- 0:06Speaker 1: Would you wake up at three o'clock in the morning
- 0:09Speaker 1: to take your kids to work? I'll Do Better Tomorrow
- 0:13Speaker 1: is what we talk about every Friday on the Happy
- 0:15Speaker 1: Families podcast. Is where we deconstruct the week that was,
- 0:18Speaker 1: look at what's working, look at what's not working.
- 0:21Speaker 2: And help you to be better parents.
- 0:23Speaker 1: Also today on the podcast, some people actually hate us.
- 0:27Speaker 1: I'm not overstating it. I'll tell you why in just
- 0:30Speaker 1: a sec. That's all coming up on the Happy Families podcast.
- 0:33Speaker 1: I'll Do Better Tomorrow edition for Friday August the first
- 0:38Speaker 1: stay with us. Hello and welcome to the Happy Famili's podcast,
- 0:43Speaker 1: Real Parenting Solutions every Day. This is Australia's most downloaded
- 0:46Speaker 1: parenting podcast. Kylie, I've got in my run sheet that
- 0:50Speaker 1: we should start this podcast with some banter.
- 0:53Speaker 2: Would you like to banter with me?
- 0:54Speaker 3: I want to know who hates us?
- 0:55Speaker 2: Oh, that's coming up. I haven't filled you in on
- 0:57Speaker 2: anything at all. No, you're sitting there.
- 1:01Speaker 1: With a rug around you and look like you're really struggling.
- 1:05Speaker 1: It's winter, it's brazy, yeah, and you look like you're
- 1:08Speaker 1: under the weather.
- 1:09Speaker 2: Can we find out why.
- 1:12Speaker 3: I thought that three am starts were done and dusted
- 1:15Speaker 3: when our kids ended up sleeping through the night.
- 1:19Speaker 2: Yes, yes, yeah.
- 1:22Speaker 1: So when you put your children into a school that
- 1:24Speaker 1: does a whole lot of industry placement and your daughter
- 1:26Speaker 1: wants to be involved with horses and the.
- 1:29Speaker 3: I just want to understand who decided that the horses
- 1:31Speaker 3: needed to wake up at three o'clock in the morning
- 1:34Speaker 3: so that their stables can be scooped out and they
- 1:37Speaker 3: can go for their morning job.
- 1:39Speaker 2: Like honestly, cart horses run at nine am.
- 1:42Speaker 3: Oh obviously not.
- 1:45Speaker 2: So let's just.
- 1:46Speaker 1: Explain your older better tomorrow with a little bit more detail.
- 1:49Speaker 1: Industry placement. Our year ten daughter, she's at the local racetrack,
- 1:52Speaker 1: and that means.
- 1:53Speaker 3: That means that she is waking up at two point
- 1:56Speaker 3: thirty in the morning to get herself ready and out
- 1:59Speaker 3: the door for a clock departure so that we can
- 2:02Speaker 3: arrive at the stables for a three point thirty start.
- 2:06Speaker 3: Can I just say I am absolutely blown away with
- 2:10Speaker 3: this kid. I wish she had her license. I oh, yeah,
- 2:14Speaker 3: I wish.
- 2:15Speaker 1: I wish you'd get out of bed at any reasonable
- 2:18Speaker 1: like even before seven o'clock for anything else but horses.
- 2:21Speaker 3: But it blows my mind at her commitment and the
- 2:25Speaker 3: joy that she has out of mucking out stables.
- 2:29Speaker 2: Yeah, like literally five hours a day.
- 2:31Speaker 3: She is living her best life.
- 2:34Speaker 1: Just shoveling horse done. Now, in fairness, you sound like
- 2:40Speaker 1: you are under the weather. I sound like I'm doing fine.
- 2:42Speaker 1: I have gotten up and done the drive myself at
- 2:45Speaker 1: three o'clock. But most mornings this week, even though we've
- 2:47Speaker 1: both been awake, you have very kindly and gently put
- 2:52Speaker 1: your arm on mind and said you go back to sleep.
