- 0:07The New York Yankees faced the Boston Red Sox for a Sunday afternoon game at Fenway Park on Sunday, July 4th, 1965.
- 0:15The Red Sox were an average team, never accomplishing any recent postseason play and not finishing over 500 in nearly a decade.
- 0:22New York was coming off five consecutive World Series appearances, including a loss to the Cardinals in 1964.
- 0:29The team was struggling under new manager Johnny Keene, who took over for the Yanks after the firing of Yogi Berra.
- 0:35This audio recording is from the New York Radio broadcast featuring announcers Fibra Zutto and Joe Gargiola.
- 1:05The right-hander delivers to Richardson.
- 1:07The first pitch is in high in the air.
- 1:09This could be a repeat of yesterday, and it's off the wall, way up there.
- 1:13Bobby has to stop with a long single.
- 1:15Lee Thomas made a fine recovery, and we almost had a repeat of a situation that developed yesterday
- 1:23when Jim Lombard threw that six to Richardson and started to fall again, and he splashed it into the screen for a home run.
- 1:31This one, though, becomes a long single.
- 1:37That had to man fuzzing air send way far.
- 1:45Mambo catch, first pitch of the ballgame, off the wall for a single.
- 1:49Now here's Tony Kubek.
- 1:52Kubek takes the ball.
- 1:55Richardson batting at 275.
- 1:57Boy, he's had a hot bat.
- 1:59One home run, 24 RBI.
- 2:01He's at first base.
- 2:02Here's Tony Kubek hitting a 204 with two homers and 21 RBI.
- 2:07The right-hander against the left-hander.
- 2:10Mambo catch, the right-hand pitcher, Kubek batting left-handed, as he does always.
- 2:14Hits the first pitch, fouls it, and it's there to feel for a face-hit.
- 2:17And Pia has it, and Richardson has got to hold his second.
- 2:20That ball is hit so hard to make it impossible for Bobby to move the dirt.
- 2:26So three pitchers in the ballgame.
- 2:29The Yankees have runners at first, but second.
- 2:31Nobody out in the batter will be Tommy Tretch.
- 2:36Well, Reg, we had quite a free game, Joe, with Mel Farnell and Keith Ruggles who played here.
- 2:42Fenway Park about that left field wall, and Bobby Richardson, that's his first time around.
- 2:47Did they have any significant remarks?
- 2:50Yes, Jerry, I think you heard them all.
- 2:51One, the pitchers in this ball.
- 2:53The pitchers down, and of course Mambo could have gotten up high on this one.
- 2:57Yeah, he did, and Bobby got hit up high.
- 3:01Okay, here's Tommy Tretch batting at 282, 12 home runs, 36 RBI's,
- 3:05at least the Yankees in just about every offensive department.
- 3:09The pitch to Tretch is an attempt to cross it foul back on the screen strike one.
- 3:14Tom was not really funing to sacrifice the runners along.
- 3:17He was trying to beat out a hit.
- 3:19Now, Trichetti has something to flag to Tretch.
- 3:25Tretch won the count to Tommy.
- 3:28Elton Howard in the on deck circle.
- 3:32Ball game just getting underway.
- 3:34First two Yankees, Richardson and Kubek, on with Pringle.
- 3:38Mambo gets set.
- 3:39Here's the pitch to Tretch.
- 3:40This one is foul back on the screen strike two.
- 3:45Tretch has a five game hitting streak on the line.
- 3:47Kubek came in at the ball game with a six game streak.
- 3:50Now he's run out to seven.
- 3:52Boyer leads the Yankees in that department with ten.
- 3:55The three Yankees are moving along with hot bass.
- 3:58In fact, the Yankees generally here in this series have picked up the hitting tremendously.
- 4:04Fifteen runs the first night, six yesterday.
- 4:12Tretch to Tretch hitter batting left handed.
- 4:14The runners lead off. The pitch to Tommy is this high in the air.
- 4:17It's a fairly shallow center coming on to Mancia.
- 4:19And on the run he catches him on a tight play.
- 4:23On the dead run, about T-high, Mancia takes one away from Tommy Tretch.
- 4:30That ball for a moment looked like it might drop.
- 4:37There's one away and now coming on Ellie Howard.
- 4:46Combo hit against the Yankees is one and one this year.
- 4:50She's 15 and nine.
- 4:51Check that, 15 and 12 lifetime.
- 4:54One of the two pitchers to have a lifetime edge on the Yankee ball club.
- 5:00Elston Howard batting at 2.15.
- 5:02Three home runs.
- 5:03Seventeen RBI.
- 5:04He's had two in the last two days, home runs that is.
- 5:08Ellie takes high and outside.
- 5:10It's ball one.
- 5:13One away, Bobby Richardson at second, Tony Kubek at first.
- 5:17Defensively, Florida Red Sox, Tillman is catching.
- 5:20Tony Horton at first, Chuck Schilling at second, Ed Boussou at short,
- 5:24Dalton Jones at third in the outfield, Lee Thomas on left, Mancia in center,
- 5:29and Conigliaro in right.
- 5:32A mambo catch set.
- 5:34Here's the next one to Howard.
- 5:35In there, strike call one and one.
- 5:38Red Sox having a difficult time with their outfield.
- 5:43Yastrinsky out of the starting lineup, the best hitter, and the regular left fielder.
- 5:49And Lenny Green injured.
- 5:51Gary Geiger with broken bones in his hands also out.
- 5:56They've been crippled in the outfield as of right now.
- 5:59Here's the next pitch to Howard, filed back on the screen, one ball, two strikes.
- 6:10Right now, Billy Herman, manager of the Red Sox, has had to play as regular first baseman,
- 6:15Lee Thomas in left, and as regular second baseman, Mancia in center.
- 6:23One ball, two strikes, Ellie Howard, Richardson at Kubek, moving off the bases.
- 6:28A pitch by Mambo Kess.
- 6:29There's a high drive.
- 6:30It's gonna feel, not cheap.
- 6:32Mancia with the glasses down, gets under it easily, and takes it.
- 6:36Bobby tags up just to draw the throw, and then goes back to second base.
- 6:42Those two down as the runners hold at first and second, and now here's Joe Pepitone.
- 6:48Pepitone hitting a 2.67.
- 6:50Eight home runs and 34 RBI.
- 6:53Now there's an exchange of baseballs.
- 7:08Pepitone waits for the plate on fire, John Wright, to check it out,
- 7:12and then it flips it back to Bill Montboquet.
- 7:17Well, you've got a definite Boston flavor here in our old-timers' acceptances,
- 7:24which we'll give to you in just a moment.
- 7:25We'll give it to you right now while Montboquet gets ready.
- 7:27Joe Cronin, Bobby Dore, and Jimmy Fox have all accepted invitations for the old-timers' day,
- 7:32July the 31st, at the stadium.
- 7:36Pepitone takes a fastball outside and it's ball one.
- 7:39Don't forget, Saturday, July the 31st, old-timers' day at the stadium,
- 7:43and the opposition, the Cleveland Indians, hottest ball club in either league right now.
- 7:49They've won 18 of 22.
- 7:52Bill Cronin, who is the sporting news player of the year in 1930,
- 7:55Bobby Dore, the sporting news player of the year in 44,
- 7:58and Jimmy Fox, the MVC in 32, 33, and 38.
- 8:04Well, he's got a few statistics besides that, batting camp in 33 and 38.
- 8:09Montboquet to Pepitone, a drive down the right-field line, base hit, it's in there.
- 8:13Here comes Richardson, two-backs, coming around third,
- 8:17but is being held up by Frank Spassetti and going into second base at Pepitone.
- 8:23So the Yankees have a one-to-nothing lead.
- 8:27Pepitone a double down the right-field line, and that's RBI number 35 for Joe.
- 8:33One behind the team leader, Tommy Tresch.
- 8:41Third hit off Montboquet.
- 8:45Yankees one, Red Sox nothing, top of the first.
- 8:51Dexter Lopez, sixth batter in the Yankees lineup coming on,
- 8:56batting at 234 with four homers and 17 RBI.
- 9:01Now Montboquet wants another base ball.
- 9:04Oh, the switch is made.
- 9:08Pepitone a second base, Kubek is third, two-outs, top of the first.
- 9:14Yankees one, Red Sox nothing.
- 9:19Bill Montboquet into his windup now.
- 9:22The pitch to Hector is a strike called on the outside corner.
- 9:27Yankees will be heading for Detroit right after the ball game.
- 9:33Got a double header there tomorrow.
- 9:36They'll be there four days. They've got five ball games in four days,
- 9:40and then on to Minnesota for a weekend set, and then the All-Star break.
- 9:45So ten big ball games facing the Yankees between now and the All-Star break.
- 9:50One strike pitch to Hector fouled off, and the count is no balls, two strikes.
- 9:57Well, that ball just shot back there.
- 10:01They have the stand fairly low here and close to the playing field,
- 10:05so that foul balls, when they go in there, they go in in a hurry.
- 10:09And I do not advise spectators sitting in the lower areas to take their eye off the ball.
- 10:18Beautiful day, July the 4th, 1965.
- 10:23The next one to Hector Lopez on the ground in the hole, base hit.
- 10:27Two seconds in, here comes Steppes on heel score, and the Yankees are ahead three to nothing.
- 10:38Hector Lopez, a two RBI single, puts the Yankees out front three to nothing.
- 10:52Fourth hit off Bill Mongolket.
- 10:55The batter now, Roger Rapose, hitting a 273.
- 10:59He's three for 11.
- 11:01Two home runs and six RBI.
- 11:05And the rest are open.
- 11:08Is in action right now as Mongolket running into trouble here on the top of the first.
- 11:15Jay Ritchie, right-hander, he's made the last two ball games.
- 11:24Well, Mongolket in big trouble here on the first inning.
- 11:30Roger Rapose.
- 11:32He was 0 for 4 yesterday.
- 11:35Here's the pitch to Roger.
- 11:36Check, swing, fly into the stands, out of play, strike one.
- 11:43Roger literally carried the Yankees in that ball game here on Friday night when he drove in four runs.
- 11:52Clark's the first rally, and a three-run homer wound it up.
- 11:56The Yankees way out front at eight to nothing, and then they went on to get eight more.
- 12:00All right, Hector moving off first.
- 12:02Here's the next pitch to Rapose.
- 12:03It's in there for a strike.
- 12:04No ball, two strikes.
- 12:07Rapose just recently called up from Toledo where he's batting an even 300, as the talentless recall.
- 12:1963 inches, 195 pounds, hails from the state of Washington.
- 12:23Where is the number 43 on his uniform?
- 12:27Straight up stands, the pitch by Mongolket, backs him off the plate.
- 12:31Ball one, strike two.
- 12:34Royer in the on-deck circle.
- 12:36They do not play Rapose to pull right now.
- 12:38Manchia in center, just a shade to the right of Beckenbate.
- 12:45Dalton Jones at third has moved in even with the bag and gives Rapose about 15 feet of the line.
- 12:53Okay, Mongolket again gets the size of Tillman.
- 12:56That delivers, and Rapose swings and misses, strike three.
- 13:00First strikeout for Mongolket, and for the Yankees in the first inning, three runs on four hits, one man left.
- 13:08Score after a half inning of play, the Yankees three, Red Sox coming to bat.
- 13:18Okay, we move into the bottom of the first inning, Jim Bouton on the mound for the Yankees.
- 13:22Yankees lead three to nothing, so Bouton has been presented with a nice cushion.
- 13:30And the only thing we've got going right now in either the American or the National,
- 13:35Detroit failed to score in the top of the first inning, playing the Senators,
- 13:39and Cincinnati failed to score in the top of the first, playing the Phillies.
- 13:47The Phillies had a little extracurricular activity over there the other day.
- 13:52Here's the first batter facing Bouton, Chuck Dilling.
- 13:58Second baseman batting at 292, three home runs and seven RBI.
- 14:04Bouton next pitch off, no ball, two strikes.
- 14:10Yesterday in Philadelphia, Frank Thomas and Richie Allen, absolutely the hitter,
- 14:18ended up in a brawl before the game started.
- 14:21So those things happen in the heat of battle sometimes.
- 14:27All right, Bouton into the line-up, the pitch to Dilling is a curve that's low and it's ball one.
- 14:32Now the wind seems to have shifted a little bit toward that left field wall out there,
- 14:38blowing in as the game started.
- 14:40Bouton again, the one-two pitch, there's a drive to right field, high in the air.
- 14:44Hector Lopez moving toward the line, got it going, one hand hit.
- 14:48The wind stopped that ball, and Hector almost let it get away, but finally caught up to it.
- 14:54That ball was swiping and was being held up by the wind.
- 15:00So there's one out.
- 15:02Now they'll bring up Dalton Jones.
- 15:04Now the Red Sox have got some pretty young ball players in the line-up today.
- 15:08Dalton Jones is 21, he's playing third.
- 15:10Tony Horton is 20, he's a third.
- 15:13And Canegliaro, the right fielder, is only 20.
- 15:16There's the first pitch by Bouton to the left hander hitting Dalton Jones, it's low at ball one.
- 15:22Jones starting at 292.
- 15:27There's the drive to right field, hard hit.
- 15:29Lopez backs up this time and takes it two down.
- 15:40Tony Horton now, 20-year-old right hand hitter, power hitter.
- 15:46Boy, he's a big guy.
- 15:48He's got the chubby cheek.
- 16:06Two outs, nobody on, Bouton ready, delivers a curve that's in there to Tony Horton, strike one.
- 16:12Bouton is really moving right along.
- 16:17That's taken any time, gets the time from Howard.
- 16:19Here's the next run, the big change up outside, one and one.
- 16:34The one strikes fifth to Horton, uh-oh, the high drive, that's curving fast.
- 16:38Oh, wicked, over that left field fence, and he hit it.
- 16:45Boy, he's got a hold of that one and drove it foul about 20 feet over the fence.
- 16:51Now Bouton ready, one ball, two strikes, it's Tony Horton, two outs, nobody on.
