Latest / Rusty's Garage / Ron Goodman - Part 2
Transcript
- 0:02A listener production.
- 0:19G'day, it's Rusty here, all set for part two of my podcast with Porsche racer, restoration guru and world-class repairer Ron Goodman, who has built something of a cult following for his beautiful work and an incredible personal collection of just about every model of Porsche you can think of.
- 0:39And he has done some cool customisation too.
- 0:41And he's done some cool customisation too.
- 0:43Now, if you've arrived here and missed part one, jump back to the library and learn a bit more about the foundations that led to the creation of exclusive body works.
- 0:53His Speedway and NASCAR racing and a unique sponsorship that he had in those early days too.
- 1:00Plus, going to America and showing some of the best classic builders and racers just what we're capable of down under.
- 1:09Oh, and if our conversation makes you want to check out some of his machines, you can find Ron on socials.
- 1:15He's speed0023 on Instagram, for example.
- 1:19We begin part two with a bruising encounter on the other side of the pond a long way from his panel shop.
- 1:29Tell me a little bit more about that crash in Indianapolis.
- 1:33We were...
- 1:3520-odd seconds a lap faster than the other.
- 1:38This was on the oval track.
- 1:40And an open wheeler coming down the back, he was 27 seconds a lap slower than us.
- 1:48He decided to turn right to turn left on an oval track.
- 1:52So in other words, he moved up the track to try and straighten out the corner, but he was going warm-up speed.
- 1:58He wasn't even going fast enough to do that.
- 2:00And he didn't look in his mirrors, and I was coming up really, really fast.
- 2:03So we hit the back wheel and up and into the wall.
- 2:06It was a decent hit, especially in Indianapolis.
- 2:09The worst part about it was it was right where the cameras were.
- 2:11They'd only just painted the walls from getting it ready for the Indianapolis race, and my tyre marks is down the whole wall.
- 2:19So, yeah, it's pretty bad.
- 2:21I'm sure.
- 2:22Cool places, though.
- 2:23Laguna Seca, Watkins Glen.
- 2:26Yeah, unbelievable.
- 2:26Watkins Glen is really good.
- 2:28We won the enduro there, which was a four-hour enduro, and it had a 15-minute pit window.
- 2:37And there was pure luck.
- 2:39Yeah, we beat a lot of the 911s, the Mustangs, everything else.
- 2:42I come around and Gary put out saying next lap pit because it was a mandatory pit stop, and you'd have to pit whether it were green, yellow, whatever.
- 2:52And just as I was coming around on that last left-hander before you turn onto the pit straight where the pit entrance is at Laguna Saga, a monumental crash.
- 3:03Like there would have been eight cars in front of me crashing.
- 3:06And I just weaved my way through them, got into the pits.
- 3:08The pits got closed.
- 3:10And there I was sitting in the pits for my time while they cleaned up the mess and there during the enduro under yellow.
- 3:17So I picked up about 10 laps.
- 3:20because I was sitting in there, everyone else was going slow around there while they fixed it up and they couldn't get into the pits.
- 3:25I was in there.
- 3:25So anyway, Gary says to me, I think you're going to win this.
- 3:28And I said, bloody hope so.
- 3:29You know, like anyway, we went out and we finished the laps that we had to finish and, yeah, we won it.
- 3:34That was more luck than anything else.
- 3:35Yeah, that's still, I mean, I know, I know a lot of rock solid preparation goes into that.
- 3:42You are hands-on here at the shop.
- 3:45You're hands-on with the car at the racetrack too.
- 3:49Yeah, I've quite often been, people say, what, you've done that?
- 3:52And you're like, yeah, because I own it, I drive it, I build it, I paint it.
- 3:57As I'm getting older now, a few of my guys, Charlie and that, they like to be able to paint the cars.
- 4:02So I let them do it because it's sort of a thrill for them to be able to paint our cars.
- 4:06But I'm still in there, I rub them back.
- 4:07I do whatever has to be done to get the car ready and to get customers ready during the day.
- 4:13I want to talk about a little project car that we have a slight connection on, and that is one that you entered in Hot Wheels Legends very recently.
- 4:23Top three it finished.
- 4:26It has got some seriously cool things in it.
- 4:29So I want you to describe it for our audience.
- 4:31I'll start the process because it has got...
