- 0:25Welcome to Do I Need My Racket?
- 0:26podcast brought to you by In Her Name Foundation, and I am Cindy Swain,
- 0:30the host of this show. Well, this is episode number 37 called Words Matter.
- 0:38Now, I know we've
- 0:40all heard that before, and it might sound kind of mundane that words matter
- 0:44because we all know that, but it's how we use them and how we put them in context.
- 0:49It's how we communicate with them
- 0:52that I want to focus on in this episode because words really do matter.
- 0:58So one of the things that I do when I first get up in the morning,
- 1:03well, actually first I go to the coffee pot,
- 1:06then I go to the couch and I read for a while
- 1:08and I write, I write in my journal.
- 1:11And at the end of every journal entry,
- 1:14no matter what kind of day I'm having,
- 1:16no matter what's going on in my life,
- 1:18good or bad, tragic, hard, happy, whatever,
- 1:22I always end the journal entry with this.
- 1:26Keep reaching, teaching, and touching hearts.
- 1:32Keep listening, learning, thinking, and dreaming big.
- 1:36And keep hoping and loving, and all will be good.
- 1:42So put a pin in that for just a moment, because we're going to return to
- 1:47that at the end of the episode.
- 1:50But I just wanted to put that out there
- 1:52so you could start thinking about those words.
- 1:54So did you know that right now, girls drop out of sports two times the rate
- 2:02that boys do?
- 2:04And the number one reason, it's not fun and there's too much pressure from coaches
- 2:10and parents.
- 2:13And you wonder, where does that exactly break down?
- 2:17And we're going to take a look at that in a minute.
- 2:21Because words matter and how they're used by teachers and parents and coaches,
- 2:27it matters.
- 2:29Our mission statement for In Her Name Foundation is empower, inspire,
- 2:34and create the next generation of young female athletes.
- 2:39And it's the same for the podcast.
- 2:42I'm empowering, inspiring, and creating voices in all the people that I interview
- 2:47and highlighting their story because it's important.
- 2:52They want to share it. People can learn from it.
- 2:56Well, here's an example of when I was listening to some words
- 3:00that kind of made me start to doubt myself.
- 3:04Over the last six months or so,
- 3:07there's been a podcast group that keeps sending me these emails
- 3:11promising me that they can increase downloads
- 3:14and monetize the podcast and all's gonna be great.
- 3:20One after the other, I would delete, delete, delete, delete.
- 3:23Well, for some reason, I decided to read this last one completely.
- 3:27And it said it was offering a 45-minute free consultation session.
- 3:33And I thought, maybe I'll learn something and why could it hurt anything?
- 3:38So I sign up, I get on the Zoom call with this guy.
- 3:41And I'm always curious when there's kind of what I call cold calls like that,
- 3:46when someone reaches out to you and you're not sure about their background,
- 3:51what they're up to.
- 3:52So the first question I asked after introductions was, well, how did you find us?
- 3:57And he punted on that. He said, oh, no, I don't want to talk about that just yet.
- 4:02I want to get into, you know, more about your podcast and, you know,
- 4:06kind of our program.
- 4:08And I thought, okay, well, that's kind of odd, but maybe he still knows something.
- 4:11So he started talking to me just right off the bat, like,
- 4:15so tell me how many downloads that you get per episode or per month?
- 4:20And I said, well, we do a monthly podcast and we probably get a couple hundred.
- 4:25And it's generally we have ongoing downloads for all the episodes.
- 4:30And he goes, well, is it closer to 200 or closer to 150? And I said, closer to two.
- 4:35Well, would you say it's closer to 175 or 200 or, you know, 180?
- 4:40and I'm like, what's the difference between 10 or 15 downloads?
- 4:43I said, well, it's probably a
- 4:44couple hundred. And he goes, well, would you like more downloads?
- 4:48And I said, yeah, I would. Anybody
- 4:50would as a podcaster, right? Well, how does that make you feel?
- 4:55And there he went, right for the
- 4:57feelings. And I fell for it, sort of.
- 4:59How does that make you feel that you kind of ceilinged out
- 5:03at 200 downloads? Does it frustrate you? Are you disappointed?
