- 2:24Well, y'all listening, enjoyment, John lund As, Johnny Don Tom
- 2:30Lesly, Johnny, I'm sending you a check for twenty five thousand dollars by
- 2:34special Messengers. Well, thanks, I can use it. You're going to
- 2:36buy a painting with it in Detroit, the seventeenth century masterpiece Goal of the
- 2:38River, painted by Johan Rugel. Why it was stolen eleven years ago from
- 2:44my lane. We paint the claim one. It a cool hundred and twenty
- 2:46thousand dollars. We just got a tip we can buy it back for twenty
- 2:50five Well, you know how I feel about paying off for the return of
- 2:53stolen property. And you know how we feel about taking one hundred and twenty
- 2:57thousand dollars long yeah, well, oh okay, but I won't like it.
- 3:12Right now, I'd like to take a few minutes of your time to
- 3:14pass on a thought which incidentally confirms time. According to the Bible, to
- 3:21everything, there is a season at a time to every purpose under the heaven.
- 3:28We all agree on that, I'm sure. And we'll also agree that
- 3:31the regulation of time also depends on the season. For example, did it
- 3:38ever occur to you who decided where our four time zones in America should be
- 3:43exactly? Well, that maybe seventy five years ago there were about one hundred
- 3:47and fifty different time zones, which were set up according to the whim of
- 3:52the local inhabitants. Most of the time was called sun times, and there
- 3:57could be fifteen minutes difference between clocks of two towns only ten miles apart.
- 4:02So to get rid of the confusion, the Interstate Commerce Commission was established.
- 4:08It divided the United States into four standard time zones so that railroads, planes,
- 4:14buses, and the mail could run on schedules. Of course, if
- 4:17the city wants to go on daylight saving time during the summer. That's the
- 4:21decision, which is made locally. The standard time remains the same everywhere else,
- 4:28but setting the nation's clock isn't the only job of the Interstate Commerce Commission,
- 4:31however. It also makes rules and regulations for the various means of transportation
- 4:36which go from one state to another. It sees that railroads, truck line
- 4:43barges, and boats operate safely, charge reasonable rates, and give good,
- 4:47dependable service. It also protects trucks and bus drivers from working such long hours
- 4:54that they might fall asleep while they're driving. The Commission also demands that trains,
- 5:00engines, and machines have safety and stop devices. It is in itself
- 5:05a safety device to assure every one of us freedom from danger as we travel
- 5:11about Our company expense accounts permitted by a special investigators Johnny Dollars to home Office
- 5:30Eastern Indemnity and Insurance Company, Hartford, Connecticut. The following is an accounting
- 5:34of expenditures during my investigation of the Jan Brugo matter. Expensi count ADOM one
- 5:45ten ten air fair and incidentals between Hartford and Detroit, Michigan. Expensive count
- 5:49adom two one dollar cab fare from the Statler Hotel where I checked in to
- 5:55the Masters and Art Galeries on Woodward Avenue, A rather nervous little man came
- 6:02scurrying up from behind some below a draperies to greet me. If it's yeah,
- 6:09acting we could do here today? Are you mister Masterson? And listen?
- 6:14Oh no, no, Newston has no I'm a hacker. I'm no,
- 6:16you're gonna hacker. You might say, I'm mister Masterson's generals hack children
- 6:19around you general, I'd be more than pleased to do you a service to
- 6:25you if I knew that. Well, thanks, I'd like to talk to
- 6:27mister Masterson personally. Yes, of course, of course, got way this
- 6:30way. What'd you think We're having a wonderful exhibitive modernistic Expressionism and the West
- 6:38Gallery this afternoon, because you're a little bit early for that. If that's
- 6:43your reason for being here, it's not well, oh that's true, this
- 6:47is. But then perhaps you heard of the new headband goal we're just getting
- 6:50in is stunning taking Oh it's you stunning? Perhaps you come see up then?
- 6:57Well, thanks for your trouble, mister hacker. I think then,
- 7:00oh it is that's the Masterson's office is Oh, years, of course,
- 7:06but I'm glad you've been in servicing agad. I'm very glad. I'm Johnny
- 7:15Darlin at the Masterson for Mason and Demasy. Oh. Yes, the insurance
- 7:18Thames coming, mister Dunnan. Thanks. You know there's quite a nobody to
- 7:24me, mister Dulan acting as a goal between and the return of stolen property.
