- 2:38m Hey everybody, this is Black Diamond from the Crew Network, episode number
- 3:06one twenty six and you're listening to Basic Black After Dark podcast, the show
- 3:10that meets you where you are and get you what you ask for now.
- 3:14Growing up, I had a problem, a big problem with my wing and
- 3:17I wasn't too comfortable in my skin. Well at least not until I became
- 3:22pregnant with my first child that I noticed. I had a glow on my
- 3:25body and nobody else had that, and it was shining all over on my
- 3:30face, my arms, and my belly. After I delivered my baby,
- 3:35I noticed I still had that glow now, not a pregnancy goal, but
- 3:39a glow of satisfaction. Tonight I was talking about satisfying and normalizing normal bodies
- 3:46in a positive name way with my guests Janet Forbes, welcome, Janee.
- 4:00Hello, Hey, how are you? Can you hear me? Okay,
- 4:05yes we can hear you. I'm doing well. How are you? I'm
- 4:13fine? And thank you for joining us tonight to talk about a topic that
- 4:16many shy away from, and that's normal bodies. Yes, yes, I
- 4:25am so glad that he was able to do this tonight. Let me ask
- 4:28you, what is five you to start a nonprofit or better yet, a
- 4:30modeling organization normalizing bodies. So it was actually during COVID when I was a
- 4:39stay at home mom. I was a new mom trying to learn to love
- 4:42my new body, and one of my followers on TikTok came to me and
- 4:46asked if I could put together a body positivity photoshoot and I was like,
- 4:51yeah, I would love that, And then I said to myself, what
- 4:56the heck am I gonna do with all these photos? You know? So
- 4:59I decided to put on a gallery event that helped raise moneys for whatever charity
- 5:04I choose at that time. And here I am two years later, still
- 5:10doing it. Wows two years Wow? Now models coming all shapes and sizes
- 5:15and a variety of backgrounds. Tell me more about your variety and your intentions
- 5:19with your organization. We got a little bit of stuck, and you said
- 5:30that we have a call coming in. So Jane just seems to be a
- 5:36little stuck. But she's been doing this for two years and she said that
- 5:41she started it during COVID, So you know, when COVID hit, we
- 5:44was doing just about everything right, Okay, now can you hear me now?
- 5:51Yeah, yeah, I can hear you. This is bad. You
- 5:55said that your models coming all shapes and sizes and the variety of backgrounds.
- 6:00More about your variety. So positivity NAY is a huge variety, Like we
- 6:05include pretty much everyone that walks through life. We have people in recovery,
- 6:12disability, people that fight cancer. Some of our bigger categories are trauma,
- 6:18boudoir mombods, and people of color for example, people of color. Is
- 6:26it just embraces all shades of you know, black and brown people because we
- 6:33come in all different shades and with mombods, we are learning to love our
- 6:39new bodies, if they went back to what they look like before, or
- 6:44if they have changed dresses with positivity. Nay, we include. We try
- 6:48to include all walks of life. I wish you had that mombod before I
- 6:54had my kids, because I could definitely use it because I put on a
- 6:59lot of weeds. What are the requirements to participate? Is their height,
- 7:02weight or age? Yes? What's that? What are your requirements? Is
- 7:10their height? Age, a weight? Can they gonna have to be like
- 7:13over eighteen? Under forty? Now? So this year I'm actually including children
- 7:21with my mom boughts category. Last year, I was still new to all
- 7:28this, so I didn't want to want to get kids too involved. But
- 7:31we have all ages. We Last year I had I call the mature ages,
- 7:38which were women that were pretty much fifty five and older, and they
- 7:42killed it. They killed that category. So we do not discriminate on age,
- 7:47sex, religion, orientation, any of that kind of stuff. Oh
- 7:51wow, and I've seen some of your your your stuff, I sort of
- 7:57mature women such as myself. I sat there, they were looking great as
- 8:01what I'm getting a makeup on and imposing and everything. Is there a fee
- 8:05for participating or joining Positive? Nay, So I wouldn't call it a fee.
