Maria Pena: She's got pronounced, you know, marionette lines.
- 26:24Maria Pena: You've got the continuing.
- 26:30Tad Eggleston: Shi, shh… Yeah…
- 26:37Tad Eggleston: He was selling baby formula that was turning all of the babies in town evil. And
- 26:45Tad Eggleston: They were hot on his trail. Unfortunately, it was the police who put him out of business.
- 26:53Tad Eggleston: Thus, 40 years later, we merely remain California's number one superfamily. Believe me, it's been hard to live down all these years.
- 27:04Maria Pena: Wales.
- 27:04Tad Eggleston: They might… they…
- 27:05Maria Pena: Those Supersonicos were hot on his trail, for if we could nab him, we could claim the title of the number one Super.
- 27:11Tad Eggleston: Number one. America, maybe even the world.
- 27:14Maria Pena: In the world, okay.
- 27:16Tad Eggleston: So…
- 27:17Marisol: Awesome.
- 27:17Maria Pena: So that's why it's not… it is not America, it's only California.
- 27:21Tad Eggleston: Only California's, because it wound up being the police that caught the bad guy.
- 27:27Maria Pena: Yeah.
- 27:29Tad Eggleston: So… When we get there, the kids are there, and it turns out to be a trap.
- 27:37Maria Pena: I love that house.
- 27:38Tad Eggleston: Yeah, yeah.
- 27:40Maria Pena: I love that building with the crazy windows.
- 27:44Maria Pena: up, we're caught in a trap. We can't walk out.
- 27:51Marisol: And now his plan's continuing to…
- 27:53Marisol: Feed more children the formula, the new and approved formula.
- 27:58Tad Eggleston: That's right, that's right.
- 28:00Marisol: Evil.
- 28:00Tad Eggleston: But then… Then… Mother shows up.
- 28:07Maria Pena: mother.
- 28:09Maria Pena: She's ricocheting everywhere. Oh, that's funny, she… she,
- 28:17Maria Pena: She ends up hitting him in the stomach, well…
- 28:20Tad Eggleston: Hitting him in the stomach.
- 28:22Tad Eggleston: Going through and… and taking his head off.
- 28:27Maria Pena: Well, but his hair is attached to a tiny body that.
- 28:33Tad Eggleston: Anybody here.
- 28:34Maria Pena: So most of the body was just a, I don't know, like a prosthetic body.
- 28:39Tad Eggleston: Mother to the rescue. Yay!
- 28:44Tad Eggleston: And that's the end. Cute.
- 28:46Maria Pena: And what's that, little, thing at the back that looks like, some kind of monster behind Mada?
- 28:53Marisol: Little, like, squid…
- 28:54Maria Pena: Who knows?
- 28:55Marisol: thing, I think.
- 28:56Maria Pena: Some kind of octopusy, octopus kind of stuff.
- 29:00Tad Eggleston: Oh, yeah, yeah. Teddy goes.
- 29:04Maria Pena: Where did that come from?
- 29:05Tad Eggleston: Though maybe the story's not quite over.
- 29:08Maria Pena: Maybe, maybe they're a little grabber.
- 29:13Maria Pena: Yeah, it was cute.
- 29:15Tad Eggleston: It was. And then the Venus story is… creepy.
- 29:21Maria Pena: Wow.
- 29:22Tad Eggleston: That morning, I woke up, and everything was different.
- 29:26Tad Eggleston: I couldn't find any clothes, so I stayed in my pajamas.
- 29:30Tad Eggleston: My slippers weren't the same either, but I like them better than my real ones.
- 29:36Maria Pena: They look like duck fat.
- 29:38Tad Eggleston: Like duck feet.
- 29:40Maria Pena: My room is so distorted.
- 29:43Tad Eggleston: Yeah, my bedroom door was locked. I had to think of a different way out. I was out of the house, sneaky as a cat.
- 29:51Tad Eggleston: The morning air was cool and crisp, just the way I wish it was all year round.
- 29:57Tad Eggleston: When I landed, there was Henderson stuck inside a tree.
