- 0:01Speaker 1: Now we turn to the Mountain Eagle to read news
- 0:04from Wisburg. Your reader today is Bill den Arsdale. We
- 0:09will begin with the edition dated August six, twenty twenty five,
- 0:14which the publishers have donated to RADIOI as a reminder.
- 0:18RADIOI is a reading service intended for people who are
- 0:21blind or have other disabilities that make it difficult to
- 0:24read printed material. The first headline is design work may
- 0:31soon begin on new resort at Raven Rock. The Eky
- 0:37Heritage Foundation has issued a request for qualifications for an
- 0:41architecture and engineering firm to design a lodge style convention
- 0:46center on top of Pine Mountain at Raven Rock, overlooking
- 0:50the city Jenkins. The advertisement in this week's newspaper is
- 0:54seeking someone to design the eight thousand, five hundred square
- 0:58foot lodge with a three thousand, five hundred square foot deck,
- 1:02a one hundred space parking lot, an access road, and
- 1:06five miles of soft surface hiking and biking trails. The
- 1:11design work will include all the infrastructure for the facility
- 1:15and a trailhead with a vaulted toilet similar to the
- 1:18one on Pine Mountain near Wisburg. I think plans could
- 1:22take up to six months. Once we hire an architect
- 1:25or engineer, said Jeffrey Justice, executive director of Pine Mountain Partnership,
- 1:31which is a partnership among e k Y Heritage Foundation,
- 1:34Lester County, and the cities of Whitsburg, Jenkins, and Fleming, Neon.
- 1:40It is an aml e R grant, so it might
- 1:43take a while for it to be completed. Aml E
- 1:47ER stands for Abandoned Mined Land's Economic Revitalization. The federal
- 1:53grant program was created as a pilot program during the
- 1:56last year of the Obama administration to improve the economy
- 2:00in coal counties that suffered job losses because of the
- 2:03downturn in the coal economy. The grant for Raven Rock
- 2:08is six point two million dollars and is a reimbursement grant.
- 2:13EKY Heritage Project manager Claude Little said that means the
- 2:18money isn't sitting in a bank account for the organization.
- 2:21EKY will have to spend money first then ask for
- 2:24reimbursements from the granting agency. Little said the exact location
- 2:30of the lodge will be determined by the engineers and architects,
- 2:34but will be off US twenty three just inside Kentucky.
- 2:38Visitors to the site from Virginia will turn right immediately
- 2:42after crossing the state line at Pound Gap and drive
- 2:45up the mountain to the lodge. Eky Heritage Foundation, a
- 2:50nonprofit company, bought more than eight hundred acres on the
- 2:54side of the mountain several years ago, including a raven Rock.
- 2:58It used a state appropriation earlier this year to hire
- 3:02trail planners for the initial design of the trails in
- 3:04the area, and an architect is currently working on designs
- 3:08for rental cabins that will be placed near the lodge.
- 3:13While the group is calling the building to be planned
- 3:15now a lodge, it will not include guest rooms. The
- 3:19building will include meeting space and possibly a restaurant. Raven
- 3:24Rock was at one time a recreational area owned by
- 3:27Beth Elkhorn Coal, and the road has been gated and
- 3:31the site posted no trespassing for years. The site is
- 3:35about a mile off the highway behind a Civil War memorial.
- 3:41The next story is Defense asks that Steins's site test
- 3:47be released before August fifteenth. A hearing has been set
- 3:52for Friday, August fifteenth for a judge to determine whether
- 3:55former Sheriff Mickey Stein's should be released on bond and
- 3:59whether the burder indictment against him should be dismissed. In
- 4:03a motion filed after Eagle press time on Tuesday, the
- 4:07defense attorney for Steins asked that a psychological report on
- 4:10Stein's be unsealed before the hearing so it can use
- 4:14portions of the report at the hearing to support his
- 4:17defense and ensure the court has a full and fair
- 4:20understanding of the relevant facts. Steins is facing a charge
- 4:25of murder in the shooting death of District Judge Kevin R.