- 8:13I just asked for a five dollar donation to be a model, because
- 8:18I get so many messages of people wanting to be involved, and you know
- 8:24how it is people say they want to do this, do that, and
- 8:26then they don't show up. So I figured if someone's paying a small little
- 8:30fee or donation, they're more likely to show up, and that donation goes
- 8:35right into the nonprofit to help put on the gallery show or to help do
- 8:39other things in the community. Oh well, that's some great fee. You
- 8:45know, more people should want to participating it. What positive impact has your
- 8:50organization had on the population that you serve? Oh? I think the biggest
- 8:58impact is just helping individuals find comfort within themselves to join me and their own
- 9:07self love journey, my positivity or my nonprofit Preacher's inclusion, which it just
- 9:13means there's a safe space to be who you are. People that get involved
- 9:16with Positivity name they feel wanted safe and include it. As mentioned before,
- 9:22this year, I'm including children because children struggle as much as our elderly population.
- 9:30So we also do things like around Christmas time We help families and need
- 9:35if they need food or if they're struggling to get items for their children to
- 9:39put underneath the Christmas tree. We also helped the homeless neopulation with some food
- 9:46and clothing, especially for the winter months. We collect hand goods and give
- 9:50to different organizations, so we do more than just model. Oh that's great
- 9:56because you when you hear models, you're just thinking, no food is involved.
- 10:00They starving themselves, so they are some challenging And I saw you did
- 10:03something recently with some hogies right myself, which I was closer to be able
- 10:09to do that. But I definitely want to get involved because it sounds the
- 10:15great program and I'm just loving every bit of it. Now you're not only
- 10:20the founding creator but one of the models as well. How do you stay
- 10:24focused? So honestly, I don't really consider myself one of the models.
- 10:31The models always yell at me, come on, Janet, come model with
- 10:35us, come on, you're you know you did this, you put this
- 10:37together. But with my following, they see my body all the time.
- 10:41I embraced my body all the time. So for me, I'm I'm more
- 10:46behind the scenes with my big mouth, you know, directing and trying to
- 10:50stay calm and organized. But I do pop in a category or two,
- 10:56especially if we need like the extra bodies and whatnot. Now I don't I
- 11:00don't know what you're talking about. You saying that you don't model. Have
- 11:03you seen your pictures? Have you seen? Yeah, anybody's go on Facebook,
- 11:07go to her page, go to my page. It's plastered and I'm
- 11:11loving it, so you know I'm coming for it. I love I love
- 11:16the background. I just love so much of it. It's just it's just
- 11:20unbelievable. Do you help place your models in other markets or are you local?
- 11:26I'm pretty much just local. Like I said, I don't consider myself
- 11:30like a modeling agency. I don't have connections to that that world yet,
- 11:35but I will do my best to find like I do research. I'll try
- 11:41to use my following to help other people if they do want to pursue this
- 11:46line of work. But mine is just pretty much for charity right now.
- 11:52Now, I've seen New York Fashion Week and I've seen some of your models.
- 11:56Well, i've seen most of your models, and they look like they're
- 11:58headed that way. Yeah, yeah, I'm just you know, I don't
- 12:03know whether they know it or not. You know, I understand that this
- 12:05is all about positivity and the organization, but at the same time, you
- 12:11have some awesome models there. Yes, especially it's just ready to take off,
- 12:16Yes, especially with the fashion world being more accepting of different bodies,
- 12:20not just tall and thin. So yeah, do your models do they have
- 12:26to sign a contract with you when they when they join, when they add
- 12:30the five dollar fees day a contract with that. Yes, I have them
- 12:33sign a contract the day of the photo shoot. And the contract just states
- 12:37that it's not a paid job, it's for a nonprofit. You're giving me
- 12:41permission to use the photos, and my giving my photographers permission to take the
- 12:48photos. I plan on having billboards this year, So the contract just states
- 12:54that that they might be you know, used for billboards or advertisement, and
- 13:00that I used them on the social media. So wow, So this thing
- 13:05is just gone. We are you located? I'm in central Pennsylvania out too,
- 13:09now, Okay, all right, so he's on the map now they
- 13:15weren't before. They're definitely on the map with this. We're gonna take a
- 13:18small break if there's anybody that wants to go in to speak with miss Genee
- 13:24about positive positivity. How do I pronounce it positive? Nay? Am I
- 13:30saying it wrong? Okay, because anybody, anybody want to call in,
- 13:35they could put some comments in. She's here, she can answer all your
- 13:39questions. I'm just here smiling and trying to look good at the same time.