- 2:54Speaker 1: I'm awake anyway because you've had a bit of a
- 2:56Speaker 1: fluy coffee thing and you've been awake. So you've done
- 2:59Speaker 1: a lot more of this than me. Does that make
- 3:05Speaker 1: me say I think that you should claim it? I
- 3:08Speaker 1: think that you should so you're older better tomorrow. Is
- 3:11Speaker 1: there a take home message here other than as a
- 3:12Speaker 1: parent you just constantly do stuff.
- 3:15Speaker 3: Get your kids involved with awesome.
- 3:16Speaker 2: That's my take home message.
- 3:18Speaker 3: Just don't do.
- 3:19Speaker 2: It very good. Okay, Well, after the break I've got, I've.
- 3:22Speaker 1: Got a whole lot of housekeeping, a whole lot of feedback,
- 3:24Speaker 1: a whole lot of things that we just need to
- 3:26Speaker 1: run through. And I know, based on the feedback that
- 3:29Speaker 1: I'm going to share with you, some people are going
- 3:30Speaker 1: to hate it, but I think most people are going
- 3:32Speaker 1: to like it.
- 3:32Speaker 2: And we've just got to talk about it.
- 3:34Speaker 1: So that's coming up next.
- 3:42Speaker 2: Okay, Kylie, I'm struggling a little bit. I'm having withdrawals.
- 3:46Speaker 2: Do you know why you wanted more episodes? Didn't you
- 3:50Speaker 2: more episodes? What do you mean episodes?
- 3:52Speaker 3: Parental guidance? Oh no, it's too quick.
- 3:55Speaker 2: You know what I should say yes to that? I
- 3:57Speaker 2: really should.
- 3:58Speaker 1: The answer is yes, I did. But no, that's not
- 3:59Speaker 1: what I'm having withdraws from. It's something else on Telly.
- 4:02Speaker 3: Oh, here we go, the Tour de France.
- 4:04Speaker 1: Yep, it's over finished on Sunday night, Monday morning.
- 4:08Speaker 2: Oh my goodness.
- 4:09Speaker 1: I mean, it's so bad for our well being, it's
- 4:11Speaker 1: so bad for sleep, it's so bad for everything.
- 4:12Speaker 2: But for the last few weeks, I've just been in
- 4:14Speaker 2: heaven watching the Titter France. I'm having withdraws. Anyway, that's
- 4:17Speaker 2: not what we're really talking about.
- 4:18Speaker 1: I just figure it's my podcast and I can say
- 4:20Speaker 1: stuff like that every now and again and get away
- 4:21Speaker 1: with it. Here's what I do want to mention before
- 4:24Speaker 1: we get to my old about it tomorrow. First off,
- 4:27Speaker 1: last week I was in Perth. And then on Friday,
- 4:29Speaker 1: I was in Sydney and I needed some breakfast before
- 4:33Speaker 1: I got to MacArthur Anglican School, who had asked me
- 4:35Speaker 1: to do some teaching development on their staff development day.
- 4:38Speaker 1: So I've left the Sydney Airport hotel and I've driven
- 4:42Speaker 1: out to.
- 4:42Speaker 2: MacArthur, which is about an hour away.
- 4:44Speaker 1: I need food because I'm going to be presenting all morning,
- 4:47Speaker 1: and I stop off at MacArthur Square.
- 4:50Speaker 2: The Google Google Maps said that there was a cafe.
- 4:53Speaker 1: In there that I was going to be able to
- 4:54Speaker 1: get a good breaky at, and there's not a lot
- 4:57Speaker 1: around the Camptown area, so I just figured that'll do.
