- 14:53Speaker 6: one of my favorites there from the younger space of
- 14:56Speaker 6: artists that are taking over Punjabi hip hop. And now
- 14:59Speaker 6: let's bring on our own Niche, somebody that plays a
- 15:02Speaker 6: lot of the younger artists on his show, and let's

- 18:23Speaker 6: And that song Baller certainly grabbed my attention when it
- 18:26Speaker 6: came out a few years ago and to me really
- 18:29Speaker 6: does demonstrate what the purity of the Indian hip hop space,
- 18:33Speaker 6: and specifically the Punjabi hip hop space is all about.
- 18:36Speaker 5: This is Kanwar's first song.
- 18:38Speaker 20: Called when Jabbi Is.

- 20:42Speaker 6: it's called It came out on the Passage to India album.
- 20:47Speaker 6: And this is how the story went. Knwar and I
- 20:50Speaker 6: were working together. We had just met recently, and he
- 20:54Speaker 6: came to my bedroom studio at the time, literally my
- 20:57Speaker 6: bedroom studio, and he wrapped that first verse to me,
- 21:02Speaker 6: and he had not written down the second verse yet.
- 21:04Speaker 6: It was just one verse that he had literally is
- 21:06Speaker 6: a novelty and he says, hey, Sammy, I had this
- 21:08Speaker 6: one verse. And I remember saying to him, go back
- 21:13Speaker 6: and write the second verse and we're gonna record this tomorrow.
- 21:17Speaker 6: And he actually did, went back, wrote the second verse,
- 21:22Speaker 6: and that right there became the very first song Benjabi
- 21:25Speaker 6: hip hop has ever recorded, right there, called.

- 28:48Speaker 6: so honored to have you on for what you've meant
- 28:52Speaker 6: to our space and and just in not only Banjabi
- 28:56Speaker 6: hip hop, but just our story of telling the diaspora
- 28:59Speaker 6: story out here of North American music and so canoir.
- 29:04Speaker 5: It's not how to have you on, my man.
- 29:06Speaker 16: My guy, thank you, my guy, thank you, thank you.
- 29:12Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 29:13Speaker 6: Brother, So, I, of course I know a lot about
- 29:16Speaker 6: your story. I've I've I've had the fine honor of
- 29:20Speaker 6: being a fan from a from a very long time.
- 29:22Speaker 6: And you know, I of course people know you as
- 29:26Speaker 6: you started off by by the great work you've done
- 29:29Speaker 6: with people like Jazzy B and with Tiger Style and
- 29:32Speaker 6: so many other artists like that at the time, right
- 29:35Speaker 6: and and you know that that impact still to this
- 29:39Speaker 6: day lives pretty loud. And anytime I mentioned your name,
- 29:44Speaker 6: people right away refer to that work that you did. Uh,
- 29:48Speaker 6: Connie man, you you've been in this space for such
- 29:50Speaker 6: a long time, you know, and for people to remember
- 29:53Speaker 6: that impact in those verses that you put out from
- 29:55Speaker 6: from a while back, brother, you know, tell me how
- 29:58Speaker 6: does that feel?
- 30:03Speaker 16: Overall? It's a great feeling.
- 30:04Speaker 9: But as an artist, I'm still looking for closure from
- 30:10Speaker 9: certain aspects.
- 30:11Speaker 16: In any artist's career, he wants or she wants to
- 30:16Speaker 16: be recognized for what they were. You know, what they're.
- 30:19Speaker 9: Offering is, and my my story does have some long
- 30:24Speaker 9: givity to it, longevity. And then at the same time,
- 30:27Speaker 9: as an artist, I gotta be real, I am a
- 30:30Speaker 9: late bloomer kind of guy.
- 30:33Speaker 16: I've lived.
- 30:34Speaker 9: You know. One thing about myself as a fella that
- 30:36Speaker 9: makes music is I've actually had some downtime, some great
- 30:41Speaker 9: times sometimes when I had to kind of disappear, disappear
- 30:45Speaker 9: from the scene for a minute. Yeah, well I I yes,
- 30:50Speaker 9: I've been in it. But now it's my time to
- 30:54Speaker 9: kind of give it a good consistent effort so that
- 30:59Speaker 9: people can have fun and enjoy what I got to
- 31:03Speaker 9: bring to the table as far as this music stuff
- 31:06Speaker 9: and culture, maybe even a little bit of fashion too.
- 31:09Speaker 16: Even though a lot of these guys beat me to.
