Spider-Man’s Box Office Shockwave: Why Audiences Still Show Up · Between Screenings

• 0:09
SPEAKER_01: Welcome back to Between Screenings.
• 0:11
SPEAKER_01: Myself and Tom Percival will be chatting all things film.
• 0:16
SPEAKER_01: It is the summer season, so it's a bit of a dearth of indie fair at the moment.
• 0:20
SPEAKER_01: There doesn't seem to be a whole heap of counter programming going on in my multiplex.
• 0:26
SPEAKER_01: So we are going to be chatting about Spider-Man and seeing if either of our amazing box office predictions from last time come true.
• 0:33
SPEAKER_01: Because it's it it's had a few weeks in the cinema, and we thought, well, will it do okay?
• 0:39
SPEAKER_01: This will be the test.
• 0:40
SPEAKER_01: Do people still care about these sorts of things?
• 0:42
SPEAKER_01: Um I think the I think the general public have answered that one, have they, Tom?
• 0:46
SPEAKER_02: I think they might have.
• 0:48
  SPEAKER_02: What were we saying?
• 0:49
SPEAKER_02: Like, you know, I think if it does anything less than 800, you know, like in its entire run, Marvel will deem this a failure.
• 0:58
SPEAKER_02: And it did 800 in its opening weekend.
• 1:01
SPEAKER_02: Um I think our powers of prognostication, Neil, perhaps aren't the most aren't the most accurate, consider all things considered.
• 1:10
SPEAKER_01: I think we underestimated this this this film, as a lot of as a lot of people did, I think.
• 1:19
SPEAKER_01: Um biggest domestic box office opening of all time, not adjusted for inflation.
• 1:24
SPEAKER_01: Um, but cinema tickets I don't think have gone up a whopping great amount since Endgame.
• 1:29
SPEAKER_01: Um so greatest, biggest domestic box office opening of all time, possibly gonna race to the biggest domestic taking of all time.
• 1:37
SPEAKER_01: Maybe, maybe if it carries on, it'll be the first film to hit a billion domestically, and the first film ever to hit three billion um globally, which it is insane.
• 1:50
SPEAKER_01: It's Spider-Man, so you know, people do love Spider-Man, but none of the previous Spider-Man films I've got anywhere near this big, um, even with the madness of the the the fanboy service of the last one with the Andrew Garfield and uh all the other crossover stuff, Toby Maguire and whatnot, which I swerved, that's the only Spider-Man film I've not seen in the cinema.
• 2:15
SPEAKER_01: Well, because I just couldn't be dealing with all the Martyverse nonsense.
• 2:18
SPEAKER_01: I just it did my head in.
• 2:20
SPEAKER_01: Um so it's kind of back to one baddie Spider-Man trying to save Mary Jane and figure out trying to sort of deal with the fact she can't remember him and all that kind of stuff.
• 2:33
SPEAKER_01: Um but yeah, that on its own apparently is enough.
• 2:37
SPEAKER_01: Spider-Man on his own is enough to save superheroes.
• 2:42
SPEAKER_02: Well, I I do think, and again, I realise we said this after Supergirl, that Spider-Man would be the real test.
• 2:47
SPEAKER_02: So I do realize I'm slightly contradicting myself there.
• 2:50
SPEAKER_02: But I do think that we do need to acknowledge that Spider-Man is the most popular superhero in the world by a comfortable distance.
• 2:57
SPEAKER_02: I think the stat, and this is probably a little out of date that I have to hand, is that uh the biggest true superhero superheroes in the world are Spider-Man, Batman, and Superman.
• 3:08
SPEAKER_02: And you could add Batman and Superman's like, you know, merchandise budget, the amount they make in merch each year together, and you still are only two-thirds of what Spider-Man alone makes.
• 3:19
SPEAKER_02: That's how massive this character is.
• 3:21
SPEAKER_02: I am still shocked how well this is done.
• 3:24
SPEAKER_02: Um, so I was lucky enough to see this film a few days before it came out.
• 3:30
SPEAKER_02: Friends and I, as we left, said, that was really good.
• 3:33
SPEAKER_02: But has Marvel and have Marvel Marvel and Sony salted the ground a little bit?
• 3:38
SPEAKER_02: Because it, I think I'm I'll ask you your thoughts on it in a minute, Neil.
• 3:42
SPEAKER_02: But like I thought it was just a super solid superhero movie.
• 3:45
SPEAKER_02: Like, you know, really good, like really like, in fact, probably better than good, you know, but nothing in there was like on the level of like an Avengers movie, you know, where or like um, as you mentioned, uh No Way Home, which obviously had the cameo from the cameos of the other two Spider-Man, that sort of would make this a big word of mouth hit amongst like, you know, people who aren't necessarily going to see everything at the cinema.
• 4:10
SPEAKER_02: So I was like, this will do well, but I think it's probably gonna do less than uh No Way Home simply because what's that drive to the to get people into theaters?
• 4:21
SPEAKER_02: I mean, again, it shows exactly what we know.
• 4:23
SPEAKER_02: And I do think I think it's been boosted by the fact that Tom Holland and Zendaya are having a huge moment in pop culture right now.
• 4:32
SPEAKER_02: They are all over Instagram because of the Odyssey and Spider-Man coming out so close together.
• 4:37
SPEAKER_02: The Odyssey also, of course, breaking a bill.
• 4:39
SPEAKER_02: First, uh the second Christopher Nolan film to break a bill.
• 4:42
SPEAKER_02: I do think that gives you people it makes people, you know, ooh, they've got another film out.
• 4:47
  SPEAKER_02: I'll go see that.
• 4:48
SPEAKER_02: It's just it's just fascinating, to be honest, how well it's done.
• 4:53
SPEAKER_02: I like to be, you know, within touching distance potentially of Endgame's box office record is madness.
