Latest / The Lunch Rush with Trent Condon / Miami/Ole Miss thoughts, Iowa State battles back vs. Baylor, Bama Bob on the CFP & Hawkeye talk with David Eickholt
Transcript
- 0:09Hi, good afternoon. Welcome Miller and Condon on a
- 0:12want to say a football Thursday because this starts off just a
- 0:15glorious 5 days of football, but we'll wait for that tomorrow.
- 0:19Won't wait for football much longer. 7:00 tonight ball is in
- 0:22the air. We will get into that.
- 0:24Here's what's coming up on our program.
- 0:25Trent, Condon, Kendall or Miller and Condon with you until 2:00.
- 0:29Bama Bob will kick things off at 12:25.
- 0:32We will preview the game with Bama Bob that's coming up here
- 0:35in 25 minutes that after that David Icult.
- 0:39We never really had a chance to respond much.
- 0:41Just as we were going off the air, Keon Entreger entered the
- 0:45portal. It was very late in the show,
- 0:46was it not TC? It was and.
- 0:48And yesterday we had everything lined up and couldn't really
- 0:51pivot from that. So we'll do that today with
- 0:54David Icult. He will join us coming up here
- 0:57at 12:45. Of course, we'll do some hoops
- 0:59in there as well. At one O clock.
- 1:03We're going to talk to Dave Sinek and he covers the Packers
- 1:05and has for decades at the KFAN where he hosts Packer preview on
- 1:09Sunday mornings, a review if they play on Saturday, and he
- 1:12writes at zonecoverage.com. zonecoverage.com.
- 1:15So we've talked a lot of Bears Packers this week.
- 1:17We'll get a Packers perspective in here at 12:25 and then a
- 1:21football perspective at one O clock rather with Dave and then
- 1:24AT125A football perspective with Dalton Wasserman who covers
- 1:27football both college and the NFL for Pro Football Focus dot
- 1:31com. I'm guessing we'll go over
- 1:33majority of the games with Dalton before we get Mr. not Mr.
- 1:37Monday night, but trends plays of the day circus sports sponsor
- 1:40those our picks coming up today as well as we want to get
- 1:43tonight's game in there as we go head to head with the boys in
- 1:46the afternoon off the bench with Lucas and Sean.
- 1:50Iowa State wins on the road last night.
- 1:52Min Iowa Iowa State ladies lose on the road last night to
- 1:56Cincinnati quad four loss that that's not a good loss and we'll
- 1:59see what that one does in the grand scheme of things.
- 2:02But how are you today? I'm doing well.
- 2:04How about yourself? Good.
- 2:05Excited for tonight, excited for this football game.
- 2:08Now tonight we get Fowler and Herb St. and then I think
- 2:14tomorrow Do I have this right? Tomorrow, McDonough.
- 2:17Not positive, I hadn't looked at the assignments.
- 2:20I think so because I think because of the fact Indiana,
- 2:23Herb St. and Fowler had Indiana at the Rose Bowl, I think that
- 2:27they've switched that around. I believe we had Fowler and Herb
- 2:30St. tonight. Well, whoever we're going to
- 2:31watch regardless. Just calling the game that's
- 2:34coming up to you here tonight. Number really hasn't moved.
- 2:37It's about 3 for the most part. We shall see where it goes, but
- 2:42I can't wait. I can't wait.
- 2:44We're down to 3 college football games left in the year and I
- 2:48hope that the each and every one of them has us on the edge of
- 2:50our seat. Whoever we're rooting for or
- 2:53have a betting interest in, that's obviously the goal, is to
- 2:56have these things absolutely spine tingling.
- 2:59I'm all for it. Absolutely.
- 3:02When we look at the game tonight, I know we'll talk more
- 3:04with Bama Bob about the match up, but I've been just waiting
- 3:09for it all to kind of collapse with Ole Miss with these coaches
- 3:12going back and forth. But another component that I
- 3:15think is going to be perhaps important, the way they've been
- 3:18able to cobble this together. Well, game one we know is
- 3:20against Tulane, team that they already played, team they
- 3:23already game plan for, team they're also a lot better than
- 3:27and we saw that play out. We sure did.
- 3:29Then in the quarterfinals they get Georgia A-Team.
- 3:32They played a team that they've already game plan for, a team
- 3:35they've already matched up with and all the assistant coaches,
- 3:39everything that goes into it. It's not easy to play Georgia, I
- 3:43get that, but you knew what you were going to do.
- 3:46Right. For the most part, yeah.
- 3:47Because you saw them. This is going to be different.
- 3:51And now the portal is open. Portal wasn't open at that time.
- 3:54Portal is open now. And hearing about these
- 3:56assistant coaches that are flying from Baton Rouge and
- 3:58they're back to Oxford and back and forth and back and forth.
- 4:01And we do our day job with the kids in the practice during the
- 4:03day. And then at night we're
- 4:05recruiting. And I got to go to Baton Rouge
- 4:06because we got this kid coming to campus.
- 4:08I think it's going to be too much.
- 4:10I think tonight is going to show.
- 4:12So you're leading Miami? I'm not just leaning.
- 4:14I think they win this one pretty comfortable.
- 4:16I do too. Coupled with that defensive line
- 4:17who is absolutely tremendous elite.
- 4:22I don't like Carson Becker's, you know.
- 4:23No, you don't. I don't think it's going to
- 4:26matter though. I just think that not that it's
- 4:28all going to fall apart, but it's you're going to see some of
- 4:31those. The fractures are going to look
- 4:33real tonight and you're going to see there's one thing against
- 4:36Georgia, certainly against Tulane, but tonight reality is
- 4:39going to set it. I'm with you, and I'm kind of
- 4:42rooting for Ole Miss because of their story.
- 4:44And I like Chambliss and our buddy Troy, who listens to all
- 4:48of the shows on KX and O and the Iowa Sports Radio Network.
- 4:51We're grateful for that. And he sends us a bunch of stuff
- 4:54via Twitter and he sent a piece last night on Chamblisson's
- 4:56background and his upbringing in his fair state, etcetera.
- 5:00And it was really well done and I'm glad I watched it.
- 5:02We both LED Lacy fans. I mean, this guy is
- 5:04unbelievable. And getting him back as they've
- 5:07done has been a huge improvement.