- 4:59Speaker 1: What I didn't I know, Kylie, is that MacArthur Square
- 5:01Speaker 1: is as big as a suburb. It takes up, it
- 5:03Speaker 1: has its own postcode. It's so big, and I parked
- 5:05Speaker 1: at the wrong end, so I had limited time to
- 5:08Speaker 1: go and find breakfast. I'm wandering around using Google Maps
- 5:11Speaker 1: inside the shopping center, which never works, especially when there'
- 5:13Speaker 1: multiple levels and you've just got no idea where you are.
- 5:16Speaker 1: And I'm on the escalator and a lady turns around,
- 5:19Speaker 1: looks at me and says, you're justin and I said, yeah,
- 5:24Speaker 1: do we know each other? And then she said no,
- 5:26Speaker 1: I've been watching parental Guidance. I just love it when
- 5:28Speaker 1: that happens. People are brave enough to say hello. Anyway,
- 5:31Speaker 1: Tomorrow was kind enough to guide me to the cafe
- 5:33Speaker 1: that I couldn't find, which was about a killermeter from
- 5:35Speaker 1: where we were. Like, are you sure you've got time
- 5:37Speaker 1: to walk with me? She's like, yes, we'll do the walk.
- 5:39Speaker 1: We get to the cafe, I'm sitting down and Har
- 5:43Speaker 1: Logic and her friend, who was visiting from Ipswich to MacArthur.
- 5:47Speaker 1: Har's child actually goes to MacArthur Anglican. They're sitting there
- 5:51Speaker 1: having breakfast. Halh sees me. I don't know Har, but
- 5:53Speaker 1: she's a speech pathologist who recognizes me from the TV
- 5:56Speaker 1: show and they come over and have a long chat
- 5:57Speaker 1: with me while I'm trying to eat my poached eggs,
- 5:59Speaker 1: a scrambled eggs or whatever it was.
- 6:00Speaker 2: It was just wonderful. I just thought how nice that
- 6:03Speaker 2: was to have that experience.
- 6:05Speaker 3: Well, I'm guessing your breakfast took a little bit longer
- 6:08Speaker 3: than you had anticipated.
- 6:09Speaker 1: I am a superstar, that's what it is. I've been
- 6:12Speaker 1: on national television for three series now, and people are
- 6:15Speaker 1: recognizing It's fine when I'm in a good mood. But
- 6:17Speaker 1: if I'm with the kids, or I've got a scowl
- 6:19Speaker 1: on my face, if I'm going through airport security and
- 6:22Speaker 1: I've got to be frisked because that body image scan
- 6:24Speaker 1: have found a little bit too much on my belly
- 6:27Speaker 1: and I've got that scowl on my face, never goes well,
- 6:30Speaker 1: what else is happening?
- 6:31Speaker 2: Miranda got in touch with us and said that because
- 6:33Speaker 2: she heard us talking.
- 6:34Speaker 1: About, or heard me talking about having a tough talk,
- 6:37Speaker 1: a tricky conversation every Sunday with the kids, she started
- 6:40Speaker 1: doing it with her.
- 6:41Speaker 2: Kids and said, oh my goodness, this works. This is incredible.
- 6:46Speaker 3: You mean you've got some good stuff to say.
- 6:47Speaker 1: I've got good stuff to say. That's why I've got
- 6:49Speaker 1: a TV show. I'm so sad it's over now. You've
- 6:51Speaker 1: got me feeling with drawers and just on that while
- 6:54Speaker 1: while we're sort of blowing, I'm blowing my own trumpet
- 6:56Speaker 1: about the TV show. I do want to play this
- 6:58Speaker 1: feedback that came through the super simple system at Happy
- 7:02Speaker 1: Families dot com dot you.
- 7:04Speaker 4: Hello, justin. My name is Ahmad. I just wanted to
- 7:09Speaker 4: record a message and say thank you. I'm currently watching
- 7:12Speaker 4: Parental Guidance and I've really appreciated your level headedness and
- 7:17Speaker 4: approach to having these very open and honest conversations. I
- 7:22Speaker 4: really really appreciate it, and thank you for your time
- 7:25Speaker 4: and the work that you've done.