• 4:59
SPEAKER_01: Like, um, and I do think To overtake Endgame as the biggest opening weekend domestically was insane because you don't you're not relying on word of mouth then.
• 5:11
SPEAKER_01: You're relying on people being excited about what's gonna be delivered.
• 5:16
  SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
• 5:17
SPEAKER_01: And uh excited about the marketing and excited about the the the film.
• 5:21
SPEAKER_01: So, you know, Marvel haven't managed to do that with any of the other films.
• 5:27
SPEAKER_01: Like Fantastic Four had an amazing cast, looked like it was gonna be cool, didn't do that great.
• 5:33
SPEAKER_01: Um, Thunderbolts, no one cared.
• 5:36
SPEAKER_01: New Captain America, no one cared.
• 5:38
SPEAKER_01: Like you say, Spider-Man, people care and people turn up for.
• 5:41
SPEAKER_01: Um, but this was I mean, people really turned up.
• 5:45
SPEAKER_01: It was, you know, mad.
• 5:48
SPEAKER_01: I know I've I've seen it and I thought it was okay.
• 5:49
SPEAKER_01: I thought it was decent.
• 5:50
SPEAKER_01: It was a it was a fun superhero movie.
• 5:52
SPEAKER_01: I don't think it did anything particularly special.
• 5:54
SPEAKER_01: Um, I don't I think I think the kind of the the him not remembering Zendaya, the him not remembering his his friends was kind of interesting, but they kind of dealt with that quite.
• 6:09
SPEAKER_01: I I I feel like that could have maybe gone on a bit more.
• 6:11
SPEAKER_01: They could have done so I feel like they could have done something more interesting with that, but they kind of were like, no, we just we just need to get them back together as quickly as we can.
• 6:19
SPEAKER_01: Um I was slightly worried because there was some there was some Marvel sort of quality CGI early in the film, and I was like, please let's not have too much of this.
• 6:28
SPEAKER_01: And I don't think it did uh went overly heavy uh with that stuff.
• 6:32
SPEAKER_01: Um interesting that it's a sort of Spider-Man movie, and I think it's interesting, isn't it, that Batman's the next biggest superhero to Spider-Man, but they're very, very different in terms of Batman is this angst-ridden, sort of dark, anti-hero-esque superhero.
• 6:51
  SPEAKER_01: He's a brooding sort of thing.
• 6:52
SPEAKER_01: Whereas Spider-Man is your sort of likable, um, quirky, happy chappy, yeah.
• 7:02
SPEAKER_01: Superhero, cocky, like um flippant.
• 7:06
SPEAKER_01: And the first half of this film, he's a bit more Batman.
• 7:09
SPEAKER_01: He's very brooding in his tech world and getting all upset and going out and just being the vigilante constant, constant, constant.
• 7:18
SPEAKER_01: Um, so you sort of miss a bit of the fun Spider-Man early in the film, which you know is kind of interesting.
• 7:23
SPEAKER_01: Um but yeah, I don't think it did anything for me that would rise it that this far above the previous Spider-Man film I've seen.
• 7:33
SPEAKER_02: Well, no, I completely agree.
• 7:34
SPEAKER_02: Like again, I'm I've really enjoyed this movie, and I'm I don't want to talk it down, but I do think that it's like it's it I really I've enjoyed the Tom Holland.
• 7:43
  SPEAKER_02: I don't think there is Tom Holland's made a bad Spider-Man movie.
• 7:45
SPEAKER_02: Like you can argue about No Way Home and whether it's a bit too reliant on fan service, but I still think it works.
• 7:51
SPEAKER_02: I think like this is on a level to me for me with Homecoming, um, you know, the first Spider-Man movie he made, which I thought was really good.
• 7:58
SPEAKER_02: Like, and I think people are like underestimating quite how like that has one of the best moments in superhero movies when the vultures sat at um, you know, the he's driving Peter and his date to the homecoming, and all of a sudden he clocks Peter Parker is Spider-Man, and that's just that line, good old Spider-Man.
• 8:18
SPEAKER_02: Like, it's genuinely quite creepy.
• 8:20
SPEAKER_02: And I think this film's on a level with that, so I don't quite understand why everyone's lost their minds about this.
• 8:28
SPEAKER_02: I do think Marvel was really clever.
• 8:31
SPEAKER_02: Uh Marvel and Sony were really clever in the way they marketed this.
• 8:35
SPEAKER_02: And like they they put out these trailers that sort of hinted, like they never confirmed who the villain was.
• 8:42
SPEAKER_02: You know, they they had Sadie Sink and they never said she is playing Gene Grey.
• 8:46
SPEAKER_02: It, you know, it was in certain people at certain corners of the internet knew, but for the most part, you had no idea who the villain was, which I do think was a draw.
• 8:55
SPEAKER_02: They implied that we get to see a lot, you know, they had Scorpion in the trailer, boomerang, tarantula.
• 9:01
SPEAKER_02: Like they had they implied it was going to be bigger than perhaps it ended up being.
• 9:04
SPEAKER_02: I do think the the the tease of Peter turning into something, you know, in the trailers, we kept on seeing him with the black eyes and the you know, you're changing.
• 9:14
SPEAKER_02: I do think there were they were sort of people may have gone to the theatre expecting something that was never gonna happen in a Disney film, let's be completely honest.
• 9:23
SPEAKER_02: We were never going to get the fly meets Spider-Man as much as fans might have wanted it.
• 9:28
SPEAKER_02: But ultimately, I do think the reason why this film worked is it's just genuine, it's just really well made.
• 9:33
SPEAKER_02: Like um, I went to see it at the press screening, and then, as I say, a few days later, they had I went to a general audience screening, and people were just having a great time.
• 9:41
SPEAKER_02: Like, you know, like it's nice to see people engaging with the, you know, with with the film.
