- 0:00Speaker 1: On July 4th, 1953, CBS aired episode 63 of Gunsmoke Dirt.
- 0:07Speaker 1: In Dodge City, a planned marriage brings pressure from Polly's
- 0:11Speaker 1: family and an ominous warning to Marshal Matt Dillon, tied
- 0:15Speaker 1: to the coming ceremony. As Dillon watches the situation with Chester,
- 0:20Speaker 1: Doc Adams, and Kitty Russell close at hand, he must
- 0:23Speaker 1: prevent a volatile personal matter from turning violent. William Conrad
- 0:29Speaker 1: stars as Dylan, with Parley Bear as Chester, Howard McNear
- 0:33Speaker 1: as Doc, and Georgia Ellis as Kitty. John Meston wrote
- 0:38Speaker 1: the script, and Norman MacDonald directed. From the CBS radio
- 0:43Speaker 1: years of Gunsmoke, here is Dirt. And now, our story begins.
- 1:00Speaker 2: Around Dodge City and in the Territory on West, there's
- 1:03Speaker 2: just one way to handle the killers and the spoilers,
- 1:06Speaker 2: and that's with a U.S. Marshal and the smell of
- 1:09Speaker 2: gun smoke. Gun Smoke, starring William Conrad. The story of
- 1:31Speaker 2: the violence that moved west with young America. The story
- 1:34Speaker 2: of a man who moved with it. Matt Dillon, United
- 1:38Speaker 2: States Marshal.
- 1:41Speaker 1: Gun Smoke.
- 2:04Speaker 3: Good evening, Mr.
- 2:06Speaker 4: Seibert.
- 2:07Speaker 1: Oh, hello.
- 2:10Speaker 3: Hello, Henry. Have a drink? No, thank you, sir. Well,
- 2:15Speaker 3: what do you come into a saloon for if you
- 2:17Speaker 3: ain't got a drink?
- 2:18Speaker 5: No offense, Mr.
- 2:19Speaker 3: Seibert. I just don't feel like a drink. Well, a
- 2:23Speaker 3: man's free to do what he feels like, Henry.
- 2:25Speaker 5: Up to a point he is, sir.
- 2:28Speaker 3: You're all alike, you southerners. We keep our word.
- 2:32Speaker 6: To men and to women.
- 2:34Speaker 3: Now, is that what you're here for? To see I
- 2:36Speaker 3: don't run off?
- 2:38Speaker 5: No man's going to shame my sister, sir.
- 2:40Speaker 3: Oh, what are you talking about? I'm going to marry
- 2:41Speaker 3: her in two days. Yes, sir. You are. Now, look, Henry.
- 2:47Speaker 3: We postponed the wedding last month because I had to
- 2:50Speaker 3: go to Abilene on business. I run a big ranch.
- 2:53Speaker 3: It takes a lot of hard work and time. And
- 2:55Speaker 3: the ranch comes first. Can you get that through your head?
- 2:59Speaker 3: I understand. I just hope, for your sake, you don't
- 3:03Speaker 3: have to go anywhere this time.
- 3:05Speaker 2: Polly wasn't proud.
- 3:06Speaker 5: Having to call off the wedding last night.
- 3:08Speaker 1: Well, suppose you leave that to me and Polly and
- 3:10Speaker 1: keep your puppy nose out of this.
- 3:12Speaker 3: I don't care for that remark, Mr.
- 3:13Speaker 4: Sybotts.
- 3:14Speaker 2: Oh, no?
- 3:15Speaker 3: Well, then let's see what a young Confederate gentleman does
- 3:17Speaker 3: about something he don't care for. Go ahead. You're wearing
- 3:21Speaker 3: a gun. You can't bluff me, sir. All right, hold it,
- 3:24Speaker 3: you two. No. With this little whip, I snap off
- 3:28Speaker 3: on my back, Marshal, before I shoot. That's enough, Cybert.
- 3:31Speaker 3: I don't want any fighting here. Especially between prospective brothers-in-law.
- 3:37Speaker 3: You two ought to be ashamed of yourselves. Now, Henry,
- 3:40Speaker 3: you go on. Get out of here, huh? Go drink
- 3:42Speaker 3: someplace else tonight. I'm not drinking, Marshal. You're still ahead.
- 3:47Speaker 3: Get out anyway, huh? All right, sir. But don't you
- 3:52Speaker 3: forget what I said, Mr. Cybert. Oh, those hot-headed Virginians.
