- 2:25Speaker 2: Good evening, everybody and welcome back to a very, very special Mrs Pie.
- 2:29Speaker 2: I am so excited because we're continuing the wildflower series and remember y'all, this is where we're talking to women whose face Adversities.
- 2:38Speaker 2: They came out stronger, with grace, a heart full of gratitude.
- 2:41Speaker 2: And tonight I'm so excited I'm having Nikia Washington join me.
- 2:45Speaker 1: How you doing, nikia.
- 2:46Speaker 1: I'm doing lovely.
- 2:47Speaker 1: I'm so happy to be here I.
- 2:50Speaker 2: Honored that you're here.
- 2:51Speaker 2: I do have to give a quick shout out to folks because we are on stream yard, as most people know, but For those y'all who don't know, we also are on parade deck live TV and also Apple TV.
- 3:02Speaker 2: So I wanted to say hi, everybody who's on Facebook, linkedin, youtube, twitter and also a break that live TV.
- 3:10Speaker 2: There's a community of six point two million or so folks over there on those streets, and also whoever's gonna catch us on the Audio podcast at the end of the week.
- 3:19Speaker 2: So I'm honored that you guys would, you know, keep watching us.
- 3:23Speaker 2: But I am really thrilled because, nikia, I think you're you know when I was trying to pull together the wildflower series and you know, I just want to throw out a big shout out to Nate Todd, who is my road manager, and so we're talking about.
- 3:39Speaker 2: I knew that the Lord wanted me to talk, to talk, talk to a specific group of women For at a specific time frame, and so this is, you know, talking to eight women who've gone through some things and are on the other side, and the idea is to just hear more about your journey and really help women.
- 3:56Speaker 2: The parade deck community that I mentioned they're mostly the veterans and military spouses.
- 4:02Speaker 2: So it's global and so I think everybody's gonna be able to, you know, really benefit from your experience.
- 4:08Speaker 2: But before we talk about unplanned perfection on your website, y'all and I've dropped it in the chat on your website you talk about a bathroom experience.
- 4:16Speaker 2: Not gonna know what that is, so can you tell us a little bit about what that was for you?
- 4:23Speaker 1: Yes, I, you know, I say it was like this movie moment in my life.
- 4:28Speaker 1: I look back on it and it still feels so surreal.
- 4:32Speaker 1: In a sense, I think it was the height of my brokenness.
- 4:36Speaker 1: I had that moment right after I had my daughter.
- 4:41Speaker 1: So I was still in the hospital with the newborn and they wouldn't let me leave because I had high blood pressure, I was going through a divorce.
- 4:51Speaker 1: It was just a really, really low point in my life and I carried just such a heavy weight that entire pregnancy and I just kept thinking, okay, as soon as I have her, like it's gonna be okay, like the weight is gonna be, I just need to make it to delivery and then I have her and it's gonna be okay.
- 5:10Speaker 1: And I think in that moment I realized wait a minute, you know, I feel heavier, I feel more stressed, more in despair, and I realized that wasn't gonna be the end, all be all that.
- 5:25Speaker 1: This was something that I was gonna have to maneuver and live with and be gracious through.
- 5:31Speaker 1: And I just think, once I made it to the shower, so I'm in the hospital room and I just need to shower, and so I get in the shower and I think you know, your mind is running in the shower.
- 5:45Speaker 1: I realized, you know what my life was going to look like, and it was me being a single mom of two.
- 5:54Speaker 1: And at that point I just I didn't have a job, I didn't have a car.
- 5:57Speaker 1: You know, I just didn't know how I was gonna be able to do it and I think it just all hit me at once.
- 6:04Speaker 1: I don't remember hearing myself crying, it just it was.
- 6:10Speaker 1: It was like slow motion and just this.
- 6:13Speaker 1: Well, just came out of me.
- 6:15Speaker 1: And next thing, I know I'm just like on the bathroom floor in the hospital with my daughter, you know, in the bassinet, and just kind of realizing what my life would be at that point.
- 6:29Speaker 2: Wow and that's so powerful.
- 6:30Speaker 2: And I think the other reason that stood out for me is the honesty behind that, because I think a lot of us have those bathroom moments.
- 6:38Speaker 2: We dare not speak about it, but I think you know, every time I talk to women especially, I tell folks don't swallow your testimony, because it's meant to bless somebody else.
- 6:47Speaker 2: So the fact that you were open and honest enough to share that, I think, is so incredibly important.