- 4:36an aeroplane engine in it, which I want you to tell us about, but you've also found an altimeter out of an original 1945 Mustang, haven't you?
- 4:45It's got a real aeronautical sort of theme about it or plane theme about it, doesn't it?
- 4:49Yeah, what we'd done with that car, it started out just getting built as a streetcar and then it morphed into what we got.
- 4:57We had an Australian company, Radial Motion, approach us and said, hey, we've got this new three-cylinder aeroplane engine that we want to put into a car.
- 5:06Would you have anything that we could trial it in?
- 5:09You couldn't have called it a better time.
- 5:12I've got a story for you, a deal for you.
- 5:15And so more from there and what they built in the back of this is just unbelievable.
- 5:20It looks great.
- 5:20It sounds fantastic.
- 5:23Everything on this car is Australian except for the petrol tank that was made in the US and the exhaust system that was made in New Zealand.
- 5:31A place in New Zealand, it's printed ink and oil, which is the material that they use on a Formula One exhaust system.
- 5:38The floors are aluminium polished, riveted in.
- 5:41The seats are aluminium.
- 5:42The nitrous is aluminium.
- 5:44Everything that we've made in this car is aluminium.
- 5:46The roll cage is integrated into the car, so we've made it as much as an aeroplane looking as we possibly can.
- 5:54When you lift the front hood up, everything under there is stainless lines polished, and we've followed the theme of an aeroplane, even with the start-up on it, the way that it starts and everything else.
- 6:04So...
- 6:05So we want to – everyone says, oh, it's like an aeroplane, that car.
- 6:09Yeah, it's like an aeroplane because that's what we wanted it to be.
- 6:13But we've also reused a lot of parts off of other cars, like the gear shift.
- 6:19It's carbon fibre curved.
- 6:21It's actually the sway bar off of a Porsche GT2 RS.
- 6:26So I look at a lot of parts and think, yeah, I can use that.
- 6:28The rear vents on the guards are off of a McLaren bonnet, so we made them into it.
- 6:35The wheel's a single spinner, but then we had special brakes made for it.
- 6:38So everything on this car is bespoke, but it still retains the DNA of the Porsche.
- 6:43I want you to keep expanding.
- 6:45That's a beautiful description that you've just given there.
- 6:48But even the shape and the build of the seats, for example, even that's got an almost like World War II aircraft look and style about it.
- 7:00There's leather, I think, in a few little places that makes you – it's a tip of the hat to that sort of stuff too, isn't it?
- 7:05Yeah, I kept looking at the seats and I'm thinking, I don't want to lose those holes in the seat.
- 7:11I don't want to lose the aluminium look.
- 7:13How can we put something on there to cushion the seat in there a little bit?
- 7:17Now, taking into mind, I had the same seats in my 58 race car.
- 7:21And every time you went around the corner, it slide from one side to the other.
- 7:25So I didn't want that to happen.
- 7:27First of all, we made some leather pieces to go in there.
- 7:29We thought, no, that looks horrible.
- 7:31Then I rang up John from ProStitch and I said, mate, is there any way that we can make the leather cross over each other as if it's weaved and then riveted into the seat?
- 7:40He said, yeah, no problems at all.
- 7:41So everything's easy for John, not easy for us.
- 7:44He made up this lattice work that went into it.
- 7:46We riveted it in and it looks spectacular.
- 7:49Stunning, stunning.
- 7:50Can we start that thing?
- 7:51We certainly can, yeah.
- 7:52Let's do that.
- 8:09When Rusty set out to make this podcast series he wanted it to be about writers, drivers, engineers and enthusiasts.
- 8:16There are so many stories out there.
- 8:18If you like the Ron Goodman episode, you will definitely enjoy Rusty's chat with legendary American designer, Chip Foose, who got to work on the animated movie, Cars.
- 8:30In the films, Cheech Marin is the voice of Ramon.
- 8:34He says, but you are Ramon's talent.
- 8:38He says, while we're building this complete town of Radiator Springs, he said, I would like it if you can come in, walk around, look at what you see, and anything that you think Ramon would have had his hand on, custom painting or doing anything with,
- 8:52That's your job.
- 8:53So for two and a half years, I got to go in while they were building it and custom paint whatever I thought that Ramon would have done.
- 9:01And it was a dream job.