- 30:02Tad Eggleston: So, who's Henderson?
- 30:05Tad Eggleston: Surgeon, it's an artist, but I don't… off the top of my head, I don't remember who Henderson is, though. I feel like it might be somebody from measles.
- 30:14Tad Eggleston: Now that I think.
- 30:15Maria Pena: Oh, I see.
- 30:17Maria Pena: Oh yeah, that makes sense.
- 30:19Tad Eggleston: Not this issue, though.
- 30:21Marisol: Yeah, it's like, wasn't, like, Sam Henderson the guy.
- 30:25Tad Eggleston: That sounds right.
- 30:26Marisol: the ice capades that we saw.
- 30:28Marisol: Alright. Well, and there's a reason that I think that, so we'll continue reading here.
- 30:34Tad Eggleston: He looked very embarrassed. I decided to move on. I sure didn't want him to feel any worse than he already did.
- 30:42Tad Eggleston: Wood ring.
- 30:44Tad Eggleston: Jim would ring.
- 30:45Tad Eggleston: I'm assuming.
- 30:47Tad Eggleston: Stop me for direction. Jim Woodring did, Frank?
- 30:54Tad Eggleston: It's a… it's a… it's a comic from this era.
- 30:57Maria Pena: Oh, good.
- 30:58Tad Eggleston: And I know, I know Natalia is a… is a fan.
- 31:05Maria Pena: Okay.
- 31:06Tad Eggleston: Stop me for directions. He was looking for a better mousetrap.
- 31:10Tad Eggleston: He decided to continue his search at a much slower pace.
- 31:14Maria Pena: So he melted down.
- 31:16Tad Eggleston: He melted, yeah. I began to feel hungry. Wiseman was still selling cupcakes on the street.
- 31:24Tad Eggleston: I don't have any money, he said. I could sing for a cupcake. I sang What a Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood.
- 31:32Tad Eggleston: Suerte.
- 31:33Tad Eggleston: shouted from a passing airplane to keep the noise down before I knew it.
- 31:39Tad Eggleston: All that was left were two cupcakes.
- 31:42Tad Eggleston: I couldn't decide between them, because then I'd feel sorry for the one I'd have to leave behind.
- 31:50Maria Pena: It was the two Hernandez brothers who've been missing for 6 weeks.
- 31:55Maria Pena: Oh, they're in there. In the cupcake.
- 31:59Tad Eggleston: Yep, yep. I put them where I knew they'd be safe. No cats could bother them there.
- 32:05Tad Eggleston: Inside the house, Ryan was waiting for the World Cup to come on TV. The channel kept changing by itself over and over.
- 32:14Tad Eggleston: That eerie electrical sound he makes sent me back to my adventure for the day.
- 32:19Tad Eggleston: Looked like the police were closer to solving the case of the vandalized Altergot studio.
- 32:25Tad Eggleston: Officer Trondheim ordered me to back off, as there might be trouble in the plumbing.
- 32:33Tad Eggleston: I told him and told him to leave the place alone because Dr. Altergott liked to fix his own plumbing. As usual, that Officer Trondheim.
- 32:43Tad Eggleston: cried to get his way. It's a Lewis Trondheim reference.
- 32:49Tad Eggleston: Was that Dr. Althargott leaving the scene in disguise? Maybe Reynolds would know what was going on. His studio is easy to find because of the miniature helicopters at the door.
- 33:02Tad Eggleston: Nobody was there, of course. Why does he bother with the place if nobody ever stays there for more than a few minutes at a time?
- 33:10Tad Eggleston: I was beginning to ask too many questions. Logic was no tool for a time like this. I needed pliers.
- 33:19Tad Eggleston: The whole time Reynolds was on the corner, singing up people… signing up people to vote. He pretended he didn't see me. I pretended in return.
- 33:30Tad Eggleston: I remembered I had credit at Bordeaux's taco Stand. While I ate my huevos con Carrizo breakfast.
- 33:38Tad Eggleston: She was so excited to talk about the cloudy weather and the destructive rains to come, and I love that the taco stand is also a wolfman.
