- 0:14Speaker 2: This is the best of Stugatz and Company live on
- 0:17Speaker 2: Fox Sports Radio.
- 0:20Speaker 1: We have a loaded show today and Herm Edwards going
- 0:23Speaker 1: to join us. Mikey, excited for that? Little Herm Edwards
- 0:26Speaker 1: in our lives.
- 0:27Speaker 3: Who doesn't love Herm Edwards?
- 0:29Speaker 1: Nobody. The city of Philadelphia, the city of Kansas City,
- 0:32Speaker 1: and perhaps the city of New York.
- 0:34Speaker 3: No, we still love him.
- 0:35Speaker 4: You're right. We still love him.
- 0:37Speaker 1: I take it back. I'm sorry.
- 0:39Speaker 5: You know who New York doesn't love, though?
- 0:40Speaker 2: Who?
- 0:41Speaker 5: The New York Yankees.
- 0:41Speaker 1: Okay, go ahead. I mean, he is unhinged today.
- 0:44Speaker 5: And then, Mikey, if it couldn't go from bad to
- 0:49Speaker 5: worse after the Yankees get humiliated getting swept by the
- 0:53Speaker 5: Tampa Bay Rays.
- 0:54Speaker 1: Good team.
- 0:55Speaker 5: I wake up to this from Jimmy Trena. Buster Olney
- 0:58Speaker 5: just said on ESPN that he expects the Yankees to
- 1:01Speaker 5: resign Brian Cashman this off season and that Cashman will
- 1:05Speaker 5: then bring back Aaron Boone. Enjoy your day, Yankee fans. Stu,
- 1:09Speaker 5: this is Groundhog Day. Like, I feel like we are
- 1:12Speaker 5: living the same day over and over. And Mikey, it
- 1:16Speaker 5: was the Blue Jays last year. It was the Rays
- 1:19Speaker 5: this year.
- 1:19Speaker 1: Set your clocks.
- 1:20Speaker 5: And next year, it's probably going to be the Baltimore
- 1:22Speaker 5: Orioles turn to embarrass us on a national stage.
- 1:25Speaker 1: Right. Jimmy T. That's a great report. But I feel
- 1:28Speaker 1: like anyone could have reported that with 100 percent certainty
- 1:32Speaker 1: without any knowledge, without any inside information, without a source.
- 1:35Speaker 1: They could have said that Brian Cashman will return next
- 1:38Speaker 1: season as the Yankees GM. Do you guys agree with that?
- 1:41Speaker 4: Yes.
- 1:42Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:42Speaker 6: And it makes it even worse that we might be
- 1:44Speaker 6: headed towards some sort of work stoppage, whether it be
- 1:47Speaker 6: a lockout, whether it's. into the season or not because
- 1:51Speaker 6: no team is going to want to change things up
- 1:53Speaker 6: too much with the uncertainty of how it is which
- 1:56Speaker 6: just means the Yankees are not only going to resign
- 1:58Speaker 6: Cashman they're not only going to bring back Boone they're
- 2:01Speaker 6: probably going to resign either Jazz or Trent Grisham I'm
- 2:04Speaker 6: sure they'll bring back Bednar even though I think they
- 2:06Speaker 6: should We're just setting ourselves up for another year of failure.
- 2:12Speaker 5: My least favorite thing in this whole narrative, besides the
- 2:15Speaker 5: fact that my team stinks and my team is the
- 2:17Speaker 5: joke of baseball today.
- 2:20Speaker 3: Is when people say, if you.
- 2:22Speaker 5: Fire Brian Cashman or if you fire Aaron Boone, somebody's
- 2:25Speaker 5: going to hire them.
- 2:27Speaker 2: Good.
- 2:28Speaker 1: Please. Please.
- 2:29Speaker 3: Red Sox.
- 2:30Speaker 4: Yes.
- 2:30Speaker 1: Hopefully Boston.
- 2:33Speaker 3: I'm begging you. Please.
- 2:35Speaker 1: Toronto.
- 2:36Speaker 3: Please.
- 2:37Speaker 4: Yes.
- 2:37Speaker 3: I'm begging you.
- 2:38Speaker 6: The problem is that because I maintain Brian Cashman has
- 2:42Speaker 6: done nothing with all those resources that you couldn't have
- 2:46Speaker 6: picked out anybody on the street wearing a Yankee hat
- 2:49Speaker 6: and they wouldn't have done the same thing except except better.
- 2:53Speaker 1: Except Boston's not dumb enough to hire Brian Cashman. That's
- 2:55Speaker 1: the problem. Sorry, guys. I can't even get a word in.
- 3:01Speaker 1: I mean, you guys are so unhinged.
- 3:04Speaker 3: And here's the other thing about.
- 3:08Speaker 4: It.
