Transcript
- 0:12Hello friends, it's Shawn here. It's Wednesday.
- 0:15It is the 21st of February. That's right.
- 0:19I know what the date is today. Aren't you glad?
- 0:22Oh dear. Yes, yes, today is the 21st.
- 0:25In fact, today it means that we are one week into the season of
- 0:29Lent. I wonder how you're going with
- 0:31Lent. Have you given something up?
- 0:34Are you finding that challenging?
- 0:37Whatever it is that your Lent is looking like, this is the time
- 0:42when we solemnly walk toward the cross, so aware of everything
- 0:47that Jesus gives up entirely out of his love for us and His
- 0:52desire to rescue us to himself. So yes, this is a sombre time as
- 0:58we move toward celebrating Easter.
- 1:01But that is not what our readings are about at the
- 1:04moment. Our readings are about
- 1:06celebrating everything that Christ has done for us through
- 1:10his death and resurrection. And today is no different.
- 1:14Paul will write about the new life that we have in Christ and
- 1:18what a difference that makes for us, even in simple, practical
- 1:22things like how we live at home with our families.
- 1:25So let us read this together, friends.
- 1:27Let us read together. Colossians Chapter 3.
- 1:40Since you have been raised to new life with Christ, set your
- 1:44sights on the realities of heaven, where Christ sits in the
- 1:48place of honour at God's right hand.
- 1:52Think about the things of heaven, not the things of earth.
- 1:55For you died to this life, and your real life is hidden with
- 2:00Christ in God. And when Christ, who is your
- 2:04life, is revealed to the whole world, he will share in all his
- 2:10glory. So put to death, the sinful
- 2:14earthly things lurking within you have nothing to do with
- 2:17sexual immorality, impurity, lust, and evil desires.
- 2:22Don't be greedy, for a greedy person is an idolater
- 2:27worshipping the things of this world.
- 2:30Because of these sins, the anger of God is coming.
- 2:34You used to do these things when your life was still part of this
- 2:37world, but now is the time to get rid of anger, rage,
- 2:41malicious behaviour, slander and dirty language.
- 2:45Don't lie to each other, for you've stripped off your old
- 2:49sinful nature and all its wicked deeds.
- 2:53Put on your new nature and be renewed as you learn to know
- 2:57your Creator and become like Him In this new life.
- 3:02It doesn't matter if you are a Jew or a Gentile, circumcised or
- 3:06uncircumcised, barbaric, uncivilised, slave or free.
- 3:11Christ is all that matters, and He lives in all of us.
- 3:17Since God chose you to be the holy people He loves, you must
- 3:22clothe yourselves with tender hearted mercy, kindness,
- 3:28humility, gentleness, and patience.
- 3:32Make allowances for each other's faults and forgive anyone who
- 3:36offends you. Remember the Lord forgave you,
- 3:40so you must forgive others. Above all, clothe yourselves
- 3:46with love, which binds us all together in perfect harmony, and
- 3:52let the peace that comes from Christ rule in your hearts.
- 3:57For as members of one body you were called to live in peace and
- 4:01always be thankful. Let the message about Christ in
- 4:06all its richness fill your lives, Teach and counsel each
- 4:11other with all the wisdom he gives, sings psalms and hymns
- 4:15and spiritual songs to God with thankful hearts.
- 4:19And whatever you do or say, do it as a representative of the
- 4:23Lord Jesus, giving thanks through him to God.
- 4:27The Father wives, submit to your husbands as is fitting for those
- 4:34who belong to the Lord. And husbands, love your wives
- 4:38and never treat them harshly. Children, always obey your
- 4:44parents, for this pleases the Lord.
- 4:46Fathers, do not aggravate your children or they will become
- 4:50discouraged. Slaves, obey your earthly
- 4:55masters in everything you do. Try to please them all the time,
- 4:59not just when they are watching you.
- 5:01Serve them sincerely because of your reverent fear of the Lord.
- 5:06Work willingly at whatever you do, as though you were working
- 5:09for the Lord rather than for people.
- 5:13Remember that the Lord will give you an inheritance as your
- 5:16reward, and that the master you are serving is Christ.
- 5:22But if you do what is wrong, you will be paid back for the wrong
- 5:26you have done for God has no favourites.
- 5:39Oh Lord, thank you for the simplicity of the game plan that
- 5:43you have for us. It's not complicated.
- 5:46You just ask us to love each other with the love that you
- 5:50have given us, and to see all of our brothers and sisters here as
- 5:57your beloved children. That we would do the most menial
- 6:02tasks as though doing them for you.
- 6:07Transform our hearts. Give us that lens for us to look
- 6:12through, that we would see everything in your light as
- 6:16worshipped to you, so that we can build up your Kingdom and
- 6:21share your incredible love with all of those around us.
- 6:25You are spectacular and we adore you and we love you.
- 6:32Fill us with your love and we ask this in your name.
- 6:37Jesus, come in.
