- Lucas: Welcome back to Learn German with Fexingo. I'm Lucas, and as always I'm here with Luna. Luna: Hey everyone! Ready to learn some German? I'm so excited for today's topic. Lucas: Me too. So, Luna, do you have any pets? Luna: I do! I have a cat. Her name is Mimi. Lucas: Aww, that's cute. Today we're learning animal words — specifically pets, or Haustiere in German. Luna: Perfect! I want to be able to talk about Mimi in German. Lucas: Let's start with the most common pet. A dog is der Hund. Luna: Der Hund. Lucas: Good. Der Hund. Notice it's masculine, so the article is der. Luna: Der Hund. Right. So if I say 'the dog', it's der Hund. Lucas: Exactly. Now, what about a cat? That's die Katze. Luna: Die Katze. That's feminine. Like my Mimi. Lucas: Perfect. Die Katze. Next, a bird is der Vogel. Luna: Der Vogel. That's masculine too, right? Lucas: Yes, der Vogel. And a fish is der Fisch. Luna: Der Fisch. Also masculine. So most pets are masculine except cat? Lucas: In German, yes. But there are exceptions. For now, remember: der Hund, die Katze, der Vogel, der Fisch. Luna: Okay, let me repeat: der Hund, die Katze, der Vogel, der Fisch. Lucas: You've got it. Now let's make a sentence. 'I have a dog.' In German: Ich habe einen Hund. Luna: Ich habe einen Hund. Why einen and not ein? Lucas: Great question. Because Hund is masculine, and in the accusative case, 'a' becomes einen. But don't worry too much about that now. Just remember the phrase: Ich habe einen Hund. Luna: Ich habe einen Hund. So if I want to say 'I have a cat', it would be Ich habe eine Katze? Lucas: Exactly! Because Katze is feminine, so it's eine. Ich habe eine Katze. Luna: Ich habe eine Katze. That's perfect for me! Lucas: And if you want to ask someone, 'Do you have a cat?' you say: Hast du eine Katze? Luna: Hast du eine Katze? That's easy. So I can ask about other pets too? Hast du einen Hund? Hast du einen Vogel? Lucas: Yes! For masculine, it's einen. For feminine, eine. So: Hast du einen Hund? Hast du eine Katze? Hast du einen Vogel? Hast du einen Fisch? Luna: Hast du einen Vogel? That sounds funny. But I'll remember. Lucas: Let's practice with a little conversation. I'll ask you: Hast du eine Katze? Luna: Ja, ich habe eine Katze. Und du? Hast du einen Hund? Lucas: Nein, ich habe keinen Hund, aber ich habe einen Fisch. Luna: Oh, you have a fish. Wie heißt dein Fisch? Lucas: Sein Name ist Goldie. But we'll learn names another time. For now, let's review the pet words one more time. Luna: Sure! Der Hund, die Katze, der Vogel, der Fisch. Lucas: And the sentences: Ich habe einen Hund. Ich habe eine Katze. Hast du eine Katze? Luna: Ich habe einen Hund. Ich habe eine Katze. Hast du eine Katze? Got it! Lucas: Great job, Luna. Now you can talk about pets in German. Practice with your own pets or imagine you have one. Luna: I'll definitely practice with Mimi. Thanks, Lucas! And thanks to Fexingo for this episode. Lucas: That's it for today. Keep practicing, and we'll see you next time on Learn German with Fexingo. Luna: Tschüss!