- 3:08Speaker 1: Don't stop now. I mean, listen, you made it to
- 3:14Speaker 1: the playoffs. You say they failed. It was an F.
- 3:17Speaker 1: I mean, I understand the Yankees win the World Series
- 3:19Speaker 1: every single year. It's not a reality. It's not going
- 3:21Speaker 1: to happen. You guys know that by now. Baseball is
- 3:23Speaker 1: such a random sport. I understand you hold your team
- 3:27Speaker 1: to a higher standard. But you guys are sitting here
- 3:29Speaker 1: saying you failed. That's not a failure, making it to
- 3:32Speaker 1: the divisional round. No, a failure is the New York Mets.
- 3:36Speaker 1: That's a failure, guys.
- 3:38Speaker 5: Stu, you say baseball is random. Yet me and Mikey
- 3:41Speaker 5: told you exactly how the season would end in April.
- 3:43Speaker 1: Now that's fair.
- 3:45Speaker 5: You say baseball is random. We have seen the Yankees
- 3:47Speaker 5: get eliminated the same way now for, what, four of
- 3:50Speaker 5: the past five years? Where in the biggest moments, they
- 3:54Speaker 5: look like a team that just forgets how to play baseball.
- 3:56Speaker 5: And all us Yankee fans are saying is like, hey,
- 3:59Speaker 5: let's address the issue. And the Yankees at the end
- 4:01Speaker 5: spit in our face and look at us and say...
- 4:04Speaker 5: You guys don't know what you're talking about. You guys
- 4:06Speaker 5: are just fans. Just keep giving us your money. You
- 4:09Speaker 5: guys don't know any better. We're the ones in charge
- 4:12Speaker 5: of this. We won titles in the 90s.
- 4:15Speaker 3: Trust us.
- 4:15Speaker 5: And it's like, shut up.
- 4:18Speaker 6: This is the longest World Series drought in New York
- 4:23Speaker 6: Yankees history.
- 4:24Speaker 4: Right. Like.
- 4:25Speaker 5: Like since the first one, since the first one.
- 4:28Speaker 3: Okay.
- 4:29Speaker 6: But like, since they won one, this is, this is
- 4:31Speaker 6: the longest world series drought in their history.
- 4:35Speaker 3: That is mind blowing. And you go back and you
- 4:38Speaker 3: look at some of those teams. I beg anybody.
- 4:41Speaker 6: Go look at the 2006 Yankees and tell me you've
- 4:45Speaker 6: ever seen a better lineup.
- 4:47Speaker 3: Top to bottom Robinson Cano hit.
- 4:50Speaker 1: Ninth, right?
- 4:51Speaker 4: Hmm.
- 4:52Speaker 1: I mean, I could sit here all day and watch
- 4:54Speaker 1: the two of you just go back and forth. One's
- 4:56Speaker 1: angrier than the other.
- 4:57Speaker 5: Bobby Abreu.
- 4:58Speaker 1: Bobby Abreu.
- 5:01Speaker 5: Johnny Damon. What was Andy Phillips doing on this 2016?
- 5:09Speaker 2: Be sure to catch live editions of Stu Godson Company
- 5:13Speaker 2: live weekdays at 3 p.m.
- 5:15Speaker 3: Eastern, 12 p.m. Pacific.
- 5:19Speaker 1: Mikey A. I miss this man so much from our
- 5:22Speaker 1: days at ESPN. I really do. Herm Edwards, nice enough
- 5:26Speaker 1: to join us here. He is fantastic. Herm, I have
- 5:28Speaker 1: to start here because you're beloved at ESPN and I've
- 5:32Speaker 1: talked to you so many times over the years and
- 5:33Speaker 1: you talk about what time you wake up and your
- 5:35Speaker 1: workout routine. So I am wondering what time did Herm
- 5:38Speaker 1: Edwards wake up this morning and what was the workout like?
- 5:42Speaker 4: Yeah, I woke up at 4. I started at 4.30.
- 5:46Speaker 4: It never changes. And, you know, I do some aerobics.
- 5:49Speaker 4: I try to do aerobics for about an hour. I
- 5:52Speaker 4: can't run anymore, obviously. I got two hip replacements, and
- 5:56Speaker 4: I've got a new knee. And then I'm 72 years old,
- 5:59Speaker 4: so I don't even try to run anymore. I walk,
- 6:01Speaker 4: but I make sure I walk up an incline for
- 6:04Speaker 4: about an hour. And then depending on if I do
- 6:06Speaker 4: some lower upper body, we're fortunate we have a gym
- 6:09Speaker 4: at the home, so that always helps as well.
- 6:11Speaker 1: Yeah, but you're a young 72, Herm, right?
- 6:13Speaker 4: I mean, yes. I try to be.
- 6:17Speaker 3: Parts of them.
