- 0:00Speaker 1: And he's the coach at you kind of great great,
- 0:01Speaker 1: great trip break. Now he's with the Chiefs. He's won
- 0:03Speaker 1: like three titles there.
- 0:04Speaker 2: Back with Jean Ore. I'm on the Women's Basketball Coaches Show.
- 0:07Speaker 3: We're just talking super Bowl. Gito, big Eagles fan. Of course, Hey,
- 0:12Speaker 3: your team's won a couple of Super Bowls here. So
- 0:14Speaker 3: you know last year too.
- 0:16Speaker 1: I know, we were the only major city to not
- 0:19Speaker 1: win a Super Bowl, you know.
- 0:21Speaker 2: Before the Eagles beat the Patriots.
- 0:23Speaker 1: Yeah, like Chicago had one one, New York at one
- 0:25Speaker 1: one Boston and one one Los Angeles and one one
- 0:28Speaker 1: you know, Dallas one. You know, we're the we're the
- 0:31Speaker 1: only like nice city that you know, Seattle had won one.
- 0:36Speaker 3: Uh you even brought up the other night in your
- 0:38Speaker 3: post game Steelers Cowboys back.
- 0:40Speaker 4: In the seventies.
- 0:41Speaker 1: Well, yeah, you know, when you just have to admire,
- 0:44Speaker 1: you know, you just have to admire people that are
- 0:47Speaker 1: really really good for a long period of time. You know,
- 0:50Speaker 1: I've come to Yeah, like I've come to appreciate how
- 0:54Speaker 1: hard that is.
- 0:56Speaker 4: You know, I.
- 0:58Speaker 1: Never was a yeah, you know, but the longer I've
- 1:04Speaker 1: been up here, in the more games we win, the
- 1:07Speaker 1: more you realize how hard it is to be who
- 1:09Speaker 1: they are and have to do what they do. Nobody's
- 1:13Speaker 1: ever happy with that team. And even the Red Sox
- 1:16Speaker 1: people are delusion like they're never good enough usually to
- 1:19Speaker 1: win the World Series. But everybody thinks that they're going
- 1:23Speaker 1: to win the World Series every year because you know,
- 1:25Speaker 1: they have passionate fans. But to be in New York
- 1:29Speaker 1: and you know where you are expected to win the
- 1:33Speaker 1: Super the World Series every year because that's what they've done.
- 1:38Speaker 1: And the Steelers back then, and the Cowboys back then,
- 1:41Speaker 1: the Niners back then, it was unbelievable. I mean, growing up,
- 1:45Speaker 1: you know it was. And then the same thing was
- 1:49Speaker 1: happening in baseball, you know, the Cincinnati Reds and the
- 1:52Speaker 1: Los Angeles As we could never get to the Super
- 1:54Speaker 1: We could never get to the World Series because they
- 1:56Speaker 1: didn't have playoffs back then, So we could never get
- 1:58Speaker 1: to the World Series because we couldn't be the Reds
- 2:01Speaker 1: and we couldn't beat the Dodgers. You know, then all
- 2:04Speaker 1: of a sudden, you know, we got good enough when
- 2:06Speaker 1: we want it.
- 2:07Speaker 4: But it was great dynasties.
- 2:11Speaker 1: Man, I really appreciate them, but you know they go away.
- 2:18Speaker 2: We've been saying that for a while.
- 2:19Speaker 1: Not well, I know, but they they go away. You
- 2:22Speaker 1: know if like even if you do everything right, they
- 2:27Speaker 1: they they go away. You know, just talking to Gym
- 2:30Speaker 1: about like the Montreal Canadians, like nobody won more Stanley
- 2:35Speaker 1: Cup titles than they did.
- 2:36Speaker 4: They don't. They don't win anything anymore.
- 2:38Speaker 2: They haven't won anything. A Canadian team hasn't won since
- 2:40Speaker 2: ninety three.
- 2:41Speaker 1: Right, yeah, I mean the Cowboy was the last time
- 2:45Speaker 1: they won. I think Roger Stolbach was playing, Okay, was
- 2:49Speaker 1: Troy Aikman.
- 2:50Speaker 2: Yeah, but it's been thirty years.
- 2:52Speaker 1: It's been thirty years, thirty years, and they're America's team, right,
- 2:56Speaker 1: not anymore, not anymore. Right, It's just and that's why
- 3:01Speaker 1: you have to admire like teams like the Steelers, the Packers,
- 3:06Speaker 1: you know, the Niners, Patriots. The Patriots were good for
- 3:11Speaker 1: a long long time. It's hard, it's so hard, you know,
- 3:18Speaker 1: and you got to really take care of it, and
- 3:21Speaker 1: you really got to work hard at it because it
- 3:23Speaker 1: can't last. Nothing lasts forever, you know. But some dynasties,
- 3:29Speaker 1: when they fall, they fall hard and they never come back.