- 5:08And I said, well, maybe a little bit because you know sometimes
- 5:12when you put a lot of effort into a show you think it's going to be
- 5:15great and it just doesn't go very far um yeah maybe a little and you know
- 5:22then he he said um
- 5:24he said well have you ever thought about stopping the show I said no I haven't
- 5:29thought about stopping it I take a break maybe a month every now and then just
- 5:33because maybe I don't have someone
- 5:35teed up for an interview or I have a lot of other stuff going on
- 5:38and just don't have time to get to
- 5:40it because it takes a lot to put out an episode. There's a lot of editing.
- 5:44There's a lot of reading. There's a lot of research.
- 5:46And there's several hours, I would say 15 to 20 hours to put an
- 5:50episode out on my end anyway. And he said, well, is it worth it?
- 5:54And I said, yeah, it's worth it.
- 5:57We usually do, you know, I do the, I do the episodes for an audience of one.
- 6:02And I started
- 6:03kind of going into our mission statement again. He said, no, no, no, no, no, no.
- 6:06That's the business part of things. I want you to tell me how you feel about this.
- 6:12And I was just kind of, paused for a moment. And then he sent this back.
- 6:17He said, so what I'm understanding that you're
- 6:19saying is you're disappointed and frustrated that you're not getting more downloads
- 6:25and don't have advertisers. And you're thinking about pulling the plug on the show.
- 6:30And I'm like, whoa, I haven't
- 6:32thought about stopping, maybe doing some things differently.
- 6:35But I was kind of taken aback. I was
- 6:37like, he was literally putting words into my mouth
- 6:42and kind of stretching them to create doubt
- 6:46on all the work I've done. So I started backpedaling and I'm trying to explain the
- 6:51foundation and its mission, empower, inspire, create, and, you know, the podcast,
- 6:56why it's Do I Need My Racket? And he goes, no, no, no, no.
- 6:59I, you know, I don't want to, let's go on.
- 7:00We're going to move forward and talk about the four stages of the four levels
- 7:05that we'll go
- 7:06through. You know, and again, ask him, I go, how did you, how did you find us?
- 7:11Why, why did you choose Do I Need My Racket?
- 7:14And he gave a generic answer, like, well, I have a team that goes out
- 7:18and does research and they find these episodes or these shows
- 7:21that they think have potential.
- 7:23I mean, well, he probably said that to about a thousand people, but okay.
- 7:26So clearly he did not know anything about us, but I kept listening.
- 7:30And he said, well, are you ready to proceed forward?
- 7:33And I said, yeah, I am. So let's talk about level one.
- 7:36Level one is we're going to take your show
- 7:38and tear it apart, start from scratch and build it back up.
- 7:43And I thought, oh, I didn't know we needed to do that.
- 7:47You know, I was just, it didn't really give me much time to respond to
- 7:51any of these things either. He's just kind of firing these words at me.
- 7:56Because I was thinking, well, I think our show's pretty good.
- 7:59I mean, I think there's been a lot of great people I've
- 8:01interviewed. I've learned a lot. I've met a lot of new people.
- 8:04And that's what it's really about
- 8:05for me is meeting people and sharing stories.
- 8:09He goes, and then after level one, after we
- 8:12rebuild your podcast, we'll send it through this program that we have to,
- 8:16it's a search engine optimization program, which basically means that, you know,
- 8:22they record the transcript of the
- 8:24episode and then pick keywords out in a description and try to compact that so that
- 8:29when people search or download, do searches for things they want to listen to,
- 8:35the keywords will come up and
- 8:38our podcasts will be up in a higher range of downloads.
- 8:43And I'm like, that makes sense to me.
- 8:46Okay. Yeah, that would be great.
- 8:47And that's something that we've thought about and talked
- 8:48about, but just haven't gotten around to.
- 8:51Level three would be, this is where he said that they
- 8:54would get me on some high profile podcast episodes with other podcasters
- 8:59that would really help with downloads and advertisers.
- 9:02And I thought, well, I've been on a couple and there are a couple
- 9:07more I might be on and it kind of grows, but you know,
- 9:09that would be interesting to do that. And
- 9:11I'd be kind of, kind of started to do a little panic.
- 9:13It's like, I don't really want to be on
- 9:15a million different shows. That's not me. I've kind of raised my anxiety for a bit.
- 9:21And then level four, he said, well, before we get to level four,
- 9:25you have to sign a non-disclosure agreement
- 9:27because what we do there is proprietary
- 9:29and we're going to send your podcast through an algorithm.