- 5:09But Trent, for those reasons you just laid out and the defence of
- 5:13of Miami, I see this, I see this is somewhat of a low scoring
- 5:17football game. What is the total in this game?
- 5:19Is it in the 40s? I would I would be surprised if
- 5:22it's above 45. What if?
- 5:24What do they have it at? See 50.
- 5:26Two and. 1/2 I'm leaning under I.
- 5:29Think you're in the right spot? I'm on the, I would be on the
- 5:32under in this game because Miami slows down the game and they're
- 5:36going to want to do that again. And I, I lean Miami and there's,
- 5:41it opened at 2:00, there's there's threes in the market,
- 5:44there's a couple of 3 1/2's. I don't think it's going to fall
- 5:47to that 2 1/2, which I keep crossing my fingers and hope
- 5:49that it does, but nothing about the game just for our purposes
- 5:53here, head to head and then with the boys in the afternoon.
- 5:56But I'm on Miami as well. I'm on Miami.
- 5:58So we're going to have for the same play likely coming out.
- 6:00Here, I think so. I mean, I don't think anything's
- 6:02going to change my mind in the next hour and 50 minutes.
- 6:05I really don't. And then tomorrow with Indiana
- 6:07and Oregon, another rematch and it's just Indiana, you know that
- 6:15that can they really keep doing this at this level?
- 6:18They just continue, I guess Mark Cuban wrote a big check.
- 6:20Did you see that? Oh, that's.
- 6:22Happened two years ago, I happened again last year and
- 6:24then he did it again this year. They wrote another one and it's
- 6:26and it's paying. Off why is Indiana so good yeah,
- 6:29give a lot of credit to. Why is the SEC so bad?
- 6:31Because everybody's on. Everybody's running the same
- 6:33race. Oh, absolutely.
- 6:34You know I mean. That would That wasn't the case.
- 6:36There were those backroom handshakes.
- 6:37They weren't just a figment of imaginations or the bag outside
- 6:41the back store, the paper bag that was real.
- 6:44That was real. That was real.
- 6:45Then there's a reason that there were court cases with Alabama
- 6:47and Tennessee and and all these different places that you didn't
- 6:51see at the same level in the Big 12.
- 6:53In the Big 10, it was different. And now even playing field,
- 6:57you're seeing what's happening. Yeah, you have.
- 6:58Because Alabama and all the advantages they had with Nick
- 7:01Saban, who is a great coach, maybe the greatest coach we've
- 7:02ever seen, they also had other. Advantages.
- 7:04They had a pretty good booster alumni base in there.
- 7:08So yeah, I, I I don't know where I'm going yet.
- 7:12I don't know where I'm going as far as tomorrow.
- 7:14Yeah. Yeah, I watched Indiana,
- 7:18obviously just dismantle Alabama.
- 7:21Alabama sucked. That's it, right?
- 7:22That was a bad football team. I'm that should not have been in
- 7:25playoff. Team I'm well, I don't know
- 7:26about that. No, they should have.
- 7:27Been who you can put in Notre Dame.
- 7:29OK, then I'm I agree with you, but regardless, they were in and
- 7:33I agree with your part wholeheartedly that they're not
- 7:35a good football team. They came to the pocket and they
- 7:37and Tysons has been awful. Yes, and see he's going to the
- 7:40pros. He he declared for the NFL
- 7:42yesterday. Good luck.
- 7:43He can still declare. He can also still be in the
- 7:45portal. Well, that's true too.
- 7:47He. Could he might be getting his
- 7:48mail in South Beach Coral Gables?
- 7:50If that's what you're thinking, that's.
- 7:52What the buzz is out there that that is a potential destination
- 7:56for Tyson? Interesting.
- 7:57Get out of the SEC, don't have to worry about that kind of
- 8:00angle of it. You know, Miami, they'll be
- 8:02looking for a quarterback again and those one year rentals these
- 8:05last couple years worked out pretty well.
- 8:06No, they did. Interesting.
- 8:07Didn't see that aspect of it, but I did see declared for the
- 8:10NFLI. If I had to pick today and I'm
- 8:13not, I have a, I'm not going to use this as as our part of our
- 8:16picks because kind of lean Oregon.
- 8:20Yeah, that's kind of lean. Oregon.
- 8:21That's where I am too. And that 3 1/2 number, I like
- 8:24that part of it too. Now it's Dan Laning and they'll
- 8:26probably be two point conversions in there for no
- 8:27reason, things like that. But that aside, and I could just
- 8:31be dead wrong again, or maybe this is just me digging in my
- 8:34heels. The Indiana part of it, Oregon
- 8:36getting that second shot, though, just this is not going
- 8:39to surprise them. We saw Georgia, L Ole Miss, I
- 8:41think that is going to be a help, certainly for Oregon.
- 8:44Even though they got him in Austin, they know this is not
- 8:46going to be a pushover. This is not the name brand that
- 8:49we're used to with Indiana football.
- 8:50I think Oregon's going to be ready and I give the advantage
- 8:53to. I think overall that offensive
- 8:56line hasn't been as good. I do have concerns about that
- 8:58running game and all the running packs that they're losing.
- 9:00I mean that is. Big.
- 9:01Fair, big concern and if they get banged up there, what do
- 9:06they have now? It's working.
- 9:07They probably got some dudes still right, but you're going
- 9:09pretty far down the. Reason those dudes aren't seeing
- 9:11the playing field. I mean you're looking what would
- 9:13been coming into the year their 5th running back.
- 9:15You know, that's wasn't isn't that where it got eventually to
- 9:19at USC wasn't like King Miller way down the the depth chart to
- 9:23begin. I think he was anyways, let's
- 9:25let's let's go to last night and let's go to Waco because this
- 9:29this came if especially though, I have no idea how I stake out
- 9:33of the 1st 20 minutes with the lead.
- 9:34No, absolutely, other than the fact they play their ass on on
- 9:37defense. But it seemed like Baylor was
- 9:38always It's like the floor was tilted. 2524 and I felt like
- 9:43when the halftime buzzer went off, I had to look at the score
- 9:45bug like 3 different times like that.
- 9:47That can't be right. It's not winning this
- 9:48basketball. Game.
- 9:49It felt like it should have been 3525.
- 9:51It should have been yes, but but to there I was stage credit.
- 9:54They play their tails off and then here comes Lipsy in the
- 9:572nd. 26 minutes, 24 points. That's not a bad night.