- 7:28Yeah, I imagine it is. Would you mind telling me how you
- 7:30got involved? When it's cool? Thank you? When anazime poem to a
- 7:35homofs a man came in here a few days ago, he wanted me to
- 7:40place a painting for him. Did he have a painting with him? He
- 7:42did. The moment he showed it to me, I recognized it for what
- 7:45it was, the river by Yeah, I'm google you know it was stolen
- 7:47property, a famous masterpiecement saying, of course, but what happened then?
- 7:53It was my intention to detain him on some pretext until I could form the
- 7:57police, but it became suspicious left always his next mode. Yesterday morning he
- 8:03called me on the telephone and offered me a commission if I would act as
- 8:05intermediary. I was getting touched with the insurance company and have one of them
- 8:09men here this afternoon at four o'clock. He's going to call back then huh
- 8:15two thirty. Now, yes, that gives you an hour and a house
- 8:18in which you can make plans for capturing him and recovering the painting. I'm
- 8:22a friend is not going to work out that way. There's a little thing
- 8:26called a statute of limitations working in his favor. In this particular case,
- 8:31it expired some years ago. You mean that even if you can prove this
- 8:35man who stole the painting, he can't be prossecut the point. That's right
- 8:39incredible. But then I suppose it's worth it. At least a mansterpiece will
- 8:45be returned to the world again. I guess that's one way of looking at
- 8:48it expens to come out of three one dollar ninety five cents cab fare the
- 8:58police headquarters at thirty one hundred Bobians up on the fourth or I introduced myself
- 9:03to Lieutenant Griswold or the Robbery Division, who brought out the original file.
- 9:07Ever case it wasn't too informative. I can't say that apart and play proud
- 9:13of the take of a file. Dollar, why notherson. We worked in
- 9:16the case for over a year. There's a result, pages of reports.
- 9:20Everyone may get it. We do a complete point. Ah was your personal
- 9:22reaction? Do you have any particular hunches or ideas? Yeah? One,
- 9:26only it didn't play off or was it? I figured it was an inside
- 9:31job, maybe involving Selena Jeffers Selina Jeffers Lauren Jeffers's daughters. Oh, only
- 9:37surviving member the family. Now, she was about eighteen at that time,
- 9:41setting art or what set you off on her? One of the maids said
- 9:45Selene had fallen in love with a picture, had a real fixation on it.
- 9:48One of the old man jefferds to hang it in her room, not
- 9:50let anybody else see it. I thought it was the greatest thing that'd ever
- 9:52been put on canvas. Couldn't tie up with it, though, I see,
- 9:58And that's about it. Dollar, no sention you are to game into
- 10:01it again. At the stage of the game, I'd say, you better
- 10:03make you deal. That's what you want to do. It's not looks like
- 10:07I'll have to expect to got out of four two dollars and five cents cab
- 10:18fare back to the Masterson Galleries. The phone at Masterson's desk rang prompt theay
- 10:22at four o'clock. Hello, you're not master. Oh oh you're the insurance
- 10:31boy. That's right. Who are you? Get the questions? Ma,
- 10:33I can put it down twenty one thirty five North to Versey at ten thirty
- 10:39to morrow morning, Apartment three B at the twenty five random cash with you
- 10:43small bills, nothing bigger than a fifty That will make quite a load to
- 10:46carry around. You want the payton back? Do as I say? Okay,
- 10:52well, I'm bringing someone along to identify that painting for me. Sure,
- 10:56bring the whole police department of you want. You can't better wrap on
- 10:58me? Do you guys a favorite? Yeah? I know, and you're
- 11:03getting well paid for it too. I expected to come out of five three
- 11:11dollars and ninety five cents cabs there out to seventeen thirty five Cannon Road in
- 11:16Ghost Point, Solana. Jeffers was standing near the edge of a bluff overlooking
- 11:20Lake Saint Clair, busily painting the view. My arrival didn't disturb a concentration
- 11:26in the least. Do you think we were going to recover the John Bogle
- 11:31landscape? Mister dollar Well, it looks like it, mister Jeffers, I
- 11:35suppose that has some connection, would you who get it out here? Yes?
