Transcript
- 0:04Speaker 1: He hello friends from across the nation, around the world,
- 0:08Speaker 1: and possibly throughout the universe. I'm Martin, and you are
- 0:14Speaker 1: listening to Dad's bedtime stories. Last week I did an
- 0:18Speaker 1: episode called The Mage, the Dragon, and the Level Up,
- 0:23Speaker 1: which was a magic Library episode and sort of a
- 0:27Speaker 1: lit RPG adventure that I felt like I didn't really
- 0:31Speaker 1: get to finish, so I did another episode and I
- 0:37Speaker 1: still don't feel like it's finished. So if you want
- 0:39Speaker 1: more episodes of this, just be sure to leave me
- 0:42Speaker 1: a message on speak pipe or the Google form. I
- 0:46Speaker 1: had quite a few asking me to do the next
- 0:49Speaker 1: one from this series, and for those of you long
- 0:52Speaker 1: awaiting some of my other things, don't worry. I just
- 0:55Speaker 1: have so many ideas that it's hard to decide which
- 0:57Speaker 1: one to do. We'll continue with an app from the
- 1:00Speaker 1: Spaceship series next, and then yeah, I got to get
- 1:04Speaker 1: on with like the Dragon Knights series, Cards of Power.
- 1:08Speaker 1: We've got some cool quantum ideas, so there are lots
- 1:12Speaker 1: more stories to be told. I don't think I'm ever
- 1:14Speaker 1: going to run out here. If you like the podcast,
- 1:18Speaker 1: don't forget to rate it and review it for whatever reason.
- 1:21Speaker 1: Ratings five star ratings on iTunes or Apple podcasts make
- 1:26Speaker 1: the biggest difference to other people finding the thing. It's
- 1:29Speaker 1: just one of the biggest platforms I guess, so those
- 1:32Speaker 1: are hugely, hugely helpful. Otherwise, just you know, tell friends
- 1:37Speaker 1: about it. I'd love to make this a full time
- 1:39Speaker 1: gig someday, but I probably need quite a few more listeners.
- 1:44Speaker 1: I'm very happy for the listeners I have. It blows
- 1:47Speaker 1: my mind how many there are, but I think we'd
- 1:50Speaker 1: have to go close to five times as many for
- 1:54Speaker 1: this to be my full time kick. So you can
- 1:57Speaker 1: all cross your fingers on that one for me. Maybe
- 1:59Speaker 1: we'll get five times the audience somehow at some point
- 2:03Speaker 1: in the future. Here last, I just want to remind
- 2:06Speaker 1: you that I am looking for your story submissions and
- 2:11Speaker 1: your artwork submissions over the next month, let's say now
- 2:16Speaker 1: until about April thirteenth, We're doing another contest, a writing
- 2:21Speaker 1: contest and an artwork contest. I had my first story
- 2:27Speaker 1: submission from Oliver from Sydney, Australia, not my son Oliver,
- 2:32Speaker 1: and I had my first artwork, which was a really
- 2:36Speaker 1: good reproduction of my Cards of Power novel cover sent
- 2:42Speaker 1: to me from a moon. So in the next few
- 2:45Speaker 1: days i'll get those, I'll get the artwork posted anyways,
- 2:49Speaker 1: and i'll read over the chapter. My favorite story, which
- 2:53Speaker 1: I'm sure it'll be really hard to choose, by the way,
- 2:56Speaker 1: will be turned into an episode of the podcast as
- 2:59Speaker 1: long as the artist wants to work with me on that.
- 3:01Speaker 1: And my favorite artwork submitter, we'll also get a guaranteed
- 3:07Speaker 1: story idea. So that's two guaranteed story ideas. And I
- 3:10Speaker 1: get to see your cool artwork and read your cool stories.
- 3:13Speaker 1: So get drawing, get writing hand to send them to
- 3:17Speaker 1: me if you want to. Now it's that time again.