- 16:55The pitch, the change up is low, two and two to count.
- 16:59Two balls, two strikes, two outs, nobody on.
- 17:02Bottom of the first, Yankees three, red shots nothing.
- 17:11Horton batting at 271, he's got one home run and six RBI's.
- 17:15There's the drive, the left, that ball should make the wall, it does, well up there.
- 17:20Dredge grabs it and Horton is held to a single.
- 17:31So Tony Horton, that's used the left field wall for a base hit, first get off about.
- 17:37And now here's Felix Mantia, Mantia the American League starting second baseman in the All-Star Game, batting at 324.
- 17:47Well ball, he leads the American League in RBI's with 58.
- 17:56Bouton sets, delivers and it's outside, ball one.
- 18:12Bouton again sets, Dex Horton to pitch to Mantia, ball two, two and oh to count.
- 18:35Now Jim takes his time just a little bit, sets, delivers and it's outside, three and oh to count to Mantia.
- 19:02Bouton again to Mantia, ball four and he walks them.
- 19:09The red shot, runners at first and second with two out of the batter now is Lee Thomas.
- 19:14Thomas hitting at 273, 13 homers, 38 RBI's.
- 19:23A single by Horton, a walk by Mantia, red box with runners at first and second.
- 19:30Lee Thomas the batter, a left-handed hitter against the right-handed pitching Jim Bouton.
- 19:36Yanks leads three to nothing, here's Bouton's first pitch, it's a curve in there strike one, bottom of the first inning.
- 19:48Well the National League came up with this All-Star starting lineup today.
- 19:53Those of you who may not have seen it will give it to you, just hold on.
- 19:59Bouton sets again, the runners move off to pitch to Thomas, a loud foul way down the right field line, strike two.
- 20:08Starting lineup for the National League, game to be played in Minnesota on July the 13th.
- 20:14Corey is the catcher from the Braves.
- 20:16Banks of the Cubs is at first, Rose of Cincinnati at second, Wills of the Dodgers at short, Alan of the Phillies at third.
- 20:24In the outfield, Aaron Mays and Stargell, Aaron of the Braves, Mays of the Giants, Stargell of the Pirates.
- 20:35All right, Bouton, two strike pitch, back Thomas off the plate, one ball, two strikes.
- 20:41Lee Thomas and Lou Clinton were exchanged even ups between the Angels and the Red Sox the middle of last year.
- 20:49And Thomas has been a real beauty for the Red Sox ever since.
- 20:54He's done a whale of a job.
- 21:02Bouton ready to pitch, the big change up is slapped into left center, long run for repose and stretch.
- 21:09And nobody can get it, this by Bouton.
- 21:12Two runs to go to score, here comes Mancia.
- 21:16And Thomas is in with a looping double to left center.
- 21:28Let me recap that a minute for you.
- 21:30That ball is just a looping fly ball in the gap in left center.
- 21:35Repose on the run and stretch on the run.
- 21:38Both went for it, both stretched for it, neither got to it, and the ball bounced between the both of them toward the wall.
- 21:45That allowed Mancia to come all the way from first to score.
- 21:49So it's the Yankees three, the Red Sox two, and here's Kanigle L., who takes the strike.
- 21:55Tony C., batting at 260, 15 homers, 36 RVIs, and that is RVI number 39 and 40 for Lee Thomas.
- 22:09A slow hopper down the third base side foul.
- 22:12No balls, two strikes, two outs.
- 22:17Oh, we got one going.
- 22:23Did Ronald have anything to say as far as the hitting was concerned about that wall, Rick?
- 22:28It might help a batter up here.
- 22:30Well, Jerry, you have a great deal of sense.
- 22:32So far now, in fact, Arm Forces Radio very often takes the soundtracks from our pre and postgame shows.
- 22:39I'm sure they'll take this because there was so much good talk about that wall.
- 22:43We'll try and get some of it in later.
- 22:45Okay.
- 22:47Two strikes to count to Tony C., Thomas at second base, a fast ball inside as Kanigle L. bounces out of the way.
- 22:54It's one and two.
- 23:00For many years, that's been a big story here in Fenway Park.
- 23:03The big green monster at left field had a big art of one for sure straight on a few weeks ago.
- 23:12Bits to Tony C. is blowing in the dirt.
- 23:15Two and two to count. Two balls, two strikes, two outs.
- 23:18Yanks three, Red Sox two.
- 23:30Broughton again ready.
- 23:34That delivers foul behind the plate.
- 23:37John remains at two and two.
- 23:40Al Reneth is throwing in the Yankee bullpen.
- 23:44Yankees came up with three runs in the first on Bill Mamboquette.
- 23:51Now the Red Sox countered with two off Jim Bouton.
- 24:08Bouton now getting the sign from Elton Howard.
- 24:11Thomas moving off second.
- 24:13The pitch to Kanigle L.
- 24:15The big green deputy swings a bit to strike three.
- 24:19He went after that big balloon.
- 24:21So for the Red Sox, they're in the bottom of the first two runs.
- 24:25Two hits, one left.
- 24:27And the score after one full inning of play, Yankees three, Red Sox two.
- 24:35Devils real peace, that aspires long good.
- 24:40Devils real peace, that aspires longer.
- 24:45Devils real peace, that aspires longer.
- 24:50But that's the pace you can get.
- 24:54You get tobacco taste.
- 24:57Tobacco taste.
- 24:58So rich and rare.
- 24:59So rich and rare.
- 25:01A real taste.
- 25:02A real taste.
- 25:03That's really there.
- 25:05You get no bad, no fancy stuff.
- 25:08Real flavor with every bump.
- 25:11Tobacco taste.
- 25:12So rich and rare.
- 25:14A real taste.
- 25:15That's really there.
- 25:17And that tobacco makes the best smoke.
- 25:19They get with Camo and fly real slow.
- 25:22Have a Camo cigarette.
- 25:35Much pause right now for station identification.
- 25:38Your attention please.
- 25:40You are tuned to Yankee baseball over WOKO radio, Albany, and the Red Sox.
- 25:47Yankee baseball over WOKO radio, Albany, New York.
- 25:53Thank you.
- 25:55Cleve Boyer coming on top of the second inning.
- 25:58Yankees three, Red Sox two.
- 26:00Mambo Kets first pick to Boyer is a fastball on the outside corner, strike one.
- 26:04Boyer moving that average up there, batting at 249 as the game gets underway.
- 26:09Seven homers, 25 RBI.
- 26:12Mambo Ket again to Cleve Boyer, swings and misses, strike two.
- 26:19No balls, two strikes to Cleve Boyer.
- 26:28Yankees have won ten of their last 13.
- 26:31They get a big five-game set with the Tigers coming up, and then four games with the Minnesota Twins.
- 26:38Two strikes to Boyer is outside, one ball, two strikes.
- 26:45Yankees will be back at the stadium on July the 15th against the Washington Senators.
- 26:53Here's the next one to Boyer, hit on the ground, a right field base hit.
- 26:57A high fastball just slapped on the ground between Schilling and Hort, and Boyer's got himself another base hit.
- 27:06Boyer, that's the way it goes when you got the hat bat, and that is the 11th straight game that Boyer has hit in.
- 27:13He's got 11 games to go in.
- 27:17All right, here's Jim Bountain.
- 27:20Bountain, three for 28, batting at.107.
- 27:29Mambo gets pitched to Bountain, is bonnet, short first, Boyer, up with it, starts to go to second, changes his mind and flips to Schilling at first.
- 27:39So a good sacrifice for Bountain, moves Boyer to second base, the play going from three to four.
- 27:46And now here's Bobby Richardson.
- 27:48Rich?
- 27:49Jerry, we've got a little hole here because the catch is out of command.
- 27:51This is Fourth of July, and I know that this is a very particularly sensitive day for you.
- 27:57You know, two times in the Marine Corps is quite a pilot.
- 28:00And I thought that we'd think about something, and we'd ask the audience to think about it, see if they can come up with it, and we'll ask them to think about how many places in the United States do our flags on 24 hours a day, and how many by custom, and how many by signage.
- 28:18Bobby Richardson coming on.
- 28:21Fixed to Bobby is in there for a strike, and Bill Mambo gets jumped to foot when he lets that ball go because it was right down the pipe.
- 28:34Well, Dino One.
- 28:37Well, our engineer Joe Cooper ought to know one. He's setting a naval boat off of it long enough.
- 28:46All right, Richardson with a one-strike count.
- 28:49Boyer at second, one away.
- 28:51Mambo-Kett curveball is outside.
- 28:54One and one.
- 29:04One ball, one strike. One away.
- 29:08Boyer at second base.
- 29:10Yanks three, Red Sox two.
- 29:13Yankees have five hits, the Sox two.
- 29:16Now Mambo-Kett says something to Chuck Schilling.
- 29:23Schilling at second base moved in. Now he's going back to his regular defensive position.
- 29:27Sometimes a pitcher will place an infielder depending on where he wants to pitch him.
- 29:33Fastball is outside and low. Two balls and a strike. Two and one to count.
- 29:47Top of the second inning, and now Mambo-Kett and Schilling are discussing something.
- 29:53Looks like Chuck now takes two steps to his right.
- 29:58Mambo-Kett has been pitching Richardson outside. First this would be a decoy now.
- 30:04The two-one pitch to Bobby. A curve is outside. Again, three and one. Three balls, one strike.
- 30:10But Mambo-Kett wanted to do a Schilling with Richardson, a straightaway hitter.
- 30:14He wanted to get him over in the hole between first and second.
- 30:17Bobby will slap the ball out there, as Boyer did, to get on.
- 30:23Schilling now is where Mambo-Kett would like him to be, and now Mambo-Kett is a happier pitcher.
- 30:31All right, the three-one pitch on the way to Bobby. A ground ball to Don Joseph.
- 30:35Nice play on a tough hop to flip to first. There goes Boyer to third, and it's a double play.
- 30:41That one went from five to three to six. Five, three, six.
- 30:53And Yanks is out of there, here on the top of the second.
- 30:57No runs on one hit, nobody left, and the score after one and a half, Yanks three, Red Sox two.
- 31:04Okay, we're moving to the bottom of the second inning.
- 31:11Ed Bursue, the shortstop, is coming on. And to that question posed to us by Mr. Red Barber,
- 31:17we're going to let him give the answer to you at the end of the day.
- 31:21Well, I did a little research, Jerry, when we were in Baltimore, and that might give a little hint.
- 31:27I see you're in the right place.
- 31:31All right, here's Ed Bursue, the shortstop. Yanks three, Red Sox two. Take the ball low, ball one.
- 31:38Fountain for the Yankees, Mon Bouquet for the Sox. Bursue batting at 224, five homers, 14 RBIs.
- 31:48Fountain again to Bursue, outside this time, two and O.
- 31:53Jerry, I think we ought to explain that our radio man from the Navy and for our broadcast,
- 32:01Joe Cooper, wants to know about does this pertain to naval ships at sea? We say no.
- 32:08Ed Bursue drives into left field base, a sharp line drive between Boyer and Kubek,
- 32:14and Bursue is on with a single, here to lead off the second inning for the Spartans.
- 32:19Sadly, Ed Bursue, who has his master's degree, plans on becoming a coach in California on his retirement.
- 32:28He said his retirement will depend entirely on how quickly Rucho Pesticelli comes along.
- 32:36And that's the way of this game. Youth moves the old timers aside.
- 32:42Bob Filman fouls one off Elton Howard's leg in a strike one.
- 32:48Yankee three, Red Sox two, bottom of the second inning.
- 32:58Bob Filman, 28-year-old catcher, batting at 217, five homeruns and 21 RBIs.
- 33:07Bursue moving off first. The pitch to Filman is a curve down and low, ball one, one and two to count.
- 33:16These Red Sox have been reeling and stumbling. They have really had some tough times of it.
- 33:22They're 8-3-D for Dick Raddatz having an offseason, a lot of key injuries to key personnel.
- 33:27Pitch is a slow grounder, Pepitone has it, over to Kubek for the fourth to second base.
- 33:32No chance to go back to first to get Filman.
- 33:36And there's one away as Bursue is fourth to second by Bob Filman.
- 33:41Play goes from three to six. It's actually a very close play at second base.
- 33:46Oh, it's right on the end of the bat.
- 33:49Stores the second base and Bobby Richardson, Pepitone cuts front.
- 33:53It's time to get to it and flip to Kubek.
- 33:55So there's one out, here's Bill Mamboquette.
- 33:58Mamboquette batting at.094, three for 32.
- 34:03Right hand batter, right hand pitcher facing the right-handed Plants of Jim Bout.
- 34:07Boyer moving way in, looking for a possible bunt, and there it is. It's fouled back on the screen.
- 34:15So Billy Herman wants his pitcher to move the man along, and he's going to leave it up to Chuck Schilling to drive in,
- 34:21in the event that he can move the man to second base on the sacrifice.
- 34:27Yanks three, Red Sox two, bottom of the second.
- 34:33Here's Boyer way in. Mamboquette hits a high bunt, one hop in front of the mound.
- 34:38Boyer has it over to Richardson. Nobody was covering third, and Kubek had to leave second base to move over there.
- 34:45So it's a good sacrifice for Bill Mamboquette.
- 34:49Play went from five to four, two outs.
- 34:55Schilling at second base, and the batter now is Chuck Schilling, who flied to right in the first.
- 35:14Schilling the catcher, moving off second. The pitch to Schilling at second base is low and outside ball one.
- 35:20Chuck Schilling, man with the Red Sox, five years.
- 35:28Fails from the New York area and Long Island.
- 35:31Bouton again to Schilling, a fast ball in there this time, one and one, one ball, one strike.
- 35:39And a lot of white, snowy clouds floating across the landstater.
- 35:47Now Bouton sets again, the next one is Schilling, a ground ball.
- 35:50Kubek to his left, drops it behind the bag, throw to first.
- 35:54Down inside, hits up to Hillman, and he is out of the play.
- 35:58Another throw from Jefferson to Howard.
- 36:05That's why he went from six to three to two, as a hit for Schilling.