- 11:41It has. I thought you might be interested in buying it back.
- 11:45Why, well, don't belong to your family. I understand you used to
- 11:48think a good deal of it. Yes, I did. That was years
- 11:52ago. I'm not interested in buying it now. It's pretty modern since days,
- 11:58I think. Well, I just thought i'd ask anything else has to
- 12:03die. Yeah, maybe you'd like to do me a favor tomorrow. Come
- 12:09along with me when I buy a picture bank. Oh, I need someone
- 12:13to identify it. And one of the hack does not ers to do that
- 12:16for you. They couldn't identify the man who's selling it to me if he's
- 12:20somebody out of your family's pass But if I can identify this Christmas, isn't
- 12:26it some time limitation or something on prosecutions of this sort. Oh, don't
- 12:31worry. You won't send him to jail. And I say, I'll see
- 12:33the purpose. Maybe it's just because I'm curious. Well, the Jeffers,
- 12:39I'll go with you to come out on six four dollars and ten cents cabs
- 12:50her back to the Statler where I remained until the following morning. At ten
- 12:54am, I went to the bank where I catch your check. At ten
- 12:56fifteen, Selena Jeffers picked me up and then Blue Eldorado. At ten thirty
- 13:01we stood in the dingy corridor of a cheap apartment hotel at twenty one thirty
- 13:05five North Diversity. The name on the door of apartment three D was Eddie
- 13:11Travers. Yeah, I'm Johnny Dollar. Oh in sears, boy, come
- 13:20in Dollar, Thank you. Doll's going to check the painting for you.
- 13:26That's right, you got the door. Oh I'm not carrying laundry in this
- 13:31money bag. Very cute. Let's con let's see the painting. Okay,
- 13:37let don't try any funny stuff. I got friends in the next room.
- 13:39This way a baby. It's in the closet, all right, here it
- 13:45is? How about it? The shepherd. That's the point of who's the
- 13:50dollar? You're sure? Positive? Okay? Here's the money, Trevors.
- 13:56Don't mind if I con it? Now? Do you? Dollar? No?
- 13:58Right? There any reason? Who I suld wait around? Mister dollars?
- 14:03What about this fellow traveling I've never don before. You're sure about that?
- 14:07That's as sure as I am about to kildon. Sounds like you hope
- 14:11that doll might have put a finger on me. Dollar. Well, I
- 14:13just like to play all the angles driving. Sorry, everyone didn't looked out
- 14:16for you, mister Dollar. Do you ever happen to recover any good modern
- 14:20impressionist? Look me up again, I might be interested in duying. No,
- 14:22Samiel, I'll keep that in mind. Mis difference and thanks. You
- 14:28know something I don't figure you. Insurance guys. What's it to you?
- 14:31How I may got him? Mister you, we'll go out of your pocket.
- 14:35Guy like you always looks at it that way. Oh it's so bad
- 14:37about that? Oh nothing, if you like your view obstructed by bars.
- 14:50I expected to come Adam seven three dollars and forty five cents cab fare first
- 14:54to Masterson's Galleries, where I left the painting to be held until you decided
- 14:58what to do with it. I'm back to the Staffler Hotel. In spite
- 15:03of my brave remarks to Eddie Travers, I still had no more idea of
- 15:07how to change the course of events than I'd had when I arrived. I
- 15:11expect to kind of Adam eight fifteen dollars and seventy five cents, hotel dlle,
- 15:13miscellaneous and transportation to the airport. Mister dollars dollars, Yeah, you
- 15:28remember me, mister Maryland has mister masters assistant. Oh yeah, yeah,
- 15:35I remember when they told me you chest how to go hotel. I oh,
- 15:39I was stunned. I was her off it. I wouldn't get him
- 15:41time and time for what the tell mister dollars. Is it true that you
- 15:46brought that Bogle landscape to the gallery? Yeah? Yeah, that's right.
- 15:50Oh man, man, you paid twenty five thousand dollars for it. I
- 15:54did. Oh. Oh, I really don't know how to tell me what
- 16:02well that picture? The Brugal lens states, I think aportant. You know,
- 16:22many great men have attained the highest office in our land, the presidency
- 16:26of the United States. Can you guess the name of this man? He
- 16:29was only twenty eighth when he was elected to the House of Representatives and the
- 16:33youngest member of the Senate, to which he was elected in eighteen thirty seven.
