- Fernando Mendoza goes first overall, LeBron turns back the clock in overtime, and the Eagles just traded for a pass rusher and gave him a hundred million bucks. It's been one of those twenty-four hours where you can't put your phone down. Let's get into it. Welcome to The Sports Hangover Daily, I'm Michael Benatar. We gotta start with the Lakers, because LeBron James just did LeBron James things in Houston last night. Lakers won one twelve to one oh eight in overtime. LA leads this series three to nothing. And look — Kevin Durant missed his second game of the series with a sprained ankle, so yes, Houston was shorthanded. But the Rockets were UP in the final seconds of regulation. They had this game. LeBron hit a tying three in the closing seconds to force overtime, and then Marcus Smart — Marcus Smart! — took over in the extra period. Smart dropped eight of the Lakers' overtime points, finished with twenty-one points, ten assists, and five steals. LeBron had twenty-nine, thirteen boards, six assists, three steals, and a block. And he threw an alley-oop to Bronny in the first half, because apparently this man treats playoff basketball like a family outing. Rui Hachimura added twenty-two. Give Houston credit — Alperen Sengun was a monster with thirty-three and sixteen, Amen Thompson had twenty-six and eleven, Jabari Smith had twenty-four. They played their hearts out. But no KD, no closer, no answer for LeBron in crunch time. Three to nothing is a death sentence. No team has ever come back from that in NBA history. The Rockets' season is circling the drain, and honestly? I'm not sure getting Durant back changes the math at this point. Alright, let's fly around the rest of it because there is a LOT happening. In Philly, the Celtics took Game Three, one oh eight to one hundred. Jayson Tatum was fine for three quarters and then just flipped a switch — eleven of his twenty-five came in the fourth, shooting four for five including two threes. Jaylen Brown matched him with twenty-five of his own. Tyrese Maxey had thirty-one for the Sixers, but it wasn't enough. Boston leads two to one. That fourth quarter from Tatum is exactly the kind of thing Celtics fans have been begging for. When he decides to take over late, this team is really hard to beat. Over in Portland, the Spurs won one twenty to one oh eight WITHOUT Victor Wembanyama. Wemby's still in concussion protocol, was on the bench in street clothes. And Stephon Castle said cool, I got this — dropped thirty-three points. Dylan Harper added twenty-seven. San Antonio leads two to one. If Wemby comes back for Game Four on Sunday? That's a scary squad. If he doesn't, Castle and Harper just proved they can carry the load on the road. Now, the NFL Draft. Day Two was a feeding frenzy. The Browns are clearly going all-in on offense under Todd Monken — they grabbed Washington wideout Denzel Boston at thirty-nine. This kid had a hundred and thirty-two catches and over seventeen hundred yards in his career at Washington. Pair that with Spencer Fano and KC Concepcion from Round One, and Cleveland's building something on that side of the ball. The Patriots moved up to fifty-five to grab edge rusher Gabe Jacas from Illinois. The Falcons took Clemson corner Avieon Terrell at forty-eight — yes, A.J. Terrell's little brother. Family discount in Atlanta. And the Lions grabbed Michigan's Derrick Moore at forty-four, because of course Detroit drafts a Michigan defensive end. That's basically a civic obligation. But the biggest Day Two bomb? The Eagles traded for Jonathan Greenard from the Vikings and immediately gave him a four-year, hundred-million-dollar extension with fifty million guaranteed. Howie Roseman needed a pass rusher after losing Jaelan Phillips in free agency, and he went and got one of the best in the league. Greenard had twelve sacks, four forced fumbles, and eighteen tackles for loss in his Pro Bowl season. Philly's defense was already nasty. Now it's nastier. Oh, and the Vrabel situation is still lingering. Patriots coach Mike Vrabel said he's "taking accountability for actions that have created a distraction" without actually addressing the photos of him with reporter Dianna Russini at an Arizona resort. Real specific, Mike. That story isn't going away. Here's the Hangover Take. I wanna talk about Stephon Castle for a second. Not just last night — but what last night means. This kid is a second-year guard, and he just dropped thirty-three in a playoff road win with the best player on his team sitting out. That's not a fluke performance. That's a guy announcing himself. San Antonio built this whole thing around Wembanyama, and rightfully — I mean, obviously. He's a generational talent. But Castle might be the reason this team is genuinely dangerous for years. You need a number two who can carry games when your star is out. Castle just did that on the road in a playoff game at twenty years old. Keep your eye on that kid. He's not a sidekick. He might be a co-star. That's your hangover. Go hydrate. I'll see you tomorrow.
