- 0:03SPEAKER_00: This is The Mostly Football Show, a uniquely Australian take on the NFL and all things in the world of sport.
- 0:12SPEAKER_00: Over to you, Pete.
- 0:17SPEAKER_00: Good morning, good afternoon, good evening, wherever you are in the wild world, and welcome to the first ever reaction show from The Mostly Football Show.
- 0:26SPEAKER_00: It's the original OG, Pete here on his own, with Matt and KG sitting in the medical tent, crying foul.
- 0:35SPEAKER_00: Probably Matt's there because he's been so big on the Rams and after watching them get destroyed by the 49ers.
- 0:40SPEAKER_00: Today he's probably wondering why he was so confident that he thinks they will win the Super Bowl.
- 0:46SPEAKER_00: It's been a historic day here in Australia with the first ever NFL regular season game played here.
- 0:52SPEAKER_00: I say played, it was played by one team, the 49ers, who absolutely took the Rams to the cleaners over the course of the three hours of the game this morning into the early afternoon.
- 1:04SPEAKER_00: It's going to be listed probably as a game of two preparations.
- 1:08SPEAKER_00: The 49ers have been here a week, acclimatized, got used to the town, got used to the city, got used to the G, as everyone was calling it.
- 1:18SPEAKER_00: Whereas the Rams turned up and went home.
- 1:21SPEAKER_00: And realistically will probably spend as much time in the air as they did in Australia here.
- 1:27SPEAKER_00: So were they acclimatised?
- 1:28SPEAKER_00: Did they play like they had jet lag?
- 1:31SPEAKER_00: Absolutely they did.
- 1:33SPEAKER_00: They had a 7-3 lead early on, but after that, 24 unanswered points from the 49ers meant they went home with their tails firmly between their legs after 27 cephing thrashing.
- 1:45SPEAKER_00: And nothing summed it up more than a Matthew Stafford quarterback sneak on fourth and goal with inches to go where he failed to get in the third time in two seasons.
- 1:56SPEAKER_00: He has failed a quarterback sneak.
- 1:59SPEAKER_00: That ball was picked up by the 49ers, and 99 yards later they scored a touchdown to take a more than a two-score lead.
- 2:08SPEAKER_00: Unbelievable performance by Brock Purdy, Christian McCaffrey, and Mike Evans.
- 2:14SPEAKER_00: My goodness, in the first half was he the outstanding player.
- 2:17SPEAKER_00: Every time they got to a third down, third and short, he was there.
- 2:21SPEAKER_00: He was the go-to guy for Purdy, and he really stood up.
- 2:25SPEAKER_00: What a great acquisition for them.
- 2:26SPEAKER_00: He's going to make a huge difference.
- 2:28SPEAKER_00: And what a great marker for the forty niners.
- 2:31SPEAKER_00: What a huge marker to put down.
- 2:33SPEAKER_00: This wasn't just, you know, a an eek past the Super Bowl favourites.
- 2:38SPEAKER_00: This was a destruction of them.
- 2:41SPEAKER_00: Matthew Stafford was held to 155 yards.
- 2:45SPEAKER_00: The Rams were held to seven points.
- 2:47SPEAKER_00: It's eighty-four games since they were held to less than ten points.
- 2:52SPEAKER_00: Ironically, another game against the forty niners.
- 2:56SPEAKER_00: Their two big wide receiver groups, Puka, Nakua and Devonny Adams, only combined for a hundred yards.
- 3:03SPEAKER_00: He just could not get them the ball.
- 3:05SPEAKER_00: He was under throwing, he was overthrowing.
- 3:07SPEAKER_00: He really did not look like he wanted to be out there today.
- 3:11SPEAKER_00: It was more like a preseason game for Matthew Stafford.
- 3:13SPEAKER_00: He looked like someone who was running out, was only going to play the first few downs, and that was going to be it.
- 3:19SPEAKER_00: He had no jail with his receivers.
- 3:21SPEAKER_00: They couldn't really get the running game going until the very end, but that only happened when the game was already gone and 27-7.
- 3:28SPEAKER_00: They ran out the clock.
