- 0:40My name is Annabelle and I am your Wednesday Mini Tech Scroll
- 0:43host and also the deputy editor of the youth digital media brand
- 0:47Centennial Weld. Welcome back to Mini Tech
- 0:50Scroll, everyone. I can't believe this is our
- 0:52first episode of the week. Obviously, Lauren has been sick
- 0:55and then I was sick last week. So winter is really getting the
- 0:59best of. I thought it was so funny that I
- 1:02couldn't do my job because I lost my voice.
- 1:04Like never in my life did I think that this would be where
- 1:08I'm at. But even though we've had a
- 1:10quiet week so far, I think the rest of the week should be a
- 1:13return to regular scheduled programming.
- 1:16So thank you everyone for being so patient.
- 1:19But other than that, Please remember to rate, review and
- 1:22subscribe. And also feel free to check out
- 1:24the Buy me a Coffee link in the description if you are so
- 1:27inclined. OK, let's just get into to the
- 1:30content for this week. I will say I feel like there
- 1:32have been a lot of random, maybe smaller stories pop up in the
- 1:35past week. So we won't have time to get
- 1:38through all of them. But I have picked the ones that
- 1:41I don't know if you would have heard of or the ones that I kind
- 1:44of thought you would find the most interesting.
- 1:46So yes, let's get into it. My first story that I wanted to
- 1:49talk about today was one that I saw reported by 404 Media and it
- 1:53was about an item that is being sold on TikTok shop.
- 1:56According to Rosie Thomas for the publication, GPS Track are
- 2:00being sold on TikTok shop and are being marketed as tools to
- 2:03track and even stalk a romantic partner.
- 2:06As she explained quote four O 4 media found a handful of
- 2:09accounts promoting these types of trackers and there are
- 2:12several different versions on the TikTok shop.
- 2:15Once a user clicks from the videos into TikTok shop, the
- 2:18algorithm began to show us many more listings.
- 2:20One of the clips we saw has 86,000 likes and links to a
- 2:24tracker that had 32,000 sales. Another from the same vendor
- 2:28currently has 97,000 sales and there are several accounts
- 2:31offering the same products with similar branding and scripts.
- 2:34In the comment of one of the videos a user says quote I
- 2:38bought some and put it on the cars of girls I find attractive
- 2:41at the gym. The original poster response
- 2:44with OK questionable to say the least.
- 2:47The article did mention one account specifically which I did
- 2:50try and check out myself but it appears it has been deleted
- 2:54since then. That being said though, I did
- 2:56come across one myself that was literally selling a GPS tracker
- 2:59with the hook that someone should buy it if they think
- 3:02their wife is cheating on them. I will insert that clip now so
- 3:06you can hear it for yourself. Suspect your wife is cheating on
- 3:08you? Maybe it's time for you to get
- 3:10this. It's not an air tag, it's a real
- 3:12GPS tracker. Unlike the air tag, this one
- 3:15doesn't send alerts or sounds to let you know it's being tracked.
- 3:18It's a little black device with a magnet and you can hide it
- 3:20anywhere. It comes with data, so even if
- 3:23it goes to the other side of the world, you can still track it.
- 3:25I came across quite a few of these videos, many of which had
- 3:28the small little paid partnership banner at the
- 3:30bottom. So this obviously suggested that
- 3:33it was being paid for by the brand or some kind of
- 3:35partnership. And like I said, many of them
- 3:38had similar marketing, which makes me think whether this
- 3:41messaging is coming from the brand itself.
- 3:44But either way, I feel like it would have to be okayed by the
- 3:47brand if it's a paid partnership.
- 3:48So that's already pretty unfortunate.
- 3:50And just a little bit sauce. Obviously I understand how
- 3:53location tracking can be useful. I literally have all of my
- 3:56friends locations on find my, but the way this is all being
- 3:59marketed is just so icky. It's essentially normalizing
- 4:03stalk away, which is often putting women in harm's way,
- 4:07even though I saw a lot of these as paid partnerships.
- 4:10The four O 4 article though does note that many of these GPS
- 4:13trackers are being sold on TikTok shop like I've already
- 4:16mentioned, but we don't have TikTok shop here in Australia.