- 3:33Speaker 4: Others. Look at the Patriots, you know, everybody thought they
- 3:35Speaker 4: were dead. In the water.
- 3:37Speaker 1: And it only took this guy, you know, it only
- 3:39Speaker 1: took coach Vabel one year and they're back in the
- 3:43Speaker 1: super Bowl. So some I always attributed to the owners,
- 3:48Speaker 1: like if the owners are really, really good, they never
- 3:51Speaker 1: those dynasties don't collapse because the owners won't let them.
- 3:56Speaker 4: If they stay out of it.
- 3:57Speaker 1: If they stay out of it, it's like a it's
- 4:01Speaker 1: like a college president, you know, most of the time,
- 4:05Speaker 1: if they just stay out of your way.
- 4:09Speaker 4: Yeah, they need a university.
- 4:11Speaker 1: You can get a lot done, but it's just when
- 4:14Speaker 1: the politics or the the other stuff gets in the way,
- 4:18Speaker 1: that's when it gets yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 4:21Speaker 3: And you got to have some constants and at least
- 4:23Speaker 3: from your standpoint, the concerts for you and Chris.
- 4:26Speaker 1: Well and you have to have you have to have
- 4:29Speaker 1: a really good coach, you have to have iconic players,
- 4:33Speaker 1: and you have to have great ownership, you know, great
- 4:36Speaker 1: college presidents. I've been fortunate, you know, I was talking
- 4:39Speaker 1: to Jim about I've had like six or seven you know,
- 4:44Speaker 1: six or seven.
- 4:44Speaker 2: AD's John Toner hired you, right, yeah.
- 4:48Speaker 4: Yeah, nineteen eighty five May.
- 4:50Speaker 2: He made a couple of good good yeah, then.
- 4:52Speaker 1: Hired then he hired Jim Calhoun the following year, so yeah,
- 4:56Speaker 1: he was two for two. He did all right, he
- 4:58Speaker 1: did yeah, he did all right, and you got to yeah,
- 5:02Speaker 1: and he just I mean, he's just a great, great, great,
- 5:06Speaker 1: great man. But yet you got to hire people, and
- 5:09Speaker 1: then you've got to get out of the way. You
- 5:11Speaker 1: can't hire people and then tell him what to do,
- 5:14Speaker 1: which is what a lot of that's why this college
- 5:16Speaker 1: sports thing is going on. Hey wire, It's like athletic
- 5:20Speaker 1: directors and conference commissioners used to be in charge. Then
- 5:23Speaker 1: the presidents got involved and it all went south because
- 5:28Speaker 1: you know, how much do presidents really know about the
- 5:30Speaker 1: inner workings of college athletics And.
- 5:35Speaker 2: It's all driven by one sport we oh yeah.
- 5:37Speaker 4: And it's all driven by football.
- 5:39Speaker 1: And I don't know if there's any academic people here
- 5:41Speaker 1: to work at, you know, universities. But I don't remember
- 5:46Speaker 1: any college president coming over and asking me, Hey, what
- 5:49Speaker 1: do you think we should do with our engineering department?
- 5:54Speaker 1: So why would you come over and tell us what
- 5:57Speaker 1: to do in the athletic department. You be great at
- 6:01Speaker 1: what you do, and we'll try to be great at
- 6:03Speaker 1: what we do. And you have and at Yukon.
- 6:05Speaker 4: That's how it is.
- 6:05Speaker 2: Yeah. In the athletics program, that's how it is. Yeah.
- 6:08Speaker 4: You know we let it.
- 6:09Speaker 1: People that are great at that do that, and the
- 6:11Speaker 1: people that are great at this do this.
- 6:13Speaker 4: But it's not the case everywhere.
- 6:15Speaker 3: All Right, The lady balls are coming to town this weekend.
- 6:18Speaker 3: We'll talk about them in a minute. And your one
- 6:20Speaker 3: of your other favorite sports is starting in two weeks.
- 6:23Speaker 2: I believe baseball's in two weeks. It's crazy. Softball starts
- 6:26Speaker 2: next week.
- 6:27Speaker 3: See you kind of women's basketball coaches show Gino's here
- 6:29Speaker 3: at cafe or in Manchester.
- 6:31Speaker 2: We're back in a minute here on Learfield. To stay
- 6:32Speaker 2: with us.