- 4:29Mullins on September nineteenth, twenty twenty four in the judge's
- 4:33chambers in the Letcher County Courthouse. Judge Christopher Coran of
- 4:38the Eighth Circuit in Warren and Edmondson County has been
- 4:42appointed special judge in the case and has said he
- 4:45would hold any bond hearing in the case in Letcher County.
- 4:49While the hearing is on the docket for Letcher Circuit Court,
- 4:51there is no room assigned for it, and it was
- 4:54not clear whether the hearing will be conducted here or
- 4:57in Bowling Green. In the next headline, historical marker honoring
- 5:04early letters settler missing a second time in a county
- 5:10where a large part of the population can trace their
- 5:13lineage to veterans of Revolutionary War. One of the most
- 5:17disrespected men in these parts is a Revolutionary War veteran.
- 5:22It's not that he's disrespected by his descendants nor by history.
- 5:26In fact, he is revered as one of the founding
- 5:29fathers of Letcher County. But despite his status as one
- 5:33of the first permanent settlers in the area, Arcola's Craft
- 5:37just can't get a break. He was recognized on a
- 5:42historical marker near Craft's College for years as a veteran
- 5:45of the Battle of Hanging Rock and the Battle of
- 5:48Utah Springs, the last battle in the Carolinas during the Revolution.
- 5:53But three years ago the bronze marker disappeared entirely, and
- 5:58now history repeats itself. It was gone after the flood,
- 6:02but it was put back up, and now it's gone again,
- 6:06said Richard Smith, one of many in Letcher County who
- 6:09can trace their family tree directly to Old Archolis. Both
- 6:14The Mountain Eagle and Smith called the Kentucky Department of
- 6:17Transportation to point out that Craft's marker is nowhere to
- 6:21be found, and they promised to put it back up
- 6:23a second time. The guy says, if it's not up
- 6:27by Friday, to call him back, and he would take action.
- 6:29Smith said. Born on Christmas Day seventeen forty nine on
- 6:36the Roanoke River in North Carolina, he served three tours
- 6:40in the North Carolina Militia during the Revolutionary War. In
- 6:44seventeen seventy eight, he fought the Indians who sided with
- 6:48the British, and in seventeen eighty he and his fellow
- 6:51North Carolina militiamen attacked the British at Hanging Rock, South Carolina,
- 6:56a blow that weakened the loyalists in the South. A
- 7:00little more than a year later, in September seventeen eighty one,
- 7:04they attacked the British forces again, this time at Utah Springs.
- 7:09With muskets, cannons, and bayonets. The militia of the Continental
- 7:13Line and even refugees from the Carolinas fought the British
- 7:17to a draw before both sides decided they'd had enough
- 7:20and retreated. Arcolus survived the battle and the war. In
- 7:26seventeen eighty five, he married Elizabeth Adams, and they had
- 7:30nine children together. They followed her father John and uncle
- 7:34Spencer from Wilkes County, North Carolina to Letcher County in
- 7:38eighteen o four, and they settled near may King. Arcolus
- 7:43started a plantation on what was once called Craft's Colony
- 7:47and is now called Craft's Collie. Arcolas Craft died there
- 7:52at the ripe old age one hundred three and was
- 7:54buried on his plantation. It's there that the disrespect began.
- 8:01Craft's grave and the graves of several relatives were peaceful
- 8:05until around sixty five years ago, when someone removed their gravestones,
- 8:10plowed their cemetery, and planted corn over their bodies. Now
- 8:14there is no indication of where the graves may actually
- 8:17be in the grassy fenced area. Like the marker beside
- 8:22Us one nineteen, the headstones and footstones are long gone.
- 8:27Only the cemetery is marked by a granite memorial placed
- 8:30next to the fence facing the road up the hollow,
- 8:35dedicated to Archillus Archylis Craft December twenty fifth, seventeen forty
- 8:40nine to November eighth, eighteen fifty three. The stone says
- 8:44Revolutionary War soldier Private of North Carolina and his wife
- 8:49Elizabeth Adams, buried one hundred fifty northeast of this location.
