New York State formed the Riley Commission in 1981 to determine the cause of sickness in a number of cases involving gold jewelry. It discovered that someone had taken gold brachytherapy seeds contaminated with radion-222 and smelted them down to make jewelry. Individual wearing the jewelry frequently developed skin cancer or other diseases when wearing the jewelry. This was publicly revealed and investigated.