• 9:45
SPEAKER_02: They were clapping, they were cheering, they were behaving very American, if you don't mind me saying, uh, to be completely honest.
• 9:52
SPEAKER_01: Um not allowed in a cinema, sorry.
• 9:54
SPEAKER_02: You know, there was a woman beside me who kept pointing at the screen every like two minutes, and I was like, I'd more power to you because you're not talking.
• 10:02
SPEAKER_02: So but um so clearly it just clicked with people in a way I don't necessarily understand.
• 10:08
  SPEAKER_01: Yeah, no, I mean, like I say, I I enjoyed it.
• 10:10
  SPEAKER_01: I think it was it didn't feel like it's two-hour, 40-minute runtime.
• 10:14
SPEAKER_01: It um it sort of moved her at a decent pace.
• 10:17
SPEAKER_01: Um it was a nice film.
• 10:19
SPEAKER_01: I mean, Florence Pugh was phoning it in in that bathtub.
• 10:23
SPEAKER_02: She was thought, no, I like Florence Pugh in the city.
• 10:26
SPEAKER_01: She was phoning that in.
• 10:28
SPEAKER_01: No, big potato, small potato.
• 10:31
  SPEAKER_01: It was good.
• 10:31
SPEAKER_01: She was phoning that in.
• 10:33
  SPEAKER_01: Oh my days.
• 10:33
SPEAKER_01: I mean, I've not seen any of the other stuff she's in where she's doing this absolutely god-awful Russian accent.
• 10:38
  SPEAKER_02: But that's that's that's basically the character.
• 10:41
  SPEAKER_01: That's the character.
• 10:42
  SPEAKER_01: Absolute.
• 10:43
SPEAKER_01: I mean, she she had to put in zero effort and gave zero shits about doing that.
• 10:48
SPEAKER_01: I can tell it just it just yeah, I'm here because I have to be that like yeah, it would be I've I found it amusing, but um but yes.
• 10:58
SPEAKER_01: I that but for me, that stuff I don't care about because I'm not I'm not bought into the wider world of Marvel.
• 11:06
SPEAKER_01: So it works as a standalone film.
• 11:08
SPEAKER_01: I think the fact it's had such staying power after um such a big opening weekend, is it is obviously showing people are re-watching it, people are telling other people to go and see it.
• 11:17
SPEAKER_01: There is pretty much nothing else out now for a while, so it's kind of got the multiplexes to themselves.
• 11:23
SPEAKER_01: And you've got to remember it's done this, it's done this big a box office without premium format.
• 11:29
SPEAKER_01: Yeah, Nox had the IMAXs because Nolan's got all the IMAXs still.
• 11:35
SPEAKER_02: I wonder if there Kevin Feig is currently sat in meetings discussing the fact that they have no IMAX screens for Dune 3 either, when Doomsday comes out, and whether they're thinking, right, how can we replicate this?
• 11:48
  SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I mean it's yeah, it's it it's mad.
• 11:51
SPEAKER_01: I'm assuming maybe it'll get another kick at the box office when it when it does hit IMAX and some people who've seen it go back to to experience it in IMAX.
• 12:00
SPEAKER_01: I mean, you gotta you gotta imagine it could happen.
• 12:03
SPEAKER_01: So yeah, no, I it it it's okay as a film.
• 12:07
  SPEAKER_01: I mean it's No, it's better than okay.
• 12:09
  SPEAKER_01: It's it's still like No, I don't know if it is.
• 12:12
SPEAKER_01: It's uh for what it is, it's good enough, I suppose.
• 12:16
  SPEAKER_02: No, it's it's a Spider-Man movie.
• 12:18
  SPEAKER_02: Like, you know, it's I think it's I think it's up there.
• 12:22
  SPEAKER_02: I think it's possibly a top three Spider-Man movie.
• 12:24
SPEAKER_02: I think uh not outside the animated ones, because obviously the Spider-Verse movies are a d just their own beast entirely.
• 12:30
SPEAKER_02: But I think like, you know, it you could mention it in the same breath as Spider-Man 2, Homecoming, and this.
• 12:36
SPEAKER_02: And I wouldn't be like, wow, that person has terrible opinions.
• 12:40
SPEAKER_01: But again, I think that's out i i it's the testament to the to the character of Spider-Man that you can have the live-action Spider-Man movies, and then you can have the Spider-Verse movies as well, and they all do amazingly well.
• 12:52
  SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
• 12:53
SPEAKER_01: Um But the same with Batman, you've got Robert Pattinson's Batman, and then you've got The Joker, the first one, which was decent.
• 13:00
SPEAKER_01: Um and then you've got what will be the MC the DCU Batman films, which I'm sure will also do well.
• 13:08
SPEAKER_00: If we ever get there.
• 13:10
SPEAKER_01: If we ever get there.
• 13:12
SPEAKER_02: Um because as we say, that Supergirl box office, I think, may be drawing question marks over um James Gunn's tenure as the head of DC of DC.
• 13:23
SPEAKER_02: It'll be interesting to see how Clayface does.
• 13:25
SPEAKER_01: It would be interesting to see how Clayface does.
• 13:27
  SPEAKER_02: But Clayface is.
• 13:31
  SPEAKER_02: I think on a 70 million budget.
• 13:32
SPEAKER_02: So it doesn't need and it's got directed by Mike.
• 13:36
SPEAKER_02: Is the Mike Flanagan writer or director?
• 13:38
SPEAKER_02: I can't remember now off the top of my head.
• 13:39
SPEAKER_01: It's James James Watkins is directing.
• 13:41
  SPEAKER_02: Right, okay.
• 13:42
SPEAKER_02: Uh, you know, I'm like screenplay Mike Flanagan.
• 13:46
  SPEAKER_02: That's it.
• 13:47
SPEAKER_02: I'm very optimistic for Clayface, based uh mainly on the fact that it didn't cost a lot to make.