- 6:53Speaker 2: So for those of y'all who've gone through some things, y'all okay, that's what we got Nikia.
- 7:00Speaker 2: So tell us, so we've got.
- 7:01Speaker 2: Let me just do a quick show.
- 7:02Speaker 2: Hello, dumping Ground podcast.
- 7:04Speaker 2: Who's on here supporting Nikia?
- 7:06Speaker 2: Why are you bringing fan club?
- 7:08Speaker 2: I'm just kidding, hi Dumping Ground.
- 7:11Speaker 2: So can you tell us about what is unplanned perfection?
- 7:17Speaker 1: So, you know, I had some trauma in my childhood and I think it created this sense or this desire to want to control, and I did it in this way of making plans, you know.
- 7:31Speaker 1: So I had decided that, you know, I'm gonna make sure that I'm in control of my life, and so I'm gonna do this, I'm gonna do well in school and I'm gonna get married, and this is how my life is gonna go.
- 7:45Speaker 1: And I just wanted to make sure that I could kind of safe keep myself.
- 7:50Speaker 1: I felt like I, you know, needed to safe keep myself from any more pain, and you know.
- 7:56Speaker 1: And so I made so many plans and going through a divorce, it just that was never in the plans.
- 8:04Speaker 1: You know, I waited until I got married to have kids, because that was the plan and things are supposed to be perfect when you planned them out, and so I'm like no, like I follow the rules, like why is the outcome not looking the way that I had envisioned?
- 8:20Speaker 1: And so, as I was going through that whole process and learning to accept what my life was developing into, I wanted to create a platform that allowed for, you know, just honesty and transparency.
- 8:37Speaker 1: Because what I realized, you know, people were like DMing me or pulling me to the corner to talk about these things.
- 8:43Speaker 1: It was like a secret you know what I mean so, but I just felt like, no, like, let's say it Like, because if you allow yourself to actually speak your truth and to lean into it and, in a sense, like, embrace it, then you get to the other side, which is what God intends in the first place.
- 9:04Speaker 1: You know, and that's where you find you know your purpose, the perfection in it all.
- 9:09Speaker 1: But when we don't allow ourselves to do that, we kind of get stuck in that cycle, and so that's what I'm playing.
- 9:17Speaker 1: Perfection was I was talking to, like, my Thera coach I call her, and we were trying to figure out a name for it.
- 9:24Speaker 1: I'm like, and we're just talking and talking it through, and when that went hit it was just like, no, like, literally, that encompasses just the evolution of what my life has been.
- 9:38Speaker 2: So how, as you're talking to, are you talking to women in this other community that you're building out?
- 9:44Speaker 2: What would you say is maybe like roadblocks that women have, why don't we?
- 9:50Speaker 2: Why don't we do this?
- 9:53Speaker 1: I think, first of all, it's the plans, right, like so we're kind of bred into thinking that this picture, and that only picture, is the picture of success, it's the picture of accomplishment, it's the picture of what you should be as a woman.
- 10:14Speaker 1: And so many of us, for so many different reasons, fall outside of that picture and that create, because then it's like when you see other people falling into it it's a well, why not me, you know?
- 10:30Speaker 1: And when you don't say it right, you keep it in inside.
- 10:34Speaker 1: Then it creates room for shame and guilt and cognitive distortions and things that you're telling yourself that aren't true, and so then you're holding it in because I'm not telling my story, because I'm ashamed of it.
- 10:51Speaker 1: You know, right, this is happening to me because I'm not good enough or I'm not worthy, and so I think that's the biggest block, and I mean for me as well.
- 11:02Speaker 1: You know, I feel like I've been so transparent.
- 11:04Speaker 1: You know, my natural inclination is not this Like I'm super private, but we were, like I am really private, and but I have even found just so much freedom and just being and saying what it is.
- 11:20Speaker 1: You know what it was.
- 11:22Speaker 1: And so this journey, what I thought was for so many other people has honestly been an evolution for myself as well.
- 11:33Speaker 2: So how can women come to unplanned perfection and what kind of you know what kind of women kind of gravitate towards, towards you?
- 11:42Speaker 1: I would say, just women who are at that crossroads, and we is not just one.
- 11:49Speaker 1: I mean, I think we have it in so many different areas over and over again in life.
- 11:54Speaker 1: Right, and something happens that wasn't what you planned, what you wanted, what you desire, and you have to make a choice what you do with that, and I think our first inclination is to want to fight it, not accept it, to lean out instead of leaning into it, run away, you know, kind of going high, all things that I've just been guilty of doing.
