- 0:46SPEAKER_00: Welcome, sisters and brothers and peace be with you.
- 0:52SPEAKER_00: May the words on my lips and the meditations in our hearts be acceptable in your sight, O Lord, our strength and our Redeemer.
- 1:03SPEAKER_00: Amen.
- 1:09SPEAKER_00: If what we hear in today's gospel, Matthew chapter twenty two verses one to fourteen is really what the kingdom of heaven is like, then I'm not interested.
- 1:30SPEAKER_00: Who needs God's kingdom?
- 1:33SPEAKER_00: At least as Jesus describes it today, when we already have more than enough leaders throughout the world who are abusing their power, when violence is perpetrated on a daily basis, when people's lives are being destroyed, when cities are burning, when some are excluded and told they don't belong.
- 2:04SPEAKER_00: We don't need God's help to bring that about.
- 2:09SPEAKER_00: We're pretty good at doing that all by ourselves.
- 2:18SPEAKER_00: People making light of the invitation, finding other things to do, people seized, mistreated, and killed.
- 2:29SPEAKER_00: An enraged leader who sends out his forces to destroy cities, kill people, and annihilate kingdoms.
- 2:44SPEAKER_00: People thrown into the outer darkness.
- 2:50SPEAKER_00: Does this fit your image of the kingdom of heaven?
- 2:58SPEAKER_00: Is that what you are seeking every time you join together with your faith community in worship?
- 3:08SPEAKER_00: Is the way Jesus describes the kingdom what you have in mind when you pray Thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven?
- 3:26SPEAKER_00: This is a difficult and painful text.
- 3:30SPEAKER_00: It feels like there's something left unwritten that we aren't reading, like there's something left unspoken that we aren't hearing.
- 3:41SPEAKER_00: There are just too many contradictions and inconsistencies to take it at face value.
- 3:51SPEAKER_00: If today's gospel teaches us anything, it's that we can't simply hear or read our sacred texts and glibly respond, Thanks be to God, or praise to you, Lord Christ.
- 4:10SPEAKER_00: Every text invites us to struggle not just with the text itself, but with what that text means in our life and to work out our faith in the light of that struggle.
- 4:29SPEAKER_00: Yes, and that's what I want us to do with today's gospel.
- 4:34SPEAKER_00: I want us to wrestle and argue with this text until it begins to take shape in a way that reshapes us.
- 4:51SPEAKER_00: So how do you like the image of a wedding banquet as the kingdom?
- 4:57SPEAKER_00: Joy, love, feasting, family, the unity of two becoming one.
- 5:04SPEAKER_00: Does that work for you?
- 5:07SPEAKER_00: I'm good with it.
- 5:08SPEAKER_00: It's the kind of thing I want for you and for me.
- 5:12SPEAKER_00: It fits nicely with Jesus performing his first miracle at that wedding in Cana.
- 5:20SPEAKER_00: It's consistent with the words from Isaiah that the Lord will make for all peoples a feast of rich food, a feast of well-aged wines.
- 5:33SPEAKER_00: And it echoes the psalmist saying that the Lord spreads a table before him and fill his cup to overflowing.
- 5:44SPEAKER_00: But look what happens next.
- 5:47SPEAKER_00: The king sends messengers to tell all of those who have been invited Dinner is ready.
- 5:55SPEAKER_00: Come on, let's get the party started.
- 6:01SPEAKER_00: But those who had been invited refused to come.
- 6:05SPEAKER_00: They mistreated and killed the messengers.
- 6:10SPEAKER_00: And then the king sent his army to destroy those who had been invited and burn their city to the ground.
- 6:19SPEAKER_00: How about that for an image of the kingdom?
- 6:24SPEAKER_00: Is that your experience of God?
- 6:27SPEAKER_00: Are we going back to an eye for an eye?
- 6:33SPEAKER_00: Is that what you want to teach your children and grandchildren about God?
- 6:42SPEAKER_00: There has got to be more to this story than what it says.
- 6:50SPEAKER_00: Next, the king sends messengers to invite anyone, everyone, good and bad.
- 6:57SPEAKER_00: It's as if they are saying, Doesn't matter who you are, doesn't matter what you've done, the feast is for you.
- 7:06SPEAKER_00: That matches all the stories about Jesus eating and spending time with tax collectors and sinners, healing lepers, forgiven the woman caught in adultery, giving sight to the blind and life to those in the tombs.
- 7:24SPEAKER_00: That sounds more like the kingdom to me.
- 7:27SPEAKER_00: What do you think?
- 7:31SPEAKER_00: The kingdom is for everyone, no one gets left out.
- 7:35SPEAKER_00: That sounds good.
- 7:37SPEAKER_00: But then a man shows up without a wedding robe.
- 7:43SPEAKER_00: He survived the king's army, escaped the burning of the city, accepted the invitation only to be thrown into the outer darkness.
- 7:54SPEAKER_00: Because he wasn't properly dressed?
- 7:57SPEAKER_00: Oh come on.
- 8:01SPEAKER_00: Is there really a dress code for the kingdom?