- 3:23Speaker 1: Time to get as comfy as you can in that bed,
- 3:26Speaker 1: close your eyes and imagine yourself doing what the kid
- 3:31Speaker 1: in the story does. Imagine yourself opening your eyes, only
- 3:40Speaker 1: this time you don't find yourself in your bed, not
- 3:44Speaker 1: exactly anyways. You blink a few times and look up
- 3:48Speaker 1: at the ceiling above you. It's so high that it
- 3:53Speaker 1: almost disappears into the shadows. Then you notice the shelves,
- 3:59Speaker 1: the endless shelves of books, books stacked higher than houses,
- 4:06Speaker 1: The winding staircases, the cozy reading couches, the uh little
- 4:11Speaker 1: magical books flying around the room as if their covers
- 4:15Speaker 1: were wings. Oh right, you mutter to yourself. I'm in
- 4:23Speaker 1: the Magic Library. You must have fallen asleep here after
- 4:27Speaker 1: your last adventure, the one in that wizarding world. A
- 4:33Speaker 1: blanket has tucked itself neatly around you, and a pillow
- 4:37Speaker 1: has somehow positioned itself perfectly under your head, which is well, honestly,
- 4:44Speaker 1: pretty comfortable and much appreciated. Good morning, says a familiar
- 4:51Speaker 1: voice from all around you, the librarian. You sit up
- 4:57Speaker 1: slowly and rub your eyes. Morning. Is it morning? Well
- 5:03Speaker 1: somewhere certainly, says the librarian. That's not as helpful as
- 5:08Speaker 1: you probably think it is. I disagree. It's accurate. This
- 5:14Speaker 1: library is connected to all sorts of different places, both
- 5:20Speaker 1: places in different times, different spaces, different time zones. Eh,
- 5:27Speaker 1: it's sort of timeless if you think about it. Ah, Okay,
- 5:33Speaker 1: you stretch your arms and look down beside you, and
- 5:38Speaker 1: there it is the book world system, the Mage of Emberfall.
- 5:46Speaker 1: The cover still shows the glowing portal, the village, the mountains,
- 5:51Speaker 1: and the small dragonling flying beside the boy from Earth.
- 5:57Speaker 1: You know, says the librarian. You seemed rather interested in
- 6:03Speaker 1: that particular story. I was, you say, I mean, I
- 6:08Speaker 1: got to be a wizard with a dragon, a dragon
- 6:13Speaker 1: lying anyways, the librarian corrects. At least for now, now
- 6:19Speaker 1: it still counts fair enough. Ill, nah, would you like
- 6:25Speaker 1: to continue the story? You look at the book for
- 6:29Speaker 1: a moment. Part of you knows you should probably go
- 6:33Speaker 1: back home and like eat breakfast or do something sensible.
- 6:38Speaker 1: But then again, there is a wizarding world inside that book,
- 6:43Speaker 1: and you left off as a level two mage with
- 6:47Speaker 1: magic robes, a dragonling familiar, and a brand new firebolt spell,
- 6:55Speaker 1: so being sensible didn't really stand much of a chance. Yes,
- 7:02Speaker 1: you say, I definitely would like to go back into
- 7:06Speaker 1: that book. You flip the book open on your lap,
- 7:10Speaker 1: and a portal glows bright blue. You take a breath,
- 7:15Speaker 1: lean forward, and feel the familiar pull as the book
- 7:20Speaker 1: draws you in. Light swirls around you, wind rushes past
- 7:26Speaker 1: your years, and then everything settles. When you open your
- 7:32Speaker 1: eyes again, you're lying in a small but comfortable room
- 7:37Speaker 1: above Marlowe's General Goods. You are JD once again, the
- 7:45Speaker 1: level two mage. Your robes of magica hang perfectly around
- 7:51Speaker 1: your body, deep blue, with silver stitching around the sleeves.
- 7:56Speaker 1: Outside the window, Ember falls start village is just waking up,
- 8:02Speaker 1: smoke curling from chimneys, chickens wandering down the road somewhere
- 8:09Speaker 1: someone hammering metal, probably a blacksmith or something like that. Zeke,
- 8:15Speaker 1: your dragonling familiar, is curled up on the windowsill. The
- 8:20Speaker 1: tiny red dragonling opens a golden eye. Now you're back,
- 8:27Speaker 1: he says, of course, I'm back.
- 8:30Speaker 2: Wow.
- 8:31Speaker 1: Good, You've got a lot to learn. And then the
- 8:35Speaker 1: librarian begins to narrate all around you. J D spent
- 8:41Speaker 1: the next few weeks living above Marlowe's General Goods, and
- 8:47Speaker 1: to put it simply, he became extremely busy. The room
- 8:53Speaker 1: begins to shimmer around you, not in a scary way,
- 8:58Speaker 1: more like the world world, turning pages quickly kind of way.
- 9:04Speaker 1: Morning light flashes through the window, then evening, then morning again.