- 9:02I had just had a blast.
- 9:05Rusty has the dream job too, although I'm still not sure we can actually call it work.
- 9:10Back to the chat with Ron Goodman now.
- 9:14Let's walk and talk a little bit here.
- 9:16Tell me about, you've got a little Formula Ford.
- 9:19Yeah, it's a 1969 Formula Ford.
- 9:21It was a British Championship winning one.
- 9:24Come up for sale, so we grabbed it.
- 9:25I've had a few drives in it.
- 9:27And, mate, I take my hat off to these guys.
- 9:29Like, you're sitting on the petrol tank, and either side is where the hot water runs.
- 9:35Your arms are actually sitting on there.
- 9:37I don't know how the hell these guys race these things, mate.
- 9:39I take my hat off to them.
- 9:40What was the attraction there for you?
- 9:42It's beautiful.
- 9:43That was the attraction.
- 9:43As soon as I saw it, it reminded me of the early Brabham's and that sort of stuff.
- 9:48This is a Merle and this one.
- 9:50And I just like the shape of it.
- 9:51We've kept the original body.
- 9:53This is another body that we painted in my colour.
- 9:55That way there it looks like one of our cars.
- 9:59The grey has become a trademark, and I'm not going to describe it very well.
- 10:04I want you to tell people a bit about it because it basically is named after you now.
- 10:11Isn't it?
- 10:12Yeah, we were very humbled by that.
- 10:13Glaserit, all my cars are painted in what we call Goodman Grey.
- 10:17It was a nickname that we'd done it when we'd done the original 54.
- 10:21And Glaserit come to us and said, why not put your name to it and put a code to it?
- 10:26And I was really humbled with that.
- 10:27So if you look up 23.356, it comes up as Goodman Grey, and that's my own colour.
- 10:34Tell me about the connection with 23.
- 10:36As I look around here, the race cars all sport 23.
- 10:41How did that come about?
- 10:42What's the love of 23?
- 10:43Well, my NASCAR was 05.
- 10:45All my race cars have been 05.
- 10:47Then with the demise of Peter, unfortunately, you know, like his tragic circumstances, you can't really run around with 05 now.
- 10:55It's a bit disrespectful.
- 10:56So two and three added up to five.
- 10:58So I thought, let's just go with that.
- 11:00But since then, my building is 23, George Street.
- 11:0523 is the first car to win Le Mans for Porsche.
- 11:07So it just sort of was the right number to have.
- 11:09reoccurring theme we are right beside the beautiful looking 906 for people that maybe have even watched miami vice back in the day and there was a an episode there i think with danny sullivan in it for example this is the car that that warren drove recently that you talked about at sydney motorsport park tell me about this beautiful beautiful piece of work
- 11:31It's a car that I've always wanted.
- 11:33And to find one in Australia is very, very hard to start with.
- 11:38So I've been collecting parts to build one for the last probably 15 years.
- 11:44And then the guys in Melbourne said that they could build us a chassis.
- 11:50So they built us a chassis and then they built the body.
- 11:53And then we got Mick from Course Automotive.
- 11:55He'd done a lot of the development on the suspension.
- 11:59So we built our own one with some genuine parts and some remanufactured parts.
- 12:05Give us a sense of engine spec, horsepower, et cetera.
- 12:12Horsepower is only a little bit.
- 12:15You don't have to give exact number, give a round number.
- 12:18It's a two litre and it's probably got a couple hundred horsepower in it.
- 12:23Six speed gearbox, disc brakes all the way around.
- 12:27The wheels that we had for it, the genuine wheels, they're a steel riveted to aluminium outers.
- 12:34And because like a 1966 model car, they're starting to get a bit old.
- 12:38We had the guys out of Boyd Coddington's in America replicate them in full aluminium billet for us.
- 12:44We've got a couple of sets of them which makes it a bit safer and the work that Mick done to it made it a hell of a lot safer because it was very, very, very dangerous to drive when we originally first put it together.
- 12:55It just wanted to keep throwing us into the wall.
- 12:56Okay.
- 12:58And now?
- 12:59Now it's nice to drive, very, very nice to drive.
- 13:02I still can't get my head around how these guys back in Le Mans would drive this thing at 300km an hour down Moulson Strait at midnight.
- 13:12No, thanks, mate.
- 13:13No.