• 13:52
SPEAKER_02: Um even if it doesn't do well, Neil, we need to support it because it was filmed partly in Manchester.
• 13:56
  SPEAKER_02: So, you know.
• 13:57
SPEAKER_01: Well I'll be going to see Clayface.
• 13:58
SPEAKER_01: I think it looks it looks exactly what I kind of want from DC.
• 14:01
SPEAKER_01: I want that I want the Penguin TV series.
• 14:05
SPEAKER_01: I want I want Matt Reeves Batman.
• 14:08
SPEAKER_01: I want something completely opposite to Marvel.
• 14:11
SPEAKER_01: I want the darker, grittier stuff.
• 14:14
SPEAKER_01: I don't want Schneider's version of darker and grittier, which is literally just darker colour.
• 14:19
SPEAKER_02: What if Superman was Jesus?
• 14:21
SPEAKER_02: That would be a really clever allegory, wouldn't it?
• 14:23
  SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
• 14:24
  SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I'm I Yeah, I mean I don't blame Henry Cavill.
• 14:28
SPEAKER_01: I liked I didn't mind the Henry Cavill um Superman.
• 14:31
SPEAKER_01: I didn't like the second half of Man of Steel because it was just a big smash 'em up for far too long.
• 14:35
  SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
• 14:36
SPEAKER_01: Um But generally, I like I I'd be interested to see why well, I'm interested to see this one because they're kind of a slightly different take on that whole genre.
• 14:46
SPEAKER_01: Whereas I think DC tries often too often to just sort of lean in and copy what Marvel have done rather than doing their own thing.
• 14:54
SPEAKER_01: And you're always gonna fail because you're not Marvel, your heroes are different.
• 14:58
  SPEAKER_02: No, I I completely agree.
• 15:00
SPEAKER_02: I mean, we'll talk in a bit about why I haven't been to the cinema so much in the last week or so.
• 15:04
SPEAKER_02: Um, because I have been watching a DC project.
• 15:08
SPEAKER_02: But yeah, I I agree, and I I'm very excited for Clayface because I do think it has that slightly it looks like it has an edge to it that I mean I enjoyed Spider-Man as I say, but it you know, it's very soft and cuddly.
• 15:19
SPEAKER_02: The Punisher is allowed to say shit, and that's about it, even though in the deck the m the Netflix series he's saying he's dropping an F bomb every other word, basically.
• 15:29
SPEAKER_01: That's again I could enjoy The Punisher being in it.
• 15:32
SPEAKER_01: I enjoyed the uh like those were some of the better bits for me.
• 15:35
  SPEAKER_01: I really enjoyed it.
• 15:36
SPEAKER_01: I knew nothing about The Punisher, I don't know anything about The Punisher, I've not seen any of the TV series, I've not read a comic book um with him in in it, or I don't think I've even read a proper comic book in my lifetime, sorry to say.
• 15:47
SPEAKER_01: Um but I could enjoy the bits he was in, I got his character, you know, it was it it was fun.
• 15:54
SPEAKER_01: Um I I had fun watching it, so I think that's all you can ask for in that sort of film.
• 15:59
  SPEAKER_01: No, I completely agree.
• 16:01
SPEAKER_01: And it didn't go over the top with the fights and with the whatever else.
• 16:04
SPEAKER_01: You're never gonna, you know, you know Spider-Man's gonna win at the end, and that's always the problem these films have.
• 16:11
SPEAKER_01: But it made it fun enough with ooh, who are the real bad I mean, it kind of signposted who the real baddie was pretty easily and pretty early on.
• 16:20
SPEAKER_02: I mean if you're paying attention, but I do feel I do have to put one big demerit in the uh in the house points of uh Spider-Man Brand New Day, in the completely wasted Trammel Tillman.
• 16:32
SPEAKER_02: Like he is so good.
• 16:34
SPEAKER_02: Um and he is playing one of the dullest characters in superhero fiction, I think.
• 16:40
SPEAKER_02: He's like he basically just wants Gene Gray's powers for himself, and he's that's and he's just a bad guy.
• 16:46
SPEAKER_02: And I was like, you know when he turns up in the Mission Impossible movies and he's so weird, like he just really, really brings like that off-beat energy that we see in um Severance.
• 16:57
  SPEAKER_02: Severance.
• 16:57
SPEAKER_02: Like you want that in everything he does.
• 17:00
SPEAKER_02: And I appreciate, you know, he can't do it for everything.
• 17:02
SPEAKER_02: He doesn't want to get typecast, but he is genuinely one of the dullest supervillains.
• 17:07
SPEAKER_02: I think if the rest of it wasn't that you know, the rest of uh Brand New Day wasn't so good, we'd be saying that this is up there with Malekith and the uh from Dark for the Dark World and the other phase two villains who we all hate.
• 17:21
SPEAKER_01: I I yeah, I mean I it was pretty obvious from the start that they were the baddies.
• 17:26
  SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
• 17:27
  SPEAKER_01: Um the real baddies.
• 17:29
SPEAKER_01: And I think they kind of revealed that it was Gene Grey a little bit early for me, because as soon as I I I am not a big superhero fan, but as soon as I heard she was Gene Grey, I was like, oh right, she's definitely, definitely not a bad.
• 17:40
SPEAKER_02: I will say there was a very funny moment in my in the cinema when I went uh to the normal screen end, in that there is a very obvious pause when Peter works out that it's Jean Grey.
• 17:51
SPEAKER_02: And you know how like Marvel's accused of leaving beats after a big dramatic reveal for the audience to clap.
• 17:57
SPEAKER_02: When they do not clap, like they did not in my theatre, it is exceptionally awkward because all you hear is the silence.
• 18:04
SPEAKER_02: There is no noise, it is just an empty screening of people who could not give less of a shit because everyone knew it was Jean Grey at that point, anyway.