- 12:21Speaker 1: And I think that first step is just radically accepting whatever that is like, making yourself stop trying to fight whatever has landed on your lap, you know, and the fight of the wise, and the fight of why me and not them, and the fight of but God, I thought you said, and the fight of faith, and all of those things prevent us from actually taking that whole evolution, you know, through that process.
- 12:53Speaker 1: So I always say, you know, the first step is always accepting, kind of putting your weapons down, your guards down and just being like let me just accept what is, you know.
- 13:09Speaker 2: I love that this.
- 13:10Speaker 2: I have this image in my head.
- 13:11Speaker 2: I carried around this image a lot for me, especially especially spiritual women and women of God.
- 13:18Speaker 2: We talk about being armored up and I actually have an image here in my office.
- 13:23Speaker 2: It's.
- 13:25Speaker 2: It's a.
- 13:26Speaker 2: It's an image depicting me, but fully armed, but kneeled and in a resting position.
- 13:31Speaker 2: Because I think there's we're so caught up with the fight and trying to survive, especially as women.
- 13:38Speaker 2: But there is a point where you kind of have to put your armor down.
- 13:42Speaker 2: I love the fact that you, you know you've been putting the weapons down just for a minute and just accepting the situations that you're in and then you can.
- 13:50Speaker 2: Then you can come up with whatever the plan is after that, right.
- 13:53Speaker 1: Yes, yes, and so many times that I think during that time period I was so, I wasn't hearing God a lot.
- 14:01Speaker 1: Everything was just so cloudy, but I was so clear, like that he wanted me to be still, and it was just so uncomfortable for me because I'm like Hello, how's the job, sir, sir, okay, and one year old, I need to figure out you know where I'm going to work, what's going to happen for me, for us.
- 14:25Speaker 1: You know, I don't have the luxury to be still.
- 14:28Speaker 1: I need to be fighting, I need to be knocking on doors, I need to be raising my you know, and I have never felt an intimacy that I did with God as I did in that season, because I was totally and utterly dependent on him, you know.
- 14:48Speaker 1: But I would have never gotten there if I hadn't just decided to just accept what it was Like and not trying to make sense of it, but just accept.
- 15:02Speaker 1: And then I feel like, after acceptance, then you work into the trust and the faith part.
- 15:07Speaker 1: But you can't even have faith like true faith during a rough season if you can't even accept what it is.
- 15:17Speaker 2: Wow, wow, that is so.
- 15:19Speaker 2: That's so powerful and, again, I love the way that you frame it.
- 15:23Speaker 2: It's that pause period and it's painful, like we're saying this y'all.
- 15:28Speaker 2: This is a process and a journey.
- 15:32Speaker 2: I'm trying to, like, put all the good words out there.
- 15:35Speaker 2: It's a process and a journey, but it does start with just accepting where you are and not doing the blame game, not throwing the darts, literally.
- 15:45Speaker 1: Then you know, and it's just like, cause you can and you probably would be justified, you know, and you could name like 10 people and it's your fault and it could, you would be right, you know.
- 15:58Speaker 1: And I just think it's not a matter of right or wrong or it really is just what it is and it nothing ever moves past that point.
- 16:11Speaker 1: If we just never get to the point where we're like all the ugly of it, all the pain, all the confusion, like literally just allowing yourself to just accept that and what that means for you, you know.
- 16:26Speaker 2: Yeah, how would you characterize where you are today?
- 16:29Speaker 1: Ooh, Just a place of contentment.
- 16:35Speaker 1: You know, I, literally, and you know what's so crazy.
- 16:39Speaker 1: You know I talk to people all the time and I'm like, let's be clear, yes, I wrote a book, but I'm still life in Like, like we're not.
- 16:49Speaker 1: The book doesn't end, you know, with this fairytale.
- 16:53Speaker 1: And then, you know, I still have to have a conscious faith with God.
- 16:59Speaker 1: I have to I still, you know, fight against, like my triggers.
- 17:05Speaker 1: You know, I still talk back to myself when, you know, things come up.
- 17:10Speaker 1: But I am just a totally, totally different place of contentment because I know who got it and I know who I am and I think that positioning is a positioning that I just haven't had in life up until this season.
- 17:31Speaker 2: That is a, that's also a measure of spiritual maturity, because there's a lot of I have.
- 17:35Speaker 2: I have a whole rant that tells people all the time that age, you know, it's not an age thing, there's a, there's a different level of the spiritual maturity.