- 3:58Speaker 2: I don't know if I ought to marry into a
- 4:01Speaker 2: family like that or not.
- 4:02Speaker 3: Well, marrying's your problem, Cybert. Just don't kill any of them,
- 4:06Speaker 3: that's all. Have a drink, Marshal. I got one at
- 4:09Speaker 3: the table over there, thanks. Well, later, maybe. Maybe. You
- 4:14Speaker 3: sure stopped that just in time, Matt. Yeah. That kid
- 4:26Speaker 3: wouldn't have had a chance against Nat Cybert. No, but
- 4:29Speaker 3: he's a trident anyway. They're going to make a real
- 4:33Speaker 3: happy family. They'll get along. Cybert's in Polly, anyhow.
- 4:38Speaker 6: They will if Henry and his father give him a chance.
- 4:42Speaker 5: It's too bad Mrs.
- 4:43Speaker 3: Troyman isn't still alive. She'd handle it better. They're nervous
- 4:46Speaker 3: about the wedding, that's all, Kitty.
- 4:48Speaker 1: And about Cybert's money.
- 4:51Speaker 3: They need it bad. I used to be rich, Kitty.
- 4:56Speaker 3: Back in Virginia? Sure, before the war. What about now?
- 5:01Speaker 5: Why do you think they're so happy to be able
- 5:02Speaker 5: to marry Polly off to a big rancher like Cybert?
- 5:06Speaker 3: You know it as well as I do, Matt. Yeah,
- 5:08Speaker 3: except for Polly. I think she's real fond of Cybert. Sure,
- 5:13Speaker 3: and he's fond of her, too. After all, she's a woman,
- 5:16Speaker 3: isn't she? Yeah, I know. But maybe you'll settle down
- 5:21Speaker 3: now and quit running around so much. I hope so,
- 5:25Speaker 3: for her sake. When's the wedding, Matt?
- 5:28Speaker 5: Day after tomorrow?
- 5:29Speaker 3: Yeah, that's what they say. You're going, aren't you? Yeah,
- 5:32Speaker 3: I suppose I'll go. I love weddings. Oh, great heavens, Kitty,
- 5:37Speaker 3: I nearly forgot.
- 5:38Speaker 5: What?
- 5:39Speaker 3: I saw Polly on the street the other day, and
- 5:41Speaker 3: she asked me to tell you that you'd be welcome
- 5:43Speaker 3: at the wedding if you want to come. She did?
- 5:47Speaker 3: I've only met her at the store and around. Seems
- 5:50Speaker 3: she likes you. Anyway, that's what she said. Well, gee, Matt...
- 5:55Speaker 3: You think I should? You were invited for the bride.
- 5:58Speaker 3: I don't know. Why not?
- 5:59Speaker 4: Well, maybe I better think it over.
- 6:02Speaker 3: She's got enough trouble as it is. But anyway, I
- 6:06Speaker 3: feel kind of good, her asking me. They're just people, Kitty.
- 6:12Speaker 3: Like anybody else.
- 6:28Speaker 5: Oh, if there's anything I hate, it's.
- 6:32Speaker 3: A liar, Matt. What's the trouble now, Doc?
- 6:36Speaker 6: These eggs.
- 6:38Speaker 5: The cooks swore they were fresh, and I know darn
- 6:40Speaker 5: well they've been put down in water glass.
- 6:44Speaker 3: Why don't you raise some chickens, Doc? I would. But
- 6:47Speaker 3: it'd just create a whole new class of thieves. Chicken thieves.
- 6:52Speaker 3: You're in for a bad day, Doc. You started feeling
- 6:55Speaker 3: this way.
- 6:57Speaker 5: I'd sooner trust Crazy Bule over there than most people
- 7:01Speaker 5: I know around here.
- 7:02Speaker 3: Crazy Bule? Oh, yeah. I haven't seen her in a
- 7:08Speaker 3: long time.
- 7:08Speaker 5: You know what the funny thing about her, Matt?
- 7:12Speaker 3: She's still sort of pretty. The look in her eyes,
- 7:15Speaker 3: she is. You know, Doc, I can't help feeling sorry
- 7:19Speaker 3: for her. Well, I know, but there's nothing anyone can
- 7:22Speaker 3: do to help her. No, I guess not. She came
- 7:25Speaker 3: to see me a couple of weeks ago. Had the egg,
- 7:28Speaker 3: you know. And she paid my fee, too.