- 3:29SPEAKER_00: They replaced Stafford in late in the fourth quarter with a the beautifully named Stetson Bennett.
- 3:36SPEAKER_00: And the last three minutes was just them running up the middle and the 49ers quite happy to let them do it because they knew they got it in the bag.
- 3:44SPEAKER_00: A huge statement win from the 49ers.
- 3:47SPEAKER_00: Carl Shanahan will be rubbing his hands with glee about the way he has outcoached the Rams today.
- 3:55SPEAKER_00: He knew their number, he knew how to attack them offensively, he knew how to stop them defensively.
- 4:02SPEAKER_00: It's the start of the second half.
- 4:03SPEAKER_00: He smashed them with the running game, Christian McCaffrey came out and just ran straight up the middle, and they couldn't stop him.
- 4:11SPEAKER_00: The Rams have invested so heavily in their defence in the offseason with Marles Garrett and Trent McDuffie coming over.
- 4:18SPEAKER_00: McDuffie played all, but Miles Garrett, not one tackle, didn't get his hands on the quarterback once.
- 4:25SPEAKER_00: And didn't even look like he could.
- 4:28SPEAKER_00: And I know there were there weren't many sacks in the game, but my goodness, uh they bought him here to be able to scare defenses.
- 4:36SPEAKER_00: And the questions are going to be asked is have they bought superstars but not built a team?
- 4:41SPEAKER_00: Because they didn't look like they were ever going to be capable of stopping the forty nine from scoring a lot of points.
- 4:47SPEAKER_00: The Rams are going to definitely be questioning themselves on their way back, not just about their preparation, but probably about their whole preseason preparation, because they just looked like a team who wasn't ready to play today.
- 5:00SPEAKER_00: Whereas the Forty Niners, they came to make a statement, and boy did they make it.
- 5:05SPEAKER_00: Brock Purdy, three touchdowns, two hundred and five yards.
- 5:08SPEAKER_00: Yes, he threw an interception, so did Matthew Stafford.
- 5:11SPEAKER_00: They traded interceptions in the first half.
- 5:13SPEAKER_00: But Brock Purdy looked like he marshalled that team.
- 5:16SPEAKER_00: He knew when to throw, they knew when to run, he knew when to call all the bulls.
- 5:21SPEAKER_00: If they can keep him fit this year, and uh Kerry's gonna thank me for saying this as well, I think the Forty Nines have a real shot at the NFC Championships.
- 5:32SPEAKER_00: They looked that good.
- 5:33SPEAKER_00: Now, we've only got two games to go on.
- 5:36SPEAKER_00: Seattle uh New England game was not great, uh probably hampered a little bit by Sam Darnold going out after the first drive, but Seattle found a way to win.
- 5:46SPEAKER_00: But I think the similarities between New England and San Francisco were that their coaches had adjusted.
- 5:55SPEAKER_00: They had adjusted their game plan to play the teams they were against, and they'd done it really effectively.
- 6:00SPEAKER_00: Huge difference between the New England defense from the Super Bowl to the New England defense against Seattle yesterday, and the 49ers are the same, they adjusted, they stopped the Rams from playing.
- 6:14SPEAKER_00: And when Matthew Stafford's not on form and not hitting his targets, it's gonna be a long season for the Rams.
- 6:21SPEAKER_00: Now don't get me wrong, they are still a Super Bowl contender.
- 6:26SPEAKER_00: They are still going to be in the playoffs.
- 6:30SPEAKER_00: But it doesn't feel like they're gonna be the thirteen and four or even twelve and five team that we thought they might be.
- 6:37SPEAKER_00: They could even go down as low as ten and seven.
- 6:39SPEAKER_00: Now they've got time to adjust.
- 6:42SPEAKER_00: The next game I think is Monday night football next week, and so they have got time to adjust, but boy will they be looking hard at themselves, or they should be looking hard at themselves after the game they played.
- 6:52SPEAKER_00: Whereas the forty niners, I'm not sure if they got on to playing straight out Australia, they might want to be enjoying Melbourne tonight because they were so good.
- 7:01SPEAKER_00: So good.