- 36:14Hillman out, six, three, two.
- 36:18Set the tone to Howard, and boy the Red Sox, they're in the bottom of the second.
- 36:24No runs, two hits, one man left.
- 36:30The score after two full innings of play, Yankees three and the Red Sox two.
- 36:35Now Mr. Barber, I'm going to turn the microphone over to you, and I think we're all going to be educated just a little bit.
- 36:42I know, but I got curious, Jerry, when we were at Baltimore on the beginning of this trip,
- 36:46and I think that the one place to find out where our flag flies 24 hours a day was to watch Fort McHenry.
- 36:53The first time I had gotten the idea about our flag flying someplace 24 hours a day was when I stood at daybreak on the top of Mount Sotobachi
- 37:01when I was out at Iwo Jima on a USO tour.
- 37:04And the commanding officer told me that the flag there flew 24 hours a day
- 37:08and told me how often they had to replace it because the wind was carried in the shreds.
- 37:13Well Fort McHenry, of course, was the place where Francis Scott Key, during the bombardment,
- 37:17wrote the words to the South Sangamana, not the music, but the words.
- 37:21And so our flag, my sanction, flies there 24 hours a day and also flies in Baltimore at the Mary Pickles Gills home,
- 37:30which is known as Flag House in Baltimore, which is the home of Mary Pickles Gills,
- 37:35who with some other ladies made that flag that Francis Scott Key wrote about.
- 37:40So that's two places in Baltimore.
- 37:42The third place that the flag flies by sanction is at the Iwo Jima War Memorial at Arlington National Cemetery.
- 37:49But by a harsh rule, the flag flies 24 hours a day over Congress.
- 37:54It flies by sanction, by custom, at Iwo Jima, by custom over the Arizona at Pearl Harbor,
- 38:00by custom over the dormitory at Gettysburg College, Gettysburg, Pennsylvania.
- 38:04By custom over the hospital during the Civil War.
- 38:06By custom at the town square at Teotihu, Mexico, where Pip Carson found the flagpole and nailed the flag up there
- 38:13so nobody could take it down, even if they lost its limit.
- 38:16And at the War Memorial in Woonston, Massachusetts.
- 38:20Well, I've just been educated, Red.
- 38:23Well, I was educated, Jerry, and I think it's an education that we ought to think about more often than just one day a year.
- 38:29Very so.
- 38:30Tony Kubeck is the batter, and right now he has a two ball, no strike count as we move into the top of the third inning
- 38:36with the Yankees leading three to two.
- 38:44Two balls, no strikes.
- 38:46Top of the third.
- 38:49Next one to Kubeck is lying right field base hit, and Tony is starting to wield that hot bat.
- 38:54He's been plagued with that bad left shoulder most of the season.
- 38:58And suddenly now it looks as though Tony has a healthy left shoulder because he's been popping the ball.
- 39:04That's his second hit of this ball game.
- 39:07He's single to center field, the score to run on the first.
- 39:10Opens the third with a single to right.
- 39:12Now here's Tommy Tresh who flies the center on the first inning.
- 39:18The sixth hit off Monboquette.
- 39:22Bill Monboquette, the right hander, sets the fix and corrects it outside ball one.
- 39:26Kubeck with a false start at first base trying to upset the catcher.
- 39:32Be amazed what that will do to a catcher when he sees that runner take that one quick step.
- 39:36He just starts to bounce.
- 39:38He'll come up throwing sometimes.
- 39:42Monboquette again, the right hander set.
- 39:44Tresh, long drive bound on the right field side over the roof.
- 39:49Well hit way out in front of the ball with Tommy Tresh.
- 39:56Monboquette seems to be using a lot of breaking stuff today.
- 40:00He's got a good fastball when he's right, but he's been throwing a lot of breaking stuff.
- 40:05Slow curve ball.
- 40:08All right, Kubeck moving off first.
- 40:10Throw over there, has him back.
- 40:12Tony Hortz, young first baseman, puts an extra tag on Kubeck just to be sure.
- 40:17There's Monboquette, gets the ball.
- 40:19The next one to Tresh is a curve ball low.
- 40:21Two balls, one strike.
- 40:23Yankees three, Red Sox two, top of the third.
- 40:44Monboquette sets a 2-1 pitch to Tresh.
- 40:47Hits softly into right field, coming on as Kanegle-Earl, and gets under it and takes it,
- 40:53and took it as though he might not get a hold of it.
- 40:56That ball almost landed on the ground before he got to it.
- 40:59Looks like he had it, and he had to take two quick steps to come up with the ball.
- 41:05Well, that gave the fans their thrill.
- 41:08Now here's Elston Howard, who flied to center field in the first inning.
- 41:12It's a 2-1 for one.
- 41:18Hits the first pitch foul out of play, and a strike one.
- 41:23Elston Howard, high and outside, which can be a dangerous thing on this part,
- 41:28because he's strong enough to pull the ball.
- 41:32Breeze gently blowing in from center field, not too strong.
- 41:38Here's Monboquette, sets, pitch daily, strike, caught the outside corner, no ball, two strikes.
- 41:46One away, Kubek with the leadoff single at the first base.
- 41:59Monboquette again, sets, the next pitch to Howard, checks Wayne Fowl back on the screen.
- 42:04That ball looked like it might have hit Howard in the knee.
- 42:07He turned around and got his bat down there, and it just flied off and back on the screen.
- 42:12So the count remains, but nothing ensued, Elston Howard.
- 42:28Monboquette with a side from Tillman, the right hander set.
- 42:31The next one to Howard swings, and this is a fastball on the letter strike three.
- 42:37That's strikeout number two for Monboquette, a good stuff on Atlin.
- 42:42And here is Joe Capitone.
- 42:45Capitone lofts with a double into left center, the score of Richardson and Kubek.
- 42:58He takes that back, he lofts with a double into left center to score Richardson.
- 43:02Lopez scored Kubek and Capitone a little later.
- 43:07Now Monboquette sets and then steps off the rubber.
- 43:11Watch a little more Rodin.
- 43:14Two outs, Kubek at first base, Yank three, Red Sox two.
- 43:23Tillman, Monboquette delivers to Capitone in there and it's a strike.
- 43:31Tillman, Monboquette moving to that fastball.
- 43:36He's effective with it.
- 43:37It's got a good curve, but not when he uses it too often.
- 43:41Sometimes the pitcher falls in love with a certain pitch.
- 43:45He gets the tattoo pretty good before he finds out that it's not the one he ought to use most.
- 43:50There's a fastball and this is outside.
- 43:52One ball, one strike.
- 43:58Frank Facetti coaching at third base.
- 44:00Vern Benson at first for the Yanks.
- 44:03Slade umpires, John Wright at first, it's Bill Valentine second base, Bill McKinley at third, it's Hank Sore.
- 44:11Monboquette again, the pitch to Capitone, just misses outside.
- 44:15One ball, one strike.
- 44:36Ready again, Monboquette gets the side.
- 44:38Here's the next one to Capitone, this is outside again, it's three and one.
- 44:43Monboquette fishing for that outside corner, lifts it on three occasions.
- 44:51And it's a three-one count to Joe Pepitone.
- 44:55Tony Kubek at first base, maybe on the move.
- 44:59Let's see how Johnny Keene places it.
- 45:01Yankees lead three to two, top of the third.
- 45:04Kubek with the lead at first, and a throw over there as Monboquette has something of the same thing in mind.
- 45:15Kubek again with the lead as Monboquette steps off the river.
- 45:19Now he's back on.
- 45:22There goes Tony to pitch this, Pepitone is hit high on the air at his great center field.
- 45:27And Pia's got an underhand where the glass is down and the side is inside.
- 45:33So the leadoff sent by Kubek went away.
- 45:36Well the Yankees know where I'm going, one hit one left.
- 45:38And the score has it two and a half, New York free and Boston free.
- 45:45So we move into the bottom of the third inning.
- 45:48Dawkins down, young third base is coming on.
- 45:52Hilltops, on the now, three to two ball again, Yankees out front.
- 45:57And here's Redbarbitt, right?
- 45:59Up there's Jones, and the left hand hitter is going to feel very nice.
- 46:03So John Bunch, the foul is placed good down.
- 46:05Dawkins down, another young man, and a fly ball to right field.
- 46:12The Yankees are leading three to two.
- 46:15They're talking about the wall, and finally ball it down is what it means for a ballgum.
- 46:23The ground ball wide up first, up it on the back, to your front, to the back and covering, in time for the other.
- 46:29What this wall means in Boston, the left field wall, is that no lead will stay.
- 46:35In other words, any ballgum can come up with a bunch of runs in a inning by a couple of balls that are off of it.
- 46:40In other words, the man in the green said, well when you came into this league, this was the first thing they told you about this wall.
- 46:47He said, you've got to play for the beginning.
- 46:52So the Yankees went out and got three in the red box, and they led back to two.
- 46:56And here is Horton calling the pitch off.
- 46:58He's single, he's just not the red box, he's running back in first, to show you how he's going to get up there.
- 47:04One down.
- 47:06This is a very vital game for the Yankees.
- 47:09They've been struggling all season to get even, and they have taken a run at it.
- 47:13Now they're one game away from 500.
- 47:15They're a high five all out to a kind of low parry on this run down to down on this and that and through the bounce.
- 47:23The Yankees can play this and then put the double headed tomorrow, they're in the 500 season.
- 47:28And the ballgum knows they can't challenge, because they can't run at the big game until they get to it.
- 47:37That's pretty plain in any walk of life.
- 47:39You've got to be even before you go forward.
- 47:42You've got to get out of the hole, you've got to get out of depth.
- 47:45You've got to get to the high rate ball in the way you want to put it.
- 47:47Here's men two, you're taking slow, ball one, right hand hitter, Horton first and...
- 47:55But the Yankees are having a win this one today and have a good week at Detroit, Minnesota.
- 47:59They're back in it.
- 48:00There's a high five all out to left field.
- 48:03Waiting to strike base for the wall, makes it now.
- 48:07One, two, three, the batsman has a run up to the easy inning, bat in order.
- 48:12And the four, the end of three, the Yankees three and the...
- 48:17The next part of the game will be brought to you by Ballantine Beer.
- 48:21The best way to enjoy the next part of the game is to do it with Ballantine Beer.
- 48:25With more spirit, right.
- 48:28Jerry, he's going to fill in on the other game, but on the fourth of July, I've got a little story.
- 48:34I talked to Bob Bickel, he's got a public relations with the Yankees,
- 48:37and I said, Bob, I want to get a couple of folks to do our thing, then.
- 48:40He said to me, I'll be sure that they're in contact with the ball game.
- 48:44So I think he said, Spitz, you remember a coach around the lake, Buster Mills?
- 48:49He's got pretty answers right now.
- 48:52Do you know where he's been from, man?
- 48:54Real name?
- 48:55Daniel, or Stuyzen, Daniel.
- 48:57Daniel Buster Mills.
- 48:59And in World War II, he got to be a lieutenant.
- 49:02Do you imagine what went on when he got on the phone and said, didn't you say lieutenant,
- 49:05Daniel Buster Mills speaking?
- 49:07Yes, he got a lot of attention.
- 49:11He's had that problem, and I've got to tell this story in the Navy.
- 49:15I'd call up to those carpool men and I'd say, this is Captain Coleman,
- 49:19and they'd say, Navy or Marine Corps?
- 49:21And I'd call the Marine Corps, I've got a different answer.
- 49:25I went down a few notches.
- 49:27Well, let's see, quickly, Senator Speer is tied at nothing after two and a half,
- 49:30Wario's lead, the Indians two and nothing after two,
- 49:33Nashville, St. Cally, and Philadelphia scoreless after two,
- 49:36St. Louis failed to score on the top of the first, playing the.
- 49:40Now we have Hector Lopez, placed up, as Yankees are playing the Red Sox.
- 49:45Good one, getaway game.
- 49:47Yankees are one of the first two.
- 49:49Driving for their second sweep of the 3-game period at GI.
- 49:52Just before the road, Yankees got low, taking three from the Angels.
- 49:57And by the way, the Angels are making life very miserable for the White Sox.
- 50:04Now Lopez got out of the hospital and flew out to Los Angeles.
- 50:07In time for that beating last evening, I guess he was with the State and Kansas City.
- 50:11The White Sox have now lost five in a row, six point one in that.
- 50:17The complexion of this race has changed so much,
- 50:20the supporting news that we've got this weekend is already out of date.
- 50:24I mean it.
- 50:27You just can't keep up with the way this thing is going.
- 50:29The White Sox dropping back five straight.
- 50:32Yankees are hoping to move in.
- 50:35They're doing good.
- 50:37Lopez takes a care of the outside.
- 50:39And I would say that if the Angels can do business where they're going to meet a couple of certain competitors in Detroit and Minneapolis,
- 50:51we've got to penetrate for the Angels.
- 50:54Let's say they can do it.
- 50:56And this one is a key game today.
- 50:58I'm going to look at the levels.
- 50:59Lopez swings it to the right, back down to short.
- 51:02The two all at a very thin time, but two runs down.
- 51:05Speaking of the problems with recording arrows and training in St. Louis and getting the paper to you,
- 51:10their big front speed is at eighty-fifths.
- 51:16And he's running to Greece since they've turned.
- 51:21I think one of the reasons baseball has this hole that it has is because it's not all that wide so much.
- 51:27So they come sudden, it's up to the sound.
- 51:29It's tricky, it's wild.
- 51:32Boys and girls.
- 51:38And here is Roger Repose.
- 51:40Strange and as a loop-a-bop.
- 51:42And here's McHappell, and it's just happened in a few days.
- 51:46Young man is suddenly patched up from Toledo.
- 51:48Boom, home run at Baltimore.
- 51:50Boom, home run at Boston.
- 51:53Singleton Boston, sacrifice line Boston, and yesterday the Collin.
- 51:58Jerry, that's a jolt, isn't it?
- 52:01Well, it's always a jolt when you go to Hitler's right there.