- 9:33And then it was a lot of complicated tech terms that I didn't understand.
- 9:37And I was like, whoa,
- 9:39but he made me feel like my podcast
- 9:42and foundation was literally on their last dying breath,
- 9:47that we wouldn't survive unless we hired this agency which just isn't true
- 9:53but for a moment I kind of had those thoughts in my mind so
- 9:57then he goes well are you ready to move forward and I said
- 10:00sure because I'm thinking you know well how much is this going to cost
- 10:04and he said well right up
- 10:05front it's fourteen thousand dollars and I think I laughed and I don't know
- 10:11which hit the floor first my ass from my chair or the teeth
- 10:15that fell out of my mouth I was like fourteen thousand
- 10:18dollars? We don't have that kind of money.
- 10:20And he goes, well, if you pay, you know, we could do it
- 10:24today. And if you pay me $5,000 today and $5,000 in 30 days, we can make it 10,000.
- 10:31And it's like, we are a small nonprofit,
- 10:35which I explained to him numerous times throughout our chat. And yeah,
- 10:42we don't have that. We don't have that money in our budget.
- 10:44Well, then he goes, well, what could you afford?
- 10:47How about if we did four payments for $12,000, $3,000 a month for the next four
- 10:53months. And I'm thinking, you know what?
- 10:55He's not going to take answer for, he's not going to take no for an answer.
- 10:59So I pulled the parachute cord and said, I can't make any decisions unless I
- 11:05consult with my board.
- 11:07Got off the call, which was at the start was supposed to be just a 45
- 11:14minute freebie, which ended up into an hour and a half of persuasive debate.
- 11:20So when I got off
- 11:22the call I began to think I thought this is just ridiculous this shouldn't cost
- 11:27this much we're not interested but so I sent that back and I in an email
- 11:31that said it's just not for us thank you
- 11:33for your time and I asked him out of curiosity if we did our due diligence
- 11:39and paid all that money
- 11:40and after four to six months we go through your four-step program
- 11:43and nothing changes
- 11:44what are the guarantees he said there are none no guarantees after I pay all
- 11:53that money and I was like, do I have idiot written on my forehead somewhere?
- 11:59Who on, apparently people pay this
- 12:01because he threw those numbers out there, but not us. That's just not what we do.
- 12:06And as I did more
- 12:07investigating was level one and level two, we can do that for free on our own.
- 12:11And I'm already getting on some other people's podcast show,
- 12:15but the only thing he had magical was level four with
- 12:17some mystical algorithm, which I'm not really interested in that.
- 12:20And it doesn't cost 14, It shouldn't be $14,000 to go through one stage.
- 12:25But anyway, he wasn't satisfied with that.
- 12:28He sent me more emails. He said, well, maybe you'd be interested in this program
- 12:31where we would go through the first two stages,
- 12:33level one, level two for $3,000.
- 12:36And if you don't start to see results,
- 12:38we'll refund your money.
- 12:40And I was thinking, well, where was the refund when we were talking $14,000?
- 12:45And I still didn't respond.
- 12:49And then he sent me one more. He goes, well, I want you to do this.
- 12:51I want you to run your show through a test
- 12:54where you pick out keywords and see if it pops up on Spotify or Apple downloads.
- 13:00And no, I didn't even do that because I know that's what we need to do,
- 13:03but we still have some other work before we get there.
- 13:06And I didn't respond, so I just kind of let it go.
- 13:13But I learned a lot from that phone conversation and that Zoom call.
- 13:18Words matter. They can be persuasive.
- 13:19But I, at this age of 64, have enough insight and wisdom
- 13:24to understand when someone is trying to persuade me
- 13:28or think me into thinking something that I'm not,
- 13:32which leads me back to young people.
- 13:39Young people are so impressionable.
- 13:43They are, and words matter to them,
- 13:45and they stay with them. Those things that you tell youth
- 13:48will stick with them a lifetime.
- 13:50And hopefully we're sharing words that matter,
- 13:55that empower, inspire, and create, hopefully.
- 14:00I had an experience when I was in eighth grade,
- 14:03eighth grade volleyball coach. I was one of the only kids
- 14:05that could do an overhead serve instead of an underhead bump.
- 14:08I was on the A-team, practicing really well.
