- 0:03Welcome to the Daily Quote podcast, designed to kick start
- 0:07your day in a positive way. I'm your host, Andrew Mcgibbon
- 0:10for July 30th. Today is International Day of
- 0:14Friendship, a holiday that might sound like something Hallmark
- 0:17invented to sell more greeting cards, but it's actually a
- 0:21United Nations observance. Established in 2011, the idea
- 0:27was simple but profound. Promote friendship between
- 0:31peoples, countries and cultures as a way to inspire peace and
- 0:35build bridges across our differences.
- 0:39What I love about this holiday is that it recognizes something
- 0:42we all know, but sometimes forget, that friendship isn't
- 0:46just a nice to have in life, it's essential.
- 0:50Good friends don't just make the good times better, they make the
- 0:54hard times bearable. They're the people who show up
- 0:57when you need them, who celebrate your wins without
- 1:00jealousy, and who tell you the truth even when it's not what
- 1:05you want to hear. Speaking of truth telling
- 1:07friends, today's quote comes from the ancient Greek
- 1:11philosopher Aristotle, who once said friendship is a single soul
- 1:17dwelling in two bodies. Now, Aristotle wasn't being
- 1:22overly romantic or mystical here.
- 1:25He was being precise. He spent a lot of time thinking
- 1:29about different types of friendship, and what he
- 1:32discovered was that true friendship goes beyond just
- 1:36enjoying someone's company or finding them useful.
- 1:39It's about a genuine connection where two people truly
- 1:42understand each other, support each other's growth, and share
- 1:46something deeper than surface level interests.
- 1:50Think about your closest friends for a moment.
- 1:53Aren't they the people who just get you?
- 1:56The ones where you can sit in comfortable silence, or finish
- 2:00each other's sentences, or laugh until your sides hurt over
- 2:04something that wouldn't be funny to anyone else?
- 2:07That's what Aristotle was talking about, that rare
- 2:11connection where the boundaries between you and me become a
- 2:15little blurred because you're so In Sync.
- 2:20But here's the thing about this kind of friendship, It doesn't
- 2:24happen overnight. It's built through shared
- 2:28experiences, honest conversations, showing up
- 2:30consistently, and yes, sometimes working through disagreements.
- 2:35It's choosing to invest in someone else's life and letting
- 2:39them invest in yours. So today on International Day of
- 2:44Friendship, maybe reach out to someone who's been that kind of
- 2:48friend to you. Send a text, make a call, or if
- 2:53you're feeling really radical, write an actual letter.
- 2:57Let them know you appreciate them.
- 3:00And if you're looking to build deeper friendships, be the kind
- 3:03of friend you'd want to have reliable, genuine, and ready to
- 3:08share your soul with another. That's going to do it.
- 3:12For today, I'm Andrew McGivern. Signing off for now but I'll be
- 3:16back tomorrow. Same pod time, same pod station
- 3:22with another daily quote.