• 18:12
  SPEAKER_02: Um, so yeah.
• 18:14
SPEAKER_02: Um I will say there was one particular cherry on top of my um Spider-Man experience, which I do think has given it a little bit a little uh one of the reasons I enjoyed it as much as I did.
• 18:26
SPEAKER_02: Um I saw some people filming the end of the post-credit scene um at the press screening of all things.
• 18:38
SPEAKER_02: Uh yes, well, I have never and I was expecting these people to get away with that.
• 18:44
SPEAKER_02: However, security came down on them like an absolute ton of bricks.
• 18:50
SPEAKER_02: No one on the air was like, you can't leave your the your seat until you show me your phone and I watch you delete that footage.
• 18:57
SPEAKER_02: They were like, Have you sent that to anyone?
• 18:59
SPEAKER_02: And they were like, no, no, no, no, no, I'll send it to anyone.
• 19:01
SPEAKER_02: And I was like, Yes, this is this is can we have this in normal cinemas, please?
• 19:05
SPEAKER_02: I really respected the good work, security team at the uh at the at the press screening.
• 19:10
SPEAKER_02: You were doing the Lord's work.
• 19:12
SPEAKER_01: Yeah, and also other than uh paying my respect to everyone who worked on the film, staying for that post-credit scene was the biggest waste of my time ever.
• 19:18
SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I was irritated as well.
• 19:21
  SPEAKER_01: Don't bother.
• 19:22
SPEAKER_01: If you've not seen Spider-Man yet, do not bother waiting for the post-credit scene.
• 19:26
SPEAKER_01: It is probably one of the worst ones I've ever seen.
• 19:29
  SPEAKER_02: It's genuinely shocking.
• 19:30
SPEAKER_02: Um I'm interested now, based on the success of this, to see because again, I've seen loads of people saying Marvel's back, Marvel's back.
• 19:38
SPEAKER_02: Um I'd be very interested now, because we've got December, is it December 13th?
• 19:45
  SPEAKER_02: Um Doomsday.
• 19:47
  SPEAKER_02: Doomsday finally lands.
• 19:49
SPEAKER_02: And I will say that I have noted a lot more sort of enthusiasm building for this film.
• 19:55
SPEAKER_02: Because when the first trailer came out, there wasn't a lot of a lot of people being a bit doom and gloom, pun unintended, about um the the way the trailer looks.
• 20:04
SPEAKER_02: And I've noticed that people were like, actually, does this look pretty good now?
• 20:07
SPEAKER_02: And I don't know whether that's the afterglow of Spider-Man or whether Marvel's just got its shit together with that trailer.
• 20:14
SPEAKER_02: Um, but I'm certainly more interested in it than I was before.
• 20:19
SPEAKER_02: And I think if this I don't think Doomsday does as well as Spider-Man, I'll be honest, to make another prediction which will undoubtedly be proven wrong.
• 20:27
  SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I don't know.
• 20:28
  SPEAKER_01: I just don't know now.
• 20:29
SPEAKER_01: The everything everything would suggest that it's gonna be bigger than Spider-Man.
• 20:35
SPEAKER_02: Everything would suggest like in a normal world, yes.
• 20:39
SPEAKER_02: However, I do not know if the general public care enough.
• 20:45
SPEAKER_02: Like the people the circles I move in all know that there's an Avengers movie coming out.
• 20:49
SPEAKER_02: But if you went and said to, you know, said to, you know, like my sister, for example, oh there's a new Avengers movie coming out, would she know?
• 20:57
  SPEAKER_02: That's the question.
• 20:58
  SPEAKER_01: No, possibly not.
• 21:00
SPEAKER_01: And they won't care that the Russo brothers are back directing, because that's you need to really know what you So Spider-Man isn't in Doomsday.
• 21:07
  SPEAKER_01: No, apparently not.
• 21:08
  SPEAKER_01: That that's interesting.
• 21:09
SPEAKER_01: What I mean, I don't know enough about what's going on, but that seems odd.
• 21:13
  SPEAKER_01: So you know.
• 21:16
  SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah.
• 21:17
SPEAKER_00: Sorry, I thought it frozen.
• 21:18
  SPEAKER_00: So Spider-Man isn't in it.
• 21:21
  SPEAKER_02: Supposedly.
• 21:22
SPEAKER_02: However, I imagine we will be getting a cameo at some point during the film that they are just not reporting on right now.
• 21:31
SPEAKER_02: Um because I just don't see a world in which they don't pop Spider-Man, their most popular character in this film.
• 21:39
SPEAKER_01: Yeah, but wouldn't you now be thinking wow, mate I mean, I'd I'd be popping a trailer out with him in it between now and the release.
• 21:50
SPEAKER_02: I joked about this the the day after the when the when we saw the film's huge box office that Kevin Feig must have gone to work that day and said, Put up a trailer and put Spider Man in that and do a Tom Holland's not in it and just just put him in it anyway.
• 22:02
  SPEAKER_02: Don't care.
• 22:03
  SPEAKER_02: Use old footage.
• 22:04
SPEAKER_02: Just stick Spider-Man in it somewhere.
• 22:06
  SPEAKER_02: Right.
• 22:06
  SPEAKER_01: We've got we've got three months.
• 22:09
  SPEAKER_01: Reshoots, reshoots.
• 22:10
SPEAKER_01: We just need five minutes.
• 22:11
  SPEAKER_01: We need five minutes.
• 22:12
  SPEAKER_01: Get him in.
• 22:13
SPEAKER_02: Well, this is the interesting thing, because Tom Holland was film was seen filming something as Spider-Man round London relatively recently.
• 22:22
SPEAKER_02: And people were like, is it for Secret Wars?
• 22:24
  SPEAKER_02: Is it for Doomsday?
• 22:26
SPEAKER_02: So maybe he isn't it.