- 14:11We go to play our crosstown rival, Kennedy Middle School.
- 14:15I was at Hayes Junior High, and I could not hit anything over the net.
- 14:21Nothing. Not one serve went in.
- 14:22I was so nervous, and I was so upset how I performed afterwards.
- 14:27It just felt terrible.
- 14:29But the next practice, the coach said, you know what?
- 14:33I'm benching you. You're going to the B-team because you can't play under pressure.
- 14:36you choked.
- 14:38So what I took from that conversation that I carried with me, even in my collegiate
- 14:44tennis career, is I can't play under pressure, which wasn't true at all.
- 14:52Fortunately, my freshman
- 14:54year, starting my freshman year, I tumbled onto the high school tennis team,
- 14:57and I had a coach
- 14:58that believed in me and used words that made me believe in myself. You can do this.
- 15:05You can get through this. Have faith. Believe in yourself.
- 15:09And those words are the ones that are etched in my heart to this day.
- 15:15I'm going to give you some examples of words that perhaps actually should,
- 15:23not perhaps, that should be appalling that people use today.
- 15:28Say, for instance, our national leaders.
- 15:32They're throwing around words that everyone is hearing without any responsibility or
- 15:39accountability at all.
- 15:40What if you had a really shy high school student that sat in the back of
- 15:46biology class, finally got the nerve to ask a question for some clarification,
- 15:52and he or she
- 15:53stood up and said, teacher, can I, would you please explain that last bit?
- 15:59I don't quite
- 16:00understand. And the teacher turned and said this, that's a stupid question.
- 16:06Sit down, piggy.
- 16:10appalling, right?
- 16:11But that word, that phrase, those phrases, those words have been used
- 16:16from a national leader.
- 16:19What if you had a son or daughter on a basketball team and you're
- 16:26practicing, playing really hard and doing everything right in drills
- 16:29and the coach calls
- 16:30you over and says, wow, you're playing really well, but your brother's a retard.
- 16:37Yes, national leader. Use that word. It's appalling. Absolutely appalling.
- 16:43I'm going to say this again. We need
- 16:46people that use words with youth that empower, inspire, and create.
- 16:53So here are a couple of other instances which I think are kind of interesting.
- 16:59I had the privilege of being the public address
- 17:02announcer for Lansing Catholic Sports for 10 years, 2013 to 2023, and I loved it.
- 17:10It was kind of a mission for me.
- 17:13I loved infusing energy into what was going on to, you know, get people excited
- 17:19and into the game or the match
- 17:22and I pain I painstakingly always took time out to make sure
- 17:27if there was someone's name
- 17:29that I did not know how to pronounce I would seek out a coach a player
- 17:34or even the player themselves and say hey
- 17:37when you would you tell me how you say your name and
- 17:41it would you could tell it just a bright spot went on in their heart
- 17:43because someone actually took the time to do
- 17:46that I can remember many a basketball game or track meet where Swain my last
- 17:52name, S-W-A-I-N, not hard.
- 17:54When my son and daughter were competing in the same track meet,
- 17:58our name was said four different ways, swine, swing, swan, and swim.
- 18:04And you know, they laughed about it, we laughed about it, but it does matter.
- 18:09I sat through a girls varsity basketball game one
- 18:12year at opposing school, and this kid was called Laverne all night long,
- 18:17despite multiple corrections
- 18:19that her name was Lauren. We all laughed it off, but it did really bother her.
- 18:23So that's important. And so that was one of the things that I did.
- 18:27The other thing was I was privileged to everything
- 18:31that was said or done on the sidelines and in the stands.
- 18:35I heard it all from players, refs, coaches, student section, you name it.
- 18:39I heard and saw it.
- 18:41Saw some good stuff, saw some not so good stuff.
- 18:44There was an instance where, varsity volleyball match,
- 18:49Lansing Catholic was soundly beating another Lansing area school.
- 18:55The whole volleyball match maybe took 45 minutes max.
- 18:59The other team scored one or two points a set.
- 19:03But in the middle of the second set, the coach took a timeout and she goes,
- 19:07you guys aren't playing hard, you're lazy.
- 19:10Come out here.
- 19:10And she had them all line up on the floor, even the kids on the bench,
- 19:16had them drop down and do push-ups for 60 seconds.
- 19:21Thinking maybe that might motivate them to play better?