- 13:15There's a little sticker on many of the cars, a boxing kangaroo.
- 13:19It's got red gloves, kind of a bit of an angry look, Behran gritting some teeth.
- 13:24What's that about?
- 13:25What's that about?
- 13:26It was put on the 54 when we first started racing in America and it got so much mileage over there that we just started putting it on on all the cars.
- 13:36And since then we have that sticker made up and all the kids in America have them.
- 13:40We have them on our jackets, on our shirts, everything else.
- 13:43It's just sort of morphed into what it is and hence the project that you just saw us doing.
- 13:49We've gone with that theme.
- 13:51Speed0023 on Instagram is where people can find you.
- 13:55And the merchandise as well, tell us a little bit about that.
- 13:58It's Vintage Racer, isn't it?
- 13:59Yeah, Vintage Racer.
- 14:01We have a fair bit of merchandise for the vintage racing side of it.
- 14:05We also have our own range of polishes, but we don't really market it as much as we should, mainly time constraints more than anything else.
- 14:13I don't want to start marketing something and then people are ringing up for it and we just can't deliver.
- 14:18So that's why we don't market it too much.
- 14:20Let's turn our attention.
- 14:21If we turn to the right here, there are two very beautiful iterations here.
- 14:25I want you to describe them, tell us a bit about them and Outlaw Racing.
- 14:31Really cool.
- 14:32This one in front of us, this is the 54.
- 14:35This is the one I do most of the racing all around the world in.
- 14:39It's sitting here at the moment with a tight engine and a problem with the flywheel from the last time we were out with Warren.
- 14:47This is my little sentimental favourite.
- 14:49It's been through so much with us.
- 14:51This is a really, really good car, this one.
- 14:54Really good car.
- 14:55Why the sentimentality?
- 14:56Probably because this is my first one that I've won so many races in.
- 15:00And it's like the little train that could.
- 15:03You know what I mean?
- 15:04It goes up against some big banger cars, as I said before, the Ferrari, the GTOs and that in America, and we beat them.
- 15:12And it's a good little car, this one.
- 15:14Next door to it, there is one that is open top with a –
- 15:19Bright yellow screen.
- 15:22This is the Roadster.
- 15:24It's a Porsche Roadster.
- 15:25The one that we race at Indianapolis and Watkins Glen and everything else.
- 15:29It's won a lot of races over there.
- 15:31Am I right in saying it hasn't always been grey either?
- 15:33No, it hasn't.
- 15:34It used to be yellow when I raced it over there.
- 15:38Then we brought it back here after that bad crash at Indianapolis and painted it grey.
- 15:42This one here, we've got documentation going right back to 1963, where the owner sent a letter to Porsche asking him to change the tyres, the oil, because he was going out to Salinas Raceway.
- 15:56Amazing.
- 15:57Yeah, it's amazing.
- 15:58All typed like old school carbon letters and things like that, yeah?
- 16:01Yeah, even the paper, like it's different paper to what we have now.
- 16:04It's like tissue paper sort of thing.
- 16:07It's really amazing.
- 16:07What sort of modifications to this and is it an ongoing thing or you have it now to a level of development where you're happy?
- 16:13This car is exactly where we like it to be.
- 16:16We can't race this in a class.
- 16:18We can race in regularity here in Australia.
- 16:22We could probably get a Group T for it because of its history.
- 16:27With the Group S, there's no use taking it to Group T.
- 16:30We've modified the windscreen, we've modified the door apertures.
- 16:33We've done small things for the aerodynamics on the car, like even the rear tournoi cover, we made that out of aluminium, but we made vents to let the air out.
- 16:45Some amazing other machines along the path here.
- 16:49Let's talk, if we can, Carrera Cup over the back here because it's the first generation of the Carrera Cup car.
- 16:57I can fondly remember this coming to Australia.
- 16:59I think Jim Richards won that year the championship.
- 17:01Tell us about that machine and where you acquired it and so on.
- 17:05That's the ex-VIP Petfoots car.
- 17:07Ah, Tony Quinn.
- 17:08Yeah, the logbooks go back through that.
- 17:11It was actually for sale up in Queensland, and I can't remember the team's name that had it.
- 17:16It was after Tony Quinn.
- 17:18We flew up there for it, and I remember sitting there with my missus, and we actually run into Rob Sheeran up there in Melbourne as well, up in Queensland.
