- 0:00Speaker 1: We are live in downtown Hartford for the Yukon Men's
- 0:03Speaker 1: Hockey Coaches Show, alongside Mike Cavanaugh, Adam Jardino with you.
- 0:07Speaker 1: We've got Christian Antonio, the on site engineer. We've got
- 0:09Speaker 1: Andrew Allison down in Winston Salem coach. You made it
- 0:14Speaker 1: on time. It's been a busy couple of days where
- 0:16Speaker 1: you had games over the weekend and you get still
- 0:19Speaker 1: carved out some time for some recruiting.
- 0:21Speaker 2: Where have you been the last couple of days?
- 0:24Speaker 3: Yeah, after the Lowell weekend, I went to Detroit yesterday
- 0:28Speaker 3: and drove up to Sarnia actually watched a game up
- 0:31Speaker 3: in Sarnia, Ontario, and then flew home today just to
- 0:35Speaker 3: get back to be with you, Adam at six pm.
- 0:39Speaker 2: Appreciate that. Ye, So Sarnia is that part of the CHL?
- 0:44Speaker 2: It is okay?
- 0:45Speaker 1: So how has obviously there was a rule change in
- 0:47Speaker 1: college hockey where suddenly there's this league that you're able
- 0:51Speaker 1: to recruit out of, and it seems like pretty quickly
- 0:54Speaker 1: you guys just dove right in.
- 0:56Speaker 3: Well, I think it's it's something that we certainly would
- 1:00Speaker 3: be remissed if we didn't go recruit that league and
- 1:03Speaker 3: there's some really good players there and the rule changed,
- 1:06Speaker 3: and I think over time this is going to be
- 1:10Speaker 3: beneficial for all parties because I think more kids who
- 1:15Speaker 3: wouldn't have played in the CHL in the past because
- 1:17Speaker 3: they didn't want to taint their college eligibility are going
- 1:21Speaker 3: to be willing to do it at a younger age.
- 1:23Speaker 3: And then I think we're going to be able to
- 1:24Speaker 3: get some players that will be really good college hockey players.
- 1:29Speaker 3: So in time, I think after this new collective bargaining
- 1:34Speaker 3: agreement with the NHL, there's a lot of moving pieces
- 1:36Speaker 3: at them. I don't really want to get into the
- 1:37Speaker 3: weeds on it, but it could be good for every
- 1:40Speaker 3: all parties involved.
- 1:41Speaker 1: And I guess the last question before we start to
- 1:43Speaker 1: focus on your current team, but how long would you
- 1:45Speaker 1: say that you would have advocated for this kind of
- 1:48Speaker 1: a rule change.
- 1:52Speaker 3: If the NHL gets on board here in the next
- 1:55Speaker 3: couple of years with this collective bargaining agreement, I think
- 1:57Speaker 3: it's a win for everybody. And that's the biggest piece,
- 2:01Speaker 3: because it's it's going to be really good the game.
- 2:08Speaker 3: The NHL game is marketed mostly in the United States.
- 2:11Speaker 3: I know that they're passionate in Canada, and it's crazy
- 2:15Speaker 3: in Canada how they feel about hockey, but it's marketed
- 2:18Speaker 3: here in the United States. The majority of the teams
- 2:20Speaker 3: are in the United States. The United States public and
- 2:24Speaker 3: the fan base relates to colleges, not junior teams in Canada.
- 2:31Speaker 3: Nobody in the United States knows where Medicine had Is
- 2:33Speaker 3: or Brandon or moose Jaw. But they do know Michigan,
- 2:37Speaker 3: and they know Yukon, and they know Boston College and
- 2:40Speaker 3: they know Denver. So that's something that is relatable to
- 2:45Speaker 3: the audience, I believe. And I always go back to
- 2:49Speaker 3: the example that I think when Tom Brady was playing
- 2:53Speaker 3: for the Patriots and they were playing in the Super Bowl,
- 2:56Speaker 3: the only people outside of New England rooting for the
- 2:58Speaker 3: Patriots that year because they had won so many times
- 3:01Speaker 3: were the people in Michigan. Yeah, and because he went
- 3:04Speaker 3: to Michigan. And I think that would be similar. Can
- 3:07Speaker 3: you imagine if Wayne Gretzky went to Yukon, correct, how
- 3:10Speaker 3: many people from Yukon. I watch it with Brianna Stewart
- 3:13Speaker 3: and she's playing for New York and the Yukon people
- 3:15Speaker 3: are rooting for Brianna Stewart. So It's something that I
- 3:19Speaker 3: think will really help the NHL and going forward if
- 3:23Speaker 3: there's more Canadian Junior Hockey League players playing in the
- 3:27Speaker 3: United States before they go to the NHL.