- 52:03It just depends on how long it lasts.
- 52:06Especially if you're breaking in and you just broke in.
- 52:09He takes the ball inside, ball one.
- 52:12I don't know whether anybody told Repose this or not, Jerry,
- 52:15but Mumblecad is an extremely sloppy man when he's got a baseball in his hand.
- 52:19He's a tough pitcher, and I think, too, it's tough for a youngster to break in with such a flurry.
- 52:24You know, you can ease into it, but certainly with that big flurry,
- 52:27you kind of think, well, maybe I have to keep it up.
- 52:29Nobody can do it.
- 52:31Mumblecad comes down, and Repose swings it the high fly down the left field line.
- 52:36It's into the fan foul.
- 52:41One ball, two strikes.
- 52:42We have one out here on the floor.
- 52:44The Yankees are holding on to the fat end of a squeaker, three to two, all scoring in the first inning.
- 52:52Mumblecad, he works rather deliberately.
- 52:54PDA for the Boston Mount staff, right time, he's keeping the Yankees.
- 52:59Fifteen games are lost to them for all time.
- 53:03Tillman has his catcher, his hit, things up, it's hopped up.
- 53:07There's got the Tillman right at the plate.
- 53:09Now a step back, there it is.
- 53:12Drop.
- 53:17And Boyam, fake hit, second inning in the right field, 11th-rate game.
- 53:28The player representing the Yankees.
- 53:37Red hand batter.
- 53:44This is over for the strikes.
- 53:46Mumblecad giving him the slider.
- 53:48Frank Rosetti, pushing down at the end.
- 53:51Grand Dances, at the end.
- 53:55The Yankees are holding on to the fat end of the court, killing Brasul and Jones.
- 54:02Right hand is set, low outside for the ball, one and one.
- 54:06And the outfield for the Red Sox, here on a beautiful Sunbent's afternoon.
- 54:11Lee Thomas is in left.
- 54:14And he's in center.
- 54:28Time being called briefly by play down by right.
- 54:30Boyam, the hitter stepping out, now he's in.
- 54:33Time is in.
- 54:34The pitch, point on the ground ball, right back through the 50, back and second in the center field.
- 54:38And Boyam hits it right through the middle.
- 54:44The voice behind us, I think you haven't been listening lately, and you're conscious of it,
- 54:49is the voice on the touch box, public address system.
- 54:53Not the part, public address system.
- 54:59Two down.
- 55:01Boyam, and here's Bouton. Right-handed batter, back to five, second in.
- 55:09The defense is straight away on the end.
- 55:13And the double-header is destroyed tomorrow.
- 55:15How you four goes in one.
- 55:17Stafford, who has been taking x-ray treatment for a sore right shoulder.
- 55:24Stafford will warm up for the other game, and if he can go ahead, he will.
- 55:27If not, then Jannekeen said, please don't ask me who you'll be.
- 55:32I don't know.
- 55:34I would say that we've eliminated one possibility, if Stafford can't do it.
- 55:38And that happened when we saw Rennie jump up and start throwing.
- 55:41Coach, he hasn't quite eliminated himself yet, but if he's on tap as a long man today and gets in,
- 55:45he's out tomorrow, 50 blow.
- 55:49It could be that everyone is hoping Stafford can do it, including Bill.
- 55:55Now, he has to throw the ball.
- 55:57He's going to nut it.
- 55:59He won't, so he's got to wall it for a good point.
- 56:02But if he can do it, then it looks as though it might be Hamilton.
- 56:06Touch, in for the strike, turn away.
- 56:12Speaking about Hamilton, I wonder if people stop and realize that the middleman on the ball top,
- 56:18a fellow's more on the roster, actually can make a break to your team in the front of the tunnel.
- 56:24Touch, in for the strike.
- 56:27Now, if you're a star performer, a front line performer, if you're a regular, you're playing all the time.
- 56:31There's no problem with you because you're in there.
- 56:34Your only problem is with yourself.
- 56:38You have the use of your own talent.
- 56:40But if you say, I'm Stephen Hamilton, and you're in the bullpen, you can't start.
- 56:45You have to wait.
- 56:46You touch, if somebody else can.
- 56:50There's a ground ball, and hit the second.
- 56:54Over the first, and that's it.
- 57:00All rounds, one hit, one left.
- 57:03Four on, middle of the fourth, single game.
- 57:06Yankee three, Red Sox two.
- 57:09Why does Valentine's Day feel like a rocket flight?
- 57:22Why does Valentine's Day feel like a marching band?
- 57:28A race that finishes neck and neck, or a ride on a rocket flight?
- 57:35Why does Valentine's Day feel like a beautiful ball?
- 57:41Why does Valentine's Day feel like a fireman's ball?
- 57:47And why does Valentine's Day feel like a tight, you know, windy sky?
- 57:53There's more spirit to it than to fall.
- 57:58If you want to start living the life that lies in your spirit, live it with spirit.
- 58:03Valentine's Day, there's more spirit to it.
- 58:17Reports for safety identification.
- 58:22Your attention please.
- 58:24You are listening to Yankee baseball over WOKO 1460 Albany, New York.
- 58:31Thank you.
- 59:01The first is Richardson.
- 59:04Suddenly got in red hot for the second.
- 59:06Kupac was hitting steadily.
- 59:08There's a short and boy, and now his safety is 11 straight at the third.
- 59:13Passball is low.
- 59:15Babin throwing it all ahead, one and one.
- 59:18We have Tom Frank in left field.
- 59:22Center fielder is John Roger Ripoll.
- 59:24Right fielder, very valuable, steady man, Hector Lopez.
- 59:29Tom has fouled it in the dirt, right down by his feet.
- 59:32Right to one and two.
- 59:36The wind is blowing from right field to left, from first base to third.
- 59:43As it is now constituted, it will hop on high, fly ball to left.
- 59:52Billy Gardner coaching the third, keep Ronald to third.
- 59:56Right to your corner.
- 59:59The ball is in play.
- 1:00:01Thomas is coming in the second base, open as he please.
- 1:00:03It's a battle.
- 1:00:05So he has ripped the time around right down to the pickup point.
- 1:00:09Start off the last of the fourth inning.
- 1:00:12Please Thomas, second double.
- 1:00:14Jerry told you the first one, he reached out and hit a high outside change of pace,
- 1:00:18and he positioned the ball, floated it.
- 1:00:22Between the left and center fielder.
- 1:00:24He should have hung the calls on right down to that sixth-feet player.
- 1:00:29Number five, and here's Tony from Nicolai Alonzo.
- 1:00:37Welcome right-hand hitter.
- 1:00:38Renif is in the both hands, and throwing the second time.
- 1:00:42Pitchers on the outside.
- 1:00:44Ball one.
- 1:00:46Johnny Key can't worry about tomorrow in Detroit and the two ballgames there.
- 1:00:51He's got to worry about this one here at Boston.
- 1:00:53This one that he hopes he can grab to get on the plane with his 500.
- 1:00:59Speaking of getting on the plane, we have an active road secretary, Bob Fischl, who'll do that.
- 1:01:07Bruce Henry, the regular service secretary, is on the sad journey home.
- 1:01:12Mr. Henry's father died.
- 1:01:15And Bruce was gone in Detroit.
- 1:01:27Up to the arrow.
- 1:01:31Outside, ball one.
- 1:01:33There's nobody out there in trouble.
- 1:01:36He's leading 3-2.
- 1:01:38One run does not mean a thing in this ballpark.
- 1:01:43Low outside of curve ball.
- 1:01:49The Boston fans who have had very little to be optimistic about or happy about, that's here for now.
- 1:02:01A drive off the left field.
- 1:02:03Boy, he's hit it hard.
- 1:02:30Tony Conigriero finally got the Boston fans in a completely sanguinary mood.
- 1:02:35And the main man in both sent to the meaning of the word.
- 1:02:38When he rips his 16 home run, he takes his RBIs up to 38 and puts the stocks out in front for three.
- 1:02:44They have not been in front.
- 1:02:46He deposes a fountain just like that.
- 1:02:48Dean is out into mound and out of the box then comes Harold Hurnie.
- 1:02:52Boom, boom, boom.
- 1:02:56You've seen many a ball game, a pitch like this up here in Boston.
- 1:03:00I remarked the other night that the classic game that I recall goes back to the opening day of 1950.
- 1:03:06The Red Sox had a 9-0 in the fifth inning and we beat them 15-10.
- 1:03:10And so often, three and four run lead going into the eighth and ninth inning has dissipated.
- 1:03:17It's been destroyed with a few shots here and there.
- 1:03:20It doesn't take much.
- 1:03:22When you've got the fellows with the power, that's Conigriero, that's number 16 for him,
- 1:03:27puts them up there among the league leaders.
- 1:03:30There's no question about it.
- 1:03:31The only question about the ball was it's there foul.
- 1:03:34And it was hit so hard that it started to hook.
- 1:03:36And it wasn't fair by more than 6-8 feet.
- 1:03:39But brother, it went out of here.
- 1:03:41And yet, not only it clipped the wall, but they have a big, high net on top of the wall
- 1:03:46because there's a streak in back of this left field wall if you've never seen it,
- 1:03:49with scores on the other side.
- 1:03:52And of course, Mr. Yawkey is a wealthy man,
- 1:03:55but his pocketbook was being packed to put in plate-class wonders until they put that net up there.
- 1:04:02So Jim Barton, who has done the tights, the Yankees started with three.
- 1:04:07And if you leave, the Yankees still have three, but the Red Sox now have four.
- 1:04:11And Renes is in for a 28-4 game all out of the bullpen, and the record is one game won and three lost.
- 1:04:17So among other things, this means, according to Dean's thinking and the study of availability,
- 1:04:24that it is Whitey Ford and Bill Stafford and or Hamilton,
- 1:04:29Stephen Hamilton in the doubleheader at the start tomorrow.
- 1:04:32The pitching staff would be all right except for the two games, manana.
- 1:04:36Two, nobody outlasted the four.
- 1:04:44Renes has come on.
- 1:04:50We're going to have some changes among our friends at the four-foot space.
- 1:05:02A couple of the writers who will not be on with us, and we'll pick up some new ones tomorrow.
- 1:05:08Now here is Bessou, who is 1-4-1.
- 1:05:10Bixby Carroll will outside.
- 1:05:13Vicki Young of the News stays with us.
- 1:05:15Another copy of the Times will go home this evening.
- 1:05:19And Joe Dershow will join us in Detroit.
- 1:05:24A trip to Bessou.
- 1:05:26Leo Levine has just made a trip with us to the Tribune, and he goes to New York.
- 1:05:32Hal Rosenthal will join us in Detroit tomorrow.
- 1:05:35Gary Mitchell stays with us for the post.
- 1:05:37Same for Vardenzie of the Journal, American.
- 1:05:40Gil King of the Telegram.
- 1:05:42Joe Kropinski of Newsday.
- 1:05:44Jim Ogle of the New York Star Ledger.
- 1:05:47Foulback.
- 1:05:51And while I have this opportunity, we all missed Ruth Henry.
- 1:05:55He's got everything set for us to go to Detroit.
- 1:05:58He's a person that is, unless you made a road trip with the Yankees, you couldn't appreciate.
- 1:06:03He is a very, very efficient and a very pleasant road secretary.
- 1:06:07And I've talked with some of the Yankees who have been around, and they say that he's the best one that they've ever known.
- 1:06:14This is outside.
- 1:06:17Two balls to strike.
- 1:06:26The field ahead of us.
- 1:06:27Red stock.
- 1:06:28Four.
- 1:06:30The Yankees have come up a three-inch barrel.
- 1:06:32Three.
- 1:06:34Brennan for leaving.
- 1:06:36Delivers.
- 1:06:37Has the ball pushed down to right field.
- 1:06:39Right field, Lopez.
- 1:06:40Right field awaiting.
- 1:06:41And makes a shot.
- 1:06:44One out.
- 1:06:46And that's a tillman.
- 1:06:50The book on Bill Mumblecat, who is a hard man to beat at any time, is that you have more to search if you're going to panel him if you do it early in the bargain.
- 1:07:00Once you let him get paneled, he gets increasingly picky.
- 1:07:08Tillman picks.
- 1:07:10The inside, right up by his hand.
- 1:07:11Ball in.
- 1:07:20Down ball hits the turn.
- 1:07:22It almost knocked Boyer down.
- 1:07:23Here's another throw to Boyer's end line.
- 1:07:26It was a sharp high bounce that knocked Boyer to his knees.
- 1:07:31And if you wish an amplification of the time, hot corner, he is the man I refer you to.
- 1:07:41There we have two of them.
- 1:07:42Boyer, he gets cut.
- 1:07:44Now here's a picture of Bill Mumblecat, right hand batter.
- 1:07:50Brennan, but there's two of them.
- 1:07:51Ball one.
- 1:07:57Beautiful day up here at Boston.
- 1:08:02Low inside.
- 1:08:04One and one.
- 1:08:05I wouldn't be surprised to take all the major accounts.
- 1:08:09If you have to pick one for summer weather, this would be it.
- 1:08:15And the proximity of Kate Card.
- 1:08:19Curve a lot that ball free.
- 1:08:21You can hear this third guy, who is the broadcaster up here.
- 1:08:27He talks to fishing broadcasters around the hour.
- 1:08:30Goes down to a little place on Kate Card all the time.
- 1:08:34He's got a couple miles watering.
- 1:08:38Such a development strike.
- 1:08:40Three and one.
- 1:08:44I know when Frank Price was broadcasting up here, he had the lead.
- 1:08:48Three one pitch.
- 1:08:49Inside, ball four.
- 1:08:55So let's get down.
- 1:08:56Back to the course.
- 1:08:58Red Clarks has gone ahead.
- 1:09:00Thomas doubles.
- 1:09:02And Camigliano, home run.
- 1:09:04And let me say this, that Johnny Kane is not as precipitous about lifting to Boston as you might think just to say a double in a home run.
- 1:09:11And he takes his man out when the fill of one run bogies.