- 17:26He was doing another function up there, and I was umming-ah-ing whether I should get it or not, and that was all for $30,000, you know, like...
- 17:34Now, you couldn't get up there quick enough.
- 17:36You just give them a credit card.
- 17:37But, yeah, I'm glad I did that.
- 17:38For bang, for buck, you can't beat that car.
- 17:41And, I mean, a lot has changed in that fabulous series.
- 17:44There's still an amazing car that they just keep finessing with each iteration.
- 17:50But we're talking here front lights that are teardrop style.
- 17:54We're talking H-Pattern gearbox and so on, aren't we?
- 17:57Yeah, real car, mate.
- 17:58You changed gears in this one, yeah.
- 17:59Yeah.
- 18:01But if you really want to go fast, you do need the new PDK if you want to be fast.
- 18:06But this old school, we use this for charity days.
- 18:10I've got one coming up this Friday for the Sydney Children's Hospital where we take people for rides in the cup car and in the 906.
- 18:17And it just goes all day.
- 18:19It literally started up in the morning, throw some new tyres on it during the day and a bit of petrol and it doesn't stop.
- 18:25There are other cars here in the garage.
- 18:26We could talk about all of them.
- 18:28Why don't we talk a few more Porsches if we can.
- 18:30First, I can spot a 944 up the back there.
- 18:32Tell us about that.
- 18:33That's a 944 S2.
- 18:35That was a club racer that I bought off a guy and then we just redone it.
- 18:40The one next to it is a 914.
- 18:42That's turbocharged.
- 18:44And then the one next to that is a 9146.
- 18:46That's my Atlanta, Georgia car where we used to race at Rotoranta.
- 18:50We've bought that one back home as well now.
- 18:52bonnet on it is seriously cool.
- 18:55Tell us the story behind that.
- 18:57It's as though you've taken a range of posters and integrated it into the bonnet or the front design there.
- 19:04That's what we did.
- 19:05We actually got all the relevant Porsche posters from over the years and we snuck two of our posters in there to make it look like we've got proper Porsche posters as well.
- 19:15Bear from Bear Designs, he done that for us.
- 19:17I just give him the brief on it and he does a fantastic job and put it on there.
- 19:22It looks different.
- 19:23Stance is amazing too from the arch work and the way the car sits on the road.
- 19:28That is a beautiful, beautiful piece.
- 19:30And they're beautifully balanced.
- 19:32That one there's got an RSR engine in it.
- 19:35It's a really, really well-balanced car, that one.
- 19:37It's fast.
- 19:38The back?
- 19:40Another iteration of 911.
- 19:42Tell us about that.
- 19:43That's a 912.
- 19:44And a 912 is usually a four-cylinder.
- 19:46But that one we've put into it.
- 19:48We've put a five-speed gearbox in it and a big banger six-cylinder.
- 19:53We had Michael Newton build an engine for that one.
- 19:57That's a pretty good car too.
- 19:59There is lots of cool things people can find online of you from YouTube and more.
- 20:07One yarn we haven't told.
- 20:08You have taken one of these things on the ice, haven't you?
- 20:13I do the ice driving for Porsche each year in Finland.
- 20:16Then we come up with this lame brain idea one day.
- 20:18We got some ice tyres, put them on the 54, and then we went and had a game of hockey against a hockey team.
- 20:24Ice hockey.
- 20:25Yeah, ice hockey.
- 20:26It was fantastic.
- 20:26It was really, really good fun.
- 20:28Really good fun.
- 20:29So sliding, hitting the puck, trying to stay away from goals.
- 20:31What was that like?
- 20:32No, we hit the puck.
- 20:33We scored a couple of goals.
- 20:35We run over a couple of the players.
- 20:37They run into me.
- 20:39And then I'll never forget, the car was sliding towards the goalpost.
- 20:42And I thought, yeah, I'll just tap it and get going.
- 20:44But those goalposts are made out of lead.
- 20:46It just left this big dent in the back of the car, you know.
- 20:50Amazing.
- 20:50You've done some cool things.
- 20:51Is there a bucket list thing that you haven't done that, you know, Ron Goodman would like to do?
- 20:56Well, taking the car to SEMA, which we're doing this year with the aero car, we're going to take that to SEMA.