- 4:19So I couldn't obviously check that for myself.
- 4:21And that also explains, I think, why I saw a lot of paid
- 4:24partnerships. But I think this kind of shows
- 4:27why I wanted to cover this story because I feel like it indicates
- 4:31just how unregulated TikTok Shop is in practice.
- 4:35To be fair, the discourse around questionable products being sold
- 4:38on TikTok Shop is nothing new. I think that is basically being
- 4:41around since TikTok Shop was first rolled out in the US in
- 4:44September 2023, where a vast majority of users were
- 4:48frustrated by the uptake. At the time, I saw many claiming
- 4:51that it pushed promotional content and allowed for the sale
- 4:54of counterfeit goods and just makes the app feel overall
- 4:57dystopian, which I definitely kind of agree with, but I
- 5:00haven't seen too much commentary about how the seeming lack of
- 5:04regulation on TikTok Shop is actually dangerous rather than
- 5:08just annoying. Having said that, I did go have
- 5:11a look at the prohibited products policy on the US TikTok
- 5:14Shop website to see what exactly is and isn't allowed to be sold
- 5:18on TikTok Shop. And there was an extensive list,
- 5:21but among the list was quote, security and privacy products.
- 5:25As it's written, UN quote security and privacy products
- 5:28are prohibited from sale on TikTok shop.
- 5:31It then goes on to list a whole bunch of categories which
- 5:33included quote any other products that may violate or
- 5:37facilitate the violation of an individual's privacy.
- 5:40And I feel like it's definitely safe to say that these GPSS fall
- 5:45into this category, especially by the way that they're
- 5:47marketed. Even though this is the case, it
- 5:50clearly hasn't stopped these kinds of products from being
- 5:52sold on the platform. I do think it is a bit of a
- 5:55whack A mole game with the amount of products available on
- 5:58TikTok Shop, but I also don't really think that is a kind of
- 6:00excuse on TikTok Shop. My next story for today is based
- 6:04on another article that I thought was kind of interesting
- 6:07that I've come across recently and it's all about AI avatars
- 6:10and selling likeness. So I saw this piece in the New
- 6:14York Times and it spoke about this one man named Scott Jack
- 6:17Mean. I'm so sorry if I pronounced
- 6:19that wrong. I probably did.
- 6:21But he sold his likeness and is now seeing his face pop up in
- 6:24different ads and a wide range of ads at that.
- 6:28He has reportedly seen an avatar who looks like him trying to
- 6:31sell supplements and another one doing a Spanish speaking ad and
- 6:34he doesn't speak Spanish, the piece reads.
- 6:37Quote The ads were made using his digital avatar, fueled by
- 6:40artificial intelligence, after he licensed his likeness to
- 6:44TikTok last year. Now a version of Mr. Jackman is
- 6:47out on the Internet peddling whatever the advertiser might
- 6:50want him to sell, as long as it complies with TikTok marketing
- 6:53guidelines. It's what Mr. Jackman signed up
- 6:56for, but now that he has seen his avatar out in the wild, he
- 6:59has regrets. So Scott is reportedly part of
- 7:03the AI avatars that TikTok introduced in the middle of last
- 7:06year. These avatars were basically
- 7:08available for brands to use to promote a certain product.
- 7:11There are reportedly a variety of them available where the
- 7:14brand can essentially select which avatar they feel fits the
- 7:17messaging of the product. I thought this story was
- 7:20important to include because arguably this is a budding area
- 7:24of the digital economy and I feel like it's valid to presume
- 7:27that with these people selling their likeness that they would
- 7:30be paid a decent amount of money, especially because this
- 7:33likeness can be used to promote anything.
- 7:36But according to Scott's experience, this isn't
- 7:38necessarily the case. According to the article, Scott
- 7:41had been paid $750 and a trip to the Bay Area for the work.
- 7:45Other unnamed and named people feature in the story and they
- 7:49had a similar experience with most being paid under $1000.
- 7:54And to make that is worse, these people do not receive any
- 7:57royalties when businesses use their avatars.