- 7:27Speaker 3: That's pretty awesome.
- 7:28Speaker 2: Level headed, level headed.
- 7:30Speaker 3: He hasn't seen you when you're not clearly.
- 7:32Speaker 2: Not very often do I get called level headed.
- 7:35Speaker 3: What I love about the show I keep coming back
- 7:37Speaker 3: to it is it provides us with an opportunity to
- 7:40Speaker 3: have really important conversations that sometimes we just we don't
- 7:45Speaker 3: even know where to start, let alone how to go
- 7:48Speaker 3: about it. And Ahmad's acknowledgement that you bring a clarity
- 7:53Speaker 3: to the conversation that otherwise wouldn't be there is profound.
- 7:57Speaker 1: So so far, a lot of feedback, a lot of converse.
- 8:00Speaker 1: I'm going to share a little bit more now. By
- 8:02Speaker 1: the way, for those of you who do want to
- 8:03Speaker 1: leave a review, don't leave it about this podcast unless
- 8:06Speaker 1: you think it was absolutely brilliant. We hardly ever talk
- 8:08Speaker 1: about feedback on the pod. I've decided that that's what
- 8:10Speaker 1: we're going to cover off today because it's nice to
- 8:12Speaker 1: keep you across what's going on, Kylie got this email.
- 8:15Speaker 1: This email came through from Georgina. This was about a
- 8:18Speaker 1: pod that we did just about a week ago. Georgina said, Kylie,
- 8:23Speaker 1: she didn't email me. She emailed you and said, and
- 8:26Speaker 1: you haven't seen this one yet because it came through
- 8:28Speaker 1: to the office and the office staff looked after it.
- 8:30Speaker 1: You can email us podcasts at happy families dot com
- 8:32Speaker 1: dot you. I'll have to let Sarah in the office
- 8:34Speaker 1: know that she needs to include you in these ones,
- 8:36Speaker 1: but I wanted to keep this one a secret. Georgina said, Kylie.
- 8:38Speaker 1: Thank you for sharing your experience today about not trusting
- 8:41Speaker 1: your voice at forty five. This is a major light
- 8:44Speaker 1: bulb moment for me and when I'm striving not to
- 8:47Speaker 1: repeat with my son and daughter. Thanks for sharing your experience.
- 8:51Speaker 1: I'd never have connected the suppression of my voice as
- 8:54Speaker 1: a child to not trusting my voice as an adult.
- 8:58Speaker 1: Thanks for the daily insights for mind as an inspiration, Kylie.
- 9:02Speaker 3: That's awesome.
- 9:03Speaker 2: So I'm changing.
- 9:04Speaker 1: Lives with parental guidance and having wanders through shopping centers
- 9:08Speaker 1: with random strangers. You are changing lives because you're opening
- 9:11Speaker 1: up and talking about things that didn't go so well
- 9:14Speaker 1: when you were a kid, and I just think that's valuable.
- 9:17Speaker 1: I think it's worth sharing and highlighting because based on
- 9:20Speaker 1: what I'm about to share with you, it's nice to
- 9:22Speaker 1: get some positive feedback. Oh yeah, okay, so it's been
- 9:25Speaker 1: a long time since I've jumped into the ratings and
- 9:28Speaker 1: reviews at Apple Podcasts, but we got one from Squirtal
- 9:32Speaker 1: underscore Mon, who gave us a one star review out. Yeah,
- 9:35Speaker 1: I haven't had a one star for a while. Okay,
- 9:38Speaker 1: first things first, says squirtal underscore Mon, I would rate
- 9:42Speaker 1: this one star. The show is basically just two white, straight,
- 9:46Speaker 1: cisgender adults in their fifties speaking gibberish into their microphones.