- 17:45Speaker 2: So there's a lot of people that are still, you know, fighting the same fight from 30, 40 years ago and haven't figured out like, yeah, heaven doesn't respond in that way to that thing.
- 17:55Speaker 2: And for you it sounds like you, you you've kind of landed into that and you have that, that spiritual maturity.
- 18:01Speaker 2: So your approach, is different.
- 18:04Speaker 1: Yes, and it's.
- 18:05Speaker 1: It's really is a choice, you know, and I cringe when I think about the infancy of my relationship with God, because it was so toddler tantrums, and I would lean in, lean in, lean in, and then something would go wrong and I would be like, oh you, for me, like this, ain't the way this is supposed to work, and just go into a full tantrum, like God, you like, you don't care about me, you know and lean out and go do my own thing, and then decide that that only thing isn't working, come back, lean in, lean in until something happens that I don't like, and then I'm storming off in a tantrum again, and it had.
- 18:50Speaker 1: It crippled my relationship with God for years and years and years, because I had never gotten to a point of just true intimacy with God, because I just wasn't sticking around long enough.
- 19:01Speaker 1: You know, and some inconvenience happened that I felt like shouldn't happen to me or that I felt like God shouldn't have allowed.
- 19:10Speaker 1: Then I'm huffing and puffing and packing up my stuff, putting my Bible in the drawer, closing it and for however long, and then I got started back over, you know, and finally getting to that point where I'm like girl enough, you know, like either you trust God or you don't, and either you believe his word or you don't.
- 19:32Speaker 1: And I remember I was having this conversation with one of my girlfriends hey Robin, but she was like all of this just boils down to what do you believe about God?
- 19:45Speaker 1: That's right, because if you believe that, like he's a loving father, and if you believe that he's not like having this whip and just can't wait to punish you, you know, or if you believe that you know everything that he's doing is for your good, that he wouldn't withhold a good thing, if you truly, truly believe that about God, then it's going to shape your response to the inconveniences of life, because even though stuff hurts when I know that, I know that I have a loving father who's in this some way, like I'm going to show up differently versus if my belief system about him is a little shaky, or if I am, you know what I used to do.
- 20:32Speaker 1: I feel like I used to put God in my dad in the same character, and so I'm bringing daddy wounds to that relationship.
- 20:40Speaker 1: So I'm like I knew you wasn't for me, I knew you was going to leave, because that's what y'all do, and but God is not my earthly father.
- 20:48Speaker 1: You know what I mean.
- 20:49Speaker 1: That's right.
- 20:49Speaker 1: Changing your belief system also impacts the maturity of your relationship with him, because what do you truly in your heart of hearts believe?
- 21:00Speaker 1: Like not what you say, but what do I believe about God, your father?
- 21:06Speaker 1: Because intentions matter, you know, and so you know that your God is for you Holy.
- 21:14Speaker 1: Difference thing it's like your positioning is different.
- 21:17Speaker 2: I love that.
- 21:18Speaker 2: Can you give some advice to women?
- 21:20Speaker 2: Now we're going to talk about what we say about ourselves.
- 21:23Speaker 2: You know, can you give some advice around how we talk about ourselves and even as we're in the situation because I get you made the point that you know it could be easy to start throwing out the darts, and you know, it could be justified, but you know what would you say around that.
- 21:44Speaker 1: So I think just going back to, I think sometimes we just make is so much more complicated than what it is.
- 21:51Speaker 1: And for me, I recognize, or I did some work and had to realize like, hey, what, what are your wounds?
- 21:59Speaker 1: You know, like what's what's still eating at you from childhood, like, and I realized like, okay, I have like this worth wound thing and I need to go back and reestablish what I believe about my worthiness and finding scripture that literally speak to who you are, who God says you are, how he looks at you, how he adores you.
- 22:30Speaker 1: Doing something simple as like getting a book to do devotions that is literally just targeted to whatever your thing is Like, if it's rejection, if you just, if you like, oh, like I'm just really having a hard time with believing that good things will happen for me, or if I'm just having like whatever it is like do some work, like ask yourself the hard questions, ask the people around you who you trust, and then that thing just targeting in on it.
- 23:00Speaker 1: You know you wake up in the morning saying the scripture that feels in cause.
- 23:05Speaker 1: You got to fill in those voids with this word, you know, and so and I think that that when you do the work, then when you get those thoughts, they're not just automatic thoughts anymore.
- 23:16Speaker 1: Right, so what I really really recognize, okay, it's a worth thing for you.