- 21:03No, without sounding too arrogant, a lot of the things that if it pops into my head, I usually make it happen and it's over and done with.
- 21:11My wife quite often complains that I'm a bit OCD, that once something gets in my mind, it's there till it's done.
- 21:17Yeah.
- 21:19As we talk on that whole notion of project, perfection and so on, and we won't release this until you do, but I've been given a sneak peek today at something very special.
- 21:32As you and I record this, there are some artists that are putting an Indigenous paint scheme on a car in the workshop.
- 21:40What is that project about?
- 21:43We're going to be driving it from here to Uluru through a lot of the Aboriginal communities and raise money for the Children's Hospital.
- 21:53So it should be good.
- 21:54The stuff that you've been giving us a sneak peek of, and as I say, we won't release that until you're on the road and doing that mission, but it looks amazing.
- 22:01Now, I'll time it so it comes out exactly when you want it, mate.
- 22:04That's no problem at all.
- 22:05I would never do that.
- 22:09Where did that idea come from?
- 22:10And you do do a bit of that stuff just to support the Children's Hospital and so on, don't you?
- 22:14Yeah, we do a bit for that and also for the Bury Motor Fair for Lifeline.
- 22:19I have always loved Janice Joplin's car.
- 22:23That's just an iconic car.
- 22:25For her to paint the car up the way she did, it was just amazing.
- 22:29And that 912 there when it was sand beige nearly got the same sort of artwork put around it.
- 22:35And I thought, no, I'll leave it grey.
- 22:37And I just thought one night, let's do it.
- 22:40We purchased a car.
- 22:42And we painted it grey and I was pretty lucky.
- 22:45I got on to Danny, who is the artist doing it.
- 22:49He's an Indigenous artist.
- 22:51I told him the brief of what we wanted to achieve and, mate, he was on board straight away.
- 22:55So we commissioned him to do it and they've done an amazing job and I really think that this is going to blow a lot of people away.
- 23:02Most definitely.
- 23:03I think it will.
- 23:04Clearly, when you're in here at 1am and working away,
- 23:08you come up with some concepts and ideas and things like that, don't you?
- 23:13Mate, if I tried to carry out everything that I've come up with, there just ain't enough days left on the planet for me.
- 23:21I'm quite often morphing into different stuff, and I don't just do it for myself.
- 23:26I do it either for a charity or for my team as a whole to have fun.
- 23:32Life's all about having fun.
- 23:33Yeah.
- 23:34The car, which one?
- 23:36Could you look here?
- 23:37Maybe there's one that's not even in here that you want to get, but is there a Grail car and maybe it already exists with us?
- 23:46No, I've been talking to you about that one.
- 23:48Okay.
- 23:50Unfortunately, COVID's put a hold on that one at the moment, the new GT3 RS.
- 23:55Porsche are doing me a special one, which is very humbling, and I can't wait for that to be done, so...
- 24:02You retain a great connection with them as a company, both here in Australia and abroad, don't you?
- 24:06Yeah, correct.
- 24:07I've got a good affiliation here in Australia with Porsche, a very good affiliation with Porsche in America, very good being with those guys over there for a long time.
- 24:19Awesome memorabilia up on the walls.
- 24:23around here firstly wrensport festival 2013 there are all kinds of signatures on that that various guests that have come to the man cave have uh have put their name to give us a sense of who yeah correct if you look on there there's like rwb japan 9-11 garage poland kate peck friend of yours yeah we've we've had a lot of uh
- 24:44high-end people, and there's a lot of kids too, a hell of a lot of kids.
- 24:48And even just the normal person that comes in to have a look when we ask them to sign the wall, they feel really good.
- 24:54So it's for anybody that wants to sign it can come in here and sign it.
- 24:58You have kept something with a very large hole in it.
- 25:04Talk about that.
- 25:05Does that bring a tear to your eye every time you look at it?
- 25:08No, I said to you, you can look around, there's a lot of those around here.
- 25:11That just shows people what goes wrong.
- 25:14When something lets go inside these engines, that's the mess that it makes.
- 25:18And you can see there, the hole is bigger than your fist inside of the engine.
- 25:23It's hard to look at.
- 25:24The 356, the 58, you have raced it in all kinds of countries, haven't you?
- 25:29Tell us a bit about that.
- 25:30Yeah, the 54.