- 3:30Speaker 1: Last time we had this coaches show was three games ago,
- 3:33Speaker 1: so there are a couple of wins and one loss
- 3:35Speaker 1: to catch us up on and back. On November fifteenth,
- 3:39Speaker 1: Tascano Family Ice Forum was a mad house, a five
- 3:42Speaker 1: to four win for Yukon over the number two team
- 3:45Speaker 1: in the country. Before we get into the game, talking
- 3:47Speaker 1: to a couple of the guys, we'll hear from Kaijambaria.
- 3:49Speaker 1: Later on in the show, we'll hear from Kayden Shahan,
- 3:52Speaker 1: and they said that that environment is what they dreamed
- 3:57Speaker 1: of when they committed to playing for Yukon and playing
- 3:59Speaker 1: it that arena.
- 4:01Speaker 3: Strangely enough, I think it was the Merrimack weekend that
- 4:05Speaker 3: actually galvanized the group. I believe that it was a
- 4:10Speaker 3: tough weekend for us, and you know, while we played
- 4:13Speaker 3: pretty well at Merrimack, we didn't play well at home,
- 4:15Speaker 3: and I think that resonated with our players, and we
- 4:20Speaker 3: had a great week of practice coming out for that
- 4:22Speaker 3: Boston College game, and it was, you know, spectacular the
- 4:27Speaker 3: crowd was in it from the beginning. The energy that
- 4:30Speaker 3: the crowd created for our club was just awesome. And
- 4:35Speaker 3: they've been good all year long, Like, yeah, just about
- 4:37Speaker 3: every game we've had really good crowds, and it's something
- 4:40Speaker 3: that I want to continue to build on and create
- 4:42Speaker 3: that type of home atmosphere where it's really hard to
- 4:46Speaker 3: play when you come to stores.
- 4:48Speaker 1: So those losses before we get into the BC game,
- 4:50Speaker 1: you mentioned the weekend against Merrimac, a couple of losses
- 4:54Speaker 1: by a combined nine to three.
- 4:59Speaker 2: So obviously you've.
- 5:00Speaker 1: Got Hudson chandor John Spats, You've got your leadership group.
- 5:04Speaker 1: Did they, when you say it, galvanised the team? Sometimes
- 5:06Speaker 1: it's players taking ownership more than you taking ownership. Did
- 5:10Speaker 1: you see some some players stepping up and kind of
- 5:12Speaker 1: helping take that that charge?
- 5:15Speaker 3: Yeah, I think I'm not sure it was just the captains.
- 5:18Speaker 3: I think it was. There was a collective group of
- 5:23Speaker 3: our captains for sure, and some of our underclassmen and
- 5:27Speaker 3: not so much the freshman group, but more you know,
- 5:32Speaker 3: Joey Muldowney stepped up and with Jake Richard going out,
- 5:36Speaker 3: I mean that was a big loss for us. He
- 5:38Speaker 3: was our leading scorer. You know, I still think he's
- 5:40Speaker 3: in the top three, even though he hasn't played in
- 5:41Speaker 3: the last few games. So yeah, Uh, there was a
- 5:45Speaker 3: Ryan Tattle was instrumental and and really you know, bring
- 5:50Speaker 3: in the group together. So I thought collectively, and that's
- 5:53Speaker 3: the way it should be. It can't all be on
- 5:55Speaker 3: the captains. That becomes a big load to bear when
- 5:58Speaker 3: you're a captain if you feel like every game that
- 6:01Speaker 3: you have to be the guy to energize the group.
- 6:04Speaker 3: So I was really proud of the way the kids stepped.
- 6:07Speaker 1: Up for that game, down one nothing after the first period.
- 6:12Speaker 1: Did you have a sense of what was percolating that
- 6:16Speaker 1: this game was going to swing your way?
- 6:18Speaker 3: Well, I knew we played really well. We outshot him
- 6:20Speaker 3: twenty three to nine in the first period. Uh, played
- 6:23Speaker 3: extremely well, and I was happy to come out and
- 6:26Speaker 3: score right out of the gate. And then we scored
- 6:28Speaker 3: three in the first five minutes of that second period
- 6:30Speaker 3: and Tuscana was jumping and the guys really fed off
- 6:35Speaker 3: that energy.
- 6:36Speaker 1: Does it mean more when Hudson, I know we asked
- 6:38Speaker 1: about the captains and everybody it matters, But earlier this year,
- 6:43Speaker 1: when Hudson Chander, I got the monkey off his back.
- 6:45Speaker 1: He was a little snake bitten last year. Feels like
- 6:48Speaker 1: sometimes it means a little more when when he's the
- 6:50Speaker 1: guy that gets things going and guys buy in behind him.
- 6:54Speaker 3: Well, I think that line's been fantastic when you we
- 6:58Speaker 3: put those three together and there I'll live with probably
- 7:01Speaker 3: within as they'd say in Canada, fifteen kilometers from each other.
- 7:06Speaker 3: They live very close to each other, and they have
- 7:09Speaker 3: some synergy, no question about it. As a group, those three,
- 7:14Speaker 3: and they've been you know, really they're tough to play against.