- 9:09Speaker 1: You see yourself running down the stairs of the general store,
- 9:14Speaker 1: with Zeke flying beside your shoulder. The scene changes. You're
- 9:19Speaker 1: standing in front of the entrance to a dark mine,
- 9:22Speaker 1: holding one hand out in front of you, while glowing
- 9:26Speaker 1: crystals shine along the stone walls. First, says the librarian,
- 9:33Speaker 1: j D cleared out the nearby glow stone mine so
- 9:39Speaker 1: the miners could return to work. The images flash in
- 9:44Speaker 1: front of you, cave. Spiders dropping from the ceiling, you
- 9:49Speaker 1: blasting them back with flames and firebolts. Goblins scattering, a
- 9:55Speaker 1: crystal golum stomping forward. You raise both hands, fire, frost, lightning.
- 10:04Speaker 1: The crystal golum collapses into glowing energy, and miners cheer
- 10:09Speaker 1: as your body pulls the energy in in the form
- 10:14Speaker 1: of crystals. The page turns again. Next says the librarian
- 10:21Speaker 1: j D. Recovered lost books from an ancient dungeon near
- 10:26Speaker 1: the forest for the local librarian, Michelle. Now you see
- 10:33Speaker 1: yourself stepping through dusty stone halls. Skeletons rise from the floor,
- 10:39Speaker 1: swords rattling in their hands, but they're no match for
- 10:44Speaker 1: your magical powers. You blast them with fire. Skeletons shoot arrows,
- 10:50Speaker 1: but your protective aura, the one created by your robes
- 10:54Speaker 1: of magica, cause the arrow to bounce right off armor increased.
- 11:02Speaker 1: You grab a stack of old books from a stone chest,
- 11:06Speaker 1: just as the dungeon begins to rumble. The page turns again.
- 11:12Speaker 1: He E fought elemental rodents of all different kinds for
- 11:17Speaker 1: the local baker. You find yourself in a bakery. Now
- 11:23Speaker 1: fire rodents or everywhere, frost rodents and even lightning rodents
- 11:31Speaker 1: surround you. You stare at the mass, Then frost shoots
- 11:37Speaker 1: from your hand, followed by lightning, followed by careful bursts
- 11:41Speaker 1: of fire that only burn one of the tables a
- 11:44Speaker 1: little bit. The baker didn't seem thrilled about that one,
- 11:48Speaker 1: but he did get over it. The page turns again.
- 11:53Speaker 1: He eve fought wolves. You see yourself beneath moonlight trees,
- 11:59Speaker 1: lightning cloak crackling around your body as a pack of
- 12:04Speaker 1: wolves circle you, growling low, they leap, Lightning flashes from
- 12:10Speaker 1: your fingers and well all around your body, and the
- 12:13Speaker 1: scene changes again. He fought one very large bear. You
- 12:21Speaker 1: find yourself in a forest clearing now standing in front
- 12:25Speaker 1: of a really, really big bear. The bear roars, You
- 12:30Speaker 1: look up at it, and you fire ice spikes a
- 12:35Speaker 1: new spell you recently acquired. The whole scene disappears in
- 12:40Speaker 1: a burst of white frost, and the page turns again,
- 12:45Speaker 1: and of course, the librarian continues. J D also accepted
- 12:52Speaker 1: some of the less exciting missions, because even magical worlds
- 12:58Speaker 1: require basic errns. Now you see yourself collecting berries for
- 13:04Speaker 1: the baker, and then gathering mushrooms, and then hauling or
- 13:10Speaker 1: for the blacksmith. Carrying bundles of firewood, and then standing
- 13:15Speaker 1: beside the blacksmith hammering heated metal again and again while
- 13:20Speaker 1: sparks jump through the air. You help make swords, you
- 13:26Speaker 1: help repair armor, you help shape horseshoes, and you even
- 13:32Speaker 1: help make a frying pan, which is not particularly heroic
- 13:37Speaker 1: but apparently very important for people to be able to
- 13:39Speaker 1: eat and that sort of thing. Not every mission was glamorous,
- 13:45Speaker 1: says the librarian, but every mission taught him something. The
- 13:52Speaker 1: images begin to layer over each other, fire bursting from
- 13:57Speaker 1: your hands, ice spreading across the ground, Lightning flashing through
- 14:02Speaker 1: the air. As enemies dissolve into light and you absorb
- 14:07Speaker 1: their experience in the form of energy crystals. You see
- 14:13Speaker 1: healing light glowing around your fingers, a hammer striking hot metal,
- 14:18Speaker 1: gold coins pouring into your inventory, and energy crystals spinning
- 14:24Speaker 1: in the air before being absorbed by your body. And
- 14:28Speaker 1: again and again. The mysterious voice of the world speaks
- 14:33Speaker 1: inside your mind. Congratulations, your destruction magic has increased. Congratulations,
- 14:43Speaker 1: your healing has increased. Congratulations, your smithing level has increased. Congratulations,
- 14:54Speaker 1: light armor increased. Destruction magic has increased to level twenty. Congratulations,
- 15:04Speaker 1: you are now adept at destruction magic. Healing has increased
- 15:10Speaker 1: to level twenty. Congratulations, you are now adept at healing magic. Congratulations,
- 15:19Speaker 1: your smithing has increased to level twenty. You are now
- 15:24Speaker 1: an adept at smithing. The world pauses. A glowing message
- 15:31Speaker 1: appears in front of you. You have reached level ten mage.