- 6:18Speaker 4: Parts of them, you're right. That is a good quote.
- 6:22Speaker 4: Parts of me is very young.
- 6:25Speaker 1: It seems like the upper torso. Yeah. Yes. Herm, so
- 6:30Speaker 1: I'm wondering here, the referee stuff is very interesting to me.
- 6:35Speaker 1: The referees being suspended now, two referees for at least
- 6:39Speaker 1: a game here. What did you make of that entire situation?
- 6:42Speaker 4: Well, it's unfortunate. I've always told folks that think about
- 6:47Speaker 4: you if you're an official. In any sport you officiate,
- 6:50Speaker 4: you're needed, obviously, but you never have a home game.
- 6:55Speaker 4: Wherever you go, it's never.
- 6:56Speaker 2: A home game.
- 6:57Speaker 4: The crowd is always mad at you for what you
- 7:00Speaker 4: call and what you don't call. They got a tough job,
- 7:03Speaker 4: but I thought the league... did a good job and
- 7:06Speaker 4: sent a message knowing that, you know, we always say
- 7:10Speaker 4: the National Football League is the standard of how we play,
- 7:13Speaker 4: how we coach, and how we do things is very important.
- 7:16Speaker 4: And it's a trickle-down effect. You know, we are the
- 7:19Speaker 4: standard of football when it comes to football, regardless of
- 7:22Speaker 4: what level you play football at. And so even officials,
- 7:26Speaker 4: they're a part of it. And when things like that happen,
- 7:29Speaker 4: we do know this. If a player was to do that,
- 7:32Speaker 4: we know what would happen to them, right? They'd be suspended.
- 7:36Speaker 1: Know what?
- 7:36Speaker 4: They turned around and said, look, you're no different than
- 7:39Speaker 4: the player. You work for the National Football League. There's
- 7:41Speaker 4: a certain standard you have to keep, and we're going
- 7:44Speaker 4: to suspend you. I think going forward, you'll never have
- 7:46Speaker 4: to worry about official.
- 7:49Speaker 1: Again. We've seen the last of that, is what you're saying.
- 7:52Speaker 1: The NFL, they did their job by eliminating that because, hey,
- 7:56Speaker 1: if you do it, you're going to get suspended again.
- 7:58Speaker 4: Correct. They made a statement, and I get it. Like
- 8:02Speaker 4: I said, those officials... They got a job, man. They do. And,
- 8:06Speaker 4: you know, I think it's the way you handle officials, too.
- 8:08Speaker 4: I mean, I know when I became a head coach,
- 8:11Speaker 4: I purposely, you know, knew guys' names and I would,
- 8:13Speaker 4: you know, talk to them in the pregame and, you know,
- 8:16Speaker 4: visit with them a little while. And, you know, when
- 8:18Speaker 4: you're a team that you're not penalized a lot, they
- 8:22Speaker 4: know that. we were always one of the least penalized
- 8:25Speaker 4: teams in pro football. And so they know that, you know,
- 8:28Speaker 4: you're coaching your team in a way that we're trying
- 8:29Speaker 4: to play it right. And they appreciate that. So it
- 8:33Speaker 4: works both ways.
- 8:36Speaker 6: Coach, your beloved Philadelphia Eagles are sitting at two and two.
- 8:41Speaker 3: But things just don't look right with this team. What
- 8:45Speaker 3: do you think is wrong with them?
- 8:47Speaker 4: Well, look, look, first of all, I'm going to give
- 8:49Speaker 4: kudos to the quarterbacks. Because in six years, this guy's
- 8:53Speaker 4: had five different offensive coordinators.
- 8:55Speaker 1: Thank you, Herm.
- 8:56Speaker 4: So when people ask me that question, I always say, well,
- 8:58Speaker 4: what is this supposed to look like? It's like when
- 9:01Speaker 4: you get a new car. It's got that new car smell,
- 9:04Speaker 4: but until you start driving it, until you put some
- 9:06Speaker 4: miles on it, you're really not quite for sure what
- 9:09Speaker 4: to do with it, right? That's their offense. It's clunky.
- 9:13Speaker 4: The coach is trying to call plays. He's trying to
- 9:15Speaker 4: get people involved. Look, and I said it last week.
- 9:19Speaker 4: I said, let me get this right. I said, Saquon
- 9:21Speaker 4: Barkley doesn't have a touchdown. In four weeks, he doesn't
- 9:26Speaker 4: have a touchdown. Now he's hurt. I said, how can
- 9:28Speaker 4: that be that he doesn't have a touchdown? Something's wrong
- 9:32Speaker 4: with that pitcher. So I just think they're a team
- 9:35Speaker 4: that's trying to find their way on offense. At the
- 9:37Speaker 4: end of the day, they're probably going to win the
- 9:40Speaker 4: division again because we know the Cowboys. They have a
- 9:43Speaker 4: Super Bowl offense. They ain't fixed that defense yet. It's
- 9:46Speaker 4: still not fixed. Look, here's what the deal is with
- 9:50Speaker 4: the Cowboys. They score 120 points. They can score 32
- 9:52Speaker 4: points or 30 points every week. That ain't a problem.