- 13:45So you know I can't come in here look at all busted. Well,
- 13:48I was like, I can't on today. But I'm you know what,
- 13:52I'm embracing my natural luck, right, and there's nothing wrong with that.
- 13:56That's something else I wanted to find out with the natural look. So
- 14:00when we come back after the break, I'm gonna talk to you about the
- 14:01natural look as far as you're normalizing bodies as well. We're gonna go on
- 14:05a break for now. Okay, okay, turn off the lights, then
- 14:30a can tonight. I'm nothing. I'm imagine let's take a shower shower together.
- 14:52I don't watch your bud you watch d so oil day saying, turn
- 15:13on that girl, I wanna give you with special treat. You're so sweet,
- 15:30turn on it. Hey, we are back. We are back.
- 15:37We are back. Welcome back to our episode on normalizing bodies with Fountain Creative
- 15:43Janny Wards. We had a call during our little break and we had somebody
- 15:48that was special on this call. That was your mom. She says that
- 15:52she is so proud of you, and yes she is. I think you
- 15:56may be able to hear if you want to say something, mom, Yes,
- 16:02you you you can hear you. You're live, Hi, mommy,
- 16:11And I'm so proud of you. And just keep doing what you gotta make
- 16:14me cry on live Huh, she said, you're gonna make a cry.
- 16:22No, I'm not gonna make you cry. You're gonna make me cry.
- 16:26So many people who think thank wasn't normal, And I just want you to
- 16:33know I love you and I love everything that you're doing because you touched my
- 16:38life too. She almost intense. All Right, thank you so much for
- 16:45calling in. Thank you, thank you, thank you. Have someone here
- 16:48saying I'm talking about natural bodies. What do you say to those who have
- 16:51had surgery that has changed them? Oh, that's a good one, because
- 16:57I'm one of those people. So my surgery was gosh bypassed. And people
- 17:07always think that is like the easy way out to lose weight, and it's
- 17:11not. I struggle. I'm six years out and I have struggled every day
- 17:15since those six years. And then the other end of the end of the
- 17:21line, I worked in plastic surgery. Yes, I embrace normal bodies,
- 17:29but how do you define what's normal? I also embrace you want to do
- 17:34to your body, then so be it. You know, there's nothing wrong
- 17:37with alternating your body if that makes makes you happy. Yeah, it's also
- 17:45for health reasons for some when they want to do the surgery. And I'm
- 17:48I'm gonna tell you too, I'm honestly I'm gonna survival of that surgery,
- 17:52the same exact surgery seven years out now. And yeah, it was.
- 17:56It was hard, you know, walking up a hill and I'm not I'm
- 18:00gonna sit there and say it. Over three hundred pounds couldn't even make it
- 18:03to the top of that's it. That's it. I went for the surgery
- 18:07and I haven't looked back since. And it is a struggle every day to
- 18:11try to keep it off. And people think, oh, you cheating,
- 18:15you you know you did this for you know, because you want to look
- 18:17a certain way. No, I want to be healthy, so I do
- 18:19get it. And and the person who had just wrote in you know,
- 18:25yeah, it is a struggle and in every way. But I'm thinking that
- 18:27she's talking about something a little bit more than just the surgery. She's talking
- 18:32about maybe something that she had been through. We have somebody to say,
- 18:34Oh, that's so sweet. I miss my mom and I'm so sorry that
- 18:38you know your mom is no longer with you. But I'm hoping that we
- 18:41I could share my mom with you and then we're here to just continue to
- 18:45talk and just to get everybody into a positive way with positivity name. Okay,
- 18:52so how do you identify and target new models? And I heard you
- 18:56said that he was bringing kids? What about new model? New models?
