- Lucas: Hey Luna, welcome back to Learn Amharic with Fexingo. Episode 160 — can you believe it? Luna: I know, it's wild. And my brain is still full of all that weather vocabulary from last time. Cloudy, foggy... I've been walking around saying ዛሬ ደመናማ ነው every morning. Lucas: That's awesome. And speaking of walking — today's topic is all about feet and shoes. Two super practical words. Luna: Oh, I like that. My feet are definitely feeling it after all that practice walking and talking. Lucas: Right. So the word for 'foot' is እግር. Let's say it together — እግር. Luna: እግር. Lucas: Good. And for 'shoe' it's ጫማ. Repeat after me — ጫማ. Luna: ጫማ. Lucas: Perfect. Now, if you want to say 'my foot', you add the possessive suffix. So 'foot' is እግር, and 'my foot' is እግሬ. Luna: እግሬ. That sounds like a small change. Lucas: Exactly. And 'my shoe' becomes ጫማዬ. Try it. Luna: ጫማዬ. Okay, I can do that. Lucas: Great. Now a useful phrase: 'My foot hurts.' That's እግሬ ይታመማል. You might remember ይታመማል from when we talked about body parts before — it means 'hurts'. Luna: እግሬ ይታመማል. That's a mouthful. Let me try. እግሬ ይታመማል. Lucas: You got it. And if you bought new shoes, you could say 'I bought new shoes.' That's አዲስ ጫማ ገዛሁ. Luna: አዲስ ጫማ ገዛሁ. That sounds like something I'd actually say. I love new shoes. Lucas: Me too. So let's practice all of these. I'll say the English, you say the Amharic. Ready? Luna: Ready. Lucas: Foot. Luna: እግር. Lucas: Shoe. Luna: ጫማ. Lucas: My foot. Luna: እግሬ. Lucas: My shoe. Luna: ጫማዬ. Lucas: My foot hurts. Luna: እግሬ ይታመማል. Lucas: I bought new shoes. Luna: አዲስ ጫማ ገዛሁ. Lucas: Nice. You're really getting these. And you know, it's because we practice a lot — and also because listeners like you make this show possible. Luna: Yeah, a small but awesome group of people support us through buy me a coffee dot com slash fexingo, and that literally keeps the lights on and lets us keep making episodes like this. Lucas: Exactly. No ads, just learning. So thank you to everyone who chips in. Now, back to our feet. Let's imagine you're walking in Addis and your feet start hurting. What do you say? Luna: እግሬ ይታመማል. And then I'd probably look for a place to sit down. Lucas: Good idea. And if you see a shoe store, you might say አዲስ ጫማ ልግዛ. Luna: Wait, what's that? ልግዛ? Lucas: That's 'I want to buy'. So አዲስ ጫማ ልግዛ means 'I want to buy new shoes.' It's a useful pattern. But let's not get ahead of ourselves — we'll cover that another time. Luna: Okay, but I already want to use it. አዲስ ጫማ ልግዛ. That's fun to say. Lucas: It is. Alright, let's do one more round of our phrases. I'll say the Amharic, you repeat. Luna: Sounds good. Lucas: እግር. Luna: እግር. Lucas: ጫማ. Luna: ጫማ. Lucas: እግሬ. Luna: እግሬ. Lucas: ጫማዬ. Luna: ጫማዬ. Lucas: እግሬ ይታመማል. Luna: እግሬ ይታመማል. Lucas: አዲስ ጫማ ገዛሁ. Luna: አዲስ ጫማ ገዛሁ. I love that one. Lucas: Perfect. So next time your feet are tired or you get new shoes, you'll know exactly what to say in Amharic. Luna: And maybe I'll even go buy some new shoes and practice. Thanks, Lucas. Lucas: Thank you, Luna. And thank you to all our listeners. Keep practicing these phrases, and we'll see you next time on Learn Amharic with Fexingo.