- 8:55It's a small notation compared to the historical marker that
- 8:58is now missing from the highway. The wording of that
- 9:01marker reads Arculus. Craft of Wilkes County, North Carolina was
- 9:07with small band of pioneers who immigrated to Upper Kentucky
- 9:10River Valley in eighteen o four. Born December twenty fifth,
- 9:14seventeen forty nine in Roanoke River area. Craft was a
- 9:18veteran of Revolutionary War. He fought in battles of Hanging
- 9:22Rock and Utah Springs. He died November eighth, eighteen fifty three.
- 9:27His unmarked grave is three miles north on Craft's Collie.
- 9:33The next story is man rents a Tesla is billed
- 9:38for six thousand, nine hundred twenty dollars. Needing to rent
- 9:43a car to get from a Florida airport to the
- 9:46nearby home of his daughter, Colin, Fultz decided to try
- 9:50out an electric vehicle for the first time. That decision
- 9:53turned into a nightmare when he returned to his home
- 9:56in Letcher County. After returning the Tesla to budget car
- 10:00rental at Saint Pete Clearwater International Airport this past Saturday,
- 10:05Fults and his wife flew from there to Lexington and
- 10:08drove back to eastern Kentucky to enjoy what they thought
- 10:11would be a quiet Saturday night, But then fALS decided
- 10:15to check his email. While looking to see if he
- 10:19needed to respond to any messages, he opened an email
- 10:22from Budget to find out his credit card had been
- 10:25charged an extra seven thousand, two hundred seven dollars and
- 10:29fifty cents before a six hundred forty two dollars and
- 10:32fifty five cent discount for nine thousand, six hundred ten miles.
- 10:37He didn't drive, and couldn't have if he'd wanted to
- 10:40during the six days he had the ev at his disposal.
- 10:44There is no way for me to have driven that
- 10:46Tesla that many miles, Fulks said, I told her a
- 10:50Budget representative, I would have had to drive from Clearwater
- 10:54to California, and from California back to Clearwater and to
- 10:57California again. Could have made two round trips from Clearwater
- 11:02to Los Angeles if the four hundred fifty miles he'd
- 11:05already paid for were added in. The distance between Clearwater
- 11:09and Los Angeles is two thousand, five hundred thirteen miles
- 11:13from Clearwater, and it takes the average driver thirty six
- 11:16hours and forty eight minutes to make that one way trip.
- 11:20That means Fults would have had to drive NonStop for
- 11:23more than six days without stopping to charge the tesla.
- 11:27Fults said the longest distance he drove the tesla was
- 11:30the one hundred fifty two mile round trip from clear
- 11:34Water to his daughter's home in Venice. When Fults contacted
- 11:38the Budget representative, she said the large discrepancy in the
- 11:41charge for mileage would have to be handled by someone
- 11:44else in the corporation. As of press time Tuesday, Fults
- 11:48had not heard anything back from Budget via email or telephone.
- 11:54Falts said he's going to tell people how important it
- 11:56is these days to check their receipts and credit card bills.
- 12:00He said it could have been several days before he
- 12:02noticed it if he hadn't decided to check his computer
- 12:06and saw the new email from Budget. The next story
- 12:11is drug dealer Andra Smith gets over twelve year federal
- 12:16prison term. Electric Counting woman who was a major supplier
- 12:22of the illegal drugs methamphetamine and Fentanhill between Louisville and
- 12:26the state of Virginia, has been sentenced to serve more
- 12:29than twelve years in federal prison. Federal prosecutors say Andra
- 12:35Lee Smith, sixty two of Bottom Fork, a community located
- 12:40between may King and Kona, conspired with others to traffic
- 12:43over twenty kilograms or nearly forty five pounds of metham
- 12:47fetemine and fentanyl in the state of Virginia alone. The sentencing,
- 12:52handed down in U S District Court in Abington, Virginia,
- 12:56comes after she entered a plea of guilty to conspiracy
- 12:59to distribute and possessed with the intent to distribute five
- 13:02hundred grams seventeen point six ounces or more of metham
- 13:06fedemine and one count of distribution of fifty grams one
- 13:10point seven six ounces or more of metham fetomine. She
- 13:14was sentenced to one hundred forty five months in federal prison.