- 7:31Speaker 5: And if crazy Bueller can pay up, you'd think the
- 7:34Speaker 5: more prosperous citizens around here could, too. Oh, I sometimes
- 7:39Speaker 5: wonder about.
- 7:39Speaker 3: These people, man. Really, I don't... Maybe you charge too much, Doc.
- 7:44Speaker 5: If I charged nothing, they'd still cheat me somehow.
- 7:48Speaker 3: Good morning, Mr.
- 7:49Speaker 5: Dillon.
- 7:49Speaker 3: Chester.
- 7:50Speaker 1: Hi, Doc.
- 7:50Speaker 3: Chester. Hey, looky here at this. Read it.
- 7:54Speaker 4: No.
- 7:57Speaker 3: If Nat Seibert marries that Troyman girl, there'll be a killing.
- 8:01Speaker 3: I'm warning the law to stop it before it's too late.
- 8:07Speaker 3: There's no signature. Where'd you get this, Chester? It was
- 8:09Speaker 3: under the office door when I opened up this morning.
- 8:12Speaker 3: What do you make of it?
- 8:14Speaker 5: Let me see it, Matt.
- 8:14Speaker 3: Here it is. Oh!
- 8:17Speaker 5: Oh, it's printed.
- 8:19Speaker 3: Thought I might recognize the writing. Well, that's why you
- 8:21Speaker 3: printed it, I guess. Ah. Well, oh, I see. I
- 8:27Speaker 3: wouldn't want to be in that cyborg's boots.
- 8:30Speaker 5: Young Henry is going to shoot him if he doesn't
- 8:32Speaker 5: marry Polly. And here somebody is going to shoot him
- 8:35Speaker 5: if he does. Well, all in all, it'll make for
- 8:39Speaker 5: a lively tomorrow.
- 8:42Speaker 3: Chester, I think we'd better talk to Cybert about this. Yes, sir.
- 8:45Speaker 1: He's staying at the Dodge house till after the wedding.
- 8:47Speaker 3: Yeah, I know. Well, so long, Doc, and be sure
- 8:51Speaker 3: and have a pleasant day. Oh, surely, Matt. So long.
- 8:54Speaker 3: So long. Well, Marshal Chester. Oh, Mr. Sybert. I'd like
- 9:32Speaker 3: to talk to you, Sybert. Why, sure, Marshal. Come in,
- 9:35Speaker 3: come in. Thank you. Chester found this note at the
- 9:42Speaker 3: jail this morning, Sybert. What note? Who wrote this? I
- 9:49Speaker 3: thought maybe you could tell me. No, I've got no idea, Marshal. Oh,
- 9:54Speaker 3: can you think of anybody who doesn't want you to
- 9:56Speaker 3: get married, Sabbath? Who was there last night, Marshal? Sure
- 10:00Speaker 3: don't look like it. I know, but I was thinking
- 10:03Speaker 3: of somebody else, some enemy of yours who maybe wants
- 10:06Speaker 3: to cause trouble. Uh-uh, no. I've got enemies, sure. What
- 10:09Speaker 3: man hasn't? But they don't have nothing to do with
- 10:11Speaker 3: me and Polly. Would they care if I get married? Well, say,
- 10:16Speaker 3: maybe it's just a joke somebody's playing on you. Mighty
- 10:19Speaker 3: poor joke under the circumstances.
- 10:22Speaker 4: Yeah, I suppose it would be.
- 10:24Speaker 3: Old man told me to stay away from women a
- 10:26Speaker 3: long time ago. I should have listened to him. It's
- 10:28Speaker 3: a little late now, isn't it? Habits? Yeah. If you've
- 10:33Speaker 3: got any ideas, let me know, huh? Anyway, we'll be
- 10:35Speaker 3: at the wedding. We'll do what we can. And I'll
- 10:38Speaker 3: be wearing a gun, too, Marshal. You can count on that.
- 10:46Speaker 3: Nat Seibert was a little wild, maybe, and he had
- 10:49Speaker 3: a reputation with the women, but at the same time,
- 10:52Speaker 3: he'd worked hard, and everybody felt that once he settled down,
- 10:55Speaker 3: he'd probably be as steady as the next man. In
- 10:59Speaker 3: any case, I didn't like the idea of a groom
- 11:01Speaker 3: having to wear a six-gun at his wedding, and even
- 11:04Speaker 3: less the fact that a shooting might take place in
- 11:07Speaker 3: the church. So I went out to see the Troymans.