- 9:59Speaker 4: But they've given up 112. That's just who they are.
- 10:03Speaker 4: And they can't help it. They've got to outscore you.
- 10:05Speaker 4: And hopefully in the fourth quarter they have the ball
- 10:07Speaker 4: to run the game out.
- 10:09Speaker 1: Herm, help me untangle this because Kenneth Walker, you can
- 10:11Speaker 1: make an argument, he's the MVP of the NFL thus far,
- 10:14Speaker 1: but Seattle without him is 3-1. And so I don't
- 10:17Speaker 1: know what to do with just how valuable Kenneth Walker
- 10:20Speaker 1: is or has been for the Kansas City Chiefs. What
- 10:22Speaker 1: do you make of that?
- 10:23Speaker 4: Well, he's very valuable and really think about it. And
- 10:26Speaker 4: I said it when they got him on the offseason.
- 10:29Speaker 4: I said, it's coming back home now for Andy Reid.
- 10:32Speaker 4: You know, Andy Reid is an all-offensive line coach. Offensive
- 10:36Speaker 4: coordinator is the enemy. who played running back. And they're
- 10:40Speaker 4: looking at Patrick Mahomes and they're going, look, we've won
- 10:42Speaker 4: way too much on this guy's plate. He's got to
- 10:44Speaker 4: be Houdini every week. We got to go back to
- 10:47Speaker 4: our roots of running the football and revolve our passing
- 10:50Speaker 4: game around the run, the play action, the boots, and
- 10:53Speaker 4: things we want to do, and a runner will help that.
- 10:56Speaker 4: When I got Walker, and you're right, he could be
- 10:57Speaker 4: the MVP right now. That whole offense looks different now, right?
- 11:01Speaker 4: It's just different. Yes. Because you take the pressure off
- 11:04Speaker 4: Patrick trying to do everything. Right. They got a runner now.
- 11:07Speaker 4: I mean, when you're in second and four on offense,
- 11:10Speaker 4: that's the worst down you can be in on defense.
- 11:13Speaker 4: There's no call for that. You're already looking at your
- 11:15Speaker 4: dollar X on defense going, you know what? they're going
- 11:19Speaker 4: to convert the first down. They got two plays to
- 11:23Speaker 4: make four yards. So you're already on the next series
- 11:25Speaker 4: of when it's going to be first and 10 again. Yep.
- 11:28Speaker 1: Herm, if Michael Penix, this is so fascinating to me
- 11:31Speaker 1: because the Falcons without Penix, without a competent quarterback, put
- 11:35Speaker 1: up 16 points through two weeks. And then Penix comes back,
- 11:39Speaker 1: and they have 80 points over the last two weeks
- 11:42Speaker 1: for the best offense in football. Are you going to
- 11:45Speaker 1: be surprised? Because that team is so talented, especially on offense.
- 11:49Speaker 1: Are you going to be surprised at the Falcons if
- 11:50Speaker 1: Penix continues to play like this, Herm, if they make
- 11:53Speaker 1: a deep run into the playoffs?
- 11:56Speaker 4: Well, first of all, they got a chance to win
- 11:59Speaker 4: a division. Yes. Because as we know, last year— Right.
- 12:03Speaker 4: The winner was 8-9. It was 3-2, so 8-9 in
- 12:05Speaker 4: the division. And I said it on TV last week.
- 12:09Speaker 4: I said, if this division at this rate, if they
- 12:11Speaker 4: keep doing this, we're going to send them to the SEC.
- 12:15Speaker 4: Just send them to the SEC. Just let them go
- 12:18Speaker 4: play in the SEC. But you're right. The Atlanta Falcons.
- 12:22Speaker 4: That was impressive.
- 12:23Speaker 1: Yes.
- 12:24Speaker 4: That offense, it looked like, oh, this is what it
- 12:27Speaker 4: looks like when the quarterback can get the ball, the
- 12:29Speaker 4: B John, he can get the ball, obviously, you know,
- 12:34Speaker 4: to the wide outs and, and, you know, and, and,
- 12:36Speaker 4: and to the tight end, you know, when Drake London and, and,
- 12:40Speaker 4: you know, they don't, they don't throw a tight end enough.
- 12:42Speaker 4: In my opinion, I guess they mad at him all
- 12:44Speaker 4: the time, but They got London and they got Vijon Robinson,
- 12:48Speaker 4: who's one of the best players in the national football league.
- 12:51Speaker 4: And I'm like looking at this going, man, this offense
- 12:53Speaker 4: is rolling right now.