- 33:47Maria Pena: Superhole.
- 33:50Maria Pena: That's great.
- 33:51Tad Eggleston: I had scarred long enough. It was time to face the music.
- 33:55Tad Eggleston: And get to the office. There they would have the key to my bedroom door.
- 34:02Tad Eggleston: The third Hernandez brother, there are two more, not in the comic book business, was guarding the front entrance. How to get in.
- 34:12Maria Pena: There's a scenario, for example.
- 34:16Tad Eggleston: The wood ring methods seemed to be the best way all around.
- 34:20Tad Eggleston: I don't think.
- 34:21Maria Pena: Oh.
- 34:22Tad Eggleston: His brother was even awake when I passed by him.
- 34:25Tad Eggleston: Upon entering the office, I noticed frantic…
- 34:29Tad Eggleston: Scratching noises, like those of a mouse trying to find its way out of a woodpile.
- 34:35Marisol: I love that they made Mario look like the face on the Pringles cans.
- 34:39Tad Eggleston: Yeah,
- 34:40Maria Pena: Hand…
- 34:41Marisol: Little mustache.
- 34:43Maria Pena: Yeah.
- 34:45Tad Eggleston: It was Bag, racking his brain, trying to meet a deadline. He stopped when he noticed me and stared like I had stolen something from him.
- 34:55Tad Eggleston: Everything I had on me was mine. Even my slippers were back to their original fit.
- 35:02Tad Eggleston: In the office, proper… And Tom, yeah, growth.
- 35:08Maria Pena: Gary.
- 35:09Tad Eggleston: Yeah, that's right.
- 35:10Maria Pena: Right?
- 35:10Tad Eggleston: And Kim Thompson.
- 35:12Tad Eggleston: We're fixing a fax machine. I entered with bated breath. I asked for the key to my bedroom. They only began to laugh.
- 35:21Tad Eggleston: Why didn't I just use the wood ring method to slip under the door? I was too embarrassed to answer.
- 35:28Tad Eggleston: Embarrassed, like Henderson, stuck in the tree. Like Altergott, about that plumbing problem. Like Reynolds soliciting voters.
- 35:37Tad Eggleston: Thinking fast, I raced and grabbed the key, and was out of the office before you could say zip.
- 35:44Tad Eggleston: I got home with a few distractions and made it back to the bedroom without a hitch. The key was as pretty as I remembered.
- 35:52Tad Eggleston: Into the lock, the key disappeared. I could smell the cupcakes mom was baking, and I heard my little sister singing, along with Mr. Rogers.
- 36:02Maria Pena: I love that.
- 36:04Marisol: So cute.
- 36:06Maria Pena: I wish I knew all the references to comic…
- 36:09Marisol: I know.
- 36:10Maria Pena: Facebook.
- 36:10Tad Eggleston: Yeah.
- 36:11Maria Pena: But… but I, you know, it's cool.
- 36:14Tad Eggleston: I mean, what I can say is, like, I recognize enough of them that I'm certain that every one is a reference, so…
- 36:21Maria Pena: Yeah, yeah.
- 36:24Tad Eggleston: I'm gonna have to, at some point, make the list and Google the names.
- 36:27Maria Pena: Yeah, exactly.
- 36:30Tad Eggleston: Yep, there's Sam Henderson, and he's the one that did the Capricious canine.
- 36:35Maria Pena: Yes.
- 36:37Maria Pena: And she was very funny.
- 36:39Tad Eggleston: Jim… Jim Woodring did Professor Eggrod.
- 36:43Maria Pena: Rico.
- 36:43Tad Eggleston: issue. Rick Altergott did the boomerang. Lewis Trendheim did Space on the Loose.
- 36:50Maria Pena: Steven Weissman?
- 36:51Tad Eggleston: Yeah, I was literally going through the people who helped with the back issues.
- 36:56Marisol: Yeah, yeah.
- 36:58Tad Eggleston: Okay.
- 36:58Maria Pena: And this, and… yeah.
- 37:01Marisol: Nice.