- 8:00Obviously this benefits TikTok and the brands that are using
- 8:03these avatars despite the ethical questions around it,
- 8:06because at the end of the day, they are looking at the bottom
- 8:09line and cutting costs. But in the article, the
- 8:12journalist kind of position Scott as feeling uncomfortable
- 8:15with his decision. And I feel like that's
- 8:17definitely understandable. But I do think it puts it even
- 8:20more in perspective about how weird and what an outer body
- 8:24experience it can be to see yourself in AI generated
- 8:27content. And of course, that is even when
- 8:30you consent to it alone, when you don't.
- 8:32This is a bit of a tangent, but I recently started reading the
- 8:35new Laura Bates book which is all about AI and sexism, and she
- 8:39explained her experiences of seeing herself in a deep fake
- 8:42and reading about that was definitely really telling.
- 8:45Obviously this is a different circumstance to Scott, but I do
- 8:48imagine some of the same confronting feelings would pop
- 8:51up. Anyway, I can report back when I
- 8:53finished that book. So far I'm enjoying it, but it
- 8:56definitely is intense. But yes, back to the story, I
- 8:59think selling likeness is definitely an interesting
- 9:02concept and one that we'll probably see more and more of
- 9:05because people may do it to make a quick buck or even in the
- 9:08pursuit of fame or virality. While I don't think it's
- 9:11entirely ethical for a whole host of reasons, including the
- 9:15fact that it will put actors out of work, I'm not sure if I can
- 9:19really see brands or tech platforms not going down this
- 9:22path. At the very least there should
- 9:25be guardrails though put in place for what your likeness can
- 9:28be used for if you sell it, and these people should definitely
- 9:32be getting some sort of continuous compensation for the
- 9:35use of their likeness. I do wonder though if government
- 9:38laws against non consensual deep fakes will impact how easy it
- 9:42will become to license likeness. Like I remember a month or so
- 9:46ago I saw headlines talking about how I think it was Denmark
- 9:49was planning on changing copyright law to ensure that
- 9:51everyone has the right to their own body and facial features and
- 9:56voice. But yeah, those are kind of my
- 9:58thoughts on that. I'm sorry.
- 10:00I feel like it was a little bit chaotic, but I thought it was a
- 10:02valid story to include. To end off today, I have two
- 10:05shorter stories. The 1st is an update on the GPT
- 10:085 rollout. So Lawrence spoke about this
- 10:11last week when I was off sick so I would definitely recommend
- 10:14checking out last weeks episode if you need the whole breakdown.
- 10:18But basically GBT 5 was rolled out and Uses were not happy
- 10:22about it. There were a couple of
- 10:23complaints, but the main one was that Uses felt GBT 5 was kind of
- 10:27cold and distant, especially compared to earlier versions of
- 10:32ChatGPT. I know that may kind of sound
- 10:35crazy to some of you, but many users have built genuine
- 10:38connections with the AI, whether that be a romantic, platonic, or
- 10:42even therapeutic relationship. So the switch up to more formal
- 10:47and maybe more professional tone, if that's even the right
- 10:50word, I don't know, felt very stark to some users.
- 10:54Now, though, it seems that Open AI is responding to the backlash
- 10:57by making GPT Five more friendly and supportive.
- 11:01On August 16th, Open AI shared the update on X writing quote.
- 11:05We're making GPT 5 warmer and friendlier based on the feedback
- 11:09that it felt too formal before. Changes are subtle, but ChatGPT
- 11:13should feel more approachable now.
- 11:15You'll notice small genuine touches like good question or
- 11:18great start, not flattery. Internal tests show no rise of
- 11:22sycophancy compared to the previous GPT 5.
- 11:24Personality changes may take up to a day to roll out.
- 11:27More updates soon. Open AICEO.
- 11:29Sam Altman quoted the tweet, adding most users should like
- 11:33GPT 5 better soon. The change is rolling out over
- 11:36the next day. The real solution here remains
- 11:38letting users customize ChatGPT style much more.
- 11:41We're working on that. I feel like people can use
- 11:44ChatGPT however they want to use ChatGPT.
- 11:47For me, I don't really care if it's friendly or not.