- 23:21Speaker 1: I started changing when I was telling myself to, or allowing my automatic thoughts to be replaced, because then when something happens, I'm like my automatic thought is like see, you know, like you you should have known, or those like those good things don't happen to you.
- 23:40Speaker 1: And then I stopped, started stopping those thoughts, you know, replacing with what I know the truth is and calling them out for the lies that they are.
- 23:50Speaker 1: And so you start kind of breaking that cycle.
- 23:53Speaker 1: But you can't break it up if you don't have anything to put it, so just start clipping yourself, like with the word something to say back to it.
- 24:00Speaker 1: I think that's like that first step in your stopping automatic thoughts.
- 24:06Speaker 1: And so once you start doing it so much, then you'll start realizing your automatic thoughts now are not those distortions, they're actually what God says, you know.
- 24:19Speaker 2: Yeah, I love that, I love all of this.
- 24:21Speaker 2: It's something I share with folks that I mentor and coach is.
- 24:25Speaker 2: I tell people all the time I only believe what's true about me, and so it doesn't matter what anyone says, the world says, I don't care who it is right, I only believe what's true about me and I know what's true about me based on what God says about me.
- 24:38Speaker 2: So because I feed that into my mind, my thoughts right, because your thoughts then become your words and those words become your actions and we just kind of live it out or, as the folks say, they manifest it out, whatever right, you actually start creating and being that thing that you actually thought.
- 24:58Speaker 2: So if you don't think you're valued or highly favored in his kingdom, then you're gonna act out your life in that way, as someone that has no value in the kingdom, and that's just not true.
- 25:12Speaker 2: So I mean, and I love it again, I love all this and, like I said, I know we've got folks on the Thoraydeck TV screen watching us.
- 25:20Speaker 2: Now I wondered if you could share some advice for especially a lot of the military spouses or across the war they're separated.
- 25:30Speaker 2: Thanksgiving is a kind of a rough time.
- 25:32Speaker 2: Would be away from family.
- 25:34Speaker 2: I wondered if you could share just some words of encouragement for those women as well.
- 25:40Speaker 1: Yeah, you know, I think the biggest, biggest, biggest thing that I have learned I am such a runner from uncomfortable seasons I'm like nope, nope, nope, I wanna run and go hide in the corner, heal like Wolverine, then come back out when I'm better.
- 25:58Speaker 1: And you know, I could just be so hard on myself, especially during rough times.
- 26:04Speaker 1: And you know, I think there is so much power in just grace and allowing yourself to feel what you feel.
- 26:13Speaker 1: And I think it's okay to say, like you know, today it sucks, I like that, it's heavy, I wanna be across the country with my mama and not allowing yourself to stay there.
- 26:27Speaker 1: But I think that the grace in making what you feel humane and not trying to like, I think sometimes we just wanna go straight to the like.
- 26:39Speaker 1: You know, girl power.
- 26:41Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 26:43Speaker 1: Like, all right, bounce back.
- 26:44Speaker 1: You know we strong, resilient and we are, but I think it's okay to be like.
- 26:48Speaker 1: But like today, I'm just gonna cry in the bed all day.
- 26:51Speaker 1: And so I think, giving being gracious with yourself during like a tough season, during a holiday season I always say, like holidays are rough for me as well, because, you know, sometimes like holidays, I split custody with my kids and so sometimes they're with their dad, sometimes they're with me, and I used to wanna feel that in so much and pretend like that wasn't, until I just said no, like actually I'm just sad, and tomorrow I'm gonna get up and clean up and do stuff, but it's okay today to be that.
- 27:24Speaker 1: And then I think, after you and I guess it just goes back to the acceptance of what is and then I feel like then, after that, just being very conscious about just caring for your soul and in hard times, you know it doesn't always have to be you out and being just super productive and just being a superwoman, just making sure that you're doing what you can and be it leaning into your spiritual life with God.
- 27:55Speaker 1: Be it be in my heart, like today I'm about to go and get a massage or, and I just felt like all of that really, really, really just does wonders for navigating cause.
- 28:07Speaker 1: We can't change what is, but what we can make sure is that we're taking care of ourselves and that we're showing up just authentically as we can throughout it.
- 28:19Speaker 2: I love that so much and I'm drinking it in for myself.
- 28:22Speaker 2: I don't know if y'all, if y'all, don't need it.
- 28:23Speaker 2: I'm taking it in for myself.
- 28:25Speaker 2: That is so amazing.