- 1:09:15You have seen the double and the home run and how hard they were hit.
- 1:09:21You wonder how the baseball can stand it.
- 1:09:27And here's Chuck Schilling with one for two.
- 1:09:29Hit the drive out at the center of the course.
- 1:09:31Coming in, coming in, coming in.
- 1:09:32Can't get there.
- 1:09:33They're stuck there.
- 1:09:34They hit.
- 1:09:35And one more step.
- 1:09:36The lead runner starts to swing away.
- 1:09:41Schilling, loose corner to start center.
- 1:09:46Now the Red Sox have seven minutes.
- 1:09:48Inside at seven.
- 1:09:51Here's Thornton Jones, left side hitting.
- 1:09:54Young, very patient.
- 1:10:00Jones trying to send the drive.
- 1:10:03Adjusted the glasses.
- 1:10:09Schilling's over two.
- 1:10:12Hit the curve, low inside.
- 1:10:15Ball one.
- 1:10:18Billy Gardner, red base coach, he's had some more stopping.
- 1:10:23Spent the last three or four days.
- 1:10:28Brennan delivers low.
- 1:10:30Ball two.
- 1:10:31Two and off.
- 1:10:50Now, steady.
- 1:10:52Now to the number second as we go to a steep one.
- 1:10:54Fine.
- 1:10:55There's a line drive now.
- 1:10:57It almost cuts the third base coach's head off.
- 1:11:00That's close to Gardening, he's got it.
- 1:11:07Working back of the players, John Wright, the umpires on the bases,
- 1:11:10and Vaman Keehan, McKinley, and Thor.
- 1:11:20That feels the steps back into left are going.
- 1:11:24Just about slightly.
- 1:11:29Brennan 50, Dalton touch, fouls it off.
- 1:11:34Two balls, two strikes.
- 1:11:40I guess that was a pretty good ball play, a strike down at Philadelphia.
- 1:11:43Before the game started last evening out in Plainview,
- 1:11:48between Allen and Thomas, and Vic Young has told us that Thomas has been put on the waiver list.
- 1:12:01Hey, good job that ball play.
- 1:12:04Whenever I hear about a ball play, it's quite a hallways to remember.
- 1:12:07Back in the mid-30s, Charlie Jackson was managing a Cincinnati high out a bullpen cut.
- 1:12:13One on the action list, a bullpen cut by the name of Gus Ripps,
- 1:12:16which used to be a fighting bullpen cut by the public court.
- 1:12:20The only guy ever hit was one of his own pitchers, Paul Gargan.
- 1:12:25That's right three in Plainview.
- 1:12:28That is all for John.
- 1:12:30Brennan hits, gets out of the threat.
- 1:12:32The man before the red card puts two in the back.
- 1:12:35Two runs, three hits, two left.
- 1:12:37Four into four, Boston four, and New York three.
- 1:12:57Well, Bill Munchat, Bill Munchalget, would be a lot harder to get along with now
- 1:13:02as we go into the fifth inning.
- 1:13:04He was, in the first inning, behind three.
- 1:13:09Then he was behind one, and now he's plus one.
- 1:13:13It'll be Richardson, Kulak, and Fred, all of them hitting, start off the fifth inning.
- 1:13:23If you want to know, as far as the hard-bitten professional baseball people are concerned,
- 1:13:27about batting, they don't care a thing about percentage.
- 1:13:32The pitchers, managers, the opposing players, they want to know who's hitting right now,
- 1:13:36who hit yesterday, who's hitting today.
- 1:13:41And they will leave the percentages to the radio broadcasters who detailed them endlessly,
- 1:13:46etc., etc., etc.
- 1:13:50And his body, who is one for two, he's hitting right now.
- 1:13:54He had a double-slippin' home run yesterday.
- 1:13:56He's down ball to third to Hotland, but it's handled by Jones, and over to first, to Hawks,
- 1:14:02and we have one out on one thing.
- 1:14:05One down.
- 1:14:07Now we have Tony Kulak.
- 1:14:09In fact, Richardson, speaking of Matt Hidders, has hit in 17 of the last 18 games.
- 1:14:14So I guarantee you they talk about him in the clubhouse and in the backhouse.
- 1:14:19And Kulak has come back to work, and he's hit safety in seventh grade games,
- 1:14:22and he's two for two today, so they know that his number is 10.
- 1:14:27They might not remember that Zuzudo used to weigh a 10, but they know who's wearing it today.
- 1:14:31Pitchers in there for a strike.
- 1:14:36Home ball, one strike, one out.
- 1:14:39The Red Sox.
- 1:14:45Grousing a little bit about the schedule.
- 1:14:47Pitch, put on as a ground ball to second.
- 1:14:50Over to first, then to right.
- 1:14:53The Red Sox have got to play a morning game tomorrow, Minnesota, and then a night game.
- 1:15:03If you think ballplayers like to get up and play a morning game,
- 1:15:07you have to let any ballplayers.
- 1:15:09Might even warrant, well, I don't know, maybe Susetti wouldn't mind.
- 1:15:14But you don't want to hear it stretch.
- 1:15:17The Red Sox take a breath five, he's had the ball covered,
- 1:15:20he's starting a line, now that's Knoxville and Benton down.
- 1:15:24First base, go.
- 1:15:32Dress, a quick hitter, and a good one, running up handed.
- 1:15:38Jackson Billy Boyd, Bill Monbouchette delivers and a tie and tie, he's got to lean back.
- 1:15:48As has been pointed out, but just in case you got in with us,
- 1:15:52lots of you do, put on your car radio, coming in a mile away, water on the beach,
- 1:15:58coming in a mile the backyard, Monbouchette is beating the anchors 15 times.
- 1:16:02Pitch outside, pitch, two and one, two balls, one to set, two outs.
- 1:16:11Monbouchette was troubled in the first inning, written on,
- 1:16:16get two outs, in the fifth.
- 1:16:23And delivers, fresh pick, tie-out, tie ball three.
- 1:16:36You see Joe Jackson's column in the New York Times this morning,
- 1:16:40on our take on Raymond and his Cuban palm ball.
- 1:16:50Very enjoyable.
- 1:16:54And it's a fact that the Zumpire made him change his uniform in one inning.
- 1:16:58There's a ball, and he hits a foul.
- 1:17:02Count it, three and two.
- 1:17:11Three balls, two strikes.
- 1:17:18Strike hanging in, Monbouchette trying for a one, two, three inning,
- 1:17:23first time today, took your work, and there's a high pop-up into short,
- 1:17:28that's out of the short, that's the two-and-a-thousand-one.
- 1:17:32He has it.
- 1:17:34And Monbouchette gets the one, two, three, four then.
- 1:17:39The single game in the middle of the fifth is now an official ball game
- 1:17:43for the Zumpire, the Zumpire four and the visitors three.
- 1:17:55And before I go, Gagliola takes the kill, I will pause the station and get a ticket.
- 1:17:59Your attention please.
- 1:18:02You are tuned to Yankee baseball over WOKO radio, Albany, New York.
- 1:18:10Tony Horton is the hitter.
- 1:18:16And Hal Reniff delivers the pitch to Horton, his low ball one.
- 1:18:21One ball, no strike. Washington pours, it's strike nothing at the end of four.
- 1:18:24Locke, a two-run home, a wicker cam against Nairm.
- 1:18:28Two to nothing, Baltimore leading Cleveland, bottom of the fourth,
- 1:18:30Pappas against Perry.
- 1:18:32Here's the one, no pitch now, it's low and it's two and oh.
- 1:18:36Calvert, Los Angeles, Minnesota, Kansas City not yet underway.
- 1:18:40St. Louis in the mess, nothing, nothing at the end of one.
- 1:18:42Spurkey against Cisco.
- 1:18:44The Finanis two and the Phillies nothing, bottom of the fourth,
- 1:18:46Nutshell against Polinsky.
- 1:18:48Pittsburgh one, Milwaukee nothing at the end of one.
- 1:18:51Fisher against Law, Bailey a home run.
- 1:18:54Giant should not score, Calvert the first, Herbill against Ewell.
- 1:18:57Los Angeles and Houston not yet underway.
- 1:19:01And Hal Reniff took enough time for us to run down the scores
- 1:19:04and now he's ready with the two-oh pitch to Tony Horton,
- 1:19:07swung on and fouled off, out of play,
- 1:19:10and it's two balls and a strike.
- 1:19:12Red Sharks lead four to three, bottom half to fifth inning.
- 1:19:17Nobody on, nobody out, two balls, one strike to count on Tony Horton.
- 1:19:23Horton's single and left and scored in the first inning,
- 1:19:26flying to right in the third.
- 1:19:28Hal Reniff delivers, low ball three.
- 1:19:34Three balls, one strike.
- 1:19:36Horton takes a look at Billy Gardner, who is coaching at third base.
- 1:19:42Now with the kind of power this fella has,
- 1:19:44you can bet he's got the green light and he can swing if he likes it.
- 1:19:47Here's the three, one, fifth.
- 1:19:48He swings and it's a hot shot.
- 1:19:49Tony Kupac, one hand over the first in time.
- 1:19:52Nice play.
- 1:19:53Kupac roams about five quick steps to his left.
- 1:19:56Made a one-handed pick-up and fired across the pepper cone in time to get Horton.
- 1:20:01So there's one out and it brings up Felix Mantia,
- 1:20:04who walked in and scored in the first inning and flies to left in the third.
- 1:20:15Reniff to Mantia, tap, foul.
- 1:20:19Halton Howard comes up with it.
- 1:20:24Red was talking about Ramos and the Cuban pound ball.
- 1:20:28I asked him what Ed Hurley said to him in Baltimore that day when
- 1:20:32Ed Hurley walked out to him in the mound.
- 1:20:37And Ramos said that Hurley asked him to wipe off the ball.
- 1:20:42Here's the one-strike pick to Mantia, foul back.
- 1:20:44He said, wipe it off when you go to your mound.
- 1:20:48And Ramos says, I looked at him and I said,
- 1:20:50but Hurley, I'm the cleanest pitcher in the league.
- 1:20:52I always wet my fingers before I throw the dirty ball.
- 1:20:58For some reason, Hurley didn't appreciate that kind of humor.
- 1:21:04Good story on Ramos.
- 1:21:08Reniff takes a little bit of time.
- 1:21:10Here's the two-strike pick to Mantia.
- 1:21:12Right arm curveball, way outside, ball one.
- 1:21:19Felix Mantia.
- 1:21:21The fellow is bouncing around, but a real tribute to him.
- 1:21:24He's come back to where he is, the starting second baseman on the offside.
- 1:21:29Wings and misses, he's out on strike.
- 1:21:31Reniff took a little bit off his curveball.
- 1:21:33Mantia was way out in front.
- 1:21:35That's his second out, second strike out for Reniff.
- 1:21:38And it brings up Lee Thomas, who is two for two, two doubles.
- 1:21:42He doubled in the first inning, goes in two runs, doubled and scored in the fourth.
- 1:21:50He's going to hit 273.
- 1:21:53He's going to get him up above the 275 mark.
- 1:21:57These fouls went off.
- 1:21:59Elson Howard got that one right off the right foot.
- 1:22:03Strike one.
- 1:22:07Ellie just kind of standing there looking down, hoping that her toes are still all there.
- 1:22:15The fouls could have come straight down and it stinged more than anything.
- 1:22:20Ellie's got the bad big toe to begin with.
- 1:22:22She nearly got a nasty one just about a week ago.
- 1:22:26Thomas swings and hits one to dead center field.
- 1:22:29Roger Rapoads flips the glasses, waits for it, and makes the catch.
- 1:22:33One, two, three for the Boston Red Sox in the fifth inning.
- 1:22:40And for sure, at the end of five, it's the Boston Red Sox four, the Mid-Idequies three.
- 1:22:52A four to three ball game.
- 1:22:55And the Red Sox are out in front.
- 1:22:57We just gave you the scores, no changes on the scoreboard.
- 1:23:01And it gives you the chance to remind you about Old Timers Day.
- 1:23:05This will be Saturday, July 31st.
- 1:23:08The names of the many great names will be coming in, Joe DiMaggio, Bill Cary, Don Nuccio, Larry Stilby.
- 1:23:17One of the old-time favorites, let's put it that way, will be entertaining before, at the same time, Dylan Bartle on his orchestra.
- 1:23:26And Tony Martin will be around the same.
- 1:23:29So it should be a big day.
- 1:23:33And we'll be there, presenting American League, Bobby Dillard, Jimmy Spott, some of the other names.
- 1:23:39So that's July 31st.
- 1:23:42Before that, the Yankees will be home for a series against Washington, the Red Sox and the White Sox.
- 1:23:50And the Yankee Stadium ticket office is open tomorrow from 10 to 5.
- 1:23:58So why don't you take a look at the schedule, pick the dates up, and drop by the Yankee Stadium ticket office and pick up your ticket.
- 1:24:10Old Timers Day, July 31st, tickets of course are moving fast.
- 1:24:15Still plenty of left.
- 1:24:17Don't wait till the last minute.
- 1:24:19Remember what happened on that day.
- 1:24:24Elston Howard, lead off here.
- 1:24:33Howard flying to center and was out on site.
- 1:24:39Real mumbo-jab, lead 4-3.
- 1:24:43The right-hander delivers to Elston Howard.
- 1:24:45High ball one. One ball, no strikes.
- 1:24:58Mumbo-ketch.
- 1:25:01Curve ball. Low. Ball two.
- 1:25:05Two balls and no strikes.
- 1:25:10The Detroit pitchers in tomorrow's game, Lollard-East Pharma, 2-0 pitch to Howard is the strike.
- 1:25:20For the Yankees, it'll be Whitey Ford definitely and Bill Stafford.
- 1:25:26Stafford is a little doubtful.
- 1:25:28Remember, he's just getting over 10 to 9ers from his right shoulder.
- 1:25:33But if he feels okay, it'll be Stafford and Ford against Lollard-East Pharma in Detroit tomorrow.
- 1:25:392-1 pitch. Strike two.