- 15:37Speaker 1: The librarian's voice grows a little quieter, almost proud. J
- 15:44Speaker 1: D did his best to be balanced. He puts some
- 15:48Speaker 1: points into health, psalm into stamina, but most of all,
- 15:53Speaker 1: he increased his magic because nothing felt better to him
- 15:58Speaker 1: than a huge pool of magic waiting inside him, ready
- 16:03Speaker 1: to become frost, lightning, fire, healing, or whatever else he
- 16:09Speaker 1: might learn. Next, you see menus floating in front of you,
- 16:15Speaker 1: the menu trees where you pick various different perks. You
- 16:22Speaker 1: watch as you select different ones. In your destruction magic tree,
- 16:28Speaker 1: you pick the perks that allow spells to cost less
- 16:32Speaker 1: and less. You pick one that allows flames to grow
- 16:37Speaker 1: brighter and hotter, one that makes frost spread quicker, one
- 16:42Speaker 1: that makes lightning strikes harder. Then, in your healing tree,
- 16:48Speaker 1: you select a few that go into better and quicker healing.
- 16:54Speaker 1: You put a few points into light armor, but mostly
- 16:58Speaker 1: you become very, very very good at blasting things with magic.
- 17:04Speaker 1: The pages keep turning. You see yourself buying spell books
- 17:09Speaker 1: for marlow Explosive, fire bolt, lightning, cloak, ice, spike, some
- 17:16Speaker 1: of which you remember using in your other memories. The
- 17:20Speaker 1: spell books open in your hand, pages flipping wildly as
- 17:24Speaker 1: knowledge floods into your mind, and then each book turns
- 17:29Speaker 1: to dust. You practice behind the village until targets are burned, frozen,
- 17:35Speaker 1: or shattered, and at last, the fast moving images begin
- 17:40Speaker 1: to slow. You find yourself standing outside Marlowe's General Goods.
- 17:47Speaker 1: The town feels familiar now, and you feel powerful and safe.
- 17:57Speaker 1: Zeke your dragonling familiars on your shoulder, well jd He says,
- 18:05Speaker 1: I think it's time time for what you ask, still
- 18:11Speaker 1: trying to process the flash of memories that you just
- 18:14Speaker 1: went through, all of that experience, all of that learning,
- 18:19Speaker 1: it's sort of over overwhelming. It's that time to go.
- 18:25Speaker 1: Zeke says, oh, what do you mean? I mean that
- 18:31Speaker 1: this place was meant to get you off to a
- 18:33Speaker 1: good start, and you clearly have. You're a level ten
- 18:39Speaker 1: mage now. Your destruction, magic and healing and smithing are
- 18:44Speaker 1: all at level twenty, and you have more gold than
- 18:48Speaker 1: most beginner adventurers could carry if you had to keep
- 18:52Speaker 1: it in your pockets instead of the whole inventory system thing.
- 18:56Speaker 1: But if you want to grow more, we're going to
- 18:59Speaker 1: need to leave this place in search of new adventures.
- 19:05Speaker 1: You look down the road leading out of town. What
- 19:09Speaker 1: else is there? You ask, Ah, Well, there's all sorts
- 19:14Speaker 1: of things, Zeke says. There's armies to join if you want,
- 19:19Speaker 1: battles and banners and people shouting and that sort of thing. Yeah,
- 19:24Speaker 1: I'm so sure about that one. You respond. There's the
- 19:28Speaker 1: Adventurers Guild in the nearby town of Halliburton. They offer
- 19:32Speaker 1: quests and ranks and you know, monster contracts, treasure hunts,
- 19:38Speaker 1: that sort of nonsense. That does sound pretty cool, you respond,
- 19:44Speaker 1: or Zeke says, knowing that this particular suggestion is probably
- 19:50Speaker 1: the one you're most likely to pick. If you love magic,
- 19:54Speaker 1: we could travel to the north and join the Major's
- 19:58Speaker 1: Guild at the Wizarding Academy. You don't even have to
- 20:02Speaker 1: think about it. Wizarding Academy. That's what I want to do.