- 11:11Speaker 3: Polly came to the door and ushered me into the
- 11:13Speaker 3: front room where her father and Henry were sitting. Can
- 11:19Speaker 3: we fetch you something, Marshal? A glass of bourbon? No,
- 11:22Speaker 3: thank you, Mr. Troyman. It wouldn't be very good bourbon,
- 11:26Speaker 3: I'm afraid. Prices up, money's down. Things haven't been easy lately.
- 11:32Speaker 3: Not for this family, anyway. Please, Father. Polly, I hate
- 11:37Speaker 3: to bother you this way, but... Well, it's important... Nothing's
- 11:42Speaker 3: happened to Matt. If he's run off, I'll... Quiet, quiet, Henry.
- 11:47Speaker 3: I'll let the Marshal speak. No, he's all right, Polly.
- 11:50Speaker 3: I just want to know if you can think of
- 11:52Speaker 3: anybody who'd try to put a stop to the wedding tomorrow.
- 11:57Speaker 3: Try to stop it? That's right, Henry.
- 11:59Speaker 4: But, Marshal, I don't understand.
- 12:00Speaker 3: Well, somebody's threatened to, Polly. I don't know who it
- 12:03Speaker 3: could be, and neither does Matt Seiberts. I talked to
- 12:06Speaker 3: him about it, too. This is about a stranger. It
- 12:09Speaker 3: sure is. Is this true, Marshal? It looks that way, Polly.
- 12:13Speaker 6: But who'd not want us to get married?
- 12:15Speaker 3: Uh, Polly, when you took up with Nat Cybers, was
- 12:19Speaker 3: there anyone else who might have been jealous about it?
- 12:22Speaker 3: Uncommonly jealous. I mean, enough to start trouble tomorrow? No, Marshal,
- 12:27Speaker 3: there wasn't. Say, what about Red Withers?
- 12:31Speaker 4: Oh, Red Withers and I broke off two months before that, Henry.
- 12:34Speaker 3: Besides, he's gone to Los Animas. And there wasn't anyone else?
- 12:39Speaker 5: No.
- 12:39Speaker 3: No. Not unless you were sneaking out at night, right? Father,
- 12:44Speaker 3: another word like that out of you and I... Leave
- 12:45Speaker 3: a baby to Dad.
- 12:48Speaker 5: Marshal, have you thought that maybe Nat Seibert himself might
- 12:51Speaker 5: have started this?
- 12:52Speaker 3: He didn't.
- 12:53Speaker 6: How do you know he didn't?
- 12:54Speaker 2: He ran out once before.
- 12:55Speaker 5: Henry, we.
- 12:55Speaker 3: He's not that kind of a man, Henry, that's why. Now,
- 12:58Speaker 3: let's not get all upset about this. Polly, I promise
- 13:03Speaker 3: you that Chester and I will be there tomorrow and
- 13:05Speaker 3: we'll see that nothing goes wrong.
- 13:07Speaker 4: Thank you, Marshal.
- 13:09Speaker 3: I'll be there, too. Don't forget that. Sure, Henry. But
- 13:14Speaker 3: don't come wearing a gun. Why not? Because I'll take
- 13:17Speaker 3: it off you if you do. You're too ready to
- 13:20Speaker 3: use it. Is there anything I can do, Marshal? Well,
- 13:25Speaker 3: I'll let you know if there is, Mr. Troyman. I'm
- 13:28Speaker 3: sorry I had to trouble you with this.
- 13:30Speaker 4: I understand, Marshal, and I thank you kindly.
- 13:34Speaker 3: I'll see you to the door. Thanks. The next day
- 13:53Speaker 3: was the wedding day, and Chester and I waited outside
- 13:57Speaker 3: the church till Polly and Nat Seibert had arrived. Then
- 14:01Speaker 3: we went inside and took up our positions on the
- 14:03Speaker 3: far right and the left of the altar, facing the congregation.
- 14:09Speaker 3: We were wearing our guns under our coats, and nobody
- 14:11Speaker 3: seemed to take much notice of us. As soon as
- 14:15Speaker 3: the ceremony began, I had a feeling that nothing would happen.
- 14:20Speaker 3: And as it neared the end, I signaled to Chester,
- 14:22Speaker 3: and we slipped quietly out to the church entrance.