- 16:37During his administration, the Kansas Nebraska Bill leaving slavery to popular vote was
- 16:42passed. The Gadsden purchase from Mexico added some forty five thousand square miles of
- 16:48territory in what is now Arizona and New Mexico, and Japan opened its doors
- 16:53for the first time to trade with the United States. If you don't have
- 16:57his name by now, here's one more important clue. During his administration,
- 17:03the Republican Party as we know it today was born Huasi Franklin Pierce, fourteenth
- 17:10President of the United States. His life is part of your American heritage.
- 17:21And now, with our star Don Lund, we bring you the second act
- 17:25of yours, truly, Dolly Dollar. Merwin Hacker drove me back to the
- 17:42Masthuson's Galleries from the airport, babbling all the way everything he told me.
- 17:48En route, he said all over again. As we entered the store room
- 17:51at the rear of the galleries, let's just look at that. I'm just
- 17:57looking at it. But what's superb and us pointing me? I suppose you
- 18:03show me how you were tipped off at Hacken Well, as I told you,
- 18:07mister Dollar, think it was mere happenstance, mister mass had you left
- 18:11and I was preparing the painting for stories. I just supposed it was out
- 18:15of sheer nervousness. You know, I've never really worked with the valuable masterpieces
- 18:19this before and you know what, my hands flipped and right here, that's
- 18:25right down here in the very lowest corner right there. They don't hardly notice
- 18:26it. You see what it happened? Where right there looks like you flecked
- 18:34off a little bit of paint. That's exactly what happened, mister Dallas.
- 18:37I'm there was the proof you see. No, no, I'm afraid I
- 18:41don't. You don't look, no, look not let propresent about it.
- 18:45You see what doesn't expects the paint was flecked off. Now what do you
- 18:48see more paint under? Is? Yea? Oh men? That seems to
- 18:52be clear and shiny. No cracks in this back weaver stood off. That
- 18:57is comparitively fresh paint. If that canvas had been sentialies old, the paint
- 19:02would have been guided and cracked all the way through. Yeah. Who's the
- 19:07biggest expert in town on these things, mister Hacker, the biggest expert.
- 19:11Oh you mean on arts forgeries? Yeah, yeah, yes, I seen
- 19:15our aunt. Oh yes, oh Stephen Dorwood. It's just he's yourn Stephen
- 19:18Dirwood. Here's a studio just to feel black down on Woodwood. Oh,
- 19:22but it's such a magnificent piece of work and completely worth with. Oh I
- 19:29don't know. I just paid twenty five thousand for it. Wow, Hacker
- 19:37prepared the cannabis, taught me to take over the dirtwood. I went into
- 19:41Masterson's office and put in a cause of Lieutenant Griswold. You sure it's a
- 19:45forgery, Donner. I'm thinking it to Stephen Derwood for an opinion, But
- 19:48I don't think there's any doubts if it's the same thinging that was stolen from
- 19:52lawns Jeffers. We still haven't got anything. No, but what if it's
- 19:56not. I'll get out to pick up on any travis exposed to come out
- 20:03of nine four dollars and fifty cents cab fare first to the studios of Stephen
- 20:07Durwood. Why not got back in an hour and a half? Who saw
- 20:11mister Donald. That should give me time for a preliminary examination. But I
- 20:15can tell you right now that if this painting is affordedly, it's the most
- 20:21magnificently created prague I have ever seen. The next stop with brows point in
- 20:32the Jeffers home. Selina was in the library, curled up comfortably in a
- 20:36big easy chair, sipping a drink. This visit is a little unexpected,
- 20:40isn't it, mister Dollars. I hadn't thought i'd feel you were so soon
- 20:41Again, are you disturbed about it? Mis Jeffy? Should I do well?
- 20:47Maybe because at Brugol you identify it might be a poetry? Did he
- 20:51tell if I drink? Mister Dollars, No, thanks, would it rather
- 20:53astounding statement? You just played? Why it's not the first so masterpiece that
- 21:00turned out to be a fraud. Little more than that involved like what the
- 21:07child's dream of perfection? That's what the Bruego meant me. I worship that
- 21:12painting, mister Gollar. To me, it was a symbol of the baby
- 21:17that manned and creating an ugly, hateful world. And now you tell me
- 21:21that I've been worshiping fraud. Oh maybe not. Maybe this one is another
- 21:25painting entirely, But you don't think so was the Bruego. It was stolen
- 21:30eleven years ago of forgery in the Stepherd. But I'd already answered death.