- 19:03So I have a lot of new faces this year. And what I do
- 19:07I honestly, I just posted social media, you know. And then my
- 19:11I call them my veterans. So my veteran models they helped me recruit too.
- 19:17I have a great support team. I have a great following. I
- 19:21try to use my TikTok. I have over ninety thousand followers on TikTok.
- 19:25I have people that fly in and drive in to do participate in this.
- 19:30So social media is definitely the key to recruitment. We have somebody says the
- 19:37takeovers right, and then and she says specifically for cancer patient to lost the
- 19:41abreast. You know, how do you embrace them and how do you incorporate
- 19:45them into your organization? So this would be a breast cancer survival I actually
- 19:52yes, I have a couple breast cancer survivors in every category. I try
- 20:00to push people within their comfort. So, for example, my breast cancer
- 20:04survivors, if they have if they lost one breast or if they lost both
- 20:11breasts, we embrace it. We embrace it by them holding where their breast
- 20:17used to be. We embraced taking pictures of their stars, and we let
- 20:22them know they're not alone. You know, there's other people fighting the same
- 20:26battles. I've seen some of your models even showing their stretch monks after having
- 20:32babies, and you know, that's that's a beautiful thing. Some people may
- 20:34say to this, but this person just went and brought life into this world
- 20:40and they have the blueprint on this right to show it. And that that's
- 20:45what I consider it a blueprint and it's a wonderful thing. So if you
- 20:49are a breast cancer survivor, get in touch with this gene here, you
- 20:53know, and see what can what you can do to make yourself feel better.
- 20:57About your body because you should be shamed it. Oh, you shouldn't
- 21:00feel any negativity towards it, towards you know, not having your breast.
- 21:07I know that's the epitome of some women, where you know, my breast
- 21:10is everything, but life is ever, you know. So that right?
- 21:15And I know I have a couple of different resources that and connections that I
- 21:21can help with U if you're struggling with body image because of losing breast.
- 21:27Okay, so she's doing more than just giving you information as far as for
- 21:32her organizations, she's resources too. I see your organization is doing some wonderful
- 21:36things for women and men. What is it like working with the men?
- 21:42Men are the hardest. I tell yeah, you were thinking out women,
- 21:48like obviously most women struggle, but men struggle with body image too. That
- 21:55is the hardest category out of all fifteen of mine. I I just have
- 22:00a hard time recruiting men. They don't want to show off their dad bods
- 22:03or their six packs or whatnot. And I'm just like women are out here
- 22:08showing off. You know, they're keeni bodies, they're mom bods, they're
- 22:14and their brow and underware. You can get down to your boxers. And
- 22:18my boyfriend, he's my biggest supporter and he he hates it, but he'll
- 22:22do it for me. Well, the man, you shouldn't be embarrassed.
- 22:27You know, women got those, We got handles. You may have the
- 22:33big bellies, but we got handles, and we're just letting it all out
- 22:37and you'll be surprised. You know. Some women love that. Some women
- 22:40love the big belly. And you're just being a natural man. So come
- 22:44on out and just going in and just do what you have to do.