- 14:26Speaker 5: And there, too, had given and pledged their.
- 14:28Speaker 2: Thoughts to his brother, and had declared the same by.
- 14:32Speaker 3: Giving him a few more lessons. All I could see
- 14:40Speaker 3: in there was a lot of real friendly faces, Mr. Dillon. Yeah.
- 14:45Speaker 3: There's nobody outside here. That's Mr. Cybert's buggy right there,
- 14:50Speaker 3: isn't it? Mm-hmm. He's driving Polly out to the ranch
- 14:52Speaker 3: right after the ceremony, Chester. She didn't want a celebration
- 14:55Speaker 3: of any kind. Well, looks like there won't be any
- 14:58Speaker 3: trouble after all. I sure hope not. On their wedding
- 15:02Speaker 3: day and all.
- 15:05Speaker 3: That's over. They'll be coming out now. Yes, sir. We'll
- 15:10Speaker 3: stay close to them till they drive off. It could
- 15:12Speaker 3: happen right out here, you know. Yes, sir. I'll watch
- 15:15Speaker 3: whichever way you're not watching. How will you know which
- 15:20Speaker 3: way I'm watching unless you spend your time watching me, Chester? What? Oh, well, now,
- 15:27Speaker 3: I didn't exactly mean to... Oh, lookie, here they come. Oh, my,
- 15:31Speaker 3: don't they look proud.
- 15:34Speaker 4: Marshal. Congratulations, Saget.
- 15:36Speaker 3: Thank you, Marshal. Get over here for a minute, huh? Sure. Well,
- 15:58Speaker 3: I guess that warning wasn't much to worry about after all.
- 16:00Speaker 3: It looks that way. You got nothing but friends here
- 16:03Speaker 3: as far as I can see. Well, that sure unsettles
- 16:05Speaker 3: a man, though, a note like that. I think you
- 16:07Speaker 3: can forget about it now, Cybert. I'll forget it when
- 16:09Speaker 3: I find out who wrote it, Marshal. Look, that's what
- 16:13Speaker 3: I wanted to ask you. What? If you learn anything
- 16:17Speaker 3: about it, let me know. You promise me that? What
- 16:22Speaker 3: would you do if I did find out? I'd kill him.
- 16:26Speaker 3: That's what I thought. Look, Cybert, you're married now, and
- 16:29Speaker 3: you've got more than yourself to think about. I'm a
- 16:32Speaker 3: peace officer. I'm paid for it. It's my job. And
- 16:35Speaker 3: if I find out who wrote that note, I'll run
- 16:36Speaker 3: him out of the country. And I'll try to keep
- 16:39Speaker 3: you from finding out who it was. I'm not a boy, Marshal.
- 16:42Speaker 3: I'm not sure I appreciate your trying to protect me.
- 16:45Speaker 3: What about Polly? Polly? Yeah. Yeah. I think I see
- 16:53Speaker 3: what you mean, Marshal. Ha, ha, ha. You're just not
- 16:58Speaker 3: used to being married, Cyrus. No. Well, go on. Start
- 17:01Speaker 3: getting used to it. Polly's looking for you over there.
- 17:03Speaker 3: Thank you, Marshal. Sure.
- 17:06Speaker 4: Anything wrong, Mr.
- 17:07Speaker 3: Dillon? Not a thing, Chester. Come on, let's see him off.
- 17:11Speaker 3: All right, Polly. Up you go, honey. Bye, Father.
- 17:28Speaker 4: Bye, everybody.
- 17:33Speaker 3: Bye, everybody. Come see us at the ranch. Goodbye.
- 17:42Speaker 4: Goodbye. Oh, my goodness, Mr.
- 17:45Speaker 3: Dillon. What, Chester? I'm just like an old woman at
- 17:47Speaker 3: a wedding.
- 17:55Speaker 5: You know, they ought to have more weddings here.
- 17:58Speaker 3: Well, if you like them that much, Chester, why don't
- 18:00Speaker 3: you do something about it? Well, what could I do?
- 18:04Speaker 3: Get married. Huh?
- 18:06Speaker 5: Me?
- 18:07Speaker 3: Get married? Well, why not? Oh, now, Mr.
- 18:10Speaker 5: Dillon, you know I can't do that. Why, I don't
- 18:13Speaker 5: make enough money to keep body and soul together just
- 18:15Speaker 5: for me, let alone a wife and a lot of
- 18:16Speaker 5: kids and in-laws and all that.