- 10:01Not at all. 24 points and 26 minutes on a night where Malin
- 10:04Monchilovich scored his first basket with I think a minute and
- 10:08a half gone in the first. In the second-half, he was.
- 10:10He was blanked in the 1st 20 minutes.
- 10:12Blake Buchanan did not score all night long.
- 10:15Plita didn't see score. I did score.
- 10:17I make one bucket. Bateman, who made some big
- 10:19shots. He was blank last night, but it
- 10:23was Lipsy. And maybe it's just as I was
- 10:25going to say more importantly, but that's not fair to Lipsy
- 10:27because he's so good. But Joshua Jefferson night in
- 10:31and night out, I don't know where he ranks.
- 10:34I should have looked at the betting markets as far as player
- 10:36of the year because it seems like it's Boozers award.
- 10:39But Joshua Jefferson's price has to be getting shorter and
- 10:42shorter because the more you watch this Iowa State team, and
- 10:45if they continue to reside in the rarefied air that they
- 10:49currently reside in is what the number three team in the
- 10:52country? More people are going to watch
- 10:54this Iowa State team and see #5 and see the impact that
- 10:58Jefferson has on this team coming off the triple double.
- 11:01He is so damn good. If they didn't have him during
- 11:05the first half, they. Were down 10, they would have
- 11:07been, yes. And in that early stretch he had
- 11:10like 2 buckets of great assists. They run everything through
- 11:12bushel. Rebounds.
- 11:13Top of the key. All right, give it to Jefferson
- 11:15and we'll go from there. I mean, this is not just what
- 11:17you're used to traditionally with the point guard and the
- 11:19five positions. He is in the old school point,
- 11:22point forward. You know, he used to hear that
- 11:23term a lot more. You did.
- 11:25And this is the reality of the way that they play.
- 11:27Speaking of that market, the player of the year market.
- 11:30It's got to be boozer short price.
- 11:32I'm going to bring it up here. Awards.
- 11:33Let's go over to awards for the Wooden Award, which I am a voter
- 11:39for, as you are for the Heisman. We got both covered in college
- 11:42basketball. The guy we talked about the
- 11:44other day actually helped me out with that.
- 11:46Keith Murphy. Oh, did he?
- 11:47Yeah. He was the one that sent along
- 11:48by name for that. Thanks to Keith for that.
- 11:50And. You should because you watch
- 11:51his. Well, you bet on him.
- 11:53That's true, but I don't bet in this market.
- 11:55You also taught me that one. I decided to stay away.
- 11:57Good. I'm glad.
- 11:58Camera Boozer is the favorite -190 he's a Duke guy.
- 12:02He's really good. Yep.
- 12:03Get it? Yep.
- 12:04Agent Banstra, he's second. +23 Yu Yep.
- 12:08And there's Joshua Jefferson. He's the third choice.
- 12:10He's the third choice. How about that?
- 12:12Is he above double digits? 9:00 to 1:00.
- 12:14This is that DraftKings? Yeah, he is the head of Braden
- 12:18Smith. Wow.
- 12:19I had to Landenborg at Michigan. Who's 35 to 1?
- 12:21Where's Toppin? He's 60 to one now.
- 12:23It's the 8th betting choice. I know they got a couple of L's
- 12:26on that resume. The 8th betting choice is 60 to
- 12:291. 60 to 1. Holy mackerel.
- 12:31What if Darren Peterson, we didn't get to talk about this
- 12:34yesterday? Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 12:35You you thought he was done for the year.
- 12:36Well, I just thought he was going to take, you know, pulling
- 12:39Michael Porter with Mizzou. And there were a couple of
- 12:41Kansas fans, I think, that had the same thought process you
- 12:44did, right? And then he hits his.
- 12:46What's his price, Trent? Because there's a no.
- 12:48I can bet this mark. 75 to 1. Is he really?
- 12:5175 to 1. See, I I think he might be
- 12:53throwing your money away because I just.
- 12:55Unless Boozer gets hurt. Right.
- 12:57Right. And you don't want that.
- 12:59Even if you bet in this market, you don't want that.
- 13:00You don't want to make a bet and hope for a guy to get a snap on
- 13:04an ACL or whatever. You don't want that.
- 13:06But boy, that's a huge he's 75 to 1.
- 13:09David Lipsey, also in the top 15.
- 13:11He's 100 to one. You're looking for a long shot.
- 13:14Where's Sturtz? Is Sturtz listed?
- 13:16He was before the season. He is no longer.
- 13:19He is on there still. Yes, he is the 20th betting
- 13:21choice at 120 to. 120 to. One, how about Tucker Devries
- 13:25250 to one take a real deep shot. 1 deep shot.
- 13:30I wouldn't mind which one Graham Ek out of Gonzaga because
- 13:32they're Gonzaga and they're probably going to be 31 and 2 by
- 13:36the time Selection Sunday comes around.
- 13:38Ek is their best player. 90 to one for him but fun market.
- 13:41Joshua Jefferson, the third betting choices.
- 13:44And I mentioned the other day, it might have been yesterday.
- 13:46You know, Ken Pomeroy, his the way that his efficiency numbers
- 13:49put it, he's the second choice in his numbers that he has now.
- 13:52I think it's a pretty big gap between 1:00 and 2:00.
- 13:54But regardless, I think there's probably plenty of voters that
- 13:57are looking at that. I mean Ken Pomeroy think of.
- 14:00Oh God, he's a guy. How much that has changed over
- 14:03the last 15? Years No, you're right.
- 14:04He mean he's a guy that's got he's got a lot of respect behind
- 14:07his name to that end, was it the Iowa State game last night or
- 14:11was it one of the IT must have been the Iowa State game.
- 14:13Ken Palm actually has an official tab on there as as to
- 14:17who's doing the yes and and do they rate?
- 14:20Them they do. I don't know how those ratings
- 14:22come into being, but yes. Because it was King McClure.
- 14:25I'm not sure who did the play by play of the game last night.
- 14:28I don't know why King McClure takes as many errors as he does.
- 14:30I don't mind him. Yeah, he's fine.
- 14:32I think he's fine. You got.
- 14:36So what did they do? How did they do?
- 14:38They rank them as to good crew, bad crew.