- 22:47Was there ever a time that you thought that you weren't going to pull this
- 22:51off? Oh? Yeah, tell me about that. So it comes down
- 22:57to finances, especially being a new nonprofit, a minority, a woman living
- 23:06in a small city. No one knows who I am. So are like,
- 23:10why am I donating to this cause? Why am I? You know,
- 23:14I don't know who you are. I don't want to donate. So
- 23:17last year putting this event, people don't know that I put X amount of
- 23:22money of my own into it just to pull it off. And I'm so
- 23:25very thankful for the sponsors that I did have last year. But putting together
- 23:30a gallery event, it's expensive and very time consuming. But I have a
- 23:37strong mother and she always taught me when you want something to go for it
- 23:41and put your mind to it, you can accomplish it. Wow, it
- 23:45sounds like a wise woman. How do you stay creative throughout the whole?
- 23:51It is and innovative. My mind does not shut off. I I don't
- 24:00even know if it shuts off when I'm sleeping, but I just I come
- 24:06up with ideas and my photographers probably get sick of me. It's like two
- 24:08am. I know they're sleeping, or it's four am. I'm getting ready
- 24:11for nursing school and everybody else is sleeping. But I have to text them
- 24:15right away and let them know what I came up with. But again,
- 24:21it's not all about me. This is a team. I consider my nonprofit
- 24:23as a team. People give me ideas and I just try my best to
- 24:27execute them. So yeah, the time, he says that she has handles
- 24:34and stretch marks as well, so she's embracing hers as well. So that's
- 24:40a great thing. You have this event coming out charity, tell us about
- 24:44it. So this year, I don't want to give away a lot of
- 24:51details, but it's three days instead of one day. Friday, November seventeenth
- 24:56is a vendor event where I'm hoping to have different businesses in the fashion and
- 25:03beauty industry come together and just show the community what they're what type of business
- 25:07they are, because we have so many small businesses that people don't know that
- 25:12we have or what they do, what they specialize in. So that's a
- 25:15free event. Saturday the eighteenth is the main gallery event where the photos will
- 25:22be on display. There will be a buffet style catering and music, auctions
- 25:30for different items and the goal is to raise money and donate to a charity
- 25:36in our area. And then Sunday is a Brunch of Memosa Day that you'll
- 25:41be able to view the gallery and you will also be able to meet and
- 25:47greet me and some other the other models. So it's a it's a really
- 25:52nice time. Last year we had probably two hundred and fifty people. Oh
- 25:56wow, that's a great turn out. So is it every year you do
- 26:03a different charity or is there one specific charity that you focus on. This
- 26:10is only year two, so I am going to try to choose a different
- 26:14charity because I just there's too many people out there to help, so I
- 26:17don't want to just focus on one charity. Even though I consider myself a
- 26:19charity because I'm a nonprofit, I figured I can use my platform to help
- 26:25others. Now I hear that you're a nursing student, a mother of five
- 26:30with four bonus children. Tell me about Janet. You told me about your
- 26:37charity, how you're helping other people. Tell me about you. Oh gosh,
- 26:45So I actually have six kids and five bonus kids. But yes,
- 26:52I'm a nursing student and I hope to graduate in December with my r end.
- 27:00I just I just love I love life. I love helping people,
- 27:06and again that comes down to my mother always helping people and being an awesome
- 27:11role model. But I'm thirty two years old. Like I said, I
- 27:17have six kids and a nursing student. I hope to continue with positivity.
- 27:22Nay. I have a loving boyfriend that's super supportive of everything I do.
- 27:27I hate talking about myself. I get used to it because I see a
- 27:33lot coming your way. Definitely get used to it. Where can people send
- 27:41donations to your your nonprofit? So there is a website. It's called Central
- 27:49Pennsylvania Gives, Central pa gives dot com. If you have PayPal, you
- 27:56can make donations on the website, or you can mail a check to the
- 27:59address that they provide. If you have Venmo cash app any of those type
- 28:04of money exchange services. You can always Facebook me on positive Nay or just
- 28:11reach out to me on Facebook. But most people they email a check to
- 28:15the YEP P O S I T I V I n A Y positive v
- 28:25NAY and the first place you had mentioned for them to send it off to
- 28:29that they choose to send it. Say that one again, Central Pa.