- 31:10Speaker 9: The punt, I still have my own offering, and I
- 31:15Speaker 9: just appreciate people lending in here and being excited about
- 31:19Speaker 9: me kind of showing myself again and letting people.
- 31:23Speaker 6: Hear what I got.
- 31:24Speaker 9: I'm very, very grateful for people's support. You and Anjo,
- 31:29Speaker 9: you know, all my friends down there in southern California.
- 31:34Speaker 16: Up here in the Bay people have been down with
- 31:37Speaker 16: me and Rock and with a movement for a long
- 31:39Speaker 16: long time.
- 31:40Speaker 9: And you know, I'm gonna I'm gonna be mentioning all
- 31:43Speaker 9: these people later. But yes, you know, Jazzy, he done
- 31:49Speaker 9: so much to my life. I thank him every.
- 31:51Speaker 16: Time I see him.
- 31:53Speaker 9: It's not every day a big artist like that will
- 31:55Speaker 9: give you, give you a chance. And he did Tigers
- 32:00Speaker 9: Yourself from me, Low Heat from Neil, all of them guys,
- 32:06Speaker 9: you know, all the d days down that way, and
- 32:08Speaker 9: I built some great relationship and they're all you know,
- 32:13Speaker 9: they're all supporting, and I really I'm really excited, to
- 32:17Speaker 9: be honest with you. I got a little bit of
- 32:19Speaker 9: jitters and there's some nervousness there, but that you know,
- 32:23Speaker 9: that's natural.
- 32:24Speaker 16: I've kind of been in and out of this stuff.
- 32:27Speaker 16: But I promise you guys, this year, I'm gonna give
- 32:29Speaker 16: y'all straight heat. Rock.
- 32:32Speaker 6: Well, you're off to a flying start, my man. This
- 32:35Speaker 6: brand new single that you've just dropped with of course
- 32:40Speaker 6: you know people don't know this, but another Bay native
- 32:43Speaker 6: and then you have the two of you guys getting
- 32:45Speaker 6: together and the song is called from the Bay. You
- 32:48Speaker 6: just dropped it here April twentieth. It's a great collaboration
- 32:51Speaker 6: amongst I would say two of the best in our space.
- 32:55Speaker 6: How is it working with He's a great dude, by
- 32:58Speaker 6: the way, shout out to fate or are homie right there?
- 33:00Speaker 16: Well, that's that's kind of why I worked with him. Man,
- 33:04Speaker 16: he's a great dude.
- 33:05Speaker 5: You said it.
- 33:07Speaker 16: The Ombreak is a one, a gentleman and a scholar, and.
- 33:12Speaker 9: He deserves to be in the space, and he's a
- 33:14Speaker 9: fellow that day in and day out, considers this artistry
- 33:18Speaker 9: stuff a full time job.
- 33:22Speaker 16: The song was not pressured or rushed or forced.
- 33:27Speaker 9: This stuff a lot of the music, I mean, naturally
- 33:31Speaker 9: it represents our lives.
- 33:32Speaker 16: Me and Butte Cross had to be real with you.
- 33:35Speaker 16: I was walking down the street. He's seen me. He
- 33:38Speaker 16: waved me down a.
- 33:39Speaker 9: Year prior to do the song. He said we should
- 33:42Speaker 9: do something, and I said we should do something. We
- 33:44Speaker 9: took a picture and that was that.
- 33:46Speaker 16: A year later, I had a song that.
- 33:51Speaker 9: You know, we're just working on, and I'm like, you know,
- 33:53Speaker 9: I could use some accompaniment.
- 33:55Speaker 16: As instantly it's.
- 33:56Speaker 9: His name popped up and so I I just went
- 34:00Speaker 9: with a gut feeling and the rest was history. He
- 34:03Speaker 9: delivered an awesome sixteen bars. You might actually even hear
- 34:09Speaker 9: me and him more in the future.
- 34:12Speaker 16: We really get along.
- 34:13Speaker 4: You know.
- 34:13Speaker 16: There's a gentleman between me and him. You know, there's
- 34:16Speaker 16: a there's some guys called bold friend Job. They his manager, Nicky.
- 34:21Speaker 16: You know it's I love to.
- 34:22Speaker 9: Give people back backstage passes to the music and what's happening,
- 34:27Speaker 9: because a lot of the stuff that I purpose you know,
- 34:31Speaker 9: not purposefully. You know, God has control over everything that's happening,
- 34:35Speaker 9: but for some odd reason. And then the stuff that
- 34:38Speaker 9: I'm involved in making, it's a team effort.