- 7:02SPEAKER_00: Uh I can't again explain it how good Mike Evans was in the first half.
- 7:07SPEAKER_00: And then when McCaffrey came out in the second half and just ran up the guts of the the Rams defence, y you probably started knewing this was only going to end in one way.
- 7:19SPEAKER_00: And and so it turned out.
- 7:21SPEAKER_00: Great spectacle for Australia.
- 7:23SPEAKER_00: The MCT looked so good today, so good.
- 7:27SPEAKER_00: Um there'll be a few people questioning the distance you are away from the pitch and what kind of view you got if you're in the front row seats.
- 7:34SPEAKER_00: But the atmosphere felt amazing from watching it on the tell.
- 7:38SPEAKER_00: Halftime show was really good, all the pre-game ceremonies were awesome.
- 7:44SPEAKER_00: Wasn't a big fan of the Netflix coverage, but uh you probably would have guessed that if you've heard me over the last couple of weeks on the podcast itself.
- 7:51SPEAKER_00: I think Netflix should stay in their lane, get away from sports, and stick to what they do best.
- 7:57SPEAKER_00: However, they did have Clay Matthews on there, so I do have to, you know, take that one with a pinch of salt.
- 8:02SPEAKER_00: So who's come out best from this?
- 8:06SPEAKER_00: Well, definitely Brock Purdy.
- 8:08SPEAKER_00: Definitely the Forty Niners.
- 8:10SPEAKER_00: If I I uh yeah, look, I can't say enough, and uh it's hard enough to talk on my own for ten minutes, right, which we're coming close to now.
- 8:18SPEAKER_00: But I cannot say enough about how well the 49ers played.
- 8:22SPEAKER_00: It was a pleasure to watch them play, and they've given a blueprint to every team who wants to take on the Rams this year about how to go about beating them.
- 8:34SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 8:35SPEAKER_00: Let's calm down.
- 8:36SPEAKER_00: It's the first game of the season.
- 8:38SPEAKER_00: Felt like a pre-season game for the Rams, felt like a regular season game for the 49ers.
- 8:44SPEAKER_00: We've got a whole season ahead of us, yet whole twists and turns, whole lot of work to go through.
- 8:52SPEAKER_00: But I think anyone in the NFC who thought the Rams were gonna walk away with this year are gonna start looking at that and go, you know what?
- 9:00SPEAKER_00: They're beatable.
- 9:02SPEAKER_00: They're not as tough as what we thought.
- 9:07SPEAKER_00: And that's it, really.
- 9:09SPEAKER_00: That's ten minutes, or close to ten minutes of me summing up my experience of watching the game today.
- 9:14SPEAKER_00: I thoroughly enjoyed it, not too many penalties, no controversial calls.
- 9:19SPEAKER_00: But it was a great game of American football to showcase the Australian public.
- 9:26SPEAKER_00: I hope they come back next year.
- 9:28SPEAKER_00: If it's the Rams again, I hope they come back with a different mindset and really spend time acclimatising because it really did feel like, as I said at the start, their preparation is what let them down.
- 9:43SPEAKER_00: I hope you've enjoyed this reaction show.
- 9:45SPEAKER_00: I'd love to do a few more uh through the year, work permitting, um, on Monday night footballs or or or Sunday night football or whichever I can find time to do, or we can find time to do.
- 9:55SPEAKER_00: I think it's a great way of letting you know we do watch the games uh and we do have passionate feelings about them, even when they're not the Packers, the Bears, or the Cowboys.
- 10:06SPEAKER_00: I'll take my leave for now.
- 10:08SPEAKER_00: I hope to hear you uh or I hope you can hear me all again on Tuesday when Matt and Kakey will be back with me, and we will definitely go through this game in a little bit more detail, along with all the early season games for you and your teams.
- 10:24SPEAKER_00: So good luck to your teams if they haven't played already.
- 10:26SPEAKER_00: Well done to your teams if you support the Seahawks or the 49ers.
- 10:30SPEAKER_00: I'll catch up with you on Tuesday.
- 10:32SPEAKER_00: Ta ta for now.