- 37:02Maria Pena: Hmm, cool.
- 37:06Maria Pena: I love it. That was great. That was fun.
- 37:08Tad Eggleston: And that was the final issue of measles.
- 37:13Tad Eggleston: So… Let's talk some favorite panels. And then next time.
- 37:21Tad Eggleston: I mean, there are a couple of different ways… I mean, if we… if we want to keep having both, we're going to have to continue reading two issues for a while, so we'll be starting Love and Rockets Volume 2 next time, because that's where we'll find some Jaime. Do we want to try to get…
- 37:37Tad Eggleston: caught up with Beto faster, especially since we just discovered that the first four issues of Luba and her family had already been going on simultaneously.
- 37:47Marisol: I know, right?
- 37:48Tad Eggleston: So do we…
- 37:50Maria Pena: Yeah.
- 37:50Tad Eggleston: like, Luba number 8 and Luba and her family number one, or do we want to… or, I'm sorry, Luba number 9, or do we want to just stick to 2 at a time, and do Luba number 9, Luba number 10, and then go back and do the Luba and her family?
- 38:04Maria Pena: It might… it might be an idea, because they're… they'll… otherwise, the… the storylines might not match.
- 38:12Tad Eggleston: Right.
- 38:13Tad Eggleston: Okay, then she…
- 38:14Marisol: I think it's confusing.
- 38:16Maria Pena: Yeah, so maybe let's finish Luba, and then we can do.
- 38:19Tad Eggleston: And then go back to Lubin and her family.
- 38:21Maria Pena: Lunar family in order.
- 38:23Tad Eggleston: But we'll… but we'll also start.
- 38:26Maria Pena: is.
- 38:27Tad Eggleston: Volume 2.
- 38:28Maria Pena: Volume 2, yeah.
- 38:29Tad Eggleston: Man.
- 38:30Maria Pena: Oh, it's a lot of bed.
- 38:30Tad Eggleston: 20 issues of Volume 2?
- 38:35Maria Pena: Yeah.
- 38:36Tad Eggleston: And then on to news stories, and… And then volume.
- 38:40Maria Pena: Wow.
- 38:40Tad Eggleston: Then we gotta catch up on Albedo's…
- 38:45Tad Eggleston: in-world B-movies, starring Fritz. Oh, God.
- 38:51Marisol: I'll have to read.
- 38:53Tad Eggleston: We are officially… we are… well, we are officially at the point where we could be, like…
- 39:01Tad Eggleston: Reading just the issues within, like, the next…
- 39:07Tad Eggleston: Year and a half, depending on how many weeks we have to take off.
- 39:13Tad Eggleston: So, yeah.
- 39:17Maria Pena: It's been up.
- 39:18Tad Eggleston: Right, I'm loving it.
- 39:19Maria Pena: Good idea, yeah.
- 39:20Tad Eggleston: I don't… I don't necessarily… I'm not actually necessarily looking forward to keep it catching up, because that would mean that we're at a point where we only have to get together every, what, 4 months?
- 39:33Maria Pena: Yeah, yeah.
- 39:34Marisol: Yeah, so maybe, you know, this…
- 39:36Maria Pena: Yeah, let's not overdo it, you know?
- 39:38Tad Eggleston: No, we shouldn't overdo it. I just… I do like having something from both of them.
- 39:43Tad Eggleston: At 1.
- 39:44Marisol: Right.
- 39:47Tad Eggleston: And, you know, at some point, we might have to start rereading them where we do a storyline together, and talk about…
- 39:53Tad Eggleston: The difference between having
- 39:56Tad Eggleston: you know, how does, say, Death of Speedy feel different when you read it all together than…
- 40:03Tad Eggleston: Spread out over…
- 40:06Marisol: Several issues.
- 40:06Tad Eggleston: 10 weeks while you're also reading?
- 40:09Marisol: Beto stuff. How does Poison River feel when you read it together, rather than spread out over 12 weeks while you're also reading Jaime stuff? There… there are a million different ways that we can look at Love and Rockets.
- 40:24Tad Eggleston: We don't have to quit. That's all I'm saying.