- 12:56Speaker 3: Coach, the Raiders have been fascinating.
- 12:59Speaker 6: And I would almost argue that they proved they were
- 13:02Speaker 6: for real in the loss to the Chiefs, more so
- 13:04Speaker 6: than the three wins beforehand, because they were right there
- 13:07Speaker 6: with them and a team that has dominated them.
- 13:12Speaker 3: How are they doing this? And is it sustainable?
- 13:16Speaker 4: Well, as long as, and, you know, here's my guy now,
- 13:19Speaker 4: Kirk Cousins. You know, he's famous for, you like that?
- 13:23Speaker 4: He's also famous for, we don't like that. And right now,
- 13:26Speaker 4: we like that. We like what he's doing. And this
- 13:28Speaker 4: offense is running. They've got a good runner. Two fabulous
- 13:31Speaker 4: tight ends. They really do. They've got some skilled players
- 13:36Speaker 4: on offense. I mean, you know, the Raiders have scored
- 13:37Speaker 4: 115 points. The Chiefs only scored three more points than
- 13:41Speaker 4: the Raiders on offense. The Chiefs have scored 118. They've
- 13:44Speaker 4: scored 115. So they can score the ball. They've got
- 13:47Speaker 4: a veteran quarterback and cousins. They're fun to watch. I've
- 13:51Speaker 4: said this, and I mean it. I'm not kidding. The
- 13:55Speaker 4: Raiders need to be relevant. It makes the league better
- 13:58Speaker 4: when the Raiders are relevant, right? You know, like in life,
- 14:01Speaker 4: there's always a bully or a villain. The Raiders have
- 14:05Speaker 4: always been that team in the NFL. You know, they
- 14:07Speaker 4: played with the patch on their eyes. It's a shame
- 14:08Speaker 4: they had to move from Oakland. I thought when they
- 14:10Speaker 4: moved from Oakland, they kind of messed up the mojo
- 14:12Speaker 4: a little bit. But for them to be relevant, it's
- 14:16Speaker 4: fun to watch because it's the Raiders, right? It's just
- 14:18Speaker 4: the Raiders. It's them guys, man. And so hopefully they
- 14:21Speaker 4: can continue to play this way and find themselves in
- 14:24Speaker 4: the playoffs. I don't think they overtake the Chiefs. I
- 14:26Speaker 4: just think the Chiefs are just going at a rate
- 14:29Speaker 4: right now. It's going to be very difficult to unseed
- 14:31Speaker 4: them as a division winner.
- 14:33Speaker 1: Herm, we'll get you out of here on this note.
- 14:35Speaker 1: You were a college football coach at Arizona State. You,
- 14:39Speaker 1: of course, spent a lot of time. out in California,
- 14:43Speaker 1: played college ball in California. And we were having this
- 14:46Speaker 1: discussion last week. I am wondering, is USC, if Lincoln
- 14:50Speaker 1: Riley is let go by USC, is that still a
- 14:54Speaker 1: desirable job? And would Lincoln Riley still be a coach
- 14:58Speaker 1: that upper-tier programs would want to hire?
- 15:01Speaker 4: Well, you know, I think just the three letters say
- 15:06Speaker 4: it all. Yes.
- 15:08Speaker 1: Right?
- 15:08Speaker 4: Yeah. I mean, when you say USC... I don't care
- 15:11Speaker 4: where you're at. You go, oh, okay. And there's a
- 15:14Speaker 4: standard that people believe they have to play at. And
- 15:17Speaker 4: it's almost unfair to them. But you know what? They
- 15:19Speaker 4: brought that on themselves. And I'm going back 30 years
- 15:22Speaker 4: ago when they were so dominant and they were like
- 15:25Speaker 4: the team. They were the team on the West Coast.
- 15:27Speaker 4: It was USC. It wasn't Oregon. It wasn't Washington. It
- 15:30Speaker 4: wasn't any of that. It was USC. They represented the
- 15:34Speaker 4: West Coast in football, along with UCLA had a run, too.
- 15:37Speaker 4: But it was really USC was the dominant force, right?
- 15:40Speaker 4: And so that's never going to go away. And I
- 15:43Speaker 4: think Coach understands that when you go there. But the
- 15:46Speaker 4: problem he has now is, I hate to say this, boys.
- 15:51Speaker 4: You can buy yourself a football team. Yep. Right?
- 15:54Speaker 3: Yes.
- 15:55Speaker 4: That's what college football is about.
- 15:56Speaker 1: Anywhere.
- 15:57Speaker 4: And here's the problem with it. Here's the problem with it.
- 15:59Speaker 4: And I've said this. All of a sudden, those big
- 16:02Speaker 4: time donors, they become GMs. for the school that they're
- 16:08Speaker 4: donating the money to to get the players. That's right.