- 11:49I'm not really someone who actively uses it for personal
- 11:53matters. And look, I can definitely
- 11:55understand how it can provide a sense of comfort for people in
- 11:58times where they maybe just feel like they need someone to talk
- 12:01to. But while it can be helpful, we
- 12:03are definitely seeing how this kind of tone has negative
- 12:06effects with people falling into ChatGPT induced psychosis.
- 12:10As we have discussed before, I'm kind of in the camp that if open
- 12:14AI is allowing a more friendly tone from within the AI, they
- 12:18really need appropriate guard rails and safety measures that
- 12:22can prevent users from going down these kind of dangerous
- 12:24paths. I'm not sure if they have that
- 12:26to be quite honest or to be honest if they ever will,
- 12:30because at the end of the day, so many of these companies just
- 12:32care about users, even if it is to the detriment of their mental
- 12:37health or ability to communicate and so on.
- 12:40I'm curious though, what you think about open AI kind of
- 12:42backtracking and rolling out this more friendly approach.
- 12:45Again, please let me know what you think, I'm really curious.
- 12:48OK, my last story for today is one that I needed to talk about
- 12:52and I will admit it is a little bit unserious, but I needed to
- 12:56talk about it because I am simply so confused and it's just
- 13:00crazy. I don't even know if I have a
- 13:01take on it or anything, but we need to talk about how little
- 13:05Michaela collaborated Question Mark with Nancy Pelosi.
- 13:09Genuinely, what is this crossover?
- 13:11We have obviously spoken about little Michaela before, but she
- 13:14is definitely one of the most mainstream fictional slash
- 13:17virtual influences I think we've ever seen.
- 13:20Her main platform is Instagram, and I feel like she's been
- 13:22around for like 10 years at this point.
- 13:25And of course, Nancy Pelosi has long been one of the most
- 13:28influential Democratic politicians in the United
- 13:30States, having served as the speaker of the House of
- 13:33Representatives twice. But four days ago Michaela
- 13:37posted to her Instagram with a picture with the caption quote
- 13:41me vibing to Gracie Abrams and I look up it's literally Speaker
- 13:45Pelosi Shout out outside lands for this iconic link up lol.
- 13:49And the picture was in fact with Nancy Pelosi also it seemed my
- 13:53reaction to this was literally just confusion like what does
- 13:57this mean, why is this necessary?
- 13:59How did this happen? And it seemed people online had
- 14:02like the exact same questions as I did.
- 14:05But I have not seen anyone cover this.
- 14:08And this is exactly why mini text scroll exists.
- 14:10We're filling the gap, I fear. I don't know why this happened.
- 14:13I am wondering if this was just a coincidence, like if the
- 14:16creators or people behind Law Michaela or management or
- 14:19whatever saw Nancy Pelosi and took a picture with her and then
- 14:23like dropped the influencer in. Or I guess a more strategic and
- 14:27or sinister reason would be to use an influencer to father a
- 14:31political cause, which is, of course, something that we've
- 14:33seen more and more lately. Throughout the 2024 presidential
- 14:37election in the United States, there were many rumors swelling
- 14:41around the Trump campaign alleging that they were paying
- 14:43influences to support them. I don't really buy that this is
- 14:47the case in this instance. It's not like there's a campaign
- 14:50running right now and Michaela is not like super relevant or
- 14:53anything. But I just thought I would point
- 14:55this out because I really don't know why this happened and this
- 15:00is a potential, even though I don't really think it's the
- 15:02reason why. I guess it could also be though
- 15:05a way for a politician to like express support for AI.
- 15:10But all of this just seems like I'm looking too far into this.
- 15:13I am so confused and I need to know why this happened so badly.
- 15:19This is now my Roman Empire. I need answers.
- 15:22If anyone else shares my interest please let me know.
- 15:25Please share why you think this happened, how this happened.
- 15:29I'm so confused. Like what is 2025?
- 15:31What is the timeline we are living in?
- 15:33Because I actually just don't know anymore.
- 15:35Well that is a bit of a fun one I guess.
- 15:37To end off mini text scroll today.
- 15:39I will be back with another episode next week, presuming I
- 15:42don't lose my voice again. And Lauren will speak to you
- 15:46soon. Thanks for listening.
- 15:47Bye.