- 40:31Marisol: Well, as for favorite panels, while we're here on measles number 8.
- 40:36Tad Eggleston: Well, I mean, yeah, we have to have it, because that's…
- 40:38Marisol: Cover was my favorite, honestly.
- 40:41Tad Eggleston: The cover is… is great.
- 40:44Marisol: Yeah, because you got sis sunbathing, the kids making a sand sculpture of grandma.
- 40:52Marisol: while she's trying not to crash into it, and then you see Pop in the background.
- 40:58Maria Pena: Sweetie's pipes.
- 40:59Marisol: through the newspaper.
- 41:01Maria Pena: Yeah. He's a baby.
- 41:03Marisol: He's just sitting on his chest.
- 41:05Tad Eggleston: Yeah.
- 41:06Maria Pena: Great, great stuff.
- 41:09Tad Eggleston: It is a very good cover.
- 41:11Marisol: So cute.
- 41:13Maria Pena: Yeah, yeah, go on.
- 41:16Tad Eggleston: I… I could've… I could've picked that.
- 41:20Tad Eggleston: But I think I have to go with the pinballing…
- 41:24Maria Pena: Yeah.
- 41:26Tad Eggleston: slash head.
- 41:28Maria Pena: Yeah.
- 41:31Tad Eggleston: That's just… that's… It's like…
- 41:35Marisol: Too funny.
- 41:35Tad Eggleston: We're tuning at its best.
- 41:38Maria Pena: Yes.
- 41:39Maria Pena: And you can see the whole trajectory of everything, right?
- 41:42Tad Eggleston: Yeah.
- 41:44Tad Eggleston: the ocean.
- 41:44Maria Pena: Mine.
- 41:45Tad Eggleston: That's… I'm headed to Cartoon's Crossroads, and I'm excited… I'm always excited for that con, period, but the two exhibits right now at the Billy Ireland are Carol Tyler has an exhibit.
- 41:58Tad Eggleston: which I'm really looking forward to, and got to talk to her about it, so I'm looking forward to it even more. But the other exhibit is called Motion Lines, and it's just explaining… it's just exploring motion in comics across
- 42:13Tad Eggleston: years and genres, and countries, and I'm really looking forward to that.
- 42:19Maria Pena: So… Yeah.
- 42:21Tad Eggleston: Cool, yeah.
- 42:23Maria Pena: Is there… I mean, it's, you know, it's a language that… has transcended every…
- 42:32Maria Pena: every country that do comics, but also everybody does it a little bit different. You know, the European comics do it differently.
- 42:40Tad Eggleston: Right?
- 42:41Maria Pena: I… I think I'll pick that… that crazy house with the windows.
- 42:50Maria Pena: panel, just because I love that.
- 42:51Marisol: Fun one.
- 42:53Maria Pena: Yeah.
- 42:54Maria Pena: And I love that the… the…
- 42:57Maria Pena: the speeches coming from the top of the house, and they're flying around. It's just… just a… I just love that house. That's cool.
- 43:05Maria Pena: Gotta have interesting architecture.
- 43:08Tad Eggleston: It's like a beehive with… Round windows that have… Really weird interior frames.
- 43:18Maria Pena: Yeah, yeah.
- 43:20Tad Eggleston: Because they're not quite… Straight.
- 43:23Maria Pena: Yeah.
- 43:24Maria Pena: And then…
- 43:26Tad Eggleston: Crazy that all the windows different.
- 43:28Marisol: Yep.
- 43:29Maria Pena: Yep.
- 43:30Maria Pena: And I love the parallel lines that he's drawn, and their hand, you know, they'll…
- 43:34Tad Eggleston: Right. The beehive part itself is completely clean and straight and whatnot, and then the windows…
- 43:41Marisol: And you just have this…
- 43:42Tad Eggleston: Amazing.
- 43:42Marisol: Randomly sized windows.
- 43:45Maria Pena: Yeah. I mean, there's some really nice inking in that.
- 43:49Tad Eggleston: Oh, yeah.