- 20:08Speaker 1: You respond. I thought you might say that, Zeke says.
- 20:14Speaker 1: You turn towards the shop. Then I guess it's time
- 20:18Speaker 1: to pack. Ah. Yeah, but before that, I was kind
- 20:24Speaker 1: of thinking you may as well put some of the
- 20:26Speaker 1: stuff you've gained into making better gear and chanting at
- 20:30Speaker 1: or whatever. You pause for a second in chanting it. Yeah,
- 20:39Speaker 1: you do know you can infuse gear with bonuses using
- 20:43Speaker 1: the energy you gathered from defeating creatures. Right, you remembered
- 20:47Speaker 1: learning something like that, and it is something you've seen
- 20:51Speaker 1: happen in video games before. So I can make things
- 20:56Speaker 1: more magical. You respond, exactly, And the better you get
- 21:01Speaker 1: it enchanting, the stronger the effects can become. You can
- 21:06Speaker 1: learn most enchantments by simply studying magical items that well
- 21:12Speaker 1: already have enchantments, like my robes. You say, looking down
- 21:18Speaker 1: at your robes, Exactly, how do I do it? Well,
- 21:25Speaker 1: you look into them. You just do it in a
- 21:29Speaker 1: way that you haven't done it before. You don't only
- 21:33Speaker 1: look into them with your eyes, You look into them
- 21:37Speaker 1: with your mind. You close your eyes and focus. Then
- 21:43Speaker 1: you stare at your clothing. At first you just see cloth,
- 21:48Speaker 1: and well more cloth. Then something deeper opens in your mind,
- 21:56Speaker 1: as if it's seeing a pattern beneath the pattern, threads
- 22:01Speaker 1: of light, threads of crystallized energy woven deep into the
- 22:07Speaker 1: robe itself. A voice rings in your head. Congratulations, enchantment unlocked,
- 22:16Speaker 1: enchantments learned, increase magica and protective aura. You open your eyes.
- 22:25Speaker 1: What cool? Yeah, really cool. But now you're gonna need
- 22:31Speaker 1: something to enchant. Of course, Zeke says, I'd go in
- 22:36Speaker 1: there and buy some gloves, boots, jewelry, eh, whatever else
- 22:41Speaker 1: you think you can throw on your body. You've got
- 22:44Speaker 1: the gold, now spend it. So you head inside Marlowe's
- 22:49Speaker 1: General Goods once more. Marlowe looks up from behind the counter. Oh,
- 22:56Speaker 1: j D need more spell books? Do you actually I
- 23:01Speaker 1: need some more basic things? Gloves, boots, silver ring and necklace,
- 23:08Speaker 1: something like that. Marlow smiles for enchant and all trying
- 23:15Speaker 1: to learn you respond good, better than collecting rat meat forever.
- 23:21Speaker 1: Marlowe shows you a number of different things, and in
- 23:25Speaker 1: the end you buy some basic leather gloves, some sturdy
- 23:29Speaker 1: leather boots, a plain silver ring, and a plain silver necklace.
- 23:35Speaker 1: Then you head back upstairs to the room you're renting.
- 23:39Speaker 1: Zeke sits on the bed while you lay the items
- 23:43Speaker 1: out on the floor. All right, now, a first thing
- 23:47Speaker 1: you need to do is focus on the item then
- 23:51Speaker 1: focus on the energy and then the enchantment. Your goal
- 23:57Speaker 1: is to press them together inside your mind to weave
- 24:01Speaker 1: the energy from as many crystals as you possibly can
- 24:06Speaker 1: into the threads, or well the essence of the item.
- 24:11Speaker 1: You start with the gloves. You hold them in both
- 24:15Speaker 1: hands and focus on the energy crystals stored in your inventory.
- 24:19Speaker 1: Glowing crystals appear on the ground beside the items. You
- 24:24Speaker 1: imagine them floating into the gloves, weaving in the same
- 24:29Speaker 1: pattern you saw inside your robes Increase Magica, Protectivora. The
- 24:36Speaker 1: gloves begin to glow blue as the crystals sort of
- 24:41Speaker 1: merge with them. Then the enchantment locks in. Enchantmen level
- 24:49Speaker 1: one achieved. A voice says inside your head. You grin.