• 22:27
SPEAKER_02: And maybe they're just not maybe they're hoping for word of mouth, you know, that people go see it and say, Oh, did you know that Tom Holland does a cameo in this?
• 22:33
  SPEAKER_01: Well, we shall see.
• 22:34
SPEAKER_01: Right, that's enough Spider-Man chat, to be honest.
• 22:36
  SPEAKER_01: I'm bored now.
• 22:38
  SPEAKER_02: Right.
• 22:38
SPEAKER_02: Should we talk about something you've been to see?
• 22:40
SPEAKER_02: Should we talk about the end of Oak Street and JJ Abrams' return?
• 22:44
SPEAKER_02: Well, no, he didn't even direct it, did he?
• 22:46
  SPEAKER_02: He's just a producer.
• 22:47
SPEAKER_01: It's just a bad robot film, he's just produced.
• 22:49
  SPEAKER_01: Right.
• 22:49
  SPEAKER_01: Um Yes, let's.
• 22:52
SPEAKER_01: And it's yet another film starring everyone's favourite actress, Anne Hathaway, who I think has just been ramming him in as much as she can before she gives birth.
• 23:01
SPEAKER_02: She's got a kid to pay for, yeah.
• 23:04
SPEAKER_01: Um, yeah, I mean, because she's obviously not got enough money to pay for um a kid at the moment.
• 23:10
SPEAKER_01: And people have been questioning whether her baby bump was real.
• 23:12
SPEAKER_01: Like, people are going to start on that.
• 23:14
  SPEAKER_02: It's weird.
• 23:15
  SPEAKER_01: People are weird.
• 23:16
SPEAKER_01: So, yeah, directed and written by David Robert Mitchell.
• 23:19
  SPEAKER_01: Oh.
• 23:20
  SPEAKER_01: The It Follows guy.
• 23:22
SPEAKER_01: The guy from It Follows, yes.
• 23:24
SPEAKER_01: Not the guy from Peep Show, who I don't think is Robert.
• 23:27
SPEAKER_01: Uh is he just David Mitchell?
• 23:29
  SPEAKER_02: I think he's just David Mitchell.
• 23:31
SPEAKER_01: Because I was slightly confused for a second.
• 23:35
SPEAKER_01: Um, so yes, the the the director of um It Follows.
• 23:39
SPEAKER_01: It is a dinosaur movie.
• 23:41
SPEAKER_01: So it is um I and I'm not giving anything away here because this is kind of in the trailer.
• 23:47
SPEAKER_01: A Oak Street, the sort of area gets blipped and taken back into the Jurassic or period when there were dinosaurs.
• 23:59
SPEAKER_01: Well, whether it was the Jurassic period or a different period of history, because there are multiple where dinosaurs existed, it's blipped back and suddenly everyone in that street is just stuck 300 odd million years ago, and they kind of have to fend for themselves and figure out what the hell's happened and get through it.
• 24:20
SPEAKER_01: And Anne Hathaway and Ewan McGregor star, they're kind of the leads with their two kids, and they're kind of going through marital problems and and it sets it up nicely with with all that kind of stuff, and then yeah, dinosaurs run around, they have to run away.
• 24:37
  SPEAKER_01: It's a bit of fun.
• 24:38
SPEAKER_01: It's an hour and 40 minutes, which is absolutely amazing in my book for a film nowadays.
• 24:43
SPEAKER_01: It's fun, there are dinosaurs.
• 24:45
SPEAKER_01: I like the design of the dinosaurs, they're all a bit fluffy and feathery.
• 24:49
SPEAKER_01: Um, there are some fun moments with the dinosaurs, some silly moments with the dinosaurs.
• 24:54
SPEAKER_01: Um, there's plenty of chases where the dinosaurs should have caught them and eaten them within two seconds, but for some reason the dinosaurs slow down while chasing humans.
• 25:03
SPEAKER_01: Well, they want to give them a fair crack, which I think we've all seen in dinosaur films.
• 25:07
  SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
• 25:07
SPEAKER_02: Jurassic World, when she's running in her high heels and the T-Rex just can't catch her.
• 25:12
SPEAKER_01: Just can't catch her up because they were notoriously slow, those T-Rex.
• 25:16
SPEAKER_01: Um, so yeah, so there's lots of bits like that, which is which is all part of the fun.
• 25:20
SPEAKER_01: Um I won't I won't do any spoilers because I know you've not seen it yet, but the the end's quite quite interesting.
• 25:27
SPEAKER_01: There's sort of some moral questions kind of raised at the end as well, um, which which is interesting.
• 25:32
SPEAKER_01: Um kind of more for you to then leave the cinema with.
• 25:35
SPEAKER_01: It doesn't deal with them itself, it just stuff happens at the end, and you're kind of left thinking, huh.
• 25:40
SPEAKER_01: Was that the right thing to do or not?
• 25:42
  SPEAKER_01: Interesting.
• 25:43
SPEAKER_01: Um so I will I'll leave that to you and we can m discuss that next time maybe.
• 25:47
  SPEAKER_01: But no, fun.
• 25:48
  SPEAKER_01: Uh I think it's gonna it's interesting.
• 25:50
SPEAKER_01: It's an original film, it's from a sort of indie director, it's um an 80 million budget, which is big.
• 26:01
SPEAKER_01: Uh and not I'm hope I hope it does well enough to to justify that budget.
• 26:05
SPEAKER_01: I hope it gets to at least 200 million worldwide um to to to justify that budget because I want um I want original films.
• 26:14
SPEAKER_02: Well, this seems like the type of thing that a few years ago would be a very safe bet.
• 26:19
SPEAKER_02: You know, you've got two big stars, Anne Hathaway coming off the back of Odyssey, Ewan McGregor, everyone loves Ewan McGregor.
• 26:26
  SPEAKER_02: It's I mean, I again I appreciate it's not J.J.