- 14:41Well, it has each official ranked individually and Marcus
- 14:45Petticrew is right fifth by the Kenpon metric.
- 14:49In all of the officials in college basketball.
- 14:52Tony Padilla is 6th and Doug Sermons is 11th.
- 14:58So I've stayed a pretty good. Crew, that's a good.
- 14:59Crew. That's a really good crew.
- 15:01Yes, because how far down does it?
- 15:03Go Well it does. You have to click on the box
- 15:05score and then it has each Oh I see, let let me click on pull.
- 15:08Up the Drake game, I think the Drake game was poorly
- 15:11officiated. I didn't see enough to form an
- 15:12opinion on that. Yes, I mean, from an official
- 15:14perspective, other than the fact that that times have changed on
- 15:18Forest Ave., but we'll be kind and put it that way.
- 15:22All right, let's go to the Drake game.
- 15:23Open up the box score for the Doggies getting absolutely
- 15:26throttled by Bradley. The only thing I got right
- 15:28yesterday was that, and oh, that was an ugly performance.
- 15:32Only two guys, in fact, were listed here.
- 15:34Do they only have two? You know what?
- 15:36I wasn't counting, Trent. I, I I don't know.
- 15:39Randy McCall, who I know the name, he's 36 in Irvin Wilson,
- 15:44127th. All right, Irv, you've got some
- 15:45work to. Do but you can click on then
- 15:47each of these and this is the thing that I every once in a
- 15:50while will fall into the trap of.
- 15:52I've seen the sheer volume of games like.
- 15:54How many games they've done so far I.
- 15:55Just saw this guy the other night.
- 15:57I just because last night I think during that same
- 16:01discussion, one of them had done 50 games.
- 16:05Really. Can you go back to last night's
- 16:07crew and see how? Yeah, it's it was Tony Padilla.
- 16:09He has done 50 games, 50. That was his 50th game last
- 16:12night. This is what he he's done talk.
- 16:14Show host, pay attention this not to me to what you're
- 16:17hearing. Is over the past week dating
- 16:21back to last Tuesday? Yeah.
- 16:22Tony Padilla. What was he?
- 16:25Cal Berkeley as Cal hosted Louisville Tell.
- 16:28Don't tell me he flew to the East Coast for the next.
- 16:30Night. Nope.
- 16:30Two nights later, just drove up to UC Davis.
- 16:33OK. But took his time.
- 16:36It's not like he had a game the next night.
- 16:38Then two days later, he was in Orlando.
- 16:40Went from. That's not a drive.
- 16:42Davis, CA to Orlando, did the UCF Kansas game in Orlando, then
- 16:48came back the next day to Des Moines where he was here for the
- 16:52Drake Indiana State game. Two days later he was in
- 16:55Morgantown and then a day later he's in Waco.
- 16:59You if you're if you're an official with any kind of cachet
- 17:02behind your name, you basically are, you know, kissing the
- 17:05family goodbye in November and see in April.
- 17:07Yeah, right. Absolutely.
- 17:09Very few. And and you told was it I think
- 17:12you say you came up with a number last year of a a ballpark
- 17:16number with these guys make per game.
- 17:18Was it you that was telling me that?
- 17:19Yes, I remember us bringing that up and.
- 17:22I mean, you got to make it while you can, right?
- 17:24It's not like it's a never ending season.
- 17:27You've got essentially 5 months at best.
- 17:32Let's see here a couple of grand a game.
- 17:34Is that crazy Yeah. 1000 to 3000 for a game.
- 17:38So yeah, probably when you're doing up, say, a major so.
- 17:40That night, that crew last night was probably on the high end of
- 17:43the scale. Would you say that?
- 17:45Probably all told around 10 grand right between the three of
- 17:47them. Might anticipate, you know,
- 17:48something like that. Maybe 75?
- 17:50Good night's work for getting booed.
- 17:52Yes, right for two hours. For getting yelled at by
- 17:54coaches. You can handle that, right?
- 17:57That kind of cash. And get on the plane or in a
- 17:59little car and and off to the next site.
- 18:02I had a buddy that tried really hard to make it to this level to
- 18:05make it and he did a bunch of D2 games.
- 18:10It was he was working in at Iowa.
- 18:11He was the runs in our minerals at the University of Iowa and
- 18:15then he's now at Michigan, but tried in D2 and kind of hit that
- 18:19level. But here's another thing, you
- 18:20know, he was in his late 20s and was making some pretty good
- 18:23rounds moving up in a possibility start have kids
- 18:27yeah. And you look at it and what we
- 18:29just said, they go kids in athletics, kids that play
- 18:33basketball, if you like basketball that much if.
- 18:34Basketball family, you're probably.
- 18:37You're giving up a lot. No, I agree.
- 18:39Do you know? I mean, I know they're assigned
- 18:44to these things, but are they are they on the hook for their
- 18:48own travel, their own expenses? So that 25190 you're an
- 18:52independent contractor, so you've got to pay your, I mean,
- 18:55you write it off, but still. So you got to have somebody
- 18:58working with you as as to, you know, get your travel all set up
- 19:01in your hotels. And anyways, cool, I didn't know
- 19:03that. Some good stuff.
- 19:05We mentioned Drake Ugly. Yeah, and and you and I.
- 19:09You and I was in it at the half. I don't know how because when I
- 19:11turned it on, they were getting their you know what's kicked and
- 19:13they cut it to like. They couldn't get a stop.
- 19:16Belmont made a three at the end of the first half to extend the
- 19:20lead to three or to whatever. And then the second-half it was,
- 19:23I mean, I would, I just spent a lot of time there because I was
- 19:25stated started in the second-half.
- 19:26It felt like every time I flipped over it was just another
- 19:29shot and another. Shot So are they the team to
- 19:31beat in the Valley? Belmont's tough for me because
- 19:36there's nights like that where they look like the team can make
- 19:38a Sweet 16. When you shoot like that on the
- 19:41road against a good defensive team like you and I, that's the
- 19:43team you get excited about. But the other part Smiley shoot
- 19:46like that. Every night.
- 19:47What's his name? Yeah, Jack Smiley, John Smile.
- 19:49Whatever. Smiley's his last name he
- 19:51couldn't miss. And remember, Belmont had come
- 19:53in and they had just lost a couple of games.
- 19:54They lost to Southern Illinois at home.