- 16:10Speaker 4: And all of a sudden, they want a voice. They
- 16:12Speaker 4: want a voice. They're saying, hey, we're donating all this
- 16:15Speaker 4: money so we can get all these players. Guess what?
- 16:17Speaker 4: I don't like the coach. Or, you know, my son's
- 16:21Speaker 4: a friend that plays high school football. We need to
- 16:23Speaker 4: recruit him, too. This is a mess, guys. It is.
- 16:28Speaker 1: No, it's a total mess. You're right. If you have
- 16:32Speaker 1: one alum, Mark Cuban, who wants your program to be good,
- 16:35Speaker 1: your program's going to be good, Herm. You're right.
- 16:37Speaker 4: And you know, the thing about the NFL, they figured
- 16:39Speaker 4: it out because Jerry would have bought everybody.
- 16:41Speaker 3: They put a salary cap on it.
- 16:43Speaker 4: The NFL has a salary cap. The college has.
- 16:46Speaker 1: No salary cap. Mikey, put it on the poll. If
- 16:50Speaker 1: there was no salary cap, would Jerry Jones buy everyone? Yes,
- 16:55Speaker 1: it's funny. Mikey, you have a question here?
- 16:58Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 16:58Speaker 6: So coach, whether we're talking about USC, you're talking to
- 17:01Speaker 6: two long suffering jet fans here. And I want to
- 17:04Speaker 6: take the conversation a little more general. How do you
- 17:08Speaker 6: know when it's time to move on for a coach?
- 17:11Speaker 6: And we're not rooting for any coaches to be fired
- 17:13Speaker 6: or anything, but at some point you just kind of
- 17:16Speaker 6: know this just isn't working out.
- 17:19Speaker 3: How do you know that?
- 17:21Speaker 4: Well, I think by how the players play. When they
- 17:26Speaker 4: stop competing, then you got a problem. When you lose
- 17:29Speaker 4: your team, you can see it. I'm pulling for Aaron Glenn.
- 17:36Speaker 4: Aaron Glenn played for me when I was the head
- 17:38Speaker 4: coach of the Jets. And I think these guys are
- 17:40Speaker 4: playing hard for him. They respect him. You know, look,
- 17:43Speaker 4: they've lost three in a row. They won a game finally. Defensively,
- 17:47Speaker 4: they're hanging in there, right? They're just in a division
- 17:50Speaker 4: where that one guy, and he lost last week. And
- 17:53Speaker 4: I say it every week. That one guy that plays
- 17:56Speaker 4: in Buffalo, he's the best player in the league, guys. Yes.
- 17:59Speaker 4: It ain't close. He's the best player in the league.
- 18:01Speaker 4: I say it every week when I'm on television. Right.
- 18:03Speaker 4: If he's not playing, the Buffalo Bills can win eight
- 18:05Speaker 4: games every year. That's about it.
- 18:06Speaker 2: Mm-hmm.
- 18:07Speaker 4: They're an eight-win football team without that quarterback.
- 18:09Speaker 1: I'd be surprised if they won eight games without him,
- 18:11Speaker 1: to be honest.
- 18:14Speaker 4: He's just fun to watch.
- 18:15Speaker 3: Yes.
- 18:16Speaker 4: You know, if you've got a young kid growing up
- 18:18Speaker 4: and you say, hey, you want to learn how to
- 18:19Speaker 4: play football, you need to watch this guy, number 17,
- 18:21Speaker 4: that plays for the Buffalo Bills. Don't worry about it
- 18:24Speaker 4: because he plays quarterback. Just watch how he competes.
- 18:26Speaker 2: Yes.
- 18:27Speaker 1: Right?
- 18:27Speaker 4: Yep. I mean, that's what you want. You want a guy,
- 18:30Speaker 4: you want to be like that guy. If you're going
- 18:32Speaker 4: to play, he's fun to watch. Obviously the jets are
- 18:36Speaker 4: in a, in a division where I don't, they're not
- 18:37Speaker 4: going to win the division. It's between new England and Buffalo,
- 18:39Speaker 4: obviously Miami rebuilding. But I think, and I said it
- 18:43Speaker 4: this year, if the jets can win seven or eight games,
- 18:45Speaker 4: they're heading in the right direction.
- 18:46Speaker 1: Herm, we appreciate this. It's great to hear your voice.
- 18:50Speaker 1: We hope to do it again soon. Thank you for
- 18:52Speaker 1: the time. And we miss you, Herm. We miss you
- 18:53Speaker 1: a lot. So come around here more often, okay?
- 18:55Speaker 4: I appreciate it. Anytime you guys need me, man. I
- 18:57Speaker 4: appreciate you.