- 43:50Maria Pena: I would have messed it up if I'd tried that.
- 43:53Tad Eggleston: Dang.
- 43:55Maria Pena: Yeah, so, yeah, I'm pretty happy with that.
- 43:59Tad Eggleston: Alright, so I am actually gonna say that my favorite Beto is also from this issue.
- 44:07Tad Eggleston: Where was it?
- 44:14Tad Eggleston: It was a Venus moment that was just so good when I went by it.
- 44:20Marisol: Hmm.
- 44:24Tad Eggleston: Listen.
- 44:25Tad Eggleston: Maybe slash?
- 44:33Tad Eggleston: Maybe it was Lash's issue.
- 44:38Tad Eggleston: Damn.
- 44:39Tad Eggleston: So let's… Let's go back into… I mean, do you guys know what we're looking for for.
- 44:47Tad Eggleston: roll.
- 44:48Maria Pena: No, not yet, I'm kind of quickly looking through the loop bar.
- 44:53Maria Pena: Because.
- 44:54Tad Eggleston: Oh, no, that's right. The one I love is the one where… the cookie is…
- 45:02Maria Pena: The foreground.
- 45:05Tad Eggleston: Yeah.
- 45:07Maria Pena: Yeah, that's cool.
- 45:08Maria Pena: Cookie POV. Cookie over the shoulder of the cookie, we would call it.
- 45:13Tad Eggleston: Right.
- 45:14Maria Pena: in, in, in… Bookie OTS. Right.
- 45:19Marisol: It makes me want a cookie, it looks so good.
- 45:22Tad Eggleston: It does.
- 45:23Tad Eggleston: It does.
- 45:25Marisol: I don't have any chocolate chip cookies.
- 45:31Maria Pena: Fairly.
- 45:33Maria Pena: Well, I like the, the opening of,
- 45:37Maria Pena: Luba, the Luba story with the sex club, and the… all the characters standing there with their cool outfits, and
- 45:48Maria Pena: boots in her little leather outfit. I thought that was cool.
- 45:51Tad Eggleston: Yeah, that was…
- 45:55Maria Pena: It's pretty cool. I liked it.
- 45:57Tad Eggleston: That was definitely…
- 45:59Maria Pena: Great. The bottom half of the first page here, yeah.
- 46:04Maria Pena: Yeah.
- 46:05Marisol: Oh, yeah.
- 46:08Maria Pena: All the different types of shoes, and that… that lady with her.
- 46:13Maria Pena: She kind of looks like more t-shirt or something at the bottom there.
- 46:16Marisol: Yeah, like a full body something.
- 46:19Maria Pena: Very cool.
- 46:22Maria Pena: I picked that.
- 46:24Marisol: I'll have to say for this, my favorite panels are the three panels.
- 46:29Marisol: I don't remember what page, but where we do the, close up onto boots.
- 46:36Tad Eggleston: Let's sad.
- 46:37Maria Pena: Oh, yes.
- 46:38Marisol: before.
- 46:38Tad Eggleston: Yeah, yeah, that was probably my runner-up.
- 46:42Maria Pena: Yeah.
- 46:43Tad Eggleston: Totally my, my, my bet.
- 46:45Marisol: I love…
- 46:46Tad Eggleston: Runner up.
- 46:47Marisol: Boots's expressions.
- 46:49Tad Eggleston: They're both so great at doing triptychs.
- 46:53Maria Pena: Yeah, the other triptych that was great was the, the, the Ophelia one, which is young, you know, middle-aged and all…
- 47:00Marisol: Hmm.
- 47:01Maria Pena: Luba the same thing, like, I thought that was… that was… that was great storytelling.
- 47:07Maria Pena: Anyone.
- 47:08Marisol: That was my runner-up.
- 47:10Marisol: Because I loved that transition.
- 47:12Tad Eggleston: Or she's just…
- 47:13Marisol: Basically saying the same thing throughout all these years, and she just gets older in each panel.
- 47:20Maria Pena: Yeah, and obviously Luba's not listening.
- 47:25Tad Eggleston: Alrighty.