- 18:18Speaker 2: My goodness.
- 18:19Speaker 3: Well, you could start with just a wife. Did you
- 18:22Speaker 3: hear that? Yeah. It's down the road. Come on, grab
- 18:27Speaker 3: a horse. Anybody's horse. Pardon me. Come on.
- 18:31Speaker 6: Come on.
- 18:47Speaker 3: There's the buggy. Just past the bridge.
- 18:52Speaker 5: I don't see nobody else.
- 18:54Speaker 3: He's up, Chester, so we don't scare the horse.
- 18:56Speaker 6: Yes.
- 19:05Speaker 3: All right, take a look under the bridge, Chester. All right, sir.
- 19:17Speaker 6: Marshall.
- 19:20Speaker 3: Marshall, they shot him. Is he dead, Polly?
- 19:26Speaker 2: He's breathing.
- 19:28Speaker 1: But I couldn't drive the horse back and hold him, too.
- 19:32Speaker 6: Oh, Marshall, why did they do it?
- 19:34Speaker 3: Who did it, Polly? How many were there?
- 19:36Speaker 1: I don't know. I didn't see anybody.
- 19:39Speaker 3: We're just driving across the bridge and they shot him.
- 19:43Speaker 5: There's nobody around, Mrs. Dillon.
- 19:47Speaker 3: How is he?
- 19:48Speaker 4: Oh, please, Michael.
- 19:50Speaker 1: Do something.
- 19:50Speaker 3: He'll die. Chester, get in the buggy and drive back
- 19:53Speaker 3: to Doc's, quick. Yes, sir.
- 19:55Speaker 5: All right, just give me them lines, Polly.
- 19:58Speaker 3: And tell everybody to stay in town. I don't want
- 19:59Speaker 3: them messing up the tracks out here. Now, hurry. We'll
- 20:02Speaker 3: be there before you know it, Polly. Hold him tight now.
- 20:04Speaker 3: All right. As soon as the buggy had gone and
- 20:16Speaker 3: the dust had settled, I looked around. Everywhere, but could
- 20:20Speaker 3: see no one. Then I walked back and followed Chester's
- 20:24Speaker 3: horse track down off the wagon road. His were the
- 20:27Speaker 3: only marks on that side of the bridge, so I
- 20:29Speaker 3: crossed over to the other side. And there I found
- 20:33Speaker 3: the footprints of what must have been either a child
- 20:36Speaker 3: or a woman. They led off in the direction of
- 20:39Speaker 3: a small cabin about 300 yards away. and I followed him,
- 20:43Speaker 3: gun in hand, with a slow trot. When it was
- 20:47Speaker 3: clear that whoever it was had gone straight to the cabin,
- 20:49Speaker 3: I left his trail and approached the door from a
- 20:53Speaker 3: right angle.
- 21:11Speaker 6: Fine. There's nobody here.
- 21:15Speaker 3: Hold it.
- 21:16Speaker 2: Oh, you, Marshal.
- 21:18Speaker 3: Bueller, come on outside, Bueller, quick. Now, who's in there?
- 21:24Speaker 3: Tell me.
- 21:25Speaker 6: Nobody, Marshal. Nobody, now that I'm out here.
- 21:30Speaker 3: You're trapped. Come out with your hands up.
- 21:33Speaker 4: What are you yelling for, Marshal?
- 21:35Speaker 6: There, I got my hands up.
- 21:38Speaker 4: See?
- 21:38Speaker 3: Get out of the way, Bueller.
- 21:40Speaker 6: Get out of the way. Everybody tells Crazy Bueller to
- 21:44Speaker 6: get out of the way. That's what Nat said.
- 21:47Speaker 4: Get out of the way, Crazy Bueller.
- 21:50Speaker 1: Nat?
- 21:51Speaker 6: But he won't say it no more. I fixed him.
- 21:54Speaker 3: Bueller, what are you talking about?
- 21:56Speaker 6: He wouldn't even look at me on the street after.
- 22:00Speaker 6: Then he up and married that Troyman girl.
- 22:03Speaker 3: You mean you, Charlotte?
- 22:05Speaker 6: I warned you, Marshal. I told you to stop it.
- 22:10Speaker 6: I told you what happened.
- 22:12Speaker 3: I told you.
- 22:14Speaker 6: Why didn't you stop it?