- 19:24Are you kidding me? They played worse after that.
- 19:28They just wanted to get off the floor and I don't blame them.
- 19:32Here's another example.
- 19:34junior varsity basketball game where the opposing coach was screaming at these
- 19:39girls all evening long. Don't do that. You're not fast enough.
- 19:43You know, just everything was in a negative tone all night.
- 19:47And she finally in the third quarter called a timeout, pulled this one kid aside and
- 19:57said, you're terrible. You're an embarrassment.
- 20:01Go sit on the bench where you belong. Shocking.
- 20:07Yes. Yes. Shocking. I couldn't believe it. So the girl went on the end of the bench.
- 20:13She was,
- 20:14you know, quietly sobbing. And later on, a little bit later in the game, the coach
- 20:17called her to put her back in.
- 20:19And that kid, good for her, she used her voice and said,
- 20:23no, I'm not playing for you. Here's one more example. Varsity girls basketball.
- 20:33Lansing
- 20:34Catholic was soundly getting beat by about 25, 30 points in the third quarter.
- 20:40The opposing school,
- 20:42Lansing Area School, that particular coach had a history of not, you know,
- 20:47clearing the bench even when the game was at hand.
- 20:51So as usual, all the starters or most of the top players played the
- 20:55entire game despite the game being already decided probably midway through the
- 21:00third quarter. Well,
- 21:01after the game was over, one of the girls on the bench got up her nerve
- 21:05and used her voice and went up to the coach politely and said, you know, coach,
- 21:10I was just wondering why I didn't get to play in
- 21:14the game. And this coach ripped her apart. Coach became unglued. Eyes were bulging.
- 21:23Face was red.
- 21:25Veins were poking out and said, you don't deserve to play. You're not very good.
- 21:32I've got two division one players.
- 21:34They're going to go to division one schools and play basketball next
- 21:38year. You belong on the bench. I could not believe it. Shocking. Appalling. Yeah.
- 21:48The coach walks off the floor under the locker room.
- 21:52This girl looks at her mom in tears and says, I don't want to stay
- 21:56for the boys game. I just want to go home.
- 21:59So her mom gathered her things, walked down the bleachers
- 22:03onto the court, put her arm around her daughter,
- 22:06and they walked out of the gym together. Shocking,
- 22:10appalling, right? Words matter. Words matter.
- 22:13And we need to think about how we're using words
- 22:16that influences kids because they remember those words, especially
- 22:21when you're young. But here's a happy ending to all of that.
- 22:27One of my most favorite seasons and my favorite teams,
- 22:33Lansing Catholic varsity softball.
- 22:36It was after a coaching change, a lot of seniors graduated, then the pandemic,
- 22:43and there were barely enough kids to just make field just a varsity team.
- 22:49And some of those kids the coach convinced to play were freshmen, and some were,
- 22:54you know, upperclassmen, and many of them had never even donned a mitt,
- 22:58stood in a batter's box, or even knew how to hold on to a bat.
- 23:03Their goal for that season was to be able to play a complete seven-inning game
- 23:09and not get run-ruled in the third inning by 15 or in the fifth inning by 10.
- 23:16And the thing that was amazing about those kids, they worked hard.
- 23:23They never quit. They cheered from the dugout.
- 23:27They stood in the batter's box, knees shaking, swinging that bat.
- 23:31You would never have known if you listened to what they were saying
- 23:35that they were getting trounced on the field.
- 23:39Never would have known.
- 23:42Loved it.
- 23:43Loved it. Because you know why?
- 23:44The coach used words that mattered, that inspired, that empowered,
- 23:51that created within them something new.
- 23:54They felt a part of a team. They felt important.
- 23:57They were valued. It didn't matter what the score was, win-loss record.
- 24:03They were part of something, and those girls were having fun.
- 24:10Yeah, having fun.
- 24:13So let's go back to what I shared with you at the very beginning of this episode.
- 24:19Those same words that I end every session when I'm writing in my journal.
- 24:24Keep reaching out to others.
- 24:30Keep teaching things that empower, inspire, and create.
- 24:36Keep touching hearts.
- 24:40Keep listening to others and what they're saying.
- 24:44It's important. And learn new things.
- 24:46Step outside your comfort zone and learn something new.

- 25:18and keep loving.

- 25:36if we can all do that, then all will be good because words matter.