• 26:29
  SPEAKER_02: Abrams directed, but it's got J.J.
• 26:30
SPEAKER_02: Abrams' name attached to it.
• 26:32
SPEAKER_02: I would have seen this easy breaking 300 mil, you know, like not a not a massive movie, but certainly enough of a return for you to be like, yeah, solid.
• 26:42
SPEAKER_02: But again, you just don't know these days, like with just how these types of films put mid-budget movies, how will it perform?
• 26:50
  SPEAKER_02: We do not know.
• 26:52
SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I mean, funny that we're talking about an 80 million budget as being mid-budget there.
• 26:56
  SPEAKER_01: Isn't that, isn't it?
• 26:57
SPEAKER_01: I mean, it's done 47 million in its opening weekend worldwide, so it needs to it needs to 4x that really to get to where it needs to be.
• 27:06
  SPEAKER_01: And it that's that's a lot to do.
• 27:09
SPEAKER_01: It's got to stick around.
• 27:10
SPEAKER_01: It's got to hope that the the new releases coming out aren't gonna keep you away from it.
• 27:15
SPEAKER_01: It's a 12A, it could easily have gone for 15 and been a bit more graphic with some of the stuff, but it obviously has gone 12A.
• 27:20
SPEAKER_01: There were a lot of kids in the screening I went to, so you know, dinosaurs always kind of appeal to to the younger demographic as well.
• 27:28
SPEAKER_01: So I I hope it sticks around.
• 27:29
SPEAKER_01: I hope it um I hope it does well.
• 27:31
  SPEAKER_01: It's fun.
• 27:32
SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I certainly had fun with it for an hour and forty minutes.
• 27:35
SPEAKER_01: It you know, if you're looking for something to to just go and have a bit of fun with this summer, then I I I suggest going and checking it out.
• 27:41
SPEAKER_02: I mean, looking at what is to come, I I it's not got a lot of competition in sort of Coyote versus Acme.
• 27:49
SPEAKER_02: Um, you know, the hood we did absolutely terrible.
• 27:54
SPEAKER_00: I've heard some absolutely terrible reviews for that.
• 27:58
  SPEAKER_02: Really?
• 27:58
SPEAKER_02: It's got 95% on Ran Tomatoes, but you know.
• 28:01
  SPEAKER_00: Right, okay.
• 28:02
SPEAKER_02: I'm less less excited for the Dog Stars, the um release got to new picture, to be completely honest.
• 28:09
SPEAKER_01: You know, I quite I quite liked the trailer for that.
• 28:11
  SPEAKER_01: I'll be interested.
• 28:12
SPEAKER_01: I'll be interested in that one.
• 28:14
SPEAKER_01: You know, uh for another zombie.
• 28:15
  SPEAKER_02: I mean, I don't know.
• 28:19
  SPEAKER_02: No, I'm not.
• 28:20
  SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I d I don't know.
• 28:21
  SPEAKER_02: I think we'll see.
• 28:21
SPEAKER_02: Maybe Spider-Man will just keep making millions and millions and poor um at the end of Oak Street.
• 28:27
  SPEAKER_02: I one big thing.
• 28:28
SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I mean there's certainly there's certainly no there certainly aren't any other big, big um sort of box office behemoths coming out in the in the coming weeks.
• 28:40
SPEAKER_01: I th I mean I'm trying just looking through to trying to see when the next really big movie is coming out, and it is a quite a wait.
• 28:46
  SPEAKER_01: Who knows though?
• 28:47
SPEAKER_01: So maybe it'll stick around, maybe it'll do alright, yeah.
• 28:50
SPEAKER_01: I mean it is it's quite a wait for the next big one, to be honest.
• 28:54
  SPEAKER_02: Why isn't it?
• 28:55
  SPEAKER_01: Unless I'm missing something.
• 28:56
  SPEAKER_01: I don't know.
• 28:57
  SPEAKER_01: I don't I've not got to it yet.
• 28:58
SPEAKER_02: Is it cla is it clayface?
• 28:59
SPEAKER_02: Is it clayface in October?
• 29:02
SPEAKER_01: Certainly not her private hell at the end of September, I'll tell you that now.
• 29:07
  SPEAKER_01: Um wow.
• 29:08
SPEAKER_01: I'm I'm I'm cycling through now to see what we've got to come.
• 29:13
SPEAKER_01: And in terms of like blockbusters, it's very thin on the ground.
• 29:18
SPEAKER_01: Street Fighter on the 16th of October, maybe?
• 29:21
  SPEAKER_02: Yeah, come on.
• 29:23
SPEAKER_01: Clayface on the 23rd, yeah.
• 29:24
SPEAKER_01: There's it it it it can stick around for quite a while, um, I would say.
• 29:30
SPEAKER_01: I would say it's got the chance to stick around for quite a while.
• 29:34
SPEAKER_01: Um I think there's another Resident Evil film coming out.
• 29:38
SPEAKER_01: Hunger Games, new one new Hunger Games comes out at some point.
• 29:42
SPEAKER_01: I'm not quite sure when that'll be hopefully be quite big.
• 29:46
  SPEAKER_01: But yeah.
• 29:47
SPEAKER_01: But also, I mean, it means it's go and see that if you like a big one, but there's lots of interesting films coming out as well soon, including uh film I saw at Cannes, Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma, which uh I if you go back to the the Can episode I'm sure I talked about, but I can talk about a little bit more.
• 30:04
SPEAKER_01: You've not seen it yet, have you?
• 30:06
SPEAKER_01: No, I've got tickets for it on Friday.
• 30:08
SPEAKER_01: So I won't give too much away, but it is it is great fun.
• 30:12
SPEAKER_01: Um, some really great filmmaking in it, some like lovely practical sets with painted back cloths, um, like really sort of sort of nods to uh films of the past, nods to sort of harrow horror franchises, um, it's a bit of a meta film in that sense.