- 18:58Speaker 2: Fox Sports Radio has the best sports talk lineup in
- 19:00Speaker 2: the nation. Catch all of our shows at foxsportsradio.com. And
- 19:05Speaker 2: within the iHeartRadio app, search FSR to listen live.
- 19:11Speaker 1: Our thanks to Herm Edwards for joining us there. It
- 19:13Speaker 1: was nice to hear his voice, Mikey. That was nice.
- 19:15Speaker 1: I enjoyed that very much.
- 19:16Speaker 3: I love that man.
- 19:17Speaker 1: I know.
- 19:17Speaker 3: I love that man. I wish he was better at coaching.
- 19:22Speaker 1: Right. You want him to be. We were so hopeful
- 19:25Speaker 1: that he would be the Jets head coach forever because
- 19:27Speaker 1: we love Herm Edwards. You're right.
- 19:30Speaker 4: Yes.
- 19:30Speaker 1: Unfortunately, it didn't go that well. Anyway, you interested in
- 19:33Speaker 1: tonight's game? Before we get to if the season ended today,
- 19:36Speaker 1: because we haven't talked a lot. of NFL football today
- 19:39Speaker 1: because baseball has dominated our show and your guys' hatred
- 19:44Speaker 1: for the New York Yankees, specifically Brian Cashman, has dominated
- 19:48Speaker 1: the show. Are you into Bucs? tonight?
- 19:52Speaker 3: Not even a little bit.
- 19:53Speaker 6: I mean, I'm honestly considering going to sleep early because
- 19:57Speaker 6: I've spent so many late nights watching baseball and I
- 20:00Speaker 6: just need to catch up. I'm actually considering missing this
- 20:03Speaker 6: game just because if you told me Baker was.
- 20:06Speaker 3: Playing maybe, but.
- 20:07Speaker 6: The only thing that's going to make this game relatively
- 20:10Speaker 6: competitive is the fact that it's Thursday and anything can happen.
- 20:13Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 20:14Speaker 1: What'd you make of, uh, Bomani Jones earlier saying that,
- 20:16Speaker 1: you know, if God forbid the bucks lose, Todd Bowles
- 20:19Speaker 1: could be fired.
- 20:21Speaker 3: I don't believe it.
- 20:22Speaker 6: I think it's really hard to fire a co and I,
- 20:24Speaker 6: I understand that you think he's untouchable, but I think
- 20:26Speaker 6: it's really hard to fire a coach when you're starting
- 20:29Speaker 6: an undrafted rookie.
- 20:31Speaker 3: Um, Like, that can't be the game you fire him.
- 20:35Speaker 1: Well, they weren't good with Baker, I mean, to be fair.
- 20:37Speaker 3: They weren't good, but.
- 20:39Speaker 6: You got to give Baker a shot, and it doesn't
- 20:41Speaker 6: help you to fire him now.
- 20:43Speaker 3: It doesn't help you.
- 20:44Speaker 1: Thanks to all the guests who joined us today. Fun show,
- 20:46Speaker 1: busy show. Let's get to if the season ended today
- 20:50Speaker 1: to finish off the show.
- 20:52Speaker 3: Ooh, a little NFL music.
- 20:53Speaker 4: Yeah. Yeah.
- 20:54Speaker 1: What week are we in? What week?
- 20:57Speaker 3: This is week five kicks off tonight.
- 20:59Speaker 1: Yes, but we are approaching the time of the season
- 21:01Speaker 1: where you forget what week it is, right? Like, no doubt. Yes.
- 21:04Speaker 3: I never forget because I count them down.
- 21:07Speaker 4: I know.
- 21:07Speaker 1: Sorry.
- 21:09Speaker 6: If the season ended today in the AFC, surprise, surprise,
- 21:13Speaker 6: the Kansas City Chiefs have the one seed.
- 21:15Speaker 3: They have the bye.
- 21:17Speaker 1: No surprise. Well, surprise us all.
- 21:18Speaker 3: Your first get matchup.
- 21:20Speaker 1: No surprise.
- 21:21Speaker 6: The New England Patriots are on the road. at the
- 21:25Speaker 6: Jacksonville Jaguars.
- 21:26Speaker 4: Wow.
- 21:28Speaker 6: We just saw this game. We just saw this game,
- 21:31Speaker 6: and I think it'd be a repeat. Give me Jacksonville.
- 21:34Speaker 1: Yeah, but the Patriots, I mean, Drake, you weren't encouraged
- 21:37Speaker 1: at all by Drake May against Buffalo and that Patriot
- 21:39Speaker 1: team against Buffalo last week?
- 21:41Speaker 6: No, I think Buffalo has a suspect defense, and I
- 21:45Speaker 6: think they're going to just ask Josh Allen to.
- 21:46Speaker 1: Do it all. Jacksonville has a very good defense. Trevor Lawrence, man,
- 21:51Speaker 1: this is painful to say, but might be good. By
- 21:56Speaker 1: the way, the return of Tony Buscelli in two weeks, Mikey.