- 19:57Southern Illinois is not very good.
- 19:59Lost to the Indiana State team that just lost to Drake.
- 20:02No, I don't think that they're the favorite.
- 20:04I I love the way they play. They're fun to watch because of
- 20:08they can actually get out there. One of the few teams that
- 20:09actually plays with at least a little bit of place in the NVC
- 20:12because that is certainly not the case in the Missouri Valley.
- 20:16The Murray State team is the most confounding to me.
- 20:18I, I got to see more out of this.
- 20:19I haven't seen them yet. As we saw last night, Illinois
- 20:22State, they lose at Valpo after we were just talking about
- 20:26Illinois State, Murray State's the only undefeated team left.
- 20:29They have not played at Gauntlet by any means, still at Six and
- 20:32OB, Drake, Valpo, SIU, Illinois, Chicago, Bradley that was at
- 20:37home and Evansville. So they haven't exactly gone
- 20:40through a gauntlet yet, but they Murray State with Ryan Miller is
- 20:45their coach in his first year. How do you put that together in
- 20:48today's day and age? That's eye opening.
- 20:50We'll take the time out, we'll come back, We'll get into
- 20:52tonight's game. We're not going to touch
- 20:54tomorrow's game. Bama's going to join us tomorrow
- 20:56as well. But Bama, Bob, Trent and I will
- 20:57talk more about this game tonight.
- 20:59How do we see it playing out? We'll do that on the other side.
- 21:02Still to come this hour, David Eicholt on the Hawks.
- 21:05Hour number two, Dave Sinican covers the Packers.
- 21:08We'll get his perspective on Packers and Bears.
- 21:11And then Dalton Wasserman from PO Football, focus.com, Miller
- 21:14and Condon. Glad you're with us on a
- 21:16Thursday. What have you got?
- 21:17Got this from one of our listeners.
- 21:19Mike Padilla's full time job is a bail bondsman.
- 21:22Really. How about that combo?
- 21:26He's a bail bond. So.
- 21:28So he's the guy that like, what was the name of the show that I
- 21:31No, I didn't. I used to watch it, but it was
- 21:32on dog. Yeah.
- 21:35The guy with the hair. Yes.
- 21:36Yes. Is he still alive?
- 21:37No. His wife died.
- 21:38That's what it was. OK.
- 21:39Yeah, his wife passed away. Bleach blonde hair.
- 21:42Bleach. Blonde hair?
- 21:43Yes, Dog the Bounty Hunter. And Padilla and the bail
- 21:47bondsman as well. That's wild.
- 21:49Miller and Condon, glad you're with us, talking sports with
- 21:52you. And we'll do so until 2 on the
- 21:54Iowa Sports Radio Network 1230.
- 22:09Straight up. Miller and Condon, welcome back.
- 22:11Iowa Sports Radio Network with you until two o'clock. 15
- 22:15minutes from now, David Icolt will join us.
- 22:18Catch up with David on the latest on Iowa.
- 22:21But right now, you know what the music means.
- 22:22Time to talk to our buddy Bama Bob.
- 22:26And we'll do so only four more times.
- 22:29Hi buddy. How are you, Bama?
- 22:31I'm doing good, Yeah, a few and far between now, aren't they?
- 22:35Yeah, they really are. But we've got let's make the
- 22:38best of these ones here tonight. Old miss in Miami and and away
- 22:42we go. We'll save tomorrow for
- 22:43tomorrow. You'll join us at the same time
- 22:45tomorrow, 12:30 to talk about the the Big 10 tilt.
- 22:49But we've got a Miami team and their defense and an old mess
- 22:52team and their offense colliding tonight night.
- 22:55And I just see it as a low scoring game.
- 22:59Trent and I were talking about this earlier.
- 23:01Not the number the the over under is 52.
- 23:04That would surprise me if it goes under.
- 23:06It's certainly been wrong most of the seasons.
- 23:08I want to put that out there to begin with.
- 23:10But is this a, you know, a 2720 type of game?
- 23:14How do you see the how do you see this scoring thing up?
- 23:18Bama give me kind of an idea. It's really fascinating.
- 23:23You know, Miami is you really look at the games they played,
- 23:27they really haven't scored a lot of points, right?
- 23:29I mean, it wasn't the ugly game they had against A&M in the
- 23:31first, by the way. I mean, think about this guys.
- 23:35We were really getting ready for Georgia, Ohio State in this
- 23:39round, right? And I'm not saying that we're
- 23:41all disappointed because I'm not.
- 23:44I think it's got a chance to be a good game.
- 23:46I wonder how much the ratings and the prices and all that
- 23:48might hurt because this this was a monster matchup when you
- 23:51looked at the bracket right in the semis.
- 23:54But but here we are. No, this one.
- 23:55I don't know, to be honest with you.
- 23:57I know that's not a, you know, great insider what you want to
- 23:58hear, but you know, Miami is is they're not a dynamic offense
- 24:03and and but Ole Miss and again, doesn't have a great defense.
- 24:06I think it's better under under Golding than it was under Kiffin
- 24:11Golding is, even though he was the defensive coordinator and I
- 24:14don't I don't. Maybe that's just happenstance
- 24:16or or luck or maybe it is something that that he's allowed
- 24:20to do more now and take, you know, fewer risks or whatever on
- 24:23defense. I think this game gets into the
- 24:2720s. I don't know about the well, you
- 24:30said 52. I mean, that's, I mean, that's a
- 24:33real, I think it's a really good line because, you know, I could
- 24:36see, you know what 202724 gets. You 51 gets you right there, I
- 24:43mean. And that's a pretty high scoring
- 24:45game. I don't know that both teams, I
- 24:47don't think it's going to be a runaway.
- 24:49I think Ole Miss is on a mission, but then again, at some
- 24:53point they listen. They've never faced a defense
- 24:57even in the in the defensive heavy SEC that I don't think
- 25:00they've faced anything like what they're going to see tonight.
- 25:02And we've talked about it, Ruben Bain and that defensive line is
- 25:06just they're unbelievable. That's an NFL front that they're
- 25:09going to be seeing tonight. They're going to see, you know,
- 25:11they got line, but they got they have they have dudes of all
- 25:14three levels on defense. Really the question to me is can
- 25:18shambles make those plays that he made against Georgia?
- 25:22And I don't know that you can repeat that.