- 34:41Speaker 16: I've never done anything alone.
- 34:43Speaker 9: In fact, these last ten fifteen years, twenty years, almost
- 34:48Speaker 9: about seven, I's been working with a gentleman we call
- 34:51Speaker 9: up here in the Bay Area.
- 34:52Speaker 16: His name is Tone Capone. He's helped develop my style.
- 34:56Speaker 16: I owe a lot Dan.
- 34:57Speaker 9: So what I'm saying Sammy Woods today is that it
- 35:00Speaker 9: was a quite organic experience. It wasn't It wasn't no
- 35:05Speaker 9: you know, something that was forced. They came out naturally.
- 35:08Speaker 9: He deserves to be on that song. He is from
- 35:11Speaker 9: the Bay Area. You know, it's the music, most of
- 35:15Speaker 9: music that I'd like to work on, it's got to
- 35:19Speaker 9: have a message at this point in my life. Otherwise
- 35:22Speaker 9: I feel like my offering there's nothing to it now.
- 35:25Speaker 9: Some some of the songs, they are going to have
- 35:27Speaker 9: some stinky feel to it where you're like, what does
- 35:29Speaker 9: he even mean that song? But this one, I'm just
- 35:31Speaker 9: being straight out. I'm tired of waiting.
- 35:33Speaker 16: I'm from the Bay.
- 35:34Speaker 9: Area, I'm I'm gay oriented, I'm I'm fully ambitious even
- 35:40Speaker 9: at this age, and uh, you know, whatever gatekeepers there are,
- 35:45Speaker 9: you know, politely, please step out of the way. Let
- 35:48Speaker 9: me at least get off a little something. Let me,
- 35:52Speaker 9: you know, let me let y'all see what a little
- 35:54Speaker 9: before it's.
- 35:55Speaker 16: Uh, you know, the window of opportunity closes. It's the
- 35:58Speaker 16: right time right now.
- 35:59Speaker 9: I'm a lamer. It takes different people, different times, different
- 36:04Speaker 9: strokes for different folks, different I would love to be
- 36:07Speaker 9: that this next couple of years, I give y'all what
- 36:10Speaker 9: you deserve to hear, and then the.
- 36:13Speaker 16: Rest will be history, you know. I just yeah, what
- 36:16Speaker 16: everybody else is doing.
- 36:17Speaker 9: I just would love to kind of see what you
- 36:21Speaker 9: guys think about what I'm experimenting.
- 36:24Speaker 6: Beautiful Connie. You know I'm going to make now is
- 36:28Speaker 6: where I'm going to make my statement to you, and
- 36:32Speaker 6: I'm gonna i'd love to hear your feedback on the
- 36:35Speaker 6: following statement.
- 36:37Speaker 5: And my thought is.
- 36:41Speaker 6: Based on the fact that I was there in this
- 36:45Speaker 6: window of time when a lot of this stuff was
- 36:49Speaker 6: taking place here in the US, and specifically here in
- 36:52Speaker 6: the Bay Area along the West coast of the US,
- 36:55Speaker 6: and over here what was bubbling up was this confluence
- 36:59Speaker 6: of cultures, let's just call it, where hip hop culture
- 37:02Speaker 6: and our Punjabi culture were really starting to kind.
- 37:05Speaker 5: Of conjoin and become one.
- 37:07Speaker 6: And I'm, you know, here to tell you that the
- 37:11Speaker 6: very first person to actually start this genre and to
- 37:16Speaker 6: actually start doing this. Many people may not know this,
- 37:21Speaker 6: but the fact of the matter is it's the gentleman
- 37:23Speaker 6: on the line with me right now, kunwir Gil. And
- 37:27Speaker 6: so my statement and my question to you is this,
- 37:30Speaker 6: my statement is your ground zero for Punjabi hip hop
- 37:33Speaker 6: and it should be remembered as that going forward forever,
- 37:36Speaker 6: and whatever we can do to clarify the matter should
- 37:39Speaker 6: be done. But uh Kanwa, you've you've you've seen this
- 37:42Speaker 6: genre explode and become chart topping in what it is now?
- 37:50Speaker 6: What are your thoughts on your view of how the
- 37:53Speaker 6: genre has progressed and how it's evolved right in front
- 37:56Speaker 6: of you as being as I called it, ground zero
- 37:59Speaker 6: and I know that you're humbly put it as one
- 38:01Speaker 6: of the pioneers that you know, But what what what
- 38:05Speaker 6: is your observation on this progression of the space.