- 1:25:41Ellie started to swing, held up, but the curve ball caught the outside player.
- 1:25:46And the count level is out at two balls and two strikes.
- 1:25:53Mumbo-ketch.
- 1:25:57As the one-run lead, 4-3.
- 1:26:00Here's the 2-2 pitch fouled off out of play, right side.
- 1:26:03On the roof beyond first base. Ellie just got her bat out there.
- 1:26:11So the count remains at two balls and two strikes.
- 1:26:17Once again, the 2-2 pitch went on a bouncing ball.
- 1:26:20Eddie Bruce 2 is short, the big hop, the throw in time, and Howard is out.
- 1:26:25So there's one out in the sixth, and it brings up Joe Pepitone, who doubled and drove in a run in the first inning,
- 1:26:31and he flies to center in the third.
- 1:26:37Mumbo-ketch.
- 1:26:38Real good slider. He's got real good control of his breaking ball.
- 1:26:42Neil Blancho begins his throw for the Yankees.
- 1:26:55Pepitone swings a base at the right field.
- 1:27:05Pepitone singles the right.
- 1:27:08And what that base hit, the first of the two brutes, is for the good old.
- 1:27:13Really rooting them in there, Phil.
- 1:27:15Well, beautiful day, and a good day to enjoy the ball game.
- 1:27:21Here's Hector Lopez.
- 1:27:23Pepitone is first.
- 1:27:25Tony Horton holds him close.
- 1:27:29Lopez, single and drove in two runs and bounced out.
- 1:27:33The pitch swung on and missed strike one, and Hector tried to hit one in the right field.
- 1:27:40Lopez tried to punch one between the holes.
- 1:27:44And a little bit of confusion, maybe, because Pepitone is looking at cross-setting.
- 1:27:50Now Pepitone checking with Benson.
- 1:27:53Lopez changed the bad ball just to wear a hit-and-run play on.
- 1:27:59Leads by Pepitone. The pitch is outside.
- 1:28:03One ball and one strike.
- 1:28:08There's no answer on the hit-and-run play.
- 1:28:13Some hitters like to get an answer most of the time.
- 1:28:16Take for granted everybody's got the time.
- 1:28:22Pepitone lead at first base.
- 1:28:24The 1-1 pitch. Swung on, bouncing ball.
- 1:28:26Third base and Jones has it. Over to Schilling.
- 1:28:28One out. Over to first.
- 1:28:30It is a double play.
- 1:28:32A double play. 5-4-3. Schilling.
- 1:28:36A very quick pivot at second base.
- 1:28:39The ball was not hit sharply, and he had to get the ball on a clear to first base in a hurry, and he did just that.
- 1:28:45That ends the sixth inning. No runs. It was one hit. No errors.
- 1:28:49And nobody left on base.
- 1:28:51Those are scores at the end of five and a half innings.
- 1:28:53Bought the Red Sox. Four. The Yankees. Three.
- 1:28:57The Yankees.
- 1:29:23When I change to Winston, I change for good, cause I got to taste like I knew I would.
- 1:29:31Winston tastes good like it should. When we change to Winston, you'll change for good.
- 1:29:40Cause Winston tastes good like a cigarette shoe. Winston tastes good like a cigarette shoe. Winston tastes good.
- 1:29:55Tony Conigliaro, to lead it off. Conigliaro hit a big two-run homer.
- 1:30:11To give the Red Sox a four-to-three lead.
- 1:30:16Here's the pitch by Renish. Sides a bunt and misses at strike one.
- 1:30:36Outside. And it's one and one.
- 1:30:41July 4th. Fourth of July Independence Day.
- 1:30:45And another important day is National Foundation Baseball Day.
- 1:30:49March of Dimes Day, is the way you interpret it. Here's the pitch that's flung on and missed.
- 1:30:55And we certainly urge listeners to subscribe to the March of Dimes in your community.
- 1:31:04Give it your support. March of Dimes Day.
- 1:31:11One ball, two strikes. Conigliaro waits to pitch by Renish as well, unless he struck him out.
- 1:31:19That's the third strikeout for Renish.
- 1:31:23It came on in the fourth inning after the home run by Conigliaro.
- 1:31:30That's for Sue. Tillman, walk-mumble, get a single with Schilling.
- 1:31:35That's Jones in the inning. And as we've heard everybody since, here is for Sue.
- 1:31:41For Sue's single in the second and fly to the right.
- 1:31:46Strike. A good fast ball.
- 1:31:54Now they want to look at the ball.
- 1:31:57And they're going to change the ball. In fact they're going to throw it out.
- 1:32:05Seems like every time there's a called strike now, they want a new ball.
- 1:32:14Renish is ready in the pitch. Almost hitting the curve ball.
- 1:32:19But Sue turns away from the pitch.
- 1:32:21That's one ball, one strike. One out. Four to three in the Red Sox lead, bottom of the sixth inning.
- 1:32:29Washington four to one over Detroit in the fifth. Baltimore and Cleveland tied two-two in the sixth.
- 1:32:37One-one pitch. Swung on and missed and it strikes two.
- 1:32:41Big over three, met nothing in the second.
- 1:32:43Cincinnati two foot up, you won the fourth. Pittsburgh on a home run by Bob Bailey leading Milwaukee one to nothing in the third.
- 1:32:51Cubs lead a giant four to one in the second.
- 1:32:57And they one-two pitch now by Renifer Sue. Swung on and missed. Struck him out. Four strikeouts.
- 1:33:06It's an off-season pitch. A breaking ball that Renifer's throwing.
- 1:33:12And they one pitch that's been getting the strikeouts on.
- 1:33:15And here's Bob Fillman.
- 1:33:27Fillman hit it into a fourth play and bounced out.
- 1:33:30Here's a fly ball down the right field line. Could be trouble. Hector Lopez coming over fast near the line.
- 1:33:35He can't get it. Double.
- 1:33:38The ball bounces into the stands with a two-base hit by Bob Fillman.
- 1:33:43A high fly ball.
- 1:33:46It was fair by a couple of feet and once it hit the hard ground it bounced into the stands which are right next to the foul line.
- 1:33:54And Fillman is on with a double.
- 1:33:56They play the big guy to pull that ball and Lopez had a long way to come.
- 1:34:04Came a mile and a half but it was not enough.
- 1:34:07And here is Joe Mambo-Kett. Mambo-Kett sacrificed and walked.
- 1:34:11Right handed batter. Red Sox lead four to three. Bottom of the sixth two outs.
- 1:34:16Pitch is outside. Ball one.
- 1:34:22One ball. No strikes.
- 1:34:27Bob Fillman at second base. He's had some problems on the bases.
- 1:34:35Ball two.
- 1:34:37And I guarantee you that nobody's going to pick him off second.
- 1:34:41Because the lead that he has is not much of a lead. In fact right now he's standing on the back.
- 1:34:48One, two, three steps off, four steps off, five. That's it. End of lead.
- 1:34:57If he'd end up getting picked off I think his wallet would be sliced.
- 1:35:03Two nothing pitch is a strike.
- 1:35:06Renner for some reason has a problem pitching to Mambo-Kett.
- 1:35:12He walked him in the fourth inning.
- 1:35:21Two one pitch. Full out and missed. Strike two.
- 1:35:29Two balls, two strikes, two outs.
- 1:35:32Bottom of the sixth inning. Red Sox are out in front four to three.
- 1:35:43Renner Freddie. The pitch.
- 1:35:45One out and missed. He struck him out and Renner ends up striking out the side.
- 1:35:49Five strikeouts for Renner.
- 1:35:53And that ends the inning for the Red Sox. No run to his one hit.
- 1:35:57No errors and one man was left on base. The score at the end of sixth.
- 1:36:00Red Sox four, Yankees three.
- 1:36:04The next portion of this game will be brought to you by the Atlantic Refining Company and your Atlantic dealer who offer you Atlantic Imperial.
- 1:36:13The gasoline that cleans where dirt, dirt, smokes.
- 1:36:33Roger reports.
- 1:36:36The big boy and the pitcher do to hit here in the top of the seventh. Four to three is the score.
- 1:36:45Red Sox are out in front.
- 1:36:56A reminder that the Yankee Stadium advanced ticket office on the east 157th Street side of the stadium is open every day this weekend at five o'clock.
- 1:37:07Go for it today and tomorrow.
- 1:37:10Of course it's funny how pretty you are when you do your ticket shopping for all the big games coming up later this month.
- 1:37:16And there's a lot to choose from.
- 1:37:18Old timers.
- 1:37:27All right.
- 1:37:32The Yankees will be in Thursday, Friday night, Saturday afternoon, Sunday and then the Red Sox come in for a night game, ladies day game, Tuesday is the rarity.
- 1:37:52The Yankees are in the fourth inning, the Yankees are in the fourth inning.
- 1:38:02Roger reports.
- 1:38:05Roger reports.
- 1:38:07Bill Mambo kept delivers the repose, hung on and missed one ball and one strike. Well, they think still that they've got a little bit of a focus there on this youngster. I think you're right, Joe. But I don't know whether it's going to work.
- 1:38:23Although he did strike him out on that same time pitch last time.
- 1:38:26Well, hitting and pitching is a constant battle. They're showing them the fastball and changing speed and trying to deal with off-speed breaking pitches. There's a fastball outside. Two balls and one strike.
- 1:38:41When you start to hit the pitchers, they change.
- 1:38:45And they start to get you out and then you change.
- 1:38:48And you start to hit them again and then they change.
- 1:38:51And it goes on and on. Like the dog wardrobe with all those changes, Joe.
- 1:38:58Strike.
- 1:39:01You want to repeat that for the West Coast, though?
- 1:39:09Sharks today are rooted to do though.
- 1:39:13I like the guy that's down in Cleveland. Two-two pitch.
- 1:39:17This one well hit. Center field. Manpia is going back near the warning flag and makes the catch right up against the fence.
- 1:39:27Roger reposed. Hit one. Keeps the right center field.
- 1:39:32And Felix Manpia made the play right next to the fence.
- 1:39:41And there is one out.
- 1:39:51Here is Cleve Boyer.
- 1:39:58Ray Barker is the on-bet hitter. He'll be the pinch hitter.
- 1:40:02Boyer is two for two. He's single to right and single up the middle. Takes the curveball outside. Ball one.
- 1:40:12Repose really hit that one. But he hit it in the big part of the ballpark.
- 1:40:19Not many home runs hit in the center field section here.
- 1:40:23Here's one line drive left center field. That's going to plug the gap.
- 1:40:27One-and-a-half off the wall. Boyer around first. He's taking for second. Here comes the throw. The slide. Not in time.
- 1:40:33Boyer is there with the double. Three for three for Boyer.
- 1:40:41Green Boyer at second base with the double.
- 1:40:47That's his 11th double of the year.
- 1:40:50And I'm sure you've been hearing all day he's on the 11-game hitting streak. Dick Redditt gets up in the Red Sox bullpen.
- 1:40:58Bob Kepenauer is throwing for the Yankees. And Ray Barker comes on as the pinch hitter.
- 1:41:04Four to three to score. Red Sox lead. Top of the seven. One man out.
- 1:41:10Bob Kepenauer takes too much time and Barker backs out.
- 1:41:23And it's ball one. Boyer is now up to 258.
- 1:41:40One ball, no strikes. Ray Barker, a pinch hitter with Boyer at second base. Four to three to score. Red Sox lead.
- 1:41:51Swung on a little looper in the short center field. Manetier got a bad break. Now he comes in, makes the play.
- 1:41:56He put back on the ball. But it was too hard enough to where he could retrace his steps.
- 1:42:03And hauls it in. So there are two away and it brings up Bobby Richardson.
- 1:42:12Mombochet, very obvious, has a good slider going for him today. He's hitting a lot of the hitters right about at the handle.
- 1:42:25And the ball seems to be hitting well, but it doesn't carry.
- 1:42:32And that's the spot for the slider, the handle, or the trademark.
- 1:42:38Boyer at second base. Mombochet really taking a lot of time.
- 1:42:44He's nursing a one run lead. Four to three is the score.
- 1:42:49Now he's stuck. Sucks Boyer. Here's the pitch. Strike. One strike.
- 1:43:05Sweet Boyer. 18 for 41 in the streak, which is a 439 average.
- 1:43:14Ha. One ball, one strike.
- 1:43:18Bill Cain figures it up that he has moved up 37 points from 221 to 258.
- 1:43:30That Boyer who's on at second base. Bobby Richardson, the count of one ball, one strike.
- 1:43:36Pitch by Mombochet is outside. Two balls and a strike.
- 1:43:47Four to three. Red Sox lead. Two men out and the top of the seventh.
- 1:43:55Red has continued to throw on the Red Sox bullpen. Here's the pitch. Swung on and fouled back.
- 1:44:02Two balls, two strikes. The count on Bobby Richardson. Two men out.
- 1:44:15Top of the seventh inning. Sweet Boyer at second base.
- 1:44:21Very good basehead of the afternoon. A double. Here's the 2-2 picture of Richardson high. Ball three.
- 1:44:28Now it's a full count. Three balls, two strikes. Two out.
- 1:44:38Mombochet.
- 1:44:46Ready now. Check. Boyer is second. Here's the 3-2 picture of Richardson. One round and his.
- 1:44:52Second round. Bobby Richardson out on strike.
- 1:44:56And that ends the seventh inning for the Yankees. No run. There was one hit. No errors. One man was left.
- 1:45:01The score at the end of the sixth and a half inning. Boston four. The Yankees three.
- 1:45:08The Yankees four.
- 1:45:16The Yankees five.
- 1:45:24Between Friday afternoon and Monday morning, there's an experience called a weekend. A weekend can be as noisy as a firecracker, well planned as an invasion, thrust-fading as a wet match, or quiet as a mouth.
- 1:45:40But all weekends have one thing in common. The magic quality of making people want to be together.
- 1:45:46Your car provides a big part of that magic, and with a tank full of improved Atlantic Imperial gasoline, your weekend takes on added magic.