- 25:23I mean, those were just all time quarterback scrambles and and
- 25:28you know, Johnny Manziel mixed with Patrick Mahomes really is
- 25:31what those what those plays were.
- 25:33And can you repeat that? I don't the odds tell you, you
- 25:36know, logic tells you no, but then you see him do it and why
- 25:39not? You know, I think it's maybe a
- 25:42little lower scoring than what we think it I just, I don't
- 25:48think either team is going to go up and down the field.
- 25:50Carson back to me as always. This is the wild card in this
- 25:53game. And we, I've said it before,
- 25:55I'll say it again. You know, he doesn't have to do
- 25:58a lot. He can throw you out of the
- 25:59game. He can also win you a game.
- 26:03I think I would not. If you're telling me who, which
- 26:06quarterback do I want to have to have a drive in the last two and
- 26:09a half, 3 minutes of the game, it would be shambles.
- 26:12Although he's going up against a better defense.
- 26:14So I just think it's a fascinating match up.
- 26:16And again, for all the people that are upset that we didn't
- 26:19get Ohio State and Georgia, which would have been a
- 26:21heavyweight, he'll understand. I just think this is this is a
- 26:25pretty good. I love the new blood.
- 26:26Matchup I do too. I do too.
- 26:29And I think it's crazy that that Ole Miss is the last, you know,
- 26:32last one flying a flag for the SEC, right?
- 26:35It's just I, I think you could have got a lot of money on that
- 26:39at the beginning of the year. Certainly.
- 26:40Hey, who's the last team? Who's the last FCC team in the
- 26:43playoffs? You could have gotten pretty
- 26:45good odds on Ole Miss over some others.
- 26:47But I just think it's a fascinating game.
- 26:49Can't wait to watch it. I do think they answer your
- 26:51question long windedly. I think it is.
- 26:53I think the under is in play. I do.
- 26:55Bama, I have a working theory here.
- 26:57I want to run this past you. I brought it up to Ken a little
- 26:59bit earlier and it's Ole Miss now, round one.
- 27:02Tulane team, they saw, they throttled, they throttled again.
- 27:05Georgia, they're not scared of them.
- 27:07Had the lead going into the fourth quarter, fell apart, but
- 27:09they knew them. They game plan for them, they
- 27:11scheme for them. Now with all these assistant
- 27:13coaches flying back and forth between Baton Rouge and Oxford
- 27:15and all we got to do here, we're putting in a game plan and now
- 27:18we're recruiting for LSU. Everything that's going on, new
- 27:21team, no new program, new game plan, everything that goes into
- 27:24it, that finally we see what we thought maybe we're going to see
- 27:27a route ago that it actually happens tonight that the
- 27:30assistants being all over the place, not being able to be
- 27:32fully in it shows up. Can you buy into that?
- 27:36I certainly can, and I think it's.
- 27:37An excellent point because you mentioned that, listen, they
- 27:40were more than likely they're going to beat Tulane no matter
- 27:42what. And I think that team was just
- 27:44on a mission that week because that was the week that Kiffin
- 27:47left, right. So I think that first game was,
- 27:49you know, let's stick it to him. And I do think I think there's,
- 27:52there is a lot of credence to the fact that they knew Georgia,
- 27:56they'd already played them what, 5-6 weeks early, right?
- 27:58He was later. Maybe it's the middle of the
- 28:00season, but they, you know, they play them every year, played
- 28:02them in the last couple of years, had to lead, as you said,
- 28:05going into the fourth quarter for whatever reason, couldn't
- 28:07hold it. I think there's something to
- 28:10that. And I just don't see how and you
- 28:13mentioned it. I mean, the, the amount of work
- 28:16and hours and you're it, you know, the, the coaches, whether
- 28:18it's a, a college staff for a playoff game or an NFL staff for
- 28:24a playoff game. It just the hours and the prep
- 28:26and the minute details. How can you possibly focus on
- 28:31everything you needed to focus on?
- 28:33Because you're right on one side you got to devise a game plan
- 28:36for Miami and on this other side you're trying to recruit guys to
- 28:39go to another school. I don't know how you do it.
- 28:41I don't know what the breakdown has been.
- 28:43I know they haven't all been the staff has not been all in the
- 28:47same building, you know, since they since they walked off the
- 28:51field with Georgia, they've been all over the place.
- 28:53Now I would I'm hoping that maybe the last day or two,
- 28:56whatever, you know, they can they can all come together and
- 28:59come up with a plan And maybe it's just as much in game as
- 29:02anything. But I mean, they're going to
- 29:03look at that film from Miami and go, wow, you know, how are we
- 29:06going to break this down? I don't know how you're going to
- 29:08really run against them. I know they've got a really good
- 29:12running back, but man, that again, that front is just it's
- 29:17so impressive. And I think there is advantage
- 29:21Miami on paper in terms of preparation and everything else
- 29:26that that has gone into this. But you know, again, just I
- 29:31don't know if they're on a mission or everything or however
- 29:33you want to put it. And then, you know, last week
- 29:36after the Georgia game was all the drama, you know, his wife's
- 29:38going to be able to coach or Lane going to let him coach.
- 29:40And again, just just the drama that is the vortex around
- 29:44Kiffin. It just gets exhausting.
- 29:46Well, even going into the game. Is he, is ESPN going to have
- 29:48them as part of the broadcast? Remember, he wanted to go to the
- 29:51game. Yeah, exactly.
- 29:52And. And and wound up going to.
- 29:53The women's basketball. Right and and walking out with.
- 29:55Mulkey arm in arm? Yeah, holding hands.
- 29:58Like what? That's just odd, man.
- 30:00I mean, it's better. Than the fake accent that his
- 30:04predecessor had. Well, that is true.
- 30:06I'll give you. That I mean, Oh my gosh, that's
- 30:09just that's just talk about cringe ones.
- 30:11I truly was. And then.
- 30:12And by the way, I think. Kiffin and Mulkey are just
- 30:15probably made for one. I don't mean that any kind of
- 30:18romantic thing or I'm just talking about coaching styles.
- 30:22Who gives a crap? It's all about me.
- 30:24Everything else, I mean, they're just they're well, that's that's
- 30:27a that's a match made in heaven. When you talk about head coaches
- 30:30and look very successful. They've won everywhere they've
- 30:34been. So it's hard to it's hard to
- 30:36throw stones at it, but just just two coaches that are not at
- 30:40the top of my list. I think Trent, to answer your
- 30:43question, I think that is an absolutely fair.