- 24:56Speaker 1: Then you pick up the boots and try the same thing.
- 25:00Speaker 1: It's easier this time. Enchantment increase to level two. Then
- 25:07Speaker 1: you pick up the necklace and the ring. It gets
- 25:11Speaker 1: easier every single time you do it, though it takes
- 25:15Speaker 1: the last two items to reach enchantment level three. You
- 25:20Speaker 1: put on the gloves, the boots, the ring, and the necklace.
- 25:26Speaker 1: Power rushes through your body. You feel your magic pool
- 25:31Speaker 1: growing larger, somehow connecting to the items, and you see
- 25:37Speaker 1: the faint outline of a protective area a grow around
- 25:41Speaker 1: your whole body and thicken, shimmering faintly around your robes.
- 25:48Speaker 1: It suddenly feels like you're standing inside a powerful, magical
- 25:53Speaker 1: bubble made of warm light, one that's even more powerful
- 25:57Speaker 1: than your robes alone could do. Oh, I think I
- 26:02Speaker 1: like enchanting, you say, eh, most mages do. Just wait
- 26:08Speaker 1: until you increase your level even more. You can be
- 26:12Speaker 1: uh well, more powerful than you can probably imagine. You
- 26:18Speaker 1: and Zeke buy some food, water, and a mobile camp
- 26:22Speaker 1: set for Marlow. They all absorb into your inventory. The
- 26:28Speaker 1: camp set absorbs into your inventory as a small folded bundle,
- 26:32Speaker 1: even though Marlowe insists it actually contains a tad ped
- 26:36Speaker 1: fire pit, cooking bench, storage chest, and a few other comforts.
- 26:42Speaker 1: You let Marlow know that you'll no longer need the room,
- 26:46Speaker 1: at least not for a while. He shakes his head. Good,
- 26:50Speaker 1: lookout there, j D. Try not to explode anything to
- 26:55Speaker 1: impose into anything like that. I'll try. No promises, though,
- 27:02Speaker 1: you say, as you step outside and then on to
- 27:06Speaker 1: the road north. The librarian's voice begins again, and the
- 27:12Speaker 1: world starts moving. In that page, Turney sort of way
- 27:16Speaker 1: it did before. J D and Zeke traveled for many days,
- 27:22Speaker 1: leaving the comfort of Ember fall behind. The road wound
- 27:28Speaker 1: through forests, across hills, past rivers, and under skies, filled
- 27:35Speaker 1: with unfamiliar stars. Images flash around you. You walk along
- 27:42Speaker 1: a dusty road with Zeke flying beside. You cross a
- 27:47Speaker 1: wooden bridge above a rushing river. You climb a hill
- 27:51Speaker 1: and see mountains far away. At night, wolves come out
- 27:56Speaker 1: of the trees. You cast lightning cloak, and crackling electricity
- 28:02Speaker 1: surrounds your body. A wolf lunges, hits the lightning and
- 28:06Speaker 1: yelps backward before well falling over and dissolving into energy.
- 28:12Speaker 1: The page turns and another bear appears here. There's so
- 28:17Speaker 1: many bears in this world. You ask, Ah, it's a
- 28:21Speaker 1: healthy ecosystem. Zeke responds. You blast the bear with an
- 28:27Speaker 1: ice spike, absorb the glowing energy, and move on. The
- 28:32Speaker 1: page turns each evening. You summon the camp set. The
- 28:37Speaker 1: first time you activate it, the little bundle pops out
- 28:40Speaker 1: of your inventory, unfolds and instantly builds an entire camp.
- 28:47Speaker 1: A fire appears and a stone ring benches snap into place.
- 28:52Speaker 1: A cooking station unfolds, A tent rises all by itself,
- 28:57Speaker 1: and inside it isn't just a sleeping role. It's a huge,
- 29:02Speaker 1: comfortable room with a king sized bed, soft blankets, warm lanterns,
- 29:08Speaker 1: and even a place for Zeke to curl up beside
- 29:12Speaker 1: the bed, right across from a magical heater of some kind.