- 13:19The Federal Bureau of Prison's website says Smith has been
- 13:22assigned inmate number three two five two zero five one one,
- 13:27but is not yet in federal custody. In this case
- 13:32that led to the sentencing, Smith conspired with nine others,
- 13:35including Eric Coffee forty nine of Lexington, North Carolina, and
- 13:39Virginia residence, Daniel Hafmeister forty two of Roanoke, and pound
- 13:44residents Michael Hicks thirty six, Cody Allen Rose thirty five,
- 13:48and Ashley Beverly Junior fifty one to distribute large amounts
- 13:52of Metham fetterman and fentanviylle in southwest Virginia. Most of
- 13:58Smith's distributions to drug dealers in Virginia took place at
- 14:02her home on Kentucky three four six, where she kept
- 14:05multiple pounds of metham fetamine and fentanhill and distributed ounce
- 14:10plus quantities at a time to her customers. Smith also
- 14:14delivered drugs to Virginia and routinely traveled to Louisville to
- 14:18obtain quantities of xylosine and fentanhyl black for distribution. Smith
- 14:24is the partner of Robert Daniel Danny Bob Collins, who
- 14:28pleaded guilty to possessing nearly four pounds of metham fettermine
- 14:32at the couple's Bottom Fork home. Collins worked as in
- 14:35February twenty nineteen, nearly a year after the Letcher County
- 14:39Sheriff's Department raided the house and premises. She was a
- 14:43teacher at Norton Elementary School and John I. Burton High
- 14:47School in Norton, Virginia for fifteen years before committing the
- 14:51crimes for which she was sentenced late in July. In
- 14:56February twenty twenty one, began investigating Smith after the the
- 15:00body of an ex husband, Ricky L. Crawford, sixty one
- 15:03of pound, was found lying in the front yard of
- 15:07the home at Bottom Fork. Crawford was known by authorities
- 15:11to have previously trafficked in methamphetamine. The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco,
- 15:17Firearms and Explosives atf Southwest Drug Task Force, Kentucky State Police,
- 15:23and Wise County Sheriff's Office investigated the case, which led
- 15:27to the recent sentencing of Andorra Smith. Assistant US Attorney
- 15:32Lena Busher prosecuted the case for the United States. In
- 15:37the next headline myth charges dominate Grand jury action. Thirteen
- 15:44people have been indicted in Lenter Circuit Court. They are
- 15:48Cody Tucker thirty two, seventeen Loves branch Weisberg, who is
- 15:53charged with first degree criminal abuse child under twelve. Kentucky

- 20:29Lectro Circuit Court. Deputy Clerk Sandra Wright testified in the case.
- 20:35The next story is Gabby's Fishing Fever by Greg Gabby Caudle.
- 20:41Croppy go deep in the summer heat. Some fish prefer
- 20:47the cooler water over the hot summer temperatures. Fish such
- 20:50as trout, smallmouth bass, and croppie are more active and
- 20:54catchable in cooler water conditions. Now, while the surface temperatures
- 20:59at most area lakes are in the eighty five to
- 21:02ninety degree range, that will move these fish to the
- 21:05cooler areas. The most common areas for summertime croppy to
- 21:09move is deeper water. At this time of year, the
- 21:12deeper you go down in the water, the cooler it
- 21:14will get. Water lies in layers controlled by temperatures, just
- 21:19like the air is for us. The cooler water also
- 21:23has more dissolved oxygen levels, which make it more suitable
- 21:26for bait fish and croppy. The fish or less stressed
- 21:29and will be more active. I love to night fish
- 21:33for croppy in summer with minnows and small jigs and
- 21:36tube baits. My favorite cover is wood, like a big
- 21:40fallen tree or stumps, or my best steak beds. I
- 21:45will fish under a black light or a lantern, usually
- 21:47around eight feet deep. I like to use a small
- 21:50floater to keep the bait a certain depth and to
- 21:53detect strikes. I have fish this way for years and
- 21:56always love it. I think this time of year the
- 21:59best croppy fishing is going to be deeper on cover
- 22:02of some type. Also look for areas where fresh water
- 22:05comes into the lake. These type areas are rich with
- 22:09oxygen and nutrients. Some new food may also come in.
- 22:13These areas can be a very good place to fish
- 22:16for summer cropping. The current in the moving water will
- 22:19be cooler and more oxygen rich. If you find this
- 22:22type of area, look for cover to make it even better.