- 30:46Yeah, I do too. Critique.
- 30:47Of the situation. Because I don't know how you, I
- 30:49don't know how they could have possibly been as prepared as
- 30:53they want to be for this game. No question, Malachi.
- 30:56Tony Boys is, I don't want to call him an X Factor because
- 30:58everybody knows about him, yes, but this is a true freshman
- 31:01we're talking about. He hasn't done a whole lot
- 31:02during the. Playoff now.
- 31:04The win game against A&M is a reason for that.
- 31:06But yeah, he's been pretty quiet.
- 31:08Yeah, at least in terms in the receiving game.
- 31:10Yeah, it's I think it's tonight Pop a big.
- 31:12One yeah. Against.
- 31:13That Ole Miss D, maybe a couple, definitely consuading.
- 31:15Yep. All right, Bama.
- 31:17So we're we're all going to go on record our final minute here
- 31:19we are we all taking Trent, taking Miami, I'm taking Miami.
- 31:24Is it consensus? Are you going to take Miami or
- 31:26take the SEC and fly that flag with Ole Miss?
- 31:30I will not be upset of old miss wins.
- 31:33Yeah, I think I'm going to have to take Miami for the reasons we
- 31:36just talked about in terms of preparation and split staff.
- 31:39And you mentioned Tony, I mean he may pop one in the in the
- 31:42punk and that's really the return is what was what won the
- 31:45game. They're listen, they're going to
- 31:47pound it with Fletcher. Yep, and then they're going to
- 31:50ask Beck not to screw it up basically.
- 31:52And I think I think they can win it however you want to win it.
- 31:55I think crystal ball is, you know, I wouldn't have thought at
- 31:58the beginning of the playoff, right, But I haven't watched
- 32:01these two games. I'm like, wow, that is a legit
- 32:05team and I just, we'll talk. About it More tomorrow I.
- 32:09Think we're headed to Miami, Indiana championship game and
- 32:12wow, how much fun would that be? Just physical versus old school
- 32:17football. But I think Miami wins tonight.
- 32:18Good stuff, buddy. We'll talk to you this time.
- 32:20Tomorrow Thank you Bama Bob appreciate it always enjoy guys
- 32:23take. Care.
- 32:23Good to talk to you, Bama Bob. As we take a look at Semi final
- 32:27#1, we'll take a listen to David Icolt next.
- 32:29He joins Miller and Condon on the Iowa Sports Radio Network.
- 32:41I love Hall and Oates. Noreen Condon, welcome back,
- 32:44Iowa Sports Radio Network. We're with you until 2:00, by
- 32:48the way, before we get to David Ickel to join us.
- 32:50He's on hold. Kyler Casper to BYU.
- 32:52Did you see that coming? Yeah, you did BYU, not BYU, but
- 32:58he's got. Six career catches.
- 32:59Yeah. No, I know he's.
- 33:01True, and anywhere outside of the.
- 33:02State of Iowa, OK, a former sports star that's done nothing.
- 33:06Yeah, it's because of his dad. Yeah.
- 33:08Just thought maybe. Did he?
- 33:10Kick the tires at. Oh, maybe.
- 33:11I don't think I would kick the tires.
- 33:13Do you know, David? Good to talk to you about?
- 33:14Yeah, There you go. No good to.
- 33:16Talk to you guys too. You know, I really don't think
- 33:19so. From anything I've heard, there
- 33:20really wasn't much interest there.
- 33:22And this is something I've kind of repeatedly said because as
- 33:25somebody who does defend recruiting rankings for little
- 33:28obvious reasons, and I think there's a lot of value in them,
- 33:31right? But if you're a former 4 star or
- 33:33five star and you don't play much, and he's had injuries too,
- 33:36so you got to give him a little bit of the benefit of the doubt.
- 33:39But if you haven't played much in two or three years of college
- 33:42football and you transfer and you're referring to recruiting
- 33:44rankings, you're not that guy anymore.
- 33:46You're just another guy. Fairpoint No.
- 33:49Absolutely Fairpoint. Well, let's start there and
- 33:52we're we're going to move around.
- 33:53Well, it's not with Casper, but let's stay in that genre
- 33:57entrigger. I, I think that this one caught
- 34:00most people by surprise. Were there any whispers?
- 34:02Was there anything that would have led you to believe in the
- 34:04days leading up to it that maybe there's going to be a shoe drop
- 34:09that nobody saw coming? Where were you on that, David?
- 34:12You know, I I try to drop. Vague hints to people about just
- 34:16expect the unexpected. And I've told you guys
- 34:18repeatedly, it takes a lot for me to be surprised.
- 34:21I really wasn't too surprised by this.
- 34:23So let me let me rewind about a month ago I heard from a few
- 34:26people that enteringer was looking to turn pro.
- 34:29So I started asking around a couple pro scouts.
- 34:31You know what his outlook might be.
- 34:33They all agreed he needed more more power for tape, right?
- 34:36And that's why I think you would have been a big breakout player
- 34:39last year. But I'm.
- 34:41Also of the opinion. And just based on talking to
- 34:43some people, there are people in his camp to where if Enteringer
- 34:47had really been healthy and gotten a substantial role last
- 34:50season, I think the odds would have been he could have
- 34:53transferred last season. But I also want to say this,
- 34:57Cohen's an outstanding kid. He was all in as a Hawkeye.
- 35:02And keep in mind, this is the guy who's been, he was voted
- 35:05A-Team captain by everybody every single week.
- 35:08And he represented Iowa at media day.
- 35:10So I don't think that should be shortchanged, right?
- 35:13This really doesn't surprise me. And that's why when I was down
- 35:16in Tampa over Christmas and then for the bowl game, I did tweet
- 35:20out the clip at the time, too, because I was kind of curious
- 35:23how it was going to unfold. But I point blank asked Cohen
- 35:27entering her refuse coming back next season.
- 35:29And he said, yeah, yeah, I am. And he kind of laughed it off.
