- 0:17To love letters. through Welcome to Love Letters
- 1:04from God. We're going to be reading today
- 1:08from the book of Ecclesiastes we've been talking about, then
- 1:13reading about Solomon's life in recent programs.
- 1:18And this particular program we're going to be reading
- 1:22exclusively from the book of Ecclesiastes.
- 1:27Solomon wrote Ecclesiastes toward the end of his life.
- 1:32He had been given wisdom by God and he misused that wisdom.
- 1:40And in the process of misusing it, that's where the book of
- 1:45Ecclesiastes came into play. And he mentions, he mentions
- 1:53some things that he learned along the way.
- 1:57And that's what we're going to be reading about today.
- 2:01So it turned to me in the book of Ecclesiastes to chapter 6.
- 2:08We're going to read chapters 6 and 7:00 and 8:00 today.
- 2:16There is an evil which I have seen under the sun, and it is
- 2:23common among men, a man to whom God has given riches and wealth
- 2:31and honor, so that he lacks nothing for himself of all he
- 2:36desires, yet God does not give him power to eat of it, but a
- 2:42foreigner consumes it. This is vanity, and it is an
- 2:49evil affliction. If a man begets 100 children and
- 2:56lives many years, so that the days of his years are many, but
- 3:03his soul is not satisfied with goodness, or indeed he has no
- 3:09burial. I say that a stillborn child is
- 3:13better than he is, for it comes in vanity and departs in
- 3:19darkness, and its name is covered with darkness, though it
- 3:24has not seen the sun or known anything.
- 3:30This has more rest than that man, even if he lives 1000 years
- 3:35twice, but he has not seen Goodness Do not all go to one
- 3:41place. All the labor of man is for his
- 3:46mouth, and yet the soul is not satisfied.
- 3:53For what more has the wise man than the fool?
- 3:59What does the poor man have who knows how to walk before the
- 4:03living? Better is the sight of the eyes
- 4:08than the wandering of desire. This is also vanity and grasping
- 4:15for the wind. Whatever one is, he's been named
- 4:19already, for it's known that he is man, and he cannot contend
- 4:24with him who is mightier than he.
- 4:27Since there are many things that increase vanity, how is man any
- 4:31better? For who knows what is good for
- 4:36man in life? All the days of his vain life,
- 4:41which he passes like a shadow, who can tell a man what will
- 4:46happen after him under the sun? Notice what Solomon's talking
- 4:51about. There is his own life.
- 4:54You know, you go through life if you accumulate all kinds of
- 5:00money, all kinds of goods and so on, and yet at the end of the
- 5:05life, that's, that isn't going to do you any good at all.
- 5:09You know, the poor man who goes through life without anything,
- 5:15when he reaches the end of his life receives the same thing as
- 5:20a as a rich man. Neither one of them are are any
- 5:26better than the other. So let's read Chapter 7.
- 5:32A good name is better than precious ointment and the day of
- 5:39death than the day of 1's birth. Better to go to the House of
- 5:45mourning, then go to the House of feasting, for that is the end
- 5:51of all men, and the living will take it to heart.
- 5:56Sorrow is better than laughter, for by a sad countenance the
- 6:03heart is better. The heart of the wise is in the
- 6:07House of mourning, but the heart of idols is in the House of
- 6:13mirth. It's better to hear the rebuke
- 6:17of the wise than for a man to hear the song of fools.
- 6:24For like the crackling of thorns under a pot, so is the laughter
- 6:29of the fool. This also is vanity.
- 6:34Surely suppression, oppression, destroys a man's reason, and a
- 6:41bribe debases the heart. The end of a thing is better
- 6:47than its beginning. The patient in spirit is better
- 6:52than the proud in spirit. Do not hasten in your spirit to
- 6:57be angry, for anger rests in the bosom of fools.
- 7:03Do not say why were the former days better than these, for you
- 7:08do not inquire wisely concerning this.
- 7:12Wisdom is good with an inheritance, and profitable to
- 7:18those who see the sun. For wisdom is a defence, as
- 7:25money is a defence. But the excellence of knowledge
- 7:31is that wisdom gives life to those who have it.
- 7:36Consider the work of God, for who can make straight what he
- 7:42has made crooked? In the day of prosperity be
- 7:47joyful, but in the day of adversity be consider.
- 7:52Surely God has appointed the one as well as the other, so that
- 7:57man can find out nothing that will come after him.
- 8:03I have seen everything in my days of vanity.
- 8:08There is a just man who perishes in his righteousness, and there
- 8:14is a wicked man who prolongs life in his wickedness.
- 8:19Do not be overly righteous nor be overly wise.
- 8:24Why should you destroy yourself? Do not be overly wicked nor be
- 8:30foolish. Why should you die before your
- 8:34time? It is good that you grasp this
- 8:38and also not remove your hand from the other.
- 8:46Excuse me? For he he who fears God will
- 8:51escape them all. Wisdom strengthens the wise.