- 28:33YEP Central Pa gives dot com how I'm funded through the I'm sorry, go
- 28:45ahead. I was gonna say I'm funded through the Central Pennsylvania Community Foundation,
- 28:52so they kind of oversee, you know, the finances and whatnot. But
- 28:56if you want to get in touch with me, my name's Jane Forbes on
- 28:59Facebook. My nonprofit page is Positivity name that I spelled a couple of seconds
- 29:03ago. Can you put them on chat? Oh? Yeah, I can
- 29:07put it. You can put it in the chat so they can put it
- 29:10on the screen so all of viewers can see where where it's going, and
- 29:14then also bring in how they can contact you if they want to participate.
- 29:19Okay, so this sounds like a great charity people get involved in. It
- 29:26doesn't matter where you're at. You can send in pictures, you could get
- 29:30in contact with Janet and she'll give you further information as far as how you
- 29:34can participate, how you can join, how you can donate, you can
- 29:40come out. I'm gonna get the information as far as tickets to be able
- 29:42to come to the gala. And it's going to be a heck of a
- 29:47weekend. So this I believe, she says, say to date again November
- 29:52seventeenth through the nineteenth. Okay, there you go, November the seventeenth through
- 29:56the nineteenth. And how to the ticket? You said it was free or
- 30:00is there a price for the tickets? Friday is free? Saturday. I'm
- 30:06still working out the prices, but it's probably between forty to sixty dollars,
- 30:11and like I said it, that includes the food, the tickets to the
- 30:15gallery viewing, drinks and music and whatnot. And then Sunday, I'm still
- 30:22working out the prices for that, probably between twenty and thirty dollars. I
- 30:27try to make it budget friendly for people. You know you do you have
- 30:33a location already as far as we will be in Pennsylvania, yep, it's
- 30:37here and out Tuna Well, Holidaysburg, Pennsylvania at the US Hotel. Can
- 30:42you put that information in there as well? So this is way people can
- 30:45actually see all of this information. Yea. And there is an event page
- 30:52on Facebook two with all the information. Oh wow wow. So what is
- 30:57the future for a positive Day? What is the future? What is the
- 31:03whole for you? To continue to grow, continue to grow and help people.
- 31:08I do have a five year plan. Hopefully I have a location.
- 31:14I don't want to give out too many details about that, but hopefully I
- 31:17have a location that will continue to help people in the community. My overall
- 31:23goal is to kind of have like a retail spot, but not be so
- 31:30retail where I'm making money off of it, but retail where people in need
- 31:34need to come gather supplies. Like I said, I don't want I don't
- 31:38want to give out too much details on that. Okay, well, we're
- 31:41definitely gonna be looking forward to that. So what's next for you? Not
- 31:45just with positive to name? What's next for you? I know you said
- 31:49you're graduating, You're graduating in decent I'm sorry to say it again. Yes,
- 32:00can you repeat that? I said? Yes, graduating nursing school.
- 32:02Yeah, and then what do you want to graduating nursing school? You're gonna
- 32:07just work or take a break or I'm probably just gonna work. Yeah,
- 32:15I'll continue to go back. Maybe the goal is to possibly become a nurse
- 32:19practitioner. Okay, so look this, this young lady is doing things.
- 32:24She's doing some positive things there in Pennsylvania. Are you considering going to different
- 32:30states to bring positive NAVYA would you just say local? We would actually reached
- 32:37out to me, Oh, I would the only thing. Yes, someone
- 32:43reached out to me in California wanting me to put on an event like this
- 32:47for them. That was a couple of months ago. We really haven't followed
- 32:51up on it, but yeah, I would definitely be more than willing to
- 32:55go to other places. This. Wow, So you gotta do some asking
- 33:00calls in every place. Just keep posting it, buying the locations you had.
- 33:05You hear Rady on Basic Black after dark. She's willing to go to
- 33:07other locations. So you big cities look out, because here she comes,
- 33:12here she comes, and I see that I see nothing but greatness for you.