- 9:51Speaker 1: So a couple of things here. We can't help the
- 9:53Speaker 1: color of our skin. Nobody can. And yes, we are
- 9:56Speaker 1: two white adults. We're also straight. We make no apologies
- 10:01Speaker 1: for that. We are out here representing what ideal families
- 10:06Speaker 1: can look like. And this person really doesn't like that
- 10:09Speaker 1: we're two white adults. Oh and we're sis gender because
- 10:12Speaker 1: I am definitely a manly man and you are definitely
- 10:13Speaker 1: a womanly woman.
- 10:15Speaker 2: So I got it wrong.
- 10:16Speaker 1: Though, we're not in our fifties. I turn fifty this year.
- 10:19Speaker 1: You are still a few years off. So as for
- 10:21Speaker 1: speaking gibberish, I don't know. Maybe this whole podcast has
- 10:24Speaker 1: been it. But I love sharing this stuff because I mean,
- 10:27Speaker 1: we love that people leave us feedback. Secondly, says squirt
- 10:30Speaker 1: Underscore one. I listened to their episode on furries just
- 10:34Speaker 1: in case I ever run into one, and from what
- 10:35Speaker 1: I heard, what they said is fake. These people are
- 10:38Speaker 1: just saying random stuff to get listeners. Also, these people
- 10:41Speaker 1: say nothing about the LGBTQ IAP plus community. Anyway, My
- 10:45Speaker 1: point is that this podcast is just bad quality, so
- 10:48Speaker 1: listen to something an ethical human may.
- 10:55Speaker 3: I don't actually know what to say to that.
- 10:57Speaker 1: I don't mind that squirrel on on isn't listening because
- 10:59Speaker 1: we will never make Squirtle non happy, so not a problem.
- 11:04Speaker 1: Also got a two star review, got a two star
- 11:06Speaker 1: review from fifteen nickname maybe four love this pod and
- 11:09Speaker 1: listen to it every week. I mean, that's sounding like
- 11:12Speaker 1: a five star review so far. And then something that
- 11:14Speaker 1: is outside of our control a little bit. However, I
- 11:18Speaker 1: was appalled to hear advertisements for New South Wales col
- 11:20Speaker 1: Lobby while listening in the last week given the well
- 11:22Speaker 1: established link between climate change and poor mental health outcomes
- 11:25Speaker 1: for children and young people, what next gambling advertisements? So
- 11:28Speaker 1: fifteen nick name eighty four. If you're still listening, we
- 11:30Speaker 1: really hope you are. We'd love for you to change
- 11:32Speaker 1: to a five star. Firstly, and secondly, from a research
- 11:35Speaker 1: point of view, you've highlighted that there is a well
- 11:37Speaker 1: established link between climate change and poor mental health outcomes
- 11:39Speaker 1: for children and young people. That evidence doesn't exist. I've
- 11:42Speaker 1: searched for it.
- 11:42Speaker 2: I've looked for it.
- 11:43Speaker 1: I've spoken to psychologists regularly. Not one of them has
- 11:46Speaker 1: ever told me that people are showing up in their
- 11:47Speaker 1: office saying I'm having anxiety attacks because of the climate
- 11:50Speaker 1: change crisis that we're experiencing. I understand that concerns about
- 11:55Speaker 1: the environment are real and significant, and certainly we do
- 12:00Speaker 1: need to acknowledge that, but there is at this point
- 12:03Speaker 1: no credible research that shows that it's associated with poorer
- 12:08Speaker 1: mental health. There is research that shows that kids are
- 12:10Speaker 1: worried about it, but not to the detriment of their
- 12:14Speaker 1: mental health. They're usually worried about the fight that they
- 12:17Speaker 1: had with their friend or the fact that their mum's
- 12:19Speaker 1: got poor mental health. Or that there was a cancer
- 12:22Speaker 1: diagnosis with their grandma or grandpa recently, or that their
- 12:24Speaker 1: dog is dying. They worry about that sort of stuff. Oh,
- 12:27Speaker 1: very sad, very sad. But I just want to share
- 12:29Speaker 1: those with you, Honey. We've got a couple of We
- 12:31Speaker 1: got a one star and a two star review.