- 38:09Speaker 16: Well, I gotta be all the way honest.
- 38:15Speaker 9: The genre and the art from the culture is only
- 38:19Speaker 9: going to go as forward as a living artist can
- 38:23Speaker 9: take it forward. It's it's produced or the days. I
- 38:26Speaker 9: never leave out the DJ, it's the artist, it's the
- 38:30Speaker 9: men and women.
- 38:31Speaker 16: Involved in hip hop and hip hop as a whole.
- 38:34Speaker 16: But I will say, I gotta be real about this.
- 38:36Speaker 9: I just came back from a visit from India and
- 38:39Speaker 9: I'm visited to house and and you know, if he
- 38:45Speaker 9: was still alive, I'd say, I'm very excited about when
- 38:49Speaker 9: jab be hip hop and where it's going. But with
- 38:54Speaker 9: his pasting, it's I'm not. I'm just I'm I'm excited
- 39:00Speaker 9: about what he left us with and the material that
- 39:03Speaker 9: he left us with. But we got to really start
- 39:06Speaker 9: honoring our fellow artists a little bit more and start respecting.
- 39:10Speaker 9: And then the other artists themselves got also respect the
- 39:13Speaker 9: game a little bit too. But I miss what that
- 39:16Speaker 9: young brother was bringing to the game. Uh, there's a
- 39:21Speaker 9: there's an empty spot left now and now it's I'll
- 39:25Speaker 9: tell you a game. This this wrapping stuff, it's a sport.
- 39:31Speaker 16: Okay.
- 39:31Speaker 9: I want to say, whoever's listening, I want you all.
- 39:34Speaker 16: To know, is that what I look at this kid as.
- 39:36Speaker 9: It's a fun sport to.
- 39:37Speaker 16: Me without no trophy really, and the only reward a
- 39:41Speaker 16: lot of these brothers will get, whether it's Tucac or
- 39:44Speaker 16: Simon Lucia, Notorious b I G. Mac dra Jack. The
- 39:50Speaker 16: list goes on, stack bundles, nippy hustle. The only trophy
- 39:53Speaker 16: you get in this rap music stuff usually is a
- 39:56Speaker 16: hot bullet and then and then you become a leg.
- 40:00Speaker 16: And I'm just one of the type of people that
- 40:02Speaker 16: Bible and dabbled with it.
- 40:04Speaker 9: I haven't left such a strong mark yet. God willing
- 40:07Speaker 9: something happens. But yes, I'm depressed like everybody else.
- 40:12Speaker 16: As far as where it was going. That boy was
- 40:16Speaker 16: going to take it.
- 40:16Speaker 9: That man yet young man was going to take it,
- 40:19Speaker 9: and he had taken it to a whole other level,
- 40:22Speaker 9: and we as listeners and fellow artists got robbed of
- 40:26Speaker 9: some beautiful arts now without him being in the space.
- 40:31Speaker 9: The one thing I got to say about Punjabi people
- 40:34Speaker 9: and the human race as a whole is we're.
- 40:37Speaker 16: Strong people and the art is love and love never die.
- 40:43Speaker 9: You can kill you can kill us, but we're always
- 40:46Speaker 9: going to multiply. So yes, the young brother, he left
- 40:51Speaker 9: us with what he left us, and he did push
- 40:56Speaker 9: the art so much forward where now it's so good
- 40:59Speaker 9: that really if another artist it's a baton somewhat. The
- 41:07Speaker 9: spirit see this music stuff is magic.
- 41:10Speaker 16: Man. It's not just there is something you could see.
- 41:12Speaker 16: It's the emotion, it's a feeling.
- 41:16Speaker 3: You know.
- 41:17Speaker 9: We're hopeful people, man. The human race altogether is the
- 41:21Speaker 9: hopeful people. But Punjabi people were so proud, and sometimes
- 41:25Speaker 9: ask my of why are we so proud? Why do
- 41:27Speaker 9: we always raise our fists and say I'm Punjabi? So
- 41:31Speaker 9: I think it's because, you know, we're just hopeful people.
- 41:33Speaker 5: Man.
- 41:34Speaker 9: We made something out of messing man. I mean, we've
- 41:36Speaker 9: got a lot of rich people out here. As far
- 41:38Speaker 9: as Punjabi people, we touched a lot of different molks,
- 41:41Speaker 9: but if we chase our roots back. Most of us
- 41:44Speaker 9: come from just rice and lentiels Man very like deep struggles,
- 41:51Speaker 9: you know what I mean.