- 29:17Speaker 1: Marlow really understold this, You say, yeah, that's the opposite
- 29:23Speaker 1: of what shopkeepers normally do. The librarian continues. Four days,
- 29:30Speaker 1: Jane d and Zeke traveled, fought, camped, rested, and continued
- 29:37Speaker 1: north towards the Wisiting Academy. The pages turned faster, roads, forest,
- 29:45Speaker 1: campfire stars, that sort of thing, more wolves, more bears,
- 29:51Speaker 1: some creepy magical spiders. But none of them are really
- 29:55Speaker 1: a problem for you. That is until one after noon
- 30:01Speaker 1: you come across a village. You see smoke rising from it,
- 30:06Speaker 1: and it's pretty clearly not campfire smoke. It's the kind
- 30:11Speaker 1: of smoke that would be created from a whole building,
- 30:15Speaker 1: or possibly whole village, being on fire. You run up
- 30:19Speaker 1: a hill and stop. You look down below to see
- 30:24Speaker 1: a small village beside a river and circling above it
- 30:30Speaker 1: is a dragon, not a little dragonling like Zeke, a
- 30:35Speaker 1: real full sized dragon, Its scales are dark red, its
- 30:40Speaker 1: wings stretch wider than rooftops. It opens its mouth and
- 30:45Speaker 1: breathes fire across the village square. Villagers scatter. Oh, this
- 30:52Speaker 1: is a problem, you say. The dragon dives and you
- 30:58Speaker 1: sprint down the hill, throwing one hand forward. I spike.
- 31:04Speaker 1: You yell as cold energy passes through your body into
- 31:08Speaker 1: your hand, and a spear of ice shoots from your
- 31:12Speaker 1: palm and slams into the dragon's side. It roars and
- 31:17Speaker 1: turns toward you. Great, you say, it noticed me. The
- 31:23Speaker 1: dragon beats its wings and charges. You cast your lightning cloak,
- 31:29Speaker 1: then raise both hands as fire pours from the dragon's mouth.
- 31:34Speaker 1: The flame slam into your protective aura. A glowing number
- 31:38Speaker 1: appears in front of you shield eighty two percent. That
- 31:44Speaker 1: head took eighteen percent. You say out loud, yeah, Zeke
- 31:49Speaker 1: says quickly, I would avoid getting hit by the dragon
- 31:53Speaker 1: fire entirely. That's probably the best plan here. You roll
- 31:58Speaker 1: sideways as the dragon land, shaking the ground beneath you.
- 32:03Speaker 1: You cast an explosive fire bolt. A ball of fire
- 32:08Speaker 1: blasts from your hand and bursts against the dragon's chest.
- 32:12Speaker 1: The dragon stumbles back, smoke curling up from its scales.
- 32:18Speaker 1: Then you cast lightning. A bolt strikes its neck, then
- 32:23Speaker 1: ice spike again. The spike hits one of its legs,
- 32:27Speaker 1: and ice crawls upward, freezing part of it in place.
- 32:32Speaker 1: The dragon roars, flapping its wings hard enough to knock
- 32:36Speaker 1: over mark its stalls and well do a little damage
- 32:40Speaker 1: to a nearby building. You hit it again with frost,
- 32:44Speaker 1: trying to slow it down, but the dragon shakes the
- 32:48Speaker 1: ice loose and breathes fire again. The shield flashes, shield
- 32:55Speaker 1: fifty four percent. You grit your teeth bolts, A huge
- 33:01Speaker 1: explosion of fire hits the dragon. Lightning, crackling energy strikes
- 33:07Speaker 1: the dragon's wing, ice spike. The spike hits its shoulder,
- 33:12Speaker 1: freezing the scales for just a moment. You continue to
- 33:16Speaker 1: hit the dragon with all of the spells you can
- 33:20Speaker 1: possibly muster. You watch your magic decrease as you hit
- 33:25Speaker 1: it with spikes of ice, bolts of fire, and now,
- 33:31Speaker 1: of course, a little bit of lightning. He hits you back.
- 33:37Speaker 1: Your shield decreases to thirty one percent magic low, Oh no,
- 33:44Speaker 1: you mutter. The dragon lifts its head, fire glowing in
- 33:49Speaker 1: its throat. Zeke leans close to your ear. Ah, you
- 33:54Speaker 1: only have enough magic for one more spell. You better
- 33:57Speaker 1: make it count. You stand and breathing hard, your magic
- 34:02Speaker 1: pool nearly empty, your shield or protective aura flickering around you.
- 34:09Speaker 1: You watch as the dragon's fire builds in its throat.
- 34:14Speaker 1: You gather every bit of cold you can find, and
- 34:19Speaker 1: well you blast one more ice spike straight at the dragon.