- 7:21Speaker 3: They're a line that creates a lot of offense, but
- 7:24Speaker 3: they also are tough to play against defensively. So it's
- 7:27Speaker 3: nice for me knowing that I can match them up
- 7:30Speaker 3: against anybody against opposing team.
- 7:32Speaker 1: And again we're talking about two weekends ago. Last weekend
- 7:35Speaker 1: it was UMass Low. We're focusing first on the game
- 7:38Speaker 1: against Boston College, the number two team in the country.
- 7:43Speaker 1: For in that game, I think the college hockey world
- 7:48Speaker 1: would have seen the highlight whatever you want to call it,
- 7:51Speaker 1: of Yukon scoring a goal and then Jacob Fowler with
- 7:55Speaker 1: the game misconduct after that. That's a play where it
- 8:00Speaker 1: really a play like that is so interesting. Where a
- 8:02Speaker 1: goalie gets ejected throwing a punch gets suspended for a game,
- 8:07Speaker 1: you think, okay, that's gonna help Yukon emotionally. But I
- 8:11Speaker 1: feel like there was a lot of composure needed from
- 8:13Speaker 1: your team also just to make sure that just to
- 8:16Speaker 1: not let that kind of play distract.
- 8:19Speaker 3: The one thing I liked about that was our power
- 8:21Speaker 3: play wasn't bad because we had a five minute major
- 8:24Speaker 3: and I was thinking at the time, this is when
- 8:26Speaker 3: we have to put this game away, because you get
- 8:28Speaker 3: one goal there. Now it's all of a sudden four
- 8:30Speaker 3: to one, and that's a tough road to come back from.
- 8:33Speaker 3: But we didn't score, but it didn't ruin our momentum,
- 8:37Speaker 3: which I thought, because the power play was very effective,
- 8:40Speaker 3: and in fact, I think we got another one right
- 8:42Speaker 3: after that. So we've played on the power play for
- 8:44Speaker 3: about seven minutes after that, and.
- 8:48Speaker 2: You know it's hard for BC.
- 8:49Speaker 3: When they having to kill penalties for seven minutes to
- 8:52Speaker 3: generate offense. So I was really happy even though we
- 8:56Speaker 3: didn't score. I thought our mindset of a hacking staying
- 9:00Speaker 3: on the attack, and when that power play, those power
- 9:03Speaker 3: plays ended, we still stayed on the attack for the
- 9:05Speaker 3: rest of that period.
- 9:06Speaker 1: Yeah, just from a statistical perspective, in that game, you
- 9:09Speaker 1: score five goals, but it was zero for four on
- 9:12Speaker 1: the power play, even though you generated.
- 9:13Speaker 2: Fourteen shots on the power play.
- 9:15Speaker 1: So it just feels like another one of those instances
- 9:20Speaker 1: where the team could have found a way to let
- 9:24Speaker 1: that deflate them, and yet they still kept pushing.
- 9:27Speaker 3: Yeah, no, it was. It was a good game from
- 9:29Speaker 3: start to finish.
- 9:30Speaker 1: Uh.
- 9:31Speaker 3: You know, we had a couple unfortunate bounces. I think
- 9:33Speaker 3: that got PC a little bit back in the game.
- 9:37Speaker 3: And listen, it was it was tough because I mean,
- 9:41Speaker 3: Tommy Heeney is you know, he hasn't played a lot
- 9:44Speaker 3: of hockey at the college level, and he's got to
- 9:47Speaker 3: step in totally cold in the third period because time
- 9:51Speaker 3: usually goes out with a you know, lower body injury.
- 9:54Speaker 3: That's a hard position to be put in, you know,
- 9:57Speaker 3: especially when the first shot goes in. But he hung
- 9:59Speaker 3: in there and did an awesome job helping us win
- 10:04Speaker 3: that game.
- 10:05Speaker 1: Thomas Heeney minutes against Boston University and Boston College not
- 10:09Speaker 1: an easy ask for him in his first couple of
- 10:11Speaker 1: college outings.
- 10:13Speaker 2: We'll dive into last weekend.
- 10:14Speaker 1: You masked Lowell, a couple of games against the river Hawks,
- 10:17Speaker 1: a split up at the song Is Center, and then
- 10:19Speaker 1: we will chat with Kai Jamborea and Kayden Shahan as
- 10:23Speaker 1: we roll on here.
- 10:23Speaker 2: Tonight.
- 10:24Speaker 1: After this, it's pregame between Yukon and Oregon State. Bob
- 10:28Speaker 1: Joyce down and Nasau and the Bahamas. Poor Pop. He
- 10:31Speaker 1: will get us started at seven o'clock Eastern. I'm Adam Jardino.
- 10:35Speaker 1: We are live from Bear's Smokehouse Barbecue here in Hartford.
- 10:39Speaker 2: This is Yukon men's ice hockey from Learfield