- 35:32And then two minutes later, in that same interview I have
- 35:34one-on-one, I asked him about what he learned this season and
- 35:38what he's going to use it going in next season as far as
- 35:41leadership. And he talked about how close
- 35:43teams Zach Lutmer had got. And he said, I can't wait to
- 35:45lead alongside him. So again, I'm not too upset
- 35:49about Cohen entering or answering that because, you
- 35:52know, I do think he could have played it off a lot better.
- 35:54But the whole situation is just very, very interesting to me.
- 35:58And I'll be very curious where he lines up because it's kind of
- 36:01a hard sell to me guys, if you're playing, if you're
- 36:04starting for Phil Parker secondary and the school and
- 36:08probably Cohen himself would admit he probably got a decent
- 36:11offer to stay at Iowa. I really don't think there's a
- 36:14better place you could go to be developed than by Phil Parker
- 36:17and the Iowa defense with that. They got 5 additions to this
- 36:22point. Which one's your favorite?
- 36:23Or maybe who's the guy that's going to be most impactful of
- 36:26the five they have right now? And I mean.
- 36:29Most. Impactful.
- 36:30I think you got to go, Eli Ozick.
- 36:33You're trying to rebuild. That the the specialist room at
- 36:36the time and he's a really good kicker with multiple years of
- 36:39eligibility. I really like Kamari Brown from
- 36:42Elon. I think he's about 2:45 right
- 36:45now putting like 10 lbs on. He's incredibly productive.
- 36:48I'm going to go with Villanova safety Anthony Hawkins, but he
- 36:52just has size. You can't teach 6 foot three
- 36:55likely to play safety for this Hawkeye team.
- 36:58I think he's obviously get cut to 2D.
- 36:59Maybe he starts this year. He was very productive at
- 37:02Villanova. He's a ball hawk.
- 37:04You see him, he comes across as a very physical point of attack
- 37:08kind of tackler too. And I think, again, you combine
- 37:10him with that Phil Parker defense, especially with all the
- 37:13opportunity that's at hand, I really love why I think he can
- 37:17bring to the table. And on top of that, guys he's
- 37:20got, I believe, three years of eligibility remaining.
- 37:22But I was getting guys with multiple years of eligibility,
- 37:25and I think that's absolutely critical when you look at the
- 37:28makeup of this team at this point in time.
- 37:30Yeah, I love my secondary. 63 whether you're corner or safety.
- 37:33Good stuff. Reese Dakin obviously gone.
- 37:36It's been back-to-back Aussies. Is that where they will look
- 37:38again? You know, that's something.
- 37:41I'm very interested about I know that they kind of scouted
- 37:44players down at the lower level. I mean, I've heard as low as D3
- 37:47as well. They they looked at a couple
- 37:49players from there. I really don't think that
- 37:51they'll be able to go the Australian route because you
- 37:53don't have a special teams coordinator in place to get them
- 37:56halfway across the country, right.
- 37:58So again, I I think the portal period from a specialist
- 38:01timeline kind of sucks for Iowa because I think they have Brock
- 38:05Sherman, who's kind of been Lamar was his right hand man
- 38:08leading the pack. I think he will get shot at
- 38:10getting the full time gig. But I also think that's a very
- 38:12lofty promotion. But I just don't see how you go
- 38:16send an analyst halfway across the world to go try to get a
- 38:19punter. But, you know, I, I think Iowa
- 38:22fans, they obviously want to see a new punter, but I also think
- 38:25Iowa fans like to think, well, Iowa won't be punting much next
- 38:28season, right? So the the.
- 38:30Workout the workload. Might not be as needed as it was
- 38:33in years past and probably helps.
- 38:35The relationship that they have with Pro Kick Australia, Dakin
- 38:38was set up well before he made his commitment.
- 38:41I remember that story and obviously what Tori Taylor
- 38:43turned into. So if they do have somebody over
- 38:45there looking for a home, a potential connection there,
- 38:48well, the biggest need position remains wide receiver.
- 38:50And yes, they need help on the D line, AD tackle and another
- 38:53safety, all those things. But they got a safety coming in
- 38:55today did. You see that from, right?
- 38:57But they need. They they need guys like that.
- 39:01Kate Wolford is one name we've talked about Kent State
- 39:03speedster out there, some ridiculous numbers, Tony Diaz
- 39:06another. Are we feeling good about that
- 39:08or are they going to be maybe scraping the bottom of the
- 39:10barrel here when we get to the end of the portal, you know,
- 39:13wide? Receivers, just one of those
- 39:14positions with Iowa guys where I've spent so much time thinking
- 39:17about it. And I mean this with all due
- 39:19respect, how do you sell it without overpaying, right?
- 39:24You're talking about a team that's best passing game was
- 39:27over 200 yards. They only crossed that mark once
- 39:30and that was the very last game of the season.
- 39:32Now, look, Iowa adjusted halfway through the year, I believe
- 39:35offensively, I think they really started really relying on Mark
- 39:38Gronowski's legs a lot more. They ran a lot more RPO's.
- 39:41You know, they got different halfbacks involved, but as far
- 39:44as Wolfer goes, he's wrapping up his visit at this point guys,
- 39:48and told a wide receiver commit, I'm not going to feel good about
- 39:51any of it. I just you got to see it at this
- 39:54point in time because again, I don't know how much you're going
- 39:57to be able to sell. And, and again, with all the
- 39:59respect, if you're talking about scraping the bomb of the barrel,
- 40:02Kent State was the worst power. It was the worst FBS team in
- 40:06football this year. Well Wolfer's numbers are
- 40:08ridiculous though. Like 19 catches, 7 touchdowns.
- 40:12I had the most yards per catch, I believe across college.
- 40:14Shabad had about 500 yards. But then you also go to Tony
- 40:17Diaz, who again, I like his numbers.
- 40:19Those Texas Rio Grande Valley guys, it's their first year
- 40:23playing college football as a program.
- 40:25So if those two aren't the bomb of the barrel, I'm not speaking
- 40:29individual talent wise. I'm not saying that whatsoever,
- 40:31right? I'm saying from a program
- 40:33standpoint, I I was kind of reaching right now I think for
- 40:36wide receivers, but again, they need speed they.
- 40:39Need guys that want to go have that.
- 40:40Big chip on their shoulder, they're replacing so much and we
- 40:43need to get the break. David, we, we're out of time
- 40:46brother. Appreciate it.
- 40:47We'll talk to you down the road. David Eichold, our 2 is next.
- 40:50Miller and Condon.