- 47:27Tad Eggleston: Let's go look at Mario's story.
- 47:32Maria Pena: I am the teacher Mario Panwei.
- 47:40Maria Pena: Yep, 3 favorites.
- 47:45Maria Pena: Oh, awesome.
- 47:47Tad Eggleston: Issue 7 was an issue 6.
- 47:49Maria Pena: I think that, that cave one was great, the, the monster of the cave.
- 47:54Tad Eggleston: Yeah.
- 47:56Maria Pena: I think that's my favorite.
- 47:59Maria Pena: If I may take that one.
- 48:02Tad Eggleston: You may… I'm not gonna guarantee that I'm not gonna take it with you, but I'll see you.
- 48:08Tad Eggleston: everyone.
- 48:12Maria Pena: Because I think that's the clearest…
- 48:15Maria Pena: You know, Mario can be a bit confusing in his, setting up of the stuff. That's very clear, right?
- 48:24Tad Eggleston: Well, and I just… I love the dialogue there.
- 48:28Maria Pena: Yeah.
- 48:28Tad Eggleston: Give me a good glib and EAT SOME CAKE!
- 48:35Marisol: It just shrinks back down.
- 48:48Tad Eggleston: It gets your feet up.
- 48:50Tad Eggleston: Stable is possible for me.
- 48:53Maria Pena: It's very cute.
- 48:55Maria Pena: He's using some of the 22 panels.
- 48:59Tad Eggleston: techniques there with the silhouettes, and… Definitely.
- 49:11Tad Eggleston: My new boots ran away.
- 49:14Tad Eggleston: I think I'm actually gonna go with this… this…
- 49:18Maria Pena: That's sweet.
- 49:19Tad Eggleston: here.
- 49:21Maria Pena: Yeah.
- 49:22Marisol: The speedy slower.
- 49:23Tad Eggleston: Boots are running away.
- 49:25Maria Pena: Yeah.
- 49:28Maria Pena: Phew!
- 49:32Maria Pena: Yeah, that's good.
- 49:36Marisol: That's a good one.
- 49:44Marisol: I'll… I'll actually agree with Maria, the monster cave.
- 49:48Marisol: And eat some cake. It's probably my favorite panel of the story.
- 49:52Tad Eggleston: Do you know, I literally chose this panel
- 49:57Tad Eggleston: Just cause I had a feeling that it'd be all three of us picking to eat some.
- 50:03Marisol: There you go.
- 50:04Tad Eggleston: I didn't. Yeah.
- 50:07Marisol: Hey, it happens sometimes!
- 50:09Maria Pena: Yeah, it does, I mean…
- 50:10Tad Eggleston: No, it totally does. We had a…
- 50:13Maria Pena: No, in the joint.
- 50:14Tad Eggleston: For… for… for the…
- 50:23Tad Eggleston: for the… Heavy Metal Book Club, we actually do a…
- 50:30Tad Eggleston: best ongoing story, a best story, and a best panel. And we had an episode recently, and part of it was that the particular issue of heavy metal was kind of mediocre.
- 50:43Tad Eggleston: But another part of it was that there was just a, like, clear answer in all three categories. So despite the fact that there are four of us.
- 50:51Tad Eggleston: We had the same answer on every.
- 50:54Marisol: Nice.
- 50:57Tad Eggleston: So… yeah.
- 51:01Tad Eggleston: Well, that was fun. I'm looking forward to getting… into, like…
- 51:10Tad Eggleston: more traditional Love & Rockets issues again.
- 51:14Maria Pena: I really enjoyed…
- 51:14Marisol: I miss them.
- 51:15Maria Pena: your reading of the Venus story, it was fun.
- 51:18Tad Eggleston: Well, you know, I mean, maybe that's what we'll do sometime in the future, once we've caught up. We'll choose our favorite stories and just do read-alongs.
- 51:27Tad Eggleston: And, or, we'll ask them if we can do what we do with Santos Sisters, and we'll start making audio plays.
- 51:34Maria Pena: Oh, Lord.