- 21:58Speaker 1: I thought you'd be excited about that.
- 22:00Speaker 3: I'm excited. I don't even need to ask him about Jags.
- 22:02Speaker 1: I would take the Jags in that game, too.
- 22:03Speaker 4: Go ahead.
- 22:05Speaker 3: The Raiders head to Buffalo.
- 22:07Speaker 1: Wow, they made the playoffs. Wow, the Raiders are for real.
- 22:12Speaker 3: They're not even the last seed. Yeah.
- 22:16Speaker 1: Where are the Raiders going?
- 22:18Speaker 3: They are going to Buffalo.
- 22:20Speaker 4: Wow.
- 22:21Speaker 1: Kirk Cousins, we think. Josh Allen, Buffalo. I think the
- 22:27Speaker 1: Raiders are just happy to make it to the playoffs.
- 22:30Speaker 1: The Bills, of course, are not happy just making it
- 22:32Speaker 1: to the playoffs. They have loftier aspirations. I think Buffalo
- 22:35Speaker 1: wins that game fairly easily.
- 22:36Speaker 3: I agree.
- 22:39Speaker 6: But barring injury, Kirk Cousins will be the quarterback for
- 22:42Speaker 6: that team at that point.
- 22:44Speaker 3: He's earned it.
- 22:45Speaker 1: I would agree. Well, yes, if he has taken his
- 22:46Speaker 1: team to the playoffs, it'd be an odd time to
- 22:48Speaker 1: bench him. And if they are indeed headed towards the playoffs,
- 22:52Speaker 1: he's never being benched. So Mendoza will wait another year.
- 22:55Speaker 3: And how about this? Last game in the AFC and
- 22:58Speaker 3: AFC North.
- 22:59Speaker 6: Matchup between the Baltimore Ravens traveling to the Cleveland Browns.
- 23:04Speaker 1: Oh, wow. That is rich. I mean, what the storylines
- 23:11Speaker 1: are amazing in that game. I actually want that game
- 23:14Speaker 1: to happen. I do. I think the Ravens blow him out.
- 23:18Speaker 6: In the NFC, the San Francisco 49ers will have the
- 23:21Speaker 6: one seed, and the Los Angeles Rams will head on
- 23:25Speaker 6: the road to take on the quarterback whisperer himself, the
- 23:28Speaker 6: Minnesota Vikings.
- 23:29Speaker 4: Wow.
- 23:30Speaker 1: He's not a quarterback whisperer.
- 23:32Speaker 4: Sure is.
- 23:33Speaker 3: 4-0, two seed.
- 23:36Speaker 1: The only thing he should be whispering in anyone's ear
- 23:39Speaker 1: is a big thank you to Brian Flores. If he
- 23:41Speaker 1: did that, Flores would end it. That, too.
- 23:44Speaker 4: Yes, that, too.
- 23:45Speaker 1: I would take Stafford and the Rams to steamroll the quarterback.
- 23:49Speaker 3: As would I.
- 23:51Speaker 6: Your next matchup, the Seattle Seahawks, the defending champs had
- 23:54Speaker 6: on the road to take on the Jameis Winston led
- 23:58Speaker 6: NFC East New York giant champions.
- 24:01Speaker 4: Wow. Wow. Wow. Wow.
- 24:03Speaker 1: Horvath makes the playoffs. Does it with a backup quarterback?
- 24:06Speaker 1: Baltimore's traveling to Cleveland. I'm rooting for Jameis. Um, I'll
- 24:15Speaker 1: take Jameis in that game. I will, just simply because
- 24:17Speaker 1: I'm rooting for Jameis and I want Jameis to win
- 24:19Speaker 1: a Super Bowl.
- 24:22Speaker 6: And your guaranteed Sunday night matchup for playoff weekend?
- 24:25Speaker 4: Yes.
- 24:26Speaker 3: The Chicago Bears on the road at the Carolina Panthers. Fireworks, baby.
- 24:31Speaker 3: Week one matchup.
- 24:32Speaker 1: Well, we've seen that game. Yes, I think they put
- 24:34Speaker 1: up a 50 spot. And Carolina put up 30-something. That
- 24:41Speaker 1: would be an exciting game. Caleb Williams should be back.
- 24:44Speaker 1: I would take the Bears because he's the greatest quarterback
- 24:45Speaker 1: I've ever seen.
- 24:48Speaker 3: Bryce Young, too. And by the way, your number one
- 24:50Speaker 3: pick if the season ended today?
- 24:51Speaker 4: Yes.
- 24:52Speaker 3: Houston Texans are on the clock.
- 24:54Speaker 1: Wow. With a championship defense that suddenly got a lot worse.