- 1:45:55For Atlantic Imperial cleans where dirt hurts most in your car's engine.
- 1:46:00Atlantic keeps your car on the go, go, go, go, deep on the go, way up Atlantic.
- 1:46:18Bob Piefenauer is the new Yankee pitcher.
- 1:46:23Piefenauer coming on the relief. Reniff did a good job. Jim Bouton started, and after Bouton gave up the home run to Coniglia, Reniff came in and did a real good job of holding the red dot.
- 1:46:36The Yankees could stay in this game. And now it's up to Piefenauer to hold them.
- 1:46:42And to lead it off, it'll be Chuck Schilling. Schilling, Jones, and Horton.
- 1:46:48And now to bring you to play by play, here is Phil Bouton. Thank you, Joe.
- 1:46:54Bob Piefenauer, 6285 pounds, making his ninth appearance for the Yankees. He's won one and lost one.
- 1:47:01His last relief appearance at Baltimore on July the 1st. First two innings, didn't give up any runs.
- 1:47:09Schilling is two for three, flying to right, feed out an infield, single and single is centered. Piefenauer's knuckle is in there, strike one ball.
- 1:47:17The attendance today, 17,291.
- 1:47:23Next pitch, swing and a foul tip off the umpire's mask, and Johnny Rice shakes his head a couple of times. That hit him solid.
- 1:47:33Nothing and two on Schilling.
- 1:47:37Yankees scored three in the first. They've been blank the rest of the way. The Red Sox came up with two in the first and two in the fourth.
- 1:47:43Knuckle popped up, Kubek moves back in the shallow center field, bounds the glove, and makes the catch, one away.
- 1:47:53That brings up Dalton Jones, who fly to right, bounced to first, and struck out.
- 1:47:58On deck, Tony Horton.
- 1:48:04Piefenauer tells Pepitone, look out for the bunt, swing and a miss, strike one.
- 1:48:20Joe was busy talking to Bill Valentine, so he didn't see the sign, but he'll be ready anyway.
- 1:48:27The umpire hit on the ground, foul the first, backhanded by Pepitone. Nothing and two.
- 1:48:46The windup, pitch a soft line of right to Kubek, two out. Hit it right off the end of his bat.
- 1:48:55Here's Tony Horton, single the left line to right and bounce to the shortstop.
- 1:49:03Yankees are out hitting the Red Sox, nine eight.
- 1:49:08But the Red Sox lead four to three.
- 1:49:15Horton swings and misses an upper ball, strike one.
- 1:49:24Piefenauer doesn't waste much time, there's a swing and a bounce up in that head, right in the leg.
- 1:49:30Boy, he's really getting wacky.
- 1:49:33One in the mask, one in the leg.
- 1:49:36Nothing and two, as Piefenauer's throwing nothing but strikes out there.
- 1:49:41On deck is Felix Manchere, the two strike pitch, line to left center field, that's going to be in for a base hit.
- 1:49:47Off the wall, Tommy Church backing up, up with it, and Horton's in with a double.
- 1:49:52The ball's made a good drive for that ball.
- 1:49:55He leaped high, but it was over his glove and hit the scoreboard.
- 1:50:00Horton doubles the left center, the first hit off Piefenauer, that makes for the Red Sox.
- 1:50:05Horton's second base hit, here's Manchere who has walked, lined to left and struck out.
- 1:50:11Red Sox leading 4-3 in the bottom of the seventh.
- 1:50:23Manchere swings in with his strike one on deck, Lee's coming.
- 1:50:35Ramos is up in the Yankee both hands.
- 1:50:41Piefenauer's set to live as a foul outside of fair, driving the Yankee dugout.
- 1:50:47Nothing and two.
- 1:50:55Piefenauer rubs up the new ball.
- 1:51:06Now the right hander's set.
- 1:51:08His pitch is lined to left field, Church coming in.
- 1:51:11He hit the ball and a throw to the plate will not be in time, and the Red Sox lead 5-3.
- 1:51:25It's a single for Manchere, the left field, driving in Tony Horton.
- 1:51:31And what Church tried to do on that ball was let Horton think he was going to catch it on the fly.
- 1:51:35The only trouble was, it's too out and he'd be running anyway.
- 1:51:38And then the ball hit about six inches from Church's leg, and he could not get his glove on it.
- 1:51:43It actually caromed off both legs, and he had to pick it up.
- 1:51:46And that fraction of a second caused him getting the runner at the plate. Thomas takes the ball.
- 1:51:51Manchere went to second on the throw to the plate, and for Manchere now that's his 59th room battered end of the year.
- 1:51:58He leaves the American League in that department.
- 1:52:01Nuppert's one out and missed, one on one.
- 1:52:13So it's two out, a double by Horton and a single by Manchere, swinging a miss, strike two.
- 1:52:21And as deep in our is getting two quick strikes on all the Red Sox hitters.
- 1:52:30Manchere's got quick reds.
- 1:52:34Pitch outside, two balls, two strikes.
- 1:52:40That was a big run for the Red Sox, puts them two up over the Yankees here on the bottom of the seventh.
- 1:52:49Two-two pitch outside, ball three. Full count, three and two. On deck is Kanigliaro.
- 1:53:11The stretch and the pitch foul back out of play.
- 1:53:17The ball went right into the broadcasting booth where Ted Gaudi and Mel Parnell do the game for the Red Sox.
- 1:53:30Three balls, two strikes, two outs. Manchere at second.
- 1:53:39Pitch swing and a foul tip.
- 1:53:45Off the end of Howard's glove, so Thomas gets a life.
- 1:53:55Leon Wagner is just homing in the eighth with one on to give the Indians a four to two lead.
- 1:54:00They're still playing the bottom of the eighth out in Cleveland. Terry Pritching.
- 1:54:03There's a flying ball going foul down the right field line. Lee Thomas broke his bat.
- 1:54:10So he'll go back for a new one.
- 1:54:14And he's getting a new piece of lumber wheel pause for station identification.
- 1:54:19Your attention please. You are listening to Yankees Baseball over WOKO 1460 Albany, New York. Thank you.
- 1:54:36Thomas is ready. Keep an hour to live as it's up foul near the Red Sox dugout. Pepperton backhand to Mark Chalongy leaning into the dugout.
- 1:54:47Boy, he made that look easy. It was a difficult chance. But the Red Sox come up with one run on two hits. No Yankee errors. One man left.
- 1:54:55And at the end of seven full innings is the Red Sox five, the Yankees three.
- 1:55:02After you've been on the road for several hours, you're ready to stop for a stretch.
- 1:55:21By now your windshield may have picked up some road dust. Your gasoline gauge is way down too.
- 1:55:26Then straight ahead you see the Red Ball sign, Atlantic Red Ball Dealer Service. And in you go for a tank full of Atlantic Imperial gasoline and guaranteed Red Ball service.
- 1:55:38Your Red Ball dealer will always clean your windshield, weather permitting, and offer to check your oil or your gasoline purchase is free.
- 1:55:45This offer may vary. In some states the service never varies. It's for every customer, every time.
- 1:55:53So drive in where you see the Red Ball sign and keep on the go with Atlantic.
- 1:56:00They get up to that 500 mark. They're just one game under 500. They win this one and they will be at that magic mark. A trail by two going into the eighth. It'll be Kuvec, Treschen, Howard to face Manboquette.
- 1:56:26Manboquette delivers a curve, hit in the ground, a first base, off the glove and then in again and a throw to Manboquette in time.
- 1:56:32And Horton caught that ball with his bare hand. He's shaking it now. He went down for that ball and took a wicked hop.
- 1:56:38And it hit his bare hand and he juggled it momentarily but was able to hold on to it and flip to Manboquette for the up.
- 1:56:45One way. Here's Treschen. He's over three. He's flying to center, flying to right and pops his short.
- 1:56:59Horton moves in at first now. Somebody from the Red Sox fans yelled for him to look out for the bondage.
- 1:57:08Chris Sasami takes it high, ball one. Howard on deck.
- 1:57:21Manbo gets the sign from Tillman. Delivers outside, ball two to another.
- 1:57:42Two-nothing pitches, a curve over strike called a good change of curve ball. Thank you for three runs off Manboquette in the first inning.
- 1:57:51But since that first inning, he has not allowed more than one man on base in any inning.
- 1:58:01A fastball swing and a missed strike to two and two.
- 1:58:14Nobody on here in the top of the eighth. Right hander kicks, delivers a foul back out of play.
- 1:58:38Still two and two on Treschen. Curve is lying foul outside of first, bouncing into the stand. Still two and two.
- 1:59:03Manboquette taking a little extra time. He winds, his curve is outside, and it's a full count, three and two.
- 1:59:22Big pitch in the ball game coming up on deck, Elton Howard. Here's the payoff bet.
- 1:59:29Drive base hit to right field by Treschen, the arrow in. He's up with it, and Treschen's on with a line single to right field.
- 1:59:38And that brings the potential gang run to the plate, Elton Howard.
- 1:59:47Ten hits now for the Yankees in the ball game, same as the Red Sox.
- 1:59:51Elliott is flying to center, struck out, bounce to the shortstop. On deck is Pepperton.
- 1:59:59And Dick Raddus gets up again in the Red Sox full fence.
- 2:00:03Treschen first, Boston holding the line, stretched by Manbo.
- 2:00:08It's to Howard, high and outside ball one.
- 2:00:20He's hit a home run in the previous two games against the Red Sox.
- 2:00:32Stretch again.
- 2:00:34Treschen's hit a high in the air, and it's going to be off the wall, and just missed him a home run by Inchett.
- 2:00:50Tommy Treschen became confused. I think he thought it was in there.
- 2:00:56Maybe I'm exaggerating, but it looked to me no more than an insta-beam or home run.
- 2:01:04I don't think you're exaggerating at all, Phil. Treschen thought it was a home run, and it was a second base.
- 2:01:08He knows now the play's over, nothing he can do.
- 2:01:11And Howard, who was running hard all the way, just about got himself trapped between first and second.
- 2:01:16That ball missed a home run by a matter of a foot or so.
- 2:01:20And I'm telling you, it hit coming down, it seemed to hit just below the top of the fence where the screen meets the fence.
- 2:01:28A high drive to deep left center.
- 2:01:32And Tommy, who is a real good base runner and very fast, is kicking the bag now down his second base because that was a big play.
- 2:01:38Howard would have easily gone to second.
- 2:01:40Treschen possibly could have scored with a chance to go to third, and that would have put the tying run at second base.
- 2:01:47And the first base to end is Yankee, that first is second, with one out in the batter is Pepitone.
- 2:01:53Pepitone is two for three, double a right, fly to center, single a right, and here comes Billy Herman.
- 2:02:00And they were stalling to give Raditz a little extra time, and let's see if Herman is going to bring in Raditz.
- 2:02:09I tell you, Howard will never come close to getting a home run and ending up with one of the longest singles you've ever seen in his life.
- 2:02:20And it had to be quick thinking by Howard to get back to first.
- 2:02:23He was better than two-thirds of the way down at second.
- 2:02:26You can see his spike marks out there in the infield where he had a stop and turn around.
- 2:02:30And the only thing that saved him was when the throw came into second base, Schilling went to tag treks and wasted that fraction of a second.
- 2:02:38But while we've got time out there, let's turn it over to Joe.
- 2:02:42In other baseball, the Washington Senators lead the Detroit Tigers by the score of 5-3 in the bottom half of the seventh inning.
- 2:02:49Withersham, Fox, and Nishwicks all working for Detroit, Narrowman Bridges working for Washington.
- 2:02:56Horton hit his 18th home run of the year in the fifth with nobody on, locking a fourth with one man on.
- 2:03:02They're going to make a breaking change and that's the reaction that the Airdrieck Raddatz is going in for the Red Sox to replace Bill Mambo's catch.
- 2:03:12At the end of eighth inning, it's the Cleveland Indians four and the Baltimore Orioles two.
- 2:03:18The Airdrieck Rappers against Perry and the tie, the 2-2 tie was broken by Leon Wagner who hit a home run the eighth with a man on.
- 2:03:33In the National League, the Amos Cardinals lead, the New York Mets one of the under four, Perky, Morris St. Louis, Sisko, Miller, and Cole all working for New York.
- 2:03:45At the end of eighth inning, it's the home run the fourth with nobody on for the Mets.
- 2:03:49Six ninety-four foot off you want to get a seven.
- 2:04:00Bill Mambo's catch gets a nice hand as he walks off the field.
- 2:04:04Six ninety-four foot off you want to end a seven, Nutshall against Burdette.
- 2:04:08Burdette has replaced Polinsky, one of the Phillies, and Harper a home run the fifth with one man on.
- 2:04:14Burdette has a six ninety-four and Pittsburgh two.
- 2:04:16At the end of five, Fisher against Brennan Law, Rico Cardi a home run in the fifth with a man on.
- 2:04:21Bob Bailey hit one for Pittsburgh in the first with nobody on.
- 2:04:25Chicago four, San Francisco three at the end of four, Goal and replaced Herbill in the second inning for the Giants and Bob Buell is pitching for the Cubs.
- 2:04:35Jim Rayard a home run in the third with a man on for San Francisco.
- 2:04:38Don Landrup in the first with one man on for the Cubs.
- 2:04:43The Caps will use Austin, Houston will pitch Claude Ramon.
- 2:04:48So that's the baseball as Rick Raddatz comes on with base on as the first and second one man out and Joe Pepitone the hitter.
- 2:04:56Yes, that's about as long a single as you'll ever see.
- 2:04:59Oh, now it is.
- 2:05:00That's for sure.
- 2:05:02Big break for the Red Sox, but the Yankees still have the threat going.
- 2:05:06Pepitone is two for three and Raddatz is making his third appearance today.
- 2:05:10He's won four and lost six, but the big fellas having an off year as earned run average is five point five six.
- 2:05:17They don't call him the monster for nothing.
- 2:05:19He's six five two hundred and thirty five pounds.
- 2:05:26All right, Raddatz is ready.
- 2:05:27Pepitone steps in.