- 21:33Well, I'm not satisfied with the answer. Didn't think about this? If
- 21:38you can pooh, that's a group of forgery or not, it's the same
- 21:41painting. It was stolen from this library. Give it back to me.
- 21:45You know, we've got a check to your insurance company for one hundred and
- 21:48twenty thousand dollars. Do you think that will satisfy against God? Well,
- 21:52it will satisfy Eastern indemnity. I tried to got out of ten three dollars
- 22:03ninety five cents. Cabs are back to Stephen Durwood Studios. He finished his
- 22:08examination of the painting and had his report ready for me. Frankly, mister
- 22:14Dollar, I am almost at a loss as to what to tell you.
- 22:18I examined the Google menu play, and I would be willing to swear that
- 22:22the canvas, the pigments, the breasts us are all genuine seventeenth centuries and
- 22:29the painting appears to have been aging for not less than three centuries. But
- 22:33you don't think it has been I might have if it weren't for the little
- 22:37flex of paint that was scraped off one of the flowers down in the corner.
- 22:42And there's something pretty strange about that, mister Dollar. What well,
- 22:48I have taken samples of paint from other spots on the canvas. The apparent
- 22:53age of oil goes all the way through only in that one spot on that
- 22:59flower, because there's pressure more modern looking paint show through. What ry explanation
- 23:06for that, mister Durbin, Well you see someone for just get that aging
- 23:10effect by bacon. They completed canvas in an electric oven. Now in this
- 23:15case it is possible be for just slipped up by failing to remove the plan
- 23:21for the pincers he used to place the canvas in the oven. Oh will
- 23:26you excuse me? Course, yes Stephen Durbin speaking, But yes he is.
- 23:37That's one moment. Please, it's for yous dollar. Oh thanks,
- 23:44Hello Christwell dollars had you might be there, you cannot head quarters? Now
- 23:48what's up with collar? We just got any travers expanse to con A.
- 23:57I'm eleven one dollar twenty five cents cab fair the police headquarters. Any travers
- 24:02wasn't very anxious to give us any answers. Well, look, I'm given
- 24:06it to you straight fellas. I don't know anything about this job. You
- 24:08turned the painting over to me for twenty five thousand drivers. Sure, sure
- 24:12I did, but I didn't have anything to do with I sing it.
- 24:15Even if I did the time has run out on that rap. Hey,
- 24:18he's right, I'm both count stellar show. He was serving time in Jackson
- 24:21when the original robbery took place. But what are you picking me up for?
- 24:23You've got nothing to who he is? How about operating a confidence game
- 24:27or conspiracy to the fraud? What are you giving me? You you wanted
- 24:33a painting and I saw it to here. There's no punk or wrap on
- 24:34that, huh? There is when you pass out of forgery for the real
- 24:37thing, bogery the paintings of phony Travers. That'll stop fraud and confidence game
- 24:44to any jury, and with a previous record, you should get ten to
- 24:48twenty without any trouble at all. Hold it, you've given it to me
- 24:52straight. That's right your hook. But good Travers? Was that little down
- 24:56rummy should have known it? What's something wrong? He laid it out for
- 25:00me. Too easy. The times run out, he says, and they
- 25:03can't catch on a thing, he says. All they gotta do is turn
- 25:06over the paintment and collect a ten percent split. He says, Look what
- 25:10happens? What's his name? Veryal big shot dropping a load week after week
- 25:14in a floating crap game, and he gets me look for twenty five sea
- 25:17what's his name? Hacker? Merwin Hacker. While Traver has dictated an official
- 25:25statement, we put in a call to the Masterson gallery. Masterson had returned
- 25:30by then and told us that Hacker had left for his home near Farmingdale about
- 25:33an hour before. It turned out to be a five acre farm well off
- 25:44the main road. We checked the house and came up with nothing. We
- 25:48had better luck at the barn. It's pretty nice. Shut up, tell
- 25:56her, yeah, all right, electric govern funny of old campuses. Looks
- 26:03like he was shut up to turn out art fortunies in a production line basis.