• 30:32
  SPEAKER_01: It it's just it's good fun.
• 30:34
  SPEAKER_01: It's good fun.
• 30:34
SPEAKER_01: The two lead performances are fantastic.
• 30:37
SPEAKER_01: Um Gillian Anderson is brilliant in it, and there's a lot of sweets.
• 30:42
SPEAKER_01: So if you um if you like gummies, as they call them in the film, um, which are sort of your softer sweets, you have bows that they don't seem to have in America for sweet.
• 30:52
SPEAKER_01: Yeah, um, they they they they talk about gummy sweets a lot, and there's a lot of there's a lot of candy in the film.
• 30:59
SPEAKER_01: Um but yeah, it's fun.
• 31:01
SPEAKER_01: It's I mean, it sets its stall out very early with the level of violence, and you'll very much enjoy there's one party scene about midway through, which um is just I just absolutely loved and thought was absolutely brilliant.
• 31:17
SPEAKER_01: So yeah, I mean if you if if you've seen all the big stuff, or if you can't be asked with the big stuff, as I normally can't, and you just want to go and watch something a bit uh cool and different, and Teenage Sex and Death at Cat Miasma is out this Friday, the 21st of August.
• 31:32
SPEAKER_01: So I would strongly advise going and checking that out.
• 31:36
SPEAKER_01: And then I'll be on holiday.
• 31:38
SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I mean I'll go see it.
• 31:40
SPEAKER_02: When I get the when I I'll go to the screening of it, that that much I will say.
• 31:44
SPEAKER_02: Because I am I like a Ridley Ridley Scott rarely lets me down, except when he does, famously.
• 31:50
SPEAKER_02: Gladiator too, I'm looking at you.
• 31:52
  SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah.
• 31:54
SPEAKER_02: Yeah, it's just the most it's it's the one that's at the forefront of my mind.
• 31:57
SPEAKER_02: If if, however, you can't afford the cinema and you do have an HBO Max subscription, I can recommend a TV show.
• 32:04
SPEAKER_02: Because I would recommend lanterns, because I know mentioned earlier I had been very busy with a DCU um project.
• 32:11
SPEAKER_02: So this is a TV show about the Green Lanterns, and I know those of you who know the character will be terrified at the mere mention because obviously we had the Ryan Reynolds movie from God over a decade ago now, which might be one of the worst films ever made.
• 32:26
SPEAKER_02: It's gen it will it will make you hate Ryan Reynolds more than you probably already hate Ryan Reynolds.
• 32:33
SPEAKER_02: Um it's just but this is really quite good, very different, very low uh low-key, it's quite interesting.
• 32:40
SPEAKER_02: Um it's got Kyle Chanya, Tambler, and Erin Pierre as sort of the two Green Lanterns.
• 32:46
SPEAKER_02: And I can't lie, they're basically doing a true detective set in the DCU.
• 32:52
SPEAKER_02: That's basically what it's trying to be.
• 32:54
SPEAKER_02: And it's really effective mystery.
• 32:56
  SPEAKER_02: Like it's really compelling.
• 32:58
SPEAKER_02: I don't think it's quite as grown up as it is sort of like the marketing would want you to believe.
• 33:03
SPEAKER_02: The marketing definitely wants you to think you're watching, you know, a new Twin Peaks, a new sort of like, you know, gritty, dark uh TV show along those lines.
• 33:12
SPEAKER_02: I think it's probably it's got it's having a little more fun than that, but it's a really impressive show.
• 33:17
SPEAKER_02: I think um Carl Chandler and uh, as I say, Aaron Pierre, absolutely fantastic in it.
• 33:22
SPEAKER_02: Like, genuinely have such good banter, such good chemistry.
• 33:26
SPEAKER_02: The first episode is out tonight on Sky, and I think is available to watch already if you've got the streaming service.
• 33:31
SPEAKER_02: But I absolutely loved it, thought it was brilliant.
• 33:34
SPEAKER_02: I've seen seven of the eight, and I'm really annoyed that I don't have the eighth episode to watch.
• 33:39
SPEAKER_02: Um, so I can't really recommend it more than that.
• 33:43
SPEAKER_02: Uh, I fell off that.
• 33:44
SPEAKER_02: I love that you felt what what did you make of the bear?
• 33:47
  SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
• 33:48
SPEAKER_02: I really dis I didn't like season three, I th and I thought season four was okay.
• 33:53
SPEAKER_02: So I really was in no rush for the bear season five.
• 33:56
SPEAKER_02: I thought it was fantastic, but genuinely such a satisfying ending to that show.
• 34:01
  SPEAKER_02: Yeah, of course.
• 34:02
  SPEAKER_02: Yes.
• 34:02
SPEAKER_02: Oh well, yeah, I'd say that.
• 34:04
SPEAKER_02: And they've and seeing characters you like get a win is always nice television, which is why, Neil, you should go watch Ted Lasso.
• 34:11
SPEAKER_02: Now, you're very, very wrong.
• 34:13
  SPEAKER_02: You you're you're gone, gone.
• 34:16
SPEAKER_02: Oh wow, it's taking you that long to get to Uncut Gems.
• 34:19
SPEAKER_02: I mean, it it is a superb movie.
• 34:21
  SPEAKER_02: It is extremely stressful.
• 34:22
SPEAKER_02: When I went to see it, funnily enough, I went to see it uh at home in Manchester, and Carl was sat two rows behind me at that first screening of the day, which was a nice which which was a nice surprise.
• 34:34
SPEAKER_02: But uh my friend Cam, it was a sold-out screening, and my friend Cam was sat next to this woman, and she had a similar experience to Amy in that she found it far too stressful.
• 34:46
SPEAKER_02: It was clearly too much for her, but because she'd paid like her£7.50 for her ticket, she was determined to sit all the way through it.
• 34:54