- 51:39Maria Pena: We can try that. Yeah, we'll figure it out.
- 51:41Marisol: You don't sound too sure about that one.
- 51:45Maria Pena: I'm not an actress, not an actress.
- 51:51Tad Eggleston: So, I promised my wife breakfast, so it's already more brunch, but that's as much because of the washing machine being delivered, but I, we should wrap up.
- 52:04Tad Eggleston: It's so good to be back, and unfortunately, it'll be two weeks again, except that fortunately, because, you know, Cartoon Crossroads is next weekend, and, like, Maria, when it's safe to come back to the United States ever, Cartoon Crossroads is one of the things worth coming for.
- 52:21Tad Eggleston: One day you'll have to come down with me to Columbus, because it's…
- 52:27Tad Eggleston: it's just something else. I don't even know how to describe it. It's the one I like the most, though I've been told I need to get to HeroesCon in North Carolina, too, which is a little bit more superhero heavy, but…
- 52:40Tad Eggleston: But still, one of the cons that's focused… On comics, rather than…
- 52:48Maria Pena: Mmm.
- 52:50Tad Eggleston: pop culture.
- 52:51Marisol: Right.
- 52:52Tad Eggleston: This year is actually the first Comics Crossroads I've been to where…
- 52:58Tad Eggleston: There is a keynote that's not strictly
- 53:02Tad Eggleston: Comics, but it's because they've got the guy that, like.
- 53:08Tad Eggleston: was, like, led animation at Disney for, like, The Little Mermaid, and…
- 53:15Marisol: Oh, wow.
- 53:16Maria Pena: So it's very much cartoons.
- 53:18Tad Eggleston: Cartoons in, like, a classic motion cartoon sense.
- 53:23Maria Pena: Yeah.
- 53:23Marisol: Nice.
- 53:24Tad Eggleston: It's not, like… Oh, we've got this, do your meet and greet!
- 53:31Tad Eggleston: Which, I don't wanna… I don't want… some people like those, I don't actually totally… I don't necessarily want to be, like, completely bashing them, but, like, it's one of those things that's never made sense to me. Let me pay an extra 50 bucks so that I can stand in line for 2 hours to spend 5 seconds getting my picture taken with somebody.
- 53:51Marisol: Yep.
- 53:52Maria Pena: So you can say that you met them, yeah.
- 53:55Tad Eggleston: You know, I get the cosplay more than I get that, and even that, it's like, I would think that it would be more fun to be at a different thing, like a strictly cosplay thing, rather than having to share this space.
- 54:11Maria Pena: Mmm.
- 54:12Marisol: Right. You know what I mean? I get that.
- 54:15Tad Eggleston: Yeah.
- 54:15Maria Pena: Totally, yeah.
- 54:18Tad Eggleston: Also, I just.
- 54:19Maria Pena: Huh, okay.
- 54:20Tad Eggleston: I like manageable crowds.
- 54:22Tad Eggleston: And the more different things you have going on, the more the crowd just becomes…
- 54:27Marisol: Overwhelming.
- 54:28Tad Eggleston: For my autistic brain.
- 54:33Tad Eggleston: So, thank you guys so much.
- 54:36Tad Eggleston: And.
- 54:37Maria Pena: Oh, see you in two weeks.
- 54:39Tad Eggleston: For Maria Marisol and myself, this has been the Love & Rockets Book Club on 22 panels. And the 15th, in-between year… hey, it was even a nice… or no, I'm sorry, it's the 16th. I copied and pasted too much. Still a relatively round number.
- 54:58Tad Eggleston: 16th, in between years.
- 55:01Tad Eggleston: of… The Lovin' Rockets.
- 55:06Tad Eggleston: And…
- 55:07Maria Pena: universe.
- 55:08Tad Eggleston: Universe, and, and, and.
- 55:10Marisol: Next episode, we actually finally start Love & Rockets Volume 2, and I am looking forward to it. So until then… Really?
- 55:18Tad Eggleston: We will see… I'm very excited.
- 55:20Marisol: that.
- 55:21Tad Eggleston: After the next page.