- 25:31Sorry, 54, sorry.
- 25:32Yeah, that's a bit windscreen, which makes it a bit rarer.
- 25:36See how the windscreen bends from the 58.
- 25:39Racing this car all around the world has been an absolute privilege to do that.
- 25:44Whenever we take it anywhere, everyone knows it.
- 25:46And it's pretty good when you take it somewhere and it's, oh, yeah, yeah, da, da, da.
- 25:51Oh, you're 54.
- 25:52They know the car more than you do.
- 25:53More than they know you, I should say.
- 25:55So that's pretty humbling, you know.
- 25:57There is that kind of...
- 26:01groundswell of love for these cars that people all around the world have gotten behind the story, haven't they?
- 26:09Absolutely.
- 26:10A 356 owner is completely different to your normal Porsche owner.
- 26:14They're more of a purist, they're more of a passionate person, and they know about the cars.
- 26:21And 356 owners are probably some of your better people to meet.
- 26:29What's on for the rest of the year for you?
- 26:30You're off to a very special road trip that you've told us about.
- 26:34What other kind of things?
- 26:35Seema is a great thing as well.
- 26:36Will we see you at some point in the next year, maybe go back to a Monterey?
- 26:39What's the plans there?
- 26:41I don't think we'll get to Monterey this year.
- 26:44We have been asked to compete at Bren Sport in 2023.
- 26:50Whether we take one, two or three cars over for that, we don't know yet.
- 26:54We're just deciding whether we're going to do that event.
- 26:59Because doing SEMA and after SEMA, we're doing the Bonneville Salt Flats.
- 27:04Tell us about that.
- 27:05Yeah, we're taking that car on the Bonneville Soul Flats.
- 27:07With the aeroplane engine.
- 27:08Yes.
- 27:09Yeah, we want to see what we can get to.
- 27:10We're going to change the transmission.
- 27:12That transmission in it there now makes it sound more like a motorbike.
- 27:16You can get it up to 8,000 RPM, but it'll change gears quickly.
- 27:19So we're going to put the same transmission that we run in Bathurst in this car into that car with the gears that Alvin's made us.
- 27:27Same as the 54.
- 27:27Yeah.
- 27:29So it should get to a pretty good speed.
- 27:32That's cool.
- 27:32So will that be a part of Speed Week over there and you're trying to achieve a record or something?
- 27:36No, no.
- 27:38Cole, I can't even think of his surname, who we met through Time Attack, who's got a business just on there, he's organised it for us so that we can go out there on our own.
- 27:47I don't want to be part of an event because I've never done it before, so we'll just go out there and do a run in it.
- 27:52That is another very cool box tick to take something there and run it though, isn't it?
- 27:57Yeah, it's pretty overwhelming, but I think some of the things that I do here in Australia is better than what we do overseas.
- 28:04Wow.
- 28:05Yeah.
- 28:06Overseas is great and everything else, but you can't put the stuff here in Australia.
- 28:10Congratulations.
- 28:11It's a joy to wander around here.
- 28:13We might start a couple of other cars before we leave.
- 28:15You've got some oddball stuff too that you've brought in with a military and there's even a Porsche tractor up the back there, isn't there?
- 28:24Yeah, that's a regional Porsche tractor with bullet holes and all.
- 28:28What from?
- 28:28Yeah, I don't know.
- 28:30We didn't put the bullet holes in it.
- 28:32It just had bullet holes in there.
- 28:33The bike is, that was made for me by a place called Dutchman Motorbikes in America.
- 28:39They gave me that motorbike.
- 28:41Yeah, the Kluberwagon, we decided I always wanted one.
- 28:45So we got it and then we just made it into a military car.
- 28:49It went with the Goodman Grey really well.
- 28:51It certainly does.
- 28:53Congratulations on everything that you've done.
- 28:54It's been great to shoot the bruise with you.
- 28:57Let people know about your travels to Uluru.
- 29:00I think that's going to be a fantastic mission.
- 29:01And that car, when it's completed, they will be blown away by when they see it.
- 29:05Thank you, mate.
- 29:05That's very humbling coming from you, especially the people that you get to talk to, mate.
- 29:09That's really, really humbling.
- 29:10Awesome to have you on the podcast.
- 29:11Thank you.
- 29:12No worries, bud.