- 2:05:28The Red Sox lead five to three here on the top of the eighth.
- 2:05:37Bill Manbouchette worked seven in the third inning.
- 2:05:39He gave up eleven hits, didn't walk anybody, struck out three and has been charged with three runs.
- 2:05:46The pitch to Pepitone, almost hit him.
- 2:05:48Oh man, is Pepitone going down.
- 2:05:50And he turns around, looks out at Raddatz, but with a grin.
- 2:05:55He doesn't want to make this big fella any madder than he is right now.
- 2:06:00I'm telling you, there were quick reflexes by Pepitone.
- 2:06:07Stretch by Raddatz.
- 2:06:10His pitch, he held up in his tie ball two.
- 2:06:14Two and nothing.
- 2:06:15And Raddatz was not too happy with that ball.
- 2:06:20Right now there's very little that's making Raddatz happy.
- 2:06:27Two balls, no strikes on Joe.
- 2:06:32The stretch, the pitch, he popped it up.
- 2:06:35The infield fly roll is called.
- 2:06:37Pepitone is automatically out and Schilling makes the catch.
- 2:06:45Joe Raddatz gets a big out and it'll bring up Pepitone, rather Lopez.
- 2:06:50That's a single left in the first inning driving in two runs.
- 2:06:53Then he bounced a short hit and it was double play.
- 2:06:57The stretch remains a second, Howard at first.
- 2:07:08On deck, Roger reposed.
- 2:07:13And Hector Lopez wants the umpire to take a look at the ball.
- 2:07:20He's going to throw it out of play.
- 2:07:31Alright, Lopez steps in.
- 2:07:38Stretch by Raddatz. His pitch is high, ball one.
- 2:07:53Howard at first, stretch at second with two outs.
- 2:07:56Red Sox leading 5-3.
- 2:07:59The stretch, the pitch is lined up.
- 2:08:02Right at least, Thomas.
- 2:08:09Thomas had a bend down to catch it.
- 2:08:12It's all for the Yankees in the top of the eighth, no runs, two hits.
- 2:08:16No Red Sox there, there's two men left at the end of seven and a half.
- 2:08:20The Red Sox find the Yankees three.
- 2:08:38Golden Tobacco, Winston.
- 2:08:43Full Flavored, Winston.
- 2:08:46Good taste, that's why.
- 2:08:49When I change to Winston, I change for good.
- 2:08:53Cause I got good taste, like I knew I would.
- 2:08:57Winston taste good, like it should.
- 2:09:00When you change to Winston, change for good.
- 2:09:06Cause Winston taste good, like a cigarette should.
- 2:09:11Winston taste good, like a cigarette should.
- 2:09:16Winston.
- 2:09:26Ross Machito is going out to play right field.
- 2:09:29In place of Hector Lopez, Hector is standing out there with his hands on his hips.
- 2:09:34He has not moved as yet.
- 2:09:36We'll let you know when Hector takes that first step.
- 2:09:39And Hector's turning around, he's going to go in the bullpen.
- 2:09:42Very smart move by Lopez, he's not going to run all the way in the dugout.
- 2:09:46The Yankee bullpen is right in the back of him.
- 2:09:49Take the glasses off, flip them to Ross Machito.
- 2:09:57And Bob Kieffenau will be pitching to Tony Conigliaro, Eddie Pursu and Bob Tillman here on the bottom of the eighth.
- 2:10:03The Red Sox leading 5-3.
- 2:10:09Conigliaro has walked out twice and almost deep into the screen.
- 2:10:14That was an own run with a man on that put the Red Sox out in front, 4-3 in the fourth inning.
- 2:10:19And they added another run in the seventh.
- 2:10:21The pitch to Tony, high outside, ball one.
- 2:10:31Next pitch, swing and a miss.
- 2:10:33Strike one, one-on-one.
- 2:10:37Conigliaro can never cut down on his strikeouts, he's going to be some hitter.
- 2:10:41But he's got plenty of power, there's no doubt about that.
- 2:10:44Strike two, you went after a bad knuckle.
- 2:10:52He has 16 homers and 38 runs out of them.
- 2:10:55Another knuckle, he pops this one up.
- 2:10:58Boyer and Howard over there, Boyer falling and makes the catch right alongside the Yankee dugout.
- 2:11:06That brings up Eddie Bursu, single or left, lined or right and struck out.
- 2:11:21We're in the bottom of the eighth inning here at Fenway Park.
- 2:11:32Stephen Howard's first pitch gets away from Howard, back to the screen, ball one.
- 2:11:41Jura will give us a wrap-up of all the scores at the end of this inning.
- 2:11:50Stephen Howard's next pitch is swinging a miss, strike one, one-on-one, that ball really dense.
- 2:12:05For two-ass the time, looks like a butterfly, we have a big yellow butterfly flying around in front of home plate.
- 2:12:18The knuckle is outside, sometimes that knuckleball looks like a butterfly coming in.
- 2:12:23Boyer dances up there.
- 2:12:26I think that Jura not only looks like an all-star announcer, but a Hollywood star.
- 2:12:31He wears these dark sunglasses.
- 2:12:34Mysterious looking, line drive to right field, Machito makes that shot.
- 2:12:39Holy cow, I want to tell you, that knuckle came up with a jam right there.
- 2:12:46There was no business catching that ball.
- 2:12:49It was a long line drive and he got as low to the ground without sliding as anybody I've ever seen,
- 2:12:55and made a running one-hand catch, inches from the ground.
- 2:13:00Beautiful play.
- 2:13:05He ran almost all the way in the first base after making that play, that's how fast he was going.
- 2:13:10Nice film it. One for three, double a right his last time up.
- 2:13:16The amazing thing about that, Bill, is he was thinking away from it, and he was running almost parallel to the ground.
- 2:13:23Ha, still a new knuckle inside ball two, two and nothing.
- 2:13:36Dick Hamilton is throwing in the Yankee bullpen, two out, nobody on, five three, the Red Sox lead.
- 2:13:43There's a strike on the outside corner, two and one.
- 2:13:56On deck is Dick Raddick.
- 2:14:02A good foul to the left of the plate, two and two.
- 2:14:12A hand for the Red Sox ball boy, really hot.
- 2:14:16He's got about eight balls in his back pocket.
- 2:14:19He really looks funny running with his pocket sagging, no more hitting the back of his heels.
- 2:14:26Little thumb, the pitch outside, three and two. His body's got the mumps.
- 2:14:36He's got bulges all over him.
- 2:14:39It's a full count on Tillman.
- 2:14:42A line drive base hit the center field. Actually it wasn't a real line drive, he hit it off the end of the bat with a lot of English, but it went right over second base.
- 2:14:50Nobody could get it.
- 2:14:53Third hit off Tiesenauer, and here is Dick Raddick.
- 2:14:58And I guess Raddick is wondering, are they really getting on him here?
- 2:15:07A bad hitter though, he's been up 15 times with five base hits.
- 2:15:11That's a 333 average, that's a right handed foul going off the end of the bat.
- 2:15:16Right on the Red Sox dugout.
- 2:15:19Strike one.
- 2:15:23He has one home run and one run battered in.
- 2:15:35Next pitch is a low one a month.
- 2:15:44Tiesenauer's set, the level's low, ball two, two a month.
- 2:15:51Each team has 11 base hits.
- 2:15:59Tillman with a short lead at first. There's a swing and a miss.
- 2:16:03Strike two, two and two.
- 2:16:18Tiesenauer gets the sign from Howard.
- 2:16:22Now he's ready. Foul tipped, back to the screen.
- 2:16:36Tiesenauer rubs up the new ball.
- 2:16:40The Yankees will have the bottom third of their order coming up in the top of the ninth.
- 2:16:46Knuckler is over, strike three, ball.
- 2:16:49The Yankees have a little bit of a ball out.
- 2:16:52Shaking his head a little bit, thought it might have been outside.
- 2:16:55Well the Red Sox, no runs, one hit, no Yankees errors, one man left.
- 2:16:58And at the end of eight, it's the Red Sox five, the Yankees three, and now we turn the mic over to Joe Cooper as we pause for station identification.
- 2:17:08Hi, let's hear from Joe G.
- 2:17:28Okay, Phil, and the Detroit-Washington game is at the end of seven now.
- 2:17:32Washington six to Detroit three, Locker two run home, Horton has a home run, and the fifth with nobody on, that's Horton, Willie Horton, 18th home run of the year.
- 2:17:42Fine against Sherry, both in relation.
- 2:17:44Final score is Cleveland four, Baltimore two.
- 2:17:48Pappas the loser, Terry the winner, Wagner home run the eighth with one man on, that was a big blast, and Cleveland, now they have won 18 of their last 22.
- 2:18:0219 out of 23, 18 out of 22, 19 out of 23.
- 2:18:09Leon Wagner a big home run, Terry gave up six hits, Pappas gave up only seven, the real pictures battle.
- 2:18:16Minnesota will use Pascual, Kansas City will use Talbot in that game.
- 2:18:20Chicago and Los Angeles not get underway.
- 2:18:23St. Louis four, Mets one, Murky all the way for St. Louis, Krull in relief for the Mets.
- 2:18:29Buczak home run the sixth with nobody on, so it's at least a five to one ball game now, St. Louis no batting, Lewis in the fourth with nobody on for the Mets.
- 2:18:37End of eight now, it's Cincinnati four, Philadelphia one, Nuts all against Burdette, Burdette in relief for Balenciaga, Harper has a two run homer.
- 2:18:44Milwaukee four and Pittsburgh two, Fisher against the law, Padurone a home run the fifth, Bailey in the first, Rico Cardi had one point of brave in the fifth with the man on.
- 2:18:56Chicago four and San Francisco three again the fourth ball against McDaniel, Porto in the lead, Carter two run homer, Landerman two run homer.
- 2:19:03Los Angeles one, Houston nothing, bottom of the second off team against Ramon.
- 2:19:07That's it Bill, all right Joe here's Roger Rappoll, over three today swings and misses a fastball strike one.
- 2:19:15Roger has struck out, fouled with a catcher and slides deep to center field.
- 2:19:21The Yankees need two to tie here in the top of the ninth, as Ditriders firing those little BBs up there to the plate.
- 2:19:29Wines delivered, swing and a fast hit back, nothing in two.
- 2:19:41Boyer is on deck and then we'll have a pinch hitter for Bob Pippenau.
- 2:19:46Jake Gibbs is running in from the bullpen.
- 2:19:54We'll wait and see though.
- 2:20:00Raditz came more overhand than we've ever seen him throw, he's been throwing a sidearm almost underhand.
- 2:20:07First strike out for Raditz and it brings up Boyer, cleatspin red hot, single in the second, single in the fourth and doubled in the seventh.
- 2:20:16Three for three for Boyer who has an eleven game hitting streak.
- 2:20:22Please talking to Johnny Wright, he wants to make sure he's settled in the plate before that Raditz is ready to pitch.
- 2:20:28Actually Raditz doesn't have to look for a sign, he just rares back and fires.
- 2:20:34Pitch to Boyer, please start the front take to strike.
- 2:20:45And Jake Gibbs is coming out on deck swinging a couple of bats.
- 2:20:50And he's fouled back to the screen, strike two, that's five straight strikes that Raditz has thrown this in.
- 2:20:55Three to repose, two to Boyer.
- 2:21:00Now when he can throw as hard as he does, there's no sense wasting him.
- 2:21:09One out in the top of the ninth, the Red Sox lead five to three. Raditz winds, delivers way outside ball one.
- 2:21:32Next pitch is hitting the air to left field, didn't get the good wood on it, Thomas is right there moving in now and makes the count.
- 2:21:40He hits that one near the handle, it's two out and here's Jake Gibbs batting for Bob Sheefin out.
- 2:21:51Gibbs batting 333, been up six times with two bases, one double.
- 2:22:03Bobby Richardson on deck.
- 2:22:14He's down to their last out here in the top of the ninth inning.
- 2:22:23Raditz delivers his swing and a miss, strike one.
- 2:22:33Gibbs takes a couple extra swings outside the bat of the box, trying to get real loose.
- 2:22:40Next pitch, swing and a miss, strike two. One fastball is outside, one he crowded up.
- 2:22:46So it's nothing in two.
- 2:22:55Raditz winds, kicks, delivers foul back off the screen.
- 2:23:16He's got that hand already. His pitch low and inside, one ball, two strikes.
- 2:23:27Not too many people leaving the ball park, but a few have gotten up and they're standing in the aisles.
- 2:23:36The one ball, two strikes pitch. Struck them out. High fastball. Raditz retires the Yankees in order.
- 2:23:46Nothing is lost. The ball game is over, the final score, the Red Sox 5, the Yankees 3, and Joe Garagiolo will be right back in one minute with the totals and the highlights.
- 2:23:58We're honored once again to be broadcasting from the cave of the incredible 2,500-year-old brewmaster. Sir, we think that today's Valentine beer is the best beer yet.
- 2:24:07I wonder, were you around when the very first beer was invented?
- 2:24:10Oh, yes.
- 2:24:11And when was that?
- 2:24:12Well, it was in the year four and a half months. It wasn't even a year yet when beer was invented. It wasn't even a year.
- 2:24:20And I'll never forget that beer. It was mainly foam. It was such foam. It was so much foam that you had to drink for two days before you got to the beer.
- 2:24:31Whereas with Valentine beer...
- 2:24:33With Valentine there's just enough foam and just enough beer, and it's loaded with all kinds of wonderful flavors. It's the beer with spirit. Are you the man from Valentine?
- 2:24:43Yes, I am.
- 2:24:44Why am I telling you this? You should be telling me.
- 2:24:46I'm delighted to hear you tell me this.
- 2:24:47You're some dummy.
- 2:24:48If you want to start living a life that's right, beer, live it with spirit.
- 2:24:54Valentine beer, there's more spirit to it.
- 2:25:20Well, the story of this ball game is wrapped up in the pitching of Mom Boquette and Dick Radditt and some timely hitting especially by Conigliaro and Mancia.