- 22:26God bless you all be safe this summer and good fishing.
- 22:31And The next article by Greg Gabby Caudal is productive
- 22:35lures for deeper water. As we talked about last week,
- 22:40these dog days of summer can get very hot, with
- 22:42the temperatures in the nineties almost every day. This will
- 22:46heat the shallow and surface areas of lakes to eighty
- 22:49five degrees or higher. When this happens, bass, croppie and
- 22:52many other fish move to deeper cooler water. However, deeper
- 22:57water can be a few feet or several feet on
- 23:00some lakes. A lot of the times it is based
- 23:03on the type of cover or structure you are fishing.
- 23:06A shallow, flat bank will require fish to move out
- 23:09to the first primary drop off to find cooler water,
- 23:13but bass holding on a steep dropping bank or a
- 23:16point with a drop off close by will only need
- 23:19to move down the cover to find cooler water. By
- 23:22knowing this, there are lures that work well in each
- 23:25situation for the bass holding on the shallow water area. Edges,
- 23:30plastic worms and jigs worked slowly as close as possible
- 23:33to the drop off area is good. You can also
- 23:37use a shallow running crankbait or slow rolled spinner bait
- 23:41cast upon the shallow water and work it back into
- 23:44the deeper water to draw Lipless. Crank baits work very
- 23:48well for this and I have done well with them.
- 23:52If you're fishing the deeper water cover several baits work well.
- 23:56My go to bait is a worm or jig. They
- 23:59always work for me. Also, a tube bait or grub
- 24:03rigged on a jighead is good. A Carolina rig is
- 24:06great for deep water. So if you're out this summer,
- 24:10use these tips to improve your fishing action. The next
- 24:16headline is not County records its second ATV fatality in
- 24:21a week. Another off road vehicle accident has claimed a
- 24:26life in not County. Kentucky. State Police Post thirteen in
- 24:31Hazard received a nine to one one call about two
- 24:34fifty one pm Saturday, August second, reporting a single vehicle
- 24:38utility terrain vehicle UTV collision on starfire Hall Road in
- 24:44the Taalcom community of Not County, Kentucky. State Police, troopers
- 24:49and emergency medical personnel responded to the scene. Preliminary investigation
- 24:54indicates that Michael Miller, forty three years old, a vest
- 24:58was operating a UTV when he lost control of the vehicle,
- 25:02causing it to overturn. Mister Miller was ejected during the
- 25:06incident and sustained fatal injuries. He was pronounced dead at
- 25:10the scene by the Knot County Coroner's Office. An autopsy
- 25:14has been scheduled and toxicology results are penning him. Investigators
- 25:19determined that neither a seat belt nor a helmet was
- 25:21in use at the time of the crash. Trooper Kyle
- 25:25Ambergy is in charge of the investigation. The fatality is
- 25:29the second in the area in less than a week.
- 25:33An eleven year old boy was killed at Emmelina on
- 25:35July thirtieth when the ATV he was riding flipped multiple times.
- 25:41Kentucky State Police said he was riding at high speed
- 25:44on the surface mine at Sylvester Branch when the accident
- 25:47occurred about two twenty seven p m. He was also
- 25:50not wearing a helmet. Another Knot County in was killed
- 25:54about two forty nine p m. July twenty ninth in
- 25:57a riding lawnmower accident. Police said Thomas J. Johnson, sixty four,
- 26:03of Kite, lost control of his mower and ran over
- 26:06an embankment, where he was trapped under the mower and died.
- 26:11Those accidents follow another U t V accident that occurred
- 26:15about eleven fifty five p m. July twenty sixth near
- 26:18the Knot and Breathitt County line on the Old Star
- 26:21fire Mine site during the Knot County Trail ride. A
- 26:26man in the side by side was not seriously injured,
- 26:29but a woman was flown out for treatment. No other
- 26:32information was available, and the next story is four men
- 26:37are sentenced here. Four men have entered guilty pleas to
- 26:42charges in Lector Circuit Court. They are Travis Yeery forty
- 26:46four two seventy six Buster Road Millstone, who pleaded guilty
- 26:51to first degree trafficking in control substance two Graham's methamphetamine.