- 8:05SPEAKER_00: Is that what you believe the kingdom is like?
- 8:09SPEAKER_00: And why didn't the king give the poor guy a wedding robe?
- 8:14SPEAKER_00: After all, didn't Jesus say something about welcoming the stranger and clothing the naked?
- 8:21SPEAKER_00: So which is it?
- 8:23SPEAKER_00: Welcome and clothe the stranger or kick him or her out because they're not properly dressed.
- 8:34SPEAKER_00: Today's gospel is a collage of contradictions and insistencies, a wedding blanket, a wedding banquet and a bloodbath, messengers of good news and truth and killers of those messengers, an enraged king that sends troops out to destroy, an open invitation to all and the exclusion of one who accepts that invitation.
- 9:12SPEAKER_00: You know, this gospel sounds more like current headline news than the good news.
- 9:22SPEAKER_00: Yet we cannot just turn away from today's gospel.
- 9:28SPEAKER_00: It is asking something of us.
- 9:32SPEAKER_00: To ignore or gloss over the contradictions and inconsistencies in today's gospel is to ignore or gloss over the contradictions and inconsistencies in each of our lives and in the world.
- 9:52SPEAKER_00: I don't want to do that.
- 9:54SPEAKER_00: Let's face up to ourselves.
- 9:57SPEAKER_00: Let's look at what it is and imagine what it could be.
- 10:04SPEAKER_00: The contradictions and inconsistencies in our lives and our countries today are telling us that something has been lost.
- 10:16SPEAKER_00: Things are not right.
- 10:20SPEAKER_00: That people are sabotaging the life they say they want and the values they claim to hold.
- 10:30SPEAKER_00: They are betraying themselves, us, and the kingdom.
- 10:36SPEAKER_00: Today's gospel is a mirror holding before us all of the contradictions and inconsistencies of our lives and the world.
- 10:50SPEAKER_00: I wonder what contradictions and inconsistencies today's gospel is showing us about ourselves, about our countries, about the ways in which we treat each other.
- 11:08SPEAKER_00: What's missing?
- 11:10SPEAKER_00: What's not right?
- 11:13SPEAKER_00: What is this gospel asking us to wrestle with?
- 11:18SPEAKER_00: What is it asking nations and the leaders of nations to wrestle with?
- 11:28SPEAKER_00: I wonder if Jesus is telling this parable and hoping to shake us up, hoping to wake us up.
- 11:39SPEAKER_00: I wonder if he's hoping that we'll say, No, Jesus, we have followed your life, we've listened to your words, we have seen what you do, we know, we absolutely know that there is more to the kingdom than this.
- 12:04SPEAKER_00: Don't you look at the world today and think there's got to be more than this?
- 12:11SPEAKER_00: Don't you hear the cries of people and say to yourself there's got to be more than this?
- 12:20SPEAKER_00: Don't you look at the brokenness, the injustice, the hurt, and say to yourself we can do better.
- 12:32SPEAKER_00: If you do, you are absolutely correct.
- 12:41SPEAKER_00: I think we all want that joyous kingdom.
- 12:46SPEAKER_00: I think that's why we have faith.
- 12:49SPEAKER_00: I think that's why you and I struggle with these texts.
- 12:54SPEAKER_00: I think that's why we say our prayers and we weep.
- 13:00SPEAKER_00: We've heard the calling of something much more.
- 13:08SPEAKER_00: What is that more for you?
- 13:14SPEAKER_00: What does more look like in the face of one who has been excluded and told that he or she doesn't belong?
- 13:27SPEAKER_00: What is that more amidst violence and killing?
- 13:34SPEAKER_00: What would more be when power is abused and people are invaded, hurt and oppressed?
- 13:46SPEAKER_00: What would more look like when we turn on one another?
- 13:53SPEAKER_00: How would more respond when we say things like that's not my problem he got what he deserved Why should I care?
- 14:07SPEAKER_00: Or get involved What would more of that kingdom look like in your life in your relationship?
- 14:19SPEAKER_00: In the conflicts and struggles you have with others?
- 14:25SPEAKER_00: What does the more what would the more of that kingdom look like in your life?
- 14:32SPEAKER_00: In your relationship?
- 14:34SPEAKER_00: In the conflicts and the struggles that you have with others?
- 14:39SPEAKER_00: What does the more of that joyous kingdom ask of you in the criticisms and doubts you have of yourself and others?
- 14:52SPEAKER_00: What would that more offer when you feel overwhelmed and lost?
- 15:04SPEAKER_00: I think that more would be the real kingdom of heaven here on earth.
- 15:16SPEAKER_00: That kingdom that's been lost, the one that needs to be recovered.
- 15:23SPEAKER_00: It's the kingdom that speaks of love, compassion, forgiveness, mercy, kindness, beauty, and hope.
- 15:40SPEAKER_00: If that's truly what we want, if that really is what we seek when we pray thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven, then you and I must become those things.
- 16:08SPEAKER_00: To become the more for each other and for the life of the world.