- 8:56More than 10 rulers of the city. For there's not a just man on
- 9:02earth who does good and does not sin.
- 9:06Also, do not take to heart everything that people say, lest
- 9:11you hear your servant cursing you for many times.
- 9:16Also your own heart is known that even you have cursed
- 9:19others. All this I have proved by
- 9:23wisdom. I said I will be wise, but it
- 9:29was far from me. As for that which is far off and
- 9:33exceedingly deep, who could find it out?
- 9:37I applied my heart to know, and to search, and to seek out
- 9:43wisdom and the reason of things, to know the wickedness of folly,
- 9:50even a foolishness and madness. And I find more bitter than
- 9:55death the woman whose heart is snares and Nets, whose hands are
- 10:01fetters. He who pleases God shall escape
- 10:06from her, but the Sinner shall be trapped by her.
- 10:11Here's what I found, says the preacher, adding one thing to
- 10:22the other to find out the reason which my stove still seeks.
- 10:29But I cannot find one man among 1000.
- 10:33I have found that a woman among all these I've not found truly
- 10:40this only I have found that God made man upright, but they have
- 10:44sought out many schemes. Again, notice Solomon is he's
- 10:51kind of mixed up, you know, there isn't anything that was
- 10:56out of his reach and he just isn't satisfied.
- 11:02He can't seem to find satisfaction in his own wisdom.
- 11:07Let's continue with chapter 8. Who is like a wise man who knows
- 11:15the interpretation of a thing. A man's wisdom make his face
- 11:19shine, and the sternness of his face is changed.
- 11:25I say keep the King's commandment for the sake of your
- 11:30oath to God. Do not be hasty to go from His
- 11:35presence. Do not take your stand for an
- 11:39evil thing. For He does whatever pleases
- 11:42him. For the word of a king is there
- 11:45is power. And who may say to him, What are
- 11:49you doing? He who keeps his command with
- 11:53experience nothing harmful. And a wise man's heart discerns
- 11:58both time and judgement, because for every matter there is a time
- 12:05and judgement, though the misery of man increases greatly, for he
- 12:12does not know what will happen, so who can tell him when it will
- 12:17occur? No one has the power over the
- 12:20Spirit to retain the Spirit. No one has the power in the day
- 12:25of death. There's no release from that.
- 12:29War and wickedness will not deliver those who are given to
- 12:34it. All of this I have seen and
- 12:39applied my heart to every work that he's done under the sun.
- 12:44There is a time in which one man rules over another to his own
- 12:49hurt. Then I saw the wicked hurled who
- 12:52had come and gone from the place of holiness, and they were
- 12:57forgotten in the city where they had so done.
- 13:01This also is manatee, because the sentence against an evil
- 13:05work is not executed speedily. Therefore the heart of the sons
- 13:11of men is fully said in them to do evil.
- 13:15Though a Sinner does evil 100 times, and his days are
- 13:19prolonged, yet I surely know that it will be well with those
- 13:24who fear God, who fear before Him, that I will not be well
- 13:29with the wicked, nor will he prolong his days which are as a
- 13:34shadow, because he does not fear before God.
- 13:39There is a vanity which occurs on earth, that there are just
- 13:44men to whom it happens according to the work of the wicked.
- 13:48Again, there are wicked men to whom it happens according to the
- 13:54word of the of the righteous. I said, this also is vanity, so
- 14:01I commended enjoyment, because a man has nothing better under the
- 14:06sun than to eat, to drink, to be merry.
- 14:11For this will remain with him and his labor all the days of
- 14:14his life, which God gives him under the sun.
- 14:18And when I applied my heart to no wisdom and to see the
- 14:23business that is done on earth, even though one sees no sleep
- 14:27day or night, then I saw all the work of God that a man cannot
- 14:33find out the work that is done under the sun.
- 14:37For though a man laborers to discover it, yet he will not
- 14:41find it. Moreover, there are a wise man
- 14:45attempts to know it, he will not be able to find it.
- 14:50And that reads chapter 8. Ecclesiastes is kind of a sad
- 14:57book, but it illustrates the fact that the wisest of men,
- 15:06with all of their knowledge, can't help themselves.
- 15:15Every single one of us needs God.
- 15:20It doesn't matter whether you're rich or whether you're poor.
- 15:26It doesn't matter how smart you are, we all need God.
- 15:31And in this love letter he's given us, this book of
- 15:35Ecclesiastes tells us that Solomon, this wise of the wisest
- 15:42of men, had to find that out in himself in his own life.
- 15:49We pray that you and I will find that out before our life is
- 15:54over. Shall we pray?
- 15:56Father in Heaven, we're so thankful that you give us the
- 16:01information we have. We pray that you'll help us to
- 16:07recognize that you're the real source of wisdom and that we
- 16:12will learn to read from that blessed love letter you've given
- 16:17us and find out more of what real wisdom is.
- 16:22And we pray this in Jesus name, Amen.