- 34:26Speaker 1: The huge spike of ice shoots from both of your hands,
- 34:30Speaker 1: larger than anyone you've made before. It streaks across the
- 34:35Speaker 1: village square and strikes the dragon directly in the chest.
- 34:41Speaker 1: The dragon roars and begins to glow with energy. The
- 34:46Speaker 1: ice spreads, and then, with a heavy crash, the dragon collapses.
- 34:54Speaker 1: For a moment, everything is still. Villagers peek out from
- 34:59Speaker 1: behind barrels, doors, overturned carts, or well wherever else they
- 35:04Speaker 1: could find a hide. You walk toward the dragon slowly, Zeke,
- 35:10Speaker 1: landing on your shoulder. The dragon's body begins to glow,
- 35:15Speaker 1: like defeated creatures often do in this world. It starts
- 35:19Speaker 1: to dissolve into shimmering energy, but this time something different
- 35:25Speaker 1: happens as well. A strange blue light rises from the
- 35:30Speaker 1: dragon's chest. It swirls once in the air and shoots
- 35:36Speaker 1: straight into Zeke Zeke gasps. Zeke, you say, He lifts
- 35:44Speaker 1: off of your shoulder, Glowing brighter and brighter. His little
- 35:49Speaker 1: body begins to stretch, his wings expand, his legs grow stronger,
- 35:56Speaker 1: and his tail lengthens. When the glow fades, Zeke is
- 36:03Speaker 1: no longer the size of a cat. He's no longer
- 36:08Speaker 1: a dragon ling at all. In fact, he stands closer
- 36:12Speaker 1: to the size of a small horse, with powerful red wings,
- 36:17Speaker 1: golden eyes, and smoke curling from his nostrils. You stare
- 36:23Speaker 1: at him. What happened? Zeke looks down at himself, then
- 36:28Speaker 1: spreads his wings proudly. I seem to have absorbed the
- 36:34Speaker 1: dragon's essence and added it to my own. You can
- 36:39Speaker 1: do that, ah, apparently I can. He takes a deep
- 36:44Speaker 1: breath and blasts a powerful plume of fire into the sky.
- 36:50Speaker 1: The villager's cheer. Seemingly knowing that this dragon isn't someone
- 36:55Speaker 1: to worry about. You just grin. This is gonna be
- 37:00Speaker 1: very useful, very useful, Zeke says. That night, you set
- 37:08Speaker 1: up camp one last time on a hill, overlooking the
- 37:12Speaker 1: road to the north. In the distance, you can just
- 37:16Speaker 1: barely see tall towers rising against the stars. The wizarding Academy.
- 37:24Speaker 1: We should be able to reach it by tomorrow, Zeke says,
- 37:28Speaker 1: curling beside the fire. You, on the other hand, are
- 37:32Speaker 1: feeling well exhausted. H librarian, you say, The familiar voice
- 37:41Speaker 1: answers at once. Yes, I think I need a break. Ah.
- 37:48Speaker 1: That is understandable, and this is a perfect chance. Dragon
- 37:54Speaker 1: battles do tend to be quite tiring. A glowing poor
- 38:00Speaker 1: appears beside the camp. You look at Zeke. I'll be
- 38:05Speaker 1: back in a bit I now, he says, And next
- 38:09Speaker 1: time we go to school. You step through the bortle
- 38:14Speaker 1: and tumble gently back onto the couch inside the magic library.
- 38:20Speaker 1: You close the book, just to be safe. It's not
- 38:24Speaker 1: a good idea to leave books open in the magic library,
- 38:27Speaker 1: after all. Then you lay down on the couch once again.
- 38:33Speaker 1: You pull the blanket up to your chin, close your eyes,
- 38:39Speaker 1: and the lights in the entire library dim. With each breath,
- 38:45Speaker 1: you allow your body to sink down into the very
- 38:50Speaker 1: comfortable couch. You let go of the tension in your arms,
- 38:57Speaker 1: your legs, your shoulders, your neck, your head. The more
- 39:05Speaker 1: you breathe, the deeper you sink, and the deeper you sink,
- 39:09Speaker 1: the better you feel, until slowly you begin to drift
- 39:16Speaker 1: off to thoughts of new dreams, new adventures, and new
- 39:23Speaker 1: chapters to come. Good Night, everyone, more.
- 41:48Speaker 2: Union, no no a thing, no more in Nick No Never,
- 55:01Speaker 2: U