- 22:19Speaker 4: Why didn't you stop it?
- 22:22Speaker 3: You'll, uh... I'll take it easy now.
- 22:29Speaker 4: You believe me, Marshall?
- 22:32Speaker 3: What?
- 22:34Speaker 6: Take a look in the cabin.
- 22:36Speaker 3: By heaven, I will. What's this all about, Beulah? There's
- 22:54Speaker 3: nobody in there.
- 22:55Speaker 4: Now my rifle.
- 22:57Speaker 3: Well, where is it?
- 22:58Speaker 4: Right there by the door.
- 23:01Speaker 3: Yeah, it's been fired, all right. Did you really shoot
- 23:12Speaker 3: Matt Cybers, Beulah? I want the truth now.
- 23:16Speaker 6: Said I would, didn't I? I hate him.
- 23:19Speaker 3: But why? Why did you do it? Tell me.
- 23:22Speaker 1: No.
- 23:24Speaker 4: I won't tell you I don't have to.
- 23:27Speaker 3: Well, it's clear enough that you did it. All right, Bueller,
- 23:31Speaker 3: get your things and let's go into town.
- 23:33Speaker 6: I don't need nothing, Marshal. I got all dressed up
- 23:37Speaker 6: and everything. See?
- 23:40Speaker 3: See? Yeah. Yeah, you look fine.
- 23:45Speaker 6: I feel better now, Marshal.
- 23:49Speaker 4: Now that it's all over. He's dead now. I feel
- 23:54Speaker 4: a lot better.
- 24:12Speaker 3: Give her anything she wants, Chester, see that she's comfortable. Yes, sir,
- 24:15Speaker 3: I will. It sure beats all load, don't it?
- 24:19Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 24:19Speaker 3: Yeah. Well, I'm going up to Doc's. Maybe Cybert's can
- 24:23Speaker 3: talk now. Well, you better hurry. Paul, I'll be back
- 24:26Speaker 3: there in a minute.
- 24:27Speaker 6: All right.
- 24:29Speaker 4: Hello, Mac.
- 24:30Speaker 5: How is he, Doc?
- 24:31Speaker 3: I can't tell yet.
- 24:33Speaker 4: But.
- 24:50Speaker 3: Don't wear him out. Hello, Cybert. Marshal. I guess we
- 24:59Speaker 3: should have stayed with you a little longer, huh? I
- 25:02Speaker 3: don't even know where it came from, Marshal. He was
- 25:05Speaker 3: under the bridge there, I guess. Got me right in
- 25:09Speaker 3: the back. It wasn't a he, Cybert. It was a she.
- 25:16Speaker 3: A woman. Crazy Beulah. I just locked her up. How
- 25:23Speaker 3: do you know it was her, Marshal? I trailed her
- 25:26Speaker 3: to her cabin and she admitted it. She say why
- 25:30Speaker 3: she did it? She said you wouldn't look at her
- 25:34Speaker 3: on the street. Told her to get out of the
- 25:36Speaker 3: way or something. Doesn't matter much. Unless you want to
- 25:42Speaker 3: tell me. Well, just a bit... I got drunk one night, Marshal,
- 25:53Speaker 3: and she kind of chased after me ever since. I
- 25:55Speaker 3: tried to keep out of her way. I see. Well,
- 26:02Speaker 3: what are you going to tell Polly? If I live.
- 26:08Speaker 3: If you live. I don't know, Marshal. I might even
- 26:15Speaker 3: tell her the truth. All right, man. Now, that's enough. Yeah, sure, Doc.
- 26:27Speaker 3: So long, Simmons. Bye, Marshal. Two days later, Doc announced
- 26:40Speaker 3: that Nat Cybers would live. And the next day, they
- 26:44Speaker 3: moved him up to the Troyman house where Polly could
- 26:46Speaker 3: nurse him. I never did know if he told Polly
- 26:50Speaker 3: what it was all about. Maybe he didn't have to.
- 26:57Speaker 3: Crazy Bueller never asked about him, never mentioned his name again.
- 27:02Speaker 3: For her, it was all over and done with. And
- 27:07Speaker 3: then finally, somebody remembered that she had people in St. Louis.
- 27:11Speaker 3: And once I located them, I put her on a
- 27:13Speaker 3: train and sent her off. She seemed quite happy about
- 27:17Speaker 3: the trip. and more normal than I'd ever seen her.