- 26:07Yeah, I guess it was just funny of physical evidence here with the
- 26:12exception of Marijuan Hacker himself. That's no problem, right, he's over here
- 26:21behind his practitioner. Well, he won't do what he's talking. He doesn't
- 26:29have to. A gun in his hand did it for him. After the
- 26:37homicide men took over, Griswold drove me back downtown. I picked up the
- 26:41painting at Stephen Durwood and look at the Masterson's gallery for the last time.
- 26:45We Hacker an art wounds and you must be joking with your daughter I'm afraid
- 26:52man, mister Masterson, the man who's been working for me for over fifteen
- 26:55years. How would you possibly have been conducting s an underhanded business without my
- 26:59knowing it? Frankly, I don't think he was, But because should he'd
- 27:03been forging these masterpieces? Forging them? Yes, without your knowledge? No,
- 27:11I'm confused, mister Donnan. No, it's one thing to create these
- 27:14forgeas, it's another to dispose of him. That takes a good legitimate front,
- 27:19like the masters and art galleries for instance, Correct, mister Dona.
- 27:25Now your other world will seems to be confused. Well, I was confused
- 27:27for a while trying to figure out why Hacker disclosed the forgery to me himself.
- 27:32But you'll not know. No. I think Hacker suddenly found out you
- 27:37were paying him only nominal summons for the forger reason selling him gonna tremendous profit
- 27:41to yourself. And when he learned about this latest double cross, he decided
- 27:45who could play at that game? Very interesting theory, mister Dolan, You
- 27:48too bad you can't prove him. Would you mind telling me why you stole
- 27:53the paintings from Lauren Jeffers? Not the true It was the floor in it.
- 28:00Rugu was the first word that Hacker attempted, I Sholder to Jeffers.
- 28:03After he'd been hanging for a while, the paint began to peck off in
- 28:06that one corner that was a paid Jeffers would get suspicious and called him some
- 28:10mixed woods. So you'll beat him to the punch by stealing the painting back.
- 28:12Exactly too bad. You had all that brilliant detective work for nothing.
- 28:18Who was to do him? But as you wouldn't submitted yourself. There's always
- 28:22the statute of limitations. Yeah, and there's always Merwin a hacker more the
- 28:30brother mister Donner. He's dead and there's no statue of limitations on murdered like
- 28:42fins to gout at him. Twelve one dollar and sixty cents cab fare down
- 28:47the police headquarters with Matterson and tow paraffin test showed that he's recently fired a
- 28:52gun while Merwin Hacker's hand was cleaned. Dye Travers identified Matterson as the man
- 28:57who's been passing himself off as Merwyn Hacker. Lieutenant Grigwoll says he can make
- 29:03the murder rep stick expensive content of thirteen forty nine dollars and twenty five cents
- 29:17air Fair and incidentals back to Hutford expensive count total one hundred and thirty five
- 29:22dollars and eighty five cents. Yours Truly, Johnny Dollar. Yours Truly Johnny

- 29:52Yours Truly Johnny Dollar is produce and directed behind me Delvay, Welcome back.
- 30:06Not to be too nitpicky, but I have to admit that I found the
- 30:11whole thing. With him taking the woman who had once owned the picture to
- 30:22identify it without bringing an expert to authenticate it. That's a that's kind of
- 30:32stretch the lines of credibility when you're handing someone twenty five thousand dollars in cold
- 30:38hard cash, and the expert would have been better able to tell if it
- 30:45was a forgery. Of course, this appears to be a clever, well
- 30:48done forgery, because even the expert he took it to really had to look
- 30:53and study it find it so not certain how much good it would have been
- 30:57done, but it's kind of hard to believe him handing over twenty five thousand
- 31:03dollars in cash without bringing along a certified art expert. Of course, we
- 31:08also got to hear William Johnstone, in his varied history as a character actor,
- 31:18playing the villain. Well, tomorrow we get to hear William Johnstone playing
- 31:22the hero when we play the lineup for you. Well, that will actually
- 31:26do it for today. We will be back, as I said, tomorrow
- 31:30with the lineup and join us next Friday for yours truly, Johnny Dowler.