- 41:52Speaker 3: And so.
- 41:54Speaker 9: As a feed grows and turns into a plant, and
- 41:58Speaker 9: the plants leaves, you know, spread and do it sing
- 42:01Speaker 9: And when every culture has I mean, look at the
- 42:04Speaker 9: the look at that knowledge that these guys, God bless them,
- 42:07Speaker 9: they're doing great things. But let's not forget people like Sintina.
- 42:12Speaker 9: Let's not forget Srinder, Sinda, Let's lef for.
- 42:15Speaker 16: It, forget Cindersinda.
- 42:18Speaker 9: You know, the big the small artists on Moon Waters,
- 42:21Speaker 9: Bendra Kia, Tony Fabla, the.
- 42:23Speaker 16: List goes on.
- 42:24Speaker 27: You know what I mean.
- 42:26Speaker 16: We owe a lot of these guys.
- 42:27Speaker 9: And so when I'm doing the music or living the music,
- 42:31Speaker 9: I try my best to honor everybody in this because
- 42:36Speaker 9: it's no one man in this job.
- 42:38Speaker 16: We're all in it together.
- 42:40Speaker 9: And hey, let's all, you know, stay in a celebratory
- 42:43Speaker 9: mood and keep it pushing forward.
- 42:45Speaker 16: But yes, I'm overall, I'm very excited. I'm very excited
- 42:50Speaker 16: where music is going right now.
- 42:53Speaker 5: Thank you for that.
- 42:53Speaker 6: By the way, that was dope, very very cool. Can
- 42:56Speaker 6: can you do us the honor of introducing your track
- 43:01Speaker 6: from the Bay. Right now, we're about to play this thing,
- 43:03Speaker 6: and before we press play on this thing, and you,
- 43:05Speaker 6: you know you eat the stage here to introduce it
- 43:08Speaker 6: for us. My man, thank you for what you've done
- 43:11Speaker 6: for the culture. You know, as I said to you,
- 43:14Speaker 6: your ground zero and and here's to the next phase
- 43:20Speaker 6: of your career and to all the great things ahead.
- 43:22Speaker 5: My man, thank you very much.

- 57:04Speaker 5: Shout out to Kunwar for joining me today. And if
- 57:07Speaker 5: there's anything I want you to take.
- 57:08Speaker 6: Away from this episode, it's this the history of Punjabi
- 57:12Speaker 6: hip hop as we've been told it for the last
- 57:14Speaker 6: twenty years or so, twenty five years or so, skip's
- 57:17Speaker 6: a step. We start the story with Bohemia in the
- 57:21Speaker 6: early two thousands, and we treat that as ground zero.
- 57:25Speaker 6: But the music doesn't lie, the dates don't lie. And
- 57:28Speaker 6: the artist who was rapping in Punjabi in California, recording it,
- 57:31Speaker 6: releasing it, building an audience for it before any of
- 57:35Speaker 6: the names we now call legends had ever stepped to
- 57:37Speaker 6: a mic, was sitting in that interview chair today.
- 57:41Speaker 5: His name is Kunwar Gill.
- 57:43Speaker 6: I'm not asking you to take Bohemia's place in the
- 57:46Speaker 6: cannon away from this at all, or trying to shade
- 57:50Speaker 6: Bohemia's contribution to the space. I'm asking you to make
- 57:55Speaker 6: room next to him for the man who walked first.
- 57:58Speaker 6: That's how genres work, That's how every American art form
- 58:02Speaker 6: got told, jazz, hip hop, rock, whatever. You can go
- 58:06Speaker 6: back and you can find the artist who is there
- 58:08Speaker 6: before the artist everybody knows, and you say their name
- 58:11Speaker 6: out loud. So when somebody asks you where Punjabi hip
- 58:15Speaker 6: hop started, and they will, you give them two names. Bohemia, yes,
- 58:20Speaker 6: but also Kannowar Gil because the Timeline says, so tomorrow
- 58:25Speaker 6: will get into the wider field of Indian hip hop.
- 58:28Speaker 5: So make sure you join me tomorrow morning at nine
- 58:30Speaker 5: am for that show. I've had a great time hanging
- 58:33Speaker 5: out with you guys. Folks. I'll leave you with this
- 58:35Speaker 5: song right here. It's another one of Kanwar's first songs.
- 58:39Speaker 20: It's called Ashiki.