- 12:34Speaker 3: Okay, all right, can you leave? I think I can
- 12:36Speaker 3: live with that.
- 12:37Speaker 2: Okay.
- 12:38Speaker 1: The good news is we also from Nick Nick Oz
- 12:40Speaker 1: got a five star review. I'm just going to read
- 12:42Speaker 1: it because it made me feel happy. Thanks Doctor Justin
- 12:44Speaker 1: and Kylie for the daily inspo and practical tips to
- 12:46Speaker 1: be a better parent. Thanks for all you do to
- 12:47Speaker 1: she knowledge.
- 12:48Speaker 2: With the world. And TBK.
- 12:50Speaker 1: Wills said, I love listening to your podcasts, such beautiful insights.
- 12:56Speaker 2: Thank you.
- 12:56Speaker 1: Your podcast is an absolutely wonderful way to start my day.
- 13:01Speaker 1: And the last one from kay Y read or Read,
- 13:06Speaker 1: who said, I recently met doctor Justin to talk with
- 13:08Speaker 1: my at my kids schooled. The information was absolutely life
- 13:10Speaker 1: changing and so grateful to have been present. Excited to
- 13:13Speaker 1: get stuck in his books and podcasts. From Kylie, So,
- 13:16Speaker 1: Kylie a bit of a mixed bag, but I wanted
- 13:19Speaker 1: to pass on all the feedback, because that's that's how
- 13:23Speaker 1: I'd do bit it tomorrow today.
- 13:24Speaker 3: I remember listening to a podcast once and they talked
- 13:26Speaker 3: about the fact that, you know, it takes all different
- 13:30Speaker 3: kinds of people to make the world go round. And
- 13:32Speaker 3: she talked about the fact that she loves oranges and
- 13:36Speaker 3: her partner doesn't, but does that make the orange any
- 13:39Speaker 3: less worth because he doesn't like it, he has an
- 13:43Speaker 3: opinion about it, And I just it really helped me
- 13:47Speaker 3: kind of, I guess, wrap my head around the fact
- 13:49Speaker 3: that we're not going to be everybody's favorite people. We're
- 13:53Speaker 3: not going to be everybody's favorite fruit, everybody's flavor, and
- 13:57Speaker 3: that's okay.
- 13:58Speaker 1: These two white cisgendered straight, mid mid fifties gibberish talkers.
- 14:03Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, there it is.
- 14:06Speaker 3: You stop talking gibberish.
- 14:07Speaker 2: Okay, all right, so just stop.
- 14:09Speaker 1: I haven't done my old I haven't done my older
- 14:10Speaker 1: better tomorrow yet, What have you got for me?
- 14:13Speaker 4: No?
- 14:13Speaker 1: Nothing, We're out of time. I really just wanted to
- 14:16Speaker 1: do the banter. I wanted to tell you about Ahmed's message.
- 14:19Speaker 1: I wanted to tell you about Georgina's message. I wanted
- 14:21Speaker 1: to tell you about my walk through MacArthur Square and
- 14:23Speaker 1: bumping into people and how great the TV shows being
- 14:25Speaker 1: and how much missed the Tour de France. And I
- 14:27Speaker 1: wanted to share those reviews because we love it when
- 14:29Speaker 1: people leave reviews, whether they're one star or five star,
- 14:32Speaker 1: and we would encourage you to do that. And if
- 14:35Speaker 1: you like the pod, we'd love for you to share
- 14:36Speaker 1: it with your friends because we think that it'll make
- 14:38Speaker 1: your family happier. What I think really needs to happen
- 14:41Speaker 1: missus Happy Families, is you need to go back to
- 14:42Speaker 1: bed and get some sleep after these three am starts
- 14:45Speaker 1: this week.
- 14:46Speaker 3: Now you're talking my language.
